LAILA EID
SUMMER 2019 COLLECTION A
mira Tharwat talks to Egyptian fashion designer Laila Eid. The mother of three reveals all about her summer collection for 2019, her favourite fabrics, the celebrities she dressed and the ones she wishes to see wearing her designs.
LOUNGE 16
Introduce yourself to our readers I am 35 years old, I graduated with a bachelor degree in Business Administration. I am a Taurus, married and a mother for 3 kids (14, 11 and 5 years old). I decided to peruse my career once my elder daughter went to the nursery. How did your passion for fashion come about? I got married when I was in my second year at college and I had my kids when I was in college as well. Once I finished studying, I decided to take fashion courses while I was raising up my kids, I took a course in the Italian Fashion Academy, I participated in La Mode A Beyrouth, and many more. It was a hobby since I was a kid, I liked to draw my own designs and go to a tailor to do them for me, and I never liked to buy dresses from haute couture. I was good at drawing, but I didn’t know how to do a proper sketch at that time.
LOUNGE 17
Tell us more about your latest Summer collection… I like Linen fabrics, they look and feel natural especially in the summer; the lighter the fabric, the comfier the clothes. Mainly, I am haute couture, the ready to wear summer collection is inspired by what I would like to wear. I draw several sketches of what I like, and that’s how the summer collection gets done. What inspired you to launch it? It’s not easy to find nice ready to wear clothes in Egypt, you can find more of exaggerated designs that are full of ruffles for example. It is too difficult to find simple Linen designs that have the Greek style, and that’s what inspired me to launch this collection. What are the fabrics you used? I like to use more of Linen and Cotton fabrics in the ready to wear collection. I don’t like to use Lycra and synthetic fabrics. Paillette and Tule are my favourites in haute couture.
LOUNGE 18
Describe the personality of the lady who wears from this collection in 3 words… Personating, irresistible and alluring. You dressed many celebrities, would you share with us some of the names... Asma Abulyazeid, Enjy Kiwan, Fozaza, Sherine Hamdy, Sally Abdel Salam, Caroline Azmi, Dayan Hesham, Nesma Mahgoub and currently working on a design for Myrna Nour El Din. And who is the one you liked your design on her figure the most? Fozaza and Asma Abulayzeid, I believe that they added to my designs. You dressed Asma also at El Gouna Film Festival’s Opening Ceremony; tell us more about the dress... To have a design of mine on the red carpet is a great thing, and El Gouna Film Festival’s red carpet is a big thing. Dressing Asma Abulyazeid for this occasion was very exciting to me. I liked this style and I thought it would fit Asma’s figure. When I shared the design of the dress with her she got as excited as I did. As for the grey colour of the dress, it suited her dark complexion perfectly.
LOUNGE 19
Who are the celebrities you still hope to dress? Yousra, Dorra, Yasmine Sabry, Sherine Abdel Wahab and Amina Khalil. Who are the designers that influenced your style and the ones you aspire to? Elie Saab of course and Krikor Jabotian. What is the biggest challenge you encounter when putting your designs into life? Finding the fabrics I want. Sometimes it’s difficult to find what I want, which makes me feel that I want to design the fabrics. What are the latest trends for Fall/Winter 2019? Paillette and Tule. Where can we find Laila Eid designs? Jay in Cairo Festival and Jay in Alexandria as well as in Gouna.

REASONS WHY WE SHOULDN’T
Compare Ourselves with Others
ost of us are constantly living unsatisfied, M and that’s mainly because we tend to compare ourselves with others, with idols, with anyone and ever yone. Comparing is the silent death that damages you internally and externally, it steals away your happiness and hunts you down. Comparing is a part of human nature, but overdoing it can be destructive. We feel unsecured because of the threats we have created ourselves, and we get afraid of being worse than others. In fact, comparison can be a burden that makes you think that you should always remain on the top, which is a mistake that you are making to yourself. Mariam Anis brings you 7 reasons why you shouldn’t compare yourself to anyone.. 1) We are different
First of all, we should acknowledge that we are different. Yes, we have different talents and skills, we have different habits and life styles. We are different because God created us different with dissimilar fingerprints, with various tendencies, with dissimilar minds and thoughts. We should put into our consideration that we are not similar. What is applicable to your friend doesn’t necessarily mean that it is applicable to you. What suits your coworker doesn’t have to suit you. Everyone has his own version that is different from others. 2) Comparison is unfair
It’s unfair to compare between two persons in the same thing, you would be comparing between the point of strength in the first person and the point of weakness in the second one. Thus, you compare between the highest and the lowest points. Don’t live in a prison LOUNGE 26
because people compare between you and your brother, and feel ashamed because he is superior to you in something. You have to know that you are better in another thing! Actually, People aren’t aware of how to set the right comparison to the right person at the right time. 3) Comparison develops hatred & jealousy
When we set comparison and focus on others, we start to lose our focus on ourselves and our success. We put all our concentration to mentor other’s actions and neglect our life and blessings. Although we want to continue our success, our hearts are filled with hatred and jealousy, and thus, we don’t move forward and do achievements. Jealousy is a heavy load, neglect what other do because you are distracting your way and delaying your success. 4) Comparison deprives you of being happy and satisfied
You are not living to mentor other’s lives. You are not here in this world to see what your friends do and get jealous. Don’t waste your life thinking about others. Enjoy your moments and live your life happily. 5) You are not just a copy of others
You are the original version of yourself, not a copy. Stop behaving as a second version of others as the world is filled of millions of copies. Be yourself, believe in your capabilities and forget about what others think and do. 6) Comparison makes you imitate without a certain vision
There isn’t any benefit of imitating others’ actions without having a certain vision. If you have a real vision for your life and you know what suits you, you will achieve all your dreams, but if you don’t and you are just copying others, you will lose your way as your success will be meaningless.
7) No self-acceptance..no others acceptance
Finally, self-acceptance leads to others’ acceptance. If you are not accepting yourself and constantly torturing yourself, no one will believe in you. If you are not seeing yourself as a hero, no one will see you this way. You are the translator of the message you want to deliver to others. You are what you believe as you are the one responsible for your image.

The young sister of renowned director Mohamed Samy reveals all about her passion for acting, what she aspires to and her coming acting projects.
Introduce yourself to Lounge readers I graduated from BUE with a bachelor degree in Business Marketing. My star sign is Cancer and I am single. How did your passion for acting come about? I had a passion for acting since I was a child. I was inspired by my brother, Mohamed Samy, and I used to like to go to the set while he was working to explore everything live. Around 3 years ago, I told him that I wanted to start my acting career, but I wasn’t sure whether I am a good actor or not. He advised me to participate in a workshop and so I did. I joined Marwa Gebril’s workshop coach Ahmed Fayez. Your first acting contribution was in ‘Lel Hob Forsa Akhera,’ were you intending on not working with Mohamed Samy on your first project? I received the audition of ‘Lel Hob Forsa Akhera’ with Manal El Seify after my workshop and I went without telling Mohamed, I wanted to know if I was talented myself or not. I took a big role, which was very different from my character and lifestyle. I later told Mohamed that I signed the contract. I wanted to do my first role without Mohamed’s help, but I am okay to work with him after that. How did you prepare for your role in ‘Weled El Ghalaba?’ Reading the script, I got attached to Amar’s character in ‘Weled El Ghalaba’ although it wasn’t a big role, but it was challenging especially the dialect. You can’t remove Amar from the story, and so she was important. I spoke to Mohamed first about the character, and then I spoke to Abdel Naby El Hawary, who taught me the dialect, along with Ingy El Moqadem because I had many scenes with her.

You were able to achieve great success, which was proven by a lot of celebrities who praised your performance as well as fans on the social media, did you see that coming? Not at all, everyone was supporting me assuring that Amar’s role is very important, but I was scared of the feedback. How was it like to act with the superstar Ahmed El Sakka? Ahmed El Sakka is a lovely person, he is just like a brother, who is always there for you, giving you advice, and positive feedback even in the scenes that didn’t involve him like the final scene. Also, Mohamed Mamdouh was a great support to me as well as Ingy, May, Karim and all of the cast. Mai Omar said that Mohamed Samy tends to take his work seriously and he sometimes become tough, did you feel that while working with him? Not really! Maybe it happened only once, but not in an exaggerated way, just like any other director. On set, we weren’t dealing together as brother and sister, which was comfortable and professional in a way. Who are the Egyptian and international actors you aspire to? I want to have my own character and my own style. I love Natalie Portman, Jessica Parker, Faten Hamama and Soad Hosny. And the actors you wish to work with? I love Mona Zaki and Mena Shalaby, and I wish I would work with Adel Emam. What is your dream role? Action, which is not usual for girls, but I would love to especially that I love kick boxing.
LOUNGE 31
And how do you stay fit? I go to the gym every day for 2 hours, and get involved in different activities like kick boxing, I have always been a sporty person since I was a child. I try to eat healthy as much as I can although I love food. Who is your favourite designer? I am not fascinated with someone in particular, I like to go for what suits me more. What’s your favourite perfume? La Vie Est Belle for Lancôme. What is your favourite hotspot? Gouna and Milan. Describe your prince charming… I like sharp brunette men, I am not into blonde men. I wish I would be with someone who is kind, responsible and successful, who pushes me forward and supports me. I wish he would be understanding and who can be a friend to me, we can talk to each other and communicate well. And above all, he would be supportive to my career, I believe that if he is confident enough, he will love what you love and supports you too. You have sharped Egyptian features, do you dream of universality? I don’t know, I never thought about it, but why not, I would love to of course. What are you currently working on? Still nothing is confirmed yet. I just want to go for the role that I like.

BRAD PITT IN AD ASTRA I
n James Gray’s AD ASTRA, Pitt plays Major Roy McBride, an astronaut burdened by the disappearance of his father when Roy was just 16. When the US government contacts Roy to explain that not only might his father still be alive, but he might be responsible for a series of energy bursts emanating from the far reaches of our solar system, and causing untold damage on Earth, Roy must journey to find him and reckon with the ideas he has held since he was a boy. From the Venice Film Festival world premiere of AD ASTRA, Pitt explains what drew him to the project, and opens up about the challenging but fulfilling journey he took with Gray to land the film.
You first met James Gray at Sundance in 1995, right? That’s right. I had called him up after seeing LITTLE ODESSA. We just became immediate friends, as you see with James. He’s great for conversation, and we had been friends ever since. We always talked about doing something together. AD ASTRA was the one that finally lined up for us. You were able to produce THE LOST CITY OF Z with James before this. What are your memories of working with him on that? I remember we were at the final edit stage for THE LOST CITY OF Z, which I thought was just a gorgeous film. I could see something in James. He is so well versed in film history and what’s come before. But I could feel, in this one, a real personal film. It was something I had started to see in THE IMMIGRANT. To back up, James and I both love the late ’60s early ’70s films. It’s probably the bar for both of us. When we were finishing LOST CITY, I could see his growth. In as much as he knows the masters, in this movie I could see him really, really getting his hand on the reins of his own personal story, and that’s when it’s best. Did the conversations about AD ASTRA begin during that process? They did. He said, “I got this thing I’ve been bouncing around…” It was AD ASTRA, and it just felt like the original idea he had was contrary to most sci-fi films. It came from a quote that’s attributed to Arthur C. Clarke. “Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.” In other words, either aliens exist, or we are completely and utterly alone, and either one is equally scary. This was a really unique jumping-off point. The other thing was our early conversations - or
what was emerging from the film - were about this difficulty to connect, and these questions of masculinity. What are the things that hold us back, in our training as men, from having deeper, more fulfilling relationships, not only with the people we love but with ourselves? Those two ideas were enough for me. It felt right. It was my old friend James. I thought, Let’s go see what this thing is. Were you drawn at all to the idea of the mystery of this character’s journey? Was piecing together that puzzle part of the appeal? Definitely. You have to know that you don’t know. One does not know what the film is going to be when you jump off. It’s always a gamble. Now, for example, with Quentin [Tarantino] it’s OK; his dialogue is so specific, and I know his vernacular, so I have a really good idea of where we’re going to land. But with this particular film, I didn’t at all. These were big ideas; very difficult ideas to get across in two hours, in a film format. I had no idea how we were going to get there. I’m not sure James even knew, but it was worthy of the journey. How did that manifest in the process? James and I have always talked more personally and more openly about our own foibles, and we usually have a good laugh over that. We kept developing the script, right up until shooting, and what James did while were in production was, in the morning I would receive these texts from him for the day’s shoot. They would always be about something very personal in his life. Something that was very exposing of himself. That would kick off our day’s conversation. And then, that would instruct the scenes we were shooting. We would re-hone the scenes that day according to
our conversations. So, the shape of the thing was always in flux. When we got to editing this film, I would call this the hardest film I’ve ever been a part of. That was surprising to me, but it was also joyful to me because I feel like if you think you know exactly how everything should be done, you are done. Surprising how? So, the surprising thing on this one was just how delicate it was in the editing process. One line of voiceover, or a music cue, could so easily tip the cart over, and we would have to pick it back up and start back again. This was consistent through the whole film; it was really challenging in that way. There are definite influences in AD ASTRA from Joseph Conrad; especially in the novel HEART OF DARKNESS, which became the movie APOCALYPSE NOW. That movie had a famously challenging shoot, but the finished film is widely considered to be a masterpiece. We had to keep reminding ourselves, they didn’t have that thing figured out. They had to even reach out for help from others. And that’s OK. I mean, there are literally stories about how many times Martin Sheen had to redo the voiceover, and how they had to reach out to others that helped hone that voiceover. Of course, in the documentary HEARTS OF DARKNESS, about the making of the movie, you see it’s his wife that sees the ceremony that becomes the metaphor for the final scene in APOCALYPSE NOW. They didn’t even know how to end it until then. We weren’t sure how to end ours. There were definite parallels in the making of this movie. At the same time, the character’s journey is very different. While Willard in APOCALYPSE NOW slowly descends,

it seems like Roy, in AD ASTRA, actually warms up as he reckons with the ideas that he’s held all his life. Did that strike you? I never was able to define it that way when he did it, but I think that’s the truth. In retrospect, I think we were originally heading towards that dark night of the soul, where our character has to go to the furthest reaches of our solar system to find himself utterly alone, to not have anyone else to rely on, or any TV to distract, or any drugs to escape with. So, he’s really left having to confront the self. The self with all of its griefs, all its buried pain and regrets. Going back to those ideas about masculinity, I think we’ve grown up with these ideas: that we must be strong at all times, that we must not show weakness, that we must be capable. And we must not let anyone disrespect us, which is the one that always makes me laugh. Talk about a fool’s errand. So, it’s having to fully acknowledge and get your arms around those things within, instead of denying them, because that idea of perceived strength and denying self-doubts and vulnerability... Having to deny those things is actually denying a part of one’s self. In my life, I’ve come to believe that it’s being open - for your kids, for your loved ones, your friends, and yourself - that you have to look at. You have to be able to fully
LOUNGE 36
acknowledge yourself. Really, what we’re talking about is really knowing yourself. Or constantly trying to know yourself. And being open about that with others. To me, that’s what makes true confidence. That’s what I’ve found, is a real confidence, and a true competence comes from that. That is much more stable and stronger than any perceived idea of, “Just do it.” You say that was something you’ve learned on your journey. Did it take a while to come to that realization? Yes, and I think it was why I was even drawn to this film at that time. It’s something I certainly was focused on, looking at, and questioning at that time. I think James was in the same place. Then, we all get out of it what we get out of it. Do you think that there’s an end to that road, or do you think it’s an ongoing thing? I think it’s ongoing. I think it’s always something you’re striving for. I’ve failed multiple times since then. This morning, probably. But then you get back on the horse faster and you can redirect. You spent much of your other movie this year, Quentin Tarantino’s ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD, driving around the sun-kissed streets of Los Angeles. Is it fair to say that being dispatched into the dark of space, with so much zero gravity wire work,
represented a slightly more complicated technical challenge? Slightly [laughs]. But I would say, if we’re talking about the individual, I believe the individual would have to go through some sort of raw experience to get to the place of inner peace that the Cliff character [in ONCE UPON A TIME] exudes. Doing the zero-gravity stuff on AD ASTRA was a bit like putting on a PETER PAN stage production. You’re strung up on wires and, in this one, we’re in tight, confined spaces and it’s not like you’re just hanging, because only bits of your body are hanging. And so, you’re being pulled in all sorts of uncomfortable areas, and yet you have to project the calm and relaxed state of zero gravity. You do get used to that. So, then you can get to the place where emotions can still come out and you’re not just sitting there strained, trying to hold your skull up while the blood is rushing to your head and you’re feeling literal pressure. Meanwhile, wearing the spacesuit was like putting on a garbage bag, and then putting a snowmobile suit over the top of it. But I don’t know, on every film we do, there’s a relative degree of discomfort. Even with Cliff, every morning I had to put on the scar prosthetics. It comes with the territory. We’ve grown to expect that.

DR. MOHAMED SHARKAS
A SMILE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS
ABULABAN DENTAL CLINIC
eing a member of the Royal B College of surgeons in Ireland, Dr. Mohamed Sharkas
who has a BSc in Dentistry from MSA shares with us the secret behind Abulaban Dental Clinic, tips to maintain healthy teeth and the latest trends in teeth whitening in an up-close and personal talk with Amira Tharwat.
Tell us more about yourself… I’m a 30 years old Aquarius. I’m married and about to be a father. I graduated from MSA with a BSc in Dentistry, and I expanded my knowledge when I studied in the Royal College of surgeons in Ireland and currently I am a member in RCSI. What is the secret behind Abulaban Dental Clinic’s major success? Dedication and consistency. Behind every successful man there is a woman, does that apply to you? Yes, it does. I was blessed to have an incredibly supportive mother, who filled in the shoe of a mother and a father since my father lived abroad my whole life as he is a doctor in Saudi Arabia. I was also lucky to get married to a very supportive wife, who paves the way for me to make sure I constantly give my best. You are the dentist of a lot of celebrities in the Arab world, would you share with us some of the names? It’s an honour to be labeled as a celebrity dentist. Celebrities seek perfection and when it comes to their smile they tend to be very careful selecting their dentist who can take care of their look. When I take the lead I do my best to make my work stand out.
LOUNGE 38
What do you think is the reason behind this trust? Explaining the whole procedure step by step and involving the patient in the treatment plan. What are the biggest mistakes we do to our teeth? And how can we avoid them? There are common mistakes that people do all the time without even knowing. Let’s admit the fact that the majority of people go to the dentist when they become in pain even though every person should schedule a dental visit at least 3 times a year. Not flossing is a problem that we tend to do. Other problems include, brushing only in the morning, brushing too hard, brushing in the wrong way (up and down movements cause abrasion of teeth), daily use of mouthwash products some of which are not for daily use as they cause staining, and not brushing right away after eating sweets. That’s why we always make sure to keep posting tips and advice on our page to help our patients. What is the best method for whitening? There is no one best method, it depends on your case. Some patients do need office bleaching, where we use the most updated method zoom ‘4.’ Other cases don’t require such intervention, home bleaching is more than enough. Home bleaching is not the same as these products
available on the counter, the patient has to come to the dental office, where we take impressions and give her/him specific trays for her/his teeth and professional bleaching material to be applied using these trays. Is there a permanent whitening technique? Or do all methods require constant visits to maintain the colour? Unfortunately, no whitening is permanent! And whoever advertises for that is only pulling a stunt. The period of your next whitening appointment depends on the type of food you consume; for example, people who consume a lot of coffee, tea, dark coloured sodas and food that may stain would need a shorter period for their next whitening session. While people who don’t consume a lot of these drinks and food might be able to keep their bright smile for a year. So, it’s all depending on how we do to our teeth. What are the main reasons that cause teeth to turn yellow? Smoking, coffee, soda drinks and bad oral hygiene. What is the difference between veneers and lumineers? And which do you recommend? The difference between veneers and lumineers is the technique and how much we reduce from
the tooth. I don’t have a preference to either one, both give a whiter and a brighter smile, both do improve the appearance of misaligned teeth, both have a natural look if done right, both are made of a thin porcelain layer, both are equally strong and durable, and both don’t stain or change colour with time. It’s the patient’s case that allow the dentist to decide on which technique to use. What are the latest techniques when it comes to braces? The revolution in dentistry is very fast, we almost can’t keep up with its speed, orthodontics, commonly known as braces, are no exception to that, especially in the era where we have the digital revolution invading the dentistry world, we have the TADs (temporary anchorage devices) clear and invisible braces, orthopedic treatment with PROPEL, customized smile design systems, and so much more. How often should a person visit a dentist? At least every 6 months. Besides being a dentist, what are your hobbies? My main hobby is far away from my career, my family and my best friends know that I have passion in collecting limited action figures and statutes of superheroes. I travel all around the world to buy the rarest items, and I have a nice exhibition of them at home. What are your dreams for Abulaban Dental Clinic in the future? To contribute in the world of dentistry and to change lives through brighter smiles.

You’re A
Shopaholic
ho doesn’t love shopping? Of course, we all do, but are you W addicted to shopping? If you can identify with these signs or even a few, and you have been honest with yourself that you do
have a bit of a problem at times, now is the time to step up and take ownership. Yara El Hashimi brings you 7 signs you’re a shopaholic..
1 2 3 4
You Never Have Enough Money You will find yourself either borrowing money or reaching for your credit card to pay for things. When you go out of budget while shopping, this splurge will affect important expenses such as, utilities, groceries or maybe your retirement savings contributions. You will find yourself running out of money in savings and certainly don’t have any money set aside for emergency. Lying or Hiding Purchases Other than the fact that you’re basically self-sabotaging your current financial situation, there will always be a lingering voice at the back of your head shaming you for overspending, but this will probably only propel you back to the store. You may in some cases downplay how much something really costs, how often you shop or simply hiding those items. Buying New Unnecessary Things You will constantly find yourself buying things you don’t even need before you’ve even used or worn the previously purchased items. So for example, if you found yourself on a stroll of buying dresses and then open up your wardrobe to discover you’ve got 4 or 5 dresses still with the tags hanging on, this is a definite sign that you need to do something about this problem. Friends & Family are Concerned Your friends and family confronted you and shared with you their concerns about your shopping habits, and the way you’re managing your personal finances. This may make you angry, ashamed or a whole range of uncomfortable emotional feelings. But remember, if these people are strong enough to tell you what they think and raise their concerns about you, its coming from a good place. They are trying to

guide you towards a better path, and this is particularly important if they’re able to argue with evidence. If they are able to show credit card statements with a cold heart truth or open up the closets with all of these labels and tags hanging off, that means its really serious and that its actually in your face, but you’re choosing to bury your head in the sand with this problem. Anxiety When You Don’t Shop Almost like that feeling of going out for the day leaving your mobile phone at home, it’s almost like you feel naked without it and when you do put yourself on a shopping ban, you quickly find that you retaliate by getting even and maxing out your credit card. Form of Escapism You’ll find yourself shopping out of a reaction to an uncomfortable situation or feeling. When you go through a period of depression and find yourself always shopping, this is another sign that you should be aware of. The only happiness you get at this point is when people compliment you on what you’re wearing, which automatically helps elevate your mood. That is a classic sign of what a lot of people experience with themselves when they tend to do a lot of luxury shopping. So, if you tend to binge on comfort food after a bad day, you’re more likely to indulge in a shopping spree, too. Experiencing a Euphoric High or Rush for Shopping Do you ever find yourself feeling anxiously happy when you’re about to shop or during shopping? You feel this rousing emotion and excitement running through you knowing that you’re going to have a great experience. You have to bear in mind that it’s very short-lived and you will most probably come crashing back down.
