CHARITY FOOTBALL MATCH GETS KITTED UP WHAT started as a memorial football match has turned into an annual event with numerous other fundraising events spread throughout the year. For two years running now, The Collins Cup has taken place in August at Stocksbridge Park Steels’ Look Local Stadium. And it’s been announced that it will once again be taking place in 2020, with a date of August 9. Organiser Lee Shepherd has organised the match in a bid to help raise awareness of male suicide and raise funds for the charities that support those suffering from suicidal thoughts. The match is in memory of Garin Collins, a friend of the event’s organiser, Lee Shepherd. Lee Shepherd, Richard Beever and mascot Evie Shepherd

Garin, originally from Edinburgh, was living in Australia but sadly took his

own life in February 2018. He was a keen footballer, so the match is a fitting tribute. All proceeds from the day will go to Sheffield-based charity SToRMS (Strategies to Reduce Male Suicide). The football match now has custom-made shirts, sponsored by local gym Vision Fit. Lee said: “I just want to give a massive thank you to Dave at DB sports and Joe from Print-room for the great service throughout the whole period since we decided to get some kits done, they made everything seem effortless and provided us with top quality football kits. “A massive thank you to our sponsors Richard Beever of Vision Fit and Anthea Bebb of Building Energy Control for their generosity and support without which we would not be in

a position to promote our event in such a way!” As well as the football match itself, more events are taking place to help the cause. Lee added: “A quiz night will take place on Saturday February 29 at The Venue from 7.30pm. There will a raffle along with live music from local talent Emily Worton, who is not to be missed! Tickets are £5 per person and will be available directly from myself. “The aim of the quiz night is to raise funds for a family fun day on August 9 at Bracken Moor sports club, funds will be used to facilitate staging and gazebo/ marquee hire. “Alternatively organisers are looking to secure sponsorship for the event from local businesses in exchange for a great advertising opportunity.

HELPING YOU FIND HOME.

“The whole idea is to break the stigma and encourage people to open up. Talk to someone - the single biggest cause of death in males under 45 in the UK is suicide. On average 12 men take their own life a week.” As well as the football match on August 9, there will also be a strongman competition - anyone interested can get in touch. A reptile corner, bouncy castles, face painting, raffles, auction, live music, hot food, cake sales and stalls will also feature. The guys at Vision are going to be doing a 24-hour fitness challenge at some point this year to raise money for the event. To get in touch with Lee for tickets or to speak about sponsorship, call 07923574946 or email lee. shepherd85@outlook.com

SPEED CHECKS CONDUCTED AT THE WHEEL ECCLESFIELD AFTER COMPLAINTS FROM RESIDENTS

Man who brandished weapons moved from Penistone PENISTONE Police Officers received reports from members of the public of an ongoing disturbance on Shrewsbury Road, Penistone, on April 2 of last year where a male had reportedly brandished several weapons against local youths from the area. Penistone Officers conducted an investigation along with CCTV checks in the area which identified a male who was subsequently arrested and charged with several offences. At Barnsley Magistrates Court on January 8, the male received the following: To comply with a Community Order until July 28 2021 along with a Rehabilitation Activity Requirement. 160 hours under the Unpaid Work Requirement Scheme. £40 Court Costs, £10 Victim Costs and a Forfeiture and Destruction Order for Weapons and/or drugs. The male has since this incident been moved out of the Penistone area.

Street names needed

SOUTH Yorkshire Police’s Parson Cross Team have been enforcing the speed limit on The Wheel following feedback from residents at the recent Community Open Forum. Community officers have been using a speed gun in the area checking motorists are keeping within the 30mph legal limit. Fortunately the majority

of motorists were clocked travelling at appropriate speeds.

speeding puts lives in danger and is not acceptable.

A member of the team said: “We appreciate that tackling speeding in such locations long term can only be achieved using a joint approach with partners and the community.

“We will be in another part of the area over the coming days so please watch that speed.”

“We all have a role to play in this and we must send a clear message to our friends, family and colleagues that

THE builders of a new housing development are looking for ideas for street names and are asking for help from the public. Barratt/David Wilson Homes are the builders for the development on the site of the former Oughtibridge Paper Mill. Did a member of your family work at Oughtibridge Paper Mill and also serve during

either World War I or II? If so, the builders would like to hear from you. There are plans to give streets in the development at Oughtibridge Valley names with local connections. SCHOOL CELEBRATES POSITIVE OFSTED REPORT ROYD Nursery Infant School have received yet another successful Ofsted report. Miss Jones, Headteacher, commented: “I am extremely proud of all the people associated with Royd Nursery Infant Schools achievements. “Her Majesty’s Inspector (HMI) highlighted that we are an ‘inclusive school which nurtures all pupils’. This comment continually comes up whenever we have people visit our school. “We put the pupils at the heart of everything that we do and are huge believers that if our pupils are happy then they will always excel with the

high quality learning that they receive at Royd.”

is high and that pupils speak with enthusiasm about how they learn.”

Mr Sly, deputy headteacher, added: “The HMI completed a range of activities throughout the two day inspection including lesson observations, looking at books and conversations were held with pupils and staff.

Miss Jones further commented: “The children are real ambassadors for our school and they did you proud on the day, as they do every day. Our staff work so hard and I am delighted that the report reflects their efforts. I would also like to say a huge thank you to the parents and carers who continually support us as a school and to the governors who provide challenge in order to help drive the school forward.”

“The quality of the learning throughout the two days was extremely high as was the work displayed in pupil’s books throughout the academic year.” The HMI reported that, “Teachers have high expectations for what every pupil can achieve, the quality of work

Choirs raise over £400 for children’s charity PENISTONE Ladies Choir’s annual charity Christmas concert in St John’s Church, Penistone, was held this year in conjunction with Millhouse Green Male Voice Choir. The choirs sang to a full church, raising over £400 for their chosen charity, the Yorkshire Children’s Trust. A cheque for £455 was presented to the founder of the charity, Simon Widdop, at Peni-

stone Ladies Annual General Meeting on February 3. Margaret Christian, chair of Penistone Ladies Choir, said: “We always like to support a children’s charity with proceeds from our Christmas concert and are particularly delighted this year to be supporting a small local charity, where we know we will be helping local children.” Jane Hobson (music director), Margaret Christian (chair), Simon Widdop (founder of Yorkshire Children’s Trust) and Melvyn Dyson (president of the choir)

Mud Madness returns for 2020 register your place ONCE again, Mud Madness returns to Hesley Wood Scout Activity Centre! Run, jump and wade through our course while supporting Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, South Yorkshires only children’s hospice. Register now for what promises to be the muddiest edition of Mud Madness yet. With obstacles such as lakes, ditches and slides you are guaranteed to get muddy! This event is open to all ages with a Family Mud Madness 3km race for anyone over the age of 11 and a Mud Madness 6km for participants over 17 years old. Once again, the event will be supporting Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, South Yorkshires only children’s hospice. Bluebell Wood cares for children and young adults with life-shortening and lifethreatening conditions.

They currently support over 300 families, both in family homes and in their North Anston hospice. It costs £4.8m to keep their doors open for families across South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire, North Nottinghamshire and parts of North Lincolnshire, which is £13,325 each day. Only around 9% of funding comes from Government sources.

As ever businesses are invited to take part in the event through its sponsor an obstacle initiative. For £250 you can sponsor one of the many obstacles along the course. Included in the £250 sponsorship is two free race entrances, naming rights to the obstacle, photography throughout the day and coverage in the local media both print, and television based.

Beth Cole, Events Fundraiser at Bluebell Wood, said: “Taking on Mud Madness is a fantastic way to help us support local families when they need us the most. There are courses to suit all abilities, so this is the perfect opportunity to create some wonderful memories while making a real difference to local families at the same time. We’d like to thank the organisers MLS for choosing Bluebell Wood as their charity partner once again for what promises to be another brilliant, funfilled event.”

Organisers anticipate around 350 spectators to the event (1 to 1 ratio) and would encourage more to add to the vibrancy of the event. The likelihood is that children entering the event will attract the entire family and so having a presence at this event could increase your companies outreach greatly. It costs £30 to enter for over 17s and £20 for ages 11 to 16. For more information or to book your place on the event visit www.mudmadness. co.uk

Beat the winter blues by giving yourself a sporting chance SPORTING Chance Sheffield run a range of men’s activity and engagement sessions across north Sheffield. They are friendly and informal and a great way to make new friends, get fitter and get out of the house. Social isolation and loneliness can have a massive impact on our mental and physical wellbeing and this can be increased over the dark winter months. Mark Hible of Sporting Chance told Look Local: “I would strongly recommend that men come along and give our sessions a go.

STOCKSBRIDGE TRAIN HOPES BOOSTED BY ANNOUNCEMENT THE Department of Transport has committed £500m of national funding to kickstart the reopening of rail routes closed decades ago and it is hoped that Stocksbridge might be one of the routes to be reopened. In December, Rail Minister Chris Heaton Harris MP visited Stocksbridge and announced that the Stocksbridge to Sheffield line is one of the routes that the Government would like to see re-opened. The Transport Secretary has invited MPs, local authorities and community groups across England to come forward with proposals on how they could use funding to reinstate axed local services. £300,000 has been committed to an ‘Ideas Fund’ to kickstart the process to encourage innovative ideas that will then be considered for further funding in the future. The £500million fund will help develop these proposals, and accelerate the delivery of schemes that are already being considered for restoration, making possible the

rapid reopening of certain stations and lines. MP for Stocksbridge and Penistone, Miriam Cates, commented: “This offers us a real opportunity to improve transport connections for our community. “Last week I met with representatives from Sheffield City Region and the Don Valley Railway to look at possible sites for a passenger train station in Stocksbridge. At the moment, a freight train travels from Stocksbridge to Sheffield twice a day along what used to be a passenger line. “The Don Valley Railway group have been campaigning for over ten years to see this line re-instated as a passenger service and I am delighted that the Government is committed to funding projects like these. “The A6102 between Stocksbridge and Sheffield is a busy road, and frequent users will know that traffic congestion and air quality in Hillsborough are significant issues for those coming into the North of Sheffield.

“With more housing being built and planned for the Upper Don Valley, congestion will only increase. If we are going to connect our communities with jobs, training and services, and reduce our use of fossil fuels, we have to find viable alternatives to private cars. This a fantastic opportunity to do just that and I’m looking forward to working with the Department for Transport and Sheffield City Region to deliver it.” Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said: “Many communities still live with the scars that came from the closure of their local railway more than five decades ago. Today sees work begin to undo the damage of the Beeching cuts by restoring local railways and stations to their former glory. “Investing in transport links is essential to levelling up access to opportunities across the country, ensuring our regions are better connected, local economies flourish and more than half a century of isolation is undone.”

“We have had many men who were feeling lonely, suffering with depression or from poor health join in our sessions and continue to stay and thrive. It can be difficult making that first step to join a new group, but we always give people a warm welcome and a cuppa!” Although the groups are aimed at men only aged 50 and over, they also welcome companions or carers on initial visits to the sessions to help people settle in. Most sessions run for two hours and include free refreshments. Taster sessions are free, then there is a minimal charge ongoing.

The nearest one for Look Local readers is on Mondays from 1.30pm to 3.30pm at Stocksbridge Leisure Centre, featuring badminton, table tennis, cards, dominoes and a quiz. Participants have a choice of doing all or some activities, depending on their ability and preferences. The group also runs day trips, competitions, events and occasional meals out. Ambitious directors launch new Specsavers at Fox Valley after ÂŁ350k investment

OPTICAL and audiology services in north Sheffield received an extra boost after the launch of a state-ofthe-art Specsavers store on Monday February 3 at the award-winning Fox Valley development.

The 1,500 sq. ft. store, situated on a former 28-acre steelworks site in Stocksbridge, has benefitted from a £350k investment and has created more than 10 new jobs in the local area. The new team, who bring a combined 25 years of optical experience between them, will be headed by the store’s directors Humma Khalid and Hitesh Patel. As well as experience, they hope to help the town’s residents with all their sight and hearing issues by investing in new technology, including an OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) machine. Humma, Ophthalmic Director, started her career at Specsavers in 2012 as a newly qualified optometrist and has contributed to the success of the stores as well as representing Specsavers by delivering a successful teaching assignment in Zambia with Vision Aid Overseas. Her passion

lies in optics; both in the humanitarian sense and as an aspiring businesswoman. Humma said: “I feel so lucky to be director of a brand new Specsavers store. I am incredibly passionate about optics and audiology. I am excited to help build the careers of our new starters. “Specsavers offers lots of career progression, and it is amazing to help members of staff develop and grow. Also leading the store is Retail Director, Hitesh Patel. Hitesh’s optical career journey started in 2006 and he has a wealth of Specsavers experience working his way up into management before joining Fox Valley as retail director. Hitesh said: “I can’t wait to work with the new team to create a professional and friendly environment for staff to flourish and customers to enjoy. As well as eye tests and hearing checks, the new store will provide a wide range of optical and audiology services, equipped with three test rooms as well as a soundproofed audiology booth.

The store boasts a ÂŁ40k OCT machine. Usually found in hospitals, the technology allows optometrists to look deeper into the eyes than every before and can help detect treatable eye conditions sooner. Specsavers joins a host of retailers at Fox Valley including Boots, Next, Sports Direct and Sandersons Boutique Department Store. The ÂŁ50m centre opened in June 2016 and has won a number of high-profile industry awards including the RICS Pro-Yorkshire Award for Regeneration. Fox Valley is owned and managed by the retail property specialist Dransfield Properties. Estates Director Dransfield Properties, James Shepherd said: “We are delighted to welcome Specsavers to Fox Valley. The new store looks great and we’d like to wish Humma, Ritesh and the whole team all the very best in their new venture.â€? The Programme encourages young people aged 13 to 18 to interpret one of 10 plays written especially for the National Theatre by playwrights from around the country. Steel Valley Beacon Arts are one of just 200 high schools and youth companies that have been selected to perform and hope to be asked to perform in London in the summer. The Marxist in Heaven is an hour long play that does exactly what its title says it’s going to do. Our protagonist ‘wakes up’ in paradise and once they get over the

shock of this fundamental contradiction of everything they believe in - they get straight back to work and continue their lifelong struggle for equality and fairness for all‌.even in death. Funny, playful, provocative, pertinent and jam-packed with discourse, disputes, deities and disco dancing by the bucketful, this upbeat buoyant story shines its holy light on globalization and asks the questions – who are we and what are we doing to ourselves? And what conditioner do you use on your hair? SVBA home performances are at Christ Church in Stocksbridge at 7.15pm on Friday Febraury 28 and Saturday February 29. Tickets cost £5 for adults and £3 for under 18s and are available from cast members or Stocksbridge Keys.

As Hattie Naylor is a Lecturer of Stage and Screen at Sheffield Hallam University, the group will also be performing at the SHU Performance Lab at 7.15pm on Saturday March 7. Tickets are again ÂŁ5 for adults and free for under 18s and Sheffield Hallam Students. Finally, the group will be at the Studio Theatre at the Crucible at 7.15pm on Tuesday March 31. Tickets have sold out twice for this popular performance. However, more tickets have just been released and are available from Sheffield Theatres on 0114 249 6000 or their website. Please come and support our young people on their journey to be selected by the National Theatre to perform in London in the summer.

Finally! A great opportunity has arisen to create a large project in High Green that will bring all age groups and abilities together within the Ecclesfield Parish area. The land beside Thorncliffe Leisure Centre and St George’s Park has been secured on a long lease by TCS (Thorncliffe Community Sports) - a registered charity. This parcel of land stretches from Mortomley Close old tennis courts to the old Pickwicks boundary. The tennis courts, bowling greens and multi-use games area are included. A number of us have been working together to develop the area for the benefit of our community. I have been working on plans to develop part of the unused land. We want to include 24 raised bed allotments that are fully disabled compliant as well as a Men’s Shed Project. Men’s Shed’s are growing worldwide. They started in Australia giving men of all ages a place to go to engage with others. Some make things, some play sports. It is whatever the members want it to be. The sort of thing we were thinking is members who have an interest in gardening or horticulture might want to work with schools and disabled people on the allotments.

Submissions need to be made to Roundabout by March 15, after which the charity will select its artists and put them in touch with Bangers and Cash teams, with the artists being paid a commission on completion of the finished artwork. Design applications should be made via email to Laura Kennedy at artists@bangersandcash.co.uk or by post to Laura Kennedy, Bangers and Cash Arts Co-ordinator, Roundabout Ltd, The Circle, 33 Rockingham Lane, Sheffield, S1 4FW. Respect for our countryside To whom it concerns, To the person or persons who consume large amounts of alcohol and neatly ties it in a plastic bag and then proceeds to throw it in Pot House Woods, alongside more bottles and rubbish – can you at least leave it at the edge so that I can litter pick and discard in the correct manner. Many thanks, A local person who respects the environment.

Bolsterstone Christmas Tree Nursery

We need members of our communities to help us drive this fantastic opportunity forward. We need people willing to get their hands dirty and also people to join the TCS committee in helping with administration. This is a plea to men and women of all ages who have time on their hands or want to get on board and grow something special in our community. Any help will be warmly welcomed. I am working on arranging a public meeting in the very near future for anybody interested or even just curious about these projects. In due course I will let you know the meeting place, date and time. Kind Regards, Gary Lakin

Creating a secret oasis of calm in your garden that provides a bit of privacy and a peaceful place to sit and relax or catch up with friends and family doesn’t have to be complicated or costly. By taking some simple garden planning ideas and adapting them to your own outside living space you can achieve your perfect hideaway without resorting to planting a huge conifer hedge. If your existing fencing is unsightly give it a makeover by painting it or covering it in climbing plants. Climbers will add softness and greenery to a fence, encourage wildlife and provide fragrance.

And, if you choose wisely, they can also be evergreen that gives a bit of structure to the garden in winter. Jasmine is a classic scented climber, whilst something like Clematis armandii is semi-evergreen. A covered seating area not only adds a bit of height, it allows you to have a secluded hideaway in which to enjoy your garden well into the late summer evenings.

A corner of the garden can be a good place to build a structure with a solid roof – or an open roof decked in climbers. Clematis montana will cover a pergola in no time, or for repeat-flowering go for scented roses.

Evergreen screening is very effective at blocking out unsightly views whilst at the same time providing a sense of seclusion. For the smaller gardens have a row of single trees or trained trees, whose branches become dense over time such as the evergreen Magnolia grandiflora or Acer platanoides for training. Alternatively you could plant hedging that provides shelter and acts as a sound barrier. Try a living wall with different species of herbaceous plants, including edibles, grown in pockets and fixed to a wall (great for adding interest to plain brickwork). An arbour makes a delightful seating space and can be erected against a fence or the side of a house or be freestanding. Smothered in jasmine, wisteria, roses or evergreen climbers, it’s not only lovely to look at but a natural sanctuary and with the addition of a bench or garden seating can be a go-to place for unwinding at the end of the day. As dreams of sitting in a sunny spot in the garden get closer to becoming a reality as the days get longer, there are still things that need doing in the garden. As the RHS says, this month there are signs of the approaching spring, with bulbs appearing and wildlife waking

up as light levels and temperatures increase. Outdoors, as the garden comes to life again, it’s time to prune shrubs and climbers, such as Wisteria as well as evergreen hedges. Jobs for this month should include: • Prepare vegetable seed beds and sow vegetables under cover •

Chit potato tubers

• Protect blossom on apricots and peaches • Net fruit and vegetables to keep the birds off • Prune winter shrubs that have finished

flowering

• drops

Divide bulbs such as snow-

GREAT WALKS ON YOUR DOORSTEP - KEEP YOUR KIDS ACTIVE AND ENTERTAINED THIS HALF TERM

IT can be difficult to keep the children entertained during the half term break – and it can be just as difficult to fund the continuous days out and activities. But not all activities need to cost money and here in north Sheffield we are lucky to have fantastic countryside right on our doorstep. Whether you’re after stunning views or want to turn the outdoors into a classroom for your young ones with a walk steeped in history, we have great options. And although planning a walk can be daunting, Walkers Are Welcome do the hardest part for you. Today, there are over 100 towns and villages in England, Scotland and Wales that are nationally accredited Walkers Are Welcome locations, including Bradfield and Stocksbridge locally. Nationally, Walkers Are Welcome conducted a survey to collate the many achievements across the UK. Together, they have created over 1,200 new walking routes covering over 6,400 miles. This has opened up routes that had been abandoned, launched walking festivals and maintained thousands of miles of paths. WaW have promoted the use of public transport, publicised a wide variety of walking opportunities for all ages and abilities and helped to boost their local economies. The WaW scheme has put both Bradfield and Stocksbridge on the UK walking map. It has opened the eyes of both locals

and visitors to the opportunities on our doorstep. As local volunteers in this area, WaW have provided downloadable instructions for more than 50 walks in the Stocksbridge and Bradfield areas and contributed to interpretation panels providing information about landmarks and local history. A regular programme of walks, accompanied by a local historian, has been established and they have produced a leaflet for use by mobility-impaired walkers, especially users of wheelchairs and mobility scooters. They have worked with other organisations to provide guided walks. WaW will continue to bring the pleasures and benefits of walking to an ever-wider audience, and to offer a warm welcome to locals and visitors who, in turn, help to sustain our local businesses and facilities. For more information, check the following websites http://www.bradfield-walkers. org.uk, http://www.stocksbridge-walkers. org.uk and https://walkersarewelcome. org.uk/

Mackie crowned South Yorkshire Schools Cross champ FIVE juniors from Penistone Footpath Runners represented Barnsley at the South Yorkshire schools cross country championship at a very windy Campsall near Doncaster. Hugh Mackie claimed first place in the Year 10 and 11 Boys race and in the process gained selection to represent South Yorkshire in the English Schools cross country championships. CHURCH TAKE TALLY OF FOUR POINTS IN A WEEK PENISTONE Church racked up another four points in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division this week with a draw on Wednesday and a win on Saturday. On Wednesday, Church visited Yorkshire Amateur and came away with a 2-2 draw. Jordan Coduri and Tom Charlesworth were on target but an Ashley Flynn penalty and a late equasliser from Aidan Savory saw Amateur earn a share of the points. ON TARGET: Danny Howes

On Saturday, Church were away from home again, making the trip to Eccleshill United.

But it was to be a more fruitful journey this time, with Church scoring three goals to take all three points. Church had to wait for the second half to open their account but once Nathan Keightley put them ahead on 49 minutes, Danny Howes added a second just after the hour and Kieran Ryan put the icing on the cake in the dying stages of the contest. Manager Ian Richards said: “An excellent performance and result today, I’m really pleased for the players, I’m really pleased we got a clean sheet, we’ve been due one and we’ve de-

served one especially in difficult conditions like that even more so. “It’s going to give us a lot of confidence getting a clean sheet and it’s got to give us a lot of confidence scoring three goals. We now just have to focus on what’s in front of us. I’m really pleased to get the three points we now use that with a week of rest, recovery and training preparation for Staveley on Saturday.”

Stocksbridge Rugby come unstuck in the Leeds mud Leeds Modernians 48-9 Stocksbridge MISSING at least nine first team regulars, a patched up Stocksbridge Rugby made the trip to West Yorkshire more in hope than in expectation and found themselves on the wrong side of a 48-9 hammering at the hands of Leeds Modernians in the first round of the Yorkshire Division Four Premier League play-off season, leaving a real dent in their promotion hopes. The situation was further compounded when veteran fly half Ricky Christopherson was delayed after filling his petrol car up with diesel and had to be rescued! “What could go wrong, did go wrong,” said Stocksbridge director of rugby Andy Tyers. “The lads tried, but it just wasn’t going to be our day. We move on.” Against the odds but playing down a slope with the wind at their backs, the plucky visitors were the first to strike when Scott Bowskill slotted a penalty in difficult under foot conditions and a swirling wind. Stocksbridge had opportunity to score but couldn’t quite find the killer pass to unlock a keen Leeds Mods defensive line. Skipper Rowett and second row Beal and Whitaker caused the home side no end of problems with their surging runs. The home side took advantage of some hesitant Stocksbridge tackling to score two quickfire tries.

Although this was against the run of play, Leeds Mods took their chances when Stocksbridge Rugby didn’t. Tom Spencer, in his return to first team action, tackled well and produced a typically committed individual performance.

Although the situation was bordering on hopeless for the gallant but out gunned visitors, head coach Rhys Keenan can take some pride in the attitude and effort his troops delivered. The circumstances were just too much to counter.

However, bulky prop Gary Woodcock was forced to retire with concussion after a heavy collision. Bowskill kept Stocksbridge in touch with another well taken penalty goal and the visitors created further chances that went begging when ‘white line fever’ took over from playing simple, effective rugby.

A bout of handbags saw a yellow card for one of the home forwards, shortly followed by a further one for a high shot on Piggies skipper Rowett. However, Stocksbridge remained unable to make the most of their numerical advantage as Leeds Mods ran in a further four second half tries as the visitors simply ran out of gas.

A quick tap penalty caught the visitors sleeping and Leeds Mods scored a further try to increase their lead. Hard working back rower Rees Aspin was also forced to leave the field with suspected concussion to add to the visitors’ woes. Bowskill was on target again with another penalty, as was his opposing goal kicker on the stroke of half time, leaving the score 24-9 to Leeds. The second stanza was played almost exclusively in the Stocksbridge half, with the visitors seemingly unable to hold on to the ball to mount any meaningful offensives. Inspirational second rower Andy Beal became the third Stocksbridge player to succumb to injury, leaving the field with sore ribs after a heavy tackle.

The result leaves Stocksbridge in sixth spot in the Premier League. All the players deserve some credit for their efforts and commitment, but it was Sam Whitaker who again took the S&M Pipeworks man of the match award for his hard work in the loose and contribution to a dominant scrum. Skipper Rowett was full of praise for his team afterwards. He said: “With half a team missing and other issues, we did well with what we had. We need to re-group and get stuck into Burley next week.” Stocksbridge face a tough task this week as high flying Burley come to Coal Pit Lane in round two off the play off, kick off is 2.15pm and entry is free.

Strong winds challenge golfers at Stocksbridge SATURDAY saw some very strong winds making for difficult playing conditions in the fourth round of the Winter Cup at Stocksbridge Golf Club.

greens staff, who are working tirelessly to keep the course in the best condition possible.

The weather affected the size of the field, but 30 plus members braved 30 to 40 mph winds, conditions that are not unusual at this time of year for the club.

Dave Peace (14) was not perturbed by the conditions and played as if it was a calm summer’s day, scoring perhaps the best round of golf through the winter with 42 points, a winning margin for this round of five points.

Despite the conditions, the course was well presented again by the

Dave kept his nerve for 18 holes, not scoring a single six on any hole,

perhaps the best mark of a very solid round. Craig Brailsford (14) came in a distant second with 37 points, still a very impressive score for the playing conditions. Eric Wilkinson (9) came in third with 36 points, beating Nasser Hassan (15), Martin Bye (11) and Richard Hastings (16) into fourth and fifth with the same points score, but a better back nine.

The leaderboard for the overall Winter Cup League remains close, Richard Hasting retaining his aggregate lead with 157 points. Dave Peace’s round has catapulted him up to second with 147 points. Club captain Steven Haigh and Paul Smith share 3rd place with 143 points. Eric Wilkinson has moved up to fifth place with 140 points and Dave Stringer has dropped to sixth with 139 points. There is still

plenty of time for these and other players to change things at the top. Club professional Roger Broad said: “The weather has affected the amount of rounds possible so far for the Winter Cup, but despite this when the Cup is playable, the competition is fierce and the standard of golf really high considering the time of year.”

STEELS CHALK UP ANOTHER WIN Stocksbridge PS 2-1 Sutton Coldfield Town

Match Report: David Bradley Photo: Chris Clancy

STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels continued their impressive run at Look Local Stadium on Saturday with a deserved win after a gutsy performance against Sutton Coldfield. The visitors started well but the impressive defensive performances of late continued, and it was striker Lewis Whitham who opened the scoring with a fine solo effort. On 39 minutes, his strike partner Luke Mangham found space to meet a perfect cross, and headed home from close range.

The second half showed the crowd how far the impressive young Steels side have developed this season with a great defensive show that limited the visitors to very little opportunities. And it was nearly over when somehow the visitors managed a consolation goal through Reece Gibson.
