A ‘Ground-Breaking’ Television First For Holywood’s Morrow Communications Morrow Communications, the Holywood headquartered integrated communications consultancy, has produced its first television documentary.
T
he documentary ‘Groundbreakers: Anne Acheson: The Art of Medicine’ was co-produced alongside Clean Slate TV was recently broadcast on BBC Two Northern Ireland and is now available on BBC iPlayer. It tells the story of Portadown-born, pioneering Sculptor Anne Acheson who revolutionised the treatment of fractures. Speaking about the documentary, Aisling Gallagher, Producer at Morrow Communications said: “Building on our strong credentials across content creation, production and script-writing, we are proud
to have brought the story of this remarkable Northern Irish woman to life in our first television documentary. Working with Clean Slate TV and BBC Northern Ireland, the programme tells the relatively unknown story of Anne Acheson’s ground-breaking work and her ingenious contribution to medicine. Using Plaster of Paris is commonplace in hospitals today and that is all thanks to Anne’s innovative work during WW1.” “We would like to thank Northern Ireland Screen’s Ulster-Scots Broadcast Fund for their support and BBC Northern Ireland for
commissioning the documentary which has allowed us to create something that we are incredibly proud of.” Filming took place both in Northern Ireland and Anne’s second home London. Documentary presenter Dr Saleyha Ahsan takes viewers on the journey of Anne’s incredible life from her beginnings in Portadown to her War time years. Dr Ahsan has worked on the front line both as a Doctor and as a member of the British Army, and so has a real connection to Anne’s fascinating story.
The programme is available on BBC iPlayer under the Ulster-Scots section: https://www. bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0brf1qt/groundbreakers-anne-acheson-the-art-of-medicine

Expansion A local business has invested in repsonse to demand for its specialist services
Further Expansion for Entrepreneurial Physiotherapist A Holywood-based physiotherapy practice which specialises in the treatment of sports injuries and back pain has expanded for the third time in nine years in response to demand for its specialist services. www.northdownphysio.com
N
orth Down Physio has invested a further £200k in its facilities which includes the opening of a new studio space and the creation of four new jobs. The studio will initially be used for a range of physio-led pilates and yoga classes which will be tailored for rehabilitation, stress management and well-being. The business was established in 2009 by entrepreneurial physiotherapist, Julia Webster, who was one of the first to introduce the Sarah Key treatment method to Northern Ireland. This is a pioneering pain relief technique where the physiotherapist uses his/her feet to mobilise joints and muscles in the back. North Down Physio’s client base has grown year-on-year and the business now employs a 16-strong team
working over three floors of treatment rooms in Holywood. Julia, who trained in Northern Ireland and New Zealand, has worked as a physio for Team NI at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow (2014) and Australia (2018), at the London Olympics in 2012 and supported numerous sporting events throughout Ireland. According to Julia, the expansion of her business correlates with the public’s growing enthusiasm for health and fitness: “More people than ever before are getting active – and are taking their health seriously. This is really positive but as enthusiasts push their bodies to do more, they can become prone to sports injuries. “Our approach is holistic, we place great emphasis on patient education as well as treatment
– with the aim of creating improved health and wellbeing for the long term.” The new studio space will complement Julia’s multidisciplinary approach to client care. Julia added: “The classes will be small and focused – offering a more personal or bespoke approach – and are developed to cater for a wide range of needs, lifestyles and age-groups. While health and fitness are high up the agenda for some, we are also finding today’s more sedentary, desk-based lifestyle is taking its toll on necks, backs and spines. In response to this we are offering express classes at lunchtime to accommodate those working in offices nearby.”

Liam Burns Your local pharmacist on the services available for winter ailments
Winter Ailments Advice from Burns Pharmacy
During November 2014, a single week broke all NHS records for the most visits to A&E in a 7 day period. Unfortunately this time of year routinely brings an increase in poor health and some of the most common seasonal illnesses are outlined below. Also last year the UK was hit with one the worst flu seasons in decades with increased hospital admissions and confirmed deaths reported due to flu. FLU Flu is a major killer of vulnerable people. Those with long term health conditions (for example, diabetes or kidney disease) or those aged 65 and over are particularly at risk. These target groups should already have received their flu vaccine from their GP. If you are not included in this vaccination programme, you can obtain the flu vaccine privately from your local pharmacy. We are offering the new quadrivalent vaccination for £11 which protects against 2 strains of influenza A and 2 strains of influenza B. We would encourage you to get a flu vaccine as soon as possible so they are protected for the peak season which is usually January and February, although this can change every year.
ASTHMA Asthma attacks can be triggered by the cold weather at this time of year and your pharmacist can provide advice on reducing the risk of an asthma attack. NOROVIRUS Norovirus is also more prevalent at this time of year and is often referred to as ‘the Winter vomiting bug’. While Norovirus is unpleasant, for most people it passes within a couple of days. Young children and the elderly, however, are particularly at risk. When someone is ill with vomiting and diarrhoea it is important to drink plenty of fluids. Drinking oral rehydration fluids can also help reduce the risk of dehydration. These can be obtained from your pharmacy as part of the minor ailment scheme.
COLD SORES Cold sores also increase at this time of year and treatment for these can also be provided by your pharmacist under the minor ailments scheme. Burns Pharmacy can provide advice in relation to those illnesses which can be safely dealt with at home with advice and medication from your pharmacist. We will advise you to visit your GP where an illness may be more serious. We can in addition, provide advice in relation to what medicines to stock at home, so that you can respond quickly to the onset of any seasonal ailments. We can also help you to quit smoking, as smoking can increase the severity of some winter ailments. Please call at Burns Pharmacy for a professional and friendly service.

Local Business A high count of North Down businesses in the running for prestigious awards
A Record Breaking Year for North Down Businesses As Awards Shortlist Announced 2018 is set to be a record-breaking year for the annual BEFTAs - the new name for the UTV Business Eye Awards - which have been revamped as a result of the partnership between Business Eye and lead sponsor, First Trust Bank. businesseyeawards.co.uk
T
he total number of entries for the 2018 Awards, across 18 categories, is by far the biggest volume received during the 14-year history of Northern Ireland’s leading business awards, with many entries from local businesses in North Down making the shortlist. Mash Direct, The Momentum Group, Energystore, Pritchitts and Nitronica are some of the North Down businesses to be shortlisted. Gavin Halpin, from Holywood based Paper Owl Films, Andrew Davis from 77 Retail in Dundonald and Adam Gilmore from AG Electrical in Newtownards are all finalists in the Young Business Personality of the Year category. Across every category, the judging panel were faced with a difficult choice to make between high quality submissions according to Richard Buckley, Editor of
Business Eye, who said; “The step up in both quantity and quality this year is dramatic. In some categories, our judging panel faced an almost impossible task to differentiate between exceptional entries from some of our very best home-grown businesses. The quality, and the quantity, of entries is reflected in the comprehensive shortlist for this year’s BEFTA Awards.” The 2018 judging panel sat down at The Resolution Centre, a meeting facility based at The Boat on Belfast’s Donegall Quay, to make the tough calls for this year’s awards. The event will take place on Thursday, 22nd November, at ICC Belfast, the new name for the Belfast Waterfront Conference Centre. Fellow judge, Ann McSorley, Head of Corporate at First Trust Bank
added; “After supporting the small business awards for the past four years, acknowledging the best and brightest business owners and entrepreneurs from our small business community, it was only natural to join Business Eye in celebrating growth across our business community as a whole. “The high calibre of entries from every sector and corner of Northern Ireland made for a lively and difficult discussions for the judges, but we were all left with a great sense of optimism after discovering undeniable levels of passion, innovation and growth locally. We offer our congratulations to all those who made it onto the shortlist and look forward to celebrating the leaders in our business community at the new-look BEFTA awards later this month.”
You can view the shortlist online here: www.businesseyeawards.co.uk

ut don’t love the slightly cold, uninteresting look that can sometimes derive from it… Vintage accessories, artwork and wellchosen furniture add a little more curiosity, texture, and colour to your space. Not to mention some warmth
and personality! Well positioned antique pieces or colourful ‘pops’ can add warmth without adding more dreaded unwanted stuff to your Scandi-curated home! Invest in what you really love. Your home will love you for it.

Beauty Your local expert Deborah Harper with advice, news and wisdom
Time for Change
A Seasonal Shift
We have been so busy at Deborah Harper Makeup & Beauty this month. We have gone on an Autumnal cleaning spree rather than at the more usual springtime season. We have looked at all our ranges, we have taken some out, we have added some new and we have relaunched our treatment list. All of these things are exciting but busyness can be draining too. So in my usual style this month the focus is on enjoying the new and also taking a little time to self care during such a busy time. My new favourite thing at the salon is that we have launched Kate Spade gifts and accessories. This is so exciting for us as it is a fab brand, I love the bold colours, the attention to detail.

We have also decided to stock exclusively Zoya nail colours. 1. Because they have the most amazing shades and 2. They last way longer than any other brand we have used. In fact the founder of Zoya, Michael Reyzis, an advanced chemist, created the first working fast drying topcoat and the longest wearing, toxin free natural nail polish, revolutionising the nail in industry. We agree and all at DHMB just love the brand.
Indulge Yourself - Treatments A feature of our new treatment list is the launch of 3 new indulgence treatment experiences. Scrub and Glow Back Treatment | £55 This specific focus on the back includes an invigorating scrub, cleansing mask and a hydrating, gentle back, neck and shoulder massage. Head in the Clouds | £75 Indian Head massage followed by our beauty break facial the Escale Beauté. Escape to Serenity | £125 This package is the ultimate in self care. It includes our beautiful hot stone back, neck and shoulder massage, deeply hydrating Hydralessence Facial and an aroma-sculpting bamboo leg massage. From head to toe we will help you engage in rest and relaxation so that you feel truly refreshed, ready to resume life with a sense of peace and positivity.
£5 OFF RETAIL After what has been a hectic month I am in much need of booking one of these relaxing treats. Thank you for all your support this year, please pop in and see us and remember to bring your
