Summer's ofﬁcially here and we have put together all the information you need to keep you and your little ones entertained come rain or shine! In this issue we give you loads of great ideas to make sure that the School Summer break is as relaxing or as busy as you want it to be. We've listed summer camps, holiday clubs, activity days, day trips and family fun events across Derby and surrounding areas. Once again there have been a lot of changes in Lots on Weekly, so have a look to find out what groups are on near you but please bear in mind that most only run in term time so do check, if you can, before setting out. If you know of a group that is not listed please let me know, Lots for Tots Derby is owned and run solely by me so if you call or email it'll be me that you get through to. There are 2 competitions this issue. Find out on page 12 how you can win 4 tickets to see Derby Theatre's production of Holiday! On Page 47 SoccerstarsUK are offering the chance to win a course of Tiny Tots lessons when you book a trial. La Leche League Derbyshire Friendly Breastfeeding Support from Pregnancy onwards La Leche League (LLL) is a mother-to-mother breastfeeding support charity that was started in 1956 in Illinois, USA. They now have around 6,000 accredited Leaders across 70 countries, all of whom are volunteers (who have breastfed a baby for at least 12 months and undertaken a Leader Accreditation course) working from their homes around the needs of their own families. LLL is recognized by UNICEF and WHO as a world expert in breastfeeding and is the largest women’s health organisation in the world. They have their own medical liaison Leaders and Panel of Professional Advisors whom they can ask for additional information if need be. The core of their work is their network of local mother-to-mother support groups, facilitated by LLL Leaders. The Derbyshire group has been running for over 30 years and the monthly meetings are open to all who are pregnant or breastfeeding. There is always some form of cake available, along with healthy snacks, a cuppa and a library of books covering various aspects of

pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and parenting. Details of all LLL Derbyshire support group meetings, including occasional toddler meetings (for those who are feeding babies over 9 months & beyond) can be found on their facebook page (@lllderbyshire) which also has information and articles on all aspects of mothering and breastfeeding. Leaders can be contacted between meetings via the facebook page, on the phone (a national helpline), by email or via the national website which has a wealth of supportive, accurate and evidence based information. LLL understand that when a mother needs support it can’t wait until tomorrow. The heart of LLL’s work has always been mothering through breastfeeding and the foundation of their effectiveness has always been mother-to-mother support. Derby High Primary The benefits of outdoor learning are being recognised more and more... Research has shown that outdoor learning helps to improve pupils’ team working skills, increases self-confidence and encourages pride in, and an understanding of, our natural environment. At Derby High Primary, infant children enjoy lessons in the school’s dedicated Forest School setting with a fully qualified Forest School instructor.

The outdoors is a wonderful place to learn and a recent study by the Human-Environment Research Laboratory at the University of Illinois found that, after an outdoor learning session, children were more engaged and teachers spent significantly less time redirecting pupils back to their work.

The outdoor experience allows children at Derby High Primary to deepen their knowledge and understanding as they learn, although if you were to ask any of them whether they do ‘learning’ at Forest School they would tell you they just have fun, they don’t even realise they are learning at all!

Being able to explore a safe but ‘wild’ classroom, Derby High Primary pupils are able to use natural resources as 28

Derby Libraries Mischief Makers Summer Reading Challenge 2018 - starts on July 14th This years challenge is set in Beanotown, where Dennis, Gnasher and their buddies are on an adventure to discover hidden treasure. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s free to join and children can be members of any library in Derby to take part. This year's challenge is called Mischief Makers and is aimed at children aged up to 11 years. To take part, they must read six library books, collecting stickers as they go, earning a certificate when they complete them and a special wristband if they read four more books.
