And the ﬁrst Lots for Tots Nottingham of 2017! There is so much to cram into the ﬁrst few months of the year and I’m sure many of you will have fab plans to look forward to! As well as all the great events and activities which are such a key part of Lots for Tots we’ve also got some great feature sections. Perhaps as part of your new year resolutions you want to make time for yourself or even a new employment opportunity. ChildLine Nottingham are keen to hear from people who have a few hours free a week and would like to train as volunteer counsellor to help youngsters in the local area. More information see page 15. If you or one of your friends or family have been touched by miscarriage or stillbirth, please take the time to read about one Lots for Tots reader who was touched by this and has gone on to help other families through the amazing support groups in the area. The Club No One Wants To Be Part Of One in every 227 babies* delivered in the UK was stillborn and 25% of women will have a miscarriage**... “These are shocking statistics and its happening to you, your friends, sisters, partners and colleagues, yet we don’t talk about it. Here in Britain we are more likely to adopt the stiff upper lip, acknowledge ‘how terrible’ it is and move on with our life. But for the 1 in 4 and for the parents of those stillborn babies; their lives have been touched in a way no one else could ever imagine, unless you’ve walked that path yourself. I’m now one of those people! I lost my first child ‘Charlie’ when I was 20 weeks pregnant. We were lucky to ‘catch straight away’ and had a textbook, easy and healthy pregnancy. There were no scares and everything was fine at the initial scans. Then at her 20 week scan she was dead. The words “I’m sorry there’s no heartbeat” will haunt me forever. Our whole world fell apart. This doesn’t happen! A missed miscarriage was the definition of our pain. ‘Very rare’ Doctors told us. ‘I’m sure you will get pregnant again and there’s no reason this should happen again’. 6 months later I was pregnant, only for the pain of loss to be endured a week later when I miscarried at 6 weeks. I was so angry, I still am! Why was my body failing me? What could I do? Where could I get help? Some days I felt like I was losing my mind. Babies and children were everywhere and I was still alone, my arms still empty. One thing I have learned through my terrible experiences is that talking helps and that being around those who understand, who have gone through the same thing, it helps! About a month after my daughter Charlie died I began attending monthly Miscarriage Association and SANDS meetings. I remember at our first meeting my husband and I were offered a cup of tea and we just cried, talked and listened. We weren’t judged. We could see the pain in 12

their eyes too. But we also saw hope, that for some people they did go onto have healthy happy children and that helped us to come to terms with our loss and parent in a completely different way. I knew I was a mum with no baby and SANDS helped me acknowledge my role as a mother and helped me remember her and keep her alive in other ways. A year on and I’m now a committee member for SANDS and been actively involved in other support groups namely ‘Zephyrs’; whose bereavement suite at NUH City Hospital will be opening 1st April 2017 and ‘Nottingham Rainbow Babies’ who offer support and friendship for families parenting after the loss of a baby or child. This is a club that no one wants to be part of. But when you are, you will meet amazing people whose courage and strength inspires you and who will become life long friends.
