JAIL FOR HILLSBOROUGH DELIVERY DRIVER ROBBER A SHEFFIELD man is starting a five year jail sentence for his part in a violent robbery, which targeted a takeaway delivery driver in the city earlier this year.
Winding down his window to speak to them, the trio claimed they had ordered the takeaway, and the driver got out of the vehicle to get the food from the boot.
Ian Kleute, 19, formerly of Merton Lane, Sheffield, pleaded guilty to robbery and a second charge of attempted robbery in October.
Investigating officer DC Ryan Griffiths said: “At this point, the driver was threatened by the three men and punched in the face multiple times, causing serious facial injuries. They demanded the car keys and continued to attack their victim. As the driver fell to the floor, the men went through his pockets taking his wallet and phone.
On November 29, he was sentenced to five years in prison at Sheffield Crown Court, of which three years were robbery, one year for attempted robbery and one year for triggering his suspended sentence. On September 9, a delivery driver was making a stop off on Langsett Road in the Hillsborough area of the city when he was flagged down by three men, one of which being Kleute.
“Whilst being subjected to this brutal attack, he managed to tell them that the keys were in the car and the three men took his vehicle. Our officers found the car a short time later, after seeing it being driven erratically and then abandoned.
“Just days later, Kleute was involved in a second incident, where a man was attacked on Langsett Road, again by three men. The victim in this case managed to break free from the group. Kleute was later identified on CCTV captured that night and arrested soon afterwards, footage on his own phone also linked him to the incident. “In both cases, the victims were innocently going about their daily lives, one was a takeaway delivery driver earning a living and the other was a young man walking home from the pub. They were both brutally attacked by Kleute and I am pleased that he has been sentenced accordingly. “In Sheffield we are working hard to bring people like Kleute to justice, and I hope the result today demonstrates that to the public.”

MORE SUCCESS FOR LEISURE CENTRE STOCKSBRIDGE Community Leisure Centre held their Christmas Fayre on November 24 and it was their biggest and best yet.
Held from 11am to 4pm with free entry, the crowds gathered to support a vital local resource which has gone from strength to strength since being taken under community ownership. The centre was closed by Sheffield City Council in 2013 and rescued by the local community, re-opening its doors in January 2014. It’s been a good few weeks for the centre – they secured £831,464 of grant funding towards a major refurbishment project and just last week Toby Foster presented his popular BBC Radio Sheffield breakfast show live from there. Grants awarded by the Lottery Community Fund, Sport England, Well North and the East Peak Innovation Partnership will enable an
extensive refurbishment programme, with an emphasis on improving disabled access to all parts of the centre, to go ahead. The six-month high value building project includes significant alterations to the main entrance and front of house.
These include a new fully accessible front entrance, a disabledfriendly reception area, a new meeting and conference room, offices and a brand new café with spectacular views over the Upper Don valley. A primary aspect of the refurbishment is to provide wheelchair access to both the swimming pools and sports areas, something that was lacking in the 1960s-built building. But the centre still relies on support from the community to keep the doors open and the Christmas Fayre comes as a huge boost for the staff who organise a variety of events throughout the year.

FREEMAN WITH THE PRAM HE’S known across the city as the ‘Man with the Pram’ and now John Burkhill is the ‘freeman with the pram’. On November 26, Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Tony Downing awarded Sheffield’s famous wig wearing fundraiser, John, with the city’s highest honour, the Freedom of the City. The ceremony took place in the Sheffield Town Hall where John was greeted by the Lord Mayor and other city officials, plus his family and friends. Following a speech from the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, John stepped forward to signify his acceptance by signing the Roll of Honorary Freeman of the City of Sheffield. Councillor Tony Downing, Lord Mayor of Sheffield, said: “The word ‘Freeman’ is an ancient one, historically carrying with it a great many rights and privileges. It cannot be inherited nor can it be bought, but it is a gift to those few eminent people who have worked for this city beyond the limits of ordinary service and I cannot think of a more deserving individual than John. “His efforts and contribution to fundraising are known by all in Sheffield. He is a fine example of what we can all strive to be, hardworking, determined, kind and selfless. “It was my absolute honour to award John the Freedom of the City and I wish him every success in reaching his
next goal to raise the magic million. On behalf of the whole city, thank you and many congratulations John, we are all behind you.” John, 80, has raised £750,000 for Macmillan over the past 30 years and has vowed to raise more than a million. He joins only a handful of people to have been given the honour, including Nelson Mandela, Harry Brearley, Sir Winston Churchill; and athletes such as Lord Coe, Michael Vaughan, and most recently Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill. John is famous for tirelessly walking the streets of Sheffield for a great cause, and is a regular feature at the city’s half marathons, 10ks and other events. This Sunday he will take part in one of Sheffield’s most popular organised races, The Percy Pud, where he’ll get 10km closer to his £1million target. For more than 30 years he has put his heart and soul into raising money for Macmillan. He has taken part in more than 1,000 organised races with his distinctive green wig and pram, braving the hills of Sheffield and beyond in all kinds of weather. This has not gone unnoticed, John has received many accolades over the years. He was an Olympic Torch Bearer in 2012 and won the Pride of Yorkshire Award in 2012, and also again this year. He was awarded the British Empire Medal in 2013 for his services to char-
ity, and the Douglas Macmillan Award for his services to Macmillan Cancer Support. He started the 1st Yorkshire Half Marathon in 2015, was the Contribution to Charity winner in The Churchill Awards in 2017 – and if that’s not enough he’s even had lunch with the Queen. The Freedom of the City is an honour bestowed by the council upon a valued member of the community, or upon a visiting celebrity or dignitary. Although the title of “freeman” confers no special privileges, those names included on the Freeman’s Roll have a permanent and well-deserved place in the history of the city. It will allow John the freedom to roam through the city and is a very public recognition of John’s years of charity fundraising. John said: “What an incredible honour last night was. I was awarded freedom of the city, my city, Sheffield. I am so proud to be a Sheffield lad, so as you can imagine this meant the world to me. “Thank you everyone involved, thank you everyone who came and finally thank you to everyone who always supports me, day in, day out, and supports Macmillan Cancer Support.” If, by some miracle, you haven’t seen John pounding the pavements with his pram, you can donate to his cause here https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/madwalker

Chapeltown charity magazine scoops gold award A MAGAZINE produced by Chapeltown charity the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA UK) has won a prestigious communications award - for the second time. ‘Emphasis’ won gold in the ‘best publication’ category in the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) PRide Awards for Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, held in Leeds last week. The win comes two years after it first took gold in the same category. The PHA UK, which has its head office in Chapeltown and works nationally, publishes the 52-page magazine four times a year. Containing news, features and advice columns, the publication aims to help the charity’s 4,500 members live well with pulmonary hypertension (PH); a rare and serious lung disease which also affects the heart. Judges praised Emphasis for ‘the respect and creativity that goes into each issue’, hailing the magazine
‘a highly polished product, which informs, engages and inspires its target audiences’. Stocksbridge-based Iain Armstrong, chair of the PHA UK, said: “We know how much our members value Emphasis as a source of support and information and it feels extra special to receive industry recognition like this, especially for the second time.” Emphasis is edited by Sheffield-based communications agency Capital B Media and designed by CreativeSmith. Printed copies are mailed free to PHA UK members and it can also be read online at www.phauk.org.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) causes high pressure in the blood vessels connecting the heart and lungs. Affecting just 7000 people in the UK, the disease can put increasing strain on the heart and lead to irreversible damage and heart failure. Symptoms include severe breathlessness, fatigue, blackouts and swell-

Pennine Law Solicitors Present
PLAN FOR THE FUTURE THIS CHRISTMAS
St Andrew’s Church | Penistone
12th December 2019 12:30 - 2:30pm
SERGEANT Kieran Frain of Sheffield Central and North West Neighbourhood Team and Deepcar Policing Team writes his first of what will hopefully be regular columns for Look Local. On the Deepcar Team’s re-introduction in February 2019, I was invited to and was warmly welcomed at the Stocksbridge Community Forum, who hold their meetings at The Venue on the last Wednesday of every second month. A great group of community spirited people who, like me, want to do all they can to maintain the local area as a great place to live, work and visit. I do my best to make as many of these meetings as I can, because it’s a platform where I can let people know how their team have been working to make their community safer. More importantly though, it is a platform whereby I can listen to the concerns of local people and use that to shape the things that my team will focus their time and attention on. There are many elements to successful “Neighbourhood Policing”, but the key is about how well the police know and understand their community. This knowledge is gained through being present in the community, and through what we “in the job” term “engagement” – which in its simplest form is actually about listening and informing – indeed the existence of my team is the direct result of the police command team listening to the local community. The Police, like society in general, have moved towards the digital media to listen and inform. This is important, because news can be released without delay, and has the ability to reach a great number of people.
Karen Dennis | Age UK Barnsley Community Groups & Volunteering
I am however, grateful to the honest feedback of one resident at a recent Stocksbridge Community Forum, who (whilst I was busy encouraging everyone to follow our social media accounts) politely reminded me that not everyone in our community has access to, or an interest in, digital media.
Frazer Foster | Pennine Law Wills, Trusts & Care Fee Planning
And so, I would like to thank the editor of Look Local, for offering the neighbourhood policing team this opportunity to communicate with you directly, in traditional print media.
With talks from:
Alison Beardsell | Heritage Wealth Solutions Financial Planning & Pension Freedoms C a l l 01226 763 551 o r v i s i t www.penninelaw.co.uk
As the editor is already very good about informing you about what the Police have been doing, it is my intention to use this column to let you know about measures that we can all take to prevent crime, thereby enabling us to protect ourselves and to look out for the most vulnerable in our community. I am, however, keen to hear your thoughts, and invite you to write to the Look Local about what elements of policing you want to know more about; think would be useful; or would simply find interesting. Next column – burglary and prevention.

I am an expert in helping people arrange their Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Pre-paid Funeral Plans. Along with my colleague Haworth Ward-Drummond we specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional advice, but with a personal touch. We offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:
• Making a basic Will • Setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney • Protecting your home for future generations • Pre-paid Funeral Plans We know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. We can visit you at a convenient time in the privacy and comfort of your own home to discuss your unique circumstances.
Contact us on: enquiries@looklocal.org.uk
A visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all our professional services and work are fully insured and we are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all our clients are assured of the
highest standards of conduct at all times. All our clients (and their families) that we have helped in the past have been very happy with our services and tell us they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

Christmas bargains
I’ve just returned home with a bag full of bargains, There is a serious traffic implication with the most of them brand new and all from our local proposed access road that would join Wood Royd charity shops. It really is worth a visit to them. Road on the brow of the hill where the road already narrows significantly. Barbara Horsman This is another inappropriate application in an inappropriate location.

Your Letters
Dear Editor, This year’s Poppy Appeal has raised £12,310. Thanks to everybody who helped collect this amount. Thanks to Co-Op, Aldi and Lidl supermarkets for allowing us to collect in the stores. Thanks to all who helped counting the monies and to Alison and the staff at The Post Office for their help with banking the money.
I want Britain to set its own laws and to be free from EU diktat. But the Tories’ deal is the worst of all worlds and would lead to American private providers buying up our NHS. I voted for better public services, not them being sold off to foreign companies. Boris Johnson is lying when he says the current deal is “oven ready. His Brexit deal wouldn’t see Brexit done at all, but prolonged for years! I think it’s safe to say none of us want that.

I felt that I should write this letter to publically thank all the councillors and staff at Ecclesfield Parish Council for all their help and support to enable Chapelgreen Advice Centre to continue helping the people of not only the parish but surrounding areas as well.
Since the EU wants access to our markets this closer alignment – which protects jobs and industry, but sets us free from the EU courts and bureaucrats should be simple to sort out. Much simpler than Boris Johnson’s plan to make new trade deals with everyone around the world, and we already know he is happy to leave our NHS on the table in trade negotiations.
The application to build 42 houses on green fields at Wood Royd is yet another assault on the green open spaces in the Deepcar area. The same applicant wants to build up to 93 houses at Hollin Busk. Dear Editor,
I want to see a Brexit that lets us set our own laws, Your truly, Tim Curson TRBL Poppy Appeal Organiser but also which protects jobs and public services. Despite my misgivings about Jeremy Corbyn I genuinely believe Labour is on the right track demanding a different deal.
A story from Stocksbridge Given the current combination of electioneering and incessant rainfall, I therefore thought the following topical article I’ve just come across may prove to be of interest to you and your readers. Namely ‘A Story from Stocksbridge’, which appears in the October 6th, 1900 edition of The Weekly Telegraph on page three; which reads: “A certain Member of Parliament was to make a speech in Stocksbridge, but was unable to do so because the heavy rains had destroyed a portion of the little railroad. Accordingly he sent this telegram: ‘Cannot come, wash out on the line.’ In a few hours the reply came: - “Never mind. Come anyway. CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL
FOLLOWING the success of last year, Grenoside is once again hosting its annual Christmas Tree Festival in St. Mark’s Church, Main Street, Grenoside, over the weekend of December 7 and 8. All local groups, organisations and businesses are being asked to decorate a tree to take part in the festive competition.
Whilst there is an element of competition, the main idea is to showcase local organisations and to raise awareness of what they do; and to get in the Christmas spirit. The event is free to enter, just provide and decorate a real or artificial Christmas Tree, a branch or something similar.
The tree can be decorated to represent organisations, businesses or in any way you like. The festival is open to the public on Saturday from 12pm to 5pm and on Sunday from 12pm to 4pm, followed by a candle lit carol service led by the Grenoside Singers.
Throughout the two-day festival, St Mark’s Church will provide seasonal refreshments. Speaking about the event organiser Chris Levesley said: “Last year’s event was so successful and brought such Christmas joy to the village we wanted to do it again.
by decorating a tree. Last year, we had some amazing entries, so we cannot wait to see what people do this year. All proceeds from the event will go to local charities. To enter please fill in this form: http://tiny.cc/ grenotreefest

TREE ANGEL BOLSTERSTONE Christmas Tree Nursery are a great option if you’re looking for that special addition to your living room or business this Christmas.
These magnificent trees have been tenderly grown for over 15 years. Every conceivable variety of Christmas tree is allowed to flourish in this perfect environment. You can cut the tree down yourself so that absolute freshness is guaranteed to perfume your home with fantastic aromas.
It all started as a way of marking the birth of owner John Johnson’s first grandchild, Lucas. He now has four grandchildren and planted 50 trees for each of them but he hasn’t stopped there – he has around 2,000 trees now. Bolstertone Christmas Tree Nursey has been featured on the BBC and they organise a ‘bear hunt’ with the proceeds going to charity. Last year, £230 was donated to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.
By buying the trees locally, you are helping with conservation and keeping your carbon footprint down at the same time. They currently have a special offer – any size tree is just £25. There’s a competition for anyone buying an outside tree from Bolstertone Christmas Tree Nursey with a £25 prize for best decorated Christmas tree – send your pictures to John at gloops.sheffield@gmail. com
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas

PARK STEELS TURN TO MANCHESTER UNITED PROSPECT
FOLLOWING on from their third postponement of the week, Stocksbridge Park Steels return to league action on Saturday against Newcastle Town at the Look Local Stadium, hoping to carry on their strong start to the season. Thankfully, the missed games have not affected Steels’ position in the league and they sit only five points off the top.
One disappointment for Steels is the injury setback suffered by keeper Ed Hall who has been in superb form this season. The club hope to see him back in action soon. But the management team have done well to secure the loan of Manchester United keeper Jacob Carney. Jacob is no stranger to the Steels having spent the start of the season at Bracken
Moor, putting in some excellent performances as part of his development. Jacob is still eligible to play in the under-18 team for Manchester United and the academy staff are pleased for him to experience adult football at a good standard to help in his advancement through the age groups at Old Trafford. Kick off on Saturday is at 3pm .

Stocksbridge turn near rivals over

Stocksbridge 16 -14 Mosborough STOCKSBRIDGE Rugby consolidated their position in the league table at the weekend with a nail biting two-point win over promotion rivals Mosborough, with a scoreline of 16-14. They were made to work hard for the points as the inform visitors could and maybe should have claimed a victory at fortress Coal Pit Lane. You have to go back to September 28 to recall the last Stocksbridge defeat and this win left head coach Rhys Keenan purring after overseeing a resolute and committed defensive performance.
This win opens up a 10-point gap between the Piggies and fourth place, and they are now only one win away from securing second place in the table, leapfrogging Mosborough in the process. The match was in some doubt beforehand as a still mist engulfed the field, making viewing difficult on a chilly autumnal day. Missing Aspin, Westby and Tom Spencer with injury, young back rower Jack Martin again held his position in Keenan’s starting line up and responded with a Trojan individual performance.
The Stockbridge pack, with Joe Smith recalled to the front row, were on the front foot from the start, shunting the visitors off their ball in the scrum and making inroads in the loose with second rowers Beal and Whitaker in tandem, supporting the willing skipper Rowett making good ground. It was a very dominant display from the whole team during the first half with Bowskill slotting two simple penalties over as the Mosborough pack struggled to cope with the pressure exerted from the rampant home eight. Disaster struck as from nowhere and
completely against the run of play, a stray pass from fly half Jack Spencer was intercepted by the quick Mosborough winger and he won the footrace to the line to bring them back into the game. A sniping break by Frith, led to an overlap and veteran flyer Joe Jones scorched in at the corner just too far out for Bowskill to convert. Mosborough were relieved to hear the half time whistle trailing by only 11-7. The visitors gradually clawed their way back into the contest in the second stanza and only some resilient defence kept them at bay with Frith, Fletcher and
Ryan Smith making Pipeworks, for an all some devastating round classy display. hits. It took Coduri just 12 minutes to open the scoring for the visitors and Ryan Johnson made it 2-0 just seven minutes later. Knaresborough managed to get a foothold in the game with Andy Cooper scoring in the 57th minute but any chance of a comeback was quickly thwarted with Coduri grabbing his second just after the hour mark. After the game, Church manager Ian Richards said: “We’re very fortunate to

A FROSTY winter morning descended upon the Loxley Valley with 2,815 runners completing the 27th running of the Percy Pud 10km on Sunday. Both male and female course records were broken and the organising club, Steel City Strider, handed over two £1,000 cheques. Omar Ahmed of Birchfield Harriers won the race in a stunning 29:00 (28:59.2 to be precise). This makes it the seventh fastest road 10km in the country this year and breaking the previous course record of 29:13. In the ladies race, Rio 2016 Olympic and Qatar 2019 World Championship finalist Eilish McColgan of Dundee Hawkhill Harriers broke her own course record of 32:23 by winning in 31:48. This was a career 10km personal best for Eilish and the second fastest road 10km in the country this year. When you consider how ‘undulating’ the course is, these are both phenomenal race times posted. A spokesperson for the club said: “Firstly, many thanks to everyone that ran today to make it another successful Percy Pud race. “Big kudos to all the volunteers and marshals who gave up their time to help, it is very much appreciated by everyone at the club. The race couldn’t be what it is without you. “It was also really pleasing to see the sharp end of both female and male leaderboards littered with runners from local clubs too showing that running in the area is stacked with quality. We even went up to V75+ prizes this year to reward runners of all ages.”
