rEsPonds to tuffnElls GoinG into AdministrAtion

Following the announcement that Tuffnells Parcels Express, a Sheffield-based parcel delivery business, has gone into administration, Sheffield City Council is working with Jobcentre Plus and South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority to offer support to staff who are likely to be made redundant.

Of the 2,200 staff nationally, 347 people will be affected in Sheffield, with the majority of roles in the administration, driving or warehouse specialisms. When a large employer goes into administration, a Rapid Response Service is put in place to support staff impacted by the closure. This service is facilitated through Jobcentre Plus and includes key local partners – in this case likely to be the National Careers Service and Invest Sheffield and provides people who have lost their jobs with services to help them find a new role in a similar sector.

Councillor Martin Smith, Committee Chair for Economic Development and Skills, said:

“The closure of Tuffnells will be concerning for many residents, particularly those who have lost their jobs.

“To support people who have been made redundant, the Rapid Response Service will be rolled out, which will support people to find new work in their sector. This vital service will help give people the confidence and knowledge they need to rebuild their careers following the sad news of the Tuffnells closure. Tuffnells employees who have been made redundant can access support services through their local job centre, where they will be provided with additional resources and bespoke services including CV writing support, interview skills and job search advice.

Students Shine at Awards

On Thursday 8 June 2023, Stocksbridge High School held an awards ceremony for students that have demonstrated great commitment, dedication and hard work. In front of their families, school governors and local councillors more than 60 young people were awarded for their hard work and achievements. Everyone entered the ceremony on a red carpet lined with Hollywood-style stars of fame, one for every student attending.

All subject areas gave an award for effort to a student in every year group as well as recognition from the pastoral team for positive and courageous behaviour. The special Silversmith and Andy Hoyland trophies were awarded for significant contributions to school life, both in memory of teachers at the school. There was also a Headteacher’s Award to the student who consistently attends, works hard and tries their best.

The event was organised by Paul Schuller, the Head of Science who said: “it has been an absolute privilege to share the success of our students with their families and the wider community. It did prove a very difficult task for staff to nominate students and we could have filled our hall 4 to 5 times over. There will be a wider recognition of success later in the term in our celebration events and assemblies”.

MUSIC MAKES MEMORIES

The new Music Makes Memories' Friendship Lunch at the Devonshire Arms on Herries Rd is proving to be so successful that it is now to be held bi-monthly.

Kathy Markwick, Freelance Community Consultant, who launched Friendship Lunches in South Yorks 7 years ago said "The new General Manager, Gemma Barrett, and her team are hugely enthusiastic about their Friendship Lunch, which comprises a delicious two course lunch and entertainment with the fantastic Oliver Harris.

Last month's event was kindly sponsored by Twelve Trees Care and poster sponsors, SCCCC and Norrie Waite Slater. The event is aimed at the elderly, lonely and/or socially isolated and offers a wonderful opportunity to meet old/make new friends, to dine and to have a dance.

It is also 'dementia friendly' and therefore ideal for those who live with this dreadful disease, and other health conditions, offering invaluable respite. It may be that those living with dementia do not remember the event afterwards but they undoubtedly enjoy the moment and that is hugely important for them and their families/carers.

The next Friendship Lunch is on Thursday 22 June with Oliver Harris - tickets are £12 and MUST be booked in advance by contacting the venue on 0114 2425273.

COURT: Prolific Sheffield shoplifter jailed

A man has been jailed following a series of shoplifting offences in the Ecclesfield area in recent months.

On Friday (9 June), the local policing neighbourhood team arrested Callum Ripley on suspicion of a number of shoplifting offences. Ripley, age 30, from Ecclesfield, was later charged with 13 shoplifting offences and remanded into custody.

Ripley plead guilty to all of the offences, and appeared before Sheffield Magistrates Court on Saturday (10 June). He was sentenced to 18 weeks in prison, as well as a further 16 weeks following a previous suspended sentence, totalling a 34-week sentence.

Sergeant Matt Cook from the Ecclesfield policing team said: “Shoplifting offences are not victimless crimes and have an impact on the company and members of the local community who work there. Ripley’s offending has been prolific in recent months and I am pleased he is now behind bars and facing a custodial sentence for his actions.

“Members of the public should also be reminded that anybody buying stolen items from thieves are also liable for prosecution for handling stolen goods.”

A packed programme of entertainment was provided alongside the mass of food choices for families, couples and friends to enjoy, including children’s rides, free glitter tattoos, a bar area and live music hosted in two stage areas at the centre.

Crowds gathered in the centres piazza area and on the Saturday as Valley Music Festival hosted their annual performances in the bandstand bringing live music to the nearby restaurants and creating a fantastic atmosphere throughout the whole centre. On Sunday, the fountain area brought lively competition to families as they went head-to-head playing the giant garden games.

The entertainment tipi showcased a line-up of local talent with vocalists and bands taking to the stage.

Claire Biltcliffe, Centre Manager at Fox Valley, said: “It has been an amazing two days with a record footfall of over 16,000 people creating a really great atmosphere across the centre, with most traders selling out by 4pm.”

“The Fox Valley team have all worked really hard this weekend to make the event run smoothly and we have had loads of great feedback from customers.”

Sheffield Tigers and Eric Stead MG Perfect PartnershiP

Over the past 3 years, Sheffield’s speedway team, the Sheffield Tigers, have been proudly sponsored by local familyrun MG car dealership, Eric Stead MG. Stemming from a long-standing history between the two, this partnership is more than local Sheffield businesses supporting one another. The Stead family are proud to give back to a sport that has given them so much.

Eric Stead MG’s connections to Sheffield Speedway span over 45 years. The late Eric Stead, founder of the dealership, worked as clerk of the course in the 1970s when his Rover dealership was a prominent sponsor of the Sheffield Tigers. The dealership has maintained their relationship with them ever since.

Today, Eric’s grandson, Simon Stead, not only works for the family business but is also heavily involved in Sheffield Speedway. Starting his speedway career in 1999, Simon raced for his local club, the Sheffield Tigers, for eight seasons. A successful career saw Simon winning the league title in 1999 and 2002, crowned Premier League Riders’ Champion in 2014 and 2016, before his retirement and eventual move to Club Manager in 2017. This was a natural progression for Simon who man-

8.9%

aged the Sheffield Tigers to win the league title in 2017.

Alongside commentating for Euro Sport, BT Sport and Sky Sports, Simon has proudly managed team Great Britain since 2020. Simon guided the GB speedway team to victory in 2021, winning the World Championship for the first time in over 40 years. This heavy involvement in both the speedway world and the family business meant it was an easy decision for the two businesses to support one another.

Ryan Guest, Sheffield Tigers Club Press Office, commented: “The partnership between the Sheffield Tigers and Eric Stead MG has helped both businesses massively. From a Sheffield Speedway point of view, sponsorship plays a huge part in helping fund our essential outgoings throughout the course of a season. We focus on creating strong partnerships with businesses in our local area and do what we can to help promote their company.”

Simon Stead commented: “As a Sheffield business, Eric Stead MG look to support local companies where we can, previously donating to charities within the area. With my connection to Sheffield Speedway and the previous link my grandfather had, the sponsorship of Sheffield Tigers feels like

the perfect opportunity for us to give back. We are thrilled to support Sheffield Speedway and look forward to a successful season ahead.”

MG is the fastest growing car brand in the UK, fielding a six-car range of practical and affordable hatchbacks, SWs and SUVs. MGs are spacious, packed with technology and perfect for modern life. Built with world-class components,

all MG models are backed by a comprehensive manufacturer’s 7-year warranty.

search into local history and industry as part of the project. Volunteers will also be recruited to record stories from people that can still remember the area in the pre-WW2/post-WW2 period. Local schools will be involved in the project which is aiming to bring the area’s fascinating social heritage to a far wider audience.

A National Lottery Heritage Fund grant will help bring bygone Hillsborough back to life

The Hillsborough and Owlerton History Group have been awarded a grant of £40,180 to allow them to research, develop and preserve the social history of the area in the 1930s and 1940s.

The two-year project – which took nearly 18 months to develop – was inspired following the chance discovery of four cinefilms from the era that provide a fascinating insight into the area in the period.

The films underpin the new project and provide a rare glimpse into life in the interwar and postwar period.

Knowledge from the films will form the basis for further re-

The project will culminate in an exhibition and publishing of two books.

Helen Featherstone, Director, England, North at The National Lottery Heritage Fund said: “Thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, we are thrilled to support the Hillsborough and Owlerton History Group to explore and preserve local history. Playzones in Sheffield

Sheffield City Council are working in partnership with the Football Foundation on the new PlayZones Programme, and they need your input!

This is an exciting new project looking at renovating old Multi-Use Games Areas [MUGAs] into PlayZones and building new PlayZones from scratch. This project aims to tackle inequalities in physical activity and provide access to high-quality community facilities in local, accessible spaces. We are looking to find out more about how people feel about this proposal and learn what needs

to be included in the project to make it work for your local area.

As this is a new type of MUGA currently unseen elsewhere in the country, SCC are looking to develop a very small number of these sites in the first instance to make sure they develop, activate, and learn from them alongside the local community. SCC are really open to ideas, suggestions and feedback to help guide the project.

The first parks site SCC are looking to develop is Ecclesfield Park.

Armed forces day

Editor,

To mark Armed Forces Day on 24 June, I would like to take this opportunity to highlight the important work that the members of the UK Armed Forces, and the RAF in particular, do in keeping us safe by defending the UK and its interests, at home and abroad. The people of our Armed Forces, day in day out, are ever vigilant, identifying and responding to threats that could affect us and our families, but they are also ready to prevent conflict and ready to deliver urgent assistance that is needed here in the UK or around the world.

Armed Forces Day gives us the chance to collectively show support for the military community, including the RAF, from serving personnel to families, veterans, cadets, and reservists.

The RAF continues to respond to events in Ukraine, including patrolling the skies, delivering humanitarian and military supplies, and the RAF Regiment training alongside the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the UK. In 2022, more than 7,250 personnel were deployed in 75 countries and directly supported 41 operations across five continents and the Falkland Islands.

As we all mourned the death of her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the RAF conveyed her Late Majesty from Edinburgh to RAF Northolt with dignity, professionalism, and utmost care. And more recently, the RAF also provided both ceremonial and security support for Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla’s Coronation. [KJ1]

Armed Forces Day is a great occasion to remind all in our RAF Family, those who have served, are serving, and their families, that the RAF Benevolent Fund is here to support them in their time of need. Whether that be with practical, emotional, or financial support, we are here to help as we have been for over 100 years.

To find out more about the work we do, or how we could support you, visit rafbf.org.

‘And No Birds Sing’

There’s no doubt in my mind that the British public will kill off our countryside a lot faster than climate change. I thought our teenagers were all savvy where environmental issues are concerned. Apparently not if Friday night on Whitwell Moor was anything to go by. This is private land designated ‘open country’ which means people may walk across. People on foot that is – ‘Open Country’ does not apply to loose dogs or bicycles. This is the law. It is a breeding habitat for curlew, skylark, short eared owl, lapwing and golden plover as well as grouse. All these are ground nesting and are rearing their young at the moment. Yes – we still have some but numbers are well down mainly due to loss of habitat. As students in the 70s we were encouraged to read ‘And No Birds Sing’ by Rachel Carson. We are now much nearer that dreadful state than we were then. Several hundred teenagers partying on Whitwell cannot help. If they had been five year olds they couldn’t have left a greater mess. Cans, bottles, broken glass and litter. Those farming on that land and living there spent Saturday clearing up. Some of the youngsters returned to help – most did not.

Earlier this month we had a noisy, litter strewn rave in Ewden. Last week a BBQ was left burning down there too and a fire had to be put out by the Fire Brigade. Do any of these people ever use their brains?

The countryside, whether open moorland or farmers’ fields is not one big recreational space for partying or adventure activities, or for that matter, playing ball with your dog. It is a working, living environment. A habitat for wildlife and forms a livelihood for farmers. Respecting these various needs is the first priority. Please keep to footpaths, please respect open ground, please keep your dog under control and, please teach your children to do these things too.

Morehall

I walk along the tree-lined lane, an avenue in all but name. On either side great trees stand high, their branches arching for the sky. Horse Chestnut, Conifer and Beech, each one gifting fruit to those who live beyond mans reach Midst these giants on the bank, Rhododendron, Holly, and Elder flank. All this fruit presented for a feast, for squirrel, blackbird, thrush and any other little beast!

I look to my right, my eyes awake, an ocean blue? No, a man made lake!

Close to the bank the ducks swim by, wild geese from foreign lands glide down from the sky. Gathering together upon the bank each one the other must out-flank For bread rains down from people walking by, a friendly gift to them but why? Perhaps with beauty all around mans kinder feelings can be found?

At last I reach the great Dam wall, with majestic pump-house standing tall The cast iron gate creeks a welcome unto me, I release the lead and my dog runs free!

Along the wall I gently stroll, meet friends of old and bygone tales recall Steel mill stories of characters, stupid, fierce, hard-working, witty good and bad

Who was the guy that dared to swear at Billy's dad?

And having spoke of friends I knew, my mind turns to another chosen few The stones within the wall cry out, the craftsmanship is all about. Each mighty stone fits neighbour so precise, no room for water, soil or ice!

Who were the ones that crafted, handled, placed them there for all to see Not gods, not lords, mere men with pride, their names unknown to you and me

At last I reach the overflow, cascades of water roar, An audible reminder of the weather gone before. The water flows so evenly o'er stone placed in perfect geometry

As I stand upon that arching bridge, the craftsmanship is there for to see, Yet once again those unnamed men have left their mark upon our history.

Beyond and round the corner the Boathouse beckons me I stroll along the dusty sometimes-muddy path, old "Jake" for company. Well short of boathouse to the right, the bench seat stands afore, looking down on the fisherman casting from the shore. With weary leg and troubled mind I hear it call my name, And though I've much to do this day, I sit hear just the same!

I look upon the beauty all around which lifts my spirit from the ground. The sun in its kingdom stands, and casts its light o'er water and the land, The ripple of the water, the song of a bird, within this valley, only nature's voice is heard. If I were king with power, wealth and choice, I'd choose this as my resting place, a heaven where souls rejoice. In no dark tomb would I lie, dressed in refinerie I'd rather be a speck of dust lying in this tranquillity.

‘You’re a liar’

Dear look local

Anybody remember the protesters at Fox Valley when the now convicted ex prime minister visited in 2019 ? They sang loudly "you're a liar"to the tune of Clementine .....o my darling.. and under new laws brought in and voted through by our MP's party they could now be arrested if the police decided such behaviour was a nuisance.

Rumours went round at the time of hard left activists coming in including a biker from Wakefield . I can now reveal that of the three lead singers (quite a few people sang along) the aging couple could have sang in protest from their front door and still be heard by the PM and his entourage and 'the biker' could have walked down from his front door in a few minutes.

I know this is true because I was one of them. What is true matters and it was common knowledge at the time that Johnson did not deal in the truth and that with his record he would not have qualified for a job as a school caretaker never mind leader of the country.

So why did so many in power including our MP (who we can soon vote for .....or not) choose to stand by him for so long? One reason they give is that he's an election winner. Well, with all due respect when he won we voted for what he said and what he says has proved to be worth so very little.

We are all things energy

Another in our occasional series. We’ve changed our name!!!

You may have noticed that our name has changed…slightly. But don’t worry; we are still the same group with the same values and aims. We have just changed the wording to move in line with other similar groups across the country.

Thermal Imaging surveys

We have paused our thermal imaging surveys now until the autumn. This is because we need a big difference in temperature between the inside of a heated house and the cooler outside. It may be happening more slowly than we’d like, but the outdoor temperatures are now rising, so survey results would not be of any use. We’ll start again in October and remember; anyone can book a survey! Please contact us at the address or number below for further details.

Next home visit – Retrofitting 70s and 80s semis or detached houses.

Our next home visit is on Saturday 8th July in Oughtibridge, from 12.30 pm to 5pm. We have the exciting opportunity to see two homes with many installations including: different types of insulation, mechanical ventilation system, photovoltaics, heat pump, battery storage, ev charger and some smart tech that can be used to control it all and maximise the use of your energy. The visit will start and finish at The Cock Inn, Bridge Hill, Oughtibridge. If you would like to join us, please email or call on the details below. In the past, places have been taken up quickly so if you are interested please ask us for further information soon!

Medics announce potential strike dates

Hospital consultants in England will go on strike on 20th and 21st July if their ballot, which closes at the end of June, is successful and the Government continues to refuse to come forward with a credible pay offer.

The Britis Medical Association is currently balloting its consultant members in England for industrial action over repeated real-terms pay cuts, with the result expected shortly after the vote closes on 27th June.

In the event of a successful result and the absence of an acceptable offer, during the two days of action consultants will provide Christmas Day cover, meaning they will continue to provide all emergency services but routine services will need to be paused.

Given the unique position of consultants as the NHS’s most senior clinicians, whose roles cannot be covered by other staff, the BMA is announcing its potential strike dates before the ballot has closed to give hospital trusts and colleagues good notice so that preparations can be made to reschedule appointments, prioritise the most urgent cases and ensure patient safety during any action.

Dr Vishal Sharma, BMA consultants committee chair, said:

“Strike action is not inevitable and it is well within the Government’s gift to present us with a reasonable offer that would stop industrial action in its tracks.

“But if this isn’t forthcoming, we are committed to action that is effective and that is safe. As the most senior and experienced doctors working in hospitals, no one can cover for consultants – and that’s why we’re giving our members, our colleagues and employers lengthy time to prepare, even ahead of our ballot closing. That way they can manage their lists and prioritise those patients most in need of care. We are also reiterating that any strike action will still deliver Christmas Day levels of care – meaning emergency departments will still be open and staffed with consultants.

“We know consultants do not take decisions around industrial action lightly, but this isn’t just about pay – it’s about protecting the future of the NHS. If we sit by and accept further real-terms pay cuts we will continue to lose more of our most senior and experienced clinicians at a time when the NHS and patients need them most.

“We want to create an environment in the NHS that consultants want to work in, and that junior doctors can see their future in. Industrial action is a last resort, but there is simply no justification for consultants today being valued a third less than they were 15 years ago.

“The Government now has six weeks to come back to the table, with a fair and reasonable proposal that can prevent any industrial action from having to take place.”

Hillsborough Park:

Plans for a new multi-activity centre at Hillsborough Park have been allowed to go ahead by Sheffield councillors who heard that the scheme has divided opinion in the area, writes Julia Armstrong, Local Democracy Reporter.

Sheffield City Council’s charity trustee subcommittee decided that the scheme, which would replace much of the current multi-use games area with tennis courts, partly free and partly paid-for activities, should go forward to the next stage of a legal process.

The park, like many in the city, is the property of a charity trust, of which the council is the sole trustee. By law, the proposal has to be advertised in the press to allow people to make comments and objections, which will then be considered by the sub-committee.

The proposal also requires planning permission.

The company running the activity hub and the park tennis courts would be given a 25year lease of the space. The new facilities would include three new tennis courts, a resurfaced, redesigned and free-to-use multiuse games area (MUGA), a refreshment area and toilets.

New activities on offer in the paid-for area may include ‘padel’ tennis – a simplified form of the game – and mini golf. The plan has been put together with support and funding from the Lawn Tennis Association, who want to widen access to tennis coaching, and Sport England.

Sheffield charity receives a £9k boost

Leading specialist centre for children with cerebral palsy and motor disorders, Paces, has received a £9.1k donation from Switalskis, to support its work with children, adults and families in the region.

The donation by Switalskis will be used to provide Paces’ community with additional conductive education equipment. The equipment will support them in developing life-changing skills such as walking, sitting, standing, communication, eating and gaining greater independence.

Says David Hall, corporate partnership manager at Paces, “Switalskis has supported Paces for many years and we are constantly blown away by their generosity and their commitment to changing the lives of the children and adults who access Paces. Without teams like theirs we would not be able to continue to grow, reach more families and ultimately impact even more children and adults for the better, changing lives every single day. A huge thank you to the whole team at Switalskis, their support, hard work and generosity is incredible!”

Switalskis works closely with Paces professionally and two of its directors, including Suzanne Munroe, head of the clinical negligence department, have served as trustees for the charity.

Says Suzanne Munroe, “We have a deep connection with the remarkable work Paces carries out and the families the charity assists. Paces provides a safe and enjoyable environment where visitors can form lifelong friendships, and we have witnessed first-hand the profound difference the Paces

WHIT SING

team makes in the lives of families. We are thrilled to contribute to the important work the charity does across the region, providing comprehensive support that transforms the lives of families, children, and adults living with neurological conditions."

hub plan gets a step closer

The Friends of Hillsborough Park have been spearheading a long-running campaign against the scheme, which would also see improvements to tennis courts in eight city parks. Andy Chaplin from the Friends group presented a 1,200-signature petition opposing the plan.

He said: “The big, open-plan MUGA is a popular amenity in the park.”

Mr Chaplin criticised a council consultation document graphic that he said did not show the real size of the new MUGA and pictured the current one with “a very greyed-out image”.

He repeated concerns about the future of Sheffield Cycling 4 All, a charity that uses the MUGA during its popular trike-riding sessions for adults who can’t ride a two-wheel bike due to disability or a health condition.

Coun Fran Belbin said that the Friends had invited her to visit the park: “It was unfortunate that the Arctic Monkeys were setting up, which did indicate some of the limitations for local people of using the park at the moment. I did get a good understanding of the way it can get to feel that the decisions are taken away from people.”

The Friends’ petition says that the group believes the tennis courts are partly being moved to make life easier for the Tramlines music festival to bring in equipment. Their objections also include “commercialisation of a public park, with little regard for those people in Hillsborough community who currently use the MUGA for free”.

Hillsborough ward councillor Henry Nottage said: “Free-to-use sports facilities in parks are a very essential requirement at the best of times and the cost-of-living crisis has certainly deepened this need. Without a crystal ball it’s very hard to say whether usage of the area would be lowered or increased by it being smaller but arguably of better quality.

“I’ve also had people contact me in support, particularly people who use the pump track who I see regularly because I have a bike shop in the area. Two things I am being told, particularly by parents of young children who use that part of the park, is that a toilet in that area and refreshments and somewhere to sit down would be good.

“The other element is that there have been security incidents that would be slightly addressed by the cameras that would be going in as part of the proposal.”

He said he was against “unbridled” commercialisation of public space but the proposal could help to boost the local economy, creating jobs.

“Unfortunately I can’t sit here and say everyone I have spoken to in the ward is supportive or everyone is dismissive of this, it’s a very mixed tapestry,” said Coun Nottage.

“But Cycling 4 All have been using that area for a long time. The initial proposals weren’t really workable from their end.

More consultation

“I’m very pleased to see there has been some movement from the proposals in terms of

the design element and if there is a way for us, to a greater or lesser extent, to have some cake and eat some cake, I would be supportive of that.”

Jo Pearce of Sheffield parks and countryside service said that councillors had deferred their decision in March, when Coun Dawn Dale had argued that more consultation was needed with young people.

She said that consultation has now taken place with three local primary schools and Forge Valley secondary, as well as with young park users on the site. She said council staff had been inspired to hear how much young people value the park, adding that around 80 per cent of them support the new scheme.

Ms Pearce said that discussions are ongoing with Cycling 4 All and good progress is being made. She said that the group are concerned about whether they get in the way of young people wanting to use the MUGA. A possible solution suggested by a young person in the consultation is for the group to use the ‘learn to ride’ track which runs alongside the ‘all wheels’ cycling track. The MUGA design is also being tweaked to ensure Cycling 4 All riders can easily access that area.

Ms Pearce said staff are concerned that the decision is not deferred again because it could put £150,000 of Sport England funding in jeopardy as deadlines are tight. She said £25,000 funding has already been lost by delays.

It’s that time of year when it was traditional for communities to come together, all dressed in their Sunday best, for the Whit Sing, a huge event in the local calendar. Younger readers may not be familiar with Whitsuntide, which instead of moving around like Easter, is now fixed at the end of May and known as the Spring Bank holiday.

In the 1920s for example, people from Bolsterstone walked down the hill to join Deepcar folk, singing hymns like the still very popular ‘Hail Smiling Morn’. Together they would parade along the main road to Stocksbridge accompanied by their families having a break from work in mills and factories, until all the churches had joined together, each with their own banner. Hundreds of people, many in new clothes, were accompanied by several brass bands. They carried on up Hole House Lane and Victoria Road to ‘Whitsuntide Field’ at Bracken Moor for lots of singing, and then returned to church halls for refreshments and games. The holiday also included Whit Walks and fairs.

The photo shows girls in their new white clothes in a procession from Deepcar in 1906.

In Stocksbridge and Deepcar, many of the Sunday Schools joined together into unions and councils which managed the events. In the Valley Museum, we have a big collection of many of the Whitsuntide programmes, dating from the 1880s through to the 1970s, which would be an excellent resource for anyone wanting to research the music. The collection also includes a range of material about the Deepcar St John’s Male Voice Choir – their outings, events and dinners.

Come into the Valley Museum in Stocksbridge Town Hall on Manchester Road if you want to have a closer look at this collection - it is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 12.30 and 1 to 3.30pm. Do come in and share any stories you have. There are lots of interesting things on display in the Museum, and the volunteers from Stocksbridge and District History Society will be happy to show you round and answer your questions.

chaRity match RetuRnS

Chapeltown’s charity match returns for a second consecutive year

Following the success of last year’s match between the Legends and the current squad from Chapeltown RBL, the two teams will go head-tohead once again.

The first charity match was first thought of last year when one of their players was diagnosed with cancer and with the help of what the organisers can only describe as ‘our brilliant NHS.’ As the player underwent treatment and af-

ter a short stay in the hospital, he was back playing for Chapeltown and played his part in which was a cup-winning season.

From this the club decided to organise a charity match between themselves in the hope to raise as much money as they could for Cancer Research UK and were blown away by the response they had, raising around £2,000 for charity.

And following this amazing turnout not, only in the fundraising aspect but also in the amount who attended the

match, the club and players all agreed to make this happen again for a second consecutive year.

One of the organisers said in a promotional poster, “The players have all recovered from last year’s match and they are raring to go once again.”

The match will be played Saturday the 24 th of June at St. Georges Park, Thorncliffe, S35 3HY. Kicking off at 3 pm followed by their presentation evening and race night starting at 6 pm with all the

proceedings also going to the Cancer Research charity.

So, far they have raised £445 only £55 away from their desired target of £500 from this year’s event. If you wish to donate please go to their Just Giving page ( ChapeltownRBL FC is fundraising for Cancer Research UK (justgiving. com) ).

Or if you prefer, go down to St. Georges Park and cheer on the lads as they battle it out for Chapeltown bragging rights later on in the club.

TIGERS SCRAPE INTO FINAL

SHEFFIELD boss Simon Stead admitted his nerves were shot after seeing his side scrape through to the Sports Insure Premiership Knockout Cup Final on Monday.

The Tru Plant Tigers headed into their decider at Wolverhampton with an 18 point lead - but they progressed through by just four points in the end after losing the second leg 52-38.

Sheffield had to do it with six riders though with David Bellego ruled out of the clash having crashed on the continent over the weekend.

It turned out to be a night of high entertainment and tension in the West Midlands.

And while he would’ve preferred for his riders to have got the job done prior to the penultimate race of the tie, Stead was just pleased to see his side make it through to their second successive topflight cup final.

“Ultimately, we got the job done,” Stead said.

“We came here knowing we needed to get to 37 points and, okay, by hook or by crook, that’s what we did.

“With Wolverhampton, we knew we were in for a tough test; they’re a very, very good team with a good balance and this is an incredibly tough place to come to.

“There were some really good performances and lads who came up with big rides at just the right time and that got us out of trouble.

“For a neutral fan then I’m sure it was a great meeting - but my nerves were shot!”

Attentions turn back to league action this Thursday (June 22, 7.30) when they go head-to-head with Leicester at Owlerton.

SHEFFIELD 38: Tobiasz Musielak 10, Jack Holder 9+1, Kyle Howarth 8+1, Lewis Kerr 5, Adam Ellis 5, Dan Gilkes 1+1, David Bellego R/R. Sheffield win 92-88 on aggregate.

LocalSport Busy week for runners

A busy week of running for Penistone Footpath runners kicked off with the fifth Trunce of the summer series. George Parr had a strong run to win the race in 27-37. He was followed in by clubmate Richard Cottam who was second in 2739. Richard also claimed first in the men’s over40 category. Other podium age group finishers were Barbara Haigh (first over70 lady), Lesley Parker (second over40 lady) and Becky Timms (third over40 lady).

The Joe Percy invitation race took place after a two year break and Penistone were invited to enter, one of the few South Yorkshire teams to get an invite to a predominantly West Yorkshire team event run by Holm firth Harriers. The team competi tion counts the first ten finishers for each club so strength in depth is key. The ladies team just missed out on a podium place finishing in fourth place. First back for the ladies team was Rachael Mayston in an impres sive 45-16 on an undulating course. The men were on course for third place but unfortunately missed out due to one of the team having to withdraw mid race with a calf inju ry. They only had ten runners in the race so with just nine finishers they were ineligible for the overall team competition. There were plenty of strong runs in the team with inform Andrew Heppenstall first back in a time of 35-58.

There was a large turnout of Penistone runners at the Oughtibridge Chase trail race which also acted as a club championship race. The race was won by former Penistone runner Gareth Cooke in a time of 21-57. First lady back for Penistone was Becky Timms in a time of 30-16, first man back in ninth place overall was Lee Storey in 24-43. There were first place age category wins for Lisa Hinchliffe (over50 ladies), Barbara Haigh (over70 ladies), Martyn Goodwin (over60 men), Bill Phillips (over70 men) and Ray Brown (over80 men). Flynn Rogers claimed third place in the junior

Penistone runners (Oughtibridge Chase)

The Penistone 10K road race was held on Sunday. After thunder and lightning overnight, the race was held on a warm, sultry day which provided a real test for the runners on the undulating course. The race this year was sponsored by Barratt/ Wilson Homes and one of their employees, Scott Hinchcliffe easily won the race, missing out on his own course record by just 5 seconds. His Barnsley AC team mate, Gary Briscoe, was second with Hallamshire Harriers Jonah Cooper third. The Ladies race was easily won by Wakefield Harriers Julie Briscoe. Andrew Heppenstall was first Penistone runner home in 6th place, which was good enough to finish third over40 man. Matt Robinson was first over55 man, finishing in tenth place overall. Suzanne McGill

was first Penistone lady home and also won the first over45 lady age category. Barbara Haigh was first over70 lady. Penistone triumphed in both the men’s and ladies team race. George Parr, Alex Harris and Oliver Found counted for the men’s team and Suzanne McGill, Rhianna Banford and Helen Milnes made up the Penistone ladies team. On the parkrun scene there were first places for Hugh Mackie at the Hoblingwell parkrun and Flynn Rogers at Hillsborough junior parkrun.
