Welcome to Issue 1 of Lots for Tots Derbyshire North! Hello, I’m Nadine, Editor of Lots for Tots. I live in Derby & I have 2 girls age 5 & 3. Having spent 2 years spreading the Lots for Tots word around the south of Derbyshire I am now on a mission to make sure every parent in the north gets one too! Launching a new magazine in a new area is a lot of work & I couldn’t have done it without a very special Mummypreneur. Sarah Gregory is Mum to Charlie, age 3 & lives in Bakewell. She approached me about setting up a Lots for Tots for North Derbyshire & has been a big help in filling the magazine & get it out to you. So welcome on board the Lots for Tots train Sarah, it’s going to be an exciting ride! You can help too... if you know of a toddler group, class, event or business that might benefit from the magazine, please let me know. I want to get as much information packed in for you as possible, helping you to survive with the under fives!

The Perfect Place for Little Monkeys Designed specifically with both parents and children in mind, Little Monkeys, is the new purpose built £1m fun-filled themed adventure play and party centre where young children from Matlock, Bakewell, Chesterfield and surrounding areas will get the thrill of their lives. Here, they can scramble through nets, swing on ropes, walk beams and crawl through tubes – in fact they can ‘run-wild’ in complete safety in the most exciting play centre for miles around. Little Monkeys is housed in a fantastic, fully air conditioned building which, at nine metres high on one side, means children can launch themselves from a great height onto the 4-lane Astra slide, the double helix spiral slide or the multi-tiered adventure play structure. The HMS Beagle soft play area is perfect for the little ones with its spiral slide and soft ball cannons.
The building features massive windows which give spectacular views, and includes a well equipped kitchen serving a wide selection of tasty and healthy food appealing to all ages. Parents can therefore relax with a cup of coffee, safe in the knowledge that their children are having a safe and thrilling time. Open every day between 10am and 6pm, a two hour session costs just £4.50 with supervising adults and children under one admitted free. There is also ample free parking next to the play centre. Little Monkeys is also the ultimate party venue, offering stress-free parties in private rooms where children and their friends can enjoy a celebration they will always remember.

Story Corner Here is a little Chinese folk tale- do any of you recognise it? One day a fox encountered a very fierce looking tiger. “I’m going to eat you!” said the tiger. “Oh don’t do that”, said the fox, “why don’t we travel together instead. If you stay behind me and the other animals are not afraid of me, then you can eat me up!” So they travelled the road together. As soon as the other animals saw the tiger, they ran away in fear. “See?” said Fox. “I was walking in front, and they saw me before they could see you! Now who is the scariest animal in this forest?” Tiger hung his head and put his tail between his legs… and ran away… You see he hadn’t realised that everyone had seen them both and that Fox had borrowed Tiger’s own terrible appearance to frighten them away! Sophie Snell is a Derby-based storyteller and will be telling Chinese Tales for all the family at The Chesterfield Festival of Light on 28th & 29th October from 6.30-9.30pm www.sophiesnell.co.uk.

Natural Born Swimmers Swimming with your baby sounds lovely. And it is. In fact, it’s one of the most memorable, thrilling and bonding things the two of you will ever do. But, along
with the fun and great social aspects, there’s a lot of technical stuff to consider if you want to get the most from it. Which is why lots of parents choose to sign up to structured swimming lessons, like those offered by Marie Smith of Water Babies, the largest baby swim school in the East Midlands. Water Babies credits its success to three main ingredients, all of which of which have put them at the forefront of the industry. Extraordinary instructors - world-class professionals, passionately delivering a uniquely structured programme in a fun way that aims to teach parents how to teach their baby to swim. It takes more than 50 hours of work in the pool, at least 25 assessed lessons and 5 lots of internal and external exams to pass to be an instructor for Water Babies. An extraordinary programme of lessons which is carefully structured - you wouldn’t ever want to start watching a film halfway through. “That’s the reason why our courses have a beginning, middle and carefully monitored progression that will see them swimming as soon as they are physically able - usually around thirty months,” explains Marie.
Extraordinary results which speak for themselves. Technical expertise is one of the reasons why we’ve won four national awards - the first baby swimming company to do so. Three of the East Midlands instructors were also nominated as What’s On 4 Little Ones “Outstanding Class Leaders” - something Marie is very proud about!
Water Babies run classes in Chesterfield, Belper and Derby. For more information please visit www.waterbabies.co.uk or phone 01636 815567
