Lots for You...
Aimee Sawyer shares the importance of supportive groups & classes
“If there is one thing I have learned since becoming a parent it is that you are not alone. However isolated, frustrated or overwhelmed you may feel at times, as a new mother, there is always someone who knows exactly what you are going through. Becoming a parent for the first time can bring with it a loneliness that is sudden and often unexpected. I will never forget how I felt when my husband went back to work after our eldest was born. Visitors flock to see a family when a new born arrives. However, very quickly everything returns to normal....for everyone else. You are left at home, with this little bundle that is completely and utterly dependent upon you. Nine months of being aware that a baby is on its way is nowhere near enough time to prepare yourself. No amount of time is. During the last stages of my first pregnancy I went to a local antenatal class, just for mums. Who knew attending a meeting of very uncomfortable, big bellied women in a stuffy room during a highly unappreciated early summer heat wave would be one of the best things I ever did? Friendships were formed that day that are still going strong.
Cabin fever can set in pretty quickly in those early days of parenthood but getting out and about can be a daunting prospect. Pyjama days are essential. You have been up most of the night, you are a walking milk bar and you haven’t washed your hair for three days. ‘Friends’ re-runs, cups of tea (most likely drunk when cold) and some serious comfort eating are void of inducing any kind of guilt. But, there is a whole new world waiting to be discovered when you do venture out with baby. Whether it is at your local playgroups, baby and toddler classes, libraries, coffee shops, health centres, etc. there is a real sense of support and understanding. The saying ‘power in numbers’ very much applies to new mothers. Yes we will sit in this public place and talk about the details of giving birth, the joy of cracked nipples and the different stages of baby poo smells without any sense of embarrassment. These things are all consuming in those early stages and to be able to compare stories and chat about problems and solutions suddenly takes away that feeling of isolation as quickly as it appeared. You may find that some groups don’t suit you and baby, but the amount and variety of groups and classes available throughout the county means we are spoilt for choice. Listings of your local baby and toddler friendly groups can be found here in Lots for Tots Nottingham.” Aimee Sawyer lives in Nottingham with her two young boys. She is a writer and blogger, and a regular contributor to the Nottingham Post. Aimee’s blog is full of interesting articles about her personal experiences of parenthood and can be found at: wwweverythingsrosey.blogspot.co.uk

Lots for Parties... Party food ideas and the all important birthday cake...
W
hen it comes to catering for your child’s birthday party it’s best to think ‘what did I like to eat at parties when I was young?’ The favourites that spring to mind are sausage rolls, cheese and pineapple on cocktail sticks stuck in an orange and jelly and ice-cream! The truth is that these stand the test of time, and along with a few extras such as sandwiches in their favourite shapes made by stamping shapes out of bread with cookie cutters, fruit kebabs with a melted chocolate dip, a few bowls of crisps and the ever important fairy cakes, you have an easy to prepare buffet that caters to every child and fulfils the ever important healthy mix criteria. As an alternative for the summer, why not create your own fast food boxes by nestling hot dogs or beef burgers with some chips in a card party box, pop in a little toy to fit your theme and don’t forget the sachets of sauce! Whatever you decide to make make sure you have the right portion size to avoid waste or overeating (and added expense). Plus, whilst it’s a party and sweet treats are generally a given, too many and you will have hyperactive children which can lead to a stressful experience for the adults and in most cases tears for the children as well. With parties one of the most important feature is the birthday cake. You could buy or make a plain sponge, ice it and decorate it very cheaply and it is a fun activity for the kids to do themselves and gives them a great sense of achievement (just like Lissie did...see photo below!). The internet is a great source of inspiration too, so whatever party food you are having keep it simple, keep it in budget and above all keep it fun! Sticky Fingers provide children’s cookery parties across Nottinghamshire as well as personalised birthday cakes and adults cake decorating courses. Lots for Little Minds... Hollies Day Nurseries Forest School Bringing outdoor learning to life...
F
orest School is a nationally recognised innovative approach to education and Hollies Day Nurseries have been running their Forest School since 2011. With two trained Leaders, one at each nursery, and many outdoor spaces around both nurseries including Bestwood Park and a fully secured site at Blackwoods, Hollies take full advantage of running weekly forest school sessions for their children. What is ‘Forest School’? Forest School is a learning ethos that has grown and developed over recent years. It embraces the outdoors as an inspirational learning environment focused on the child’s learning needs rather than specific outcomes. The children explore and experience the natural world on a regular, sustained basis and this is a unique way of building confidence and self esteem, learn new life skills and promotes independence to hands-on learning experiences. At Hollies Day Nurseries Forest School sessions will: Provide opportunities for all children to access the natural world Plan for children’s individual development by understanding and supporting children’s unique and differing learning styles Encourage all children to reflect and review their learning Encourage and nurture children’s own curiosity Support children to investigate and explore their environment Allow children to consider and evaluate risks Value all children’s achievements and contributions Provide challenge and support a ‘can do attitude’ for all children Help children to become independent learners for life
The sessions are child-led by the areas of interest that are generated by the children themselves. This is achieved through observations and review which helps the Forest School Leader to prepare for the following sessions. The Forest School initiative excels in supporting the individual and the ethos acknowledges individual learning processes and supports children at their own pace. It encourages children to push their limits both physically and emotionally yet provides a safe and stimulating environment full of sensory diversity. Iona School Kindergarten is a warm homely environment for 3-6 year olds, providing physical and emotional security through the rhythms and routines of the day and through self-directed play. Free play: True free play, inside and out, is self-initiated and leads to total engagement for prolonged periods. Ring Time: songs, rhymes and social games inspired by nature. Children can express themselves through movement, finger games, stepping, jumping as well as music and drama. Activity of the day: baking, painting, gardening, bread making, wax modelling, drawing and seasonal cooking. Story time: children sit in a circle, a candle is lit and the mood is set for stories to be told. For more information about Iona School Kindergarten, please contact Dominique Allen, Admissions Manager on 0115 9415295. www.theionaschool.org.uk

Win a term of free classes! The Talking Tots programme was written by paediatric Speech and Language therapists and Early Years Specialists. It uses a combination of interactive games, rhymes, stories, songs and activities to gently encourage the development of speech and language, communication and social skills. Classes last 45 minutes and are suitable for ages 1-3 and 3-5 year olds. There are 14 sessions each term and ticket packs can be purchased in quantities of 3 upwards (the more tickets purchased the cheaper the session cost). Tickets are valid for any session in a term at the specified location. Younger siblings attend free of charge and do not require a ticket.
To win a term of Talking Tots classes (14 tickets) answer this question: In which month are Talking Tots running free taster sessions this summer? To enter send your answer to: Talking Tots Nottingham, 1b Gertrude Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham NG2 5BZ or via email to becky@talkingtots.info. Closing date: 31/08/14. The winner will be notified by 10/09/14. The prize is a free term of sessions (14 tickets) to be used in 2014. Good luck!
Private sessions also available for Nurseries and Pre Schools. Email becky@talkingtots.info or call 01157 722 082 for further details.
