LIAR NEW SERIES

WHO KILLED ANDREW EARLHAM ?

MON 2 MAR, 9 PM, ITV Series one of the hit drama charted the s tory of teacher Laura Nielson ( Joanne Froggatt) who was sexually as saulted b y the father of one of her pupils –the charming Andrew Earlham (Ioan Gruffudd). As the series ended with Andrew lying dead on the K ent marshes, the question on e veryone’s lips w as, “Who killed him ?” Season tw o deals with the ans wer to tha t v ery ques tion...

JOANNE F ROGGATT:

‘People w ere c ompletely gripped b y it’

Joanne Froggatt, 39 and Katherine Kelly, 40, talk series two of Liar – here after a VERY long wait…

ow did y ou feel about the reaction to the firs t series? JOANNE: A lot of people came up to me in the street when it was shown. It was probably one of the biggest reactions to anything I’ve done, emotionally. People were just amazing. Everyone was talking about it. The general reaction was that people were completely gripped by it, which is the best reaction you can hope for. I was very pleased with that. You’ve described Laura as one of the most challenging characters you have ever played… JOANNE: Definitely – because of the subject matter of sexual assault and everything that surrounds it; the research, and H

looking into ho w few of these rape cases e ven go to c ourt. How are the themes of Liar further e xplored in this series? JOANNE: Lies are very much the theme of the show. We shift from the question of who was the ‘liar’ regarding the sexual assault, to who is lying about Andrew’s murder. The finger is pointed at many characters, including mine. We also have a fantastic new detective character called DI Renton [Katherine Kelly]. She is investigating the murder and is a great antagonist for Laura. We had some great scenes together. I love working with Katherine. Katherine, tell us about your character, DI Karen Renton… KATHERINE: Karen is a very powerful character with a

Jo pr omises series tw o is “ exciting” Katherine play s the new c op particular energy. When she is in the room, y ou kno w about it. It ’s a bold choic e when this is such a delicate case. She is very frank, with a certain sense of humour she’s developed out of necessity, as she deals with the worst side of human nature on a daily basis. What does Karen think about Laura [Joanne’s character]? KATHERINE: Laura is obviously a prime suspect for the murder of Andrew Earlham. It’s just not personal for Karen. What she feels about Laura is irrelevant. Karen won’t let her emotions become involved in this. It’s not necessary for her to show empathy for Laura. She is there to deal with the facts. How does Laura deal with her? JOANNE: DI Renton is Laura’s nemesis. It’s never really felt like the police have been on Laura’s side, and they are even less so in the new series. It’s fantastic to play scenes with Laura against another strong woman. We really enjoyed working together. Had you two worked together before? KATHERINE: We pla yed sis ters in Life On Mars, but not in the same episode. She was the young Sam Tyler’s mother and I was his aunt. But we’d never met each other before this job. What makes Liar so special? JOANNE: Series two is a riproaring thriller, which is amazing. There is not much like this on British TV. It’s exciting, it’s going to surprise people and make them jump, and produce all sorts of emotions. KATHERINE: Harry and Jack [Williams, the creators and writers] are brilliant storytellers. For me, that’s why their shows are so successful. And you also starred in the series Cheat, which they wrote… KATHERINE: Not long after we wrapped on Cheat, they said they were making a second series of Liar. They had a new character in mind, and they asked if I’d come to the office to talk about the role. So I was involved very early on in this character, which was great.

5 MINUTES WITH ...

Dawn French, 62, on playing the lead role in ITV’s new drama and being on-screen BFFs with ex-Corrie actress Julie Hesmondhalgh…

hat sort of person is your character, Maggie? DAWN: She’s got a high opinion of herself – let’s put it tha t w ay. But I think she’s the kind of person who is lik e that because she actually has a really lo w opinion of herself. She feels lik e she doesn’t ma tter v ery much. So , when she is ask ed if she w ould lik e t o do an int erview for local radio, she c ouldn’t think of an ything better. It ticks all the boxes. And she’s good-hearted, that’s a key thing. Being a gossip doesn’t make you a dreadful person. We’re all gossipers. It’s how you handle the gossip and how you handle the aftermath. Have you met many Maggies in your time? I think we’re all a bit Maggie, to be honest. Human beings have told stories since the beginning of time. But the danger with the elaboration of stories is the damage y ou can cause b y W

doing that. We live in a society where reputation is everything - and Maggie carelessly throws people’s reputations down the toilet, because she’s had a few too man y gins and because she’s been fla ttered. You and Julie Hesmondhalgh [who pla ys Maggie’s bes t friend Jill] feel lik e a cas ting ma tch made in hea ven. That’s the good thing about working in TV. You’ve admired somebody from afar, then you need to find a best friend for a part and you think, “Oh God, wouldn’t it be great if it was her?” I was really chuffed when she said yes. Describe the show to us… I’m really happy with The Trouble With Maggie Cole . It feels unique. T he tone is quite particular. It’s drama, it’s comedy, but it’s got a big, big pulsing heart at the centre of it, with true friendships and proper relationships.

Zombieland: Double Tap

AVAILABLE ON DVD & BLU-RAY OUT NOW

This is a worthy successor to the hugely

popular and very fun Zombieland , which was released TEN years ago (eek!). After

previously fending off a load of zombies, survivors Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg),

Wichita (Emma Stone), Little Rock (Abigail Breslin), and Tallahassee (Woody

Harrelson) are back and fighting, well, more zombies! Although, this time, the zombies

have evolved, and there are new threats – including hippies! As enjoyable as ever.

Terminator: Dark Fate

AVAILABLE ON DVD & BLU RAY OUT 2 MARCH

Following on from the events of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Sarah

Connor joins a cyborg soldier to protect a young woman from future assassins.

With the return of machine-gun-toting Linda Hamilton (Connor), and original

Can You Hear Me? A Paramedic’s

Encounters With Life And Death

(JAKE JONES) Jake has worked in the UK ambulance service for ten years. Every day, he deals with difficult and challenging scenarios – the hoarder who won’t move his collection to let his ailing father leave the house, the blood-soaked man who tries to escape from the ambulance, a young man who’s stopped breathing in a supermarket toilet… This moving memoir is an honest examination of an exceptionally tough job. A must read.

BTS Map of the Soul: 7 As South Korean K-Pop is now part of the mainstream music scene, it’s hard to ignore this new offering from boyband giants BTS. With 7 members – RM, SUGA, Jin, J-hope, Jung-kook, V and Jimin – this album is made up of extremely catchy tunes and feel-good beats, despite the language barrier. And with a sell-out world tour on the horizon too, you’d be silly not to give this new record a go! Out now.

THE CAST

Will Ferrell, Miranda

Otto, Julia Louis-Dreyfus

THE STORY

A remake of the

2014 Swedish film Force Majeure .

Careworn couple Billie (Louis

Dreyfus) and Pete (Ferrell) find

themselves on a slippery slope –

both literally and figuratively – when

an approaching avalanche forces

them to reevaluate their lives.

THE VERDICT Both leads are

on top form in this light-hearted offering. There’s plenty of charm to carry the film along, as well as the odd chuckle, but there was potential for more bite if only they could have dug a little deeper.

THE CAST Noémie Merlant, Adèle Haenel, Luàna Bajrami THE STORY A painter is commissioned to produce a wedding portrait of a young bride-to-be, but must paint it without her sitter knowing. THE VERDICT Everything about Céline Sciamma’s film is painfully gorgeous. A beautiful palette, a searing romance that simmers before it storms, subtle camera work framing each shot like a painting – this compelling love story stuck in our minds long after the heartbreaking final scene. A classy, enigmatic and profound must-see. CERT 15, 122 MINS, OPENS 28 FEB Portrait Of A Lady On Fire WORDS: CAITLIN BUTLER, CAROLINE KNELL, AMY ROWLAND, ALYS WEBB PHOTOS: SHUTTERSTOCK
