Hans Sloane Chocolate & Fine Food Festival Returns Sweeter Than Ever! Thousands of chocolate lovers and foodies from across the island of Ireland and beyond are expected to descend again this year on the picturesque village of Killyleagh in County Down to celebrate the 2018 Finnebrogue Artisan Hans Sloane Chocolate & Fine Food Festival, 14th – 16th September.

S

ponsored by artisan producer Finnebrogue, based in nearby Downpatrick and famous for their outstanding quality wagyu beef, recently-launched Naked Bacon, and artisan sausages, this year’s festival will also continue to grow legacy of raising valuable funds for the Cancer Fund for Children, having already raised £61,000 for the charity over previous years. The festival was founded in

2010 to celebrate Killyleagh’s most famous son, Hans Sloane, who was born in the village in 1660 and later became one of the most famous men of his time, mainly because of his development of milk chocolate. The biennial festival has grown in strength and popularity and is regarded as one of the principal events of its type across the UK and Ireland and a major highlight of the summer calendar for locals in Killyleagh and

surrounding areas. The festival will kick off on Friday 14th September with the Chocolate Ball which will take place in the exquisite grounds of Killyleagh Castle, one of Ireland’s longestinhabited castles. Guests can expect a mouth-watering chocolate inspired menu prepared and designed by Chef Simon Dougan of Yellow Door and world-class entertainment following dinner, allowing guests to dance the night away in a stunning marquee against the backdrop of Killyleagh Castle. The Hans Sloane Chocolate & Fine Food Festival will continue on Saturday 15th & Sunday 16th September, where guests will be spoiled for choice with two days of family fun with activities and entertainment for all ages and a vast range of chocolatiers’ displays, market stalls and tasting and purchasing options for a memorable weekend of fun. Highlighting the long-standing partnership with Cancer Fund for Children, Gillian Creevy, Chief Executive, Cancer Fund for Children said “We’re delighted to continue our partnership with the Hans Sloane Chocolate & Fine Food Festival and event sponsor Finnebrogue. At Cancer Fund for Children we nurture, connect and empower children and families whose lives have been impacted by cancer so they feel strengthened and equipped to deal with whatever the future may hold. The young people and families we support are at the heart of everything we do. We are thrilled to be involved in such a positive family-friendly event again in 2018.” For more information visit www.hanssloane.com

Universal Credit begins in Holywood Area Universal Credit will be introduced in the Holywood area from Wednesday 05 September 2018.

U

niversal Credit replaces six existing benefits with one and is for people of working age (18 - state pension age). It is initially for new claimants in the local area. People in the Holywood area already claiming the existing benefits will not be affected until 2019, unless their circumstances change. Universal Credit will also begin in the Ballynahinch area from the same date. It has already been rolled out across a number of other areas of Northern Ireland. David Sales, Universal Credit Programme Director, explained: “Universal Credit is a significant change to how benefits are claimed. In order to ensure claimants get the support they need, it is being introduced gradually across Northern

Ireland from September 2017. This means we have been able to closely manage and learn from the rollout to date.” As Universal Credit replaces claims for multiple benefits with a single claim, it is simpler to claim and more flexible. It aims to support people into work and to earn more without losing their benefits, while ensuring those who cannot work continue to receive the financial support they need. Claims are made online, with digital support available for those who may need it. David Sales continued: “Our local staff have undertaken extensive training in preparation for Universal Credit. As it is claimed online, we have also upgraded local offices to provide a digital zone with

access to PCs and free Wi-Fi. Staff are available to guide new claimants through the process. So far, the vast majority of people have been able to make their online claim without needing additional assistance from our staff.” Universal Credit replaces Jobseeker’s Allowance (income based), Employment Support Allowance (income-related), Income Support, Housing Benefit (rental), Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credits for people aged over 18 and under State Pension age. Existing claimants will transfer to Universal Credit between July 2019 and March 2022. Some claimants will naturally move to Universal Credit earlier, where their circumstances have changed.

Further information on Universal Credit and full details of the rollout are available on the nidirect website https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/universalcredit

Advice Hunt Solicitors have their annual Wills month coming up with a half price offer

confident are able and willing to accept the role. Q. Where should I keep my Will?

Hunt Solicitors

Wills Month is Back This October! Keeping your Will up to date is a vital part of keeping your affairs in order. Whether you need to make your first Will or it’s time to change an existing Will here are some answers to frequently asked questions we would get from clients. Q. What happens if I die and don’t have a Will? A. If you die without a Will the law decides how your property is divided. This is known as dying ‘Intestate’. Dying without a Will takes away your control to decide who inherits from your Estate and also who controls the process. It is possible that someone who you wouldn’t want to inherit could take all or part of your Estate. It can also make the administration process more costly and take more time to be finalised. Leaving a valid Will is the only way to make your wishes on death known.

Q. Do I need to inform my Executor that I have appointed them in my Will? A. Although it is not necessary for you to inform your Executor of your decision to appoint them it is advisable to discuss it with them in advance. This will allow them to perhaps investigate the duties that would be involved in the administration process and takes away any surprise in the event they only discover their appointment on your death. An Executor cannot be forced to act in the role so it is always advisable to appoint a person or persons who you are

A. Most Solicitors offer to store Wills at little or no charge to their clients. These are held in safekeeping by your Solicitor under strict conditions and are held by them for various legal reasons. If you wish to store your Will personally you must ensure it is kept safe and nothing is attached to it and it cannot be damaged. Wills that are marked or damaged in some way could call into question their validity and make it more difficult to administer your Estate. Allowing your Solicitor to hold it on your behalf in safekeeping and only storing a copy of it with your personal possessions reduces the risks of it becoming damaged or even worse lost. These are just a small number of queries we are asked on a regular basis and we would always advise that having a professionally drafted Will is the best course of action. Contact us today to arrange an initial consultation. We can discuss your personal circumstances and draft a Will that suits your needs. It’s Back A hugely popular play is back on the stage. We have the details

On Stage

‘Both Sides’ Returns It’s back! Both Sides, Jane Coyle’s double-sided play, which charmed audiences across Northern Ireland in autumn 2017, has been invited to two picturesque venues in September.

O

n Saturday 15 September, it will be performed at Lisburn’s Penny Square Market in a canopied, candlelit space in the city’s historic quarter. On Wednesday 19 September, as part of the Aspects Literature Festival, the venue will be the café of North Down Museum in the grounds of Bangor Castle. Inspired by the works of Samuel Beckett, the play comprises two interlocking monologues. The first Me Here, Me is set in Paris, the second Before Before in Nice. Paris-based actress Hannah Coyle plays Stella, a

solitary young woman watching the life of the street unfold from a table in a Paris café. She senses that each passer-by has a troubling story. She has one too and fears that it is about to be revealed. Popular Belfast actress Libby Smyth plays Estelle, a glamorous middle-aged woman seated at a bar in the old town of Nice. She looks back ruefully on a turbulent, bohemian life, which has brought her joy, adventure and indescribable loss. Who are these women? What is their connection? The script of Me Here, Me was first read by Hannah Coyle in

the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris during the inaugural Beckett Paris Festival in March 2016. It was produced for the 2016 Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival and performed later that year at the Paris Fringe. It was subsequently joined by a companion piece Before Before to form Both Sides, which was premiered at the 2017 Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival and toured Northern Ireland in autumn 2017. The production is presented in association with Shelter NI, the charity which supports homeless people.

Drizzle in a little maple syrup if you think the fruit is too tart. 2. Transfer to a baking dish. 3. Put all the crumble ingredients in a medium-sized bowl and mix together, then pat it on top of the apple and berry mix. 4. Bake in the oven for 50 minutes. Finish it under the grill for the last few minutes to crisp it up. It will be piping hot, so I let it stand for 10 minutes before serving. 5. When the coconut cream hits the heat of the crumble it will melt straight away, so keep it chilled in the fridge and allow people to help themselves to keep it cool until the last minute.

PACKING UP FOR SUMMER ADVENTURE

Greyabbey Corporal Corey Murphy (16) from Bangor

Echinville Distillery North Down teenagers have been making the most of their school holidays, packing outdoor adventure, sport and fun into a ten day annual Cadet Camp in England.

W

hile many of their mates are stuck at home complaining about being bored, or are spending their leisure time in front of computer screens, these intrepid teens have been tackling a vast range of mind- and bodystretching outdoor activities. Colonel Keith Dowell, Commandant of 2nd (Northern Ireland) Battalion Army Cadet Force, says, “Annual Camp is a traditional highpoint of our year, and for some very good reasons. As far as the Cadets are concerned, it’s all about carefree fun and adventure spent in the company of friends, while,

for parents, it’s a chance to give their children an action-packed and fully supervised summer experience without breaking the bank. “Every parent knows how difficult and expensive it can be to fill the kids’ school holidays with challenging fun activities. Cadet life opens the door to all sorts of opportunities and everything is either totally free or deliberately low in cost ... we even provide our members with free uniforms and we try to keep the camp experience at under a hundred pounds so that it is affordable for most families! “Importantly, parents know that

their kids are well supervised by expert Adult Leaders who will make sure that everyone is involved in every activity. They know the Cadet movement is as much committed to building confidence and friendships as it is to building skills. “Our Cadets from Holywood and Bangor embraced every opportunity brought to them at this year’s Summer Camp, held at Strensall, near York, with great good humour and seemingly boundless energy. Now, following a Summer packed with challenge and achievement, they’ll be turning their attention to their annual new membership campaign and I am sure they will all become highly persuasive recruiters as they invite local teenagers to come along and see what Cadet life has to offer.”

On Your Marks Still time to get involved in the upcoming 10k run in Bangor

Runners of all abilities are being encouraged to enter this year’s Bangor 10K, in association with George Best Belfast City Airport, taking place on September 29th 2018. On Track

Final Call To Enter Bangor 10K The Bangor 10K has been awarded Championship status by Athletics NI for the first time following last year’s record-breaking race which saw 1,200 runners take part.

W

ith a total prize fund of nearly £3,500, the race has previously attracted international athletes and Olympians such as Paul Pollock and National Marathon Champion, Laura Graham. Tony Wall, Chairman of the North Down Athletic Association, commented: “Last year’s event was record-breaking, and our Championship status will ensure this year’s race is even bigger and better. “As the route is fairly flat, it is suitable for runners of a range of abilities. Places are filling up fast so we would encourage those interested to register as soon as possible. It’s all for a good cause as we will be donating a percentage of the proceeds to Open House Festival, a charity close to home

which is dedicated to saving the old Bangor Courthouse and renovating it into a community facility and festival base. It is tremendous to have Belfast City Airport on board as the headline sponsor for another year and some of the team will even be supporting us by taking part!” Participants can register online until the 23rd September 2018 with late/paper entries being accepted until the morning of the race, which begins at 11am. Those who register online will have the option of selecting their runner number and will be able to take advantage of cheaper rates - £15/affiliated and £17/unaffiliated. Michelle Hatfield, Director of Corporate Services at Belfast City Airport, added:

“Belfast City Airport is committed to making a positive impact on the community and it is wonderful to once again partner with North Down Athletic Club for the Bangor 10k. There is always a fantastic atmosphere with big crowds coming out to cheer on the participants. We are dedicated to giving back to the community and supporting local clubs is just one of the ways in which we do this. Through our Community Fund, we have helped over 150 organisations based in Greater Belfast totalling over £350,000. We encourage our staff to volunteer and get involved when they can, enriching the area for the future. “On behalf of the airport, I would like to wish the best of luck to all those participating.”

Help at Hand Local advice and treatment to resolve infestations and prevent re-infestations

Look Out for Head Lice By Liam Burns MPS Burns Pharmacy 100 Abbey Ring Tel 028 9042 3639

Advice

We are now in September which means the kids are back to school. Unfortunately this also means an increase in the prevalence of head lice...

A

t Burns Pharmacy in Holywood we are happy to provide advice and treatment to resolve infestations and prevent re-infestations. Head lice is most commonly found in schoolchildren aged between 4-11 years but anyone can catch them. Lice are highly contagious and can spread quickly from person to person. They can’t fly, jump or swim and they mainly spread by climbing from the hair of an infested person to the hair of someone else during head to head contact. They can also, however, spread as a result of sharing items such as combs, brushes and hats. A head lice infestation is not the result of dirty hair or poor hygiene. All

types of hair can be affected, regardless of length or condition. Head lice are tiny grey-brown wingless insects which live by sucking blood from the scalp. Their eggs are known as ‘nits’ and these are laid and glued to the base of hair. Head Lice are frequently associated with an itchy scalp. Itching is not caused by the lice biting the scalp but by an allergic reaction to the lice. Not everyone with a head lice infestation will experience an itchy scalp, however, as not everyone is allergic to head lice. In some instances, therefore, it can take some time to notice a head lice infestation. The best method for detecting an infestation is wet combing

using a fine toothed comb available from your local pharmacy. There are three main ways of treating head lice : insecticides, Dimethicone (a silicone -based lotion) or wet combing (a nonchemical treatment). In Burns Pharmacy we will be happy to provide advice and explain the advantages and disadvantages of each method. We can also provide treatment and detection combs for patients under the Minor Ailments Scheme (i.e. provide these on prescription and free of charge, without the need to visit your doctor). Please call in and see us at Burns Pharmacy for a professional, personal and friendly service.

Autumn

Embrace The New Season & Feel Gorgeous Doing It! Leopard print is everywhere! It is a strong look and so easy to wear. But what makeup? Simple but bold is my fave! Create a gorgeous, dewy skin base, I love delilah’s Time Frame foundation (available at DHMB, £34), a perfect balance of bright skin glow and coverage to give you skin confidence. Sweep the award winning and simply phenomenal delilah Aura Pure Light (available at DHMB, £36) over your cheek bones, a little (and really only a little is needed) on the tip of the nose and above the bow of the lip. Pure Light is the most remarkable illuminating and brightening powder, that gives soft, multidimensional radiance to any skin tone. I love it! Coat, coat and coat some more mascara onto those lashes. My fave mascara here is the Senna Voluptulash. We have been using and selling this in the salon for 5 years and it is still our number one. It’s also a pretty perfect price at £14.50. Then, my fave bit, the lipstick; Go Bold. Everything else is simple, effortless and this is where you can bring a bit of personality. I like an coral tone or true deep red, especially if I am wearing a strong print. Delilah do these shades pretty well and both of these truly pop! Also new this season is the Zoya collection Elements. Zoya have been awarded the longest wearing natural nail polish by an independent panel in Women’s Health Magazine, and is free of toluene, formaldehyde, DBP (phthalates) and camphor, vegan friendly and cruelty free too! Deborah Harper Makeup & beauty will be launching this September, so definitely a reason to call in and pick up a new shade or let us polish your nails for you, Manicure £36, File & Polish £15. At DHMB we sell the gorgeous True Grace and SUN.DAY of London candles. I have one in the living room and one in the hall. But do I ever light them!? Oh no, I have to wait for a ‘special occasion’ but with the darker nights setting in I have enjoyed just lighting them and even though, its only for me and no one else is about to also enjoy them - that is ok! Enjoy the good things and take a moment to find the joy in these little things.

Use an upholsterer and you can get a piece covered, learn upholstery and you can cover things for the rest of your life!

A

utumn is around the corner and we will be spending more time indoors. So it’s time to freshen up some of your covered furniture. Instead of buying something new, recover it with new fabric. The Spinning Wheel and Mad about Fabrics both in Belfast, have great selections of fabrics, you will be astonished at the variety of patterns and textures. Once you have your material (ask advice on how much you need, the bigger the pattern the

more waste) you can either pay an upholsterer or for the same money (or probably less) you can learn to do it yourself. On the Square emporium, Refound and Nicola Parkes Upholstery have teamed up and kitted out a training workshop where you can learn how to cover a small chair or stool in half a day or take longer 6 session course for larger items. You will get so much more pleasure from a lovely piece knowing it is your handy work.

Courses start at £35 for 4 hour course to £180 for a 6 session course. www.onthesquareemporium.com | www.refoundonline.com

Get the Gang Together!

OUR NEXT 4 TASTING DINNERS Saturday 22nd September INDIE FUDE • £45pp

We’re teaming up with Conall from GAPWines and Jonny from Indie Füde in Comber to showcase 5 wines paired with 5 courses inspired by Jonny’s locally sourced range. Conall will tell us about the wine and Jonny will talk to us about what we’re eating! ‘Collaboration’ is the word of the night!

Saturday 20th October MEET THE BREWER DINNER with Bullhouse Brewing Company (Newtownards) • £40pp We’re super excited to invite William Mayne from Bullhouse over to show us the incredible things him and his team have been brewing just down the road from us! 5 Bullhouse beers with 5 appropriately tasty courses.

Saturday 3rd November ‘OFF THE BEATEN TRACK’ Wine Tasting Dinner • £45pp

Join Felicia from Prohibition NI as she introduces us to some lesser known grape varieties and wine producing regions. We were inspired by the speed in which our Lebanese Wine Night sold out earlier in the year, so we took that as a sign that you wanted to explore a bit!

Saturday 24th November BASQUE REGION WINE TASTING DINNER • £45pp

This time, Felicia finds her work cut out to narrow down her shortlist to just 5 wines from this prolific area. Likewise, we’re looking forward to ‘researching’ the 5 Basque courses for the event!

You know by now, these events fill up quickly, so BOOK SOON to get your space. We take a £10pp deposit to secure the booking. Seating on the night is communal (long tables), so you MIGHT have to talk to strangers, but we’re usually a lovely bunch!
