Derby Libraries Animal Agents Summer Reading Challenge 2017 This year’s Summer Reading Challenge is called Animal Agents and starts on Saturday 15 July. It’s free to join and children must be members of Derby Libraries to take part. Illustrated by the UK’s best-selling children’s illustrator Tony Ross, the storyline features a detective agency manned by all kinds of clever animals – furry, scaly and slippery – who are investigating some strange goings-on at the local library and children are invited to help the agents to solve the mystery. The challenge is for children aged from around 2 to 11 years. To take part, they must read or share six library books during the summer. They can read any books they like – stories, fact books, picture books - it’s up to them. Audio books and eBooks also count. Everyone who joins gets a colourful fold-up collector folder and a character sticker for every book they read. Each sticker reveals a new clue to help solve the mystery. When children complete the challenge, they’ll get a certificate and a colourful zip tag featuring artwork from Animal Agents, which can be

attached to bags and pencil cases. There’s an extra reward for those who read a further four books. Children under four will have their own collector card and stickers with an Animal Agents door hanger as award for completing. The challenge is supported by a programme of free themed holiday sessions at every library including animal handling shows, performance storytelling, meet the author, themed crafts and coding events. Children can sign up at any library in Derby from Saturday 15th July. Taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge helps children become confident and enthusiastic readers and supports their learning at school. National Forest Adventure Farm Pirates of the Maize Maze at the National Forest Adventure Farm. 15 July - 4 September This summer weigh anchor, hoist the Jolly Rodger and set sail on a treasure hunting pirate adventure through the 10 acre Maize Maze! Follow the clues around the miles of pathways, bridges and viewing towers to discover Captain Del Gardo’s treasure. For little legs there is the shorter Mini Maze. Help Pirate Penny collect all the items she needs to cast off on a quest on the high seas. Deep in the maze, take part in Cannonball Chaos. Join the battle and fire cannonballs to protect Del Gardo’s ship as you take on enemy pirates! Follow the exploits of Captain Del Gardo in

two brand new live shows; Escape from Blackbeard’s Bay and From Bilge to Bow: The Capt’ns Tale. Learn the pirating skills you needs to join Del Gardo’s crew in Buccaneer Bootcamp. Cheer on your pirate rubber duck as it races down the water course to the finish line in the Pirate Duck Race.
