T
he Children’s Trust is delighted to be part of the Bump to Five Show 2012.
We are a charity working with children who have multiple disabilities and complex health needs, specialising in the care of children with brain injuries. The combination of services offered by The Children’s Trust is unique. Every year we help hundreds of children and young people and their families. We have an unparalleled reputation in our field thanks to our commitment to meeting the diverse needs of these children and their families, coupled with our ability to deliver the best possible combination of nursing, therapy, medical care and education. We currently have a Tadworth Brain Injury Co-ordinator, Jenny McIntyre covering areas of the East Midlands. Jenny’s role is to provide vital help to local children with acquired brain injuries who are going back to home and school life following their injury. Ollie (pictured above) was a happy two year old having lunch with his family when he grabbed a grape and popped it into his mouth. Within seconds, he was choking and fighting for his life. With a very faint heart beat, Ollie was rushed to hospital where staff struggled to stabilise his condition. It became clear that Ollie had suffered a severe brain injury through a
12
lack of oxygen. In just a few hours, Ollie had become unresponsive and could no longer walk, eat, sit up, hold a toy, communicate or even see. He was completely dependent on 24 hour care. Although Ollie was allowed home, it was obvious he would need more support than a local team could offer. When Ollie came to The Children’s Trust he was given his own individually tailored rehabilitation programme. With a range of therapies, Ollie started to make progress immediately. Within two weeks, Ollie was swallowing again. In just a month, Ollie’s brain had re-learnt to interpret visual signals and he regained his sight. Soon he was able to roll and sit up on his own for a few seconds as well as hold toys again and his noisy, cheerful personality re-emerged. Ollie has surprised everyone with his great progress, and is continuing to make improvements now that he’s returned home. The specialist services we provide come at a cost and we rely on voluntary donations from our supporters. Your donations help fund building works, new equipment, leisure and play activities and much more! If you would like to find out more about The Children’s Trust please contact Joanne Brown on 0115 9326109 or email jbrown@thechildrenstrust.org.uk

Combining fun with exercise, children go on wild adventures where they may roar like a lion, fly like a bird or blast into outer space! Whether your child has just started walking, or if they have been running circles around you for years, Mini, Mighty and MegaBugs is the perfect way to be active, increase confidence and develop your child’s creative imagination.

YogaBugs courses starting in Derby from April 2012! Walking to two year olds with a parent or guardian. Two to three and a half year olds with a parent or guardian. Three and a half to five year olds.
Fully inclusive
All children can do YogaBugs to their own ability. Children don’t need to be fast, have good hand to eye co-ordination or be physically fit.
Increase Confidence
Children are encouraged to be vocal during a class and express their emotions physically. Through creative visualisation techniques we help children believe they are unique and special.
Improve Concentration
Balancing postures help children to focus their mind and concentration techniques keep the mind in one place instead of letting it wander.
Fun!
There is a big emphasis on children having fun in a YogaBugs class, we take children on wild adventures and encourage them to use their creative imagination.
Price and how to book
Sessions will be taking place in our sports centres and in your local community. Sessions cost ÂŁ4.00 each class - you can book online at www.yogabugs.com Or for more information call Angie on: 0845 899 7163, or email: angie@yogabugs.com

Could you run Lots for Tots? I’ve been running Lots for Tots for 4 years now & I have loved every second. I’ve decided to step back from editing the Derbyshire magazine in order to expand Lots for Tots in other areas, allowing parents like me to work from home, with amazingly flexible time to fit around children & school holidays. Of course, this leaves the Derbyshire magazine open to offers. Lots for Tots needs to be run by a parent who is passionate! Passionate about the magazine & passionate about supporting your local area & local parents. Being a Lots for Tots franchisee brings with it a sense of responsibility. You will become known for what you do & you will need to be aware that you represent Lots for Tots in the parenting community. You are also responsible for impartial, fair & accurate content in your magazine. I am looking for someone with: • Passion, confidence & enthusiasm • An eye for design • No other work commitments • Young children! • The means to invest in a profitable business 34
This is a fantastic opportunity for the right person to be involved in the growth of Lots for Tots. You would be working closely with me to learn the ropes & as the Franchise grows around the Country, there is an opportunity for the right person to become involved in the Franchise business & even become a shareholder. This is not just a job role & it comes with a considerable investment on your part so please think about this before you apply. You would be buying a business on a franchise basis for 5 years that is profitable, established, has a fantastic reputation in the parenting & business community & has even more scope to grow. If this excites you & you are ready to invest in order to not just make a living but to create the lifestyle you long for with the balance of home, children, enjoyable work & time to suit you, then please get in touch. info@lotsfortots.co.uk

Keeping fit during pregnancy and after... What are the benefits of exercising during pregnancy?
Are you terrified at the prospect of a person coming out of you? Well you’re certainly not alone in that one. But keeping your muscles supple with some gentle stretches and exercises will actually make the act of giving birth just that little bit easier. Labour is hard work, particularly for first time mums, so keeping yourself active will help. Exercise will also prepare you for after the baby is born and the physical demands that motherhood will bring. It will be much easier to regain your pre-pregnancy fitness levels if you keep yourself active throughout the nine months. The size 10 jeans hanging up in your wardrobe may seem like a distant memory, but you could actually be back in them in no time, keeping in shape while you are pregnant means the baby weight should drop off much easier. Pregnancy is always going to take its toll on a mum’s body, and without going into the gory details, exercise will aid with constipation which many women find a big problem while they are pregnant. It also helps with tiredness and circulation problems.
TLC about a year and a half “ Ia joined go with the aim of toning up and
relieving sciatica back pain. After 3 months I had achieved my goal. When I fell pregnant last August I had no hesitation in going to Debs and getting my programme altered so I would be able to carry on at the gym. With continued support I was able to attend until I was 37 weeks pregnant. After a two month break I am back at the gym and well on the way to getting back to my pre pregnancy weight. I would definitely recommend TLC to anybody wanting to join a gym. It has worked for me and it could work for you to!
”
Benefits of exercise and keeping fit during pregnancy As well as increasing your energy levels, gentle exercise during pregnancy can also help: • Reduce discomforts such as constipation, cramps and backache • Make you feel stronger and able to cope with everyday tasks • Make you sleep better • Reduce stress and help to fend off any pregnancy blues • Keep you looking and feeling good • Meet other mums-to-be • Get your body shape back faster after your baby’s born • Prepare you for labour

All That Higgledy Piggledy Jazz! Elena Cobb, who teaches piano at Repton and Foremarke Schools in Derbyshire has composed her own pieces which she hopes will encourage children to master instruments such as piano, classical guitar and alto saxophone. “Feedback I’ve had from children is that they don’t enjoy practising at home because they have no one who can help them if they get stuck or are not sure about something. The Higgledy Piggledy Jazz series (piano, alto, sax & classical guitar) provides the children with all the answers they need on the page.” And this is what a professional pianist/ freelance composer Steve Duckworth wrote: “Congratulations with a super concept to Elena.
I wish I had had exposure to that kind of sheet music/ teaching at such young age.” Elena is a classically trained teacher with a great deal of experience in teaching. She came to the UK after meeting her husband Mark and was soon tutoring pupils at home. In 2010 Elena decided to set up a publishing company with the launched of her first book for piano and has already sold more than 300 copies. Books for classical guitar ensemble and alto saxophone went on sale during August and all three are available to buy at Foulds in Derby and on Amazon.
Win a Higgledy Piggledy Jazz book of your choice by entering the competition.
