WHAT IS COOL? “You just put your lips together and blow” TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT - LAUREN BACALL

The Christmas season is just around the corner… The front cover of this issue features a real “GENTLEMAN”, Robert de Niro, a versatile man in all his professional scope as an actor and a businessman... We’ll see him this year in his new film, “THE IRISHMAN”. In this edition we also pay a small tribute to Lauren Bacall, “SLIM”, in the Icons section. “I cannot deny that since I was a child there have been several actresses and actors of classic cinema for whom I’ve always had a soft spot... I was captivated by their beauty and talent, and by certain films engraved in my memory.” So I hope you enjoy it. We review the intense life of John D. Rockefeller, a great businessman of his time, from whom we can surely learn something... And of course we’ll make a trip to New York this Christmas with NUBA viajes. We have an indispensable appointment at this time of year, the Rockefeller Center, where every year thousands of people gather to enjoy the lighting of the incredible Christmas tree. “Christmas is a very special time to be enjoyed, and to be aware of the most disadvantaged in our immediate surroundings. Be supportive, and pay special attention to your children, parents, family and friends… Enjoy every moment, because time is unique and unrepeatable.” For those who aren’t familiar with Marbella’s spectacular cuisine and don’t want to waste time, we’ve made a selection of the 10 restaurants you can’t miss. Enjoy the interviews which, as in every edition, we carry out with outstanding businessmen and women from Marbella, and the articles on Fine Jewellery, the Environment, and much more... I hope you enjoy reading this issue, and I take my leave with a phrase by J. Ernst Nilson, in order to be stronger in 2020: “EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE... THE IMPOSSIBLE SIMPLY TAKES LONGER.” We just have to be determined and fight for our dreams. HAPPY 2020!

F

or many film buffs, Robert de Niro is the best actor of all time. The man of a thousand roles, capable of transforming himself into the character that his part demands. A multifaceted, self-made actor, who has managed to turn cinema into an artform, while never forgetting to contemplate life with a genuine entrepreneurial passion. His real name is Robert Anthony de Niro Jr., although he is known as Robert de Niro. Actor, producer and entrepreneur by profession. It is impossible to hear his name without recalling a filmography that has led him to be considered one of the best actors of all time. To get to know Robert de Niro’s background, we must go back in time to the chance encounter of his parents, Virginia Holton and Robert de Niro, in a painting lesson. Virginia, a painter and poet, of English, German, French and Dutch descent. Robert, an abstract expressionist painter and sculptor, of Italian and Irish ancestry. In a house overflowing with art, in the

New York neighbourhood of Little Italy, Robert de Niro was born and grew up. Remembered by his classmates as a shy boy with very fair skin, Robert de Niro has maintained an unwavering friendship with some of those childhood pals over the years.

SOME OF HIS BESTKNOWN FILMS WOULD BE

WITH SCORSESE To help him overcome his shyness, his parents decide to sign him up for drama classes. His debut on the stage is at the age of ten, playing the part of the lion in The Wizard of Oz. It was the awakening of a passion that led him to leave high school at the age of 16 to try to become an actor. In this endeavour, Robert de Niro enrolls in the Stella Adler Studio of Acting, and later in

the Actors Studio, directed by Lee Strasberg. The die had been cast. CONSOLIDATION AS AN ACTOR Robert de Niro’s film career begins in 1963, when he is 20 years old. His first appearance in the cinema is with the director, Brian de Palma, who gives him a role in the film The Wedding Party. It marks the beginning of a friendship that leads him to meet different film directors, including Martin Scorsese, with whom he instantly hits it off. Some of the best-known films in Robert de Niro’s career would be with Scorsese. Taxi Driver (1976), set in New York in the 70s, acquires cult status with its mythical quote “You talkin’ to me?”, and is considered one of the best in the history of cinema. A year later, de Niro stars in Scorsese’s New York, New York, and later in Raging Bull, Cape Fear and Casino. One of Robert de Niro’s specialities is playing tough, problematic, emotionally unstable characters, sometimes actual sociopaths, although

20 EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE

Robert De Niro EL04.indd 20

the actor has participated in films of all kinds of genres, including comedies. In order to always ensure an outstanding performance, De Niro spares no efforts or resources, carrying out rigorous studies of the physical and psychological traits of each role to later be able to get into character. In 1974, de Niro spends four months in Sicily learning to speak a Sicilian dialect, so as to give a credible performance as Don Vito Corleone, in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather II, thus landing one of the best-known roles of his career, which earns him an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Three years later, he learns to play the saxophone for New York, New York. And in Raging Bull (1980), the actor gains 27 kilos and learns to box in order to become Jake LaMotta. His extraordinary characterisation and portrayal of the character, considered one of the greatest of all time, earns him an Oscar for Best Actor. In the 90s, at the peak of his his film career, de Niro continues starring in successful films, such as Heat (1995), with Al Pacino. In 2004, he reaches another professional milestone, by voicing the character of “Don Lino”, the villain of the animated film Shark Tale. And in his role as a producer, the staging of the musical We Will Rock You, a collection of Queen’s greatest hits, is notable. In recent years, de Niro has starred in other films, such as Freelancers, The Big Wedding or The Bag Man. His latest film is The Irishman, by Martin Scorsese, in which they work together again twenty years after their previous collaboration. In The Irishman, Scorsese tells the life story of a legendary hitman of the American mafia. Produced by Netflix, the film cost 150 million euros, it is the longest film-making process of Scorsese’s career, and with its 209 minutes, the longest film he has directed. After its world premiere in New York in late September, the film has arrived in Europe with its screening at the London Film Festival. Critics have unanimously highlighted the performance of Robert de Niro and the subject matter of the film, which has already been described as a “masterpiece” by such renowned critics as Slash Film’s Chris Evangelista.

A PRIVATE LIFE FAR FROM THE LIMELIGHT In contrast to his work as an actor, very little is known about Robert de Niro’s private life. Perhaps due to his natural shyness, he has preferred to steer clear of the limelight unless it focused on his professional life. In 1976, he married Diahnne Abbott, with whom he had two children. After their divorce, he became the father of twins with the model, Toukie Smith, and he had two more children during his marriage to the actress, Grace Hightower.

After overcoming cancer, in 2016 Robert de Niro reveals to the press that his son Elliot, born in 1998, has autism. Despite requesting respect for his personal life, the actor decides to make it public to promote research into the disorder and to help other people with the same condition. ROBERT DE NIRO AND MARBELLA A versatile man like no other, de Niro has not only focused his career on the world of cinema. In the late 80s, the actor starts investing in the New York neighbourhood of Tribeca, co-founding the film studio, TriBeCa Productions, and organising the TriBeCa Film Festival. In the late 1980s, the actor makes his first visit

to Nobu Matsuhisa’s sushi restaurant in Los Angeles, and falls in love with his revolutionary, innovative proposal of Japanese cuisine. It would take four years to convince Matsuhisa to take the brand to Tribeca, but he finally succeeds. With a space designed by David Rockwell, the brand is gaining popularity, exporting the concept to hotels and restaurants around the world, with three partners: Nobu Matsuhisa, Meir Teper and Robert de Niro. In 2009, the shareholders approached Trevor Horwell and Struan McKenzie, who were entrusted with leading the strategic focus in growing Nobu Hotels, whose mission is to deliver memorable experiences by redefining luxury based on hospitality and unbeatable service. With an internationally consolidated model, each Nobu hotel reflects the idiosyncrasies of the place it is in, always with the highest standards of excellence and warmth. Values always endorsed by Robert de Niro, the best ambassador of a truly innovative brand in this new concept of luxury, which came to Marbella in 2018. NOBU HOTEL MARBELLA The inauguration of Nobu Hotel Marbella in Puente Romano was attended by Robert de Niro and chef Nobu Matsuhisa, and it exceeded all expectations. When the evening fell there was a big celebration, with music and cocktails, later giving way to the Sake Ceremony, a Japanese tradition performed by the owners of the chain at the inaugurations of the establishments. After the inaugural tape was cut, an exquisite dinner was served. The actor praised the local products, such as the seafood and fish, as well as the Mediterranean culture which is so present in Marbella. “It’s a pleasure to have a Nobu Hotel in Marbella because I love coming to Spain,” the actor commented to the guests throughout the night. The latest hotel to be opened in Spain is Nobu Barcelona, arriving after those in Marbella and Ibiza. In all of them you can enjoy minimalist Japanese luxury which, together with the local nuances, define a unique sensory experience, and transform the Nobu hotels into a temple of glamour and good taste. As a world-famous artist, de Niro continues to provide creative leadership to the Nobu brand, which has become one of the main objectives in his entrepreneurial activity. EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE 21

EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE 23

hef Nobu Matsuhisa, Executive Chef & Owner - known to the world simply as “Nobu” - is the acclaimed and highly influential chef proprietor of Nobu and Matsuhisa restaurants located across five continents. Born and raised in Saitama, Japan, Nobu served a rigorous apprenticeship at a respected sushi bar in Tokyo. It was not long before his dreams of seeing the world moved him to open a sushi bar in Peru. A classically trained sushi-chef, Nobu was challenged by the new culture and regional ingredients, which kindled his inventive style, known today as Nobu Style. After three years in Peru, Nobu moved to Argentina, then home to Japan, then on to Alaska, before finally settling in Los Angeles. Nobu opened his first restaurant in the United States, Matsuhisa in Beverly Hills in January 1987. An instant success, it was here that his relationships with Robert De Niro and Meir Teper began, leading the trio to open their first Nobu restaurant together in 1994.

28

Tell us about how your career started. I started out by learning the art of sushi-making with an apprenticeship at a respected sushi bar in Tokyo. At the age of 22, one of the regular customers invited me to open a restaurant in Lima, Peru. I had never left Japan, and my dream was to travel the world. When I went to Peru, I realised that different cultures meant different foods - I was so excited to taste their food and to learn about their culture… After Lima, I went back to Japan. A friend of mine then introduced me to Anchorage Alaska. After 50 days of working straight after the grand opening, it was my day off on Thanksgiving Day and my partner called me to tell me that there was a fire. I has lost hope in my career, but a friend convinced me to start again and I eventually settled down in LA. In 1987, I opened my first restaurant in Beverly Hills, Matsuhisa. How did you start your business venture with Robert De Niro?

Robert was a regular customer at Matsuhisa. One day, out of the blue, he asked me to open a restaurant with him in New York. I flew over to look at the site but eventually, I said ‘Bob, thanks for the offer but it’s too early’. Robert continued dining at Matsuhisa, and eventually took me aside again. He said, ‘I’ve been waiting four years, now can you come to New York?’ I was surprised he had waited for me, because he’s a big star. I thought, ‘This guy I can trust’, and we opened a restaurant. What is Nobu style cooking? It means simple Japanese cooking using some of the finest ingredients and styles from Peru such as cilantro, jalapeno peppers and ceviche. Why did you decide to expand into hospitality? We noticed that when people were asking us to open Nobu restaurants in new cities, it was mostly inside hotels. The pattern was always the same – the restaurants would be a success, and

2/12/19 18:10

the hotels would thrive. So one day Robert said, ‘Why don’t you open a hotel?’ and that’s how it started. What are the values you’ve brought to your hotels from your restaurants? The last couple of years have been exciting because I have seen my values transcend the dining room. The Nobu experience remains true in whichever form. Detail is key. I spend a lot of time in hotels, travelling ten months in each year, so I know what requires attention. I have learnt that it takes time to build a team strong enough to deal with the challenges, and that training is invaluable. Sushi is such an ingredient-focused cuisine how do you maintain that level of quality on a global scale? The quality of the fish is the most important consideration, wherever you are. At my first restaurant, the food cost was 50 per cent. I chose all the fish myself daily. Although I didn’t make any money, it meant that I got a reputation for quality - something I’ll never compromise. We have restaurants all over the world and we use the freshest local ingredients. There’s no central buying policy and the menus reflect the best ingredients available in each country. We grow our own rice in California and will go to such lengths to maintain quality. What’s your favorite thing about hotels? I travel 10 months a year and in every city, I stay in a hotel. You spend most of the time in the room, so you have to have a nice, comfortable bed and a large bathroom with a big showerhead in the shower. I like an iPhone plug near the bed, a big-screen TV. It’s the details that make it comfortable. I like warm service, like a home away from a home. Black cod in miso is a staple of Nobu restaurants. What’s the signature dish of the hotels? Black Cod is special because it is something I had started. My other special dish at Nobu is scrambled eggs donburi. In any country, eggs are always served for breakfast and I wanted to create a breakfast dish, Nobu style. For scrambled eggs donburi, it is served with rice, grilled salmon and seaweed. The scrambled eggs are also cooked in tomato juice and onion. What’s the difference between feeding someone dinner and having them spend the night? In the restaurant, people are spending a few hours eating, drinking, in a beautiful surroun-

“I REALISED THAT DIFFERENT CULTURES MEANT DIFFERENT FOODS” ding with excellent service. In the hotel, there are more team members, more points of service, more time, and we need to be sure to take care of our guests every minute through checkin, housekeeping, and room service. How do you keep the quality of food consistent throughout all Nobu Hotels and Nobu restaurants? I like to test my food with Robert because he has been all over the world and when he comes to visit, he always says he just wants a little bit but when I send more dishes and I see him keep eating, it makes me smile. It means he still loves my food. Tell me about your team. We keep growing, because we have such a good team. Yes, it was my philosophy, but each person brings with them a wealth of experience and they might know for example, the best wasabi in that area for that particular restaurant.

Tell me about Peruvian cuisine. I am happy to share my experience of Peruvian food with the world, because it is tasty and very similar to Japanese food. They use fresh produce and they have great spices and chilli, which I started using, as I felt it complemented my food. Why is a spa important to have in hotels? I travel 10 months a year. After a flight, the muscles tighten up, so it is great for business people to unwind and loosen up. After the spa, I like to use the gym as it helps with my jetlag. What is the one thing you must always travel with? My swimming goggles. I used to carry my own knife, but now every Nobu kitchen has my knife as well as a pair of my running shoes. What do you miss most about home when you’re away? Of course, I miss my family the most. EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE 29

NOBU

MATSUHISA El maestro cocinero

E

Él dijo: “He estado esperando cuatro años, ¿ahora puedes venir a Nueva York?”

The architects of Marbella’s first luxury, sustainable home, UDesign, have been honoured with the top award in Spain by the International Property Awards, in the category “Architecture Single Residence”. Villa Alcuzcuz will now compete with the rest of the world for the coveted title of “World’s Best”. Villa Alcuzcuz is 1.460 m2 of pure design, but it’s much more than just another fabulous villa – it’s Marbella’s first luxury house designed under Passive House Regulations and Standards. This means it is environmentally friendly to an exceptionally high degree with a very low carbon footprint. The development company, Bright, is proud to have created the first luxury, sustainable property in Marbella’s high-end market and is hoping this initiative will be continued by others. Lowering our carbon footprint is something we should all be doing. Thanks to Passive House regulations and standards, our homes can actually help us to achieve a sustainable lifestyle. Energy efficiency lies at the heart of the Passive House concept. Over the course of a year, a Passive House uses no more than the equivalent of 1.5 litres of oil or 1.5 m3 of natural gas (15kWh) to heat each square metre of living space. This can equate to more than a 90 %reduction in space heating and

cooling energy use, compared to consumption in a typical building stock, while a conventional new build still requires 6 to 10 (or even more) litres of oil per year and square metre of living space, depending on building quality and location. In addition to the Passive House insulation system, Villa Alcuzcuz uses an aerothermal ventilation system and solar panels for the water supply, the underfloor heating and the LED lighting system. Villa Alcuzcuz sits on one of the highest plots in the exclusive Reserva de Alcuzcuz on the Ronda Road and enjoys breathtaking views over Los Arqueros Golf to the Mediterranean Sea and Africa beyond.

I’M NOT SUPERHUMAN, I JUST NEVER GIVE UP

What is happiness for you? Happiness changes with time. I think my happiness was very egoistic until I was 30-35 years old, after that, happiness switched. The focus was only on me, because I needed to understand where I was. Now I’m more comfortable with myself, happiness is about making other people happy. It’s like at Christmas - it’s more fun to give someone a gift than to receive one. That’s why happiness is sharing. And success? Success is very individual, and it also changes with time. For me, success is when you do something for yourself, but it makes changes for others. For example, if I have a really good restaurant; people love the food, I make money, and third, it inspires other people to make the quality of the food and the sustainable quality of everything better. I think success should be based on your own personal gain, because if you aren’t happy yourself, you can’t make other people happy. It’s also about giving other people the chance to share your knowledge. How did you decide to be a coach and go all over the world giving lectures? I think it began when I started my adventures back in 1994. For example, when I was kayaking from Stockholm to Africa, people asked me: “How long did it take?” - “Six months”. “How many hours did you kayak every day?” - “12 hours.” “Did you want to give up?” - “Yes, every day.” “But you didn’t?” - “No.” “Why not?” - “I don’t know.” I started thinking about why I hadn’t given up and I realised I have a lot of motivational strategies for myself which people are curious to hear. I believe the impossible doesn’t exist, we’ve created the word to explain things we don’t understand. 500 years ago, everything inside this room was impossible. An iPhone in the 13th century, or electricity in the Stone Age… Maybe in 500 years time, all our dreams will be standard, because the impossible is always changing. It’s important to understand that everything we do is possible, you just have to find the right solution. So these things encouraged people to change their mindsets, and that’s when I started coaching and giving lectures. I need to show people that if I can do it, anyone can. If I can climb Mount Everest, anyone can. What we must understand is that the power is within ourselves. You say the difference between humans and animals is that we have dreams and make plans to reach our goals. Do you think people could live without goals or success? Happiness is built on 3 things: having something meaningful to do, something to look forward to, and someone to share it with. For example, a dog’s vision is what it’s going to eat and where it’s going to sleep. What makes it complicated for us is having huge dreams, we’re never happy because we can’t always achieve them. We need to understand how to be happy in the present, with what we have, and if you don’t have what you want or what makes you happy, try to change. Life is about change, about evolution, and evolution means getting better all the time. EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE 39

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Why is EXPLORING important? Why do we need to step outside our COMFORT ZONE? Well, going back to evolution, in order to move forward, you need to step outside your comfort zone. If I tell you to run five metres, that’s within your comfort zone and you can do it. But if I tell you to run a marathon, it’s outside your comfort zone and you have fears: “Will I look ridiculous when I’m running?”, “Will I not make it?”. But that doesn’t mean you can’t overcome those fears, it means you have to step outside your comfort zone. Exploration is not a geographical journey, it’s an inner discovery of your own true potential. Every time you step outside your comfort zone, you learn something, even if it’s a failure or a mistake. Inside, you are always going round in circles, asking “What if…?” If you never do it,

you’ll be 90 years old, looking back on life and asking yourself the same questions. I love the concept of karaoke. People who can’t sing get up and sing on stage in front of other people. I know people who are business leaders, superstars, actors… They’d never sing karaoke, because it’s outside their comfort zone, but they can go to a business meeting in front of ten thousand people. People should do things that make them feel uncomfortable in order to understand it wasn’t so bad. So, risk is necessary to reach a goal? You can’t reach a summit in your personal life, love, relationships, business, adventure... if you don’t take risks, calculated risks. If somebody asked me, “Would you be afraid to stand on top of a building with a parachute, and

jump off?” I’d say, “No, I wouldn’t be afraid”. “Oh, do you jump off buildings?” - “No.” “Have you ever jumped off a building?” - “No.” “So, why wouldn’t you be afraid?” - “I wouldn’t be standing there if I wasn’t willing to do it!” You work coaching people all over the world. You train them to solve problems under EXTREME STRESS and to think differently… As a personal coach for world leaders, how would you tell them to face the present environmental situation and poverty in the world? THE MAIN THING IS THE WILL TO DO. We have all the solutions, but the question is, are we willing to change our standards and our mindsets? I was discussing the difference between WANT and NEED with the girls earlier: You want 200

40 EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE

Entrevista Johan Ernst Nilson EL04.indd 40

2/12/19 18:19

pairs of shoes, but you need maybe 20? It’s a mixture of what you need and what you want. The world leaders must understand that we must take things back to basic levels. Leaders should be ROLE MODELS and live a life that people could look up to. If you stop investing trillions of dollars in the military every year, you can solve the world’s energy problems, poverty problems, the whole planet... The question is if we want that, but it’s up to the leaders. I don’t know if you have watched the documentary about minimalism. What do you think about this? Being minimalistic is also a question of what we need and what we want. I’ve just moved from Stockholm to France and I put everything in a warehouse. Now I’ve been without everything for 6 months, and I’m like… What do I actually miss from those hundred boxes I had at home? I have a lot of stuff. I’ll need some things later, for example, my bicycles, my sleds, my climbing gear from the Himalayas, but some things I won’t. It was a bit of a wake-up call. I put my home into boxes, now I live without those boxes and I still feel fine. I actually feel a bit better, because I don’t have the boxes, therefore I don’t worry about them. If that’s the minimalistic point of view, I’m getting there, yes.

you 5 years of meditation to reach. I’d rather do the 5 years of meditation, without taking drugs. In this case, you’ll reach it in a very natural way, so I do think that that Deepak is partly right. A lot of medication is a placebo, and what Deepak teaches is that we have all the answers in nature, in plants, that we need to look more at nature and at ourselves than using medicines to achieve happiness and cures. If you go out into the forest, everything has YIN and YANG, black and white. If we have the disease, there’s a cure, we’re just looking in the wrong places. Do you think it’s important to LEARN FROM OUR MISTAKES? I hope that when I die, I’ll hold the world record for making mistakes! The more mis-

you think it’s important to VISUALISE the GOAL before starting? Yes, I do think so. If I have a meeting where I’m going to sign a contract, I visualise myself signing the contract. It’s a law of attraction. If I want a house in France, I see myself in that house. I see myself going to bed there. If I can’t see myself reaching the summit of a mountain, and I think it’s impossible, I can’t do it. It’s important to visualise yourself reaching the goal to be able to achieve it. If you have a disease, it’s your mindset that’s important. I have friends who were told they had one year to live, and despite what the doctors said, that was 20 years ago and they’re still alive. We can overcome so much just believing in ourselves. Will-power is much stronger than we can ever imagine.

EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE, THE IMPOSSIBLE SIMPLY

TAKES LONGER

You were invited by DEEPAK CHOPRA, a writer and doctor, to discuss dreams, motivation and the meaning of life. What would you highlight about him? Deepak’s a friend of mine. He’s an interesting character. He mixes health and medicine together with the spiritual part, and he uses a lot of motivational YOGA MEDITATION for health purposes. He believes you can treat diseases with will-power and focus. You must understand that the medical companies are a big industry. They say you should take this pill for a headache - it might help - but that doesn’t mean that drinking tea and going to bed early wouldn’t do the same. Nobody advises you to do that because nobody makes money with it. Many people say that if you take this pill or drug, you’ll get to a level that would take

takes I make, the more I learn... The only real mistake is not daring to make mistakes. It’s important to understand that in order to reach the next level of understanding, of happiness, of everything… we need to take risks. You may fail or you may win, but if you don’t try, you’ll never find out. What is the CONTRADICTION of HUMANITY in your opinion? The earth wouldn’t have any problems without humanity. When I die, I’d like to have left something behind that makes this planet a little bit better, because with time, if 7 billion people do the same thing, we’ll advance, but right now we’re going backwards. Humans are part of nature. Once we understand that, we can achieve balance with nature and become part of the ecosystem. WIN BEFORE YOU START… This is an expression you often use in your lectures, so do

Who do you admire, and why? I admire everyone who steps outside their comfort zone. I admire the younger generation that is fighting for things we’ve messed up. I admire people who still smile, even though they have nothing - I know people who have everything and never smile. I admire people who use less to do more. I ADMIRE PEOPLE WHO MAKE CHANGES.

What’s your favourite book? It changes all the time, but for example, “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle. Since I’m studying Buddhism, also a lot of Dalai Lama interviews. He says that people can live without religion, but not without love and compassion. That must be the base of everything, if you don’t have love and compassion, it doesn’t matter what you believe in. I’ve just started reading “Sapiens“ and I’ve been told it’s going to be one of my favourites. We want to thank you for your contribution to the Hospital “Costa del Sol”. What do you think of Marbella? I like Marbella because it’s very international, lots of people from all over the world together in one place, but you still have the old Spanish traditions… The weather’s good, the food’s fantastic, but the best thing is the people.

NONTRADITIONAL DESIGN Traditionally, one thinks of architects designing the house from the outside, not from the inside out. UDesign does it differently. “All our designs start on the inside, especially with regard to views and available light, and we seldom know before we start how the outside will look. This may seem illogical to some, but to us it’s the right way to do it, and it’s one of the reasons we are very different from any other architecture and design company”, says Jason Harris, Creative Director of the team. “Sometimes, a house can look like a stunning piece of sculpture from the outside but inside it’s disappointing. We made a decision as a company that we would never compromise inside space and light at the expense of the outside. As one would expect, we make the outside as beautiful as possible, but only when the inside is perfect will we begin to look seriously at the outside. The planning of the furniture begins before the room itself is planned. It’s all about living space, furniture and light.” SO WHAT DETERMINES THE DESIGN? “One of the most important factors in the design of a home is the lifestyle of the future residents”, says Jason. “We talk a lot with our clients before starting the project, about probable occupant numbers, children, overnight visitors and so on. And about lifestyle, because how people live determines the kind of house they need. We look at the plot at different times of the day, keeping seasons in mind too, and we design for these factors just as much as any views the house might have.” “Our design always starts in the meeting of minds between client and architect, and that includes every aspect of the finished building, from the way the doors open to the exact position of the pool house. Getting it right means getting it right from the start.” UDesign’s in-house 3D artists work together with the architectural and interior design team to provide clients a glimpse into the future allowing them to visualise their home before it is even built.

EXCLUSIVE INVESTMENT

THE NEW MORTGAGE

MARKET By Santiago de la Cruz

58

EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE

De la Cruz EL04.indd 58

2/12/19 18:38

On 17 June 2018, the banks implemented the Mortgage Act that regulates the entire process of applying for a mortgage for natural or legal persons performing this activity in a professional capacity; when the borrower or the guarantor or warrantor is a natural person and the contract is intended for the purchase of a property for residential use; or when buying or retaining property rights over completed or projected properties, when the borrower or guarantor or warrantor is a consumer. This brought the signing of mortgage deeds to a halt in the months after the law came into force, and it is now, in this last quarter of the year, that we are seeing banks, notaries and clients dealing with the new regulations and struggling to comply with deadlines and requirements. Banks have to prepare two new documents: the ESIS and the FIAE. The ESIS is the European Standard Information Sheet, which must include all the specific and personalised information related to the contracted mortgage. The SWC is the Standardized Warning Card, which includes information on the most delicate clauses, including how interest is calculated if interest is variable, how multi-currency loans operate, cases in which interest is variable and has no ceiling, and cases of early termination and operability. Banks must present both documents together with the typical repayment schedule for the loan interest rate, with the amount of each instalment, the payment schedule and a document that indicates the expenses associated with the deed. Within a period of ten days before the signing of the mortgage deed, the bank must make all this information available to clients via the e-notary collaboration platform, so that clients may access and check the information, and raise and resolve any doubts or questions that may arise. If the mortgage is signed before this period has elapsed, it will be declared void. Once all the information has been received by the notary, the client must go to the notary office, and once any doubts have been clarified and questions answered, sign the acknowledgement test in the presence of the notary, which legally con-

firms that the client is fully aware of all the details and conditions of the mortgage contract. Having signed this notarial act in the presence of the notary, the client and the bank may sign the mortgage as from on the eleventh day after receiving all the information on the notary platform. So the client or their agent must go to the notary twice. Once to sign the notary test and again to sign the mortgage deed. As we can see, notaries are now subject to new requirements to provide information at no additional cost to the client or the bank. The expenses that have to be paid by the customer are also regulated. In principle, these will be the valuation, although there are already banks that assume this cost, and the arrangement fee, which is not a charge prohibited by law. The bank assumes the cost of stamp duty and expenses corresponding to the notary, registration and processing. The law has prohibited banks from connecting or linking other products to the mortgage, although banks get around this prohibition by subsidising or partially reducing the rate of the mortgage loan, depending on the products that the client contracts. Home insurance is still a requirement, but the bank cannot oblige the client to take out home insurance with a particular company. Regarding unfair terms, the role of prior checking by the notary or the client’s advisors is paramount. Floor clauses and the application of minimum interest rates disappear, and evictions - following mortgage foreclosure - are only anticipated when the borrower fails to repay twelve monthly payments, or 3% of the capital, during the first half of the life of the loans; or fifteen monthly payments, or 7% of the loan, during the second half of the mortgage loan. Interest for late payment cannot exceed the agreed interest rate plus three percentage points, and repayment interest – the interest paid by the client - cannot be negative (in other words, the bank will never pay interest to the client). The fee for early repayment is reduced, depending on the type of loan. At 0.25% on the amortised amount for variable in-

terest loans, if this occurs during the first three years; or 0.15%, if it occurs in the first five years and after these periods, depending on the option chosen, with no fee. With fixed-rate loans, the maximum fee may reach 2% of the amortised amount during the first ten years, or 1.5% if later, in cases where cancellation is to the bank’s detriment (if the market interest rates are lower at the time of cancellation than the interest rate agreed in the deed) Also new – and of special relevance in areas with foreign clients - is the possibility of converting the loan’s designated foreign currency to the currency in which the borrower receives their income, or the currency of the country in which they reside, which complicates the study of mortgages of citizens residing in countries that do not belong to the Euro Zone, because the exchange rate will be the rate established on the date on which the conversion is requested – at the prerogative of the client - and the bank will also be obliged to inform the client of the outstanding payment balance, and the right to re-convert the currency if the amount differs by more than 20% compared to what they would pay in euros. Although the purpose of the law is to protect users/consumers and provide them with more information, with a view to stimulating more contracts involving properties, it seems that until the application and implementation of the law builds trust in lenders, it may result in limiting familys’ access to mortgage loans. At the moment, currency fluctuations and the weakness of certain currencies is leading to greater restrictions on mortgage loans for foreign buyers/investors, so we need to be careful before informing our foreign clients - outside the Euro Zone – about free accessibility to mortgage loans for acquiring a second home, and to mention to clients that they should consider where to establish their place of residence, where they generate their income, and the currency in which this income is received, in order to provide them with a realistic assessment of their situation that allows them to take well-informed and secure decisions when planning their investments.

e’re with Raquel at the foot of Sierra Blanca, where she currently resides. How long have you lived in this wonderful house? We came to live here shortly after the birth of my second son, Iker, who would have been 2 months old at the time. That was at the beginning of 2006, but it seems like yesterday... And now Iker will be 14 years old on his next birthday. The truth is that we really enjoy our house, we like to make the most of family moments and share everything that’s happened to us during the day, as we’re a very close family. We love to laugh and do fun things. What is the daily life of a great businesswoman like? In other words, how do you combine work with family life? Running several businesses is very complicated, and precisely because of this, when I realised I couldn’t coordinate everything, I chose to integrate my children into my work projects in some way, balancing our work with their school assignments. We’ve made them part of our firms. It’s been a positive experience for them, learning how difficult it is to achieve things, and the satisfaction that comes from being able to work in something you’re passionate about. A woman who stays at home taking care of her children is neither a better nor a worse mother than the one who decides to fulfill their professional dreams. The important thing is what you convey to them with each of your actions.

What are your expectations for 2020? For 2020 there is already talk of an economic slowdown, and that type of message generates uncertainty and fear. For me, any message to that effect is a new professional challenge. For 2020 and the years that follow, what I do have clear is that I want to commit to innovation and invest in talent, always adapting the business strategy to the current market. As I always say: “Love what you do”. These are my expectations. How do you see the outlook for Marbella? I believe we’re coming into a new golden age for Marbella, more sophisticated and cosmopolitan, more discreet and somewhat removed from the spotlight of the tabloid press. It continues to be a retreat where celebrities of all kinds (artists, athletes, celebrities, but also members of the European royalty or Arab sheiks) come to rest and have fun. A modern, renewed Marbella, which still has a reputation for its international events, such as Starlite, or the many charity galas that are held in summer, as well as the top quality services it offers in restaurants, beauty, hotels, and every kind of luxury in general. Any new Year’s Resolutions? New projects? I think I rarely start the year without new resolutions, both professional and personal. I like to look to the future with optimism and positive energy, which I put into new ventures. So, new

projects? Yes, I always have some, but you must forgive me for keeping them to myself for the time being... I don’t like to talk about them until they become a reality. You’re obviously charismatic. Where does that business spirit come from? Everyone who knows me is well aware that my greatest inspiration has always been, and still is, my father. Like me, he was an entrepreneur, and he’s been a role model for me since I was a child. He set an example of perseverance, dedication and hard work, which is what impelled me to embark on my first business venture. Even now, he’s very present in my daily life, in every decision I make, and I’m firmly convinced that what I am today and everything I’ve achieved on a professional level is thanks to him. What kind of values do you convey to your children? I suppose like in any family, my husband and I care a lot about the values we convey to our children: courage, respect, gratitude, joy, solidarity, loyalty, generosity, tolerance, patience, justice and kindness... these are our values. What are you like on a personal level? How would you define yourself? With me, what you see is what you get. I’m quite transparent, I show my real self, and I fight for what I want. I admit that I have a strong personality, but at the same time, a big heart, with room for all my loved ones.

Who do you admire, and why? It’s really difficult to answer that question if I can only name one person! I think I admire many of my friends and family, for being the way they are, and for all the good things they bring us every day. But about a year ago, I travelled to Kenya with the NGO, World Vision. We spent several days with families there, participating in humanitarian aid programs. I felt a special connection with a girl of about 12 years of age, and I was surprised by her tremendous optimism, despite the difficulties she faced every day. There, they wake up every morning with a smile, eager to learn, to interact with others, to share... to continue enjoying life. I recall the phrase she wrote on the board of the school she attended: “Try and prosper in life.” A bedside book you find inspirational? Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens. It’s a classic, written by one of the great masters of literature. I read it for the first time when I was a teenager and it captivated me... it makes

an in-depth analysis of all the constants of the human condition, and invites you to reflect on them.

For 2020 and the years that follow, what I do have clear is that I want to commit to innovation, and invest in talent, always adapting the business strategy to the current market,

How do you form successful teams, Raquel? Because leading a team is quite a challenge... The first key aspect is to ensure that your employees are committed to the firm and its values, so it’s important that the leader is able to inspire. In order to do this, you really have to work on your emotions and look on each small achievement as a success. For a team to function, there must be commitment, trust, communication and coordination, and all this must be two-way.

without ever losing enthusiasm.

Not easy... any lessons in leadership? They’re lessons you learn during your professional career. There are four key aspects: EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE 65

Being a better person, to influence your work team, going beyond the workplace. The second is undoubtedly optimism, to transmit good energy and positivity to the rest of the team. The third is boosting self-esteem, and the fourth is happiness, which increases productivity and personal satisfaction. You’re a very versatile woman and a competent businesswoman. You did a degree in advertising, but you’ve dedicated yourself to managing several businesses, both beauty establishments and restaurants. How many firms do you currently run? I currently run three beauty establishments, two of our own brand, milk&roses, situated on the Golden Mile and in the Puente Romano Hotel, and a third in the Marbella Club Hotel, in addition to our Kids Spa, which specialises in children’s beauty parties, as well as our online store of luxury cosmetics. My first restaurant was rachel’s eco love, which we opened in the Puente Romano Hotel in 2014. Three years later, we opened the second rachel’s in the gourmet section of the Corte Inglés, and just over a year

ago, Lagom! Café, a cosmopolitan restaurant in the Puente Romano Tennis Club. Additionally, I publish Chic & Co every summer, a guide of all the fashionable places in Marbella. What do you love most about each of them? In general, I’d say the most exciting thing about all the businesses I manage is looking back and seeing how far we’ve come, and how far we still have to go. And the fact is, life is an ongoing learning process. You have to fight hard and put passion into it.

AND THE FACT IS, LIFE IS AN ONGOING LEARNING PROCESS. YOU HAVE TO FIGHT HARD AND PUT

PASSION INTO IT

What do you think your clients value most? Without a doubt, the quality of our service, which is achieved thanks to the first-class raw materials we use, but primarily, the human capital behind it all. This is the essence of success.

TAKUMI In Japanese, “takumi” means artisan, or master, and refers to someone who works with their hands. “TA” is the combination of the initials of the two master chefs, Toshio and Álvaro, who form a team, “kumi” in Japanese. A declaration of intent by two chefs who aim to portray the elegance of Japanese cuisine in the presentation of each of the proposals in their menu. In their quest for excellence, the Ta-Kumi team ensure that the fish is not only of the highest quality, but that it has also been treated and slaughtered in the optimum way. This has a direct influence on the colour and toughness of the flesh, avoiding fibrous pieces and guaranteeing the most tender and highest quality fish, which means a much more pleasant texture and taste in the mouth.

Naturally, Ta-Kumi’s menu offers an appealing range of nigiris made with the best products of the Malaga coast, such as horse mackerel, mullet or bream. Among the most popular are the shrimp with caviar, or the red prawn, and a must in any order, the seared nigiri, of mullet, fatty tuna and salmon. Given the delicate treatment the product receives, the sashimi is another must-try here, as it perfectly reflects the elegance of the exquisite presentation. As a result of their extensive careers and experience, Toshio Tsutsui and Álvaro Arbeloa delight the diner with an atmosphere of distinction and originality which can enjoyed both in the elegant dining-room and in the traditional bar, where you can watch the sushiman at work.

LADY 8 PETITE An ode to femininity and elegance

Conceived as an ode to femininity and elegance, the Lady 8 Petite preserves the attributes of its predecessor: an original creation that features the brand’s emblematic “8” design blended with the traditional gem-setting and natural dial expertise of Jaquet Droz. The delicacy of its perfectly rounded case is accentuated by a domed sapphire crystal. The Lady 8 Petite’s dial is ever so slightly redesigned to guarantee perfect readability. Developped in eight variations, the new Lady 8 Petite embraces the trends of its time, as well. Borrowing from contemporary fashion, two versions features a double-wrap strap, in a choice of black or blue grained calfskin. A symbol of femininity, it is also a discreet reminder of the astronomy from which watchmaking sprang forth.

Essentially

OMEGA

THE MARGINS OF PRECISION In watchmaking, the margins of precision can be measured by seconds. That may seem small to most people, but for OMEGA, those seconds represent a lifetime’s work. Even in 1848, when Louis Brandt sat down to create the company’s very first watches, his ambition was to produce the most accurate movements possible. This dedication led to the 19-ligne “OMEGA” calibre in 1894, which was so admired and revolutionary within the industry, it would soon become the company’s title. Indeed, OMEGA is perhaps the only watchmaker in the world to be named after the excellence of a calibre. How is Master Chronometer raising standard throughout the Swiss watch industry, a COSC “chronometer” certification is the desired end result. For OMEGA, it’s only the beginning. COSC testing only demonstrates the precision of a movement (-4/+6 seconds per day, tested in 5 positions). It remains an integral part of the OMEGA process, but since 2015, the brand has used this highly-respected standard as a starting point. Now, OMEGA also subjects its movements as well as its completed watches to 8 Master Chronometer tests over 10 days, including water resistance, temperature fluctuation and exposure to magnetic fields of 15,000 gauss.

EXCLUSIVE WATCHES

GRANDE SECONDE MOON The magic of reading time

An emblematic model of the Jaquet Droz philosophy, the Grande Seconde is adorned with a new watchmaking complication: moon phase display. In 2017, Jaquet Droz integrated the moon phase into one of its legendary models, the Grande Seconde, while remaining perfectly true to the silhouette of the timepiece whose two interlaced dials form a figure eight, the symbol of completion and plenitude, and lucky number of the brand known by its twin stars. A true mechanical marvel, the Grande Seconde Moon is also a piece of aesthetic treasure. Absolutely striking with its clean look and classic lines valued by Jaquet Droz, the ivory enamel version is adorned with an applied satin-finish red gold circular ring, echoing the light of the 43 mm case featured in the three available versions. The magic and poetic Grande Seconde Moon by Jaquet Droz is not simply a watch adorned with the luxurious effects of light of onyx, gold and silvery opaline. It is also an invitation to contemplation and reflection when faced with the mystery of the passage of time that Man has mastered by looking to the sky. Because the depths of night have never ceased to give meaning to life, since the dawn of time.

NEW MOON RISING over the grande seconde moon collection Jaquet Droz presents four new variations of the Grande Seconde Moon watch today. Buoyed by the collection’s successful debut, the astronomical Moon Phase makes a return in gold, steel, Grand Feu enamel and aventurine. The new Grande Seconde Moon combines the day-to-day practicality of precise hour, minute, seconds and date displays with the poetry of a 22-carat gold Moon Phase. Since the Moon Phase requires a greater level of precision, Jaquet Droz developed Mechanism 135, an in-house movement featuring a high precision 135-tooth wheel inside a Jaquet Droz 2660QL3 caliber. While a traditional 59-tooth movement accumulates an error of one day every two years and eight months, the Jaquet Droz Moon Phase need only be adjusted by one day every 122 years thanks to a corrector discreetly incorporated into the middle of the case. The precision of the Grande Seconde Moon movement is thus infinitely closer to the actual lunar month which lasts exactly 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 2.8 seconds. As well as the precision of the movement, these four new Grande Seconde Moon models lend a touch of poetry to the collection. The Moon is the favorite celestial body of watchmakers, bringing to every dial a quiet revolution, a new perception of time, an exclusive and poetic slice of astrological mystique that slips onto the wrist.

Can you share some tips with us on how to decorate a house for Christmas? Christmas, whichever country you are in, is meant to be the cosy, relaxing time of the year everybody looks forward to. We can always bring the cosiness by adding simple, small details you don’t normally have during the year, such as a bigger set of candles, or various light decorations, soft throws and cushions, fresh flower arrangements in certain colors to match your Xmas tree, or a house perfume that evokes Xmas. In my home, I go the extra mile to decorate the house, as I have a special Christmas bedding set in darker colors and fur throws to evoke winter, different cushion sets for the sofa, etc. Are there any trends in Christmas decoration, and if so, what would they be? Yes, absolutely. As in fashion or interior design, there are also Xmas trends, although I believe many families have their own “green/red/gold” combo they won’t change. Interior design trends that are being “extended” to Christmas décor include all sorts of lighting garlands that can be used not only as a tree decor, but also natural pale wood décor

and pale pastels, especially warm ones like orange or ochre. What is more and more visible is layering of unexpected decor on the tree, such as artificial flowers, berries or branches, toys or oversized items, such as ribbons. What would your tips be to dress a dining table? Something trendy would be to use blue hues in combination with warm accents, blues or blue-greens work very well with burnt orange, which is very in nowadays. Apart from dining table sets, you can add extra colors by using contrasting vases with fresh flowers in various colors and heights, bowls with fruit or vegetables, Christmas décor items, contrasting napkins etc. For elegant dining, something that never goes out of fashion is to mix metallics and whites. All you need to add are candles, fresh flowers, and some interesting underplates.

“Add extra colors by using contrasting vases with fresh flowers”

PALMERAS PROPERTY DEVELOPMENT Interview for Exclusive Life Magazine

Interior photos: Elin Roderstand / Photo of Olivia and Kristoffer: Coco Rubio

Palmeras Property Development is a real estate development brand pushing the boundaries of innovation and creativity. We had a talk to owners Kristoffer Enger and Olivia O Wickerts to learn more about their company and why they chose Marbella as their home. Who is behind Palmeras Property Development and what is a day-in-the-life of the Palmeras office? Palmeras Property Development is a small company owned by Kristoffer Enger and Olivia O Wickerts. Together we have built a great supportive team around us. Our primary partners who we consult and work with on a daily basis comprises of our architect company AMES, our exclusive sales agent Solvilla and certain key professionals within the industry. Together with our key partners we come up with out-of-the-box ideas and innovations. Despite the stressful and time consuming nature of project management, our complementary skills and support for one another enable us to carry out several large projects at the same time. It has always been a top priority for us to find the right mix of people that share the same enthusiasm and dedication to work with ambitious goals. Surrounding ourselves with professionals with the same level of passion for their work as we have, is very important for us and something we believe has to be in place in order to be successful. A day in the life of PPD consists of continuously looking to develop all our areas of expertise, comprising of creative thinking to architectural and design innovation. Why have you chosen Marbella as the right destination for Palmeras? Marbella was a natural choice to start as a developer given that we have both been visiting the Marbella area since the year 2000. Initially, Kristoffer started buying villas during the financial crisis. The idea was to rent, do minor refurbishments and re-sell when the market gained traction. However, when we noticed the influx and demand of the new millennials, we saw an opportunity to develop the business concept further to high-end quality luxurious villas. On the

back of this, we decided to create the Palmeras Property Development brand together. What makes you unique from other property developers on the coast? By pushing the boundaries of innovation and creativity in the development of luxury villas, we strive to achieve our main objective which is to adapt and maximize interior and exterior spaces with local surroundings, taking advantage of everything that the property has to offer. By integrating and combining the exterior with the interior, our ambition is to create a magical ambience throughout the villa thus resulting in the perfect inside/outside lifestyle. Can you share with us a recent project and why it stood out to you? We are very excited about our last project which was recently completed and expected to officially launch very soon. Until the official launch, we can only reveal a few details. Staying true to our main objective which is adapting and maximizing interior and exterior spaces with local surroundings, we are particularly pleased with the results achieved for this villa. With creative thinking we have managed to utilize both the interior and exterior space to its fullest, offering many attractive solutions not often seen in Nueva Andalucia.

The spacious interior living areas blend exceptionally well with the picturesque exterior entertainment areas, which combined results into the perfect inside/outside lifestyle. What exciting projects are you working on now and/or have scheduled for the year ahead? We have several projects, both ongoing and in the planning stage. In addition, we are adding two new projects to our portfolio with one being our first ever newbuild project. This is particularly exciting to us since this will give the opportunity to build the villa of our dreams without the limitations reform projects have. What can a client expect when working with Palmeras? Buyers of our villas will quickly notice how much we emphasize quality, attention to details and the use of luxury brands known for their superior quality. Important to also mention the service level we offer new owners. We always do our best to make sure the new owners are given as much information and service about the villa, in order to ensure a smooth transition and positive experience in the months after takeover. Can you talk us through your process? A number of factors have to be in place for us to take on new projects. However, the best ob-

jects for us are often the ones where the value potential is hidden and we need to be creative and innovative to visualize the final outcome and potential. Through multiple visits and brainstorming sessions together with AMES, we visualize the potential the villa has to offer and act accordingly with the main objective to adapt and maximize interior and exterior space with local surroundings, taking advantage of everything that the property has to offer. And finally, what is, in your opinion, the best thing about living in Marbella? Do you have any secret recommendations (maybe a restaurant or beach) that you can share with our readers? For us, the best thing about Marbella is the location and the area´s vast opportunities. Onehour east, you can enjoy the big city pulse of Malaga, one hour west you can enjoy the fantastic bohemian surf town of Tarifa, while two hours north skiing in Sierra Nevada can be experienced. The large variety of things to do here combined with the people living here from all over the world, Marbella is a fun and interesting place to live. Our favorite Palmeras spot is Boho Club – a newly opened restaurant with an amazing ambiance. Great interior, food, cocktails and a unique hip-luxury vibe. EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE 107

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

INTERVIEW WITH

SANTIAGO Domínguez

We’re at ‘Restaurante Santiago’ with its owner, the renowned and admired Marbella restaurateur, Santiago Domínguez. How long have you been in Marbella? Since the year 1957. Tell us about your professional career. I have very fond memories of my beach bar, ‘El Primero de Marbella’, on la Fontanilla Beach, where I set up the first draft beer in the province of Malaga. When did you open your flagship restaurant, Restaurante Santiago? It was back in 1973, before the current promenade existed. Which dish is most representative of the Restaurant? Honestly, there isn’t one in particular, because I like them all. The same dishes never stay on the menu for long. I like to change it. Fish and seafood are what best represent Restaurante Santiago. The lamb, as it’s from Burgos, is another dish I highly appreciate. We understand you have an extensive wine cellar. Which of your wines would you highlight? From many countries and places. My wines are a very important part of my professional and personal life. Romanée-Conti, a French wine, and of course, the Spanish Vega Sicilia, which, moreover, are two of my own favourites. A large number of celebrities have passed through here. Who do you remember most fondly and made the greatest impression on you? One cherished memory is of Christopher Lee, the famous Count Dracula, who far from striking fear, was a pleasant, endearing person. Meeting Sofia Loren certainly made an impression on me, a woman of spectacular beauty. Stunning! King Don Juan Carlos, a down-to-earth, affectionate man, very jovial. And an amusing visit was that of Paul Belmondo, as he and his girlfriend (at that time, hahaha), had to dress as chefs and stay inside the kitchen of the Restaurant, so as to

not be recognised by the paparazzi, until they left, and they were able to dine in peace. It was the Marbella of the old days, of glitterati… Which dish does everyone order in your Restaurant? Fish and seafood! The diners follow our recommendations, and they almost always opt for the fish or the seafood of the day. Which dish do you usually recommend? A good grouper, a magnificent snapper, or the always tasty sea bass. Have you ever considered retiring? I’ll leave that question up in the air... it depends!

Which chefs do you admire? Pedro Subijana, Martín Berasategui, Juan Mari Arzak, and of course, our Dani García, a young man with a very bright future.

Marbella is the land of opportunities

and I had mine...

What prizes have you received in your professional career and which is closest to your heart? I don’t remember the exact number, about 400 awards, and the one I remember most affectionately is the Gold Medal of this city, Marbella, to which I’m very grateful. I can’t forget my hometown, VADOCONDES, where my Burgos roots lie, but Marbella is the land of opportunities, and I had mine... I like to express my gratitude.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

¡depende! ¿A qué cocineros admiras?

DR. ANA PEDROL AND DR. BRUNO PEREIRA THE DIRECTORS OF ØNE SHARE A VISION:

We believe that the smile and the face mirror who we are and how we feel. If we feel sad we look down, our shoulders also point down, or when we feel excited our eyes are wide open and our body energized. Scientific studies show that it also works the other way around, meaning that, our outside also reflects in our inside. By changing the body posture for example, it affects how we feel. Here is an easy example: if we take a deep breath and focus our attention in our breathing, it relaxes us immediately. Or if we bring the chin up, our chest out and our shoulders up for a while, super heroe posture makes us feel more confident immediately. The same thing happens with the smile. We can start to change how we feel by just smiling. This tells a lot about the power of the smile and how it can shape our lives. If we don’t feel comfortable about our smile we won’t be a confident person. This issue can shape our personality, career and opportunities. We truly believe that “we don’t smile because we are happy, we are happy because we smile” and that’s what makes our profession so passionate.

Øne Clinic is dedicated to facial aesthetics, treating the smile and the face as a whole, unique for every person respecting nature with and holistic and organic approach. Traditionally, when someone tries to improve his or her smile they often go to a dentist they might have heard about. Once the smile is treated, more often than not, they realize that the teeth are too white and too big and perfectly aligned and there is a lack of harmony and balance to the face. The smile is the centrepiece of beauty, and with that in mind the smile needs to balance and enhance facial aesthetics, not detract it. When the aesthetic dentist works side to side with the plastic surgeon to enhance facial aesthetics, the outcome is more natural since balance and harmony all starts with the face and both specialists work towards one goal. The lips and teeth cannot be treated separately, otherwise, we will never achieve a truly organic and natural result. By working together, the Aesthetic dentist can create beautiful smiles that harmonize with the face. Øne is more than a clinic it’s a place designed to take care of the wellbeing.

CLÍNICA MIRØ MARBELLA

“My philosophy is to enhance each person’s natural beauty” Dr. Carlos San Martín

Clínica Miró has arrived in Marbella to offer a concept of aesthetic medicine based on respect for natural beauty, while guaranteeing quality and safety in its treatments. A full team of professionals headed by Isabel Santos Córdoba, the director of the centre, who together with Dr. Carlos San Martín, the medical director, will provide you with guidance to achieve natural results. Dr. Carlos San Martín, an expert in non-surgical facelifts, and laser and facial rejuvenation, with over 20 years of experience in aesthetic medicine, will explain some of the key elements of his work at Clínica Miró. Based on your extensive experience in the sector at the forefront of the most state-of-the-art methods, what is your philosophy? My philosophy is to enhance each person’s natural beauty without creating false expectations, through treatments in accord with the result expected by the patient, using quality products and the latest technology. Can you tell us about some of these technologies, and what guidelines to follow in your treatments? The Nordlys pulsed light laser by Ellipse is a leading technology used to treat dark spots, vascular lesions and other skin conditions on the face, neck and décolleté, leaving a uniform, luminous skin tone. Due to the large population of British, Dutch and Russian origin, typically of very fair complexion, and the continuous sun exposure here, this is a very popular treatment in Marbella. It can be carried out at any time of year, and thanks to technological advances, the number of sessions varies between 2 and 3, with incredible results. The fractional CO2 laser acts by encouraging

tissue regeneration, achieving a smoother, firmer skin texture. It is used to eliminate small lesions such as stretch marks, warts or scars, obtaining visible results from the first session.

to the chest, including eyelid lifts, always prioritising a natural look. As an expert in non-surgical facelifts and rejuvenation, could you explain what this consists of and how it is done at Clínica Miró? Dr. Carlos San Martín: It is a combination of different treatments, using equipment and innovative techniques in conjunction with fillers, Botox and tightening threads, among others. As one of the most popular treatments used for around 25 years, for which patients and circumstances would Botox be most appropriate? Taking into account its excellent results and the fact that it is the safest treatment in the world, it is best to start from the age of 30 to 35, as a preventive treatment. Among other things, it can correct frown lines, forehead creases, crow’s feet, upper-lip lines, neck wrinkles, even bruxism or a gummy smile. With such a wide range of of hyaluronic acid and fillers available, which are used at Clínica Miró and why? We use FDA-approved (the drug safety regulation agency), injectable, resorbable fillers, similar to what our own body produces. These materials are used for volume loss, lip augmentation, reduction of under-eye shadows, and even hand rejuvenation.

We can also remove any type of tattoo, or treat dark spots with the Q-Switch laser, with a very effective and practically painless technique. FDA-approved Soft-Lift HIFU Ultherapy, which generates and activates collagen, achieving a younger, fresher appearance from the forehead

Appreciating all this information, why choose Clínica Miró Marbella over other clinics? Dr. Carlos San Martín - A good question... Mainly because we offer the assurance of respecting health and safety requirements, in addition to using quality products and the most advanced technology.

LAUREN

BACALL By Ana Pavón

“ I think your whole life shows in your face and you should be proud of that””

etty Joan Perske, Lauren Bacall’s real name. She was born into a middle-class family on September 16th, 1924, in New York. She lived in the Bronx. Her parents divorced when she was 6 years old. At the age of 8, her father stopped visiting her and contributing to her support. His absence marked her personal and emotional relationships. As the only daughter of a divorced working woman, the actress spent her childhood away from home, first with her relatives, and then in a boarding school for young ladies. She was a good student and liked sports, but she dreamed of being a dancer and actress. Later she devoted all her energy to acting, and began taking on jobs as a model. Her beauty did not go unnoticed, and at the age of 18, she got a job as a photographic model for the magazine, Harper’s Bazaar. Her picture featured on the front cover in 1943 changed her life. It was this magazine that launched her into the world of cinema, as she was discovered thanks to the undisputed talent of Hawks’ wife, the elegant and intelligent Slim Keith, who recommended Bacall to her husband for his new film, after seeing her on the cover. Hawks and his wife were so compatible, and such was his trust in her criteria that he followed her advice, and Bacall, at the age of 19, landed the role of leading lady (Marie “Slim” Browning) in “To Have and Have Not” (Ernest Hemingway’s novel). Her co-star was Humphrey Bogart, 25 years her senior. A year later, after the immediate attraction that existed between them, a chemistry that went beyond the screen, they married in May 1945. Two children were born from their marriage: Stephen Humphrey and Leslie. ‘Slim’, as they called her, had an elegant appearance, a deep voice and a penetrating look that came from trying to hide her nerves, which enhanced her photogenic magnetism and made her appear an ambiguous, interesting woman, characteristics which would bring her great success in her film career. “The Big Sleep” (1946), “Dark Passage” and “Key Largo” are other titles in which she co-starred with Bogart. Lauren Bacall chose her films carefully, so her history in the cinema is relatively short. She did various genres: comedy, melodrama, black cinema... “Young Man with a Horn” was her most vindictive role. But she was not only good in dramatic roles and black cinema, she also adapted very well to comedy in “How to Marry a Millionaire” (1953), in which she delivered a very good performance, co-starring with Marilyn Monroe and Betty Grable. It is a movie I recommend, as well as “To Have and Have Not”. Another comedy she starred in was “Designing Woman” (1957), with Gregory Peck. The fifties were very productive for her, appearing in several films: “Woman’s World” (1954), “The Cobweb”, “Written on the Wind” and “Blood Alley”... The success and happiness in her professional and personal life were cut short with the death of the “Casablanca” star. His death shattered the actress, keeping her away from the big screen for several years. Her return to the cinema took place in an amusing film “Sex and the Single Girl” (1964). Then came the highly successful titles of the sixties: “Harper” (1964) with Paul Newman, and “Shock Treatment” (1964). She got married again, to the actor Jason Robards, and they had a son called Sam. Their marriage lasted 8 years. In the seventies, she settled in her home city, New York, The Big Apple, and had John Lennon as a neighbour. During this time, new titles such as “Murder on the Orient Express” (1974), “The Shootist” (1976), “The Fan”, “Misery” and “Prêtâ-Porter”, by Robert Altman, are noteworthy. At the age of 75 , she starred in the film “Dogville” (2003), by Lars Von Trier, with the Australian actress, Nicole Kidman. Her last film, “The Forger”, was in 2012. She was nominated for an Oscar only once, in the category for Best Supporting Actress for her work in the film with Barbara Streisand, “The Mirror Has Two Faces.” However, the Oscar went to Juliette Binoche for “The English Patient.” In 2009 she was awarded an honorary Oscar. She said, “Oh my heavens, I can’t believe it! A man at last!” Lauren Bacall was a temperamental woman, as referenced in her memoirs by Tom Maschler, the British publisher. She died of a stroke in her home on August 12th, 2014. With her death, one of the last legends of classical Hollywood cinema disappeared.

INTERESTING FACTS BABY & BOGIE “He called her Baby, she called him Bogie” Lauren Bacall was one of the great legends of classical Hollywood cinema. Behind the image of a woman with a “strong, overwhelming personality” conveyed by her characters, hid a sensitive, insecure woman. Shortly after being widowed, Frank Sinatra proposed to her. She accepted, but when the engagement was leaked by the agent, Irving Lezer, Sinatra disappeared. She felt humiliated, and even left her home in California, returning to New York. On the big screen, she was known as “The Look”, or “Slim”. A woman of feline, defiant beauty and self-confidence. In reality, she was an easily enamoured, vulnerable, insecure woman, who was undervalued in her profession. “I think your whole life shows in your face and you should be proud of that” “You can’t start worrying about what’s going to happen. You get spastic enough worrying about what’s happening now ” “I am essentially a loner” “Find me a man who’s interesting enough to have dinner with, and I’ll be happy” “Imagination is the highest kite one can fly” “A woman isn’t complete without a man. But where do you find a man - a real man - these days?” “You don’t always win your battles, but it’s good to know you fought”

LAUREN

“Una mujer no está completa sin un hombre. ohn D. Rockefeller came to be the wealthiest man in the world. Nicknamed “the oil king”, he was a shrewd businessman who surpassed the milestone of creating the first monopoly in history, amassing a huge fortune which his family still administers to the present day. John Davison Rockefeller was born in Richford (New York) in 1839. His mother Eliza, of Scotch-Irish ancestry, was a very religious woman, and devoted to her children. It is said that John inherited his mother’s determination and perseverance and applied it to business, where he had more success than anyone. From a very early age, John began to show a keen interest in the financial world. As a child, he painted stones and sold them to his classmates. The money he earned from this was put in a blue jar, which years later he would call “my first safe”. In this way he managed to save a small fortune of $50, which he lent shortly after to a friend of his father’s, at an interest rate of 7%. With this simple act, Rockefeller discovered the immense possibilities of the business world and coined his first phrase: “Don’t work for money, let money work for you.” From that moment on, all his earnings were accounted for in a small notebook he called “Ledger A”. Without knowing it, he was laying the foundations of a great empire. THE OIL BUSINESS At the age of 16, John had already become an accountant, and worked from dawn till dusk in a grain trading company. He earned the significant figure of $600 a year, and decided to ask for a pay rise of $200. As it was not granted, he left the company and decided to set up his own business. The firm, Clark & Rockefeller, earned $4,000 in its first year and $16,000 in the second, but Rockefeller’s astute business sense and innate intelligence led him to focus on oil, understanding that it would soon become the main source of energy on the planet. In 1862, Rockefeller invested his savings in building his first refinery in Cleveland, and soon after, he began buying up others. The American Civil War was the boost he needed in his business. The tycoon extracted the oil, refined it, and transported it. In 1870, he created Standard Oil Company and soon began to refine a quarter of the country’s oil production. He pulled off quite a coup when he bought 22 of the 25 Cleveland refineries, thanks to his competitors either selling him their refineries or partnering with him. Eight years later, he already controlled 90% of the country’s refineries. With the creation of the Standard Oil Trust, the business expanded to the point of controlling a large part of the world’s oil, which would make him the richest man on the planet. A UNIQUE PERSONALITY It is said that Rockefeller would read his bible every morning and night, and he was very thrifty. He married Laura Celestia Spelman, a New York teacher, with whom he had four daughters, Elizabeth, Alice, Alta and Edith, and a son, John D., who inherited his entire empire. They lived in New York, in a luxurious nine-story building, known to be an absolutely inaccessible stronghold. Tremendously intelligent, Rockefeller was a firm believer in the need to surround oneself with the best businessmen in order to succeed. For the tycoon, that was the first step that led him to become the man with the most economic power on the planet. At the peak of his empire, the American Government determined that it was a monopoly, forcing its dissolution. Although Rockefeller appealed,

“Don’t work for money, let money

work for you”

buying himself some time, he was eventually forced to break up his huge business into 37 corporations, although he retained 30% of his shares, while his family took over the rest, so his fortune did not suffer. PHILANTHROPIC WORK He was just over 50 years old, and despite being the richest man in the world, he began to suffer health problems. In 1911, he resigned from the presidency of his empire and moved to his home in Florida, devoting himself to his philanthropic work. He donated more than $550 million to charities, and left behind an important cultural legacy which included the University of Chicago, the Rockefeller University in New York, the Lincoln Center and various foundations focused on education, scientific research and medicine, in addition to the Rockefeller Center, which he did not see finished, because he died shortly before its inauguration, in 1937. He was buried in Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland, his home city that witnessed the growth of his gigantic empire.

ICE SKATING At the foot of Rockefeller Center’s Christmas tree we can find another one of the greatest attractions of the Big Apple, the most classical and known ice rinks of the city, the so-called Ice Rink. Thousands of tourists and New Yorkers slide in this skating rink, that has been the setting for many movies. Although it is not the only place to enjoy this winter activity. Last but not least, in the heart of Manhattan, next to Central Park, a beautiful ice rink can be found, Wollman Rink. NEW YORK F

Bundle up with loved ones by the fire (instead of conventional heating, save energy and make use of your chimney!). HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF THIS HOLIDAY SEASON AND CELEBRATE THE FESTIVITIES IN A HEALTHY, CONSCIOUS AND SUSTAINABLE FASHION. “SHOP AND EAT LOCALLY AND IN SEASON”. There are several hidden fruit and vegetable markets in the centre of Marbella and San Pedro where the produce is truly ‘organic’, coming straight from the countryside. By shopping in these local independent markets often run by families from generation to generation we also do our part in helping support the local economy and promote sustainable farm-to-table family businesses, rather than shopping in big industrial supermarket chains. These local markets have no packaging which also helps reduce our plastic consumption, you can handpick your fresh goods of choice and take them away in your own recyclable bags. Below are some examples of healthy local produce that are in season this winter. By consuming these items we are reducing our carbon footprint, eliminating the transport of importing products from abroad, and we help strengthen our local community and environment: Chestnuts, Olives, Almonds and Walnuts, Dates, Cherimoyas, Honey Figs, Roasted Sweet Potatoes, Mushrooms and Pumpkin.

KEEPING ACTIVE AND HEALTHY IN WINTER IS NECESSARY TO BALANCE ALL THE EXCESSES OF THE FESTIVE SEASON. We are fortunate to be surrounded by such marvellous nature from the unspoilt white beaches of Tarifa to the empowering mountain ranges along the coast. Mountain hikes are wonderful day plans for families and groups of friends. The Refugio de Juanar on the road to Coin is a shorter version of hiking up La Concha, about a one-hour hike and offers spectacular panoramic views from the cross at the top of the mountain. We have organised a movement called Sundays for Sunsets where each Sunday we meet at a specific point at the Concha Basin. We meditate and practice sun-gazing. Each Sunday is unique with guest visitors leading the meditation, sound healing, drums and chanting. Skiing in the Sierra is a great luxury we have, located only 2.5 hours away. One can drive up for lunch, hit the slopes, enjoy the après ski, and be back in time for dinner on the coast. El Lodge boutique hotel was voted number 7 of 15 of the top ski luxury lodges by CNN traveller designed by Andrew Martin. The pumpkin soup at El Lodge is by far the best I have ever had!

LOCALLY WE HAVE SEVERAL PLACES WHERE WE CAN ENJOY HEALTHY OPTIONS FOR DINING (VEGAN AND VEGETARIAN PRIMARILY. Hustle n’ Flow in San Pedro have delicious acai bowls, the speciality is the blue bowl made with the superfood, spirulina! Also their Matcha with almond-rice milk, topped with nutmeg and cinnamon is one of the best I have had. Their charcoal shots are also wonderfully cleansing. Organic has a wide variety of scrumptious salads to choose from along with the beautifully decorated raw vegan cakes, cookies and breads! Try their vanilla nut milk smoothie made in-house by pressing the almonds, and sweetened with dates.

HEALTHY GIFT:

ideas

Attempting to minimise unnecessary consumption and waste and reduce our carbon footprint for this season of extravagant and excessive gift-giving, offering instead experiences which are the new luxury! Experiences are much more gratifying; trips and activities, especially when they are shared with loved ones and when they involve positive actions for the environment are most fulfilling and rewarding.

Rachel’s Eco Love is the ideal location for ladies’ luncheons, a little oasis of turquoise blues and pretty dishes. My favourite is their raw vegan pumpkin pie, ideal for this holiday season and their gluten-free, sugar-free peanut butter cookies! Also their matcha, slightly stronger than others I have had, with coconut or almond milk is the perfect punch of energy to be enjoyed in a most picturesque setting. For juices, Celicioso is the ideal spot for an energy boost. Try the suicide shot, a series of 3 shots ranging from turmeric, chili and ginger that will help clean the system and strengthen the immune system! The avocado burgers are also fabulous! At both Celicioso and Rachel’s, 1 euro from each bill is donated to the Local Triple A Foundation. The newly-opened Bjuice offers wonder-

ful vegan brunches on Sunday and has a variety of cold pressed juices, along with Coldpressed in Nueva Andalucía, whose acai bowls with their homemade granola are said to be one of the best in town. The opening of Breathe last year was a great success, it strives to be carbon-free, it is seen as a green oasis with over 180 plants, an underground well and geothermal heating and cooling devices. They have joined carbon-free diners in a global initiative which offers diners to plant a fruit tree with their bill. The Sea Grill Salad Buffet at the Puente Romano Resort offers a plethora of vegan and vegetarian salads, and a new dessert area with gluten and sugar-free delicacies! The Puente Romano resort has hosted several environmental events this year and is a leader in helping bring the local community together for conscious actions.

• RONDA LA ORGANIC an experiential sustainable and gastronomic experience based on olive oil tourism. • PAMPERING AND CARING FOR ONE’S HEALTH! In San Pedro the Hammam El Pacha is a hidden gem ideal for pampering oneself, it offers treatments for men and women separately and for groups. • The SIX SENSES SPA at the Puente Romano Resort has been nominated the best spa in town, a true wellness break focused on natural healing with their large wet area offering all sorts of hydrotherapy options and customised treatments. A space to refresh the mind and body. • The first centre for BIKRAM YOGA CENTER opened this year in La Campana, from the Bikram school of Spain Organization. • PLANTING TREES this is a gift we can give to family and friends and an activity especially children would enjoy. They can name their tree and follow its growth over the coming years. Planting trees is one of the most beneficial actions we can do for the environment. They absorb CO2, removing it from the air and storing it, while releasing oxygen.

EXCLUSIVE PEOPLE

ROTARY CLUB MARBELLA

Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 30 years. Our goal of ridding the world of this disease is closer than ever.As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, we’ve reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent since our first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979. We’ve helped immunise more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries. So far, Rotary has contributed more than $1.8 billion toward eradicating the disease worldwide. Today, polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan. But it’s crucial to continue working to keep other countries polio-free. If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyse as many as 200,000 children each year. Explore the history of Rotary and polio eradication: · $3 average cost to fully protect a child against polio · 430million children in total vaccinated in 39 countries in 2017 · $ 100million cost to conduct polio surveillance worldwid.

The Rotary Foundation transforms your gifts into service projects that change lives both close to home and around the world. Since it was founded more than 100 years ago, the Foundation has spent more than $4 billion on life-changing, sustainable projects. With your help, we can make lives better in your community and around the world. The mission of The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty. What impact can one donation have? For as little as 60 cents, a child can be protected from polio. $50 can provide clean water to help fight waterborne illness. $500 can launch an antibullying campaign and create a safe environment for children. www.endpolio.org. Poliomyelitis is a highly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5.

Most know it as poliovirus. The virus is spread person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can attack the nervous system, and in some instances, lead to paralysis. Although there is no cure, there is a safe and effective vaccine – one which Rotary and our partners use to immunize over 2.5 billion children worldwide. Out partners the fight end polio is led by Global Polio Eradication Intiative GPEI , which includes Rotary , UNICEF, The U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CDC . The World Health Organisation WHO, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Governments of the world , with the support of many others around the globe. For International Polio Day, Rotary Club Marbella we organised Charity Walk for Polio on Paseo Martimo de Marbella and projecting END POLIO on the tower of Hotel Puente Romano last year where we have our head quoter since 1979. We collect fond for Polio Plus project at our Anniversary Dinner in Sea Grill Puente Romano. Also this year we had a stand of End Polio in Orange square of Old Town Marbella in front of the Cristo del Amor Chapel where Rotary Club

She completed her secondary education in the field of Art in technical high school with a successful traineeship in 2002. She graduated from university in 2005, majoring in graphic design and started painting professionally from 2000. Since 2012, she is more concentrated on erotic painting and nude style. Soozan had her first international exhibition in New York in 2013. She has been invited as a VIP guest to some of the most important art events and exhibitions in New York as well as group exhibitions in Europe and America. She had a successful and profitable experience working with different promotional institutions throughout the world. In her paintings, the inspiration comes

from her imagination and the art of photography which helped her to create what goes on in her mind. The paintings are not just about expressing sexual issues but sometimes expressing a simple matter of life in the form of naked art. The purpose of the naked style “Soul House” collection, is to break the taboo and to create better communication between humans and their naked bodies. Also to break the shame that barriers understanding and seeing the natural beauty of the human body in the true sense. There is no united message between the artworks. Each painting has its own meaning. Therefore, the viewer based on his/ her own perception and understanding will experience the emotion and the connection between him/her and the artwork. The vernissage of “EROTIKA” happened on Thursday, November 14th. The opening party came along with an erotic performance by a professional actress/dancer.
