Preliminary Design Rendering Techniques Using SketchUp in conjunction with graphic programs
2015-July-24
Preliminary Design Rendering Techniques In anticipation of the upcoming preliminary presentation to the various committees and groups, Tracy has asked that we begin to consider techniques that could be used to illustrate the four architectural design proposals. Since there are a series of schools and with a number of individuals working on the design, the thought was that a shared rendering approach should be developed amoung the design group using techniques that all members could utilize. Of those techniques the following throughts are initially considered.

Models would be developed in SketchUp Line types that are with minimal edge or have a hand sketch quality. Filters from with Photoshop could be used such as watercolor, daub, dodge and burn or other features to give the rendering a less dense and hard-edged apprearence.
The following pages contain various techniques used by multiple artist and designers that may provide some possible techniques or approaches for the preliminary design renderings. Each of the illustrations used SketchUp as the foundational program, with Photoshop, Piranese or other digial imaging programs. It would be beneficial to review the illustrations in the event there are features that could incorporated into the preliminary design renderings.

Preliminary Design Rendering Techniques This rendering is highly based in SketchUp using line, white solid color and a cream background. Shadow is also utilized to lend interest to the setting.

Preliminary Design Rendering Techniques Using minimal edge lines, color is used both within SketchUp and added in Photoshop. The technique is rather simple but uses a dynamic field of view and shadows to lend interest and variety.

Preliminary Design Rendering Techniques
Preliminary Design Rendering Techniques SketchUp is used as the foundation for the line. Materials and lighting are incorporated using what seems like a V-Ray add-on. The rendering technique is unique in that it ranges from highly rendered with low-saturated color to loose hand sketch.

Preliminary Design Rendering Techniques SketchUp is used as the foundation for the line. Materials and lighting are incorporated using what seems like a V-Ray add-on and Photoshop. The rendering technique is unique in that it ranges from highly rendered with high saturated color to loose hand sketch. People, street and vegetation are used to lend context and subdue the scale of the architecture.

Preliminary Design Rendering Techniques Piranesi is incorporated with SketchUp to give the line work a strong & striking apprearence. What makes this a dynamic rendering is the use of low opaticty brush strokes. This approach is unique and may take practice to achieve uniformly among the team. Colors are desaturated and monochromatic with hints of accent color.

Preliminary Design Rendering Techniques SketchUp is used in a minimal manner, with most features added using a collage technique. Colors are desaturated and reflect the nature of the autumn setting.

Preliminary Design Rendering Techniques SketchUp is used as the primary tool, forming the foundation for the color and line work. A striking background is used in Photoshop to provide a strong context.

Preliminary Design Rendering Techniques SketchUp is used as the foundation however, all linework has been omitted from the final. Color was added in the model, a series of Photoshop filters were used to lend the rendering a watercolor variation of color and texture.
