or the bottom layer, Andrew took inspiration from what first-class passenger Lady Duff Gordon remembered most about the food on board Titanic - fresh strawberries, grapes and pink roses. He created a luxurious Genoese sponge layered with fresh strawberry and red grape jam along with a lightly rose-flavoured buttercream to reflect the first-class experience on-board. Whereas the modern top layer of chocolate cake with a Bailey’s Cream filling reflects Titanic’s Northern Irish roots and celebrates the success of Titanic Belfast today. Great British Bake Off Finalist, Andrew Smyth, commented

“I am thrilled to be involved with Titanic Belfast’s 5th Birthday celebrations and am delighted to be designing a unique cake for this special milestone. Titanic Belfast really is a fantastic experience, I’ve visited multiple times and keep coming back for more. As a Northern Irish engineer, I have a real pride associated with the maritime heritage of the area and this Experience is a real gem in Belfast’s crown, a fitting celebration of the ingenious engineering and majesty of Titanic. It rightly deserves its title as the World’s Leading Tourist Attraction and I hope many more visitors get to experience the magic over the next 5 years too!”

/// Check out the recipe at www.titanicbelfast.com

Tim Husbands MBE, Chief Executive of Titanic Belfast, “Having been crowned the World’s Leading Tourist Attraction, welcomed over 3.5 million visitors including Her Majesty The Queen, former US Secretary of State and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, TITANIC director James Cameron, the discoverer of Titanic, Dr Robert Ballard and hosted over 1,500 events, we have five years full of Titanic memories! Today, as we celebrate our fifth birthday with Andrew’s cake, we’re adding to these memories. Andrew’s cake showcases the allure of RMS Titanic in 1912 as well as its enduring appeal today for visitors at Titanic Belfast.

HOLYWOOD HARMONY FESTIVAL EXPANSION PLANS UNDERWAY LOCAL SUPPORT HELPS INVOLVE MORE OF THE COMMUNITY ORGANISERS OF THE HOLYWOOD HARMONY FESTIVAL HAVE ANNOUNCED A SERIES OF EXPANSION PLANS THAT WILL SEE THE FESTIVAL GROW IN SIZE OVER THE COMING WEEKS.

T H

he three-day line-up of the volunteer-run event has already announced big name acts such as Hothouse Flowers, Ulaid & Duke Special, Gareth Dunlop, Dana Masters and The Emerald Armada. Running from Friday June 2 to Sunday June 4 the festival, sponsored by Garry’s Barber Shop and now in its third year, is incorporating much more of the local community than ever before. And it’s all thanks to a fantastic Crowdfunding campaign being run by the festival committee. With almost £1000 pledged online and even more in person at Garry’s Barber Shop, the festival’s main sponsor, Mari Jackson says she’s delighted to be able to announce the expansion. Festival chair Mari explained: “This year we were keen to try to continue our outreach work to be able to bring the festival to the wider community. We

already have a strong offering for music fans in our headline acts and various support acts but it was important to the committee to find a way to connect with everyone in the town and further afield. So we’ve teamed up with Tessa Ann of TONIC Health & Wellness who is going to deliver a special festival food, craft and health fair on the Saturday and Sunday which will be free to enter for the public. We’ve also got Q Radio coming on Saturday to entertain the crowds whilst the legendary George Lowden has very kindly offered to take part in an Audience With….George Lowden on Sunday afternoon. All these additions to the festival are part of our expansion plans and we’re truly thankful to everyone who has already donated or pledged through our Crowdfunding page or in person at Garry’s Barber Shop in the town. The campaign ends on May

11 and we’re hoping to secure enough funding to be able to add some more last minute free events for children, families and the elderly. At present we receive no funding except that of the generous festival goers, fans and local businesses who have put great faith in our team.” Now in its third year the County Down festival is a family-friendly event. Tessa Ann from TONIC Health & Wellness said there will be a whole host of local artisan food producers, crafters and health and wellness experts exhibiting throughout the weekend. She added: “We’re delighted to be facilitating the festival village area this year and we hope that people will come along to see what’s on offer. From arts, crafts, food and drink to health, wellness and other activities there’ll definitely be something for everyone to help them bring out their zest for life.”

Rockport School

ON COURSE FOR SUCCESS GOLF ACADEMY

T H

ROCKPORT SCHOOL HAS FORGED MANY UNIQUE ELEMENTS IN ITS 111 YEAR HISTORY AND IN 2016 CONTINUED THAT VEIN OF INNOVATION WITH THE LAUNCH OF THEIR GOLF ACADEMY, THE FIRST AND ONLY SCHOOL-BASED GOLF ACADEMY IN IRELAND. WE CAUGHT UP WITH HEAD OF PE & LIFE SKILLS GAIL HOLLAND, MARKETING EXECUTIVE EMMA THOMPSON AND ONE OF THE RISING STARS OF THE ACADEMY; JAMIE NEVIN (11).

he Golf Academy offers an exciting opportunity for pupils of all ages, and the programme extends beyond playing with modules on etiquette, rules, course management, green-keeping, caddying and physical health and fitness. “The idea was that it would be a 3 tier system; beginners, development and elite.” said Gail. “Our academy has children at different levels with potential that we can develop. I’m a teacher, not a coach and I want to see everybody getting a chance to play, so we introduced Wednesday as our school’s ‘golf day’ and from playgroup (aged from two and a half) upwards they pitch and putt, go to Blackwood for targets and we work with the golf pros to identify who has potential talent to progress. We then put them onto development squads at

Holywood Golf Club and our Elite Squad go to Bangor Golf Club. Home matches are played at Royal Belfast and we work with the pros throughout all of the clubs. Our Elite team will be competing at a high level and dedicated time is given to allow practice but at the end of the day, they all need to pass their GCSE’s and qualifications. They have to go through academic route too. That’s the guarantee - that they don’t fall behind. It’s not an exclusive golf school – it’s a Golf Academy within a school setting and the academic has to be maintained as well as play their golf.” And as Emma explains, it’s an opportunity for everyone to get involved. “Our Academy welcomes both boys and girls and it’s great to see such enthusiasm. We have actively encouraged girls to get involved and they have really

shone, with the Rockport Girls team recently winning the Irish Junior Schools trophy. Golf gives the opportunity for our young people to be outside, they’re learning and they’re doing really well. As a school we have great golf connections – it’s in our blood and the academy has grown organically. We want it to evolve and now we are seeing successes emerge like Jamie Nevin. Jamie only picked up a club in August 2016 and is the epitome of raw talent. Since then his progress and enthusiasm has been extraordinary - he is now part of a senior squad working with Stephen Crooks at Holywood. “It has been brilliant for me,” said Jamie. “And when I come home from school, I just want to go out and play again. I’m a member at Holywood with my Dad. At Rockport I also play

hockey, football, do some cross country, fitness, swimming. But golf is my favourite!” Jamie’s parents have also seen the impact the academy has had on Jamie on so many levels. “Jamie gained a golf scholarship in November 2016 to Rockport, I and Jamie’s uncle also attended Rockport so we’re delighted he’s there. It is amazing the transformation that in just four months since Jamie started at Rockport aged 11, he has gained incredible confidence in himself, adapted to meeting new people and indeed conquered new situations that would once have been anxiety filled. It is not just a coincidence this occurred

but is down to the staff, pupils and Headmaster at Rockport. From our first meeting with the Headmaster, Jamie was the focus of the conversation. We saw that Rockport were interested in the individual. The coaches recognise the golfing skills he has and are building on his technique, stamina and confidence. It’s not unusual for Jamie to come home from school and still want to go and play at his home club, Holywood. He is delighted now the nights are getting brighter so he can play in the evenings with his dad. He’s now also enjoying trying new sports and has joined different teams.” The school are constantly

building on the academy and are now working towards the development of an advanced onsite facility and fostering new links with American universities. There are opportunities for talented young golfers wishing to join the programme and Rockport School is offering bursary and scholarship support for pupils at GCSE and A-Level and an annual Golf Talent Identification Day will be held on Wednesday 7th June, for the identification of potential golf scholars. Anyone interested in coming along to the identification day or the School Open day on Saturday 3rd June, feel free to get in touch.

Why I Believe In Skin Care I have been using and stocking Yon-Ka for 6 years now. It is a skincare range I love as it uses the best of nature and the best of new technology.

HARSH REALITY From the age of 40 skin ageing is triggered and the visible changes speed up. I was so excited to head to Dublin to hear of how Yon-Ka have been working on a new synergy of ingredients using plant based stem cells. They launched their latest defence against the wrinkles - Time Resist Day and Night cream. It has been lovely to try it out and I was so excited to read that when used together, for 1 month in a clinical test they found a 75% reduction in wrinkles, skin was 98% hydrated and 100% nourished. I love the results!

Over the years I think I have heard it all… from a woman who used diluted bleach to wash her face to the dreaded baby wipes as a makeup remover.

WHY A SEPARATE DAY AND NIGHT CREAM? To be honest I base this on age. Under the age of 30 I used the one moisturiser for both day and night and an eye cream. Over 30 I have added boosters (serums) and exfoliation treatments. I have also added night cream to the regime. The Time Resist night cream has a focus to regenerate the cells so that they work better, to increase dermal density, to protect and preserve the cells. There is a cost but what it comes down to is how much I want to resist the needle so my home care needs to be consistent for there to be visible success. SPEAK TO AN EXPERT At Deborah Harper Makeup & Beauty we are passionate about our skincare knowledge and we pride ourselves at being at the cutting edge of what is happening in our industry. It is important that we keep things simple for our clients - a home care regime that will bring results but not overwhelm and facials that will bring visible results to leave the client relaxed, of course but most importantly - delighted at their radiant, improved complexion. FEED YOUR SKIN For the past year I have been using an Omega supplement from the Advanced Nutrition Program. The Skin Omegas+ is the perfect companion to my routine. It contains optimum levels of EPA (an important omega 3) along with GLA (important omega 6) made from Evening Primrose Oil. Vitamin A is a key ingredient for skin health. My aim is to keep the wrinkles at bay, my skin glowing, dewy and youthful.

MAKE A CHANGE If you find yourself complaining that your skin is too dry, that you have reoccurring breakouts, that your skin is dull or if you no longer understand your skin as it has changed over the years…it doesn’t have to be that way. Book in for a facial with a salon you trust, ask for their advice and try out samples of the products at home. There are changes that you can make that will transform how you feel about your skin. 7 STATION SQUARE • HELEN’S BAY 028 9185 2859 • DEBOR AHHARPERBEAUTY.CO.UK

nd you don’t always have to purchase ‘new’ to create a characterful, flower-filled, relaxing outdoor space – whatever the size. Hopefully, the Norn Irish weather will be kind to us this year and provide enough opportunities to use whatever outside rooms we create! Being a little creative with your small, medium or large patio/gardens will reward you no end, when the weather allows! A few personal touches can transform even the smallest of

outdoor areas into a little oasis such as the first image above left. If it’s a zone for an evening drink you’re after – then comfortable seating, a fire pit and a steady table is your main focus. Around that you can add plants and flowers in pots stacked or hanging. Like the example above centre; Try an old pair of ladders that won’t use much floor space. Or hooks and metal planter pots hanging from the wall Or if you fancy getting green-fingered, then a small potting station

pictured along witrh interesting plant pots will add character. Check out the ideas here from an old tin bath to a Belfast sink. And for an industrial/ rustic look you could try upcycling some old pallets. Pallets are great for turning into garden furniture. There are endless tutorials online, showing you how to turn pallets into tables, chairs, benches and almost anything. Add some outdoor fairy lights and you’re all set! Oh and maybe a blanket….

SPRING IS HERE: TIME TO TALK RHINITIS AKA HAYFEVER 1.

Spring has arrived , local Holywood pharmacist Liam Burns (MPS) offers advice for people who may suffer from rhinitis, better known as hay fever

H H

ay fever is an allergic reaction to certain types of airborne pollen. Grass pollen is the most common culprit (affecting 95% of sufferers). Common symptoms include runny, itchy or blocked nose, sneezing and itchy eyes. Allergic reactions often start in childhood/teenage years but the body can learn to adapt, so the symptoms may ease as

people grow older. Mild symptoms can often be managed without medication and by avoiding pollen as far as possible, although this is difficult as the minute particles can be carried over long distances. Eye drops may be helpful for streaming eyes. If your symptoms are wider than this, an antihistamine tablet or liquid may be best and a non-sedative antihistamine is

preferable if you are working or driving. If tablets do not control your symptoms your pharmacist may recommend a steroid nasal spray that can help control all the symptoms associated with hay fever. Come and visit us in Burns Pharmacy at Abbey Ring, Holywood and we will direct you to the medication that is best suited to you.
