EDITORIAL Spain’s “State of Alarm” might now be over, but many people and businesses are still suffering the consequences, and there remains considerable trepidation about how the so-called “New Normal” will pan out. Our hearts also, of course, share the pain of those who have been most profoundly and tragically affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Nevertheless, it would not be insensitive to breathe a collective sigh of relief – for those in the business world who had tirelessly built-up their companies and had to cope through a troubled time, not knowing what would result from this exceptional economic experience – and cautiously declare: “We’re back!” The global community in general is back, with the most damaging effects of the pandemic seemingly under control after three months of uncertainty and upheaval. The Costa del Sol is back, once again able to welcome international visitors and returning expat residents, and re-opening for business and play. And Home & Lifestyle Magazine is back, having cancelled the May-June issue but now ready to join the local décor and design, property and leisure world in a concerted effort to return to some semblance of normality. If there is one thing that hasn’t changed since March, it is that southern Spain still offers one of the world’s most enviable lifestyles – and this is showcased in all its splendour in summer. We still face an unsettled and complex summer this year, certainly, but one during which we can – with our family, friends and colleagues – revisit (and perhaps even transform) our personal and professional priorities. The many weeks of confinement will have given most of us an unexpected opportunity to experience and appreciate our homes more intensely, and understand any shortcomings or aspects that need to be revitalised. Perhaps our temporary work spaces have proved to be inadequate, especially if we plan to continue working from home. Maybe our kitchens have not been able to cope with our new-found enthusiasm for culinary creativity. Or possibly we have realised that our living areas need a major revamp to restore their optimum comfort and convenience. Whatever the scope of your newly tweaked or rediscovered needs and preferences, we hope that the following pages highlighting latest home decoration ideas, trends and concepts – as well as many of the other lifestyle and cultural joys of living in southern Spain – will provide inspiration as we all embrace the prospects of a more positive second half of 2020. Welcome back!

EMBRACING the Great Outdoors
Now we are fully into the throes of summer – and perhaps hanging out at your local beach is not your place of preference this year – make your own outdoor space one to be envied. Whether you have a small terrace or a garden, your outdoor furniture should be just as inviting as the furniture you have indoors. After all, why stop with your design skills at the patio door! With new innovations in materials that are not only beautiful but weather-resistant (and therefore highly durable), and a plethora of gorgeous accessories that have surged into the marketplace, there are plenty of options to choose from to make this area of your home a veritable oasis.

COOKING Al Fresco
Cooking doesn’t have to be restricted to just inside the home – you can be enjoying the outdoors with your friends and family and cooking at the same time! There are many options to choose from when cooking outside, from standard barbecues and innovative hi-tech grills to customised outdoor kitchens. Depending on space and budget, there’s something for everyone, so there’s no need to be stuck inside cooking this summer, when you can be outside where all the action is happening.

LUSH LOUNGING Often referred to as the beating heart of the home, your living room is arguably the one area that represents your style most graphically to people visiting your inner sanctum. Choose well-proportioned furniture that allows ample space to move around the room, with comfortable seating and table space to place drinks, vases or table lamps. Make the room feel inviting with cushions and poufs, while rugs are always a great way to add a focal point to the room or to simply give the space a cosy ambience.

PALMERAS PROPERTY DEVELOPMENT (PPD) is a real estate development brand pushing the boundaries of innovation and creativity in the development of luxury villas in South of Spain. Our main objective is to adapt and maximise interior and exterior spaces with local surroundings in order to take advantage of everything that the property has to offer. We strive to achieve something unique for every villa in order to create the perfect combination for inside-outside living. By integrating and combining the exterior with the interior of the villa and simultaneously merging modern design with the elegance of Andalusia we hope to accomplish this goal for every villa. With a carefully selected team of professionals from the architectural & building stages to the final finishing touches of interior design, we emphasize architectural details and quality finishes rather than mainstream design. Over the past years, we have built up strong ties with dynamic and dedicated professionals with the goal of creating the villa of your dreams.

Catellani & Smith’s Fil de Fer is made up of woven aluminium wire which is lit on the inside by tiny bulbs. It was developed more than two decades ago for a special commission that was never used, so the designer, Enzo Catellani, continued to work on it as it was a creation very close to his heart. WALL LIGHTING Wall lamps or sconces are often overlooked when it comes to choosing a lighting solution for a room. Unless there is already a wall light installation, it can seem to some people quite a mission to get wall lights installed due to the wiring issue. In actual fact, wall sconces are a great way to save on space as they don’t occupy a table or floor area. Their position should be properly thought-out, depending on how you are going to use the light and whether it is possible for cabling to reach where you would like to install your lamp.

COOKING UP
Some Inspiration Key features of modern kitchens include well thought-out cabinetry, open shelving for easy access (with the odd trailing plant to add a homely feel), a mix of different natural materials such as wood and stoneware, and intelligent appliances that make the cooking experience more efficient and thus a more pleasurable experience. Updating your kitchen doesn’t have to clean out your bank account: upgrading your appliances, cabinetry or faucets, for example, can make a huge difference to the look of your kitchen. Also, don’t be afraid to make it cosy with a painting or chandelier to provide a more personal touch and a design focal point.

carpets
Rugs are multi-talented little objects! They bring warmth and cosiness to a room with softness underfoot, offer colour, texture and pattern, dampen down noise and echo, and pull a room together aesthetically. Whether your rug is placed beside the bed, under a dining table or in the middle of your living room, it can be quite transformative for a living space.
These circular works of fantastical art can be enjoyed in the atrium of the Mondrian Doha Hotel in Qatar (shown here) where they are a feast for the eyes, adding depth and richness to the space. Designed by Dutch designer Marcel Wanders, the carpets offer a melange of mindblowing patterns, textures and colours (www.marcelwanders.com).

HUNG UP
On Curtains
Curtains provide the finishing touches to a room. They can add softness, warmth, luxuriousness and even drama. Hanging curtains just below ceiling level instead of just above the window makes the room feel taller than it really is, giving a sense of space. There are many different materials to choose from, and this all depends on the style of the room and how much natural light you want to enter. Sheers give a delicate design touch to a window and, if they have decorative patterns cut out of the material, light filters through them magically. For heavier curtains, patterned designs make a great statement but be sure to tiein a colour from the curtain fabric that also features in the upholstery of your chairs or sofas – to give a coordinated aesthetic. If you want a more dramatic or masculine look, dark plains are always a good idea.

YOUR SOFA’S Best Friends
Cushions can elevate the look of your sofa at very little cost and minimum effort. If you have a plain neutral-coloured sofa, cushions add a pop of colour and texture, making the room instantly more inviting and carefully thought-out. A sofa is not properly dressed without a few cushions, and you don’t have to be an interior designer to make a real difference to your living room.

Crestron Spending more time at home the past few months has emphasised just how important it is to create a cosy, convenient and “connected” environment. Even for those people no longer having to work remotely, or homeschool their children, maintaining effective connectivity is essential. For an increasing number of homeowners, this means staying abreast of latest trends in home automation – covering both audio-visual set-ups and other key domestic appliances. Lutron Connect, for example, is compatible with Google Home, Amazon Echo and Apple Home Kit. At a hardware level, the Lutron’s keypads and Palladiom curtains are exceptional, with both proving to be extremely popular among those seeking the ultimate in domotics. The Palladiom shading system incorporates innovative technology and quiet performance, enhancing natural light with luxurious control elements. Another interesting new development (available on the Costa del Sol from 1 July) is Crestron Home. The aim of this interface is to bring the home to life – inviting, comfortable, entertaining and secure – with smart home technology that is intuitive, simple and attractive, and instantly responsive to touch or the sound of your voice. Meanwhile, Bang & Olufsen – always at the forefront of state-of-art home sound systems – provide excellent compatibility with Google Home, while their stunning new ranges include the Beovision Harmony 88-inch TV. The TV comes with the 2020 OLED 8K display from LG Electronics optimised for Bang & Olufsen, which allows for the full cinematic experience. Its 8K resolution, delivering four times more detail than 4K TV and 16 times more than HDTV, is designed to “deliver stunning picture quality, upgraded performance and artificial intelligence-enabled features that bring movies and sports to life like never before imagined”. With a pre-installed three-channel sound system and built-in dual subwoofer, the TV is compatible with Bang & Olufsen’s speaker program, allowing users to connect up to eight wireless Beolab speakers for 7.1 surround sound. All sources can be controlled with the Beoremote One – a remote that has been luxuriously crafted from a single piece of aluminium. Lutron, Crestron and Bang & Olufsen are available from Illusion in Urb. Guadalcántara, San Pedro de Alcántara (www.e-illusion.es).

WALLS Wallpaper is back with vengeance and, with so many designs, it can be overwhelming knowing where to start. If you are going for a statement wall, tie-in the colours of the room with the colours in the wallpaper to keep the look coordinated and relaxing. A large room can take a big design on one wall, but if the space is restricted avoid large patterns. Wallpapers can add a focal point, depth and texture to a room – and have a great impact on the space. Here are some ideas‌ HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Organisation
A beautiful home is always a tidy one, and this can only be achieved with good storage and organisational systems to minimise clutter. Keeping your floors clear gives a sense of space and tranquillity. Wall shelving and hooks are an excellent way to free-up floor space. The bedroom is usually a good place to start when it comes to storage solutions, as an organised room puts your mind into a state of relaxation and helps towards a great night’s sleep. 120

OUR BLOOMS Spring sprung and now the summer is well and truly here! Summer is a time when we throw open our doors and windows and embrace outdoor beauty. Bringing natural beauty into the home is also a wonderful way to add freshness and serenity to a room. If you have flowers with large blooms, consider a vase with a tapered-neck so that it holds the flowers in place, supporting them at the top of the stem and preventing them from breaking. Vases can be works-of-art all by themselves, so don’t be scared to go bold – when they are not holding flowers, they can serve as an ornamental piece.

THE BIG FLOWER FIGHT ON NETFLIX Exclusive interview with contestant Eoghan Riordan Fernandez

JULY & AUGUST 2020
The Big Flower Fight HL69.indd 132
25/6/20 17:15
British competition show The Big Flower Fight premiered in May this year on Netflix, transporting viewers into eight episodes of mind-blowing floral creativity that has never been seen before. Contestants from all walks of life are challenged to create gigantic floral structures that quite literally serve as veritable works of art – each and every one. From “Enormous Insects” to “Fabulous Floral Fashion”, not only is the viewer treated to the unbounding creativity of the contestants’ work, but the show also keeps you on the edge of your seat – making you wonder if they are going to meet the brief, build the installation without any hiccups and complete the task within the allocated time. Hold on to your hats, Netflix binge watchers… The Big Flower Fight is here to suck you in! Even though you have lived in Ireland all your life, you have a strong Spanish heritage due to your mother being from Bilbao. We know you studied in Granada, have siblings living in Málaga and regularly visit Spain, attending various conventions around the peninsula, so have you ever considered moving here yourself? Yes, I’d love to move over to Spain and I speak Spanish fluently. I’ve thought about it many times but I’m separated and have children here in Ireland, so I don’t feel I can leave here for the time being as I want to be with my kids. How did you become involved in the Netflix competition show The Big Flower Fight? My friend Hannah was informed about the show and she suggested that I apply, so I decided to give it a go and fill in the application form. The show’s production company got back to me straight away, and that was really it. I had to then find a teammate so I asked an old college friend, Declan, with whom since university I had collaborated on various projects. I felt our skills complemented each other’s, making us a good team for the show. Did the contestants become close during the show and have you kept in touch with any of them since the competition took place? We did all get quite close during the show as we were all going through the same stresses and strains, so we bonded really well. Since the show we have a WhatsApp group where we keep in touch, but we all live quite far away from each other so we haven’t yet managed to meet up.
Had you ever made flower sculptures before on this kind of scale? Not really, no. I had created several large vertical gardens but nothing like this so it was really a fantastic challenge in every way. How competitive are you? Were you in the competition solely to win or was there an element of just being happy to be part of the whole experience? When we first went into the competition, we were quite in awe of the talent of some of the contestants, but we quickly got into it and realised it was anyone’s call. We obviously wanted to win but the whole experience was amazing from start to finish and we are so pleased we were given the opportunity. When you were knocked-out of the competition in the fifth round, making the “Magnificent Mobile”, how did you feel about the decision? We were totally gutted! Where other contestants had help from carpenters, etc., we carried out the whole construction ourselves, so I suppose we felt our hard work in that area was perhaps overlooked. However, the reality is we totally respected the judges’ decision and we understood that many other aspects of the installation had to be taken into consideration and, even though I thoroughly enjoyed making that particular installation, it just wasn’t our day that day. We assume being on a show like this must have had a huge impact on you. Has it changed anything about your life and your career moving forward? Yes, the experience was definitely life-changing. It’s not every day that someone gets the opportunity to be involved in something as big as that, so I’m very grateful to have been part of it. Going back home after weeks of filming in such an intense environment was really strange though. During filming we had no time for ourselves as it was full-on the whole time, so coming back home and being able to properly relax and have time for yourself was quite a weird sensation. I’d carried out some high-profile projects in the past but nothing like The Big Flower Fight. Since being on the show, I’d now be open to doing more television work as I really did enjoy it and I’d love to carry out more large installations. So, let’s see where the future leads… HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

MARBELLA COMES OUT OF LOCKDOWN with Renewed Optimism Article supplied by Atlas Group
134
JULY & AUGUST 2020
Atlas Column HL69.indd 134
25/6/20 17:16
Since May, Spain has been carefully returning to normality from one of Europe’s strictest lockdowns. Now that the country is able to welcome international tourism again, and the major airlines are resuming flights, visitors and second homeowners alike can return to Marbella and the wider Costa del Sol, bringing a much-needed return to normality. There is a renewed optimism here, as we see the opening of businesses, restaurants and shops. Quotations for property builds and renovations are coming in thick and fast, and architects and real estate agencies are experiencing an influx of enquiries again from those who put their plans to relocate to Spain on hold. There has been a renewed hunger to relocate or purchase that second home here on the Coast; and, with property viewings again able to take place and construction back in full swing, it is a promising outlook. If you are planning on buying, building or renovating a property in the Marbella area, there are some questions to consider in this post-lockdown property market. Will we see the same market crash experienced in 2008? This is a different situation to that of the 2008 crisis: the banks are in a strong position and the market is not over-saturated with properties, which were two leading causes of that crash. Many people have managed to save money during the pandemic and are looking with heightened interest to invest. Although many are predicting that there may be a cooling-off period, it is likely that the property market, particularly on the Costa del Sol, will recover quickly if we compare it to the recovery of the market just over 10 years ago. Is now a good time to get a great discount on a property or a plot? Many buyers have the expectation that they can ask for an aggressive discount but it is important to remember that, while the Costa del Sol may
be compromised, this is still a luxury property market with wealthy owners, and it is very possible that low offers will be rejected while developers and owners await the market to fully recover. How did the construction industry fair during lockdown? During the entire “State of Alarm here in Spain, construction was able to continue but there were two weeks in March when all sites had to close. Once reopened, strict measures were put into place to protect the health of the workers and ensure that work could continue in a safe and controlled manner. In the last couple of months, the industry has boomed again, with construction companies and architects alike receiving many enquiries and requests to quote for work. Has the lockdown changed what people are looking for in a property here in Spain? This extra time at home will most likely have an impact. The quarantine has been food for thought: perhaps people are now seeking a larger home with more space, one that offers entertainment facilities such as a cinema, gym and pool, and within a low-density environment. The forced nature of working from home these past few months has led many to consider the importance of a home office space too. The Costa del Sol has been a dream destination for many over the years, but the lockdown period has renewed their passion for the Spanish lifestyle even more. With our excellent work-life balance, natural environment, enviable weather and luxury lifestyle, it is likely that Marbella and the wider Costa del Sol will be one of the first areas in Spain to recover. IRISH WINNERS OF 2020 PRITZKER ARCHITECTURE PRIZE
Parnell Square Cultural Quarter, City Library (Dublin) – rendering courtesy of Grafton Architects
Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara have been selected as the Pritzker Prize Laureates for 2020. The official announcement was made by Tom Pritzker, chairman of The Hyatt Foundation, which sponsors the award – one of architecture’s most prestigious honours and often referred to as the Nobel Prize of architecture. Farrell and Shelley McNamara established Grafton Architects in 1978 in Dublin, where they continue to practise and reside. Over four decades, they have completed nearly 40 projects, in Ireland, the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Peru. The Pritzker Architecture Prize was founded in 1979 by the late Jay A.Pritzker and his wife, Cindy. Its purpose is “to honour annually a living architect or architects whose built work demonstrates a combination of those qualities of talent, vision and commitment, which has produced consistent and significant contributions to humanity and the built environment through the art of architecture”. Responding to the announcement, Farrell said, “Architecture could be described as one of the most complex and important cultural activities on the planet. To be an architect is an enormous privilege. To win this prize is a wonderful endorsement of our belief in architecture. “At the core of our practice is a real belief that architecture matters. It is a cultural spatial phenomenon that people invent.” Added McNamara, “Within the ethos of a practice such as ours, we have so often struggled to find space for the implementation of such values as humanism, craft, generosity and cultural connection with each place and context within which we work. It is therefore extremely gratifying that this recognition is bestowed upon us and our practice and upon the body of work we have managed to produce over a long number of years. It is also a wonderful recognition of the ambition and vision of the clients who commissioned us and enabled us to bring our buildings to fruition. “Architecture is a framework for human life. It anchors us and connects us to the world in a way which possibly no other space-making discipline can.” 136
The jury citation noted, “As architects and educators since the 1970s, Farrell and McNamara create spaces that are at once respectful and new, honouring history while demonstrating a mastery of the urban environment and craft of construction. Balancing strength and delicacy, and upholding a reverence of sitespecific contexts, their academic, civic and cultural institutions, as well as housing developments, result in modern and impactful works that never repeat or imitate, but are decidedly of their own architectural voice. “For their integrity in their approach to both their buildings, as well as the way they conduct their practice, their belief in collaboration, their generosity towards their colleagues, especially as evidenced in such events as the 2018 Venice Biennale, their unceasing commitment to excellence in architecture, their responsible attitude toward the environment, their ability to be cosmopolitan while embracing the uniqueness of each place in which they work, for all these reasons and more, Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara are awarded the 2020 Pritzker Architecture Prize. According to Pritzker, “The collaboration between Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara represents a veritable interconnectedness between equal counterparts. They demonstrate incredible strength in their architecture, show deep relation to the local situation in all regards, establish different responses to each commission while maintaining the honesty of their work, and exceed the requirements of the field through responsibility and community.” Justice Stephen Breyer, the jury chair, said Farrell and McNamara had mastered proportion to maintain a human scale and achieve intimate environments within tall and vast buildings. “They have tried, with considerable success, to help us all overcome what is likely to evermore become a serious human problem. Namely, how do we build housing and workplaces in a world with over half of its population dwelling in urban environments, and many of them who cannot afford luxury?”

CONTAINING With Containers By Alia Babapulle

JULY & AUGUST 2020
Gardens HL69.indd 138
25/6/20 17:20
Whenever possible, choose a container whose material, colour and shape blend with the décor and show-off the individual plant or group at its best. The choice is really huge, both in style and material used, allowing a range of rustic to ultra modern. Unlikely household objects, such as old watering cans, birdcages, kettles, urns and even old cooking utensils can, with ingenuity, be used as striking plant holders. Old painted tyres which have been hung along a wall have also been used, and they look very nice indeed. Make sure that there is adequate drainage from the bottom. Actually, it is a good idea to use your imagination and recycle old items from around the home to house your plants, and it also helps the environment. I took an old colander, lined it with moss, put it onto a wide enough terracotta base for excess water to drain out and planted it with Lobelia – only that. It looks pretty with the shiny container and all the cascading bright blue, dainty Lobelia. An old wheelbarrow painted in a bright colour can be used perfectly for a dramatic mixture of flowering plants. If you do that, plant some ficus behind it as a perfect foil and also to give height. Always be careful with drainage with whichever type of container you are using. Hanging baskets on a terrace are so pretty but they can also be used for growing indoor plants. If you do use them for that purpose, make sure the flooring will take water splashes. Arching fern fronds and cascading foliage plants lend themselves perfectly to a hanging basket. Vary the planting during the year so as to take advantage of seasonal displays. You can make temporary arrangements by planting up a basket with different pot plants but they will need replanting every year. Permanently planted baskets are easier to manage, especially if devoted to one particular type of plant. Remember that a hanging basket is heavy so make sure the fixed point is strong enough to take the weight when it is fully watered; you don’t want it crashing down suddenly!
If you have an old terrarium, or have just bought a new one, they are perfect for having a beautiful arrangement of plants, if space is at a premium. Any slow-growing ornamental plant which needs a humid atmosphere thrives in a terrarium. Do not use flowering plants because they will rot. You can build one into a window to house a lush amount of larger plants or put one onto a sturdy support in a corner of a terrace. They look very dramatic, especially if you can incorporate some mood lighting for the evening. Talking about lighting, we all know how a garden, terrace or home looks so much better with good lighting. With plants, remember not to put the lights too close – otherwise over time the plant will burn. I have seen this happen many times unfortunately, and when I have told the owner to move them the answer inevitably has been: “I wanted to make more drama.” You can have drama in a garden of course – just don’t burn the plants! If you have a modern home, using lighting in a more rigid pattern will keep the modern look going. If your home is not ultra-modern, avoiding placing the lights in straight lines will be better for the look. Remember, I am always here to help you with any questions you may have, and I do interior and exterior designs incorporating everything I have been writing about over the years. So, the sky’s the limit with containers. Make use of all you might have first, instead of getting new ones. You’ll be surprised at what a bit of ingenuity can do. Ask your garden centre for advice for the plants; they will help you with pleasure. Have fun! Alia Babapulle Interior and Exterior Designer Tel. Traditional life is at the core of the philosophy behind Village Verde, the new development by Sotogrande S.A. It is located in the heart of Sotogrande, just a few metres away from La Reserva Club, the “most exclusive residential and leisure club in Europe”. Environmental protection, sustainability, community and a world of comfort and services have been created for residents. The new Village Verde development on the edge of the La Reserva Club Sotogrande community is an innovative development that re-imagines the traditional concept of a village and brings it up to date. The contemporary two, three and four-bedroom apartments, plus fourbedroom penthouses, offer the ultimate in modern open-plan living. They are flooded with light and boast incredible dual aspect or wrap-around terraces to enjoy the warm Spanish sun. With a total area of between 180 and 520 square metres, these generously proportioned apartments include underfloor heating and Aerotherm air-conditioning systems, as well as the latest Italian bathroom fittings and luxury-branded kitchens. The modern, sleek interiors blend seamlessly into the wonderful terraces, perfect for al fresco dining and relaxation. Village Verde is being built using sustainable construction methods and will have BREEAM certification: that is, a sustainability assessment offering certification for projects which provide a more sustainable environment enhancing the well-being of the people who live and work in them – and help protect natural resources. The project will also be certified by WELL, the premier standard for buildings, interior spaces and communities seeking to implement, validate and measure features that support and advance human health and wellness.
Village Verde’s eco-friendly properties, which flood the interiors with light thanks to large windows and sliding doors, as well as large terraces to enjoy the sunshine, definitely tick the box for air and light. Maintaining and embracing the stunning natural environment around Village Verde has been key in the development, and facilities such as playgrounds, running tracks, bike trails and outdoor fitness areas encourage residents to get out into the fresh air, enjoy nature and be active. The open-plan living spaces, with the aforementioned underfloor heating and Aerotherm air-conditioning, ensure comfort throughout the year. The development will feature renewable energy sources to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and all the properties are built to comply with the highest energy efficiency standards and the latest home automation systems. As sport is so central to the Sotogrande lifestyle, they have also built a number of great facilities for getting active at Village Verde. There will be tennis courts and a croquet lawn, as well as bike trails, a jogging route, a green pedestrian promenade and an outdoor gym to explore the beautiful countryside setting. The development is built around the Village Centre, a space for the community to come together. It features incredible facilities for fitness and relaxation, including an outdoor pool, a kids’ pool, a beach sandy pool area and a playground area for children. villageverde.residencial@sotogrande.com (sales team) Tel (+34) 856 560 922 www.villageverdesotogrande.com HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

How the Quarantine has Affected
INTERIOR DESIGN Interview with Creative Director Olivia O
Photos by: Coco Rubio
How are you helping clients make their homes more comfortable and functional following the official quarantine period? More than ever, people are looking into investing in their residences. The post-COVID client will be more attuned to flaws in their homes after taking a closer look at them while staying at home. Lately, we have received many new interior and exterior design enquiries from clients who want to transform their living spaces into functional sanctuaries during these uncertain times. What are your top tips for giving new life to the patio and pool area? Without a doubt, the most important part of your backyard escape is having a comfortable yet stylish place that serves multiple purposes. During the summer months, your garden becomes part of your living area, so it’s important to have an outdoor lounge for barbecues, gatherings, cocktail party evenings, etc. Bespoke exterior furniture is very well invested money to get the most out of your patio. You can easily create a variety of separate areas for lounging, sunbathing or dining with different types of seating options, from sturdy chairs gathered around an outdoor dining table to a hammock for lazy summer days – or round poufs to pull out when having friends over. We love keeping the theme cohesive by using natural colours mixed with palm tree greens and blue sea turquoise, for a serene, ocean-inspired look. To spice things up you can always add details in zingy yellow and orange. The pool area is equally important. It’s a good idea to invest in a pergola or 144
put up a sail to provide shade for those hot summer days. Create your own little beach club vibe at home by getting some nice comfortable sunbeds and why not even a cabana to use as the summer unfolds. What are the main aspects people need to take into account when creating a designated home office? A specific workspace ensures that you work efficiently from home, but this can become demotivating and gloomy, so choose a space that has plenty of natural light – no matter how big or small the designated area is. A room with views of nature works best, making the space a personal sanctuary rather than a place for professional toil. Nothing kills productivity like cramped up spaces. So, even if you have a small desk, make sure to de-clutter it and focus on ways you can make your space as inspiring as possible. “The dogsole™“ – a new trend alert? Bearing in mind the heightened empathy for our four-legged friends, I designed this dogbed-console to ensure they have their own little space, since they’ve been instrumental in my own navigation through this period. “The dogsole™” is bespoke-made and can match any interior style-up on request. LUXURY AND SUSTAINABILITY in the Foothills of Marbella’s Mountains A home in the sun: it means a lot more now than it did at the beginning of 2020. Apart from a dream come true for many people, owning a home in the sun now also means having a bolt-hole where they can lockdown in safety and luxury in case of another pandemic, if we are unfortunate enough to have another. And if not... nothing lost. Our recent period of forced introspection has made most of us think of the really important things in life, and somewhere close to the top of that list comes a home where we can relax, reflect and recharge body and soul. And have a lot of fun doing it. Coming soon from the award-winning development company BRIGHT is Vista Lago Residences, a place where you will be able to do just that. This new landmark project of 18 design-led, sustainable villas is located on the highest villa plot on the mountainside estate of Real de La Quinta, a 200-hectare residential country club in the foothills of the Sierra de las Nieves mountain range overlooking Marbella. The setting is unique, with Marbella’s iconic La Concha mountain on one side and the exclusive La Zagaleta Country Club & Golf estate on the other, bordering a UNESCO biosphere reserve and yet just a 15-minute drive from Marbella. Rarely do you come across a project with state-of-the-art architecture, world-class design, dream location and unbeatable views – and this really is the holy grail of views. One of the architects involved in designing Real de la Quinta, Joseph Ginther, said this about it: “From where we are you can see three countries and two continents... That’s just an astounding place to be – you don’t find sites like that!” 146
The jewel in the crown of Real de La Quinta will be the largest artificial lake on the Costa del Sol, where watersports such as kayaking and paddleboarding can be enjoyed. There will also be an executive golf course and academy, a chiringuito bar beside the lake, a gourmet restaurant, a small selection of shops, a boutique hotel with spa, an equestrian centre and tennis and pádel courts. But Vista Lago Residences offers a lot more than a five-star lifestyle and magnificent views. It also offers the priceless commodities of space in abundance and clean air in beautiful natural surroundings. The amenities at Real de La Quinta combined with the facilities of each individual villa – gym, private pool and garden, large terraces, entertainment rooms and offices – mean that owners would never need to leave the resort unless they wanted to. It’s an oasis, a true haven where comfort and quality of life is assured, regardless of what might be going on in the wider world. The exceptional positional design of Vista Lago Residences allows for views over the lake, La Concha mountain, golf courses, and the Spanish coastline to Gibraltar and the African continent beyond, all while sitting in your own lounge! The environment is simply breathtaking. For more information on this one-of-a-kind project, or to reserve your villa, contact Andrew Lee on (+34) 648 981 111 Pol. Ind. HOME OFFICE WORKS... But Nothing Replaces Human Interaction Interview with Jana Novakova Interior Design Director of AALTO Exclusive Design
How have you been coping with COVID-19 and the confinement? Confinement has been a very busy two-month period, with home office work. We attended our clients through Zoom, Skype, phone or email to provide design services. Although nothing replaces human contact and selecting materials together with your clients, home office also works. We took the opportunity to revise our processes to improve our services and also design new collection pieces. I believe this confinement has made people realise that they are more comfortable in a home office and with online shopping than ever before, and the trend will continue. We launched our online furniture e-shop platform before COVID-19 took hold, and following the pandemic, now we realise how beneficial it was to have taken this step. We will be regularly adding interesting products into the e-shop to grow this side of our business. 148
Tell us something about your design studio and what type of services you offer... AALTO has been under new ownership, and run by managing partner Ness Yammine and myself as design director, for the last 12 months. We offer personalised interior design services, for both residential properties and commercial projects, to professional and private clients. We showcase our own luxury furniture collection and the various international brands we work with, in a 800 square metre multi-brand showroom on the Golden Mile in Marbella. We capitalise on our interior design studio, with the know-how of our team of architects, interior designers and graphic designers, as well as the expertise of carpenters in our manufacturing plant in Málaga, to offer bespoke projects, tailor-made to our clients’ needs and budgets, both locally and internationally.

What was your most recent project? We have recently finalised the interior design of one of Urbania’s ICON Signature villas, marketed by NVOGA. One of the beauties of this unique development is its generous spaces and views, overlooking the golf course and the sea, transpiring tranquillity. We were inspired by the surrounding greenery, grey mountain and sea views to blend them into the interior of the living area, to create indooroutdoor living. Each of the bedrooms has a different twist to it, bearing in mind the different tastes of family members, all of them having a homely and relaxed ambiance. As we do for all our projects, we approached this one as individual and unique, using high-quality finishes, bespoke furnishing items and art, and award-winning design lighting and brand furniture combined with our own Aalto collection pieces. The atmosphere created emphasises the natural beauty of the Icon signature villa location, where the sun further creates light and shadow effects in a spectacularly unique way.
What are you working on now? We are very busy working in parallel on projects delayed because of the confinement with new ones. One of our most stunning projects is a magnificent villa on the beach, designed by Rodolfo Jacobsen in a completely futuristic style not commonly seen in Marbella, which will be completed by August. We are working on projects in Puente Romano, Nueva Andalucía and Sierra Blanca – and even Luxembourg. Certainly, the future will bring changes in our industry, and we are confident we have the capacity to adapt to them and continue to provide highquality services to our clients. Avda. BATTISTA ANNIVERSARIO Potent Celebration of Legendary Pininfarina Design
Automobili Pininfarina describe it as the world’s first luxury pure-electric hyper GT. The Battista Anniversario is, they declare, “the ultimate design expression of the most powerful road-legal Italian car ever made”. Officially unveiled just before the coronavirus pandemic shut down Italy, and most of the rest of the world, the hypercar was designed as a celebration of 90 years since Battista “Pinin” Farina created the legendary Pininfarina coachbuilder and design house. It will be hand-crafted in Cambiano (Turin), where Pininfarina have their design centre and headquarters, and only five will be produced, each priced from €2.6 million. The Anniversario is presented in a Pininfarina bespoke heritage-inspired design theme with aerodynamic enhancements, and features new forged aluminium wheels and performance-oriented tyres, with a top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph). 152
No more than 150 Battista hypercars, including the five Anniversario models, will be built, and they are expected to enter into production by the end of 2020. “For 90 years,” says Automobili Pininfarina CEO Michael Perschke, “the Pininfarina name has been at the forefront of automotive design and performance, and the Battista perfectly encapsulates these values. This ultimate expression of Battista, the Anniversario is the distillation of everything that the brand has stood for in the past and which we now strive for in the future, creating a new pinnacle of desirability for sustainable and luxurious electric cars.” Added Pininfarina SpA chairman Paolo Pininfarina, “My grandfather always had the vision that one day there would be a stand-alone range of Pininfarina-branded cars. The Battista Anniversario, named in his honour to

mark 90 years of the carrozzeria that he started, is a glorious way to link our past with the future of motoring.” Each of the five Anniversario cars is finished in a combination of three signature colours: Bianco Sestriere, the new Grigio Antonelliano, and the signature Iconica Blu. According to Automobili Pininfarina, skilled artisans in Cambiano take several weeks to paint each car, building up the finish layer-by-layer and colour-by-colour – all by hand. The body is disassembled and reassembled three times so pinstripes in the three separate colours can be hand-painted directly onto the body. The process of creating such a finish, explains chief design officer Luca Borgogno, “is akin to a great artist completing an Old Master painting. The result is more than just a visual work of art. Styling, balanced with ultimate performance, produces a genuine Pininfarina: the beauty of power and the power of beauty.” The Battista Anniversario is also equipped with the “Furiosa” package, comprising a revised carbon fibre front splitter, side blades and rear diffuser. The aerodynamic enhancements enabled by the Furiosa exterior changes are said to deliver increased downforce and greater stability at higher cornering speeds and a more dynamic balance to the car. The Anniversario’s handling dynamism is further sharpened by a reduction in unsprung weight of almost 10 kilograms, thanks to a new wheel design featuring centre-lock forged aluminium wheels. Technically, the Anniversario shares its underpinnings with the Battista. “Its carbon fibre monocoque chassis and body provide the strong foundation and backbone of the hyper GT, with its four electric motors generating 1,900 hp and 2,300 Nm torque, apportioned to each wheel by the most advanced torque vectoring system. This delivers a level of performance that is unachievable today in any road-legal sports car with an internal combustion engine. Faster than a current Formula 1 car in the sub-two second 0-100 km/h sprint, the Battista accelerates from zero to 300 km/h in less than 12 seconds.” These performance levels are delivered alongside a zero-emissions range of over 500 kilometres. The car’s 120 kWh battery pack is mounted within a strong T-shaped carbon frame low down in the chassis. Referring to the Battista’s dynamic testing phase, test and development driver Nick Heidfeld says, “I have piloted the quickest road and race cars in the world. I’ve never driven anything as powerful as the Battista. The Battista is faster than many race cars, but it is not a pure racing machine. Drivability in all situations is its primary focus. We will now concentrate our time testing and developing Battista to deliver a car that’s at the forefront of technological possibilities and innovation.” HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

One of Ibiza’s most tranquil and picturesque hotel settings now has an added attraction for booking a summer stay. Just before the coronavirus pandemic halted the tourism industry throughout Spain, the owners of the Petunia Ibiza hotel purchased a popular family-owned restaurant on the island. La Mesa Escondida was their favourite restaurant, and after the purchase they embarked on a refurbishment with a view to re-opening it in a new location within the hotel once the “State of Alarm” lockdown was lifted. The restaurant has the same chef, Lorenzo Garrispani, who will continue preparing his “much-loved dishes with a strong focus on garden-to-table Mediterranean cuisine”, while also creating special new dishes. During the lockdown, the hotel launched an online delivery service with a menu of easy-to-prepare dishes for locals to enjoy at home until the restaurant was “properly re-opened”. Purchased and reopened in 2019 following a major renovation, the Petunia Ibiza provides guests with one of the best views on the island, overlooking Es Vedra on the sedate south coast. The hotel is located by the shores of Cala Carbó, a charming cove surrounded by fragrant pine vegetation – a wonderful setting to enjoy a quiet holiday with the family, a partner or friends. It is 10 minutes from San Josep village, just five minutes from the boat that travels across to the Es Vedra rocky island outcrop, and a convenient 30 minutes from the airport. Extending a warm welcome to guests, the owners say, “We hope you will forget the world, unwind and lengthen your life in this idyllic spot. Petunia is an ideal location if you want to enjoy tranquil holidays and be close to old Ibiza town or hopping Ibiza dance and beach spots.” The hotel comprises one and two-bedroom units, all with stunning sea views, a large pool (with restaurantbar service), gardens, chill-out areas and a rooftop bar for admiring the area’s exceptional sunsets. “Petunia invites you to disconnect and refresh your senses.” As to be expected in the current situation, or “New Normal” following the end of the lockdown and borders being re-opened for tourists from other European Union countries, ensuring strict adherence to coronavirus precautions is paramount. “The safety and well-being of our guests and associates are of the utmost priority. While the COVID-19 situation is still developing around the world, Petunia Ibiza is operating to the highest levels of health and safety vigilance, working in accordance with local and international authority advisories and protocols. “We have intensified precautionary health measures at our property, including briefing all employees on enhanced personal hygiene as well as the increased cleaning of all public areas and ventilation systems. “As Petunia Ibiza continues to closely monitor the situation, the highest standards of hygiene practices will continue to be enforced as the property follows protocols set by the government and health officials in Spain.” The hotel stresses that its booking policy “remains flexible at this time”. reservations@petuniaibiza.com www.petuniaibiza.com HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Creative Steakhouse Cuisine from
DANI GARCÍA
Marbella’s most renowned chef has returned with another sumptuous and pacesetting concept in haute cuisine. Described as “a new kind of steakhouse, set to revolutionise the grilling world”, Leña is located in Puente Romano Beach Resort, replacing Dani García’s former eponymous three-star Michelin restaurant. After the restaurant was awarded its third star at the end of 2018, García announced that he would relinquish its Michelin ranking the following year, explaining at the time that he wanted to take his celebrated cuisine in a different direction. Since then he has been involved in other projects, including two separate establishments in Marbella (Bibo and Lobito del Mar), a cookery show on the national TVE channel, and expansion of the Dani García Group into other markets, including Madrid and the Middle East. But returning to Leña (which translates as “firewood” or “wood fire”)... The restaurant was devised “as part of Dani García’s ongoing dream to bring his recipes to everyone everywhere, this time through a concept he’s been 156
cooking up for a long, long time: a grill-house that signals a departure from the usual stereotypes by combining tradition, innovation and produce in a way that only he can do”. This steakhouse concept comprises “an irresistible duality for its guests: the balance between Dani García’s technique and his sense of honesty and respect for the produce”. The menu is “all about the raw material and its versatility on the grill, but with a highly personal touch and a real international influence, born of the chef’s travels and experiences around the world”. The starters include charcoal-roasted edamame with salt or spicy lemon sauce; charcoal-grilled roasted bimi (“the world’s healthiest vegetable”) with romesco sauce; charcoal-grilled Burgos blood sausage and green apple purée; fried chicken oysters (“the sweetest part of the chicken”) with a hint of lemon; and carpaccio of cured beef, black truffle sauce and parmesan cheese. Plus, various “yakipincho” skewer dishes – García’s “Hispano-Japanese take on traditional yakitori”.
JULY & AUGUST 2020
Cuisine HL69.indd 156
26/6/20 15:06
As for the mains, the menu introduction is – as to be expected – alluring. “The fire’s always lit here. Product, technique, versatility and passion, when combined, make a beautiful blaze and create the finest embers in Marbella and the world.” The dishes combine the customary Dani García signature style with new innovations… such as aged beef “minced before your eyes”, with bull sauce, pretzel and havarti cheese, inspired by the hamburger served at the threestar Dani García Restaurant; veal loin pan-fried Milanese-style in French butter; wood-fired oven-roasted leg of lamb aux fines herbes; “Surf & Turf” of roast lobster with Café de Paris sauce and beef tenderloin with mashed potato and meat jus; and wagyu beef from Kobe, tamari sauce and fresh wasabi. And for non-meat eaters… charcoal-grilled sea bass, with lemon rind confit and extra virgin olive oil, and charcoalgrilled salmon loin. Desserts also, of course, dazzle the senses… including rum baba “in honour of Dusasse” with vanilla chantilly cream; slow-roasted sliced pineapple, passion fruit and refreshing candy; crème caramel with yuzu, clove biscuit and basil; and strawberries stewed with pepper, yoghurt icecream and grated orange. The concept of the restaurant décor, designed by the Astet studio, “treasures the essence of the primitive, of fire, embers and primary materials such as stone and wood”. The entire space is stained-black, a dominant jet black colour that covers everything – the walls, ceilings, floors and furniture – with the nuances of a brighter palette dotted around the restaurant. This tone was created as a testimony of burned or charred wood using the Japanese Yakisugi technique. Black is considered the best background to highlight the hues of meat and the restaurant’s other dishes. In short, nature is prominent throughout Leña, showcasing elements that highlight the restaurant’s organic aesthetic. TIMES THEY ARE A’CHANGING By AJ Linn
Spain allegedly has more bars per head of population than any other country in the world. Many families live off the modest income provided by a small café in some town or village that also serves as a community centre. Regrettably this may all be set to change, and the indications are that going out for a drink or a meal in future will be more stressful than staying at home and ordering a takeaway. The coronavirus epidemic has changed many things, and anyone under 15 years of age will wonder how on earth we managed to live such a crowded and physically intimate social life before the spring of 2020. We should never forget that the Spanish race is very touchy-feely and, whereas a polite handshake could be considered verging on physical intimacy in many northern European countries and the USA, the sight of two men with their arms around each other in public is normal here. Which is why the originally-proposed regulations governing physical contact as a result of COVID-19 were so un-Spanish and fortunately never actually imposed. These unprecedented conditions for bars and restaurants anticipated that no air-conditioning or extractor fans would be allowed, and time limits for eating (30 minutes for breakfast and 90 for main meals) were to be the order of the day. And it goes without saying that, if we were in a bar or café with our family and we saw some friends, we should not walk over and hug them, as we would have done pre-CV. Maybe a not-so-cheery wave? Obviously none of this is conducive to getting business back to pre-epidemic levels, although undeniably any bar or restaurant with a large terrace is ahead of the game, and town halls are being remarkably flexible when it comes to allowing large chunks of city pavements to become extensions of local businesses. Just as well in a country where the closure of bars, cafeterías and restaurants has been argued as a reasonable cause for the country to lose a vital part of its cultural fabric. Finally reason prevailed and the current regulations are based almost entirely on social distancing. While Spain may have been its usual ponderous self, restaurant operators in other countries have demonstrated considerable innovative skills. Copenhagen’s Noma, regularly voted the “best restaurant in the world”, is now 158
transformed into a wine and hamburger eatery. On opening night it sold out of everything in the first hour. And we have all seen pictures of restaurants where diners eat in tiny glass cubicles where staff serve the food from the door using what appear to be pizza oven paddles. The latest development has been the introduction of robots to serve at tables. Surely practical but won’t we miss that humorous banter with the waiter? And wine sales? The hit the trade has taken is seriously affecting every wine-producing country, and the most concerning factor is that warehouses are still largely full of last year’s vintage. So where will wine from this year’s vintage be stored? There is nothing worse for the wine lover than to dwell on the possibility of the delicious liquid being poured down the drain, but this is a real possibility – even though it will not be the first time it has happened. Makers of distilled products of course are delighted. Not only can they tailor their production to demand without having to hold stocks, but, per degree of alcohol, gin, whisky and vodka need less storage space than wine. This is probably why sales soared during lockdown, along with beer it must be admitted, while wine, and definitely champagne sales, were badly hit. This last is interesting and bears out the commonly-held belief that we only drink champagne to impress other people. So, if we are locked down at home with our partner – or worse, on our own – popping a bottle of bubbly may be agreeable but no-one is around to say, “Oooh! Look at them…!” Take-away meals, once promoted as a savior for long-suffering restaurants, have not had the success that was originally anticipated. In the first place, the delivery firms charge too high a commission to make the final bill reasonable for the customer. And, even if the meal comes from our favourite restaurant and the quality is as good as we would expect, eating at home using our own plates and glassware is not very exciting. Nor does wine usually form part of the deal, although it can be argued that if you are not driving there is no reason to go easy on the red stuff. By the time you read this it will be clear whether the experiment has been successful or not.

MUSCLE STRENGTH AND OUR DIET Gender Differences By Rachel Garrod
We are cautiously emerging from lockdown. And now it seems like time to take stock of our health again. I was fortunate to have access to a treadmill (it had not seen the light of day for a long time) so managed to maintain my cardiovascular fitness (pretty much). But I found it hard to motivate myself to perform resisted exercise; I am sure I have suffered from muscle loss. So for me the priority now is to regain muscle strength. Apart from the obvious – training – what else can I do? New research from the journal Mechanisms of Ageing and Development has highlighted the influence of nutrition on muscle strength in older people. We know that protein is an essential component in building muscle (and that more than half of older people in the UK do not consume enough protein) but this research tells us more about the impact of what we eat and how that differs according to gender. The authors considered the diets of over 68,000 people (over-60s) and compared this with tests of muscle strength as determined by handgrip strength. In both men and women there was a negative association between carbohydrate intake and muscle strength: the more carbohydrate consumed the weaker the handgrip. In men and women consumption of retinol (from dairy products, salmon, eggs, beef liver and cod liver oil) and magnesium (avocados, seed, legumes and whole grains) was associated with better performance on the handgrip test. 160
Among women there were positive associations between strength and the consumption of red meat, oily fish, fruits and vegetables, vitamins C, B12 E, and iron. Cereal, bread, cheese, poultry and processed meat were not associated with strength in women. Men showed a slightly different profile, with stronger performance seen among those who ate poultry and oily fish. Bread and processed meat were negatively associated with muscle strength in both men and women. So, it appears that the importance of nutrients and food items may differ according to our gender. As for me, I am going to reduce my carbohydrate load and up my protein, vegetables and oily fish intake for a while, and get back to the gym when I am allowed. Practising social distancing, of course! You may be interested in watching a little video of strength and stretching exercises I made during lockdown. THE GLOBAL QUEST for Coronavirus Treatments Medical Minutes by John Schieszer
NEW IDENTIFICATION OF GENETIC BASIS OF COVID-19 SUSCEPTIBILITY Italian researchers are reporting that they have been able to identify the genetic basis of susceptibility to COVID-19 infection. This has important implications for treatment and drug development. The clinical presentation of COVID-19 varies from patient to patient, and understanding individual genetic susceptibility to the disease is therefore vital to prognosis, prevention and the development of new treatments. Scientists have been able to identify the genetic and molecular basis of this susceptibility to infection as well as to the possibility of contracting a more severe form of the disease. Professor Alessandra Renieri, who is director of the Medical Genetics Unit at the University Hospital of Siena in Italy, is part of a team that collected genomic samples from COVID-19 patients across the whole of Italy in order to try to identify the genetic bases of the high level of clinical variability they showed. Using whole exome sequencing (WES) to study the first data from 130 COVID-19 patients from Siena and other Tuscan institutions, they were able to uncover a number of common susceptibility genes that were linked to a favourable or unfavourable outcome. “We believe that variations in these genes may determine disease progression,” said Renieri. These results will have significant implications for health and healthcare policy. Understanding the genetic profile of patients may allow the repurposing of existing medicines for specific therapeutic approaches against COVID-19 as well as speeding the development of new antiviral drugs. Being able to identify patients’ susceptible to severe pneumonia and their responsiveness to specific drugs will allow rapid public health treatment interventions. RE-PURPOSED CANCER DRUG FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH SEVERE COVID-19 Early data from a clinical study is suggesting that blocking the Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK) protein with the cancer drug acalabrutinib may provide clinical benefits to some patients with severe COVID-19. Researchers observed that the off-label use of acalabrutinib, a BTK inhibitor that is approved to treat several blood cancers, was associated with reduced respiratory distress and a reduction in the overactive immune response in most of the treated patients.
Researchers conducted a prospective off-label clinical study that included 19 patients with a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis that required hospitalisation. Of these patients, 11 had been receiving supplemental oxygen for a median of two days, and eight others had been on ventilators for a median of 1.5 days (range 1-22 days). Within one to three days after they began receiving acalabrutinib, the majority of patients in the supplemental oxygen group experienced a substantial drop in inflammation and their breathing improved. In this study, eight of these 11 patients were able to come off supplemental oxygen and were discharged from the hospital. Although the benefit of acalabrutinib was less dramatic in patients on ventilators, four of the eight patients were able to come off the ventilator, two of whom were eventually discharged. The authors note that the ventilator patient group was extremely clinically diverse and included patients who had been on a ventilator for prolonged periods of time and had major organ dysfunction. Two of the patients in this group died. Blood samples from patients in the study showed that levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), a major cytokine associated with hyper inflammation in severe COVID-19, decreased after treatment with acalabrutinib. Counts of lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) also rapidly improved in most patients. A low lymphocyte count has been associated with worse outcome for patients with severe COVID-19. The researchers also tested blood cells from patients with severe COVID-19 who were not in the study. In comparison with samples from healthy volunteers, they found that the patients with severe COVID-19 had higher activity of the BTK protein and greater production of IL-6. These findings suggest that acalabrutinib may have been effective because its target (BTK) is hyperactive in severe COVID-19 immune cells. The authors of the study caution that this strategy now must be tested in a randomised, controlled clinical trial in order to understand the best and safest treatment options for patients with severe COVID-19. CULTURAL SPLENDOUR in Málaga
In recent years Málaga has become established as one of Europe’s major cultural hubs. The city centre is home to a diverse array of museums, art galleries, theatres, and other cultural exhibitions and monuments. The coronavirus pandemic forced their temporary closure but now, with the “State of Alarm” lockdown lifted and people once again able to visit public attractions, Málaga has revamped its cultural agenda for summer and beyond – while also enhancing digital presentations of latest shows. Plus, of course, ensuring all COVID-19 health protocols and measures are in full force for the protection and safety of patrons… This issue we publish a comprehensive directory of all the main cultural establishments in Málaga – and highlight the new Museo Picasso Málaga collection. 162

Museo Picasso Málaga reflects Pablo Picasso’s own constant innovation by periodically refreshing its permanent collection. The new presentation is the sixth transformation of the exhibition rooms in the Palacio de Buenavista since the museum’s inauguration in 2003. The collection covers almost 80 years of the artist’s creative output and, with 233 works belonging to Museo Picasso Málaga and a further 162 from the Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso para el Arte (FABA), it comprises almost 400 in total – dating from between 1894 and 1972. According to associate curator Pepe Karmel, who devised the exhibition concept, “The challenge in displaying the work of Pablo Picasso is to do justice to his astonishing diversity while also demonstrating the unity and coherence of his work. In just a few years, Picasso travelled from the drama and tenderness of the Blue and Rose Periods to the cerebral experiment of cubism. After the First World War, he invented a new, modern form of classicism. In the 1920s and ‘30s, he went back and forth among cubism, classicism and surrealism. After World War II, he invented new styles for which art historians have still not found names.”

The stunning central plaza at Puente Romano Beach Resort was reopened in June with a special party for “friends and family”. The celebrations marked the inauguration of a new, and distinctive, summer season in Marbella. In the case of Puente Romano, this “re-invention” was highlighted by the presentation of new culinary experiences. These include the inauguration of Leña, the new grill restaurant created by celebrated local-
born chef Dani García and his global gastronomy group, “breaking with stereotypes and combining tradition and innovation”. Also now open is Les Jardins, where guests can savour cocktails in a magnificent al fresco ambience surrounded by tropical gardens; and Supper Club, “a memorable and exceptional gastronomic experience, where people can enjoy an authentic Mediterranean fiesta”. www.puenteromano.com / @PuenteRomanoResort

Due to the current situation, they say, as Spain emerges from the coronavirus outbreak and national lockdown, “future owners will benefit from a 20 per cent discount on the official sales price during a limited period, and for the first 10 clients”. One of the main aims of their offer, note Otero Group (one of Spain’s premier development companies), is to help with the country’s economic recovery. The Hub Málaga comprises two buildings with a total of 44 one and two-bedroom apartments, and 61 garages and storerooms. A €16 million project to remodel the development is being undertaken over the next 12 months, and the keys are expected to be handed over to the owners in mid-2021. The Hub Málaga’s exceptional facilities include a large modern-designed swimming pool and chill-out area on one of the rooftop terraces overlooking Europa Park (in the western part of Málaga city). A gastro bar will be located on the other terrace, with a barbecue area, external kitchen for owners’ use, and sofa and dining area – all of which can be reserved through an exclusive app that includes a range of personal and communal services. ART MARBELLA
EVENT RESCHEDULED IN CONJUNCTION WITH MARBELLA DESIGN The sixth annual edition of Art Marbella will be held at the Palacio de Ferias, Congresos y Expocisiones from 24 September to 3 October. For the first time, the international and contemporary art fair will take place alongside Marbella Design. According to Alejandro Zaia, director of both events, this is due to the “unusual times that we all find ourselves in”. This special year, he said, health measures and the safety of the public and exhibitors should come first. “Slowly, a new normal is becoming our reality, and we are sure that Marbella and its surrounding beautiful coast will recover this summer. We could have cancelled both events and continued next year, but we strongly believe that our clients, our public and Marbella itself greatly benefit from this event, and we owe it to them to carry forward. It is an important year for art and design and we want to make their importance and vitality present.” www.marbellafair.com

Can an awning be merged visually into the architecture of a house? The Markilux 3300 proves that it can, according to Acoola Europe. “Depending on the structural situation, this designer awning, with its smooth front profile, disappears completely into a wall or precisely into a recess. When extended, it comes into its own with dimensions of up to seven by four metres. And you can shade even larger areas by coupling up to three single awnings together.” Also available from Acoola, the B250 XL aluminum outdoor living pergola, with 21-centimetre wide louvers, is a splash-proof version of the B200 XL. Thanks to the “perfect” fit of the blades onto the gutters, the roof is splash-proof, while wind resistance (CE wind class 2) is also guaranteed. For those who choose the optional integrated ZIP screens and patio heating, the roof is wind-free (CE wind class 2) and the pleasant radiant heat is also better maintained. In addition, the screens can be divided by a door pole to create an opening and a fast passage. “The design of the B250 XL is more stylish than ever and the roof can be closed perfectly. Furthermore, create the right atmosphere with dim-
mable lighting such as a LED strip in the louvres or spots in the frame.” The Brustor terrace roofs with RTS control can be operated easily with a smartphone or tablet, and even with a speech assistant such as Google Home or Amazon Alexa. PROPERTY CONVEYANCING IN SPAIN Article supplied by Welex Lawyers & Accountants
The first step in property conveyancing in Spain is finding a property. It is imperative to get to know the area before you choose a property. You should visit a number of different locations in order to make an educated decision. Additional research into similar properties in various areas will give you different perspectives of what you can anticipate in terms of price. The second step in property conveyancing in Spain is choosing an expert property lawyer. A lawyer in Spain can impart extremely useful advice from the initial stage of the purchasing process. Your expert property lawyer will make enquiries to ensure that all the parties involved, including the seller or developer, are acting legitimately. A lawyer will take the necessary measures to safeguard that all the Spanish legal requirements are met. Additionally, a legal firm will ensure that the property is free of any encumbrances that could affect your use of the land. You will also need to ensure that there are no outstanding debts for local taxes or service charges attached to the property. The purchasing process in property conveyancing in Spain includes: 1. Finding a property and preparing to buy 2. Legal process – step-by-step 3. Calculating the costs – fees and taxes 4. Equating various other expenses Step 1: Negotiating the purchase Step 2: Reservation contract and deposit Step 3: Private purchase contracts Step 4: Completion Step 5: Registration of title deeds The selling process in property conveyancing in Spain includes: 1. Obtaining necessary documents 2. Calculating the costs – fees and taxes 170
3. Calculating service charges 4. Calculating annual Real Estate Tax (IBI) 5. Establishing property owners’ imputed income tax Other legal matters pertaining to property conveyancing in Spain include: 1. Obtaining NIE identification number 2. Making a will in Spain 3. Inheritance tax 4. Minimising your liability for inheritance tax 5. Investment opportunities in Spain Ensuring that you have all the necessary documents will expedite the legal process of property conveyancing in Spain. You should register the following documents with your lawyer or estate agent when you place your property up for sale.... · A copy of the Title Deed (Escritura Pública) · A copy of your latest Real Estate Tax receipt (Impuesto sobre Bienes Inmuebles – IBI) · A copy of the Rateable Value Certificate (Certificado Catastral). This contains your property’s official reference number (Referencia Catastral) with the Land Registry and gives a complete description of the property. · A copy of your latest Spanish Income Tax declaration (Declaración de la Renta) · A copy of your Residents’ Association payment details (Comunidad de Propietarios) · A copy of all your current utility bills Welex Lawyers & Accountants C/ Ramón Gómez de la Serna 23, Local 7, Marbella Tel.
