Editorial The concept of “20-minute neighbourhoods” has been gaining adepts around the world in recent times. Essentially, the idea is that modern cities which sprawl out into the suburbs should be shaped and developed into neighbourhoods where all the main requirements for a good life are close at hand. As two of the consultants behind the “Plan Melbourne” long-term landuse scheme in Australia, John Stanley and Roz Hansen, explained it in The Conversation, it’s “all about ‘living locally’ – giving people the ability to meet most of their everyday needs within a 20-minute walk, cycle or local public transport trip of their home”. These include community-based amenities, shopping outlets and commercial centres, educational institutions, leisure, recreational and sporting facilities, key business services and even job opportunities. The concept was not about travel by car, they wrote. “It is about active transport (walking, cycling) and the use of public transport. The goal is that this combination of modes would offer a reasonably sized catchment area in which people, jobs and services, including recreational opportunities and nature, are accessible.” They noted that Melbourne’s planning idea had already gained recognition in international planning circles. “For example, Singapore’s recent Land Transport Master Plan 2040 is based on shaping the city and its transport systems to achieve 20-minute towns within a 45-minute city.” So what about the Costa del Sol? In many ways, the main towns along the coast epitomise the “20-minute neighbour” concept – not so much by any grand design but almost by natural progression. Over the decades, since the Coast first started to emerge from its relatively unobtrusive existence as a string of former fishing villages and fledgling urbanisations, this part of southern Spain has been transformed into an admirable model of close and compact community living. Okay, maybe with a few multi-storey and urban monstrosities along the way, but essentially hundreds of thousands of homes where people have convenient access to all the aforementioned “20-minute” services and amenities. In the case of the Costa del Sol, this also includes an impressive array of home decoration showrooms, furniture stores, garden centres and other lifestyle outlets and studios. Many are stunningly and comprehensively showcased in this issue’s décor and design sections – featuring products, styles and trends that are inspired by such major annual fairs as Maison&Objet in Paris. This year, to mark a new decade and its 25th anniversary, Maison&Objet is dedicating both its January and September editions to the theme “(RE)GENERATION!”. One of the objectives is to give visitors valuable insight into consumer behavior by generations Y and Z, and their commitment to eco-friendly brands. As the organisers noted in one of their daily reviews of the January exhibition, “Today’s young designers have already made environmental concerns a part of their creative process. Their committed approach appeals to a new generation of well-informed consumers who are willing to accept the higher prices often associated with eco-awareness. These designers are aware that innovation and strong propositions are key to their success.” Photo: KSL Living (www.ksl-living.fr).

Outdoor Living

TRENDS As we enter into warmer temperatures, it is time to assess our furniture outside so we can enjoy the outdoors again in comfort and style. Create cosy areas in your outdoor space with welcoming sofas and chairs, plus useful tables where you can easily rest drinks and reading material. The feeling of bringing the indoors outside is now commonplace thanks to advancing technology in fabrics. Seating can be upholstered in a beautiful material that is inviting and stylish, yet weather-resistant and durable. A good cooking station outside, whether it is an outdoor kitchen or a top-quality barbecue or grill, can be transformative to your living habits, encouraging you to spend more time enjoying the outdoors whilst having convenient cooking facilities that are at arm’s length. Natural materials and colours have become more prevalent in recent furniture collections hitting the market, blending seamlessly into the surrounding environment.

The Rafael outdoor lounge range from Ethimo combines vibrant colour with natural teak, marble and lava stone. Its eclectic look gives this new 2020 range from Ethimo a contemporary yet casual look that is also sophisticated and well put-together. Ethimo is available from Outdoor Concepts at the top of the Boulevard in San Pedro de Alcántara (www.outdoorconcepts.es) and through Siesta Interior Design in C. Plaza in Nueva Andalucía (www. siestainteriordesign.com).

Inspirational Ideas for

OUTDOOR LIVING AT OUTDOOR CONCEPTS Photos by Julia Roder

34 MARCH & APRIL 2020

The natural love that we humans have for the outdoors plays a huge part in why many people have decided to relocate to southern Spain for a better quality of life. Outdoor Concepts, situated at the end of the busy boulevard in San Pedro de Alcántara, is an innovative design showroom dedicated to everything outdoor, and outdoor only. From cutting-edge furniture, fireplaces, kitchens, barbecues, pergolas and parasols to accessories, Outdoor Concepts provides everything you can think of so that all aspects of outdoor living are covered. With so many companies on the Coast catering to homeowners who want to enjoy outdoor life within the parameters of their own home, how has Outdoor Concepts established itself as one of the leaders of the pack? We visited their showroom to meet owners Daniel and Daiva and find out more… The bright and airy Outdoor Concepts showroom is an inspiring space offering high-quality designer brands spanning all aspects of outdoor living. When Daniel and Daiva started the business, they realised there was a demand from discerning homeowners to visit and try-out good-quality furniture first-hand. Though they acknowledge that online shopping is a growing market, when purchasing high-quality furniture, they recognised the importance of a more personal service offering the touch-and-feel factor with a huge variety of products ready and available to see in the showroom. They even assemble your purchase in your home, removing the hassle of having to put it together yourself. With the rising trend for companies to offer low-quality copies of designer furniture, Daniel and Daiva wanted to be different, setting them apart from many of their competitors, and they are wholeheartedly committed to offering the “real deal”, thus guaranteeing superlative quality and durability.

The dynamic couple are always on the look-out for new products to hit the market, so they visit the major design fairs to seek inspiration and find out what is new in this fast-moving sector. They have embraced the trend of melding the indoors with the outdoors, and stock many outdoor furniture items that utilise avant-garde weather-resistant materials that are easy to maintain and look like they belong inside the home. They have a cosier feel texturally and aesthetically than traditional outdoor fabrics, but are perfectly suitable for outdoor use. The showroom is testament to their passion for cutting-edge outdoor living: you will find iconic products such as the Big Green Egg barbecue grill, Bull & Stein ceramic fruit, Biossun bioclimatic pergolas, Bromic heaters, EcoSmart fireplaces, Contardi outdoor lighting and designer furniture from a wide range of world-leading brands such as Dedon, Unopiù, Ethimo and Fast, to name but a few. An interesting avenue they are pursuing is customised outdoor kitchens. They noticed that this was a weak area in the general outdoor market, which they wanted to improve on and conquer, so now they offer tabletop gas hobs and barbecue grills with a wide range of finishes, materials and colours with functional and attractive storage solutions at great value. The kitchen can be made-to-measure, catering for the exact requirements of the customer. Outdoor Concepts Avda. Juan Vargas (on the corner of Avda. La Coruña), San Pedro de Alcántara Tel. LOUNGE

Love

The living room is not only where the household comes together to relax. It is also a room where your guests usually visit first, so making a good impression here is always a good start. A living room should have a well thought out seating arrangement, enabling you to walk around easily, and ideally be decked out with handy side tables and poufs at-the-ready for convenience. Modular sofas are always great to perfectly furnish the room to the size of the space, and they also offer versatility should you want to rearrange the room at a later date. To make the room inviting, consider circular tables for easier movement around the room and to break-up any hard, straight lines, especially if you have seats parallel to each other. A statement chair, a bold painting or a showstopping lamp are all elements you can put into the space to add personality and a designer touch.

SWEETNESS and Light Add instant aesthetic gratification with carefully considered lighting solutions in your home. Lighting can transform a space into a magical oasis, making it inviting and cosy. Grouping pendant lamps is a great way to make a design statement, while adding soft glowing light to your outside space will make you want to spend more time enjoying the natural beauty of your garden as the evenings gradually get warmer. Wall sconces and ceiling lamps are excellent for a sleek and contemporary look, or go for glamour with a wow-factor chandelier. Directional lighting can sometimes justifiably be accused of being simply functional – hence a little boring – but there are also fun and innovative ideas in this area of lighting. Here are some ideas…

Fabric Fantastic Texture gives rooms a warmer ambience, which is one key reason why fabrics play a strong role in creating the right look and feel in a home, making it more inviting and cosier. Whether you want to go boho with heavy cottons and linens or light and feminine with sheers, or perhaps you prefer a more opulent look with iridescent velvets, fabrics can set the mood perfectly. What is more, you don’t have to go great lengths to achieve the look. Re-upholstering a favourite sofa, pouf or armchair, re-covering some cushions in a fresh new fabric or putting up some new curtains can be a simple job but achieve a very effective result. The sophisticated and exuberant Versailles range from JAB Anstoetz is available from Cortidea on the Mijas Road and in Urb. Marbella Real (www.cortidea.es), Casasola Décor near Torre Real (www.casasoladecor.com) and Aalto Exclusive Furniture in Urb. Carolina Park in Marbella (www.aaltofurniture.com).

CLEVER kitchens The kitchen is arguably the hub of the home, where the family comes together to eat and chat. If your kitchen needs a facelift, there’s no time like the present to give it a few tweaks and turn your tired cooking space into a dream living area. Adding some natural materials to the kitchen. such as a stone countertop or wooden cabinetry, can really change the feel of the space. Combining different styles – having cutting-edge modern appliances, for example, or faucets with a vintage lamp or mirror – can add interest and personality to the room. Reforming your kitchen is an investment, so think it through carefully before sending in the builders. Sometimes just a few small updates can make a big difference.

Bringing Style to the Table

96 MARCH & APRIL 2020

Your dining table plays a big part in the home. Whether you are eating around it, catching up with friends with a big mug of coffee and biscuits, or using it to work on, it is a worthwhile investment and one that needs to be well thought through. For a start, the shape of the table is important. If space is an issue, consider a circular table so it is easy to walk around, and always make sure that the chairs are comfortable and at a good height – with adequate space between your legs and the bottom of the tabletop.

Masquespacio and Houtique presented the Wink chair at Maison & Objet this year, delighting us with its fanciful fringing and design (www.masquespacio.com).

BEDROOM to Boudoir

As spring is now getting into full swing, we need to start packing away our blankets and consider lighter bed linen options. When it comes to buying new bed linen, this is an area that you really shouldn’t scrimp on. Good-quality linen will not only last much longer but also allow your skin to breathe, giving you a better night’s sleep and ensuring a better next day! As much as clutter is a definite no-no in a bedroom, don’t go the other way by making it too sterile with a minimalist look. Don’t be afraid to place some treasured items in the room, such as a much-loved painting, vase or trunk, for example, as they will make the space feel like it is truly your own personal haven – which all helps in inducing relaxation. Window solutions are very important in the bedroom, so consider dramatic ceilingto-floor curtains or contemporary blinds to completely block out light for the best night’s sleep. Technology is moving ahead extremely fast in the home, and the bedroom has certainly not missed out. Now you can buy a bed that accommodates any position or firmness that you require at the time – and all of this at the touch of a button. Lighting with dimmer switches is perfect for the bedroom, and you should also consider bedside lighting that is manoeuvrable so you can direct the light where you want it to be if and when you change position. Here are some ideas…

Bathroom Specialists Creating Innovative Home Settings Interview with Davinia Pérez. Photos: Damián Rilo

We visit international fairs for sources of inspiration, are always attentive to ensure we make good product choices with our suppliers, provide expert training to our team, and offer great energy and dedication to customers. We are hugely thankful to them for their loyalty. Our motto is: Renovate or die! What products do you specialise in? We have a wide variety of tiles, porcelain flooring, terracotta, swimming pools, shop façades and kitchen ceramics, as well as everything related to the bathroom. We offer leading brands such as Saloni, Keraben. Peronda, Hansgrohe, Fanal Ceramics and Gala Distributors. You have been in the market for 43 years. What have been the main changes during that time? In relation to products and their presentation in the showroom, there have been many changes over 40 years. To begin with, previously a tile was displayed in bulk and by itself, but today it is surrounded by a well-planned and well-lit environment, so that it approaches the actual reality of our target client’s home. In relation to services and added value accompanying products, over time information and technical and personalised advice has improved, facilitating completion of the overall project and its eventual transportation, whereas this was not included or valued highly previously. As for the target client, greater attention is paid to their experiences and sensitivity. Undoubtedly, the introduction of the internet and virtual reality, and the option of online sales, has been one of the great challenges for our sector.

How and when was Decorbaño founded? It was founded in 1977 by the parents of this family business. Since then, in Estepona and the surrounding area, they have fulfilled the wishes of clients to create a home, a shop, a business, terraces, façades and swimming pools using the latest materials and the finest brands in the market. Forty-three years ago we started with a small showroom in Avda. de España in Estepona. Today, we are still here and ensuring good-quality work... that is our calling card and the guarantee we offer clients.

How does Decorbaño stand out compared with other companies in the sector? We have four decades of experience and evolution, adapting to our customers’ wishes. We showcase quite a different and special range of products, with more than 80 bathrooms and about 2,000 square metres of display space, where we work every day to keep it updated with latest designs. In addition to studying and researching international customs that are becoming increasingly incorporated into our lives, we provide continuous opening hours from 9am to 8pm. Furthermore, thanks to our long-standing links with the industry, we are able to take advantage of the loyalty of brands that have become essential for bathroom decoration and general project construction.

How has the business evolved over the year? With a lot of hard work and effort, we settled in the Estepona industrial estate, and currently we have five warehouses and about 2,000 square metres of showroom space, as well as an independent factory area offering services and products for all budgets.

BESPOKE VILLAS in Benahavís Article supplied by Atlas Group

LEADING COSTA DEL SOL CONSTRUCTOR PARTNERS WITH BELGIAN PROPERTY DEVELOPER Atlas Group continues to gain international contacts in the field of luxury property, with new builds in Los Flamingos. The construction company has been recruited by Belgian Caenen Group to deliver three bespoke, high-end villas in the prime area located in Benahavís. Caenen Group is a leading property player in Belgium and was founded in 1966. The company has over 12 real estate agencies, including Bond Estates S.L., which is the Spain-based luxury real estate division. As part of Caenen Group, Caenen Capitol Fund was founded to issue bonds to private investors and asset managers, and deliver pension funds to invest in land with development potential. The group is always on the look-out for opportunities, and Spain is one such location of opportunity. Always seeking creditworthy partners and maintaining a diverse real estate portfolio, the company invested in the plot in Los Flamingos and set to work looking for a reputable builder. Atlas Group was chosen to take care of the entire construction of each of the three villas, including the whole construction project, the swimming pool and the garden. Optimising the project from the architect and creating a cost-efficient project has meant work has already begun in full force and the properties will be completed in early 2021. They will be available for sale through Bond Estates.

152 MARCH & APRIL 2020

Christophe Burrick, Partner of Bond Estates, said selecting Atlas Group to bring the construction to fruition was a no-brainer, “After an extensive study of the market and comparing different construction companies, we chose to work with Atlas Group. As top quality is the main concern of Bond Estates, Atlas Group’s flexibility, professionalism and many years of experience in luxury villa building convinced our management to employ their expertise.” Mike Gregory, General Director of Atlas Group, said, “We are working in parallel with our client to ensure a great project. Sharing Bond’s view of quality, our team have a track record of producing luxury properties and we are excited to see the finished result.” The properties feature a warm aesthetic of wood integrated into the architecture. Blending large terraces and fluid open spaces, the properties will maximise the stunning views across open golf greens and down to the horizons of the Mediterranean, and they have environmentally friendly qualities. Marbella Architecture is Evolving in 2020 Clean lines, cubic design and white-washed villas... A familiar vision on the Marbella landscape these last few years, with the surge of modular-style architecture. But recently Marbella and the Costa del Sol has welcomed a new style of architecture; remaining contemporary and with all the modern comforts but properties have more and more injections of wood, stone and an aesthetic mix of materials to break up the cubic shape and blend with the Mediterranean landscape in a natural way. TREND 1: MIXING NATURAL MATERIALS Sleek wooden pergolas, vast stone walls and exciting build structures which break away from the typical square mould are becoming more common, especially in the luxury market. Imagine the aesthetic qualities of selected walls wrapped in the rough edges of stone, or striking wooden pergolas springing from the build to frame exterior seating areas. TREND 2: FLUID LIVING SPACES Integrating the interior areas and outdoor spaces to benefit from the incredible Mediterranean climate... Smart window glazing can create a special connection to the natural landscape outside and adding glass that runs the entire width of the wall can blend the indoor/outdoors and make the interior living areas seem larger than they actually are. TREND 3: HIGH QUALITY AND ECO-FRIENDLY Architecture and construction are being shaped by EU regulations, and by the end of this year the industry has strict targets to build “Passive Houses, including the integration of renewable energy and improving energy efficiency. When it comes to architectural influence, the architect must consider all of these points during the design process, such as the orientation of the build, to aid heating and cooling, the roof overhang and the overall size of the property.

Intergift in Madrid

154 MARCH & APRIL 2020

More than 700 companies and brands showcased their new collections for the 2020 spring-summer season at the 77th edition of Intergift. Held in February in Madrid, the fair highlighted latest advances and trends in decoration, furniture and home accessories, as well as renowned textile design, wallpaper and wall coverings brands. This year, 11 countries were represented at the fair, organised by IFEMA: Germany, Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Spain, United States, France, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal and United Kingdom. Considered the largest event in the decoration and gift sector in Spain and Portugal, Intergift 2020 comprised 40,000 square metres of exhibition space, with products from leading companies in their respective market segments. Sophisticated new collections featured the use of gold, velvet and fine and delicate finishes, as well as elaborate designs highlighted by warm and inviting lines that are easy to integrate into any space: homes, shops, hotels, restaurants‌ Sustainability and the positive use of resources was a common theme among the exhibitors. This was especially showcased in the production processes for

all types of decorative objects, with companies seeking less contaminating solutions for materials, and a longer useful life. Among many other ecological options, exhibitors presented products using natural fibres such as linen, jute, cotton, silk, hemp and wool, and wood from sustainable sources including poplar, cedar, cypress, French oak, beech, walnut, maple, ash, chestnut and cherry. Also popular was recycling wood from old houses, roads, etc. Decorative objects on show were made with recycled plastic as well as natural grass blinds, artisan mirrors featuring natural materials such as esparto grass, carpets made from fishing nets collected from the ocean, and ecological candles created with virgin beeswax or soy wax. Dedicated exclusively to professionals, Intergift was held in conjunction with the international costume jewellery and accessories fair Bisutex and the international urban and trend jewellery and watch fair MadridJoya. www.ifema.es

MAISON&OBJET in Paris

156 MARCH & APRIL 2020

Coinciding with its 25th anniversary in 2020, Maison&Objet is dedicating both Paris editions (January and September) to the same “(Re)Generation” theme. The aim, say exhibition organisers, is to “give visitors the chance to get to grips with the consumer behaviour displayed by generations Y and Z, which is both intriguing and unsettling in equal measure”. The first edition in January was assisted by style consultancy Nelly Rodi and explored the level of engagement these new “meaning-driven consumers” exhibit. A specific itinerary flagging up eco-friendly brands had already been launched in 2019. For the 4-8 September edition, Maison&Objet will focus its spotlight on “how these digital natives are an augmented generation, raised on a diet of the internet and social media”. Meanwhile, in January, the “What’s New?” exhibits staged by Elizabeth Leriche, François Bernard and François Delclaux “explored the way consumers are bringing meaning, nature and virtuous materials back into their homes – all themes close to the new generation’s heart”. According to Maison&Objet, this shift in consumer behaviour was at the forefront of everyone’s minds at the international décor, design and lifestyle trade fair. It began with the hotel and restaurant trade, with Maison&Objet putting together a dedicated itinerary covering furnishings, tableware, cookware, lighting, textiles and fragrances, all addressing that industry’s specific needs in terms of safety standards, accessibility and solidity. www.maison-objet.com

The Wonderful World of Plants...

INDOORS By Alia Babapulle

158 MARCH & APRIL 2020

I have been talking at length about plants and flowers for the outside. But what about those who have a small balcony or terrace and love to see plants inside? Let me say something which has been bandied about for years. Plants do cleanse your homes, but they do not detoxify as much as we have been led to believe. Look at these: English Ivy reduces airborne fecal matter, particularly helpful in the bathroom, and it also combats mould levels. Water generously and give it at least four hours of sunlight a day. Snake plants in a bedroom release oxygen at night and filter the air of formaldehyde, xylene, benzene, toluene and trichloroethylene. Do not overwater. Spider plants, tremendously strong, battle toxins including CO2 and xylene. If you have house pets, it is one of the few houseplants non-toxic to animals. Re-pot the tiny spiderettes and grow a whole bunch of new plants. Aloe Vera is used for all kinds of burns and cuts, and it will purify formaldehyde and benzene found in floor finishes, benzene and detergents. Pop it in a sunny location and don’t water it too much. Of course there are many more: Weeping Fig, Chinese Evergreen and Red-Edged Dracena, which I find particularly pretty, to name but a few of the hardy cleansers. Houseplants can be used in many settings, as a centerpiece, a focal point or just by being pretty. Your choice is extensive – always ask your garden centre what they recommend. Plants can be used to highlight a particular scheme or focus attention somewhere and also disguise an ugly space or architectural feature. I have placed a large Ficus Benjaminus in an odd corner between chairs and it looked splendid. With such versatility that houseplants can provide, you can let your imagination run riot. Houseplants are a valuable and very decorative accessory which can stimulate new and imaginative schemes. Every decision made about an interior is inspired by something, even if we are unaware of the influence. An enormous bank balance is not needed to create a calming atmosphere in your home. A home without plants or flowers loses a lot of atmosphere. Any space with a living plant feels alive and welcoming. Plants are one of the cheapest ways of injecting colour and vitality into a room and create an atmosphere of their own which would suffer without them. For a room with a strong identity or a blank space which needs a style of its own, plants will do the job perfectly. A modern scheme needs strong plants and a scheme which is softer requires the frondy type of plant in keeping with its mood. Don’t forget all the wonderful perfumed flowers too, Jasmine being used frequently inside and outside. If inside, make sure it has plenty of sunlight and don’t overwater. Gardenias, scented Geraniums, Hyacinths, Tea Rose Begonias and Lavender, Roses can all make your home smell wonderful while your other plants keep your air clean. Now, what could be better than that? Wellness-Focused Design at Studio Apostoli

Since its launch in 1997, the philosophy at Studio Apostoli has been “wellness, first of all”. According to the Verona-based Italian studio, this philosophy is applied to architecture, interiors and product design sectors around the world where it exports its projects, including the United States, Russia, the Middle East, China and elsewhere in Europe. It highlights “a plurality of declinations: well-being as compositional harmony, as experiential quality, as technological perfection, as sustainable aim, as choice and use of appropriate materials, as capacity to understand the context and make it as a long-term economic feasibility program”. The company has a team of 60 professionals specialising in distinctive areas and following the holistic and interdisciplinary approach of its founder, Alberto Apostoli. His aim, says Studio Apostoli, was to create a professional group capable of going far beyond traditional rules of architectural design”. Over more than 20 years, Studio Apostoli has carried out over 1,000 projects including hotels, spas, offices, shops, residential complexes and villas, providing architectural, engineering and interior design, as well as conceiving furnishings, products and accessories, designed specifically for each project. “From large to small scale, well-being is therefore expressed through an integrated design methodology and evolves continuously, thanks to the technological innovations and the international experiences gained by the frm.” Alberto Apostoli has also communicated his knowledge through conferences and educational activities, including philosophical, historical, economic, sociological and artistic. www.studioapostoli.com

ASTON MARTIN Vantage Roadster

Open Road HL68.indd 164

27/2/20 19:41

Aston Martin drivers have always had a special affinity with convertible sports cars – and the famous brand is just as keen never to disappoint them. The new Vantage Roadster will certainly enhance their open-top motoring thrills. As Aston Martin president and CEO Dr Andy Palmer notes, “For many, driving with the roof down is the true definition of the sports car experience as it truly brings your senses to life. Vantage has always delivered the purest of thrills, but in Roadster form that adrenaline rush is set to go to the next level.” Joining the Vantage Coupé, launched in 2018, the new convertible model delivers the classic Aston Martin blend of potent performance, outstanding dynamics and everyday usability. “Convertible sports cars are often seen as compromised when compared to their coupé equivalents,” concedes Aston Martin chief engineer Matt Becker, “but the Vantage Roadster remains absolutely dedicated and true to its mission of delivering precise, agile and expressive handling dynamics combined with stonking straight-line performance. And, of course, there’s the added dimension of driving a great-sounding sports car with the roof down.” Powered by Aston Martin’s 4.0-litre twin-turbo 510PS/685Nm V8 engine and mated to an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission, the Vantage Roadster accelerates from zero to 60mph (100km/h) in just 3.7 seconds and is capable of 190mph (305km/h) with the roof raised. Weight increases by just 60 kilograms compared with the Coupé thanks to a new, lighter Z-fold roof mechanism and optimised exterior and chassis revisions throughout. According to Aston Martin, careful development of structural shear panels and chassis components ensures the Vantage Roadster “retains the strong dynamic ability and sporting character achieved in the Coupé with no com-

promise to feel or refinement”. Sharing the same Adaptive Damping, Dynamic Stability Control, Dynamic Torque Vectoring and Electronic Rear Differential, the Roadster benefits from specific dynamic refinements. These include a bespoke tune for the rear dampers, Adaptive Damping System software and ESP calibration. A choice of Sport, Sport + and Track chassis modes – tuned specifically for the Roadster – gives the driver control of its dynamic character and behaviour. As for the design of the body, the tautly tailored fabric hood features a compact powered Z-fold mechanism that ensures rapid operation (lowered in 6.7 or raised in 6.8 seconds at speeds of up to 31mph-50km/h). The Vantage Roadster roof is said to have “the fastest full operating cycle of any automatic automotive convertible system”. A low stack height provides Aston Martin’s design team with the latitude to create a seamless rear profile with minimal impact on the Roadster’s luggage space. With a boot capacity of 200 litres, it is possible, for example, to stow a full-sized golf bag and accessories. The launch of the Vantage Roadster coincides with a range of new options introduced across the Vantage range. To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Vantage nameplate, Aston Martin is introducing the company’s iconic “vane” grille as an option, available on both the Coupé and the Roadster as an alternative to the track-inspired “hunter” grille featured on the Coupé from its launch in 2018. There is also a new range of optional alloy wheel designs in a choice of finishes, plus a manual 7-speed transmission offered as an option on the Coupé, having initially only been available in the limited-edition Vantage AMR.

A HIP HOTEL IN BARCELONA’S

Cosmopolitan City Centre OD BARCELONA

The OD Hotels group have five establishments within their portfolio, all situated around Spain – three in Ibiza and one in each of Mallorca and Barcelona. All are design-led boutique hotels with a focus on connecting those who visit them with the area in which they are located. Earlier this year, we visited OD Barcelona to learn more about their concept, and with this in mind they gave us a comprehensive, and very welcome, recommendation of what Barcelona had to offer… First of all, OD Barcelona, which was nominated as one of the top-10 sustainable hotel development projects in Spain at Re Think Hotel 2017, is perfectly positioned in the heart of the Eixample district of the city, close to Passeig de

Grácia, Plaza Cataluña, Sagrada Familia and Casa Battló. So there is little need for taxis, making it a perfect weekend stay as you can visit many cultural hotspots within just a stone’s throw of the hotel. Our bedroom was a good size and open-plan, with sleek wooden floors, a large comfortable bed with good-quality bed linen, modern illuminated wardrobes and a handy desk area for those who need to work. The connecting bathroom was contemporary in its design, with a relaxing rain shower and fresh white stone flooring. Our room was located on the fifth floor, which happens to be where their Sky Bar is located: a bar and stunning outdoor pool area covered in decking with

stylish sun loungers and armchairs where guests can relax while looking out over the city. Our visit was over a long weekend and on the Thursday we decided to dine in their restaurant, which features an open-kitchen concept serving an interesting and varied menu comprising dishes creatively presented and well-balanced. Later that evening we were treated to their “Burger Meets Gin” night held in a stylish bar area next to the reception. The night was full of fun, with glamorous artists painting on easels on the upper level of the bar – an interesting touch that attracted much attention. On the lower level various DJs played upbeat music to a funky and sophisticated crowd (who seemed like regulars) as well as hotel residents, creating a great atmosphere that was clearly appreciated by all. Sunday nights are also apparently not to be missed, with a Sunday brunch from 12pm to 4pm and live performances in the evening every couple of weeks, so the hotel team make great efforts to entertain guests. We were given a welcome pack and decided to explore the city. We visited the Casa Batlló on Passeig de Grácia, which was just a few minutes’ walk from the hotel. This awe-inspiring building was designed by Antoni Gaudí and is considered to be one of the artist’s masterpieces – a must-visit. The famous Basílica de la Sagrada Família, also designed by Gaudí, is another interesting tourist site where you can take an audio guide and a tour around this formidable temple and its towers with incredible views over the city. Also recommended, and just up the road from the Basílica, is the Park Güell, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with delightful botanical gardens, pathways and architectural features. After our enriching cultural injection, we decided to pay El Nacional a visit for a more gastronomic experience. This large and heaving culinary establishment offers different areas where you can enjoy drinks and try delectable dishes originating from around the Iberian Peninsula in an ultra-chic environment. For foodies, El Nacional is a real treat but do also pay a visit to El Mercado de Boqueria, a popular tourist landmark situated on the famous La Rambla, where you can take-in the ambience of this large and vibrant food market selling a wide range of good-quality local produce. Barcelona is a colourful city and just an hour and a half flight from Málaga. Depending on the time of year, flights tend to be quite inexpensive (usually under €100) so it’s a great city to visit for a quick weekend getaway. As for OD Barcelona, this hotel is beautifully designed, offers a friendly and helpful service and is situated in a great location. Marbella’s Turkish Delight Ottoman Restaurant & Lounge

Nueva Andalucía is firmly establishing itself as a gastronomic haven on the Coast, with exciting new restaurants opening all the time. The latest was Ottoman – a Turkish restaurant situated in Calle Los Jazmines, just down the road from the heart of La Campana. With Turkish restaurants in Marbella being few and far between, we decided to pay them a visit to try out some of their dishes…

Owner Arif Gultekin is a young and vibrant Turkish entrepreneur who has lived in Sweden for much of his life. Now he has opened Ottoman and it has already been quite a hit with the locals. Arif brought over his chef from Turkey – who has worked in the industry for over 35 years. They pride themselves on their authenticity, with every dish made from scratch and staying true to traditional recipes with the likes of kebabs, Turkish cacik, stuffed peppers, Lahmacun (which is like a Turkish pizza with minced meat, tomatoes and herbs) and baklava, baked every day. The menu has many meat dishes, with the mixed grill a favourite for many, but there are also numerous vegetarian options to choose from if meat is not your preference. Another popular meal at Ottoman is their khavalti, which is a Turkish breakfast (literally translated as “before coffee”) that is offered between 12pm and 3pm from Friday to Sunday. It is a mezze-style meal comprising 17 different dishes for only €15 per person. Prices on the main menu are just as reason-

able, with starters averaging €9 and main courses €16. When you enter the restaurant, you are met with young and friendly faces who are passionate about their work and are delighted to provide advice about the menu. The decoration is contemporary and cosy, with a stunning bar at the far end of the restaurant, large velvet dining chairs and ambient lighting, as well as intimate booths, ideal for groups. You can relax on sofas outside on their modern terrace and there are shisha pipes so you can enjoy a truly authentic Turkish experience (available after 10pm). Wine Notes ···

The Parker

Legacy By AJ Linn

There can be no wine lover anywhere on this planet who has not heard of Robert Parker. This small-town lawyer who became the most famous wine critic in history arouses mixed feelings. People love him or hate him. Almost by accident he discovered he had a natural aptitude for being able to categorise the tastes of any red or white wine. Ostensibly, by holding a few sips in his mouth for a few seconds, he was capable of analysing all its qualities – and defects. To appreciate what this meant at the time we need to go back 45 years to when the average American was beginning to discover that there was more to life than Coca Cola, Miller Lite and jug wine. At the time the home market was served mainly by Californian brands, although attention was gradually being drawn to products from across the Atlantic, particularly Bordeaux and Burgundy. If you were new to wine in those far-off days, you would have asked in the store what the numbers were next to the price labels. They were “Parker Points”, without which, as the more honest would admit, people had no idea what wine to take home or order. Born in Baltimore, in 1947, Robert Parker Jr practised as a lawyer until 1984. Six years earlier, he had launched a newsletter, the Baltimore-Washington Wine Advocate. Parker was unknown back then, so his system of scoring wines from zero to 100 became firmly established, although all the real action was in the 90-100 band. Wine lovers bought his magazine and, although Parker was never seen as anything but a very average businessman, it brought in enough money to enable him to visit the world’s wine regions. Parker’s publication – now “The Wine Advocate” – became famous when he recommended the “superb” 1982 Bordeaux vintage. In doing so he went head-to-head with other experts, who believed it to be over-ripe. Parker stuck to his guns and was eventually proved right, by which time his unpretentiousness had endeared him to many, with remarks like, “When I started in 1978 the best Spanish wine, Vega Sicilia, was not imported into the USA. Wine by the glass was not available anywhere, and sommeliers, with their black leather aprons and chains, looked more like sexual dominatrix.” (Symposium of Professional Wine Writers in Napa) He would later describe low-alcohol wines as “anti-Californian, anti-New World and Eurocentric…”. and he would be less modest as he described how

the daughters of winemakers were offered to him on his overnight stays at wineries through France. Parker eventually sold control of his business amid allegations he had surrendered to commercial interests. In exchange for $15 million (reportedly $10 million net after commissions) he obtained a new partner – the owner of Singapore’s biggest wine importer – and through a series of subsequent deals the publication Parker established is now part of the Michelin Guide group. In 1999, President Jacques Chirac signed a decree appointing Parker a Chevalier dans l’Ordre de la Légion d’Honneur, and in 1993, President François Mitterrand made him a Chevalier dans l’Ordre National du Mérite. In 2002, Parker was made a Commendatore (Commander) in Italy’s National Order of Merit. For better or worse the legacy of Robert Parker does not represent a landmark in the evolution of the wine trade. Parker’s personal taste was always for heavy, high-alcohol reds. This style is now overwhelmingly discredited, as the drinking public turns to lower-alcohol categories and more delicate tasting wines.

Fine Wining Restaurants can be a fickle business for some. Two businesses on opposite sides of the same street selling the same product – for example – might have vastly different outcomes, and there is little doubt that the professional approach pays dividends. Lateral is a catering group with 18 establishments inaugurated over 20 years (Madrid, Sevilla, Zaragoza, Barcelona, Valencia, Córdoba, Málaga, etc). The approach is original and unconventional and seems to work. Not really restaurants or bars, so the best description would be luxury super-tapa/ pinchos joints, with the best raw material and, the holy of holies, very reasonable prices. Marbella’s newest fashionable eatery is in a refurbished classical edifice in the Plaza de los Naranjos, and it is open all day. Lateral Group is involved heavily in several “solidarity” projects.

WHAT’S ALL THE FUSS

About Meditation? By Rachel Garrod

When I ask clients how they relax they will often tell me they might read a book or watch a good film. And while these are perfectly good ways to spend our leisure time it’s not quite what I was meaning. I’m wanting to know how often that person spends in a period of deep tranquillity or deep relaxation. The type of relaxation where our minds are calm and settled and feelings of anxiety or stress are reduced. Unless you have practised specific techniques, achieving this “quiet mind” state of relaxation can be difficult. But fortunately, like other skills, we can learn this deep relaxation. A now well-known method is “Mindfulness” meditation. This helps us to become more focused on the here and now, enabling us to pay particular attention to the present moment and allowing us to dismiss any unwelcome distractions. Increasingly scientists are learning about the benefits of meditation, and the effects on the brain are impressive. Meditation has been shown to improve productivity, focus, concentration and even our memories. It also has a positive effect on anxiety. In one study using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (showing us areas of the brain that are active during different functional tasks) researchers were able to show a reduction in an area of the brain called the amygdala. The amygdala is responsible for processing emotion. In particular it is associated with our fear response and the hormones produced such as cortisol and adrenaline. Adrienne Taren, who led the research, reported that after an eight-week mindfulness course MRI scans showed reductions in the amygdala and an increase in the pre-frontal cortex (the part of the brain that helps in rational and logical thought processes). This means essentially that the mindfulness meditation practice had helped to reduce our more primal responses to stress and instead allowed more rational thought processes to become dominant. So if you are finding things a bit stressful, or would just like to experience the feeling of deeper calm, please get in touch and I can help you get started on your journey. Biological Healing

...and Good News for Depression Sufferers Medical Minutes by John Schieszer

DO STEM CELL TREATMENTS FOR SHOULDER AND ELBOW INJURIES REALLY WORK? Don’t believe all the hype you read about stem cell treatments here in Spain. In some cases, it may be a total waste of money. The utilisation of stem cell therapies for augmentation of tissue healing has far outpaced the supporting scientific and clinical data, largely due to aggressive marketing that has led to widespread and often inappropriate use of cell therapy approaches, according to researchers. Two critical reviews in the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery examine the current status of biologic approaches for common shoulder and elbow problems. The authors discuss areas where the current evidence base is weak or controversial and recommend where further studies are required. There is significant interest in biologic treatment options to improve healing and reduce symptoms more rapidly in elbow and shoulder injuries, such as osteoarthritis (OA), tendinopathy, ligament injuries and other inflammatory conditions. However, there is uncertainty among physicians and patients about what works and what does not since many of these treatments are still unproven. While the authors caution that the future outlook is positive, the clinical data for their use is currently limited. A large number of patient-specific factors affect the composition and biologic activity of products, including age, sex, medical comorbidities, concomitant medications, and genetic and epigenetic factors. These variables, as well as unpredictability of the biologic product, are then added to the variability of the underlying pathology being treated. The authors review several biologic agents, including platelet-rich plasma (PRP), bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) and mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) derived from adipose tissues, in order to provide medical specialists and their patients with up-to-date clinical data and stimulate further research in this important and growing area of musculoskeletal medicine. They conclude that these treatments have great potential based on laboratory studies demonstrating a positive effect of these materials on the basic biology of tissue healing. However, the clinical data for their use in both shoulder and elbow pathologies is very limited. The authors point out that a serious limitation is the significant variability and heterogeneity among these biologic formulations. Dr. James B. Carr II (of the HSS Sports Medicine Institute, Hospital for Special Surgery, in New York) and Dr. Scott A. Rodeo (HSS Sports Medicine Institute, Hospital for Special Surgery and Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York) evaluated the basic science and clinical evidence for the most

commonly used biologic agents for treating common shoulder pathologies such as rotator cuff tears, shoulder OA and tendinopathy. Rotator cuff tears occur in more than 20 per cent of the general adult population, with a progressively higher incidence as age increases; while shoulder OA has been estimated to affect up to 33 per cent of individuals over 60. “There is a critical need for strategies to improve rotator cuff tendon healing following surgical repair and for methods to reverse the progressive muscle atrophy that occurs in patients with rotator cuff tears,” said the authors. “The shoulder is therefore an area in which biologic agents are especially appealing.” NEW STUDY CONFIRMS ANTIDEPRESSANT USE IS SAFE Some comforting news to consider if you suffer from depression. A new study has found that antidepressants are generally safe. By assessing evidence from 45 meta-analyses, which combined the results from many studies, the researchers did not find strong evidence of adverse health outcomes associated with antidepressant use. The findings have been published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry. There has been a sharp growth in antidepressant use worldwide. These drugs rank third among prescribed medications and fourth among sold medications. It is estimated that up to 10 per cent of American adults take at least one antidepressant. However, the safety profile of antidepressants has remained somewhat controversial. Meta-analyses combine the results from many studies, and some have found strong associations between antidepressants and some adverse health outcomes, while others have not. “As far as we know, this is the first study to assess the safety and adverse health outcomes associated with antidepressant use on such a large scale considering real-world data.” said study lead author Dr. Elena Dragioti, who is an adjunct senior lecturer in the Department of Medicine and Health Sciences at Linköping University in Sweden. “However, it is important to note that our study did not evaluate the efficacy of the drugs.” Researchers systematically assessed the evidence from 45 reviewed metaanalyses that included more than 1,000 observational studies. “We found that all of the adverse health outcomes reported in observational studies that were supported by strong evidence were actually probably due to the underlying psychiatric conditions for which antidepressants had been prescribed, rather than the antidepressants themselves. Most of these studies also suffered from several biases, such as a lack of randomisation,” said Dr Marco Solmi, who is a visiting researcher at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience at King’s College London in England.

Sony World Photography Awards

FRESH PERSPECTIVE on Contemporary Subjects

Masahiro Hiroike (Sony World Photography Awards)

The organisers have unveiled the finalists and shortlisted photographers in the professional category of the 2020 Sony World Photography Awards. Their work will go on display as part of the awards exhibition at Somerset House in London from 17 April to 4 May. The winner of the “Photographer of the Year” award will be selected from the group of professional finalists and announced during the awards presentation ceremony in London on 16 April. Now in its 13th year, the professional competition is aimed at rewarding “a remarkable body of work for technical excellence and a fresh perspective on contemporary subjects”. More than 345,000 images from 203 territories were submitted in the 2020 awards’ four competitions, including 135,000 in

the professional competition’s 10 categories – the highest number of entries to date. A new “Environment” category was introduced in 2020, ”in recognition of the growing importance of this topic in both fine art photography and photojournalism”. According to the World Photography Organisation, which organises the awards, “This year’s finalist projects engage with a wide array of topics, photography techniques and presentation methods, covering personal subjects and observations, inventive approaches to storytelling and shedding light on little known but critical issues.” www.worldphoto.org

D2 ART COMPANY

EXCLUSIVE AND PERSONALISED

“Custom Art” in Marbella Interview with Denis and Damir Koric Photos by Julia Roder

What is D2 Art Company? D2 Art Company is an innovative company that offers “custom art”, in addition to a high-quality framing service. We offer our services at very competitive prices, especially taking into account the personal treatment we provide. We are highly experienced within the art world and serve both private clients and professionals from the world of design and decoration locally, nationally and internationally. The objective of our work is to enrich our clients’ design projects with style and quality. We realised that there was a lot of demand from both professionals and the general public, who wanted to find “custom-made art” at reasonable prices. It is very usual that the client had a space and they were looking for a work that accommodated their taste in size, style, colour and price, all of which led them to them devote a great deal of time and energy finding the desired artwork.

What services do you offer with your concept of “custom art”? D2 Art Company offers the possibility of creating personalised paintings, adapted to the client’s taste, taking into account the exact measurements and colours in accordance with their needs and wants. We offer our advice, without any commitment. We like to visit the space in which the client is designing to take measurements, recommend artistic styles and offer the appropriate type of support for the artwork, as well as suggest different options to achieve the best harmony within the space. Our stock includes a large and varied selection of paintings, photographs and sculptures, in distinctive artistic styles (abstract, realism and figurative, among others), as well as different techniques, ranging from hand-painted work to giclée (reproductions in limited and numbered series, as we are also publishers). All this can be done on different materials such as paper, flexi-glass, dibond (aluminium), canvas, wood, etc. Together, these options enable us to make “custom art” for our customers.

176 MARCH & APRIL 2020

Art HL68.indd 176

27/2/20 19:52

We receive in our showroom customers with very clear ideas who tell us, for example, “I want a picture on canvas in an abstract style in green and orange, 150cm x 200cm”, or “I would like a photo 200cm x 150cm of an image of New York in sepia with a picture of my daughter inserted”, or “I want a portrait of me in this artistic style”. They even ask for practical solutions such as, “I need to cover a fuse box; can you custom-make the door for me?” Dealing with these requests, we either show them examples of what we have already done that is similar to their request, or we simply create their idea. We can create virtually whatever picture and sculpture our client wants. Who is behind the D2 Art Company project and its “custom art”? D2 Art Company is a project of ours – two brothers. We and our families have been living on the Costa del Sol for more than two decades. D2 Art Company was inspired by our long professional career of more than 20 years in the art world, as dealers and gallery owners (Mada Primavesi Art Gallery, Madrid). We have promoted contemporary art nationally and internationally, advising collectors, organising exhibitions and representing recognised and emerging artists, as well as organising exhibitions with important institutions such as Caixa Forum and Caixa Nova. One of our main artists (Berber) is in a Tate Gallery collection in London. We have always continued to offer advice as dealers but, after seeing the demand for “custom art”, we decided to open D2 Art Company with its personalised service, also based on our considerable experience in the art world. You have a wide range of custom art within your portfolio. From where do you source all of this? The large selection of made-to-measure paintings we have at D2 Art Company comes from years of collecting works of art, with legal and contractual agreements, ranging from the use of images and their copyright to contracts with artists related to their works, both original and limited editions. All the

limited edition works we have at D2 Art Company are exclusively available from us (except for some photographs). Only we have what we offer clients. During the years you have been with D2 Art Company, what are some of the kinds of work you have undertaken? We have done a bit of everything, from a private client looking for a painting for their house, to complete or partial projects with professional interior designers and architects, in private houses and apartments – as well as offices and businesses on the Costa del Sol and elsewhere in Spain. For example, a large number of our works are installed in the Nobu Marbella hotel. Also, we have participated in projects in other locations around the world including New York, London, Hong Kong, Amsterdam, Rome, Madrid, the Caribbean... Where is the D2 Art Company showroom located? We are right at the beginning of the Ronda road, just passed the San Pedro de Alcántara industrial estate, at the turn-off heading to La Quinta Golf. We have very convenient parking at the door, where we have a sample of everything we offer to create “custom art” together with framing services. What do you enjoy the most about your work? The satisfaction of finding and/or creating “custom works of art” for our clients, and seeing the joy on their faces when they feel the harmony created for their home, workplace or business. In summary, our slogan is: “quality art at very competitive prices”. D2 Art Company C.C. La Cancela de la Quinta, Local 9-5, San Pedro Alcántara (Marbella) Tel. Bright Real Estate Development

Spain’s Most Energy-Efficient and Sustainable Villa Developed by Bright and designed by UDesign, Villa Alcuzcuz is the first luxury residential villa in Spain built under the demanding standards of PassiveHaus (Passive House). The project has already been recognised in the International Property Awards as “Best in Spain” and “Best in Europe” in the “Architecture Single Residence” category. Energy efficiency is part of the essence of the Passive House concept, developed in the 1980s in Germany in order to build houses with minimum energy consumption. In Europe there are only 25,000 homes built under these strict energy standards, 101 of them in Spain, including Villa Alcuzcuz as the only one on the Costa del Sol. “However,” explains Bright, “all of these have dimensions of less than 300 square metres built. Bright and UDesign were attracted by the challenge of designing a residential villa where they could show that luxury and ac-

climatisation of large spaces (1,155 square metres) are not at odds with sustainability. “Villa Alcuzcuz was born from that challenge: the first large, luxury home that respects the environment and is built in accordance with the Passive House Regulations and Standards and, in addition, stands out for having exquisite design that is arranged around a large central glass living space with privileged views of the Mediterranean Sea and the Strait of Gibraltar.” Pol. Designa’s shop is now slightly further down the Mijas Road. They have moved into Centro Nórdico, which is located just after Aldi in Mijas. “We have had a great start in Spain as a shop-in-shop store at Loft & Roomers,” says Johnny Thomsen, “but since they have now closed their business we had to find other premises. Due to Designa’s great momentum and success with both private and business customers, there was no time to waste, and the decision to move to the new premises was taken quickly. “There have been worried customers who thought Designa might have also closed the store. However, with the opening of the shop in the new premises, we would like to stress that we continue to offer kitchens, bathrooms

and wardrobes in top Danish quality at a great price.” Designa provide a comprehensive range of options in beautiful Scandinavian design, including installation and setup. “We have our own warehouse here on the Costa del Sol, which means that the delivery time is extremely short. If you are the type who prefers to set up and assemble your own kitchen, we can also easily offer this option. Then you just pick up your order in the warehouse at a price that can beat IKEA prices.” Centro Nórdico, Crta. de Mijas, Km. 4.5, Mjias Tel. DRAFTING A WILL IN SPAIN Alleviate Future Headaches for Your Relatives and Heirs Article supplied by Welex Lawyers & Accountants

If you are a resident of a country within the European Union and have properties in Spain, it may be in your best interest to grant a will signed by a notary in Spain. Although it is not compulsory, it is advisable. Below we present some advantages and benefits to having a will granted in Spain. 1. With the enforcement of European Regulation No. 650/2012 of 4 July, which regulates the competences, applicable legislation and execution of resolution and public documents in matters of succession, and the creation of a succession certificate at the European level, it is advisable to leave expressly designated by testamentary disposition which legislation you wish to be applicable to your succession, either the law of your nationality or the law of your last residence. A will in Spain would allow you to make these decisions clear prior to your death. 2. Even if you have a will granted in your country of residence or nationality, sometimes their interpretation and application in other countries can be misconstrued. In addition, your heirs must legalise your foreign will to prove that it is indeed your last one, which means that it must be translated into Spanish. Your heirs will also need to obtain the Apostille of the Convention of Le Hague. This process can be very cumbersome, we assure you. 3. Even if you have a will granted in your country of residence or nationality prior to 17 August 2015, it may not be accepted according to the European regulation because it might not clearly determine which law is applicable to your succession, specifically in regards to the law that governs in the location of your most recent residence or the law of your nationality. Do not hesitate to visit our offices so that we can clarify this issue for you by reviewing your existing will. 4. When you are granting a will in Spain, you clearly designate who your heirs are, which clarifies the limitation to assets which are located in Spain and

ensures compliance with the regulations of the country of your nationality or residence, depending on which law you have chosen to apply to your succession. 5. The monetary savings of obtaining a will in Spain is another advantage. Not having a will can require your heirs to initiate legal proceedings to determine the line of succession. On the one hand, it must be decided who is entitled to the assets of their inheritance, and, on the other, it must be determined in what percentage according to the law applicable to your succession. The cost of having a will drafted in Spain is insignificant in comparison to the difficulties and costs that your heirs may face if they do not have one. 6. Keep in mind that a will in Spain can dramatically reduce the paperwork and waiting time that your heirs will have to endure after your death. As a side note, we feel compelled to remind you that if you have assets in Spain your heirs must pay the inheritance tax within six months from the date of your death. 7. At our multilingual law firm in Marbella, we can advise you so that your will meets all of the requirements in Spain. You only need to provide us with the name of your heirs, the law that you want your succession to be governed by, and the way in which you wish to distribute your assets as long as you comply with the regulations of your nationality. We do advise you to limit the contents covered by your Spanish will to those that are found in Spain. Your will elsewhere can cover your other possessions. Our office will provide you with a draft of your Spanish will written in a double column format, which includes both the Spanish version and the version translated into the language of your nationality. 8. Finally, when you have reviewed your will completely, we will accompany you to a notary to get the will signed. Do not forget to bring your passport to this meeting as it is required.
