ANSWERED PRAYER The mission of Truett McConnell University is to equip students to fulfill the Great Commission by fostering a Christian worldview through a biblically-centered education in a family friendly environment. That is our mission for each and every student who attends TMU.
In September 1944, in the midst of World War II, four pastors and three laypeople gathered in the basement of First Baptist Church of Blairsville, Georgia, imploring the Lord to begin a new college in the mountains of North Georgia. These faithful Christians believed the education of a new generation through a distinctively biblical worldview was integral in serving churches by raising up “mountain preachers” as well as missionaries throughout the region. After kneeling before their Creator (Psalm 95:6), all seven were assured that God would begin a new college founded upon the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20). One of the seven prayer warriors even gave the first gift: one dollar. On July 23, 1946, Truett-McConnell Junior College was chartered by the state of Georgia. From the generous gift of more than 400 acres by Joseph Walker House to the $25,000 given by the Georgia Baptist Convention and $90,000 given by the city of Cleveland, this University would not be here today without the unfettered sacrifice of so many faithful believers.
mountain to faithfully raise up a new generation of believers who will share the only hope of heaven, Jesus Christ (John 14:6), as they fulfill the callings on their lives (Ephesians 4:1). While thousands of students have walked our hallways, lived in our dorms, worshipped in our chapel services, and earned their degrees, there are many more thousands whom God is calling to the mountain. And, as the Lord is raising up a new generation of students, He is also raising up a new generation of supporters, those ready to fight on their knees and with their treasures to ensure that this mountain will be, as TMU alum and biographer described, “a light in the mountains” for the next seventy-five years if the Lord tarries His coming. I hope you will join us in this hallowed endeavor. The next generation is counting on you. Truth is Immortal.
As we celebrate our 75th Anniversary of our charter, we are more confident than ever that the Lord desires this sacred
Dr. Emir F. Caner, President

TO EQUIP STUDENTS While growing up in Islam-dominated Egypt, Pastor Mokhles Hanna never imagined that his life’s journey would someday lead him to pastor an Arabicspeaking church in America. Hanna’s parents came to know Christ through the work of missionaries, and because of this, Hanna was introduced to the gospel and accepted Christ as a young teenager. However, Hanna and his family faced daily persecution for their Christian beliefs. At that time in Egypt, persecution against Christians ranged from daily name calling to kidnappings and church shootings. Hanna showed a tattoo of a cross he bears on his wrist, a marking Christian parents in Egypt often put on their children in case they were ever kidnapped and forced to convert to Islam. Because of the shape of this cross marking, Christians in Egypt were often called “four feathers.”
Egyptian Pastor Returns to College to Strengthen Ministry

By pursuing a Master of Arts in Theology at TMU, Pastor Hanna is finally able to achieve a dream he has held onto even from the time he and his family experienced persecution in Egypt.
While Hanna was in college, fanatic Muslims organized a shooting at his church, during which the church guard was killed. Hanna said, “I still remember the memory, trying to escape from the shooting.” Because of the constant persecution in his country, Hanna started applying for the United States Visa lottery. In 2004, after applying for nine years, Hanna and his wife finally won the Visa lottery, just 15 days after his oldest daughter’s birth. “I wanted to escape the persecution not for myself, but for my children,” Hanna said. In 2006, Hanna became an assistant pastor at Jesus the Light of the World Arabic Church, in Lilburn, Georgia. Over the past 15 years, the church has grown from a small group of eight people to nearly 60 members, many of whom come from an Islamic background.
In 2020, Pastor Hanna knew it was time to pursue the degree he had always wanted to help better educate himself for his ministry. He soon began the process of registering for classes to pursue a Master of Arts in Theology at Truett McConnell University. Even from his first class, the Doctrine of Revelation, Pastor Hanna immediately related his coursework to his ministry. The class helped him better explain the theories of revelation and inspiration of the Bible that many people with a Muslim background often question. Additionally, Pastor Hanna said his hermeneutics course transformed the way he approaches a passage when preparing for a sermon. “I am preaching almost twice a week, so I need to be more qualified to enter into a passage and present it well. The class corrected the way I preach and prepare my sermons.”

HOMELESS OUTREACH MOVE TEAM FOSTE R C AR E M OV E T E A M
The Homeless Outreach Move Team is seeking to minister to the homeless community in Cleveland, Athens, and Atlanta.
The Foster Care Move Team minsters to both the children in the foster care system of Georgia as well as the families who choose to serve through fostering in their homes. This ministry can look like anything from watching children to raking leaves for a family. These acts of love and service are opening doors for the gospel to be shared with both foster children and the foster families.
The heartbeat of this team is to listen to the stories of people impacted by homelessness and share the story of Jesus with them, while also seeing that their basic and immediate needs are met in a sustainable way. “Many times, ministry comes across as a sweet and fun thing – and it is,” said Cam Lewis, Homeless Move Team leader. “Yet, it can also be dirty. You will see heartache and face uncomfortable moments, but as Christians, we are called to plant the seeds of the gospel."
The MOVE Team has served the Foster Parents Association in White County by providing childcare during parent meetings. They have also partnered with Families 4 Families, an organization in Snellville that allowed students to babysit foster kids during monthly date night events for parents. During the bi-weekly meetings, the team gathers to pray over the foster care community, needs of specific families, and personal requests. The meetings have unified the group and have also brought to light connections several students have for potential ministry opportunities.
“Fear should not get in the way because when you have those passions and when you have that vision, and you feel inadequate, the Lord is going to give you what you need in that moment.” - Mary Katelyn Wood, Foster Care Move Team

PURSUE MENTAL HEALTH MOVE TEAM The Pursue Mental Health Move Team is an accountability group of students who gather for Bible studies and fight against depression and anxiety together. This Move Team is also praying for future opportunities to reach out to those in facilities and hospitals who struggle with mental health. Sarah-Cate Bray, a sophomore, struggled with her mental health as a teenager. It was during this low point in her life that Bray found salvation in Jesus Christ. Bray said that because of her past experiences, she felt a passion and burden for those who struggle with mental health, which led to the start of the Pursue Mental Health Move Team. 5

Meet Alexa Miller BA in Psychology, '21 MA in Global Studies, target '22
When the Lord impressed upon my heart to study psychology for my undergrad, I sought to go to a university that taught from a biblical worldview. Having attended a public liberal arts college previously, I was well-aware of the importance of finding a school that taught with the intentional aim to glorify God — especially in the classroom. Rather than emphasizing human reasoning as the core
of academic study, I craved teaching that compared and contrasted everything to the absolute truth of scripture. This scriptural lens is what I have found to be the most important factor at Truett McConnell. As someone who wants to go into ministry and has a passion for God’s Word, I was thankful to have the opportunity to learn and study my major alongside fellow believers who welcomed and
BY FOSTERING A CHRISTIAN WORLDVIEW regularly implemented spiritual conversation into each of my classes. Because what I had learned integrated biblical truth with academic study, I graduated feeling empowered and equipped to understand people and meet them where they are for the sake of the gospel. At this moment, I am continuing my education at TMU, pursuing a Master of Arts in Global Studies. Being halfway into the program, I am often grateful for the opportunity to further my education at the same University that offers the biblical framework and class environment I treasured in my undergrad years. As I strive to finish this endeavor, I trust and pray that God will use all of my education at Truett McConnell University to seek the lost and point them to Christ — whether it is through local church work or overseas missions. 7

IN A FAMILY FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT Prayer & TEAtime
When Estine Uys started working at the World Missions Center (WMC) at Truett McConnell University (TMU), she realized that many of the students who were taking mission trips overseas often had not tried a single cup of hot tea. As a South African, Uys knew how important drinking tea was – and still is – in other cultures around the world, so she resolved to expose students to other types of tea besides Southern sweet tea. For several years now, students have gathered weekly with Mrs. Uys for Prayer & Teatime.
Daily Life at the WMC As the Administrative Assistant and Foreign Missions Counselor for the World Missions Center, Mrs. Uys coordinates mission trips and the WMC's Catalyst events that are designed to foster missional community among students. In 2014, Uys started Prayer & Teatime to gather students to pray for current missions teams and alumni missionaries who serve all over the world. 11
Each week, she introduces students to a new type of tea from around the world and brings homemade scones or other treats to share. “There is nothing like praying together in the name of Jesus and sharing some good conversations over a cup of tea,” said Mrs. Uys.
Admiring Students Psychology major Savannah Campbell has faithfully attended Prayer & Teatime during her time at TMU. “Mrs. Uys has so much wisdom and truly gives the best advice. She knows so much about the Bible that it truly blows my mind! Even from the first time I visited teatime and heard Mrs. Uys pray, I knew that this was a lady who truly fears and serves the Lord faithfully.” TMU alumna Maggie Reeves said, "Mrs. Uys was a major source of encouragement to me during my four years at TMU. No matter what we discussed in groups or one-on-one, she always turned to God in prayer first. I knew she was someone I could trust and who genuinely cared for me."
Tea-riffic Memories One of the happiest memories that Mrs. Uys has of Prayer & Teatime is that of Leighton and Cory West, who first met at the World Missions Center and started attending teatime

together. The two later married, and Cory now serves as a youth pastor at First Baptist Church in Murphy, North Carolina.
After students have prayed together for mission trip funds, Mrs. Uys has seen envelopes of money pour onto her desk to meet those needs.
Mrs. Uys also mentioned that recently, more male students have started to attend the Prayer & Teatime and she is happy to see them step into spiritual leadership.
"I am humbled by the way the Lord is using me for His purpose right where I am." One cup of tea at a time, Mrs. Uys is changing lives at TMU and around the world.
