A B O U T LOTTA LOV E S M AG A Z I N E Welcome to Whole LOTTA LOVES Magazine! I´m Lotta and I’ve been making this magazine about things that is close to my heart and that I love. Thereof the name LOTTA LOVES. But it’s also a play with the title to the Led Zeppelin song Whole Lotta Love (originally Willie Dixons You Need Love). In this magazine you can read about interior design, clothing style, food, art, travel and much more. I’m a visual being and that is why there are more pictures than text in LOTTA LOVES, hope you f ind some eye candy! I’m not sponsored by any of the companys that I link to. And all photographs are taken

by me except for the shops or websites that I link to in THIS & THAT section. I describe myself as an incurable romantic with a punk heart. And how does that f it together? Isn’t that a contradiction? Maybe. But for me life is both black and white, with a touch of pink! Do you want to know more about me? I’m a photographer and f ilmmaker and at mayalee.se you can read about me and see my work.

ABOUT THIS ISSUE I LOVE autumn, it’s a time for reflection and a more quiet and simple way of living. I LOVE the crisp air and long walks with my family and our dog Siri. I love to cuddle up in the sofa in front of the fire with a cup of tea and a book.

lifetime. It was such a strong feeling that I cried wandering the narrow streets early in the morning to catch the sunrise at the Piazza San Marco.

I LOVE to split and stack firewoods. I always take photos of woodpiles, my husband calls me the Log Lady… You that has watched the TV serie Twin Peaks know what I mean… The style reportage about the girl with the fire leaves isn’t a fashion story, more an inspiration how to get a autumn touch to your look. My grandmother Olga LOVED to cook and bake. And just a few weeks ago I found her old recipes! So in this issue she lets you to make her blueberry pie. The recipe is from 1936 when she went to country house hold school. I few years ago in the end of September I visited Venice in Italy. It was instant LOVE. In the small town Torshälla about an hour from Stockholm Rebecca and her family lives in a beautiful town house. They have created a cozy retro eclectic feeling throughout the entire house. A lot of the wallpaper they have found at local f lea markets. And f lea markets are the main source of many of the furniture and home decor.

Some of the things is also handmade, just look at the cool bed made of reused wooden planks in their bedroom. At Christmas they have a really long handmade table also made of reused planks, where all the family and friends can gather around. The family have an environmental friendly approach to interior decoration. They shop at f lea markets and

antique shops and try to reuse old tin cans and wooden boxes and so on, for example to grow herbs in or use as f lowerpots.

Wouldn’t it be nice to live in a home like this? Now you can, at least for a while. This cool home is for rent at Airbnb! Check it out!.

The eco friendly interest has also led them to open up a raw food bar and kitchen (Kvass Bar & Råkök) in the nearby town Eskilstuna. All the food is vegetarian and the main focus is on ecological raw food.

VENICE MADE ME CRY

Ciao!

I have a lot of friends that visited Venice and some of them was just - “Yeah it was ok.” - “So expensive!” “So much tourists” But non of them talked about the beauty and how you could feel the history in this one of a kind city. It was a warm and sunny day in the end of September. I jumped on a waterbus to get to my hotel that was not far from the Rialto bridge. Ok, so I don’t want to give you the link to the hotel because it was the worst hotel room I ever stayed in! But it didn’t matter too much because I only had 24 hours in Venice before I was going to Verona to shoot a wedding. So I was going to get the most out of Venice in that time. I got there in the afternoon and after just leaving my bags at the hotel room I was out on the streets with my camera. I stayed out all night taking pictures and eating pizza of course. I think it is a nice way to explore the city at night, you see and discover things that you don’t during the day. You can meet the locals, just try to go off the beaten track. A really small restaurant, maybe just a hole in the wall with one or two tables outside, I promise you, it will have the best food! I had set my alarm clock really early to get up and catch the sunrise at the Piazza San Marco. I suddenly started to cry wandering the narrow streets. Not sobbing, just tears running slowly down my cheeks. It was so beautiful and that feeling that I’ve been in Venice before grew stronger and I couldn’t ignore it any longer.

I could almost see Casanova and Vivaldi, see the commerce at the port. Fishermans with their catch, people selling silk and spices… I got a scent of a perfume, a woman with a dress that was swaying and rustling. Had I lived here in a previous life, in another lifetime? Or is my imagination really strong, and maybe I’m a bit crazy? Even though I got up really early and thought that I should be alone in the square, there were people there that had the same agenda as me. When I got to Piazza San Marco there was a few people, a man that swept the streets whistling a beautiful melody, tourist with their cameras, people off to work and a bridal couple taking pictures in the beautiful sunrise. The rest of the day I was wandering around, looking at the fantastic architecture, visited some art galleries, and eating gelato of course! I took a trip to the island Lido who has a fantastic beach that is very long. It was a warm and sunny day so I dipped my toes in the Adriatic sea. At the evening I was heading back to the hotel and stopped and looked at the gondolas. I had decided that I wouldn’t take a ride in one of those. First of all it is very expensive, and I knew it was one of those tourist traps… And I wasn’t that kind of tourist, you know, the one that only take charter trips, have their own Swedish coffee with them and so on… But… After a few glasses of wine and a really cute gondolier. What’s a girl gonna do? You only live once, or do you? Drink the wine, eat the gelato, ride the gondola! Arrivederci!

41 |

My love for Venice happened at an instant. As soon as I sat my feet on the ground I got the most familiar feeling. I’ve been there before. It was a very strong feeling but I didn’t take it serious, because I had never been in Venice, I hadn’t even been to Italy for Christ sake!

GRANDMA OLGAS BLUEBERRY PIE

Grandma Olga was almost always in the kitchen or in the garden taking care of all the vegetables an fruit. Grandpa Ture listening to the radio and doing crosswords or being at his woodwork shed. And sometimes he played card with us, always cheating. When grandma was baking we kids got to help out. Licking the bowl was the favourite part as I remember it… Grandma always had an apron on. I’ve learned that she grew up on a big farm and that she was used to baking and cooking from a young age. She had the most beautiful handwriting. And as I recall it she could write equally good with both hands. Sometimes she had a terrible headache and had to lay down in a quiet and dark room for a couple of hours. I also remember that her f ingers often was coloured by blueberries and maybe this is the reason why I choose to share the Bluberry pie recipe with you in this issue? When she was 20 years old in 1936 she went to a country house hold school. A couple of weeks ago I found some recipe books from that time. Sometimes it’s just the ingredients and how to put the dish together. Not how much heat the oven is to be or how long it should be cooking. And some times it says, “cook over the f ire”. And then you realise how long ago this was… I think going to the country house hold school Benninge was a big deal for grandma. It was her only education she got except elementary school that only was for 6 years at that time. When I look at the old pictures gathered in a memory photograph album that is from the school years I see a lot of friendship and laughter. She was marrying my grandpa a couple of years later and got two kids, my dad and his older brother. And was a housewife the rest of her life. I haven’t really thought of that until now… What did she think about her life? What dreams did she have? Did it turned out how she imagine it? She passed away years ago, and now I will never know… But I know that she would have been proud of me, and happy that you guys can make her Blueberry pie!

BLUEBERRY PIE (6 - 8 SERVINGS)

Ingredients Pastry 200 gr butter 200 gr flour 50 gr almonds 1 teaspoon cardamom Filling 3/4 - 1 liter blueberrys 1 deciliter sugar 3 tablespoons of potato flour or cornstarch 1 large egg, lightly beaten Directions: 1. Mix the flour, cardamom and the finely chopped almonds together in a large bowl. Add the butter and some water if necessary. Divide the dough in half. Wrap each tightly in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours. 2. Stir the blueberries, cornstarch/potato floured and sugar together in a large bowl. Set filling aside as the oven preheats. 3. Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F). 4. Roll out the chilled pie dough: On a floured work surface, roll out one of the discs of chilled dough (keep the other one in the refrigerator). Turn the dough about a quarter turn after every few rolls until you have a circle 12 inches in diameter. Carefully place the dough into a pie dish. Tuck it in with your fingers, making sure it is smooth. Pre-bake for 10 minutes. Spoon the filling into the crust, leaving any excess liquid in the bowl. 5. Roll the dough into a circle that is 12 inches diameter. Using a pastry wheel, sharp knife, or pizza cutter, cut strips 1-2 inches wide. Carefully thread the strips over and under one another, pulling back strips as necessary to weave. Press the edges of the strips into the bottom pie crust edges to seal. Use a small knife to trim off excess dough. Crimp the edges with a fork, if desired. 6. Lightly brush the top of the pie crust with the egg. Sprinkle the top with a little coarse sugar, if desired. 7. Place the pie in the oven and bake for about 30 minutes, take it out when it has a nice brown color. Serve with custard sauce or vanilla ice cream.

GET IN TO THAT AUTUMN MOOD

Autumn is my favourite time of year. I get to have my knitted thick socks. Drink loads of tea. Take long walks in the crispy air. Sit by the f ire with a book or a magazine. Autumn, it’s a time for ref lection and a more quiet and simple way of living. Listening to music, see a good tv serie at Netf lix, just being cozy at home is something that I value. In the autum I get new energy to take up my own personal projects, like my printshop. Taking new pictures and putting up some new prints and posters, like the Pretty Plum Poem you see at the bottom of the page. Autumn for me is also to have time for things I usually don’t. Like learning new skills. I love to take online classes in various subjects. I have made you a little list of places where you can educate yourself, for example, art, design, photography, illustration, crafts and much more. 63 |

I have listed some of my favourite shops. I love to shop local or from small business owners. I think they all need some support. How to make your own tea is one of the things I have made a little tutorial about. And here to the left is some tips on how you get in to that autumn mood. Hope you will enjoy! I started to follow Jennys work years ago. We have daughters in the same ages and I loved to follow their family in Jennys blog.

FGL is a store that blend the traditional Indian hand block printing process with a Nordic Coastal feel.

She is a fantastic photographer with her own special expression. I really like her interior photos that she takes for various interior magazines.

I love to follow FGLs work, especially the trips to India where a lot of their clothes are beeing manufactured in. And now the making of an physical shop in Varberg, Sweden.

Mokkasin has the most amazing blog! And a while ago she had a really stunning shop with lots of things both for the little ones and the big ones.

Since I was a child we always had a f ireplace in our home. At my f irst childhood home we had a tiled stove that is very common in old Swedish houses. I LOVE those old stoves, I think they are work of art. So I take a lot of pictures of tiled stoves, wood f ireplaces,

camp f ires, kitchen wood stoves, wood logs and f irewood piles and so on. Yep! That is why husband is calling me the Log Lady... If you watched the TV series Twin Peaks you know what I mean…

There is a Swedish saying that the wood is warming you twice, when you are chopping it and then when you have the f ire. We have a small wood behind our house and this summer we decided to chop down a couple of trees to get some more of that evening sun. The trees was quite high and because we have our house and my little studio pretty close we decided to take help from a professional woodcutter. I got so impressed by the precision that he calculated where to fell the timber. It looked so easy! But I know it isn’t, it just looked that way. It is like that with all the people that is good or skilled in its own profession, like artists and craftsmen. They make it look so easy! So this summer we have been splitting and stacking f irewoods. It is the most satisfying chore. I like to do some physical labor from time to time. I work as photographer and f ilmmaker and sure it can be some what physical but lets face it, I sit by the computer a LOT! So this makes a nice change from editing and paperwork. For me it is almost like mindfulness, a repetitive meditative motion.

When I’m chopping wood I think about old times. It is an ancient way for the people of the north to chop fresh wood and then let it dry to be used the next winter. I think about how they lived in the old days. I think of my grandparents Olga and Ture and their old kitchen wood stove. When I was a little child and had been out playing in the cold weather I got some hot chocolate heated on the stove and grandma put my feet up at the open oven door. The scent from newly chopped wood is fantastic! And to sit and look at the f ire is very contemplative and relaxing. With a cup of tea and a f ire you don’t need much more. I think trees in all forms are beautiful. So I will continue to take photos of them. And I’m f ine with being called the log lady, I am a bit mad, just like her. But like the quote from Alice in Wonderland “You’re mad. Bonkers. Off your head... but I’ll tell you a secret... all of the best people are…
