las buitreras fishin g lodge
After this season I think it’s clearer than ever before. If possible, use single-hand rods and keep wading to a minimum. The fish are there, but splashing a long twohand line on the surface nearly guarantees they will not bite. This is as technical as it gets, but at the same time quite easy! The cast does not need to be so long, only quiet and controlled. Keep contact with the fly and move the fly, wade as little as possible and it will happen! We have been very spoiled using only certain sections of our available water. Tomas Ögren and I spent a week fishing new areas from both sides of the river with great success. There’s still a lot of water to be discovered under varying conditions. How many world class stretches of fishing can say that? The season was exciting with all the big fish and as always the lodge functioned perfectly under the supervision of camp manager Claudio Martin.

in length and has its origin in the Southern Andes with two pristine and very beautiful streams, the Penitente and the Ruebens. Winding its way through the wild Patagonian landscape it emerges into the surprisingly mountainous area that encompasses the unique Las Buitreras beats, some 40kms from the river mouth. The flood plain that lies between these outcrops teems with birdlife, alongside large numbers of rheas, silver foxes, horses, hares, flamingos and guanacos. A trip to Rio Gallegos River offers the adventurous angler the opportunity to pit his skills against the explosive sea running trouts of Patagonia. These fish can reach sizes of 25lbs and over and will reward the angler with arm wrenching takes and blistering runs, interspersed with regular acrobatic displays. Loop’s Las Buitreras lodge is home to the most prolific beats on the Rio Gallegos, consisting of over 40kms of both sides private water comprising over 50 named pools. The fishing is exciting and varied with pools ranging from deep stony runs to cut banks and streamy shingle flats. Relatively shallow, the river makes for easy wading, obviating the need for fast sinking lines and creating an exciting and challenging fishing environment. It is this variety in combination with the visually inspiring mountainous outcrops that makes this part of the Rio Gallegos quite simply one of the most spectacular stretches of fly fishing water in Patagonia. Sometimes explosive, always challenging, fishing for sea trout requires a level of skill, stealth and understanding that can frustrate

The lake is nothing else than a biological sensation and contains millions upon millions of fresh water shrimp (krill, scuds). The fish grow to huge sizes eating only the protein-enriched shrimps all year around. This is simply the most Omega-3 fat fish you have ever seen. Yes, it’s possible to eat and taste during the stay. We have also seen that the rainbows are making their way into the small stream (the only stream in the lake) to spawn nearly all months of the year, as long as the river has water. All we can gather is that the vast numbers of rainbows has created its own ecological system and its unending food source has pushed these fish to year-around-spawners , depending on water level in the small stream that feeds the lake by the Loop River camp. Arriving at Jurassic Lake you will quickly realize just how far removed you are from the real world, as the shear vastness of this secluded country is beyond belief. The large lake is roughly 20 km by 15km, situated approx. 1000m over sea level, and looks more like a saltwater body of water with its crystal clear blue water and channels, corals and shelves. Our first exploratory trip had us casting into this huge body of water with little to no expectations. After being broke off a half dozen times we quickly realized there was something strange going on here. These huge fish are much, much more then just abnormally large, as they are pound for pound one of the strongest fish we have ever seen. The blood curdling runs are only interrupted by jumps that often involve leaps far above your head. Do not put your hands anywhere near your reel handle, as you will surely risk loosing some skin or even break a finger.
from Las Buitreras and the flight back to Buenos Aires will be from Calafate which takes approximately 7 hrs from the camp. The drive is through the wildest stretches of Patagonia and offers many chances to see and take photos of all wild animals and beautiful nature, and with a bit of luck you might even see a wild puma. But be

You will require to book the internal flight from Buenos Aires domestic airport to Rio Gallegos city flying with Aerolineas Argentinas. (Please note that it takes approx 50min to transfer between the international and domestic airports in Buenos Aires.) The outbound flight departs on Saturday at 1520 hrs and depart Rio Gallegos airport at 1125 hrs. The flight time is normally 3 hours however occasionally the flight diverts over Ushuaia, the worlds most southern city, which takes an additional 2 hours. It is therefore strongly advised that your international flight is booked on Sunday, thereby allowing for any complications which might arise. Please check your flight schedule with Pia Mosso. We recommend you arrive in Buenos Aires at Friday and if the international home flight is later than 20.30 Saturday evening it is possible to make the international home flight same day. On arrival at Rio Gallegos you will be met by Las Buitreras staff and transported by 4x4 or mini bus to the lodge. The journey takes approximately 50 minutes.
The price of your hotel room is not included in the travel service package however we will book you into our preferred hotel, Hotel NH Florida on San Martin Av, unless you inform us otherwise. Be careful of personal possessions particularly expensive watches and cameras and remain alert to your surroundings. Good restaurant – Las Lilas, book table at reception!

Pack light, warm and windproof clothing. Most of the fishing occurs in the Argentine summer, but at parallel 53 south, the days can be chilly, particularly when the wind blows! Those visiting us in the late season can count on cold mornings and evenings. Windbloc and Windstopper fleece products are very good and when combined with breathable waders and jacket, offer superior protection that will keep you warm and comfortable all day. Prepare to dress in layers. The sun is intense because the ozone layer is thin in this part of the world and you may encounter very warm weather as well. Tropical flats clothing in neutral colors can be worn to advantage under warmer outer layers. Remember your sunscreen and polarized sunglasses!
Argentina is a wonderful country and we are often asked for additional programmes to enhance our guests’experience. Aside of the Jurassic Lake add on to Buitreras program, we have also the following recommendations: Everyone that has visited Las Buitreras knows that our former Lodge Manager Martina McNamara is one of the people that has made Buitreras the magic place it is. Martina is also a teacher in the University for Wild Life Management and we know that nobody will take care of you better than Martina. Programs can be customized to guests, why not non fishing guests in Buitreras, specifications and for example could include: Monte Leon National Park, Los Glacieres National Park, Stag River and more. around 10 lb, with the biggest landed so far at 120cm long. We have seen, and lost, even bigger ones. Is there any other place like Loop Jurassic River Camp in the world? We don´ t think so! We don’t count fish at Jurassic Lake, as it is not important, but let us at least say there is enough fish to keep you busy the whole day. For those who love a real challenge there is some great shallow water sight fishing to be had along the shorelines. It is not uncommon to see pods of giant fish cruising the edges in search of food that tries to escape. It is also fun to take a smaller rod up the creek, for some dry fly fishing, mainly in Nov-mid Jan.

Bring along some scud of each. patterns for sight fishing and an assortment of dry flies and nymphs as well. We have also, when weather permits, used 9’ # 5 rods with floating lines, dries and nymphs with big success. Real fun, not easy to land them though. Whatever fly or line used – the key is to fish the fly slow, real slow, since these fish are not used to chase the food. Their eating behavior is more like swimming with mouth open zipping in the food. are the tools of choice. Loop Opti Coast rod with hi-dense core (handles For the lake a the wind better) Loop Multi lines is a safe setup. A high quality reel with a good drag system is highly recommended and your reels should have at least 100 yards of backing on them. We recommend, of course, Evotec G4, Multi or Opti Runner reels. If you like the sound of screaming reels Loop Classic is a good choice. All these reels will handle the tough sand winds and water since they are properly sealed and have hi-quality bearings and shafts. Floating, intermediate and sinking

This is the spawning season and normally the river has sufficient water and is virtually full of fish with a mix of colored fish and fresh silver from the lake. There is huge traffic in the bay outside the camp; here also is a mix of colored fish and fresh torpedoes. This period it is possible to catch more wild and bigger rainbows than anywhere else on the planet. 50 fish in a day is normal with records well above 50 fish per day. If you think it is too many you just walk 100 meters to next bay where you can sight fish for the odd big bright specimens, this goes for the whole lake, and maybe catch 5-10 fish in a good day. This period is colder with the bay full of fish yet again. During this period they are fatter and most are chrome trains that will empty your reel – fast! This period can be a bit cold but fantastic! This is high summer and after 4 seasons we can now see the pattern with fish mainly cruising around out in the lake. If the wind presses colder water to the bay there can be some fantastic evening and mornings. This period is definitely slower compared to Jurassic River normal standards, but if compared with other wild rainbow fisheries it is still hard Full Full week Full week to beat. week

There are 5 double rooms, 2 single rooms and a new annex with indoor barbeque and an extra room with 3 beds. In addition to the structural renovation, the entire heating, water, electrical and gas systems have been replaced. There is a wine cellar with a fantastic selection from the Mendoza and San Juan regions. It is also stocked with Cerveza Isenbeck, an outstanding local beer. Outside, there is a huge veranda, a spacious courtyard that is protected from the wind, and a large, fixed stone grill and terrace for barbeques. House wine and beer is included in the lodge rate but we do keep a wide selection of local wines not often available elsewhere and guests are welcome to purchase these at a very reasonable rate. No smoking inside the lodge.
A diesel generator supplies the electricity in Buitreras and the power is 220 volt. The receptacles will accept common European plugs. The generator normally runs between 06.30 and 23.30. We have auxiliary battery power and there are 12-volt outlets in your rooms with lights that will function in the absence of generator power. Additionally, there are gas lamps here in the living/dining area and also upstairs in the hallway. These lamps can be used to advantage during late-night festivities! Water is supplied from a windmill at the top of the hill and though there are no limits for guests, we ask that they use it conscientiously. There are three very large thermo tanks supplying hot water and it is normally always available. There is a new telephone with Internet access in the lodge. During our season, continental Europe and Scandinavia are +4 hours and Great Britain is +3 hours. The USA is anywhere between -2 and -5 hours. NB: Telephone works when generator is on only. Hours for this and new number will be available before season.

Small nymphs are also used regularly when the trout become very selective. Doubles are fine, but please leave the trebles at home. Most of the fishing requires you to strip the fly. When the water is stirred up by the wind or colored from rain, tubes and larger flies work very well. In turbid water conditions, we like bulky flies that push the water. Tubes tied in the Temple Dog style on plastic and/or brass in all colors and sizes are good to have along. There are a few pools where seatrout can be taken by simply swinging the fly as one would for Atlantic Salmon, but generally speaking, these fish don’t favor the same type of lies as salmon do. The lodge I can only describe as fabulous along with the food they ser ved there. The accommodation was first class bearing in mind we were in the middle of nowhere. Then there was the fishing. What can one say after being lucky enough to catch not one fish of a lifetime but two. I nev er thought for a moment that I wou ld actually catch a 19 and 21 lb sea trou t. There was so much to love about the fishing not just the fish themselves but the scenery and wildlife amongst which you fished for these magnificent creatures . Then lastly there were the Guides .These men were absolutely fantastic and ably led by Claudio. Their enthusiasm and genuine love of fishing was infectious, and would do everything within their power to help make this a truly unique experience. I believe that more people should experience this adventure to a truly wild and windswept part of Argentina. Mike Humphries
