Summer 2019
How to survive with the un d
Summer is finally here and we have prepared all the ideas and information you need to keep your diaries full of family fun from July to early October! The What’s On Local pages ahead are FULL of summer holiday clubs, workshops, day trips and family fun events across Derby and surrounding areas. So come rain or shine your summer can be as relaxing or busy as you want it to be! There’s a whole host of baby, toddler, pre-schooler classes and playgroups continuing over the holiday period. Visit the Lots on Weekly section to see what’s happening in your area and then plan ahead and decide what you’ll do when the Autumn term starts in September. I’m particularly proud of the amazing articles in this issue; Mother Hub introduce themselves as the new local resource for trusted information about pregnancy, birth and beyond. Kids Eat Out discuss the benefits of eating out with your children and give you some tips for when you do! Derby Libraries tell you all you need to know about this years Summer Reading Challenge ‘Space Chase’, AND there is a excellent article by Whitecross Head Teacher, Janet Mitchell who shares her knowledge on the importance of delivering high quality nursery education. I look forward to bringing you lots of Festive Fun in the next issue, which will be out in October! Laura Trethowan, Editor, Lots for Tots Derby

Mother Hub Bump, Birth and Beyond Mother Hub has been developed to provide local information for the women and families of Derbyshire as well as being a hub for trusted information about pregnancy, birth and the early days with your baby. Within the website there is a section for partners called ‘Parent Hub’ which helps partners in how to support the pregnancy and preparing for becoming a parent. The website allows local people to search via postcode to find children’s centres,
maternity units and breastfeeding groups in their area. Finding advice and information you can trust online can be difficult as there is so much conflicting, unreliable information from a Google search, and very little of it is localised. Mother Hub aims to be a one-stop hub for Derbyshire’s parent that is both local and NHS approved. www.motherhubderbyshire.co.uk

Kids Eat Out Taking the stress out of eating out with your little ones.
Whether it’s a quick lunch at the weekend or a special occasion, eating out with your little ones should a nice experience. However, it can be daunting when eating at home is a messy affair or a new walker just wants to, well, walk! Kids Eat Out is here to help make it easier for you. We’re researching venues to check their changing facilities, kids menus, staff patience, buggy space and other useful stuff. Whether you have an unpredictable newborn, a food throwing baby, an active walker or an energetic toddler, with some simple preparation eating out as a family can still be enjoyable. There are the obvious family friendly pubs with play areas but sometimes you want somewhere a bit different and that’s where Kids Eat Out comes in. We will review family friendly pubs but our main focus is pubs, cafes and restaurants with a bit more character.
Why eat out? Eating out helps to encourages flexibility in a child’s diet. Eating at home all the time means it’s easy to get stuck in a food rut, especially with picky eaters, but eating out changes the environment and therefore your little one’s expectations too. They can try bites of other’s food to help them to try new foods. It also helps them build social skills and manners in choosing, ordering, receiving and eating their food.
Be prepared! • Bring entertainment: Small, quiet, one piece toys which won’t roll off a table are ideal. • Time it right: Depending on their age, time it for during or after nap time. • Bring a plate & fork/spoon with you. • Choose from the menu in advance: Look online and on their social media pages. • Bring a large bib (or Tidy Tot if they love throwing!): It’ll catch any dropped food and make clean-up easier). • Respect your little one’s attention span: Expect that at some point they’ll want to go exploring – plan for this and check out where they can safely toddle. Our favourite places: • Annie’s Burger Shack, DE1 1JF • Bustler Street Food Market, DE1 2UE • Elements, Victoria St, DE1 1ES • House of Darwin, DE24 9EE @KidsEatOutDerby @Kids_Eat_Out @KidsEatOut

A small standalone Nursery School dedicated to providing the highest quality nursery education exclusively to 3 and 4 year olds.
www.lotsfortots.co.uk/derby
Whitecross Why the Early Years of Your Child’s Life is Important for Educational Success I, Janet Mitchell, have been the Head Teacher at Whitecross Nursery School for the past 10 years and my Ofsted outstanding team is passionate about the importance of delivering high quality nursery education. I’d like to share our knowledge with you: Research shows early childhood education is one of the best ways to help all children develop the social, emotional, physical and cognitive skills they need to prepare for school and beyond regardless of income or family structure. This includes those with learning or physical disabilities.
Good Habits Daily routines help children feel safe and secure. They are a great way to teach healthy habits, such as hand washing and eating their meals. When children know what to expect each day, they are more likely to be calm and settled. Literacy and Numeracy Skills These form the foundation for education and have a dramatic impact on academic success later in life. However, it’s so much more than just reading, writing and counting. Literacy skills are learnt through activities such as listening to stories, talking about pictures and making marks on paper and other media. They learn new numeracy skills through activities such as singing and playing music or through sand, water and block play. These are all activities delivered throughout the day at Whitecross Nursery.
Social and Emotional Development Attending nursery gives your child an opportunity to develop social skills, helping them form healthy relationships with other people. They’ll learn how to get along with their peers, to share and take turns, listen to others, express their ideas and become independent. A Lifelong Love of Learning A high quality nursery will inspire a lifelong love of learning and is one of the most important investments that can be made in a child’s future. It also helps to develop confidence and curiosity. Children learn how to manage challenges, to become independent and develop a positive attitude to learning. These skills help your child settle into school and drive their academic success. Whether your child is starting school next year or in a few years’ time, consider giving them a head start by sending them to a nursery setting such as Whitecross Nursery School, that provides high quality early childhood education with well trained and experienced staff in a fun, caring and supportive environment. Our waiting list is always open. We hold an open day annually and you’re always welcome to any community event the school is involved in. Please do not hesitate to contact us for further information or to look around our school just off Kedleston Road: Whitecross Nursery School, Watson Street, Derby, DE1 3PJ. www.whitecross.derby.sch.uk admin@whitecross.derby.sch.uk 01332 371876

Summer Reading Challenge 2019 An out of this world adventure comes to Derby with Space Chase Derby Libraries are launching into outer space for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, with The Reading Agency. This year’s theme is Space Chase, an out-of-this world adventure inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. The storyline features super space family, The Rockets, on a thrilling mission to track down books stolen by mischievous aliens. All libraries in Derby, including those which are community managed, will be running the challenge from Sat 13 Jul to Sat 14 Sep. The challenge is for children to read any six library books during the summer holidays. They can read any books they like, whether they’re interested in stories, fact books or picture books, and whether they would rather listen to an audio book or read a printed book or an eBook. It’s up to them! Children who take part will get a free Space Chase collector folder, with clues to help find the aliens, uncover the missing books and complete the mission. When they complete the challenge children will receive a certificate and a special pair of Space Chaser glasses. Those who read a further four books will receive the extra reward of a Space Chase wristband.

The free Summer Reading Challenge events will be taking place at Alvaston, Mickleover and Riverside Libraries. Booking is essential for all of these events: Join storyteller John Kirk for If you believe… where he will tell a trio of stories including Jonathan Emmett’s Bringing Down the Moon, Simon James’ The Boy from Mars and a specially commissioned story by Dom Conlon called The Cow that Jumped over the Moon. Suitable for Age 4+. Sammy’s Space Adventure will be a fun and interactive adventure off in space. Sammy is 6, and loves space. It’s her biggest wish to visit the moon and this time round, it might just happen. This show is presented by Total Insight Theatre. Suitable for Age 4+. John Kirk will be bringing a new direction to Roald Dahl’s The Enormous Crocodile and children everywhere will enjoy finding out how the enormous crocodile became the first reptile in space! Suitable for Age 4+. Quite Remarkable Productions bring stories of friendship and imagination with live music, magic and plenty of silliness. Geoffrey Jumper and his friend Mandy will present a whirlwind, magical storytelling adventure. Suitable for age 2-6 years. Join the Zoolab team and be inspired by amazing animal space facts at the hands-on Space Race animal handling workshops. Children can meet and handle a range of exotic animals including stick insects, tree frogs, corn snakes, tarantulas and giant African land snails. Suitable for Age 4+.
