CITY AIRPORT SUPPORTS ‘GIANT’ LEAP FOR LOCAL EDUCATION Partnership with Belfast Giants to deliver healthy living programme in Knocknagoney Primary School
@BelfastCity_Air PICTURED:
Taking a trip out on the ice at the SSE Arena to launch the scheme are Belfast Giant players Adam Keefe and Mitch Ganzak, along with Michelle Hatfield from the airport, Kayla Thomson and Ayden Paterson from Knocknagoney Primary School.
undreds of Greater Belfast primary schoolchildren are set to benefit from an education programme focused on healthy eating and living an active lifestyle, thanks to an exciting new partnership between George Best Belfast City Airport and the Belfast Giants. Entitled ‘Giant Fliers’, the initiative will see Belfast Giants players visiting four primary schools across the city once a week for four weeks to deliver the programme to key stage two pupils. The primary schools involved are Seaview, St Malachy’s, Knocknagoney and St Kevin’s. A key part
H
of the scheme will provide the P5-7 pupils with the opportunity to watch their new ‘teachers’ in action by attending a Belfast Giants home match at the Odyssey Arena. The programme is the latest to receive support from Belfast City Airport’s Community Fund which, now in its seventh year, has provided over £250,000 of financial support to more than 100 local community projects and groups. Michelle Hatfield, Director of Human Resources and Corporate Responsibility at Belfast City Airport, said: “The importance to young people of eating
healthily and living an active lifestyle cannot be overstated and helping to facilitate young people to do this is one of the key aims of the airport’s Community Fund. “The Belfast Giants have made a hugely positive contribution to the local community since they arrived in 2000 and we are delighted to partner with them for the Giant Fliers programme, which will not only enrich the children’s education, but help to instil healthy eating and living habits at an early age. “We look forward to seeing the children getting involved and hearing how
they take on board the messages being delivered by the players. The scheme will appeal to children who love sport and already exercise, as well as to those who maybe don’t exercise enough.” Giant Fliers was launched at the SSE Arena recently, with pupils from all four schools in attendance. The first school visit is set to take place this month. Each month will see the programme visit an individual school, with the first week bringing the ‘Healthy Eating’ message to the young people and the next three weeks focusing on the ‘Active Lifestyle’ message.

HUB CLUB March 2016
SAY HELLO To The Holywood Hub olywood is fortunate in having a website where the organizations of the town can present themselves to the public. The Holywood Hub (www.holywoodhub.org) provides a onestop site for finding out what is going on in the town. It is free of charge, and exists for sporting, educational and other voluntary organizations as well as businesses. Any organization connected to Holywood can have its details listed on the site. Once joined up, they can post up news and notices of future events taking place in the town. These events are also posted up on a Facebook page, “Holywood Calendar and Hub”. The site reflects the liveliness and diversity of life in a small town. Events currently advertised include a lecture on family history, a course in tai chi by international teachers and information about dementia-friendly church services. The
H
site aspires to include on the Hub most of the organizations of Holywood, cafes, and retailers, churches and sports clubs, solicitors and dentists. Only last week, a fresh contributor to the site was a wholly new company, “LadyGeekGeek Website Construction”. To join up, organizations can send a message via the site’s Contacts page and then fill in a short questionnaire, allowing them to become Contributors. Details of the organizations are then quickly posted up on the site. Contributors are then free to put up news and forthcoming events. The site was set up last summer through a collaboration between Ardmore Advertising, MacCauley and Richie Solicitors and Holywood Shared Town. Since then, it has gone from strength to strength. Nearly fifty organizations are listed and these put up regular postings of news and events.

veryone has it in them to be a Samaritans volunteer. To touch another person’s life when it really matters, either by giving them the space to talk through how they are feeling or by helping to keep the charity’s branches running so the service can be offered by others. Bangor and North Down Branch of Samaritans is making a plea to members of the local community, to sign up to support people who might not have anywhere else to turn. If you have just a few spare hours
E
a week they would like to hear from you. Based on Dufferin Avenue the Bangor and North Down Branch currently has 60 volunteers and is always looking to recruit more people to ensure the branch can continue to offer its services to the local community. Samaritans offers round-the-clock emotional support for anyone struggling to cope. The confidential service is offered by phone, email, text, letter and face-to-face. Deirdre Walsh, Director said: “We are currently beginning a new
recruitment exercise with the aim of recruiting more listening volunteers to answer calls from people who are struggling to cope. However, there are a wide range of other roles available in the branch to suit people with different skills. We need people with administrative and IT skills and those who can organise fundraising and outreach activities, to name a few. If you think that volunteering with Samaritans might be for you, why don’t you come along to one of our Information/Selection
event being held in 92 Dufferin Avenue, Bangor on Saturday 12th March at 10.00 am”? New volunteer Caroline said: “Choosing to volunteer with Samaritans has been a brilliant opportunity for me. I received extensive training, ongoing support and really valued having a mentor to guide me. “It’s an amazing opportunity for personal development and growth too, as, you discover things about yourself, as a Samaritan, that you weren’t previously aware of”.

APPLAUDING The Players
PICTURED:

Our community is fortunate to have a number of flourishing amateur dramatic societies. One such is the Helen’s Bay Players who will shortly celebrate their golden anniversary. While the Players have supplied a varied diet of entertainment for the past 49 years, their more customary fare is now comedies and farces. any LOOP readers will have enjoyed their production this January of Inspector Drake’s Last Case, which attracted excellent audiences. One expert critic, who has sat through many an amateur production, wrote that the Players ‘gave their audiences much laughter and enjoyment … [in] another one of the silliest plays I have seen.’ The next production, again in St John’s Church Hall, Fort Road, Helen’s Bay, from Thursday 17
M
to Saturday 19 March, is Nobody’s Perfect written by Simon Williams. This well-written and highly entertaining play tells the story of Leonard who tries to break into writing by entering a female-only romantic fiction competition. His problems start when he wins, but that is just the beginning. He has his wayward father and daughter to deal with as well. A great evening’s entertainment is once again assured. Tickets (£8 adult, £5 under 18) can be
purchased in advance from Square Cut in Station Square, Helen’s Bay, or through the Arts and North Down Council Visitor Information Centre (or the Council website), or at the door on the night. Last year, the Players’ high standard was recognised in their winning the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) award for best drama in the Wales and Ireland region, for their production of Searching for Doctor Branowicz.
(The photograph pictures current Players chairman David Marshall with the award, together with NODA President Chris Ingram and Sheelagh Hobart, the regional representative for Ireland, at a NODA-organised seminar on 30 January this year.) The Helen’s Bay Players would be delighted to hear from anyone with an interest in joining. More information can be found on Facebook, at http:// www.facebook.com/ TheHelensBayPlayers.

GOING LOCO FOR COCO
VITA COCO COCONUT OIL IS AN ALL-PURPOSE WONDER POT. THE ULTIMATE COOKING INGREDIENT, BEAUTY SECRET YOU NEED TO KNOW AND ONE OF THE BEST NATURAL ENERGY SUPPLEMENTS OUT THERE, COCONUT OIL IS ORGANIC, 100% RAW AND COLD-PRESSED (WITH ALL OF ITS NATURAL GOODNESS).
ita Coconut Oil has partnered with Irish food blogging sensation Indy Power of ‘The Little Green Spoon’ to create a delicious healthy recipe to help kick start your healthy eating regime this year. The very simple Cranberry Pistachio Breakfast Squares recipe makes sixteen mouth-watering squares, using the musthave product of 2016, Vita Coco Coconut Oil. Speak-
V
ing about using coconut oil in her recipes, blogger Indy Powersays: “I love using Vita Coco coconut oil in all my cooking, for both sweet and savoury dishes. It has so many amazing health benefits and can be used in so many ways - I use it on my hair, skin and nails as well as in my food! Its antimicrobial properties are great for digestion and it helps to prevent high cholesterol and high blood
pressure as well as supporting the healthy functioning of our immune system and thyroid. It's so easy to cook with because of its lovely subtle taste, which doesn’t over-power other flavours and because it tolerates high temperatures it’s the perfect substitute for butter and other oils when baking."The Little Green Spoon’s Cranberry Pistachio Breakfast Squares are made using honey, almond
butter, deshelled pistachio, gluten free oats, desiccated coconut, dried cranberries, coarse salt and of course Vita Coco Coconut Oil which is organic, 100% raw, extra virgin and cold pressed. These breakfast squares are a perfect option for on-the-go snacking during your commute or after a morning workout, providing you with long-lasting energy throughout your morning!
Cranberry Pistachio Breakfast Squares 4 Tablespoons of Vita Coco Coconut Oil 3 Tablespoons of Maple Syrup/Honey 4 Tablespoons of Almond Butter 1/2 Cup of Pistachios, Deshelled (75g) 1 Cup of Gluten Free Oats (100g) 1/4 Cup of Desiccated Coconut (20g) 1/2 Cup of Dried Cranberries (75g) Pinch of Coarse Salt
Preheat the oven to 180 C. Roughly chop the pistachios and add them to a baking sheet with the gluten free oats. Bake them at 180’C for about 8 minutes until lightly toasted, tossing once in the middle. While they’re cooking, roughly chop the dried cranberries and then add them to your food processor with the desiccated coconut. Add in the toasted pistachios and oats.
Add the Vita Coco coconut oil, almond butter, maple syrup and salt to a small saucepan on medium heat and whisk until smooth. When the mixture is completely melted, add it to the food processor and blend until you have a crumbly paste. Press the mixture tightly into a small baking tin lined with parchment paper. Pop it in the fridge for about an hour to set. Slice into squares and serve.
JAZZ UP YOUR DETOX WITH 100% NATURAL COCONUT WATER FROM VITA COCO
Following a healthy diet needn’t be difficult, dull or tasteless. Cue Vita Coco 100% Natural Coconut Water -a stupidly simple (and tasty) detox ingredient. Full of naturally occurring potassium and essential electrolytes with no colourings, preservatives or flavourings and never produced from concentrate, Vita Coco 100% Natural Coconut Water is simple - it’s water, from a coconut, in a carton. That’s it. Coconut water has long been a staple in tropical diets around the globe and is great on its own as an on-the-go hydrator, but is also a fantastic companion for healthy juices and smoothies. Whether you’re sipping them poolside from a chilled glass or pouring into a handy flask for the commute, these recipes are sure to help keep healthy hydration exciting throughout the month.

HEALTh BEAUTY WELLBEING
BEAUTY & THE C WORD
This month is Ovarian Cancer Awareness month. 4 months ago all I could have told you about OC was that I had seen the City Hall lit up in teal, I had read of Una Crudden’s brave fight and her passion to raise awareness for something called ‘the silent killer’ but I didn’t know how it would feel to hear my Mum had been diagnosed with this very thing. Nothing is going to make dealing with this news less painful or chemotherapy less difficult. Indeed losing your hair is more emotional than I could ever have imagined…and it wasn’t even happening to me! But peppered throughout all the hard times have been special, relaxed, calm moments where I’ve been able to put my beauty skills to practice.
DEALING WITH CHEMOTHERAPY SKIN Skin will change. We kept things very simple, as the skin can become more sensitive and dry. To avoid this Mum has been using Yon-Ka Lait Nettoyant cleanser and Yon-Ka Nutri Defence moisturiser. Everything we are doing is to sooth, hydrate, nourish and replenish. For her body, an emollient cream such as E45 is comforting and will relieve dry, itchy skin.
NAILS They can become brittle, flaky and ridged. My top tips: • Use nail-strengthening cream, hand cream and cuticle oil (Dadi Oil is incredible) • Use an emery board instead of cutting your nails. • Wear gloves when doing chores. • Don’t use false nails. Nails can also become discoloured. Victoria Derbyshire on her blog recommended painting them to prevent/ disguise this. So far this trick has worked well! Jam n’ Jelly is mum’s fave colour and never fails to lift her spirits!
MAKE UP The tone of your skin may also change during treatment, becoming redder or blotchy. This may mean you need to change your foundation. I love Glow Time BB cream by Jane Iredale a wonderful foundation, great coverage and super comfortable for all day wear. Brows - Along with hair loss comes eyebrows thinning/disappearing. Mum has found a pencil the easiest - though we did experiment with a number of different products. The photo shows a before and after of the Sketch-a-Brow pencil from Senna

At DHMB we are going to be training on adapting our beauty treatments for clients going though cancer treatment. Please know if you are on this journey or know someone who is - DHMB will look after you. We know it’s important that you don’t come into contact with sickness/ colds/flu, we know you need top tips and advice. We will care for you and give you little moments of peace. Time out - to stop thinking about the big picture and to focus on you and you are very, very special. 7 S tat i on S qu a r e H e le n ’s Bay 02 8 91 85 2 85 9 deborahharperbeauty.co.uk

INDEPENDENCE In Later Life
ABOUT AGE NI Age NI is the leading charity for older people in Northern Ireland. The charity was formed as the result of the merger between Age Concern and Help the Aged in 2009. Our vision is a world where everyone can love later life. Our society is ageing. More than 350,000 older people live here today, and there are more people over the age of 50 than under the age of 19. In the next twenty years, the number of people over 50 will increase by more than 30%. As we grow older we face new challenges, and may face difficult issues like illness, poverty or loneliness. We still want to laugh, love and be needed. We want to stay independent and keep doing the things we love. We all want a fulfilling later life.
www.ageni.org The Age NI Personal Alarm service provides independence when you want it and help when you need it. Dame Mary Peters is one of more than 8,000 people in NI who have the service installed at home. eople have this idea that a personal alarm is something that much older people use’, says Mary. They think ‘that’s not for me’ or ‘I’m too young to think about things like that’. My friends have all said that I’m not old enough for a personal alarm! I’m very realistic though and I think that it’s important to plan for all eventualities, if you can.’
P
‘I’ve thought about occasions before, when I’ve had a fall outside or slipped on the stairs. On those occasions I was lucky – I didn’t do myself much damage, but I could have. To be frank, if I fell and hurt myself at home I could be lying there for days before someone might find me. It’s something I felt that I needed to acknowledge and take positive steps
Age NI believes that living longer should be celebrated and that those who need help should be supported. We exist to support more people to love later life now and in the future. We want to make people think differently about what it means to get older, because age affects us all in different ways.
to prevent. I want to make sure that I continue to feel confident at home as I grow older. ‘So, I wear it always when I’m at home, around my neck. It’s connected to the call centre which is on hand 24 hours a day and I test it regularly. Thinking about our independence and the possibility of losing it is a little like thinking about writing a will. Many of us
don’t like to think about it or talk about it. But it’s important that we do. I feel fit and independent right now, but the day might come when I need the reassurance that my personal alarm gives me.’ Find out more at www. ageni.org/alarms or call 0808 100 4545. Age NI benefits from the sale of personal alarms.

Can you do the Cobra? Or the Butterfly? How about the Busy Bee? No they are not random dance moves – but yoga poses! PLAYOGA is about having fun with yoga through PLAY and IMAGINATION; engaging in physical activity; being focused on creating a story and learning.
YOGA ENGAGES CHILDREN’S NATURAL, BOUNDLESS ENERGY AND PROVIDES LOTS BENEFITS: BOOSTS CONFIDENCE ENHANCES CONCENTRATION & FOCUS INCREASES FLEXIBILITY & BALANCE HELPS FOR RELAXATION BUILDS BODY AWARENESS “We’ve been doing tree pose at home”, Robbie aged 3. “We used our ‘balloon breathing’ to calm down from a tantrum – and it worked!”, Mum Janice “My 3 year old son loves Playoga. He is learning all the basics of yoga in a really fun and energetic way.”, Mum Amberlea
urrently classes are aimed at pre-schoolers - age 2 ½ - 5 years, along with the parent or guardian, so yes - the ‘big people’ get involved too! We use storytelling, games, play, song and dance to create fun yoga poses & promote mindfulness. ‘Having practised yoga for nearly 20 years’, says Playoga instructor Jill, ‘I decided to learn more about yoga for children. The benefits for adults are great – fitness, calming, flexibility, strength
C
– so I knew that it would be amazing for children. The RainBow Kids course that teach kids yoga was so much fun! So many yoga poses are based on animals and their movements, so it lends itself so well creating amazing adventures to go on! So far this term we’ve been to the yoga jungle and on a bear hunt!’ Seeing the little ones all chilled at the very end of class is just wonderful. And even better when you hear that they use their new techniques a home:’

REST & Regeneration
I’m sitting in a coffee shop in Vienna pondering Loop Mag and which coming occasion I should concentrate on in March. I’m wondering cunningly which is the most marketable... which might attract the most custom...
here’s so much happening this month; Mother’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Suddenly there are snowdrops in next door’s garden and it’s light at teatime. Simultaneously I’m thinking I should really go out and walk around this wonderful, cultural city full of palaces and gardens instead of cozyin’ up over a dainty pot of tea. But it’s so cold out there and I remember I’m on holiday and decide to just stay here drinking tea until April
T
or May. I try to imagine how it would be if that were possible or acceptable... it seems decadent not to be busy rushing at life head-on. Nature is busy as Spring draws forth, I think, but then again she’s blissfully unaware of planned programmes and hectic deadlines. She unfolds and lets happen. Can we find a way to be like her...to get stuff done without actually doing it? To enjoy the rush of life without feeling buffeted and jaded by it?
Alison Stevenson
There’s the question. What a big one. Too big for today. Except to say that it’s a subject dear to the heart and always on the mind in the massage room... people come, lie down and let it happen. ..muscles are warmed and relaxed. Blood circulation is regulated. Waste products are moved along. The mind follows and becomes still. The PERSON lets the BODY do the work. The lovely G and I talk about the tennis ball exercises she has to do to keep her feet and legs

in tone to minimise her pain. These are tangible and important, we’re agreed. But how nice for these to be done FOR her occasionally; she leaves the massage room scented with marjoram, feeling relaxed and recharged. This is only one example of being active in a passive, stress-free sort of way as can be seen in the natural world. We need to make plans and decisions unlike mother Nature but we also need to make space for rest and regeneration.
