Parking in Yarra Parking in Yarra
There are sometimes more cars in Yarra than there are car parking spaces. This City is old. Local streets built in the 1800’s were not designed for cars or for households to park more than one car. Council wants to try and fi x local traffi c and parking issues but not by building more carparks or asking for more roads. Council’s priority is to improve and protect parking for residents and businesses while encouraging more people to use public transport. Council has five different parking permits: • Residential (if you live in Yarra) • Business (if you own a business in Yarra) • Disabled (if you have a disability or care for someone with a disability) • Visitor (for when people come and visit you) • Temporary (when you need a permit for a short period of time) Most people who live in Yarra are allowed to get up to three parking permits. For example if you live in Yarra and own two cars you can apply for two residential permits and one visitor permit. People living in apartments or units built after December 2003 are not eligible for a street parking permit. Please check with Council if you are unsure if you are eligible for a permit. These permits are valid for 12 months and enable you to park legally in one area (like near your home) for a yearly fee, or for free if you are applying for a disabled permit. Your parking permit will have a large number on it. You are allowed to park legally in the area marked with the same number (see the map on page 2). If you park in the wrong area you may receive a fine. If you do get a fine, you have 28 days to pay. If you do not pay the within 28 days further legal action may be taken and you may need to pay more money to Council. If you think you have a good reason for not paying your fi ne you can ask Council to review it.
