e The island of Feijenoord in the South part of Rotterdam is characterised by its mix of light industry and housing. A part of this island is the closed off Hunter Douglas site. As a group we have made a new urban plan for this area, named “Safe Haven, which in short refers to a tidal park enclosed by housing blocks. It was my task to design a housing block at a plot along the islands main artery; the Piekstraat. Here one can find industrial heritage, like warehouses and an abandoned directors building. My objective was to enhance this harbour-like atmosphere by creating a new configuration based on contrasting architectural elements. In the design the ground level is made permeable by the demolition of existing structures and the addition of new housing blocks. These individual elements are connected by an elevated ring covered with translucent polycarbonate panels.

The building ensemble hosts important neighbourhood facilities as part of the connected urban network or ‘rhizome’. Along the Piekstraat there is a black water treatment installation that turn methane into electricity and heat. These resources are ‘consumed’ by the dwellings and the neighbourhood center. In this center, located in the directors building, dwellers can hosts communal activities at the ground floor, such as cooking workshops, and work on individual projects at the first floor.

The Living with Water studio broadened my field of knowledge due to its alternation between design and research. The first phase, which was a group research about the ‘flavours of flood’, gave me valuable insights in the spatial implications of changing water levels. In phase two, when designing the urban plan, I researched the application of an urban water cycle in relation to its technical, ecological and social aspects. The final phase was all about integrating the water cycles and other aspects of the urban metabolism (see diagram) into the architectural design of the ‘rhizomatic’ dwelling block. During my graduation and further career I will definitely continue to research these bodies of knowledge.

In order to establish a healthy mix of inhabitants there are different types of dwellings. There are two types of family dwellings: large and small. Both types have an individual ground floor connection, so children are able to play outside easily. At the second floor there are 10 studio’s with an in-build bed, suitable for students and starters. On top, in the elevated ring, there are ten sunspace dwellings, especially designed for people and plants.
