Louis Poulsen is more than internationally acclaimed fixture design. From the beginning, our company has been defined by its attitude to lighting. Our never ending pursuit of perfection in both detail and the overall product signifies our work to create lighting. We never compromise. This is visible in our products.

more than

light The challenge of cooperating with architects and designers is that they do not just have to design lighting fixtures. We insist on creating lighting products capable of interacting with architecture and contributing to a unique atmosphere. Whether indoors or outdoors.

When the designer’s eye for detail meets the architect’s understanding of the overall picture, we create lighting with a unique ability to adjust and supplement architectural settings and styles.

At Louis Poulsen, we include the details into the overall scheme when we create lighting. This is one of the key reasons why our lighting remains current and important generation after generation.

Take a panoptic perspective, see the details – this makes your choice obvious 2

Throughout the years, individual custom design versions of PH Artichoke with leaves of glass have been produced. The 50th anniversary for the design of PH Artichoke made Louis Poulsen include the glass version as a permanent member of the exclusive product range. The glass version of PH Artichoke is no coincidence. The fixture which inspired PH Artichoke in 1958 was PH Septima. A seven-shade fixture only available in few copies. PH Septima is a study in light treatment and craftsmanship, and even today, producing the fixture would be a major challenge. PH Artichoke Glass is also a challenge. Not only does the accuracy of each of the hand-made and handtreated glass leaves pose a challenge, but the actual positioning of the glass leaves can only be done during mounting, i.e. when the fixture hangs suspended. Therefore, specially trained staff from Louis Poulsen will assemble PH Artichoke Glass on site. PH Artichoke Glass will give any room a unique distinctive character. The soft light is diffused through the sand-blown leaves and adorns the surroundings with soft, comfortable lighting. The angles of the leaves give PH Artichoke Glass an iced look, whether lit or unlit, which adds a delicate lightness and elegance to the room. PH Artichoke Glass comes in all four sizes.

Few fixtures are as well known and admired throughout the world as Poul Henningen’s PH Artichoke. The fixture was designed 50 years ago. PH Artichoke is often called a classic, but should rather be termed an icon. PH Artichoke is hotter now than ever before. Numerous projects worldwide confirm that this chameleonic lighting fixture matches all types of interior design and creates an individual ambience. PH Artichoke’s harmonious and exciting design adapts to its surroundings in a calm and aesthetic manner. Previously, the application of PH Artichoke was often viewed as prestigious. This was the fixture for ministries and the world of finance with the odd detour to the grandiose attorney offices. This has changed drastically. PH Artichoke is no longer synonymous with corporate interior design. Today, PH Artichoke is used in all environments. Its masculine elegance and force help accentuate a room and create the atmosphere you want for a room and company. Times have made PH Artichoke a treasured part of the lighting in homes where focus is on unique design. PH Artichoke has broken down both cultural and architectural barriers. It fits everything and helps make the interior more exciting and distinct.

9

history in brief PH Artichoke was designed in 1958 at the request of architects Eva and Nils Koppel, who designed the restaurant Langelinie Pavillonen in Copenhagen. The architects were charged with creating the entire interior design of the restaurant based on the maxim that the pavilion should be “festive yet cosy”. The project was to observe five criteria: 1. Since the U-shaped serving area should be useable both in its entirety and as individual banqueting rooms and restaurant, a type of “chandelier” had to be found that could tie all the rooms together. 2. This requirement coincided with the regard of how the building appeared from the outside which is crucial considering how this glass pavilion is set in the terrain. 3. In the restaurant, the “chandeliers” should be supplemented by table lamps. The banqueting rooms should also be adorned by wall fixtures. 4. The chandeliers should be festive and emanate a warm glow. The table lamps should not compete with the chandeliers in terms of light and should emit intimate lighting on the tables. 5. The lighting fixtures should be decorative even during the day when they were unlit.

Poul Henningsen had already considered several of these criteria in his early multiple-shade fixtures, so the choice of Poul Henningsen as designer of the fixture for Langelinie Pavillonen came as no surprise. As Nils Koppel expresses it: ”His honest view on lighting which perfectly unites with his unique artistic and humorous abilities had to enable him to solve the requirements. In our eyes, it would have been an admission of failure if the fixtures had turned out as decorative art or contemporary fashion and not as rational lighting.”

Langelinie Pavillionen, Copenhagen, Denmark

Poul Henningsen approached the assignment with requisite enthusiasm and found plenty of inspiration in some of his previous products. Particularly PH Septima, a seven-shade chandelier in clear glass consisting of seven rows of glass sand blown in six fields can be considered a predecessor of PH Artichoke. According to Poul Henningsen, PH Artichoke could have been made as a globe chandelier with six shades, but the 12 x 6 leaves gave a better play of light and richness and a better visual impression than the six rings in e.g. PH Septima.

Designer Louise Campbell has shifted her inspiration from summer to winter and redefined the concept of floor lamps. It is massive, yet light and almost invisible. It is geometric in form, yet an organic collection of figures held together in a mysterious way. The white snowflakes have fallen in an uneven, natural pattern – in some places close together and in others floating thinly into nothing. Louise Campbell explains her concept of light: "Softness – I’m searching for soothing light. Light to warm the spirit. In designing my fixtures, I strive to underline the beauty of the nature outside and bring it into people’s homes. A quiet battle against passive light that has no story, light that may have high lighting qualities, but generally lacks soul. When summers are good in Denmark, we have so much light that we hardly need artificial light sources. We save them for winters. Thus, it seemed natural to get to the essence of winter light by underlining

12

the most beautiful aspect I could find. The aspect we all relate to if we have special ties to the Nordic region.” Snow represents a new way of looking at the function of a floor lamp. When the light goes on, Snow generates more moodcreating room lighting than a conventional floor lamp. The design emits light in every direction, and - when lit - Snow floats as a light, airy element in a room. Despite its elongated shape, Snow is a slim fixture. This is possible because a 2-kilo counterweight hangs freely like a heavy snowball over the floor inside the fixture body. Design: Louise Campbell. LOUIS

Collage A SUCCESS FROM LOUISE CAMPBELL Louise Campbell’s immense creativity ranks her among the top international designers. Last year, Wallpaper highlighted Louise Campbell as one of the most promising and trend-setting young designers. Louise Campbell is a unique designer. She sees challenges every-

where, and the amount of and her appetite for innovative new ideas place a huge pressure on herself and her staff, but also on the manufacturers. A development process with Louise Campbell at the tiller is no quiet process. Meetings are conducted at high pace and problems are solved with new ideas and

angles. For Louis Poulsen, cooperation with Louise Campbell offers many opportunities. She, on the other hand, feels that she is being challenged creatively continuously throughout the process.

DEVELOPMENT IS A TEAM EFFORT

”Louise gets all the wild ideas; we catch them in a butterfly net and return them in a highly condensed version. Collage has an idiom never seen before, and that placed demands on us all. Collage made us challenge technology – and thus also our sub-contractors! There were no standardised mass-production technologies available for the assignment. The shades are laser cut as flat sheets and then bent. This is an extremely difficult process to manage because of the size of the sheets, the type of cut and our defined tolerance requirements,” supplements the construction designer on the project.

Campbell and Collage inspire innovation Louise Campbell’s products are received positively everywhere, from Japan to the US. The inspiration from nature complemented by Louise’s feminine touch impresses from first sight. Louise Campbell’s two fixtures, Campbell and Collage, have appealed to both the private and professional markets. The products have been particularly well received in projects where the ambience parameter reigns supreme.

18

On the cooperation to make Collage: It was demanding, challenging but never boring. On the construction design phase: We had to return and work a lot with the idea and concept phase before Collage started to meet our design philosophy and we could move on.

Cooperation with Louis Poulsen has been absolutely perfect,” says Louise Campbell in an article from Louis Poulsen’s international magazine of lighting and architecture NYT. ”Collage involved a lot of new technology and had to be developed very quickly. The company kept its cool and was willing to take a chance and move on even though some of the details did seem insoluble at times.

Black and white, ebony and ivory, have been themes in myriad settings. The ultimate meeting of contrasts.

The lighting fixtures in the PH 3/2 series are among our most popular PH products. The fixtures in the series adapt to all types of interior design. The trend towards more functional and simplistic interior design is now acknowledged with the launch of the PH 3/2 pendant and table fixture in black chrome-plated frame and white opal glass. The contrasts remain equally expressive whether lit or unlit. The chrome-plated black version displays a highly graphical and distinct idiom, which will underpin the interior design of any environment. A classic design added black elegance and exclusivity. Dressed for modern living.

Luminous, hovering objects magically attract our attention. Aeros is such an object: Shining, yet shielded, it plays on our sensation of closeness and distance. The chased surface perforation traces a diffused border, thus creating an impression of weightlessness. At the same time, Aeros envelops its surroundings and draws the room to a natural centre. In Aeros, designer Ross Lovegrove renders his interpretation of the Louis Poulsen lighting philosophy. He explains: "It's about light and lightness as the piece appears to float in the air like a space age object, like an unidentified phenomenon, technically fascinating. The design employs state-of-the-art processes to create a lightweight, perforated light enclosure. A concept within the heritage of Louis Poulsen's understanding of light and sculptural beauty." In our work with Aeros, we put the accent on creating a fixture that is ideal for contemporary, energy-saving light sources. To optimise the wide diffusion of these light sources, the lower part of Aeros is shaped as a reflector that focuses light and directs the majority of it downwards. Aeros distributes the remaining light to fill a room with comfortable, muted illumination. Its size and low suspension over tables makes Aeros the obvious centre of a room, creating a natural focal point for anybody who enters it. And although Aeros is a fixture design of substance and charisma, its tightly controlled design allows it to blend into both old and new interiors. Aeros is particularly suited for conference rooms, restaurants, bars, receptions and dining rooms. Design: Ross Lovegrove. Light source: 23/24W TC-TSE E27, 42W TC-TEL GX24q-4. Munkegaard Arne Jacobsen – the master supreme of simplicity. Few, perhaps none, have succeeded in combining geometric shapes more beautifully or precisely. His understanding of broad design and pure detail has given Denmark architectural and design icons of lasting international standing. The Munkegaard ceiling fixture was created for the Munkegaard School north of Copenhagen. The ceiling fixture was used as general lighting in classrooms and had to emit excellent task lighting as well as enhance users’ experience of the space. Arne Jacobsen designed the transition between fixture and ceiling as a slit. This feature eliminated the shadow cast by daylight and the contrast between the fixture’s own light and shadow. At the same time, Munkegaard retains a neutral expression: It looks like a pure illuminated disk and therefore diverts no attention away from the room.

AJ Discus can be mounted directly on the ceiling or wall and has, despite being surface mounted, a fairly low depth of only 10 cm.The fixture shades in opal glass pose a major challenge to the glassblower, but emit fantastic light – both in the room and on the backwall, where they help minimise the contrast between the illuminated shade and the wall.

lp charisma king & queen The LP Charisma pendant received the Danish Design Award in its very first year on the market. Since then, the simple, versatile fixture has become an element of innumerable lighting projects all over the world. At Louis Poulsen, we constantly update our products to make sure that they take full advantage of modern, power-saving light sources. In 2005, we could thus introduce the new LP Charisma, a version that boasted higher effect and was dubbed ‘King’ in addition to LP Charisma. At the same time, we also introduced LP Charisma Queen, designed for compact fluorescent lamps. The fact that the fixtures are designed for specific light sources beautifully demonstrates how we never compromise on our product and lighting philosophies. Louis Poulsen never stops at design and decoration considerations – the light itself must always play the key role in our products.

This conviction engenders breathtaking fixtures. As a fixture designed to be viewed from all angles, LP Charisma is suitable for suspension at all heights. Where LP Charisma King was made to be suspended in high-ceiling rooms such as stairways, LP Charisma Queen is better suited for lower placing. The special construction of its inner shades enables a small amount of light to be directed so that, when lit, the fixture illuminates itself. The controlled designs of LP Charisma King and Queen give the fixtures great application potentials when it comes to solutions requiring repetitive mounting without disturbing the architecture and ambience of a room. What is more, although its design is characteristic and contemporary, LP Charisma also blends in well with old architecture.

Young Swedish designer Helena Tatjana Eliason found her inspiration in glass and clothing when she created LP Hint. The way fabric softly drapes in dresses combined with light refraction in glass are associations she integrated into the shape and construction of the post top. As an industrial designer, Helena Tatjana Eliason has succeeded in translating the idea that form should follow function into a simple design with a potent inner core: Masked by its simple exterior, the LP Hint post lamp is a complete lighting unit that hides its pole connection, ballast, reflector and adjustment facilities. LP Hint was designed with easy, rapid maintenance in mind and copies the concept of toolfree light-source change seen in LP Icon Mini. LP Hint comes in two basic versions – one with a completely closed surface, and one with an opal top shade that illuminates the fixture itself and makes

it a beacon in open areas. The shading also comes in two variants, either produced in clear glass and placed in the post top or mounted as a lowered shade. In the latter version, LP Hint has a defined rim of light in the post top. The rim of light renders LP Hint both a directional pointer and a decorative element in pedestrian streets, paths in urban environments, etc. LP Hint represents a solid choice of materials: The post top is made from cast aluminium with powder coated, textured surface. Its diffuser is made of opal, high pressure moulded acrylic. The reflector is metallised, high pressure moulded polycarbonate. Shades come in hardened, clear glass or high pressure moulded acrylic. LP Hint is available in three variants: Basic, Opal or Opal with shade. LP Hint is mounted on poles Ø115 or Ø60. LP Hint is fitted with 42W TC-TEL, 57W TCTEL or 70W HIE/HIT. LP Hint is suited for mounting heights from 3.5m to 10m.

t e h e r a n i Dazzling innovation of downlight “Create a dazzling, yet simple innovation of the classic downlight fixture.” That was how Louis Poulsen worded the assignment we gave celebrated German architect Hadi Teherani. And that is just what he did. Hadi Teherani created a new ceiling lighting fixture that accentuates the power of light while also shielding off the light source completely. Teherani carries its creator’s name and is a solid fixture that makes no attempt to conceal itself in the ceiling. The downlight fixture emerges as a distinctive, decorative element made as a solid metal ring in the same material as the fixture reflector. The matt reflector softens the light distribution, thus allowing light from the fixture to reach surfaces softly and uniformly. A similar focus on light distribution is also an integral par of other ceiling fixtures from Louis Poulsen, e.g., Strata and AH System. Teherani is perfect for general lighting, but also serves well as supplementary lighting in offices, libraries, meeting and conference rooms, etc. The downlight fixture can also be used in secondary rooms like corridors and stairways. Teherani is made from aluminium with a satinised, matt anodised surface. It comes in two sizes: Ø 238mm and Ø 275mm.

w a t e r f r o n t – the archetype bollard At waterfronts, bollards are mounted where water meets land. Originally, a bollard denoted the mooring posts mounted along the quays of all ports. Today, the word is also used to describe the popular Waterfront – a bollard that in its idiom expresses the strength and power inherent in the original bollard. Designer Dan Hasløv makes no secret of the fact that Waterfront was conceived from his love of the maritime environment. He himself is a yachtsman and is familiar with the needs and requirements for lighting in ports. For example, the light source was shaded to

meet the specific requirements posed to lighting at quays. One such requirement is that the light source must never ”blind boats” at the harbour entry. This is why Waterfront’s light source is completely shaded and thus cannot be viewed directly. Waterfront is a design of simple, yet solid strength and has become a popular form for lighting at a number of Danish marinas. The almost classic design evinces the bollard’s inspiration from mooring posts, and makes the fixture extremely adaptable for ports, parks and car parks – and all types of architecture. The compact design also reinforces Waterfront’s high resistance to vandalism.

Design and technology details are not always easy to coalesce into a synthesis And Louis Poulsen’s lighting philosophy is often a challenge in itself. The FCA principles – function, comfort, ambience – constitute the very DNA of Louis Poulsen’s lighting production. Consequently, many hours have been spent on testing various materials during the development of the Flindt series.

The tests have involved finding a string that both provided optimum shading and observed the transparency requirements. Colours and opacity were tested, and it proved necessary to complete the production of each fixture in the series to be able to make an assessment and get the right impression.

Even the tiniest detail has been thoroughly discussed, turned and analysed. Our unwillingness to compromise is the reason why Louis Poulsen lighting stand out from others and also determines which designers Louis Poulsen works with. Working with Louis Poulsen is a challenge for any designer since our lighting philosophy is uncompromising.

Christian Flindt has ingeniously united two geometrical shapes, the cylinder and the truncated cone.

Alfred Homann designed Kipp in complete conformity with the Louis Poulsen lighting philosophy. The post lamp comprises only components needed for its function. Even the three arms holding the shade were designed to bolster its perfected functionality. Two of them hold a pivot joint and the third comes with a screw. When technicians are to change the light source, they open the screw, tilt the shade backwards and fasten it into the position. This procedure allows the light source to be changed swiftly. The fixture head looks like a cut-off cone, and the short distance between the top shade and the light source serves to distribute the light evenly and symmetrically. The design also affects on the overall economy of the fixture, its spreading the light widely. The well-defined, classic form makes Kipp suitable for a wide range of environments, e.g. residential areas, urban districts, parks, squares, small roads and paths. The Kipp post lamp is primarily designed for poles up to 4.2 m high.

Pagoda Comfortable seat and stunning site lighting in one design. Pagoda is innovation at its zenith. Two functions and a stream of conscious thinking underpin the ultra-simple expression. Thus, Pagoda is a hybrid between a piece of seating furniture and a bollard. In its striking simplicity, Pagoda offers both a comfortable seat and functional lighting. Simplicity is an art Pagoda masters, a fact proven at last light+building fair when the fixture was nominated for the AIT’s innovation award.

source, the surface of which is a couple of centimetres below the fixture bottom. This makes it difficult to damage the fixture.

Louis Poulsen assigned design-people aps the task of designing Pagoda, the aim being to find alternatives to conventional site lighting. Behind the simple product design lies a complex process of interesting challenges in terms of materials and production.

As a design element, Pagoda offers wide applications and poses major challenges to architects’ creativity. For this reason, it is inspiring to study the solutions that continually emerge. The fixture can be fitted with several light sources and is ideal for both indoor and outdoor use. Indoors in, e.g., shopping malls, train stations and airports, and outdoors in parks, squares, bus stops and platforms – anywhere that calls for solid, unconventional lighting with comfortable options.

Despite its delicate construction, Pagoda is a solid, cast aluminium fixture of unique strength and quality. The design also protects the actual light source in a safe, intelligent manner. Pagoda protects the light
