Local Joiner Conquers Three Peaks for St Luke's Hospice
In a remarkable display of determination and compassion, Neil Rattenbury, a beloved local joiner, recently embarked on an inspiring journey to conquer the formidable Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge. With unwavering dedication, Neil scaled the majestic peaks of Pen y ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough, reaching an altitude of 736 meters, all in support of St Luke's Hospice.
On a sunny Saturday, the 10th of June, Neil, from Stocksbridge embarked on his adventure, commencing his circular walk from the picturesque village of Horton in Ribblesdale. Little did he know that his selfless endeavour would touch the hearts of countless individuals along the way.
As Neil, 64, ventured through the rugged terrain, he unexpectedly crossed paths with other walkers who were also participating in the challenge to support the same noble cause. In this serendipitous encounter, strangers turned into kindred spirits, bound by a shared mission to make a difference in the lives of those in need.
Neil's decision to undertake this arduous feat was deeply rooted in his desire to honour the memory of dear friends who had relied on end-of-life care. With every step, he aimed to create a lasting tribute
to their lives, ensuring their legacy would live on through his charitable actions. Grateful for the overwhelming support he received, Neil expressed his heartfelt appreciation, saying, "A big thanks to my family, friends, customers, and Mills chip shop, who have come together to raise an incredible £681.00 for St Luke's Hospice so far." His words resonated with the warmth and sincerity that radiated from his very being, reflecting the profound gratitude he felt towards the community that had rallied behind him.
Neil's inspiring achievement not only showcased his unwavering determination but also highlighted the power of unity and the extraordinary capacity of the human spirit to bring about positive change. Through his feat, he demonstrated that even an ordinary person with a resolute heart can make a significant impact on the lives of others.
The funds raised by Neil's endeavour will undoubtedly provide invaluable support to St Luke's Hospice, enabling them to continue their vital work in caring for individuals facing the end of life. Every pound raised will help create a haven of comfort and compassion for patients and their families during the most challenging of times.

Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre celebrated Volunteer Week (Thursday 1st JuneWednesday 7th June) by inviting all their volunteers to two scheduled afternoon teas which were held at the Leisure Centre.
The afternoon teas were an ideal opportunity for the volunteers to meet up with each other, and also enjoy a delicious afternoon tea provided by Oxley's Cafe. The afternoon celebrations also included thank you speeches by the Board of Trustees and a special musical performance by David Moffatt, who kindly offered to assist with the celebrations on both dates.
Other items also took place at the Leisure Centre throughout the week, to mark volunteering week, including a Volunteer Drop In Session for new volunteers, who wished to call into the Leisure Centre and discuss the volunteering opportunities at SCLC.
Julie Martin, Asst Centre Manager - Operations commented "The Volunteer Celebrations which took place throughout the week here at SCLC, was an opportunity for the Board of Trustees, Staff and Customers, to give their heartfelt thanks to all our Volunteers for their assistance and dedication towards volunteering at SCLC, since the Leisure Centre re-opened." "It was lovely to see so many of our amazing volunteer team attend and enjoy their afternoon celebrations and we would like to thank all our dedicated volunteers for all their support, we wouldn't be where we are today without their continued assistance."
If you would like any further information regarding volunteering and joining the volunteer team at Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre, please contact Julie Martin, Asst. Centre Manager - Operations on 0114 2883792, or email admin@stocksbridgeclc.co.uk for further details. Volunteering information is also available via our website www.stocksbridgeclc.co.uk.
VOLUNTEERS WEEK CELEBRATED
The sun blazed down on Penistone last weekend as the town celebrated their annual Gala, organised by the Penistone Round Table.
The fun kicked off on Saturday night at the Paramount Cinema; as Tristan Drew and the guys of 80s Regeneration had us all up out of our seats, dancing and singing along to pop classics of the era - some serious shapes were thrown and some of us are still feeling the effects!!! All profits went to the Mayor's charity Barnsley Sexual Abuse and Rape Crisis Service.
On Sunday morning the first event was Jack and Paul's 2K Fun Run, organised by Claire Throssell MBE in aid of her charity Heads Together Barnsley; followed by the Mayor's Parade through Penistone and an afternoon spent enjoying the live acts and demonstrations, stalls, displays, fairground and of course the drinks tent!
Man anD a PraM VISIT
Written by Georgina Stanley.I’m Georgina and I’m an outsider. Not just to Stocksbridge, but to Sheffield. So when it was announced John Birkhill – The Man with the Pram –was going to attend our Women’s Institute meeting, I really didn’t get everyone’s excitement. Yes, I’ve seen him around, yes, I knew he collected money for Macmillan, but didn’t get why.
I also knew by the time he came to see us, he’d raised the £1million he wanted.
I walked along Manchester Road and saw him interacting with people. They’d come out to see him. He had no fear about talking to them and didn’t mind stopping to talk. He came inside and said hello to everyone in the room. Eventually he sat down to talk. The room, including me, was engrossed. He was so humble, it wasn’t him that had collected all the money, it was all of us that had given it. He talked about his Wife and Daughter, he talked about how
old the pram is. He mentioned he was a race walker.
The overwhelming thing that came through him talking to us was his humility. He didn’t change when he met the late Queen Elizabeth II. He’s done 1039 10k’s, half marathons and marathons. That was just a matter of fact. We were all amazed at that. He knows about the campaign for him to nominated for the Pride of Britain Awards – he thinks Kevin Sinfield will win. His London 2012 torch is priceless to him – and wants it to go to a museum when he doesn’t need it anymore.
I now understand WHY Sheffield and Yorkshire love him. I’m glad we had him come and talk to us (and boy, he can talk!) and we need to keep supporting him and keep him going. If you get the opportunity to hear him talk - take it. You won’t be bored. And yes, he’s going to keep going.
Money collected in Deepcar and Stocksbridge on his walk through last Wednesday was £478.97!

High Green In Bloom
High Green In Bloom are a small group of volunteers whose aim is to enhance the appearance of our village through horticulture. Nearly all the plants and trees we use are purchased from our own funds which our community has helped us raise. This probably fits the profile of other similar groups in the area , funding their activities with money they have raised themselves.
We have just completed our summer planting in Mortomley Park and in the many containers we have sited around the village. Unfortunately, some low-life has crawled out from under its stone and stripped out all the plants from the two containers at the village entrance at Howbrook crossroads. This is not the first time these containers have been vandalised. Therefore we have taken the decision to remove these when time and manpower allows and resite them elsewhere.
To all those who have appreciated the displays at the village entrance, we regret that we have to follow this course of action, but see no point whatsoever in continuously throwing our money and time away.
D.Cooper, Chairman HGIBFoodie line up announced for the Fox Valley Food and Drink Festival
Food lovers are in for a treat this weekend when the Fox Valley annual Food and Drink Festival takes place on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 June.
One of the centre’s most popular events is set to host over 60 food and drink vendors, making it the biggest food festival held to date. Foodies will be spoilt for choice over the weekend with dishes from around the globe including Greek, Jamaican, Turkish, Mexican, Italian and Indian.
Shoppers looking for something sweeter will be able to find the most delicious crepes, pancakes, cheesecakes, artisan doughnuts, candy floss, cookies and 'Pick N Mix' for on the go. Adults will be able to enjoy a variety of alcoholic beverages on offer including alcoholic slushies from The Slushie Rascal, Real Ale from Bradfield Brewery and fruity gins from the Gin Muddlers.
Centre Manager for Fox Valley, Claire Biltcliffe, said: “We are really looking forward to our annual Food Festival this weekend and we're delighted with the line up of traders, which is the largest the centre has seen to date.”
“As well as food stands, visitors can expect to find a packed programme of live music spanning the weekend inside our entertainment tipi.
“A bar area, free face painting and children’s fairground rides will also be on the centre, ensuring there is something for the whole family to enjoy.”
The free two-day event has been jointly sponsored by Stocksbridge Town Council and Barratt and David Wilson Homes and will see the Mayor of Stockbridge, Cllr. Mark Whittaker, open the event on Saturday at 11am.
Alongside the live music in the Tipi, there will be lots of entertainment held in the fountain area over the weekend including the annual Valley Music Festival, showcasing local talent on the Saturday and giant traditional games on the lawn on Sunday.
Pet owners are urged to bring their furry friends to join in with the family fun as there will be lots of traders catering for your pooch such as Flossy’s Dog Goodies with their natural dog treats, handmade snuffle mats, balls
and tugs and Daisy Dukes Designs with their matching dog accessories.
The event is held in partnership with the centre’s adopted charity for this year, Sheffield Churches Council for Community Care (SCCCC). The charity aims to use Fox Valley as a space to bring the local community together through a range of activities that can be enjoyed by all ages. Here’s the full music line up for the weekend:

2,200 workers made redundant at Sheffield based couriers
More than 2,000 workers are to be made redundant after delivery firm Tuffnells Parcels Express went into administration, writes Tim Dale for BBC News.
The Sheffield-based business has appointed joint administrators at Interpath Advisory after failing to secure new funding.
The majority of Tuffnells' 2,200 employees, working across its 33 UK depots, will be made redundant, Interpath said.
Just 128 staff have been retained.
All its transport hubs and depots have been closed.
'Devastating'
Rick Harrison, joint administrator, said Tuffnells provided delivery services to more than 4,000 businesses across the UK under its 'The Big Green Parcel Machine' brand.
"Unfortunately, the highly competitive nature of the UK parcel delivery market, coupled with significant inflation across the company's fixed cost base in recent times, has re-
sulted in the company experiencing intense pressure on cashflow."
Mr Harrison said he appreciated the news would be "devastating" for employees.
"Regrettably, with deliveries suspended and with no prospect of them resuming in the immediate term, we have had to make the majority of staff redundant."
He said their first priority would be to support all those affected and helping them to
make claims to the Redundancy Payments Office.
Joint administrator Howard Smith said customers would be aware all the firm's transport hubs and depots were shut.
"Our team will be making contact with customers over the coming days to arrange parcel collection," he added.
EXPERIENCE BARNSLEY PREPARES FOR 10TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS
A museum set up to share the experiences of Barnsley and tell the story of its people is preparing for a jampacked birthday party for its 10th anniversary celebrations this summer.
Experience Barnsley, which is based in Barnsley Town Hall, marks its first decade in June with a huge party for the community featuring a massive birthday card, cake, a giant replica cardboard cut-out of the Town Hall and a very special auction.
Everyone is invited to join the birthday party on June 27 where visitors will be able to enjoy a slice of cake, sign a massive birthday card (online or in person), and share their memories of Barnsley as they celebrate the last ten years of the museum.
As part of the celebrations, the museum is planning to auction off King Tut – one that many residents and visitors to Barnsley may recognise as the sarcophagus that
stood in the telephone box across from the Town Hall.
A number of schools are invited for the day as Experience Barnsley encourages as many people as possible to join the party.
The museum opened in Barnsley Town Hall on June 27, 2013, with the aim of being a place where locals could explore their heritage and visitors could discover more about the borough. Acting as the people’s museum, it is curated by the people, for the people and about the people.
Experience Barnsley is a space for the community, bringing people together and their work, which spans exhibitions in the space, an extensive outreach programme and multiple community groups such as Feels Like Home, Afaab, Age UK, u3a, and Butterflies Dementia Support and Activities Group.
While the museum has only been welcoming visitors for 10 years, the
objects, photos, documents, films, and stories it houses have been collated and collected over a much longer period.
Telling these stories has only been possible because of the support and donations from people living in the borough, and from those who left Barnsley but still feel the strong ties of shared heritage. The volume of material and the generosity of donors has been the museum’s biggest strength.
Over the years, Experience Barnsley has seen various high-profile exhibitions featuring The Romans, Ancient Egypt, the World Wars, Slazenger, Star Wars and the 80s.
Save the date for Experience Barnsley’s birthday party this 27 June and keep an eye on @BarnsleyMuseums social feeds to vote for your favourite moment from the last 10 years.

First started over 30 years ago by Barnsley Rockley Rotary club, the race runs around the 72 mile geographical boundary of Barnsley in 10 legs. It runs adjacent to the boundaries of Sheffield, Kirklees, Wakefield, Doncaster and Rotherham.
Starting at Cannon Hall at 8am the teams ran first to West Bretton and onwards taking in Brierley, Thurnscoe, Brampton, Tankersley, Wortley, Langsett, Winscar, Upper Denby and finally back to Cannon Hall.
It was a very hot sunny day and this proved challenging for most runners but the dry conditions meant there were some very fast times.

The local running clubs Barnsley AC, Barnsley Harriers, Kingstone, Penistone and Denby Dale were joined by teams from Rotherham, Kimberworth, Ackworth, Team Manvers and Valley Hill in Sheffield. There were non-running clubs from Barnsley Council and a team called Runners without a cause.

Barnsley Harriers won the ladies over50 category. In the competition for nonrunning clubs the winners were Runners without a cause with Barnsley Council second.
The presentation took place at the newly renovated New Inn in Penistone where over
Penistone youngsters were in action at the Jack and Pauls fun run. Flynn Rogers was first in his age category and Grace Williams was second in her age category.
A few Penistone runners competed in the fast Loxley Lash 5k. Martin Ball broke 18 minutes for the first time.

Steels Chairman Graham Furness said: "I am absolutely delighted to welcome Mark as the new manager of Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves.
"His success with the U18s speaks for itself after his tremendous success in the league cup competitions his team has been in.

SHEFFIELD ‘turnED tHE ScrEw’
ished really strong, we turned the screw a little bit and that was good.
“Wolverhampton is a really tough place to go though, they’ve got some great riders who ride their place very, very well.
Stead admitted he struggled to find too many positives from their 51-39 defeat at Ipswich on Monday.
It was the Tru Plant Tigers’ fourth defeat in their last five Sports Insure Premiership away fixtures on another tricky night on their travels. They were restricted to just three heat advantages at Foxhall and five race winnerswith No.1 Tobiasz Musielak taking the chequered flag for three of those.
They also suffered ten last places and Stead has stressed
that his side need to step things up on the road.
“We know we need to improve away from home,” he said.
“It’s difficult to find many positives out of a loss like that.
“Tobi’s performance certainly is one of them, he rode out of his skin.
“There’s a number of them who have done their job but it’s black and white for all to see when you look at the scorecard where we weren’t good enough in certain areas.”
The two teams meet again at Owlerton on Thursday night (June 15, 7.30) - but that is a Premiership R1 fixture with the aggregate score there standing at 47-43 in Ipswich’s favour from the first time they met at Foxhall in April.
IPSWICH 51: Emil Sayfutdinov 13+1, Jason Doyle 12, Danny King 11, Keynan Rew 10+3, Danyon Hume 5, Joe Thompson 0, Ben Barker R/R.
SHEFFIELD 39: Tobiasz Musielak 15, Adam Ellis 7, Lewis Kerr 6+2, Jack Holder 6, Kyle Howarth 3, Dan Gilkes 2+1, David Bellego 0.
SHEFFIELD boss Simon
Stead says he was particularly pleased with how his side ‘turned the screw’ in their Sports Insure Premiership Knockout Cup SemiFinal win over Wolverhampton.
The Tru Plant Tigers eventually built up an 18-point advantage as they came out on top 54-36 - but it was a fine late effort that helped them gain so much control in the tie.
Just six points separated the two teams at the in -
terval with the visitors growing in confidence after reeling off four straight race wins. But Sheffield came back out in stunning form as they weighed in with three 5-1s in the final four heats to put themselves in the driving seat ahead of the decider at Monmore Green on Monday, June 19. Said Stead: “They were keeping us honest a lot of the way through the meeting.
“So we had to regroup a little bit and we fin -
“So while 18 points is something I’m happy with, it’s still only half the job done and we still know we need to finish it off at Wolves.”
In the meantime, the Tru Plant Tigers now turn their attentions back to the league.
They head to Ipswich on Monday (June 12, 7.30) before hosting the Witches, who are spearheaded by world stars Jason Doyle and Emil Sayfutdinov, on Thursday, June 15 (7.30).
