This issue of RIO Magazine takes you through three fabulous months of summer. Beginning with the Fourth of July—the pinnacle of summertime celebrations, followed by August with brilliant ways to stay cool and entertained along the River Walk, and finally September, which for most folks marks the end of summer, but not here in San Antonio. We keep the party going! Along the more than 15 miles of sidewalks lining the beautiful San Antonio River, you will find all the quintessential summer activities to make this your most wonderful yet.

July kicks off with Stars, Stripes & Lights, where patriotic décor lines the banks of the River Walk in a spectacular display and a befitting honor for

the men and women who serve our country. The weekend’s highlight is the free Armed Forces River Parade, presented by Budweiser and dedicated to all branches of our military.

Then keep the celebration going all summer long! Whether your idea of fun is checking out the local bar and restaurant scene, marveling at live theatre performances, visiting historical sites or strolling the River Walk during the Golden Hour, you will find all of that and more. Culinaria Restaurant Weeks are Back!

As one of the largest cities in the United States, we are truly blessed to have an abundance of outstanding chefs, restaurants and culinary events to choose from every day of the year. So much so, it can sometimes be a nail-biting dilemma—paella verses barbecue or burgers verses tacos. It is always a tough call.

Coming up are two of San Antonio’s most anticipated events that should make your dining decisions easier than normal: the River Walk’s Stella Artois Drift and Dine and Culinaria’s Restaurant Weeks.

STELLA ARTOIS DRIFT & DINE

The San Antonio River Walk’s Stella Artois Drift & Dine promises a night to remember as you enjoy some of your favorite River Walk restaurants and undoubtedly discover new ones as you float the labyrinthine river on a colorful decorated boat and take in the breathtaking sights and sounds of our one-of-a kind downtown.

This year’s event takes place September 5-7 from 6:00 to 9:30 pm. Stella Artois Drift & Dine guests will get the opportunity to nosh on dishes from six fantastic River Walk restaurants—a different line-up every night. Luxuriate in the sunset as you float along and stop to sample a variety of flavors. Each boat carries 14-16 people, so bring along your friends and family for this extraordinary culinary extravaganza. You can purchase individual tickets or reserve an entire boat.

The Kick-Off Party (check-in) takes place each evening from 5:00 to 6:00pm at the International Center on the River Level, where you will find live music, drinks and a complimentary photo booth for IG selfies to commemorate your special night! Additionally, you can drift and dine anytime you like throughout the year on GO RIO’s Dinner Cruises, including private dining or group dining experiences. They also offer a cocktail cruise, which makes for a fun way to start a River Walk excursion with friends and family.

A multitude of premier River Walk restaurants take part in the cruises, including Paesanos Riverwalk, Acenar, Landry’s Seafood House, Casa Rio, On The Bend Oyster Bar, Boudro’s Texas Bistro, Biga on the Banks, Range, The Esquire Tavern...the list goes on. The GO RIO website has all the details.

This city loves a great deal and there is no better opportunity to sample the wonderful array of cuisines from so many different restaurants than during Culinaria’s bi-annual Restaurant Weeks event, during which top restaurants offer special discounted prix fixe menus of savory delights.

Culinaria is a nonprofit group that promotes San Antonio’s fantastic food and wine scene. The next Restaurant Weeks event takes place on August 12-26 and showcases a long list of marvelous restaurants. During the two weeks, each restaurant will be offering a unique three-course menu for lunch and/or dinner. The cost is typically lower than what you would pay on an average day and, depending upon the restaurant, is either $20 or $30 for lunch and either $35, $45 or $55 for dinner. These reservations go fast, so be sure to book soon.

Although the comprehensive list of restaurants is extensive, hot spots on the River Walk include, but may not be limited to, Ambler Texas Kitchen + Cocktails, Biga on the Banks, Box St. All Day, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., Burgerteca, Carriqui, Chart House, Dorrego’s at Hotel Valencia, Dough Pizzeria at Hemisfair, Fiume Pizzeria & Wine Bar, Four Brothers Southern Provisions, Joe’s Crab Shack, Landry’s Seafood House, Morton’s Steakhouse, Ostra, Rainforest Cafe, Saltgrass Steakhouse, Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery and The River’s Edge Cafe + Patio Bar.

Now, if you are like me, you are going to want to line up as many of these as you can, but unfortunately there are not enough meals in the day to dine at each and every participating restaurant, so let me narrow it down a bit for you.

Biga on the Banks , being one of San Antonio’s most longstanding fine dining restaurants, is a no brainer for a phenomenal meal, especially at this rate. With a stunning dining room and a patio overlooking the downtown River Walk near S. St. Mary’s Street, Chef Bruce Auden always presents a versatile, ever-changing menu of New American fare, such as Roasted American Red Snapper, Slow Cooked Angus Beef Denver, Roasted Australian Lamb Rack and 11 Spiced South Texas Antelope and Lockhart Quail. Hopefully, their renowned Sticky Toffee Pudding with English custard will also make an appearance on the prix fixe menu.

To get your Italian fix and some of the best Neapolitan pizza in Texas, make your ressies for Fiume Pizzeria & Wine Bar, located in the Hilton Palacio del Rio. They call their take on the Neapolitan-style pizza “Texapoletana™” and source all local vendors that exemplify the unique legacy of Texas. From a classic Margherita pizza to their Sweet Texas Heat with white sauce, applewood smoked bacon, hot Calabrian pepper, basil and local honey, and other enticing combinations, you simply cannot go wrong here.

For something the whole family will love, visit Burgerteca in Southtown along the River Walk Mission Reach, which has a vibrant, laid-back atmosphere, and Mexican-inspired burgers like the Al Pastor (beef patty, al pastor seasoning, grilled pineapple, tomatillo ketchup, Manchego cheese, onion, cabbage and cilantro), house margs in all your favorite flavors and even yummy paletas.

AZTEC THEATRE

The historical gem found in the heart of downtown San Antonio began life as a grand movie theatre before it was converted into the premier entertainment venue it is today. Located at the corner of Commerce and St. Mary’s, the Aztec opened its doors in 1926 and boasts a rich architectural history. The stunning three-ton chandelier that hangs in the lobby is reason enough to visit the venue, as it was considered “the largest chandelier in the largest state of the Union” at the time it was designed, and is a whopping two stories tall and twelve feet wide. But aside from its significant cinematic history and historical beauty, the Aztec is still a place to find great entertainment this summer in the likes of GRAMMY®-nominated Blues artist Kenny Wayne Shepherd in July; Heavy Metal band Crutch in August; and the comedy of Las Mas Masters: Rogelio Ramos & José Luis Zagar in September, just to name a few. Freddie Mercury may be gone but his essence lives on in Gary Mullen and The Works, a premier Queen tribute band whose raucous replication of the band’s iconic songs and its legendary front man—exuberantly embodied by Mullen—see to it the show does go on. The band will be in San Antonio to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their world-renowned “One Night of Queen” live stage show that pays homage to the stage theatrics and music of Queen. The concert is headed by Freddie Mercury imitator Gary Mullen, who along with his band, has performed to sold-out audiences around the world.

Comedian, writer and producer Cristela Alonzo made history as the first Latina woman to create, write and star in a network TV show, “Cristela.” She developed a comedy special for Netflix Lower Classy and served as a fan-favorite guest host on ABC’s “The View.” Alonzo uses humor to shine a light on bigger issues, and makes us laugh while she opens our eyes. Summer nights become movie nights under the stars at The Will Naylor Smith River Walk Plaza, known as Will’s Plaza, where the public is invited to grab their lawn chairs and blankets, and enjoy a free screening of a film on the plaza’s 32-foot LED video wall, courtesy of the Tobin Center and H-E-B. This summer’s upcoming films will feature the Lin Manuel Miranda musical, “In the Heights” on July 14; “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” on August 11; and the animated family classic “Up” on September 8. Showtimes are at 8:00pm. Chairs are available at the venue as well as a full concession and bar. No outside food, drinks or pets are allowed on the plaza. Boogie nights are always the best in town at the San Antonio Zoo during its annual Jungle Boogie Nights celebration. Get ready for a roaring good time with live music, dance parties, animal interactions, and food and fun for the whole family. Last year’s celebration featured a different theme each week, such as Boy Band Night, Fixin’ to 2 Step, Disco Boogie, 80’s Night

and Beach Bash. Each week also featured a Dance Party that kicked off at 6:30pm on the Great Lawn, along with free commemorative buttons and giveaways. This event is included with admission and is free for Zoo members. Visit the Zoo’s website for details.

Funnyman George Lopez is bringing his hilarious stand-up to the Alamo City during his “Alllriiiighhtt!” tour. The actor and comedian turned children’s book author can also be seen in the upcoming superhero film “Blue Beetle” slated for theatrical release in August.

Chicago is in Texas and feeling stronger every day with a new album of songs to bring to area fans. The iconic group recently released their 38th studio album, “Born for This Moment,” that includes the hit single, “If This is Goodbye.” Audiences will also be treated to decades of hits, such as “If You Leave Me Now,” “Color My World” and “You’re the Inspiration.”

If you are looking for some nightlife served with a great cocktail, check out Merkaba, the cocktail lounge and nightclub that infuses drink flavors and decor inspired by the rich history of San Antonio. Visit the Zoo before it opens to enjoy an all-youcare-to-eat breakfast while you watch the animals, snap pictures with these amazing creatures and enjoy exclusive presentation from an animal care specialist. If you would prefer to let the animals do the eating, go behind the scenes to get up-close and personal with hippos, rhinos and tortoises through the Zoo’s Behind the Scenes tours. Restoration is an art in San Antonio. From the Alamo, where a transformative restoration is taking place, to the stately old homes and history of the King William District to the stone paths and bridges of the iconic River Walk, San Antonio’s rich history gives visitors endless opportunities to step into the city’s colorful past.

Two of the most magnificent restorations—the San Antonio Missions and the Mission Reach of the River Walk—are inextricably linked in history. Today, thanks to decades—even centuries— of preservation and restoration efforts, they preserve vital elements of the past, and bear witness to the restorative power of preservation.

THE SPANISH MISSIONS

San Antonio was first named in 1691 when an expedition of Spanish soldiers and priests came upon a verdant settlement of the indigenous Payaya tribe, close to a clear, flowing river. The Spaniards called the natives the “Tejas” people— the Payaya word for “friends.” They christened the place and the river that ran through it San Antonio, since it was June 13, the feast day of St. Anthony in the Catholic Church. In 1718, Franciscan missionary priest Father Antonio Olivares dedicated the first mission church at San Pedro Springs, the source of a creek that ran into the river, where water and fish were abundant. (San Pedro Park, established around the springs by a land grant from the king of Spain, is the second oldest public park in the U.S. Only Boston Commons is older.)

The simple hut that was the first church of Mission San Antonio de Valero was moved twice in the following years. Finally, it was rebuilt with stone in today’s downtown, on the bend of the river close to the Spanish military presidio and the little settlement of the Villa San Antonio de Bexar. It was nicknamed “el Alamo” for the cottonwood trees that grew nearby.

The river was the key to settlement, providing water for an elaborate system of acequias— hand-dug irrigation channels for farmland. In 1720, a second mission—Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo—was established two miles downstream from the Alamo. In 1731, three more missions—Nuestra Senora de la Purisima Concepción de Acuna, San Francisco de la Espada and San Juan Capistrano—were added downstream nearby. A few priests at each mission worked with the indigenous people to build fortified compounds where they could all live, with workshops and farming supplies.

In “Saving San Antonio: The Preservation of a Heritage,” historian Lewis Fisher writes that by 1745, more than 2,000 Indians had been baptized, and nearly 900 of them were living in the missions. They had more than 5,000 cattle, 3,000 sheep and goats and 257 horses, and farmed mainly corn, beans and cotton. But as Spanish settlers moved in, the Indians gradually left, and by 1824 all five missions were abandoned.

The Alamo served as a fort, first to Mexican soldiers in their war for independence from Spain, then famously in the Texas war for independence from Mexico. After the Battle of the Alamo in 1836, the property was abandoned again. It was used as a military garrison for a while, then leased by the Catholic Church to a grocery store. By the turn of the century, interest in preservation started growing. The state of Texas was convinced to buy the Alamo. After a century of preservation by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, the state took over again, and the Alamo Trust is overseeing an ambitious restoration of the historic site. The four missions downstream remained active Catholic parishes, and gradually, with help from the Bexar County Historical Society, the Catholic archdiocese and the powerful San Antonio Conservation Society, restoration efforts on them have continued,

ramping up greatly in recent years. In 1978, the U.S. Congress created The San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, managed by the National Park Service. Millions of visitors started coming to see them, and funding for ambitious restoration was easier to find.

The next step was a campaign to designate all five missions as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2015, the prestigious international organization recognized San Antonio’s five missions and some additional areas as “the most complete and intact example of the Spanish crown’s efforts to colonize, evangelize and defend the northern frontier of New Spain during the period when Spain controlled the largest empire in the world.” The San Antonio Spanish Missions are the only World Heritage Site in Texas, and one of just 24 in the United States—including the Grand Canyon and the Statue of Liberty.

The San Antonio Missions National Historical Park operates a Visitors Center for the Missions National Historical Park at Mission San José. Currently, planning is well underway for a larger, more comprehensive World Heritage Center just north of Mission San José at the old Mission Marquee Drive-In Plaza, which also occupies a spot on the National Historical Register.

The Catholic Church still owns the four mission churches and supports their parishes and building restorations through the nonprofit Las Misiones foundation. All are welcome to regular services in English and Spanish, held both indoors and outside. The Mariachi Masses at Missions San José and Concepción are musical, memorable and free—a delightful way to spend a Sunday morning, regardless of your religion.

This spring the Archdiocese opened the El Camino de San Antonio Missions Center behind Mission Concepción. It is a partnership linking the San Antonio Spanish Missions with the other World Heritage Camino—the Camino de Santiago Compostela, a 400-plus-mile pilgrimage trail to the world-famous cathedral of Compostela, Spain. This brand-new Padre Margil Pilgrimage Center will provide visitors with information and support for El Camino de San Antonio Missions: a 30-km pilgrimage, which will count as part of the “Ingles Route” of Spain’s El Camino de Santiago de Compostela. Peregrinos, or pilgrims, will have the opportunity to have their Camino Pilgrim passports stamped and obtain their San Antonio Compostela for credit in Spain.

MISSION REACH

From Mission Concepción, it is just a few blocks up Mitchell Street to San Antonio’s Confluence Park—a streamlined gem of an environmentally fascinating park at the confluence of the city’s two most historic waterways—the San Antonio River and San Pedro Creek.

The San Antonio River Authority and its non-profit River Foundation created Confluence Park. The

River Authority’s first focus is on flood control, but over the years it has added many projects, and the Mission Reach of the San Antonio River Walk is the most magnificent and visible one. Twenty years and more than $384 million dollars have gone into the San Antonio River Improvements Project that created today’s Mission Reach—about nine miles of infrastructure and ecosystem restoration on the San Antonio River south of downtown. In partnership with the U.S. Corps of Engineers and Bexar County, the River Authority transformed a part of the river that had basically become a neglected drainage ditch into an incredible place for canoeing and kayaking, hiking and biking, bird watching, fishing and much more. The riparian woodland restoration included planting more than 20,000 native trees and shrubs and 317 native plants and grasses. Monarch butterflies and hundreds of bird species, from Lazuli buntings to bald eagles, migrate through this part of Texas, and restoring their native habitat has increased their numbers and made the area a paradise for birders.

The Mission Trails hike and bike trails—part of the 82-mile Howard Peak Greenway Trails system, follow the Mission Reach banks, and the River Foundation’s historic and artistic Portals along the trails reconnect the river to the four Spanish missions that drew life from it centuries ago. A river has always run through San Antonio’s history. These days, it flows freely again.

It does not get more patriotic than a military parade during Independence Day weekend in Military City USA. The Armed Forces River Parade is dedicated to the men and women from all branches of the United States Armed Forces. Red, white and blue decorated floats carrying military personnel, and numerous businesses and non-profits who honor and support active and retired military, cruise through the downtown portion of the River Walk beginning at the International Center at 203 S. St. Mary’s Street. This free parade is a 40-minute celebration of service.

View the parade for free on the downtown section of the River Walk, and for even more fun, make a reservation at your favorite River Walk restaurant for prime patio viewing of the parade while enjoying delicious food and cold drinks! You are also welcome to bring folding chairs and sit along the parade route (parade route map is available on website). Please do not block pedestrian traffic, and come out early to secure a good spot.

MEMORABLE MEMORIALS

There are other ways to pay respect to the men and women who have served our country. The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts was built on the site of the San Antonio Municipal Auditorium — which was built in 1926 as a World War I Memorial. Today it is a grand center for culture, arts and entertainment.

For a more somber moment of reflection, visit the military memorial sites downtown. You can cross the infamous line in the sand at the Alamo. Or cross Auditorium Circle, just steps from the Tobin Center entrance, to Veterans Memorial Plaza, where visitors are given space to honor those who have served and those who did not return. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a heroic bronze sculpture that shows a Marine Corps radio operator lending aid to his fallen friend. Inside the “Hill 881 South” sculpture is an air-tight compartment with a list of more than 60,000 names, serial numbers, branches of the military and dates of service of the San Antonio soldiers who served in the Vietnam War. And across from the Vietnam sculpture is the Korean War foxhole memorial statue entitled, “Night Watch.”

This summer also brings the return of two events dedicated to fundraising for kids in San Antonio. Fiesta Noche del Rio is certainly a colorful and energetic variety of performances, but proceeds from the shows benefit children in need. The Rey Feo and Queens River Parade raises money for deserving kids to attend college.

It is vibrant! It is lively! It is for a good cause! Now in its 66th season, Fiesta Noche del Rio is lighting up the Arneson River Theatre once again. The show began in 1957 on the River Walk, and it has been a staple ever since. San Antonio’s “First Lady of Song,” Rosita Fernandez, was the original performer who dazzled hundreds of thousands of patrons. Since then, the show has continued to take on new life each year under the direction of Elizabeth “Lisa” Sanchez-Lopez and now Katie Rodriguez Hall.

This iconic cultural performance along the banks of the river is an artistic blend of colorful costumes, talented dancers and the sound of San Antonio’s deep musical roots. On Friday and Saturday evenings, the Arneson comes to life, and proceeds from the event have helped raise more than $2.85 million for disadvantaged children in San Antonio through the Alamo Kiwanis Club. TAKING A “RIVER WALK” THROUGH HISTORY

San Antonio was settled as a Spanish mission all the way back in 1718. As a 305-yearold city, we have got over 100 years on Austin, Dallas and Houston. As such, you can find remnants of history around every corner, especially along the river that fueled the development of the original missions. The River Walk itself is historic! So, take a “River Walk” through history and discover over three centuries of art, architecture and culture.

THE SAN ANTONIO RIVER WALK

In 1929, architect Robert H.H. Hugman pitched a plan to San Antonio civic leaders to beautify the river while addressing severe flooding issues. It took 10 years before the project broke ground, but year by year progress was made: In 1941, rock walkways, stairs, walls and the Arneson River Theatre were completed, and the first river parade was held; Casa Rio was the first restaurant to open in 1946; the first landscaping project was completed in 1956; in 1961, a new plan suggested that all buildings lining the river be designed with basement space that opens at the River Level; 1968 brought Hemisfair ’68 to San Antonio, and many construction projects were completed in advance including the convention center complex; and many milestones later (and 15 miles of River Walk later), this beautiful, most visited tourist attraction in Texas thrives with year-round entertainment. THE ALAMO

Of course, you remember The Alamo! After all, this is where San Antonio’s history all began. Located in the city’s center, steps from the River Walk, The Alamo is one of five historic missions built in the 18th century by Catholic missionaries. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is most known for the Battle of the Alamo in 1836, and the lore of figures like Davy Crockett. You can tour the site for free as well as explore more than 500 priceless artifacts at the newly opened Ralston Family Collections Center. Immerse yourself in the battle and rich history of The Alamo.

LA VILLITA

While The Alamo is San Antonio’s oldest structure, La Villita is its oldest neighborhood. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this square features a range of architectural styles, including adobe, Victorian and vernacular limestone buildings that evoke age-old charm. Today, the site celebrates the city’s art and culture. There are more than 25 shops and art galleries to explore, and the square hosts over 200 cultural events yearly. These events include Fiesta’s famous Night

in Old San Antonio and performances at the Arneson River Theatre. Here, you can also dine at some of the city’s oldest restaurants, including Fig Tree and Little Rhein Prost Haus.

SAN FERNANDO CATHEDRAL

Located at one end of Main Plaza (Plaza de las Islas), San Fernando Cathedral was founded on March 9, 1731 by 16 families who came from the Canary Islands to colonize San Antonio. It is the oldest continuously functioning religious community, as well as the oldest standing church, in Texas. Main Plaza was designed in 1730 with a set of radiating streets forming a cross with San Fernando in the center.

GUENTHER HOUSE

If you head south along the river, you will run into Guenther House in San Antonio’s historic Southtown. You will know when you find it because the charming stone house sits in front of the giant Pioneer Flour Towers. Carl Hilmar Guenther founded the original Guenther Flour Mill in the mid-1800s. He situated his mill along the San Antonio River to harvest the power of the current to produce the best flour in Texas. Today, you can eat in the historic home, serving up authentic Pioneer Flour pancakes. You can also explore the attached museum to catch a look at antique baking accessories and commemorative mill dishware.

JUAN O’GORMAN’S CONFLUENCE OF CIVILIZATIONS MURAL

Jumping ahead into more recent history, our next stop takes us to the 1968 World’s Fair. The city was bustling with new hotels and art projects to delight the influx of visitors. One particular project caught everyone’s eye — Juan O’Gorman’s Hemisfair ’68 mosaic. Today, his “Confluence of Civilizations” mural is displayed proudly on the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center facing the river. This 130 x 22-foot mural comprises 540 panels weighing over 100 pounds each. The size and scale amaze as your eye travels through a tapestry of Mexican history spanning the Aztecs to the Mexican Revolution.

Named for Mission San Jose, these painted clay tiles adorn the River Walk with bursts of color and vibrant storytelling. In addition to spotting San Jose tiles in the wild, you can visit the “San Jose Tiles: The Art & Artist” exhibit at the Witte Museum through August 13. Along with the Witte’s permanent collection of San Jose Tiles, this exhibition features 45 tiles, murals, photographs and other objects, as well as the stories of their creators. Discover the colorful history of San Antonio and the rich stories preserved through art.

THE JAPANESE TEA GARDEN

As you continue north along the river, you will discover an unexpected, hidden San Antonio gem — the Japanese Tea Garden. Located in Brackenridge Park, this lush garden sits on the former spot of an abandoned rock quarry. After the quarry closed operations in 1908, the site presented challenges for park leadership looking to create a relaxing urban retreat. The solution was transforming the spot into a lush lily pond and meditation garden. Completed in the 1920s, the site features koi ponds, a 60-foot waterfall and rows of weaving stone paths that meander through verdant foliage. The site honors San Antonio’s history of limestone quarrying and cultural diversity, earning its designation as a landmark on the National Register of Historic Places. Stroll the grounds and stay for tea at the Jingu House restaurant on the park’s crest.

Here are a few of our San Antonio favorites to add to your midsummer itinerary.

VISIT “ART EVERYWHERE” MURALS ON THE RIVER WALK

Public art in San Antonio is both integral to the culture of our city, and essential to its vibrancy and promotion of the talented pool of local artists sharing their creative narratives. Centro San Antonio’s Art Everywhere campaign brings more than 50 public art installations to the public near downtown. Near the River Walk, check out Luis Valderas’ “Sky, Earth & Mariachi Lacho Over San Antonio,” and Allison Gregory’s appropriately named “Just a Perfect Day,” visible from the San Antonio River near Crockett and Losoya St. or over drinks at Bier Garten San Antonio. If you are exploring the River Walk near Main Plaza, there is a new mural between Main and Villita Streets. SPEND SOME SUNSHINE TIME AT PEARL

With weekly weekend markets, a splash pad (Gustav’s Geysers) on the greens of the 22-acre Pearl Park, and infinite options for shopping and dining, Pearl in the summertime is simply glorious. Visit the Saturday market from 9:00am to 1:00pm for a farm and ranch focus featuring local South Texas produce and meats. On Sundays, the 10:00am to 2:00pm market brings local artisans featuring crafted home goods. During the rest of the week, dine on Peruvian-Asian, French, Coastal Italian, Caribbean, Mediterranean or Mexican fare. Just a short stroll along the River Walk, south of Pearl, it is a fun and free activity for the whole family.
