SHEFFIELD VOTES FOR CHANGE CONSERVATIVES WIN IN PENISTONE & STOCKSBRIDGE

Here’s a brief summary of results from north Sheffield wards 2021;

The Conservative Party won the Stocksbridge & Upper Don Ward to make Lewis Chinchen the first Conservative elected to Sheffield City Council in a generation. Lewis said: "I am delighted to be elected as Councillor for Stocksbridge and Upper Don and thank everyone who voted for me. I spoke to hundreds of residents during the campaign about the local issues which were important to them and I look forward to being able to work on those now. I am proud of the positive campaign we ran and I will continue to work closely with residents throughout my term. However you voted, I want to be a strong voice for everyone in the ward and assist residents in any way I can"

West Ecclesfield Ward

The Conservatives also held the Penistone East ward on Barnsley Council with Cllr John Wilson, the Conservative group leader on Barnsley Council winning with a large majority. Miriam Cates MP for Penistone & Stocksbridge said: "I’m looking forward to working with Lewis and John to deliver for our communities in Penistone and Stocksbridge."

LABOUR LOSES CONTROL OF SHEFFIELD COUNCIL The Labour party lost eight seats, meaning the council now goes to no overall control. In the biggest shock, Bob Johnson leader of the Sheffield City Council, lost his Hillsborough ward to the Green Party candidate, Christine Killigan Kubo. The Green Party made significant inroads into the make-up of the council, and now holds 13 seats. In Barnsley, Labour's Nicola Sumner held the Rockingham ward BY A COIN TOSS after tying with Conservative candidate Roy Garratt.

SHEFFIELD VOTES FOR CHANGE IN REFERENDUM Sheffield City Council will also move to a committee model of decision-making after a citizen-led campaign led to 65% of voters calling for a change to the way the Council is run. The successful It’s Our City campaign, which triggered the vote after gaining over 26,000 signatures from local people, was launched after the Council’s handling of the street tree dispute raised questions about accountability and oversight. 140,186 votes were cast, and 89,670 voted to switch to the committee model.
