Belmont & Holywood Cancer Research Fund Raising Committee This is the end of our 30th year as Belmont CR Committee and now we have merged with the Holywood area.
O
ur committee raises annually between £15,000 and £20,000 which is sent to CRUK head office for distribution to research centres throughout the UK. Across the UK each year Cancer Research allocates approximately £430 million which is spent on research on over 200 types of cancers. Here, our NI Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology receives over twice as much as is raised in NI for their research and clinical trials.
UPCOMING EVENTS *Our next event is the Annual Quiz on Friday 23rd Nov at 7.30 held at CIYMS in Belmont. The Sanctuary A new area has been created within the school’s Learning Zone
Ashfield Girls’ School Creates Sanctuary For Autistic Pupils Team Work Now that the summer holidays have drawn to a close, one local high school student has used the break to create a new area named The Sanctuary, within their school’s Learning Zone, with help from the team at IKEA Belfast. 14-yearold Chelsea Smith helped design the space with her Head of Junior School IKEA Belfast’s design team donated inspirational and calming products to ensure relaxation and to boost productivity

helsea Smith, a Year 11 pupil at Ashfield Girls’ High School, wanted to create a sensory space at the school’s Learning Zone for pupils who suffer from anxiety. Beverley Cripps, Head of Junior School was so inspired by Chelsea’s conscientious proposal that she put forward the idea to create the room to the School Principal. Shortly after this, Beverley reached out to IKEA Belfast to ask for some support with designing the room. The store is located just a few short minutes from the east Belfast school. Beverley also liaised with a local autism support group to get advice on items that may help create a calming atmosphere for the room and worked with IKEA Belfast’s Interior Design team who addressed their needs by

donating soft lighting from a SOLVINDEN LED lighting chain, comfy STOCKHOLM 2017 cushions and a SANDARED pouffe. Additional KALLAX shelving units were also donated to keep the room free of clutter and keep items out of view using DRONA storage creating a fresh, clear space. Thanks to the donation of functional products from IKEA Belfast, Chelsea has created an everyday Sensory Space for pupils who are looking for a calming and quiet place to relax during school break times. Gemma Drinkell, Marketing Specialist from IKEA Belfast commented; “At IKEA, our vision is to help create a better everyday life for the many people and we know how important a sanctuary is
to escape busy corridors that can often be overwhelming. Local Man with Learning Difficulties Secures First Job at Bangor Town Hall Job Satisfaction
James Nelson from Bangor has been offered his first paid job as a cleaner in Ards and North Down Borough Council following training and support from social enterprise NOW Group.
J
ames, aged 27, always wanted to follow in the footsteps of his late Mum and become a cleaner. However, not being able to read or write, he found traditional job search services didn’t work as he wasn’t able to complete application forms nor did he feel confident being interviewed. Things changed when he was referred to NOW Group, a social enterprise that supports people with learning difficulties and autism into training and employment. NOW specialise in offering dedicated employment officers who work with people at whatever stage they are at on their path to employment. Training courses, careers advice as well as help in applying for jobs and attending interviews is provided as part of the service. When a cleaning job with Mount Charles based in Bangor Town Hall was advertised James applied prepping for hours beforehand with his Employment Officer. He was offered the job just hours after the interview. James now works part time hours, five days a week. James said, “I was nervous starting the job because I didn’t know if people would like me or if I would know what to do, but everyone is really friendly and I love my job. I found it tiring at
first but I like coming here every day and I know the place like the back of my hand now! “My family are pleased, especially because I am following in Mum’s footsteps. It’s nice to be able to make my own money which I’m going to use to pay for driving lessons. NOW made everything much easier than when I was trying to get a job by myself; I’d tell everyone who has a learning difficulty to speak to them because they will be able to help you.” NOW Group participants are able to take part in a number of accredited training courses for example Essential Skills English, Customer Service, CV Writing and Interview Skills. Employment officers also help with job searches, writing applications and can even request reasonable adjustment from potential employers to attend interviews for support. James is also part of NOW’s Skills Group, a group who meet weekly in Bangor to improve their employability skills and take part in activities that may help them secure work including job searches, employer visits and communication exercises. Through this group James has made new friends and now regularly socialises with them. NOW continue to support participants once they have

found a job and James’ Job Coach Emily Downey worked alongside him in his new role for a few weeks to make sure he was confident in what he was doing. Emily helped to break down tasks and even created a workbook showing what he had to do each day. Councillor Richard Smart, Mayor of Ards and North Down Borough Council said, “It is hugely important to provide support services for individuals to remove the many barriers that keep people with learning disabilities out of the work place. People with learning difficulties often struggle to get into work because of the preparation that is needed to secure and be successful in interviews. NOW Group helps to break down these barriers providing pre and post support and a pathway for people to be placed in jobs. It’s a win win for both parties.” NOW Group’s employment and training service is part funded by the European Social Fund 2014-2020, Department for the Economy, Department for Communities and Ards and North Down Borough Council.

on Main Street in Crawfordsburn. The arts centre and cafe is run by the NOW Group, an award winning social enterprise that supports people with learning difficulties and autism into jobs

In the lead up to Christmas Loaf Pottery will be helping customers get in the festive spirit with a number of themed events. The Pottery is running workshops for people to make their own Christmas tree toppers or Christmas baubles, while those looking for a unique office Christmas party can book a private Pizza and Pottery night for up to 15 people. Travel For Treatment Grant Takes Off From Belfast City Airport Partnership
Belfast City Airport has partnered with the Cancer Fund for Children to provide families with sick children access to the Travel for Treatment grant.
T
hose who need specialised care, such as a bone marrow transplant, often have to travel to England for procedures that are not available in Northern Ireland. The grant will enable ten families who have a child diagnosed with cancer to travel to specialised hospitals without the additional stress of the financing the trip. Rachel Burgoyne, Cancer Fund for Children, commented: “Families who receive a childhood cancer diagnosis often face additional costs of £600 per month, not to mention the parent who may have to leave work to assume a full-time carer role. Our Travel for Treatment Grant helps to reduce some of the financial worries surrounding
treatment and allows parents to focus on what really matters – caring for their child.” This is not the first time that Belfast City Airport has partnered with Cancer Fund for Children with a previous grant awarded to send families to Daisy Lodge, a purpose-built therapeutic centre located in Newcastle. Stephen Patton, HR and Corporate Responsibility Manager at Belfast City Airport, added: “Supporting young people is at the heart of our corporate responsibility programme, and we are delighted to team with Cancer Fund for Children to provide the Travel for Treatment grant through our Community Fund.
“While Belfast City Airport already caters for specialised travelling, with a fully trained team and regular consultations with local groups, the grant will make life a little easier for the families by covering the cost of flights and accommodation. “The partnership closely aligns with our core values and the work that the Cancer Fund for Children does not only improves mental health and wellbeing, but provides families with a helping hand and a someone to talk to when it gets overwhelming.” Belfast City Airport’s Community Fund has supported 150 different groups and organisations since its inception, with over £350,000 going into the community.

Team Work The first ever football team of local charity Orchardville.
Orchardville Dfc (Disability Football Club) Kicks Off! Support Orchardville DFC (Disability Football Club), the first ever football team of local charity Orchardville, will be playing in this year’s 2018/19 IFA Disability league. Sponsored by Diageo NI, the team is made up of Orchardville service users from Belfast, Bangor and Lisburn, who are aged 18 or over.

rchardville charity, which supports people with learning disabilities and/ or autism, were encouraged to create a team after a group of service users competed in last year’s George Best Community Cup and came third. Joan McGinn, chief executive, Orchardville discusses: “We are thrilled to be playing in the 2018/19 IFA Disability league. Involvement in the league will bring so many benefits to our service users – increased physical and mental wellbeing, an opportunity to develop team working skills, increased confidence, competitiveness and of course fun! I would like to thank our staff, especially Michael McShane, our team manager, who is being ably
assisted by Graham Rankin and of course those volunteering at training and matches – we couldn’t do this without them. Also, a special word of thanks to our charity partner, Diageo, for sponsoring our team kit and to the IFA for all their support. Finally, thanks to our team for their dedication and enthusiasm – we wish you every success in the league.” Matches will be held once a month and football training will take place once a week. Cultra Inn Unveil Brand New Menu Review With a brand new menu just launched featuring a host of local produce at its core, we had the pleasure of sampling some of the signature dishes. New menu, new dishes and a new experience, we had a wonderful evening in the company of the legendarily effortless Hastings service.
T
his County Down bar and restaurant has been a local culinary staple for generations. And throughout this time it has not lost its charm. The rich wooden interior and that dramatic roof with exposed beams are still centre stage providing the backdrop for what feels like a cosy, rural eaterie. However just minutes from Belfast and located in the lush green grounds of the Culloden Estate and Spa, this is a beautiful location for all seasons. On our particular baltic night, the log fire signalled the imminent arrival of autumn and
so we were warmly welcomed by Helen who was a fantastic host for the evening and who talked us through the new elements of the menu along with her recommendations. Drinks on order, we took in the new dishes and began to whittle. To start we opted for the Whipped Fivemiletown Goats Cheese with Comber Beetroot and Candied Walnuts. Wonderfully presented with three generous portions of cheese, perfect in its consistency, the classic combo with the walnuts worked beautifully with the
accompanying shoots, salad and vegetables, all perfect in size and texture surrounded by the sweet dressing. A triumph. We also had the Cultra Spicy Buffalo Chicken Wings Served with Kearney Blue Cheese Dip and Celery. The crispy coating was sublime and perfectly cooked plus the seasoning and heat were bang on. An excellent dip that combined very well with the flavours and the palette cleansing celery was a great addition. To follow we took Helen’s recommendation and went with the Pan Fried Fillet of North Coast

Hake which sounded incredible. It came with with a Spicy Crab Cake, Crispy Pancetta, Pea Purée, Samphire and Burnt Cucumber Oil. Again, knock out presentation and sensational flavours. The hake, perfectly cooked and kept company by that crab cake which was a particularly notable addition to the dish and the salty crispy pancetta was a superb layer to add to the mix. Proud of their sourcing of local produce, Hastings have excelled themselves with their run down of local meat; Hannan’s Glenarm Shorthorn Beef, Irish chicken, Hannan’s Northern Irish Himalayan Salt Aged Sirloin Steak, Irish Dry Cure Bacon and Gracehill Black Pudding Sausages all feature throughout the menu. We opted for the sirloin served with Onion Rings, Flat Mushroom, Tomato, Hand Cut Chips and
sauce. A joy to behold, the meat was tender, medium and each of the sides was a classic accompaniment and tastefully cooked and presented with as much care as the star of the dish. For any meat lovers, this is an experience. The end was regrettably in sight with just one more course to try. A heated summit followed whether to take the sweet route or indulge in yet more cheese. The Irish cheese slate to share sounded almost too good to ignore but lost out in the final deliberations to a Honey and Lemon Crème Brûlée and a Maple, Pecan and Bailey’s Cheesecake. And they did not let us down. The Brûlée was served with an Orange Sablé Breton and topped with a sprinkling of blueberries and raspberries for a zingy angle to proceedings. The cheese cake,
soft texture levels perfected, and the ultimate biscuit base as a contrast was a marvel. And so we were done. An autumnal evening of pure quality in warm surroundings and fantastic staff, presenting the hard work from the kitchen creating this stunning new menu. It’s easy for any establishment to say they use only the freshest locally sourced ingredients. But it’s how they are used and how they are presented to you.
