Farewell To A Legend

MOVIE legend Kirk Douglas died at the age of 103 on February 5. “To the world, he was a legend, an actor from the golden age of movies who lived well into his golden years, a humanitarian whose commitment to jusce and the causes he believed in set a standard of us all to aspire to... but to me and my brothers, Joel and Peter, he was simply dad, to Catherine, a wonderful father-in-law, to his grandchildren and great grandchildren, their loving grandfather, and to his wife Anne, a wonderful husband,” wrote son Michael Douglas in a statement. “Kirk’s life was well lived, and he leaves a legacy in film that will endure for generaons to come, and a history as a renowned philanthropist who worked to aid the public and bring peace to the planet. Let me end with the words I told him on his last birthday and which will always remain true. Dad – I love you so much and I am so proud to be your son.” Born ‘Issur Danielovitch’ in New York to Jewish Russian parents who arrived in America in 1912, Kirk started his acng career on the Broadway stage in 1940 before he enlisted in the US Navy. Following service in World War II, he returned to the theatre before finding fame on the big screen. He was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar in 1959 for his role in Champion and went on to become one of the most revered and beloved Hollywood icons of the 1960s and 1970s, appearing in over 70 movies and picking up a number of accolades, including the Presidenal Medal of Freedom in 1981, France’s top award, the Chevalier of the Legion of Honour, and an honourary Oscar in 1995. He also landed Oscar nods in 1953 for The Bad And The Beautiful and in 1957 for his acclaimed performance as arst Vincent Van Gogh in the biopic Lust For Life. Kirk survived a helicopter crash in 1991 and a stroke in 1996. He chronicled his life in the 1988 autobiography, The Ragman’s Son. Hollywood Chamber of Commerce officials paid their respects to the legend by placing flowers on Kirk’s Walk of Fame star. He unveiled the plaque almost exactly 60 years ago on February 8, 1960.

Katy Perry Faces Backlash

KATY PERRY is facing backlash aer being appointed an ambassador for the Brish Asian Trust. Prince Charles, who met the pop star at a trust meeng in Mumbai, India in November, announced her new role, through which she’ll help the organisaon in its fight against child trafficking and slavery. However, some Brish Asians are unhappy about the appointment, complaining that she is acng as a ‘white saviour’ and is neither Brish nor Asian.

Nicki Minaj Talks Abuse

NICKI MINAJ accused her ex-boyfriend Meek Mill of physical abuse during a nasty Twier feud recently. The latest war of words began when Meek liked an Instagram post which poked fun at Minaj’s husband Kenneth Pey’s dress sense, and the Anaconda star responded by accusing her ex, whom she dated between 2015 and 2017, of beang women. “N**ga been tweeng bout my man for a year now. Talking bout he went to my page to see him but he was blocked (sic). My n**ga, move on,” she wrote on Twier. “You beat your own sister and taped it. Spit on her & taped it. Kicked me in front your mother and sent her to the hospital. Sucking drake d**k made u feel tough again. Move on.” She offered no evidence to support her claims and Meek was quick to respond, reminding his fellow rapper that her brother Jelani had been ordered to serve 25 years to life behind bars following a recent child rape convicon.

Davis’ Successful Drama

VIOLA DAVIS’ new drama First Ladies, in which the Oscar-winner portrays Michelle Obama, has been picked up for a full series. Bosses at Showme announced the news, revealing Eleanor Roosevelt and Bey Ford – the spouses of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and President Gerald Ford – will also feature in season one. Showme president Jana Winograde says, “Throughout our history, presidents’ spouses have wielded remarkable influence, not only on the naon’s leaders but on the country itself. First Ladies fits perfectly within the Showme wheelhouse of drama and polics, revealing how much personal relaonships impact both domesc and global events.” She added, “Having Viola Davis play Michelle Obama is a dream come true, and we couldn’t be luckier to have her extraordinary talent to help launch this series.” Davis shared her delight about the role last year, calling Obama ‘awesome in every way’, adding, “She’s smart. She’s confident. She’s arculate. She believes in sisterhood.” But while she’s excited about the project, she’s also a ‘lile scared’. “You could either fail really big or succeed really big, and I feel this is my succeed very big or fail very big moment,” she told Entertainment Tonight.

Dawson’s ‘Scary’ Romance

ROSARIO DAWSON finds dang New Jersey Senator Cory Booker ‘scary’ because she’s such a ‘wild person’. The actress, who went public with her relaonship with Booker last year, opened up about the pressures of dang the polician in an interview. “I could be asked to serve my country, and that’s scary to me because I’m a wild person,” she said, before insisng it’s not all serious in their relaonship. “We are excited about what we can create together… I feel a lot of life ahead of us. It’s been beauful feeling nurtured and taken care of. I’ve never been this close to someone. We make sure we connect. That’s something I’ve taken for granted in the past.” Dawson added, “Every morning that we don’t wake up together, he sends me a song, which means every morning he holds our relaonship in his mind and heart for a few minutes before he goes off into his big day.” The interview was conducted before Booker suspended his 2020 presidenal campaign recently. At the me, the Sin Cityy star gushed over her ‘remarkable’ man on social media. “Cory, you connue to inspire me every day,” she wrote. “Thank you. I see you. I love you.”

Celebs Support Doherty

SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR, Alyssa Milano, and Tori Spelling are among the stars who have sent love and support to Shannen Doherty following her cancer diagnosis. The Beverly Hills, 90210 actress went public with the news that she has stage four cancer during an interview on US TV show Good Morning America recently. Following the interview, Doherty shared an image on her Instagram page which saw Charlie Brown saying to Snoopy, “We only live once, Snoopy,” and Snoopy replying, “Wrong! We only die once. We live every day.” In response, Gellar wrote, “Beaufully said, my beauful friend. I get to live my life with you, that makes me the lucky one.” Spelling also replied to the Charlie Brown image and noted, “Sending lots of love, support, and animal vibes to make you smile xoxo.” Kate Beckinsale commented with several red heart emojis, while Selma Blair wrote, “You are lighng up the path. You are loved.” Meanwhile, Alyssa Milano supported her former Charmed co-star with a post on her own Instagram page, sharing a picture of Doherty, 48, and wring in the capon, “Holding you ght in my heart, @theshando.” Rose McGowan, who also appeared alongside Milano and Doherty in Charmed, did the same.

Richie Won’t Be Keeping Up With The Kardashians

SOFIA RICHIE has ruled out making any more appearances on the next series of Keeping Up With The Kardashians because she wants to transion into acng. As the girlfriend of Kourtney Kardashian’s ex, Sco Disick, Richie made a brief appearance in the family’s E! reality show last season. However, in a chat with Entertainment Tonight in Los Angeles, she explained further cameos are unlikely. Asked why Richie replied, “Well, because I want to get into acng! I feel like, for a while, I kind of held back on things because I was afraid of failure, but 2020 is [the year of] no fear! I’m gonna be doing acng stuff really soon.” She added, “Great things are happening and I’m really excited about it.” The 21-year-old model made her debut on the family’s reality TV show in October when she joined Sco and Kourtney on vacaon with their three children. During the chat, Richie added that she’s going for acng roles that are ‘kind of similar’ to herself, and explained, “They’re easy for me to play, and I really, really enjoy it.”

HAILEY BIEBER has described her husband Jusn Bieber as ‘an incredible, amazing man’. In an interview the model opened up about her relaonship with the Canadian pop star, whom she married in September 2018. However, Hailey also noted that Jusn has changed a lot since they first briefly dated as teenagers. “I think I had grown up a lot, too. He was somebody I’d always cared about so deeply and loved very deeply. Obviously, it took work and geng past things between the two of us, but it was all very worth it,” she says, adding, “He’s an incredible, amazing man and such a good partner to go through life with. There is no one else I would have ever wanted to spend my life with except him. So, I’m lucky.” Yet, not everything has been smooth for the pair since they ed the knot. Jusn recently revealed that he’s been suffered from Lyme disease and mono, and Hailey found it difficult seeing her husband go through such a difficult me with his health.

Kylie Jenner Isn’t ‘Mom’ To Stormi

KYLIE JENNER was less-than-impressed when her twoyear-old daughter Stormi Webster recently began calling her ‘Kylie’ instead of ‘mommy’. The billionaire make-up mogul took to Instagram to share an adorable clip of the toddler running around her mom’s legs. However, smiling at the camera, Stormi smiled as she repeatedly said, “Hi, Kylie!” “That’s not my name, my name’s Mommy!” Kylie declared as her daughter connued to call her ‘Kylie’. But it seemed Stormi soon learned her lesson, as she posed with Kylie in a second video where she giggled and then asked, “Mommy?” The clip prompted a flood of responses from fans, with one joking, “Stormi when she realised her mom is Kylie Jenner.” Others remarked on how ‘adorable’ the youngster was. The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star recently opened up about raising her lile girl with ex Travis Sco, who she split with in October aer more than two years of dang. “We have such a great relaonship,” Kylie insisted of the Astroworld rapper. “We’re like best friends. We both love Stormi and want what’s best for her. We stay connected and co-ordinated.”

Camila Cabello’s Social Media Break

SINGING sensaon Camila Cabello took a break from social media because she was feeling ‘overwhelmed’. The Havana singer returned to Instagram recently to post her first selfie in a while, and explained to fans that she had needed to step away from the site to clear her head. “Hello!!!! usually when I take these breaks from social media, it’s ’cause I need some space or me away from it – I think it’s healthy to know when you need me for yourself – that’s been my biggest thing I’ve worked on this year so far is to listen to my intuion and what my mind and body need!!!!” she wrote. “When I feel overwhelmed or oversmulated I’m like.... okay I need to give myself a lile room to

slow down. But I miss and love you guys!!!!” Cabello added that the snap, which showed her with a 1920s style bob haircut and winged eyeliner, was taken on the set of a music video that’s going to be released shortly. “I’m in London right now working on Cinderella and I’m having the me of my life TBH [to be honest] here’s a picture behind the scenes of a music video that’s coming out very very soon... how are you guys doing?! How’s life!! How are your hearts! I’ll read some of the comments and reply,” she concluded. The 22-year-old is starring as fairy tale character Cinderella in a new version of the classic story, which was wrien by Pitch Perfect’s Kay Cannon. It also stars Billy Porter, Idina Menzel and Pierce Brosnan.

Kutcher Credits TV ‘Family’ For Divorce Support

ASHTON KUTCHER remains grateful to his ‘family’ on the set of Two And A Half Men for helping him through his divorce from ex-wife Demi Moore. The Hollywood couple split in 2011, shortly aer Kutcher took over Charlie Sheen’s leading role on the hot sitcom. But during an interview for the WTF With Marc Maron podcast, Kutcher explained that working on the show ulmately pulled him through the tough me. “I had a really good me making it. I actually went through a divorce on that show which is a really hard thing to do,” he stated. “And having a family [on set] while going through that... I needed that.” He added, “Those people were all there for me and supported me while I was going through that, and it was phenomenal.” The actor went on to note that he was inially hesitant to take on the part of Walden Schmidt because he ‘had daughters at home’ and ‘knew things were a lile not great in his relaonship’ with Moore. “I wanted to work on that with Demi... I wanted to be home more. And I was like, let me think about it,” the 41-year-old added. Elsewhere in the conversaon, Kutcher insisted he now has a ‘great’ relaonship with Moore’s daughters — Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah Willis, whom she shares with ex Bruce Willis.

MARK RUFFALO has been tapped for a leading role in a new television spin-off of director Bong Joonho’s Oscar-winning film Parasite. The Avengers actor watched from the audience as the filmmaker picked up four trophies, including one for Best Picture, at the 92nd Academy Awards recently, and now he’s in line to star in a TV series adaptaon for HBO network, according to mulple reports. Sources says director Joon-Ho is teaming up with Adam McKay on the new five-to-six episode series, and Ruffalo has emerged as a frontrunner to star as one of the leads, although the exact details of the character he’ll be playing have yet to be revealed. The Parasite series is expected to begin filming in 2021.

#PEOPLE SPOTTED BY GABRIELLE OZYNSKI

DENCH GETS DRENCHED YASSS! Talented veteran actress Dame Judi Dench showed she doesn’t just have skills on the stage and the screen, but in the water too! On a recent vacation in Barbados she was spotted snorkelling with her daughter. Not bad for an 85year-old! Dench also took care of her grandson, Sammy, now 21, while her daughter Finty battled alcoholism. What a dame!

No Screen Time For American Idiot

GREEN DAY have abandoned plans for a movie version of their rock musical and album American Idiot. The band converted their hit 2004 record into a Broadway musical in 2010, which subsequently toured around the world, sparking talks it would be turned into a film. However, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has now said that the project has been ‘prey much scrapped’. Bizarrely, however, he also revealed that US President Donald Trump saw the musical’s opening night, but he is unsure whether they shook hands. Armstrong had previously told the Brish music website that HBO chiefs would fund the project. “We’ve got a green light from HBO, and the script is currently going through a couple of rewrites here and there, so I’m not sure when exactly we’re going to start shoong, but it’s definitely all systems go at the moment,” he said in 2016. Green Day’s new album, Father Of All Motherf**kers, is out now.

Brad: ‘I Do All My Own Speeches’

BRAD PITT denies hiring writers to script his acceptance speeches throughout the 2020 awards season. The Once Upon A Time In Hollywood actor capped off a great run by bagging the Oscar for Best Supporng Actor recently – his first acng win at the Academy Awards. Pi thanked his children and the movie’s director, Quenn Taranno, in his acceptance speech, and also mocked US President Donald Trump over his impeachment trial. But in a new interview, the star insisted he does not employ people to write jokes for him, despite impressing people with his wiy remarks. “Historically, I’ve always been really tentave about speeches, like, they make me nervous,” he said. “So, this – this round, I figured if we’re going to do this – like, put some, like, some real work into it and try to get comfortable, and this is the result of that.” Asked if he got professional help with his speeches, the 56-year-old explained, “No, I definitely write them. I have some funny friends. I have some very, very funny friends that helped me with some laughs, but, no, it’s, you know, it’s got to come from the heart.” The actor was also asked if he ever feels shy when speaking in public. “For me, it was just about geng cosy, you know, up in front of a mass of people. I know that sounds anthecal given the profession I’ve chosen, but it’s not necessarily my thing. So that’s probably what I’ll remember,” he added.

Drizzy In Love?

DRAKE sparked rumours he’s dang supermodel Imaan Hammam when he was spoed leaving her New York apartment. The God’s Plan star was in the Big Apple for the Nike showcase as part of New York Fashion Week and, following the presentaon, the 33-yearold was reportedly spoed with the 23-year-old beauty. According to reports the rumoured couple was seen kissing at the Flur Room in the early hours of the morning before heading back to Hammam’s apartment. Both stars were later spoed leaving the apartment, with Hammam exing first and the Hotline Bling star following shortly aerwards. Drake has been linked to Hammam in the past, with the singer oen seen liking her posts on Instagram. Neither star has responded to the relaonship reports.

THE long-awaited Friends special is reportedly moving forward, with the show’s original cast set to return. According to reports the hour-long special will help launch the upcoming streaming service HBO Max, which will also house the entire Friends library. A deal is apparently ready to be inked for the unscripted reunion special, with David Schwimmer, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry, Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston and Matt LeBlanc all expected to return. FASHIONISTA POOCH THE owner of a hairless dog has received death threats in the post for turning her rescue dog into an online fashionista. Holly, a six-year-old Chinese Crested dog, has come a long way since she was rescued four years ago, as the pooch has now launched her own clothing line. Yet owner Stacey Bowie, 55, claims that despite Holly’s 250 000-strong online following, who sees the pooch as an inspiration, Holly has been subjected to daily death threats and hate mail – comparing to her to a ‘plucked chicken’ and ‘a rat’. As anonymous mail began to arrive at Stacey’s home, police had to begin investigations and the pooch even has her own FBI agent looking into the perpetrators. “I’ve received post about how my dog is ugly but she’s an online superstar – she’s helped so many other dogs as we use all publicity she receives as an opportunity to help fundraise for dogs in need,” says Stacey, a dressmaker, from Texas, US. “Holly’s Instagram started when I rescued her in 2015 as I wanted to document her new life with me. In my nearly 30 years of helping animals in need, Holly was by far the most emotionally damaged I’d ever encountered. But her personality shone through, and we worke

felt safe, after being mistreated in her previous home ... She now has a YouTube channel, a TikTok account and an Instagram where she’s nearing a quarter of a million followers. Her story has resonated with so many, as people with PTSD can relate to hers – some of her followers have even told us that she lifts their spirits and makes them laugh. Yet some people still feel the need to be cruel, with comments stating they’ll throw her in a pot of boiling water because she looks like a plucked chicken. I’ve had people tell me that I shouldn’t be using Holly as the public face, with cards arriving at my home with newspaper clippings and pictures of starving and beaten animals. It’s terrifying knowing they know where I live.” Still, Stacey is determined that Holly’s now global platform will continue to be used to help dogs in need. “I rescue and rehabilitate emotionally and physically challenged dogs and specialise in hairless breeds since they need a whole new set of grooming and dietary needs,” she says. “Holly has an Amazon wish list and we are constantly compiling donations to those who need it. Through Holly, I answer questions about dog foods, spay/ neuter programmes, animal abuse, adoption and volunteering, fostering, skin care for hairless dogs and more!”

Your Problem! RUSSIAN doctors have removed a giant hairball from a woman’s abdomen. The woman, 30, whose name has not been reported, had been suffering from pain in her lower abdomen and decided to address her health concerns with specialists in the city of Kolomna, just 114 kilometres outside the Russian capital Moscow. She then underwent tests which showed she had a massive dermoid cyst in her stomach, said to be the same size as a large coconut. Tatiana Shavrak, who is the head of the centre, said, “A dermoid cyst is a benign neoplasm in the ovary. The capsule of the cyst has thick walls and contains a mucus-like mass with different tissues of the body.” Shavrak noted that there was a risk that there might be epidermis, adipose tissue, sebaceous glands, hair, bones, and even teeth inside this cyst, so the only way forward was a surgical removal. Doctors managed to successfully remove the neoplasms through small incisions during the operation. There are no updates on the woman’s condition but Shavrak has stressed that stories like this woman’s are examples of why it is important to get regular check-ups.

RIHANNA ‘likes to antagonise fans a lile bit’ when it comes to her long-awaited new music. The star hasn’t released new tunes since her 2016 record Anti, which included the hit single Work, and the musician-turnedfashion designer told Entertainment Tonight she’s enjoying the speculaon about potenal new offerings. “To be connued,” she teased, miming three dots with her fingers. “I like to antagonise my fans a lile bit. Well, they antagonise me, too! So, they get it right back.” Meanwhile, the Umbrella singer is focusing on the the launch of her new Fenty 2-20 collecon, and she confessed her rise to prominence within the fashion industry has been ‘incredible’. “It’s a lot of hard work and just being true to your brand. The star has also confessed the tragic death of basketball star Kobe Bryant is sll weighing heavy on her mind. Following his passing, she shared a hearelt tribute online, and in a chat with Entertainment Tonight confessed she doesn’t think she’ll ever ‘really get over’ his shock death. “Every me I see a helicopter, it’s just like – as an entertainer, we travel so much, like, in your mind, it could have been any of us,” she said. “My heart breaks, my heart goes out to Vanessa Bryant and the enre Bryant family and all of the families that lost people that day. It’s a tragedy and I think it’s something that the world will never really get over.”

Eminem Loses Himself Again

EMINEM stunned the audience at the 2020 Academy Awards recently by staging a surprise performance of his Oscar-winning hit, Lose Yourself. The hip-hop icon appeared onstage at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, having won the prize for Best Original Song for the lead track from his semi-autobiographical movie, 8 Mile, back in March 2003. His unexpected set occurred following a montage of clips celebrating memorable movie songs, and had guests like Wonder Woman’s Gal Gadot and Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s Kelly Marie Tran happily rapping along to Lose Yourself from their seats, while singer Billie Eilish also appeared to enjoy the segment. After the performance, Eminem, who did not attend the 2003 prize giving, took to Twitter to mark the occasion. “Look, if you had another shot, another opportunity...,” the 47-year-old began, referencing the lyrics to the tune. “Thanks for having me @TheAcademy. Sorry it took me 18 years to get here.”

THE CATCH-UP HAVING got over some tough times, Judy star Renée Zellweger has found happiness, fulfilment and another Oscar in her own special somewhere over the rainbow.

T

RENÉE ZELLWEGER: 14

SOURCE: FEATS PRESS PICS: MAGAZINE FEATURES

HE Hollywood actress admits she was terrified at the prospect of playing late Wizard Of Oz star Judy Garland but going back on her early intention of turning down the opportunity has proved to be a golden moment in her colourful career. The result is a Best Actress Academy Award win for Judy, a movie set around Garland’s ill-fated concert tour to London in 1969 in what turned out to be her last public appearance before her death, at the age of just 47, from a drug overdose. Renée, an Oscar-winner already for her Cold Mountain supporting role 16 years ago, was a 2020 awards season contender before the movie had even been released, with film festival attendees stunned at her portrayal. Winning the Oscar marks an incredible comeback for the star, who just a few years ago seemed lost both personally and professionally. Now 50, the Bridget Jones actress has more than turned things around both as an actress and producer as well as a proud equal rights activist. It’s no coincidence that Renée’s new, positive outlook on life has come at the same time as a positive change in her private life. The actress has been dating blues guitarist Doyle Bramhall for eight years now.The couple first met years before when they attended university together in Texas; the friendship blossomed into the

‘I COULD NEVER HAVE DREAMED OF THIS’

kind of low-profile romance that clearly suits Renée after failed previous relationships with Jim Carrey, Bradley Cooper and Jack White of the White Stripes. And while she clearly still has a thing for musicians, Renée has learned her lesson from what she calls ‘the biggest mistake of her personal life’ and her 128-day marriage to country singer Kenny Chesney back in 2005. Grasping her golden guy, today Renée looks stunned by her Oscar win as she talks about regrets and how playing her idol on the big screen most certainly isn’t one of them. The actress also reveals how she’s come to terms with fame and how she’s proud women her age are finally being seen and heard rather than forgotten by Hollywood.

Judy Garland

Q: How does it feel to be a two-time Oscar-winning actress?

RZ: It’s crazy. It’s just crazy. It’s crazy and so special. I don’t know what to say.

Q: When you were making Judy, did you think it might lead you here to this moment?

RZ: No. I didn’t think outside of that moment in time. There was a lot in front of me so I was really just focused on each moment of portraying this incredible woman. The experience of making the film, the collaboration, was so special but I could never have dreamed it would lead to all of this.

Q: How does it feel to be loved and admired for your work by your peers and audiences around the world, and what’s the fame that comes with that like?

RZ: It’s always weird. It’s not something that you are born with the faculties to navigate naturally. It’s not natural to be a famous person. It still feels so peculiar to me – like it’s not real somehow. But I think I have got better at managing it. It doesn’t really exist in my life unless someone puts it in front of me or points it out. I don’t feel like a famous person.

Q: Does winning awards make you think about your career and look back on all you have accomplished?

RZ: I just see it as a celebration of Judy, the film we made and the very special relationship we all had making it. It’s great to have had this reunion with everyone and to celebrate with all the other nominees and congratulate them because the work this year has just been off the charts.

Q: Is it true that until a couple of years ago you were refusing to even look at scripts? RZ: Yes, because that was the only way to get away. I went to school, set up shop in a house, fell in love, adopted some dogs, watched my niece and nephew grow up; I created a television show and filmed it. I took a break but I didn’t sit around. I was doing life things and working away from the cameras. Then they wanted to make a film about Bridget Jones with a baby...

Renee as Judy

Q: What was the moment you decided to take a break from all this? RZ: After doing the same thing for 25 years, I was just going in a cycle of things over and over again. I was grateful for the experiences, the things I got to do and see, but I needed to do something for my personal life – to grow a little bit and learn something different.

Q: What is your secret to staying out of the limelight?

RZ: All of the limelight-y stuff is just a consequence of the job. I don’t really plan anything. I sort of live and make choices. I like the work. I like to collaborate. I like that insular experience of being on a set. It’s the best job in the world. The rest of it is a different part of the job.

Q: Are you happy with all of the choices you have made in your life and career?

RZ: No. I think anybody who says they are happy with all of the decisions they have made is lying. I’ve done some dumb things but I don’t regret having made mistakes because they teach us, right? I have learned a lot from the things I have done.

Q: So how did Judy come about for you?

RZ: I never actually said ‘yes’! It was just an experiment. A producer friend of mine from a very long time ago sent a magnificent script. It tells a story about a part of her life that not too many people are familiar with. It’s a very specific time period, sort of the end of her life. I didn’t say ‘yes’ at first because I thought, ‘Are you crazy?’ But he said, ‘Come to England and we’ll just see…’ That became this immersion in the materials of Judy Garland’s life – her music, her talent, stories, anecdotes and all of the books. There is so much, out there, thank goodness! It just started with this exploration into trying to better understand this person who I have always loved.

15

important.

Q: How did it feel when you eventually stepped into the shoes of such a huge Hollywood icon?

RZ: She’s beyond iconic so it was terrifying but wonderful and such a special experience because everybody involved was so in love with her. We were showing up and it was this huge celebration of her every day. Everybody brought their best because they felt telling this part of her story was so

Q: What did it take for you to physically transform into Judy Garland?

RZ: A lot of work. I was basically wearing 17 people’s jobs because of all the prosthetics, make-up and everything else. We got it down to a good hour-and-a-half or two hours at one point, which was great. We tried to minimise that so it wouldn’t be a distraction. It felt more like an exploration of who this person really was than a transformation.

Q: Have you always been Judy Garland fan?

RZ: Always. I have always loved her and I love more now. She’s my hero.

Q: How hard is it to jump from one character to another as an actress?

RZ: I don’t find that difficult. I find that exciting. All characters kind of stay with me a little bit because they kind of wear off on you.

Q: How exciting is it to have so many avenues open to you as an actress today what with film, TV and streaming? RZ: It’s great. There is so much opportunity now because there are so many different outlets. Things are happening so quickly. I think there’s a renaissance for writers and they can finally make their pet projects and their original content. Where they go, we follow because women my age are looking for something that they can connect to and fall in love with. More variety is exciting for people who love storytelling.

Q: How would you sum up your experience playing Judy Garland and what it has led to for you personally this awards season?

RZ: To celebrate her crew of people who were in love with her just feels so important. It feels like everybody has embraced her with this experience. To be a part of that is just a dream.

And by ‘tips’ I mean ‘controlled eating disorders’.” During her 1989 world tour Taylor often shared the stage with her model BFFs like Karlie Kloss, Lily Aldridge and Martha Hunt, and at the peak of her obsession she managed to squeeze into an American size zero – the same waist measurement as the average six-year-old. “She lost 9kg in less than three months,” adds the insider. “She basically starved herself.” Taylor goes on to explain that losing the weight made her feel validated in the modelling world. “I’d walk into a photo shoot and be in the dressing room, and somebody would say, ‘Oh, wow, this is so amazing that you can fit into the sample sizes. Usually we have to make alterations to the dresses, but we can take them right off the runway and put them on you!’” Taylor admitted. “And I looked at that as a pat on the head.” Luckily for Taylor, the model squad has since disbanded. Tay-Tay had a fall-out with Karlie Kloss, who didn’t invite her to her wedding last year, and the singer is focused on only looking at the positive influences in and her life. “I think a lot of us push the boundaries of dieting, but taking it too far can be really dangerous,” Taylor explains. “There is no quick fix. Taylor also opens up about her battle with anorexia, and sources now reveal her skinny girl squad was a big influence. “I tend to get triggered by something – whether it’s a picture of me where I feel like my tummy looked too big or someone said I looked pregnant,” Taylor admits in her new documentary. “And that will trigger me to just starve a little bit.” The star goes on to explain that Internet trolls and bad camera angles have been the main reason for the disorder, but insiders close to the pop star reveal that that’s only half the story. Taylor looked healthy throughout her career until she started hanging out with the infamous model squad made up of faces like Kendall Jenner, Gigi and Bella Hadid and Cara Delevingne, and being spotted with them put a lot of pressure on Taylor to look MISS like them. Interviewed by friend Sandra Bullock, the 51-year-old — who got social media going crazy in a leather jacket with knee high boots, as well as a revealing open-cut black number — opened up about her personal life. “I think everything happens in its own time, and I think for whatever reason, life had to happen in both of our worlds the way it did,” she told the actress. Bullock responded, “I mean, you can be an asshole but you’re so charming! You really have a way of pushing joy and positivity. Of course, haters will always hate, and some are asking whether Adele might be going too far, especially as she has recently been called ‘unrecognisable’ by some of her fans. A slimmer face has resulted in Adele’s eyes being more prominent, her nasal labial folds deeper, her crow’s feet more pronounced and her face shape and structure overall sharper and more angular. Internationally renowned wellbeing and lifestyle consultant Yvonne Wake explains: “Sometimes, major weight loss can for some people make your jawline and cheeks more angular, which can cause some people to look older. Adele looks completely different because she has lost a lot of adipose tissue from her entire body. We hold on to water and our bodies are highly inflamed when we are overweight. This transformation will always show in our faces fairly quickly when we lose weight. Her rapid weight loss will also show out as her looking so very different, but that is just what happens when the body starts to look after itself better. I think it suits Adele to have lost this weight, and it’s healthy for her heart if done in the right way.” Meanwhile, Adele says she remains more focussed on living her own life and not worrying about what banter is happening on the streets. “I’m the first to admit that the last year has been a tough one. I’ve changed drastically and I’m still changing and that’s okay,” she says. “For the first time in a decade I’m ready to feel the world around me and look up for once. HE actress might have turned 51 this year, but has she really aged a day since starring in Friends as Rachel Green back in 1994? Her glowing skin and toned body say no. Jen Aniston’s as timeless as they come and being a creature of habit, she sticks to what really works. And we’ve got good news:

LIFESTYLE WHAT’S IN HER BAG? BY CARLI PRINSLOO

even if you’re not working with a Hollywood budget, you can still try her simple, and obviously effective, beauty and health tips at home. Yip, they’re that inexpensive! Her top three anti-ageing tips are actually ‘water, sleep, and sunscreen’, so Jen’s all about being naturally beautiful. Here’s what else works for her:

1 1. DRINK YOUR BREAKFAST JENNIFER believes in beauty from the inside out. “I make a quick shake with protein powder, spinach, maca powder, berries and vitamin C powder I put in there that’s pretty good.” And not to mention healthy. Premium Whey Protein: R299, Nutritech 2. PEEPER DE-PUFFER OUR absolute favourite tip from the actress is this one: “Put Vaseline on your eyes at night ‒ all over. It helps condition your lashes. My mom taught me that.” Blue Seal Original Petroleum Jelly (250ml): R34.99, Vaseline 3. PERFECT CUT HER signature layered long hairstyle allows her to air-dry and go – no styling necessary. “I usually shape the hair around my face with my fingers – just twist it and then refine it with a brush and let it air-dry.” Luxury Metal Pin Paddle Brush: R365, CHI 4. DITCH THE ZITS EVEN though her skin may look perfect, Jennifer assures us that she’s no stranger to waking up to a huge pimple on her face. Here’s what she does: “First I roll my eyes and get annoyed, and usually I will put some sort of a drying lotion on. I don’t pick it, although I used to.” Clarity Active Control: R130, Lamelle 5. THERE SHE GLOWS JEN glows, but doesn’t shine. Choosing a tinted moisturiser or sheer foundation and going easy on the powder gives her a youthful look. The actress doesn’t overdew it either, avoiding oil-slick shininess. UV Protect SPF50 Skin Defense BB Cream: R275, Vichy 6. ALMOST BARE FACED WHEN it comes to make-up, Jennifer follows a ‘less is more’ approach. Nude lipsticks and beige and brown eye shadows give her a subtle, natural beauty that never looks OTT. Nude Herbal Lipstick: R69.95, Palladio 7. SMOOTH MOVE SHE’S all about pampering her skin at home with a cleansing face scrub: “I would say do a scrub three times a week to really get [your] skin clean.” Pink Grapefruit Daily Scrub (150ml): R119.99, Neutrogena STOCKISTS: ALDO: (011) 884-4141 / CHI: (021) 790-1669 / LAMELLE: WWW.LAMELLE NEUTROGENA: SELECTED RETAILERS / NUTRITECH: SELECTED HEALTH STORES PALLADIO: 0860 347 243 / VASELINE: SELECTED RETAILERS / VICHY: 0861 184 249

LIFESTYLE WHAT THE TAROT HOLDS BY MADAME LIRA DE MENTUM

IF you play your cards right, you’ll have a great week! AQUARIUS

(January 20 – February 118) Card Of The Week: Ten Of Cups A GREAT card to appear in any spread, the Ten Of Cups means good luck will find you this week. After what was a turbulent 2019 for you and your loved ones, things will seem greatly improved. Communication will improve, bonds will be formed and relationships mended. Enjoy this period of harmony and peace and let it infiltrate to all aspects of your life.

ARIES

(March 21 – April 19) Card Of The Week: The Moon YOU’RE exhausted. You’re ratty. You can’t concentrate. No wonder: if you’re suffering from insomnia it can wreak havoc on your life. This card is a signal for you to relook at your sleeping habits. The good news is that most cases of insomnia can be cured. But if tweaking your bedtime routine and steering clear of sleep disruptors like caffeine, alcohol and electronics doesn’t help then it may be time to talk to a doctor.

TAURUS (April 20 – May 20) Card Of The Week: The King Of Swords THIS week may see you turning to a professional advisor, such as a solicitor or attorney, financial adviser or taxation consultant, for assistance on an important matter. Seek someone who has reputable credentials and be sure to ask what their fees are upfront to prevent any nasty surprises later on. If you have a complicated situation it’s best to meet the advisor face-to-face.

GEMINI

VIRGO

(May 21 – June 20) Card Of The Week: The Hierophant IF it’s commitment you’ve been after, this period may very well see your relationship sail to the next level. The Hierophant is the marriage and commitment card of the Major Arcana. If single, this card is also a great omen and suggests a new love interest is on his/her way. If you’re wondering what this potential partner will feel towards you, don’t worry: The Hierophant reassures you that they have good intentions.

(August 23 – September 22) Card Of The Week: Three Of Wands (reversed) STOP playing small. Yes, everything in life involves a certain degree of risk but if you don’t put your all into your goals, chances are you will fall short of achieving them. Disappointment and frustration may lead to your turning down a golden opportunity this week either in your studies, work or love life. Keep in mind that this particular opportunity does not come around every day and if you refuse it, it may never come around again.

CANCER

LIBRA

(June 21 – July 22) Card Of The Week: Seven Of Cups IS your boss or a work colleague/staff member causing unnecessary friction? While you can’t control their attitude, you can control how their attitude affects you. Try changing the way you interact with people in the business arena, especially those who carry the stamp of authority or success. If you can come to a better understanding of who you are dealing with and what makes them react in certain ways, you can better navigate a path to forming a better relationship with them.

(September 23 – October 22) Card Of The Week: Eight Of Pentacles HOORAY for the Eight Of Pentacles if you’ve been having sleepless nights over money. This card symbolises that your apprenticeship and hard work will bring you the financial freedom you need, even if it’s just fleeting. However, keep in mind that this is not a period for financial expansion, but rather one of review.

LEO (July 23 – August 22) Card Of The Week: The Queen Of Wands A PASSIONATE and energetic woman who falls under the fire sign Aries, Leo or Sagittarius will be making her way into your life this week. She may not necessarily be a new romantic interest, but rather someone who lights up your life just enough to motivate you to achieve your goals for this year. By following the advice of this female influence, you will achieve success.

PISCES

(February 19 – March 20) Card Of The Week: The Chariot

FOREIGN travel, faraway places and relations with foreign cultures are on the cards for you this week. Whether by plane or boat, you’ll be leaving the comfort of your home and embarking on an exciting (and somewhat daunting) adventure. Whether travel is part of a work project, or for personal reasons, rest assured that the voyage will be well worth it. Remember these golden rules: go with your gut, sleep on it, avoid discussing it with everyone and consider the long-term consequences.

The Chariot

F you thirst for all things mystical our weekly tarot reading will guide you to a clearer path. One card drawn for each of star signs shows you what to expect and how to improve your week!

THE Chariot card is an indicator of great success. A warrior stands inside a carriage wearing armour decorated with crescent moons. Don’t be fooled into thinking he is privileged to be able to steer because he’s in the driver’s seat – he isn’t holding onto any reins and instead is able to control the chariot through his own strength of will and powerful mind.

SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21) Card Of The Week: The Knight Of Wands IT started out as just a hobby, but this week you’ll realise that your side-line interest can be more than just a labour of love. There is money to be made, whether your hobby is writing/blogging, craft-making, music, photography, gardening, pet sitting or refereeing or umpiring. Remember that earnings can vary drastically – from a few hundred rand to thousands – so keep your fulltime job until you’re off the ground.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 21) Card Of The Week: Two Of Swords THIS way or that? Making a choice when it comes to life-altering decisions can be challenging, especially when each choice has its own set of pros and cons and neither seems more appealing than the other. The best way to tackle the scenario is to remain patient and avoid pressure from other people, which could lead to you making an abrupt decision.

SIDE-LYING QUAD STRETCH: This stretch targets the quadriceps and also provides a stretch for the hip flexors. 1. Begin by lying on your left side on a yoga mat with your legs extended out. 2. Release your right leg and draw your foot towards your bottom. Using your right hand, hold your foot so that your right leg is behind you with your foot close to your bottom. 3. Ensure that your right quad is parallel with your left quad. You should feel the stretch on the front of your right thigh. Hold this position, breathing deeply throughout. 4. Repeat this stretch on the other side.

Stretch FIRST THING

S

TART your morning off with a good stretch, says world-renowned fitness trainer Kayla Itsines, and say goodbye to that sluggish, tight feeling. Kayla suggests you start your day by checking in with your body and releasing any tension from sleep – in short, she wants us to start our day off on the right foot. Here are some of the stretches she recommends:

Make Small Changes

YOU'RE never going to start seeing results immediately, but your hard work will pay off if you stay motivated and inspired. So start off slow: You can't change your diet and fitness regimen at the same time. That will leave you feeling overwhelmed, which will probably end up with you quitting one, or both, of the new programmes. Experts suggest you make small changes. For instance, cut down on portions one week, start training the next, and so on. Rushing will only end in disaster ‒ give your body time to get into a healthy routine, which will in turn leave you feeling and looking incredible.

MERMAIDS: Do these to release tension from the side of your body ‒ they target the lats, obliques, shoulders and inner thighs. 1. Begin in a seated position. Bend your knees and position your feet together firmly on the mat. Using your left hand, tuck your left leg behind you so that your shin and the top of your foot is resting on the mat. Release your right leg and place your shin and the outside of your right foot on the mat, resting your foot on the inside of your left thigh. Release your left arm and rest your hand on your left foot. This is your starting position. 2. Lengthen your spine to sit up tall and reach your right arm towards the ceiling.

COURTESY OF WWW.KAYLAITSINES.COM PIC: ADOBE STOCK

IF YOU’VE WOKEN UP WITH A STIFF NECK: 1. With your arms by your sides, plant both feet on the floor slightly further than shoulder width apart. This is your starting position. Gently rotate your neck to bring your chin towards your right shoulder. 2. Gently rotate your neck to return to starting position. Repeat, rotating your chin towards your left shoulder. Continue alternating between right and left.

T STRETCH: This h opens the chest houlders. 1. Plant both feet on the floor slightly further than shoulder width apart. 2. Bring your hands together behind your body and interlock your fingers. 3. Gently extend your arms and pull your hands away from your body. This should cause your shoulders to retract and open up your chest.

Satisfy That Sweet Tooth

FEELING like something sweet but don't want to feel guilty after? Here are some suggestions: 1.Choose naturally sweet foods, like fruit. 2.Make a healthy smoothie. 3.Make healthy desserts like berry popsicles. 4.Make healthy chocolate swaps – dark chocolate for the win!

THE ups and downs of joint savings accounts.

‘What’s Mine D ’

AVID and Victoria Beckham share a bank account. So do Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, as well as Meryl Streep and Don Gummer. While it works for them, when it comes to opening joint savings accounts, financial planner at Momentum Financial Planning Ernest Zamisa warns South Africans that our behaviour is our downfall. “If you look at South African savings behaviour, you will see that we simply

do not have the discipline to reap the benefits of joint finances,” says Ernest. “The latest Household Financial Wellness Index conducted by Momentum and UNISA found that only a quarter of South African households are financially well. This research also shows that behaviour is the most critical component to financial success, so technically, only a quarter of households would benefit from joint accounts.” WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES? In an ideal world, the advantages of joint accounts mean your bills would be shared and everything would come out of one account. This would give you clear records of what’s going on. And with technology, we are all fortunate to have smartphones in our pocket that help us monitor this activity in real time. Having a joint account and clear guidelines for how to manage it may prevent arguments about money. If both of you have equal access, it will also allow you and your partner to be more open about income, expenses and money in general. DEATH IS INEVITABLE: Everybody is going to die. This is an unfortunate inevitability of life. But what happens to your joint account? I always advise my clients to always keep the end in mind. financial issues dispassionate and legal. When four people running a business create a joint account, they would have a written and signed agreement in place to ensure that the account is not abused and all parties agree, legally, on conduct on the account going forward. Most married couples do not do this, but should consider it. Before you and your spouse open a joint account, you need to consider what kind of marriage you are in. Is it in community of property? Is it out of community of property with or without accrual? Based on that you can have a separate written and signed agreement for your bank account that falls in line with the legal terms of your marriage. TRANSPARENCY HURTS INDEPENDENCE: It may not be a critical facet of financial life, but there is a certain degree of freedom lost when all you have is a joint account. The transparent nature of this account will see to it that your partner always knows when money is spent or cash is drawn. What happens when you want to buy a surprise gift for your partner only for them to receive a notification on their phone? The surprise is lost. Everyone needs a little financial independence. game is certain. When you are planning your finances you have to be thinking about what happens when your estate needs to be wound down. When you die, your accounts will be frozen. This includes joint accounts. The winding down of one’s estate needs to be simplified with all precautions taken. Have extra accounts that are tied to individuals so they can be accessed when needed. Nobody wants to be worried about frozen accounts and cash flow issues when grieving for a lost loved one. CREDIT SCORES ARE SHARED|: Ernest Zamisa It doesn’t matter what kind of agreement you are entering into, you should always know the other person’s background. For better or worse, both parties in a partnership will always reflect on one another. This logic applies to joint savings accounts, too. You need to look at the credit score of the person you are tied to in a joint account. If they have a bad credit score, it will likely negatively impact your score as well. What Do They Do? WHEN Jane started growing her own vegetables and herbs it was a natural step to experiment with making unguents, lotions and potions. Her mom’s old double boiler ‘was hauled out from the back of the cupboard and put to good use melting beeswax and shea butter. Abundant herb harvests were chopped, macerated, dried, steeped, spread and made into everything from delicious body creams to healing tinctures’. This has now led to Jane developing a range of 100 percent natural body products for hard working hands and bodies. “The products are hand-made by the Angel Factory in the small Free State town of Lindley.

PREHEAT the oven to 200°C. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Unroll the pastry and lay it flat on the tray. Using a sharp knife, score a 1.5cm border around the sheet of pastry without cutting all the way through. Brush the pastry with the whisked egg and bake in the oven (about 20 minutes). Remove from oven and gently push down the centre of the tart that has risen during baking, so that you are left with an indent in the middle and a risen border on the outside. Place the cream cheese, dill, sour cream, mustard, spring onions and feta in a food processor. Blend until smooth and season to taste. Spread the mixture into the hollow of the tart case, sprinkle over the Gruyère and top with slices of Brie. Heat a griddle pan until smoking hot. Drizzle a bit of olive oil over the broccoli and fry until charred (about five minutes). Turn them over halfway through the cooking time and season lightly to taste. Arrange the charred broccoli on top of the Brie slices. Bake the tart until the cheese has melted (about 10 minutes). Add dollops of pesto and scatter the salmon flakes, walnuts and basil leaves or microherbs on top to serve.

owever, her strict exercise roune isn’t the only way Victoria gets her body so lean. She relies on a healthy eang plan as well. The star swears by starng her day with apple cider vinegar to clean her gut. “Be brave! Two tablespoons first thing on an empty tummy,” she says. Victoria starts her day with a bowl of sprouted grain cereal containing wheat, barley, beans, lenls, millet and spelt, which she then tops with ‘unsweetened organic almond milk’. She also likes making her family her signature ‘green monster’ smoothies, which contain chopped apple, kiwi, lemon, spinach, broccoli and Chia Seeds all blended together. For lunch and dinner, Victoria loves her vegetables, parcularly broccoli, beans and peas, and typically pairs them with fish ‒ mostly salmon. Victoria also loves indulging in sushi and it’s something the whole Beckham family enjoys together. The star adds that she has cut out all milk and cheese from her diet as well, which has given her body a healthy boost. For her skin, the star says she ‘eats three or four avocados a day’ to keep it healthy. Avocados are a rich source of monounsaturated fat and they also feature high amounts of vitamin E, which is an anoxidant that helps protect cells from oxidave stress, which has been connected to ageing. “I enjoy eang healthily,” Victoria says. “And I’m in the fortunate posion where it’s easy for me. I can afford to eat well. I expect a lot from my body and I’m never sick. You have to be kind to your body if you expect a lot from it.” We couldn’t have said it beer ourselves.

T

HE actress wowed the crowds when she hit the Oscars looking trimmed down and totally glamorous in an old Hollywood style gold ruched gown and a deep pink off-the-shoulder number. This has not been through an overnight fad diet though. Rebel started her weight loss journey in 2016. She has now made a complete lifestyle change to be healthy instead of a crash dieting, which is damaging to one’s health and ultimately always unsustainable. It hasn’t been easy for her, as she revealed that while ‘others turn to alcohol or drugs to celebrate or self-medicate, she turned to food for comfort or reward’. “I love me some ice cream or dessert, and it comes at times when I’m happy or sad. You would probably describe it as emotional or stress-eating, ” she admitted. With that dependency behind her, here’s how she’s dropping the kilos: The Jojo Rabbitt star is on a seven-day cardio programme with trainer Jon Castano, which involves walking and jogging. His tip is to always keep moving and he recommends counting your steps, aiming for 10 000 per day, something Rebel swears by. She also does circuit training in the gym three or four times a week. This consists of the assault bike, battle rope slams, and TRX squats. For the fun part of exercising, she loves tennis and hiking. Diet-wise she does not count calories, rather focusing on eating healthily and avoiding junk food. She tries to consume 35g of fibre a day, and relies on snacks like cashews and almonds, zucchini chips with veggie humus, or carrot and cucumber with guacamole. She ensures that she incorporates healthy fats such as oily fish and avos, and sticks to the lean proteins such as chicken breasts. Rebel also always has water at hand while exercising, to keep hydrated. We’d say it’s totally working for her!

ICTORIA BECKHAM, despite mothering four children, has an amazing body, having found a way to keep herself lean and fit. The great news is that we get to find out just what that way is, having got the chance to hear from her former trainer Louisa Drake, who opened up on how a mix of Pilates, yoga, ballet and barre has helped Victoria look so damn good. “We would prep for events and roles several mes a year, and this would dictate the intensity of the training schedule and the overall focus of the results. I was always so impressed with how driven and disciplined she was,” Louisa tells us on her me training Victoria, adding that Posh enjoyed a balanced workout and pushed hard to exercise every part of her body. “She loved working her core, arms and legs, so she was prey keen on all elements of her training. Vic is a busy, acve woman who is really disciplined and never missed a workout. She trained as a dancer, so she naturally had a great sense of what her body can do [regarding] co-ordinaon, flexibility and range.” To start her day, Victoria heads out on a 5kmrun. “I go for a run every morning and I work out for an hour with a PT, which gives me just enough me to get to the kitchen to puree Romeo’s avocados,” the star said in a recent interview. “I’ll then fit in another hour’s workout before I go to the office. I’m very disciplined, I have to be. It’s really the only me in the day I get to myself.”

OF THE JENN HOW the Jenner sisters bloomed into international superstars over the last decade.

A

T the beginning of last decade, one would never have thought that Kim, Kourtney and Khloé Kardashian’s younger sisters would go on to build an incredible empire in their own right. Through the ’10s, Kendall worked her way to becoming the highest-paid supermodel in the world while Kylie Jenner went on to become the youngest self-made billionaire. We take a look at how the past 10 years have shaped Kendall and Kylie into the superstars that they are today.

A DECADE ago, Keeping Up With The Kardashians was in its fourth season and the family was well on the way to building the empire they have today. Kendall was just a shy teenager who almost seemed like a deer in the headlights when the cameras were around, but life is very different for the reality star today. Kendall has gone on to becoming one of the series’ favourite cast members and has built an exceptional career as a model. It was in 2010 when Kris Jenner set Kendall up at Wilhelmina Models and after a series of events, saw her becoming the highest-paid model of all time. Kendall has since walked for international fashion houses like Burberry, Fendi, Versace, Balmain and Tom Ford and walked in the famous Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show for the first time in 2015 – any model’s dream. She essentially became one of the biggest influencers in the fashion industry and has brands lining up at her door to dress her for events, premieres and other red-carpet shindigs, and she’s one of the biggest fashion icons in the world. The star wore a stunning feathery Donatella Versace gown to the Met last year and had the world abuzz. But she has the world abuzz with pretty much every aspect of her life, not least of all the romantic side, and the fact is she essentially had to learn how to date in the public eye. Over the past decade we’ve seen her connected to the likes of A$AP Rocky, Harry Styles, Blake Griffin and Ben Simmons, and we have to admit, we’re eager to see where things go from here. One thing’s for sure: whoever does end up with her will be one lucky dude; the elder Jenner sister has thrived and her rise to almost blinding success has been fascinating to track.

AT the start of the decade, Kylie Jenner, the youngest in the KarJenner clan, was only 12 years old and no one could have predicted the impact the star would have on the world just a few years later. Today, she is the youngest self-made billionaire and a mom, and continues to push boundaries while paving the way for women around the world. It’s a world she grew up in front of, and with that came a steepish learning curve for the star. Unfortunately, the ’10s saw a massive increase in cyber bullying and Kylie, being in the public eye at such a young age, needed to find a way to deal with her own share of trolls. This is why she opted for lip fillers at an early age. Following that, Kylie went from a starry-eyed teen to a fully-fledged bombshell. While she’s received criticism for her excessive use of fillers, it became the catapult for her cosmetics range which, today, is valued at over $1.2-billion. Kylie launched Kylie Cosmetics back in 2015 and it instantly became a phenomenon with young women around the world; now the star’s recently sold a stake in the business for $600-million, making it one of the biggest deals in beauty this decade (if not, like, ever...). Besides being an incredibly successful businesswoman and social media star, Kylie, like Kendall, is a style icon as well. She too has designers waiting to dress her for any occasion and often pulls out all the stops when it comes to her red-carpet attire. Relationship-wise, she started last decade with flings with Cody Simpson and Jaden Smith but it was her two-year on-again-off-again romance with Tyga that saw the star in her first media frenzy. After their breakup, Kylie started dating rapper Travis Scott in 2017 and welcomed their daughter Stormi Webster into the world. Although she faced a lot of criticism for getting pregnant at such an early age (and even went into hiding for most of her pregnancy) the younger Jenner sister is seemingly just as good a little mom as she is a businesswoman. Though she and Travis announced they had split a few months ago, they co-parent their little girl just fine, which is the important thing. Of course, life still has its fair share of challenges for the billionairess; 2019 proved a somewhat uncomfortable end to the decade, thanks to the media frenzy that nearly swept her away when her best friend Jordyn Woods kissed Khloé Kardashian’s baby daddy Tristan Thompson at a party. The two had had an extremely tight bond but unfortunately the betraying of Kylie’s sister seemed too much for their friendship to get past.

N 2010, ARC Fitness director of operations Rachael Heffner, 28, was in her first year of university when she asked a boy out who turned her down due to her weight, which peaked at 137kg and had her at a size 32. “It upset me, but I understood as more time passed by,” Rachel says. “You can’t help who you aren’t attracted to or who you are. Attraction isn’t something that can be forced.” What she felt she did give her control, though, ironically, was comfort eating. In fact, she felt that was the only way she had control.

“Emotional eating, binge eating were the only things I felt I could control when I was younger, especially after losing my mother to cancer,” Rachel admits. “I hated my life and myself, for the most part. I knew I was a good person, but I couldn’t stand to look at myself in the mirror. I looked at myself in my reflection and realised just how much I hated my life and I couldn’t go on living that way.” With her health quickly deteriorating, Rachel felt scared that she may not live to see 25, and so after a lot of determination she got rid of all the junk food in her house and started working out four times a week, and continuing down this path over her years at university, lost nearly 55kg by the time she graduated. “With determination and a light under my butt due to the rejection and then my father pushing me to work for what I wanted to accomplish, I went out and bought a new pair of shoes,” she recalls. “When I went back to school for winter break, I got rid of all my junk food and began working out (mostly cardio) four times a week – giving myself the weekend to enjoy with my friends. From there, I fell in love with the results. I continued all the way through college, losing about 54.5kg. I started by making smarter food choices, walking to class rather than using the shuttle; cutting portion sizes, making time to go to the gym and do my workout, regardless of how exhausted I was. I would have never accomplished the things I have without losing the weight and gaining confidence in myself. Not just physically, but mentally as well; knowing I can do anything I want, anything I set my mind to.” In 2014 she began dabbling with weightlifting and after meeting her coach, Adam Cayce, she lost a further 12.5kg. In 2017, she decided to undergo a 360-degree body lift, which is the removal of excess skin all the way round her body, and is now at a healthy weight of 63.5kg and a size six to eight. Rachael has also completely changed her diet. Before her fitness journey, she would eat pop tarts and cereal for breakfast, anything from her school like fried chicken wraps and Starbucks for lunch, and soup, sandwich, bread and crackers for her dinner. She now eats oatmeal with protein powder or egg whites for breakfast, chicken with three different vegetables and rice for lunch and another meal of protein powder or egg whites with avocado or almond butter for dinner. “I am very proud of who I am and how hard

Unsurprisingly, Rachel now receives countless compliments from men who think her body is ‘crazy’ and are especially impressed by her muscles. Despite the attention, though, she insists she is not ready for dating and is happy being single for now. “Obviously, I get more attention because of my physical appearance. Men normally compliment me on my physique, saying that it is crazy,” she says. “They say things about my muscles and how awesome it is that I have done so well with bodybuilding. I really don’t let it affect me. I appreciate the compliments – but I just am not interested in dating right now. I love being ‘alone’ because it allows me to work on myself and making myself the best I can be for when I do find that right someone. I am much more regimented now with my diet as well as my lifting/cardio. I make sure that I get the nutrition that I need to maintain the physique that I am striving for. The hardest thing is the mindset: you have to want it more than anything you’ve ever wanted, and you have to be willing to put yourself first, which is hard for people.” Rachel adds, “People are astounded and inspired, at least, I believe. I hope they are inspired to do whatever they have their mind set on. Take it one step at a time; focus on one thing – the gym, the food, etc. and slowly work toward adding in more elements. Doing it cold turkey and all at once is a way to fall off fast. Progress – not perfection.”

OMETIMES you need to know what it feels like to lose everything so that you can let go of what no longer serves you and start fresh. Giving up is a choice but it’s one that you don’t have to make. Two years ago Taryn-Lee Kearney – an plus-size woman – was asked by a friend if she would climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Taryn-Lee was far from athletic and fit, but she said yes anyway because the cause was close to her heart. The climb was in aid of raising mental health awareness. In just one year alone Taryn-Lee was personally affected by six suicides of family friends or their children. In addition, her mom was struggling with bipolar disorder – a diagnosis that had impacted her family tremendously. Bipolar, also known as manic-depression, is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks. “I wanted to show everyone that no matter your challenge, you can always come out stronger. Camping and hiking has never been in my vocabulary; I don’t even do it for fun, so this was certainly a challenge for me,” says TarynLee, who works as an industrial psychologist. “Despite being overweight, I physically and mentally prepared for the journey, but a month before leaving for Tanzania, I was struggling to find hiking clothes my size. It really was a blow to my self-esteem. A week before leaving, I found my hiking clothes in the men section in some specialised outdoor factory.” Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa and takes between five to nine days to complete. The overall statistics show that less than half of all climbers reach the summit. Every year, about 1 000 people are evacuated from the mountain, and 10 deaths are reported. The HERD team, together with their dedicated wildlife veterinarian team, Provet Wildlife Services, are treating the wounds daily, taking it step by step. “The biggest concern is to avoid infection during these healing stages. Her injuries are taking a long time to heal, but we knew they would due to the severity of them. Generally, though, her Khanyisa with the Jabulani condition remains positive, herd in the background her spirits remain up and she has good energy. Elephant calves are one of the most difficult wild animals to hand-rear. The mortality rates are incredibly high, as their condition can change overnight. (When they ‘teethe’ they can get diarrhoea and fevers, making them especially vulnerable to dehydration, which can prove fatal). They are entirely dependent on their mother’s milk. This means we need to step in ahead of introducing the little ones to our resident special Jabulani rescue herd, as the cows are not lactating. Baby elephants also have social and emotional needs that need special care too. The elephant species is a lot more complicated

than that of rhinos, and require a more intensive approach. This is also why, for now, she is accompanied by a Pedi sheep called Lammie, a world famous surrogate mother/companion to orphan rhinos and other little elephants in the past. She is often by Khanyisa’s side, or not far behind, making sure the little ellie does not feel alone.” HERD was built alongside the Jabulani Stables and completed in August 2019. Previously elephant calves were raised at HESC, which is a 30-minutes’ drive away, and then reintegrated into the herd. Now HERD provides specialised care for elephant orphans until such time they are ready to integrate with the adult herd at Jabulani Safari. Planning Khanyisa’s reintegration, Roode is continually consulting with a team of professional

Khanyisa with HERD’s Adine Rood elephant behaviourists and advisors to determine the best time to start the soft integration with the herd. Khanyisa has been introduced to the herd through the dividing fence between the orphanage and the Jabulani stables, and they continually communicate with one another. The matriarch, Tokwe, is frequently checking up on her through the fence, standing there even when the little one is in her nursery in the evenings. Before Khanyisa goes anywhere, however, her injuries will have had to heal completely. According to their rescuer, Lente Roode, the original Jabulani herd members were orphaned too and were rescued from Zimbabwe in 2002. “They are unique, as they accept elephant orphans from outside their own herd into their family, which is unheard of with wild herds.” Says Adine, “The strength of elephants’ family bonds and social dynamics are vital to their wellbeing and survival as individuals and as a species. We work together with experienced conservationists, carers and veterinarians to rehabilitate and rewild orphaned elephants to ensure that every elephant has a herd.” With ‘every elephant needs a herd’ being HERD’s motto, little pink elephant can look forward to joining this precious blended family, where she’ll be safe and looked after for the rest of her life.

Roode recalls that day: “She was dehydrated and severely injured. The snare was embedded tightly around her head, causing deep lacerations behind her ears and neck, with the top of one of her ears sliced off during the process. The lacerations sliced into both her cheeks and into her mouth. The snare had wrapped itself around her face as she tried to free herself, causing those deep wounds. She had managed to remove the snare from the place it was set, and had been roaming with the snare wound around her face for approximately four days. Her cheeks had maggot infestations, due to the decaying flesh from the wounds.” Having a badly injured area around her mouth that required stitching, she was not drinking as much as the carers wanted. REAL LIFE

NEW WIFE, SAME METHOD... W

HEN William New called police to tell them that his wife was dead, he thought he had a solid story. It was 04h02 on the morning of October 15, 2004. “Oh my God,” he told the 911-operator on the other end of the phone. “I was just gone for a little while. I drove to Rite Aid [a pharmacy] to get her some migraine medicine. I was gone maybe 30 minutes.” He sounded distraught. New claimed he had an idea about what had happened. “Somebody broke into my house,” he said. “My wife’s really hurt. She’s bleeding.” Less than two years later he was standing in a San Diego courtroom receiving a life sentence for double homicide. A jury found him guilty not only of murdering his wife Phyllis but also his first wife, Somsri New, in 1973. The similarity between both deaths was astounding – both women were shot in the head, while they were sleeping. Detective Pat Gardner investigated the death of Phyllis ‒ the third Mrs New, who came

after the second Mrs New was divorced. “The husband had supposedly left his house to get his wife some medication,” the detective says. “And when he returned to his home he found that somebody had broken into his home and murdered his wife during the 30 minutes while he was gone.” Gardner spoke to the paramedics that attended to Phyllis. “They arrived on the scene, declared Phyllis New deceased at the home and noticed that she already showed signs of rigor mortis,” he recalls. This was a significant clue because it called into question the timeline and scenario that New had given police. Deputy

medical examiner Dr Steven Campman examined one of the paramedic’s report. “In his opinion she had been dead for at least a couple of hours,” he explained. “He felt rigor mortis in her face and maybe in an arm and he saw some colour changes of her body that let him know that, in his experience, she had been dead for some time.” Rigor mortis is the stiffening of the body; livor mortis is the settling of blood in the body – coroners use both signs to determine the approximate time of death. Pointing at a crime scene photo showing red patches on one of the victim’s arms, Campman says, “It generally takes a couple of hours for this to

REAL LIFE be very visible. So for that to be seen at four in the morning suggested that she’d been dead a couple of hours.” Immediately it seemed that New’s story was untrue. If an intruder had broken into the house, it wasn’t during the 30 minutes while he was at the chemist... And there were other inconsistencies between the crime scene and New’s story. “Present in the home was a very large, free-standing jewellery box,” Gardner says. “It had eight drawers total and two vertical drawers on the side. Basically only three of those drawers had been disturbed – the very top ones.” The rest of them were completely full of jewellery. That was very unusual for a robbery. “My gut told me that there were some serious problems and it didn’t appear to be a residential murder or burglary,” says Gardner, who added something else: “The shot seemed to be an execution style shot. That’s something you don’t normally see in a home invasion.” By now Gardner refused to believe New and his version of events. His colleague Detective Richey Hann took the man downtown for further questioning. He too had his doubts about the recently widowed man. “We knew at that point he was the only person that was in the house with her at the time – or around the time that she died,” Hann says. “So he’s the one we needed to start with.” New ran through his day with the detectives, telling them that he had been to Office Team – a temp agency. But Carol Espinoza – one of Phyllis’ friends – had another story to tell police. In fact, three hours after she heard about the murder she called detectives to tell them what she knew. “My first thought was Bill has something to do with this,” Carol says. The night before her death Phyllis had confided in her friend. “She had called the temp agency where he was working and they had never heard of him. So she said to [Bill] ‘Well then I’ll be following you to work tomorrow and you better produce a payslip, a cheque or a pay time card or I’ve had it’. I felt she had pushed him into a corner and gave him an ultimatum: ‘This is it, I’m not carrying you anymore’.” After Carol gave them this information detectives called New in for another interview – the second one in the space of seven hours. New now told police that he had gone to the temp agency but confessed that he did not work for them. Phyllis, he said, was not mad at him, though. “I told her that I wasn’t working,” he informed Detective Hann. “And she got upset and she cried. She doesn’t get loud or anything like that... Nothing happened. We talked and we talked and we talked... She

REAL LIFE “He finally admitted that he had shot her in a gun-cleaning accident,” the detective says. “Well, it’s pretty unusual that if you shoot your wife you wouldn’t know the facts of the shooting, especially if it’s your wife that you supposedly shot.” Unwilling to let the issue go, Gardner located Somsri’s 1973 death certificate. He then called the San Bernardino police department and spoke to a Detective Dave Dillon, who worked in the county where the victim had lived. Dillon found 26 old film negatives taken of the Somsri New crime scene – the only surviving piece of evidence left in the case. “So what I asked them to do after that is blow them up into 8x10s, which told me another story about what happened at the scene,” Dillon says. “I looked at this and I saw that the blood splatter did not match with the trajectory of the bullet. Blood splatter had travelled to the back of the wall, which was not consistent with the bullet path. Based on my experience in homicide and having spent so much time there I thought and felt that this was in fact a murder. I just didn’t feel comfortable saying this was a death investigation.” Armed with this information Gardner took the investigation one step further. “I went over to the crime lab and I gave them the photographs and the reports. I asked them to do a crime scene reconstruction to determine scientifically what the Somsri New shooting was.” Gardner flew to Bexar County in San Antonio, Texas with a diagram of New’s 1973 apartment to speak to the medical examiner there. Forensic pathologist Dr Vincent Di Maio – a ballistics and gunshot wounds

expert – reviewed the evidence along with New’s statement. “According to the husband he was sitting on the couch and he started to get up or he was doing something at that time and the gun fell from his hand and he grabbed it in mid air and it accidentally discharged,” Di Maio says. Holding a shotgun in his hand, he points out: “It would be awful hard to drop this gun and get your finger in the trigger part and put pressure on it. Because you need, not only for it to get in, but it’s got to also fire. On top of that, if he’s sitting down and the weapon slips from him the bullet would have to have travelled in an upward direction to her head. “However, the bullet, after entering the head and exiting the face, then went into the back of the couch and into the wall behind in a downward trajectory. So actually the overall trajectory of the bullet was into the head, through the face, through the back of the couch, into the wall, which is not consistent with his account where the bullet would have had to have been going upward.” The gunshot wound in Somsri’s head also contradicted New’s story. “This was a huge wound on the head,” the pathologist says. “There was also a large gaping wound on the left side of the face and this suggests that at the time the deceased was shot the muzzle of the gun was in contact with the head.” San Diego assistant district attorney Kurt Mechals used this information to charge New with two murders: that of his first wife Somsri in 1973 and of his third wife Phyllis in 2004. Looking at Di Maio’s report he says: “Basically they were executed. The muzzle of the gun was right up to the head when the shot was fired. The most obvious similarities is both Somsri and Phyllis were the defendant’s wives. Both of them were shot in the home. Both were shot at nighttime in the home and both were shot in the back of the head. Not just in the back of the head but the trajectories were almost identical.” Mechals argued that New had the same motive to kill both wives: “He stood to gain and ultimately his stepson did get a substantial amount in life insurance from the 2004 murder of Phyllis,” he says. “It was the same back in 1973.” New was charged with both murders in April 2005. His trial started less than a year later in February 2006. A month after that he was found guilty of murdering both wives, 31 years apart. Four weeks after the verdict New was sentenced to serve two consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole.

THERE was also a large gaping wound on the left side of the face and this suggests that at the time the deceased was shot the muzzle of the gun was in contact with the head.

Outside the courthouse a group of women stood, dressed in purple and wearing Snoopy buttons saying, “We love you, Phyllis.” Phyllis used to go line dancing with them at The Wagon Wheel Salon, one of her favourite local haunts. Adrienne Hart and her friends were pleased with the verdict. She told waiting reporters: “We’re here to support her. We’re here to support the verdict. We’re happy with the verdict. It’s just a sad situation that something like that should have to happen. But I believe and I think we all believe that he was guilty and he is getting his just desserts now.” She went on to say, “Everybody was a friend to her. The first time she met you, you just felt like you were welcome. I think of her out there on the floor and she always would shine and you would see her out there smiling and happy and that’s how I’d like to remember her.” New appealed his sentencing in both 2008 and 2011 and both times had his appeal denied. In Sepetember 2019 he was killed by a fellow inmate, Mark Hudson, in a brawl, during which he sustained serious head injuries.

TWINNING h t i W ! y e n s i D

THESE twin sisters have gone viral for dress uping up as modern hipster versions of Disney characters – including Frozen Pricesses’ Anna and Elsa.

T

WINCREDIBLE sisters Danielle and Nicole Harry, both 25, got the quirky idea to start creating character outfits from their own vintage get-up after growing up loving watching Disney movies and dressing up in costumes. The identical sisters started selling clothes online as a hobby during university to clear out their wardrobes, before starting a vintage clothing business, Betty Berry, full time in 2019. Danielle and Nicole’s

millennial princess recreations include The Little Mermaid’s Ariel in turquoise flares and a purple velvet cami top, Beauty And The Beast’s Belle’s light blue pinafore reimagined as blue denim dungarees and Snow White in a red beret and mustard cord miniskirt. “We’ve always loved playing with these styles and reinventing them with our own touches, so we released a whole vintage collection based on Disney characters,” says

Danielle. “We use vintage wholesalers and handpick the stock to sell, and usually the character costume ideas come in later, but sometimes we find pieces that reminded us of certain characters. The Disney princess looks were centred on specific pieces we found – we spotted some turquoise flares that had mermaid vibes, and that’s how the Ariel look was created. costumes as well as hand-me-downs from our older siblings. We’d mix these looks together so one of us would be a superhero, like Spider-Man, while the other a princess. It’s nostalgic for us to reinvent these looks now and it still brings us as much joy.” Danielle and Nicole’s quirky princess re-imaginings have since gone viral on Instagram, with their Frozen-inspired pictures amassing over 43 000 likes from all over the world. Other Disney cartoon favourites they have recreated include Lilo and Stitch, and Winnie the Pooh and Piglet. The twins have also constructed outfits based on other popular fictional character outfits, such as the Cowardly Lion and the Tin Man from The Wizard Of Oz and the three Powerpuff girls. Their unique looks are centred around the beautiful vintage pieces they handpick at wholesalers to sell on their website – with the girls sometimes even bagging garments for their own wardrobes. “We’re really flattered by the love we get for our lookbooks on Instagram,” Danielle says. “We even get sent art inspired by our photos and it makes us so happy to inspire others. It’s different to cosplaying; the idea is if the characters dressed like us, and we’re inspired by their colour palettes and personalities. The princess Aurora-inspired outfit is one of my favourites – I think we captured her look well but in clothes we wear ourselves.” At the moment Danielle and Nicole are planning the looks they’re going to create throughout 2020. They are also working on launching their own fashion label inspired by vintage fashion, using sustainable fabrics. Danielle and Nicole are big advocates for vintage shopping as a way to become more environmentally friendly and avoid buying from fast fashion brands. “We’re against fast fashion and absolutely have to move away from it for the sake of the planet,” says Danielle. “We want to help change the way people shop little by little by introducing sustainable pieces into their everyday outfits.” In an homage to all things retro, the vintage-loving sisters’ company Betty Berry is even named after their grandmothers. The pair is currently planning ’90s-themed looks, specifically from iconic TV shows such as Sabrina The Teenage Witch. “We always get suggestions for what to do next online,” says Nicole. “Someone suggested that we create Friends-inspired outfits and so we just had to do Phoebe and her twin sister Ursula. My favourite looks are the first set of Frozen-inspired outfits we did because we found clothes in the perfect colours for Anna and Elsa.” Danielle adds, “It’s great working as twins, it’s easy because we have a connection and similar tastes so we can help each other out and put more love into our ideas – two minds are better than one!”

The Bachelor SA

HILE LEE THOMPSON and Gina Myers didn’t find everlasting love on the first season of The Bachelor South Africa, the experiment returns for a second season with Marc Buckner in line to date 22 women from around the country. The bachelor opens up about what he is looking for in a wife. “I’m looking for somebody who is mature and goalorientated, someone who wants to travel and is likeminded – but when I say that, I mean a go-getter, someone who wants to get out there, get me out of bed and who says ‘let’s go create something’,” Marc says. “That’s definitely the person who I would love to spend my time with, or potentially, hopefully, my life.” One of the reasons Lee and Gina’s relationship failed was because he lived in Cape Town and she lived in Johannesburg – but Marc isn’t worried about that kind of scenario. “I love Cape Town, but I’m very flexible,” he says. “I’ve lived and travelled in and to so many places, and I think that’s what helps me to enjoy life but also to grow. I’m open to it. I have lived in Durban previously. So who knows? It would be great to travel to those areas and to see what it’s like.”

DEMI LOVATO LANDS TALK SHOW

IT’S looking to be a promising year for Demi Lovato who, after last year’s relapse, is bouncing back hard. She wowed millions as she performed the American national anthem at the Super Bowl, debuted her brand-new single Anyone at the Grammys and has now announced that she has landed her very own talk show on the mobile short-form content platform, Quibi. The 10-episode programme has the working title Pillow Talk With Demi, and will see the star get candid on topics like activism, body positivity, sex, gender identity, relationships, social media and wellness, as well as the classic interviews with celebrity and expert guests. “I’ve always considered myself someone that speaks honestly about issues that face my generation,” Demi said in a statement announcing the show. “We’re excited to bring those frank conversations to a public forum, where people can have the opportunity to relate to the topics and guests, while finding room for laughter and learning.” While the premiere date is still being kept under wraps, many believe it will be available when Quibi launches on April 6.

GEORDIE SHORE fans may be in for a massive shock as one of the show’s biggest stars has revealed that she is ready to move on from the series. Chloe Ferry fast became one of the show’s most popular housemates after joining the series back in 2015. Since then, she’s fallen in love and had her heart broken twice, allowing the cameras to capture her raw emotions while going through the highs and the lows of romance. Geordie Shore helped Chloe nab her own cosmetics and sunglasses lines, as well as open her own beauty salon, but she is finally ready to say goodbye to the show that shot her to superstardom and spread her wings. Chloe broke the news during a Q&A on her social media pages where a fan asked her if she would be keen on having a show of her own. “I feel like I would love that a lot just because obviously I have been doing Geordie Shore a long time now,” Chloe responded. “I feel like I want to move onto something different. I can’t go out for much longer and get drunk – I am sick of it!”

see the crazy life I share with Tammy and our girls,” said Bradshaw of the new show. “I never know what will happen next around here between Rachel, Lacey and Erin... I thought winning four Super Bowls was hard, but it’s nothing compared to having three girls.” Terry is famous for his history-making 14 seasons as a quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers; he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and later began what would be a full-fledged second career as a television sports analyst, perhaps known best for cohosting FOX NFL Sunday.

THINGS are certainly tense in ’Skettiville with June Shannon having been forced to sell her home, getting arrested last year for cocaine possession and her relationship with boyfriend Geno Doak causing a rift in her family. And in true reality TV spirit, she’s giving viewers front-row tickets to the mess, now that a fourth season of Mama June: From Not To Hot has been announced. THERE’S a brand-new housewife joining the Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills gang – and it’s none other than Garcelle Beauvais. Garcelle promises a whole lot of drama when she joins the other girls in the series’ upcoming 10th season but, most importantly, is proud to be the show’s first black cast member. “It’s about time,” Garcelle says of her addition to the roster. “I mean, we’re in every zip code, are we not? So, hello!” She adds, “I’ve always watched the show, but to be in it and see all the crazy all around me? So fun!” Garcelle reveals that the series has been a lot of fun to shoot and that she’s had such an amazing time that she would certainly consider returning for season 11 if the opportunity presented itself. So, what can fans expect from her addition to the series? “I think the world is ready to see me in a different light,” she says. “As an actor, you’re always putting on a character. But this is me, it’s my boys, it’s my ex, it’s my new boo, it’s everything.” It sounds like the upcoming 10th season if going to be one of the hottest reality TV events of the year!

AST year saw HRVY (Harvey Leigh Cantwell) cement himself as one of the freshest faces in the international pop space. Having been involved in collaborations with NOTD and Jonas Blue, the 21-year-old English pop star is hard at work on his debut studio album and we caught up with him during his recent trip to South Africa where he opened up about the new videos he’s been shooting and more.

You visited South Africa in December last year. Give us an idea of what you were getting up to.

I shot two music videos all in three days when I was in South Africa in December. These two songs are songs I have been the most excited about and the music video concepts are really cool. There is such a diverse landscape here. We wanted to go somewhere that was hot during this time of year, and it’s cold in most places around Europe and America. We needed the sun and the dryness of this landscape. The location we were shooting on is incredible and I am really excited for everyone to see the final products.

Your career is booming right now, but where did your passion for music begin? My passion for music stems from my granddad and the Internet. I used to watch a lot of people covering other people’s songs on YouTube and I fell in love with covers because you can see how creative people can be. I’ve been singing ever since and now I am blessed enough to make music people around the world want to listen to.

What’s your growth been like since the Talk To Ya and Holiday EPs back in 2017?

That era feels like ages ago! As a person, I understand a lot more about the music industry now. I am so much more involved in the creative side of things now. When I was young, I didn’t have much of a creative input especially, when you hear big shots saying you should head in a certain direction. Now I am older and hopefully I’m wiser and I have a lot more input into my projects.

You’re working on your debut album now. Do you find there is more pressure when creating a project than working on individual singles?

One hundred percent. It’s really hard to release albums in today’s musical landscape when you’re a new artist – unless you’re someone like Billie Eilish and hit the jackpot. The streaming landscape is dominating the music industry and it’s a different world to how albums were previously released. Releasing songs one by one usually means more people hear them and it’s great because you get the music out and it’s super exciting for fans who know they get new music regularly. But I think it can also saturate the market and dilute a message. Everything is trial and error right now.

What was it like working with artists like NOTD and Jonas Blue?

With regard to I Miss Myself, we got sent the song and I really liked it and wanted to jump on the song. But my label told me that a Swedish group called NOTD had already taken it but asked if I would consider being a feature on it. They sent through their version of the song which was 50 times better than the original version I heard. I went out and met with them and we really vibed and the song came out really well. As for Jonas Blue, I have known him for years and I really wanted to work with him so we spent some time in the studio and Younger was born.

What inspired your new single Million Ways?

We wrote Million Ways in December 2018 and it was our last writing session of the year. I was so tired and I really wanted to get home and have Christmas off. A guy called JHart was

60

in the room, who has worked with the likes of Justin Bieber, and I was excited to have him in the session. I really liked the catchy direction we went with the song. Lyrically, we just wanted to have a good time and make it relatable. I love the Dirty Dancing feel of the music video as well.

What’s your relationship with social media been like?

Social media has been everything for me and put me where I am. Realistically, it helps you get seen, unless you’re doing a show, and it’s enabled me to speak to my fans and, in turn, get more fans and find out which countries I should visit and where I am wanted. It enables me to reach people around the world without travelling around the world. It really gives one a headstart and I am so grateful for the way it’s helped boost my career.

Anything to tell your South African fans out here?

I am going to come back hopefully this year. You guys have been very kind to me and I see all of your tweets and messages online and I have enjoyed staying in your amazing country and I can’t wait for you all to see the music videos we’ve created here.

SPOTLIGHT REVIEWS BY EL BROIDE FINE LINE HARRY STYLES

AFTER a self-titled debut album that seemed almost desperate to show fans that there’s more to him than teeny bop, Harry Styles has grown into his own, with his second studio album Fine Line evidence that the star has finally figured out who he is as an artist, and has accepted the idea that there are so many levels to him as a musician. It’s certainly one of the most refreshing pop records in recent times, and is far stronger ‒ especially lyrically ‒ than any of the star’s previous solo material. Codebreaker

Celeb Crossword...

CODEBREAKERS require inspired guesswork. They are crosswords without clues. Every leer of the alphabet is used (you might find it useful to cross out the leers located by the grid as you find them) and each leer has its own number. In this puzzle ‘22’ has the leer ‘M’ so a useful start is to insert ‘M’ in all the boxes that contain the number ‘22’. Vowels appear at least once in a word but leers such as and are few. ‘X’ ‘Z’

H Caroline Was NOT Fine! BY ANGELA BEKIARIS

ANOTHER Love Island suicide.

OURS after claiming to be ‘fine’, Love Island presenter Caroline Flack committed suicide. The fragile star – who felt that she could never recover from the court case she was struck in, and ‘didn’t know how to fix herself’ – was found dead on February 15. The 40-year-old had become one of Brit TV’s most sought-after names, co-hosting The X Factor and winning Strictly Come Dancing in 2014, and in the past had been romantically linked to One Direction’s Harry Styles, and even Prince Harry, but she took her life three weeks before she was due in court for an assault case; a case her management called a ‘show trial’ for an alleged assault on her boyfriend. The personality had stepped down from her position on the reality show after she was accused of attacking boyfriend Lewis Burton, and while she was meant to appear in court on March 4, she spent Valentine’s Day ‘terrified and frightened’, with suicidal thoughts that she put into action. Flack’s best friend, Lou Teasdale, had volunteered to be at her side after family and friends had grown increasingly concerned about Flack’s welfare. However, the Love Island star convinced her friend that she was fine, and Lou felt it was safe to step out. Within minutes of that Caroline took her own life. When Lou found she couldn’t get back into the flat, she called Flack’s father Ian who gained entry and found the star’s body. A source close to the family says, “[Lou] was absolutely brilliant with her. On Saturday morning Caroline insisted she was fine and persuaded her friend to go home. No one is blaming Lou for a second. She couldn't have done any more. She is understandably distraught. It is so awful for her.” As for the assault case in question, according to Burton, Flack hit him with a lamp at her former home in Islington in December and as part of her bail conditions the pair was banned from contacting each other. A friend of the star’s says she was ‘humiliated’ and ‘couldn’t see a way out’ as she spent

Valentine’s Day apart from the boyfriend she was accused of attacking. As well as being banned from contacting the former tennis player and model, she also had to stand down from her £4-million (R80-million) Love Island job over the incident. Sources reveal that hours before her death she had Instagrammed Valentine’s day snaps of herself with her dog Ruby looking happy and healthy – but with no words attached. “She was on her own. She couldn’t take it anymore. Her family are devastated,” says a friends, while another adds, “Caroline couldn’t bear the thought of going through the court case. She felt her career would never recover from this – and she felt humiliated in front of the world. In the end she just couldn’t see a way out. She didn’t know how to fix herself.” Flack’s management team are now slamming the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) for pursuing a ‘show trial’ against the ex-Love Island presenter. According to the Daily Mail, the team described her as ‘vulnerable’ and criticised the CPS for pushing ahead with the case despite Burton’s saying he did not want to press charges. ITV and Love Island’s producers will now come under scrutiny for the decision of her stepping down, and what support they gave her, say sources, who add that reality shows have been warned by Ofcom [the UK government-approved regulatory and competition authority for the broadcasting industries] that they have a duty of care towards their stars. Flack was struggling with her mental health and using anti-depressants before her death. Her death has led to calls for the ITV2 flagship show to be axed; she is the third person connected to the production to have killed themselves, following contestants Mike Thalassitis and Sophie Gradon, who also took their own lives. Love Island presenter Laura Whitmore led tributes to Flack after the news and posted on Twitter, “I’m trying to find the words but I can’t,” next to a broken heart emoji, as well as a poem about loss. Former contestants Wes Nelson, Chris Hughes and Molly-Mae Hague also paid their respects to the star, while Piers Morgan remembered her as a ‘fun, bright and sparky person’.

REAL LIFE THIS 215kg woman opens up about how she is set to marry the man who encourages her to eat 10 000 calories a day.

was initially looking for a feeder and someone who loves bigger women, but I never expected to find a fiancé. It was really love at first sight and initially we were more interested in getting to know each other than we were in me gaining weight, so we didn’t start our feeder and feedee relationship until roughly one month later. On a normal day I eat 5 000 calories, but on a ‘stuffing’ day, which we do twice a week, I can eat up to 10 000 calories. On a stuffing day Eric will take me to a buffet and will order me different foods throughout the day to see my stomach swell – and whilst I’m eating he’ll rub my belly and give me words of encouragement. ‘NORMAL DAY’ DIET: BREAKFAST – Coffee, fruit and two bagels LUNCH – Large pizza, chicken wings DINNER – Large pasta dish SNACKS – Fruit juice, fizzy drinks, energy drinks, chocolate, crisps ‘STUFFING DAY’ DIET: BREAKFAST – Coffee, fruit, two bagels LUNCH – All you can eat lunch buffet DINNER – Two large pizzas, eight chicken wings, stuffed cheese bread SNACKS – Brownie, fizzy drinks, crisps, chips

We have completely different bodies ̶ Eric is 1.85m and 85kg; meanwhile I’m 1.67m and 215kg – but he finds my belly sexy. Our goal is for me to reach 275kg and we are hoping that, alongside getting married this year, that weight will be reached.” Despite being obese, Jessica claims that she is in fact ‘healthy’ and takes measures to ensure she is not putting herself at risk. “I have been told I’m fat and unhealthy my entire life from friends and strangers. But every doctor I’ve ever visited is shocked about Jessica and Eric how healthy I truly am – no health issues at all,” she says. “Blood pressure, cholesterol, and sugar all well within healthy ranges – I just happen to be fat. It does aggravate me that people always associate fat with unhealthy because that is not always the case. I walk every day, I eat lots of fruits and veg and I take multivitamins.” Alongside having set days to show their love for the feeder community, Jessica admits that they include food in their everyday relationship and even monumental events. “I have a culinary arts degree so I absolutely love to cook and spend a lot of time in Just one month later the happy the kitchen making amazing meals for us both. couple were having regular ‘stuffing’ “We also like to incorporate food into our sex life days – which see Jessica munch up from time to time as it includes a new level of to 10 000 calories a day with Eric’s intimacy and something we both love into that encouragement. part of our life.
