EDITORIAL It is now pretty clear that the coronavirus pandemic is going to be affecting our lives into the foreseeable future. Nevertheless, there are many reasons to remain positive – and patient. Hopefully, over the next few months medical advances, including COVID-19 therapies and vaccines, will alleviate our health concerns. It is also to be hoped that quicker, cheaper and less physically intrusive virus testing measures will enable us to travel with greater convenience and comfort, which is especially important for the many Costa del Sol residents who shuttle between traditional family bases in northern Europe and second homes in southern Spain. In the meantime, our ever-growing attention – apart from remaining safe and healthy – is focused on our home and its rapidly transforming role in our lives. As an article this summer in Architectural Digest (“Four Considerations Architects Will Need to Make When Designing Post-COVID Homes”) noted, many homes have become a “quarantine sanctuary” and new norms need to be incorporated. According to Dan Carlin, founder of telemedicine company WorldClinic and a former senior medical adviser for MIT’s School of Architecture, the four “re-architecting” considerations should focus on food, water, energy, environment and medical care. First of all, sanitising stations… Think of a residence in terms of quarantine zones, he says: red, the outside contagious world; green, the virus-free living space inside; and yellow, the transition zone, which is the critical area. “Anterooms – or mudrooms that have been converted to include a sink – have become popular as a way of protecting the inner sanctum from possible contamination.” The next consideration is anti-viral fabrics and surfaces... “Specific virus-repelling materials are particularly useful in the kitchen… Architects should focus on replacing countertops that can harbour the coronavirus, especially those made of materials that are pitted or grooved.” Then comes ventilation… Nancy Ruddy, founding principal at CetraRuddy, advocates using natural airflows and breezes rather than air conditioning (HVAC) systems. “It’s not healthy to be in a hermetically sealed box. Having fresh air coming in and out is very, very important.” She suggests creating huge, operable windows and placing them strategically to create a natural cross-breeze. Finally, nature and wellness… and the importance of creating green spaces. Ruddy notes that people are increasingly filling their homes with indoor plants, and adopting the trend of introducing a natural flow between the indoors and outdoors. Whether it be an increasing reliance on working from home, or spending more time dining in rather than out, the home has certainly become much more of a sanctuary this year. And that means enhancing its comfort levels and general functionality. Once again this issue, our comprehensive Décor & Design section is full of creative ideas, cutting-edge concepts and stunning furniture showpieces that will, we hope, help you stay abreast of developing home lifestyle priorities in 2020.

The Beating Heart

OF THE HOME The living room is a reflection of your style when visitors come into your home, so it is the one area you have to get right style-wise as well as comfort-wise. The general rule when furnishing a living room is that, if the room is tight on space, your furniture should not be too large – allowing you to move around easily without banging into tables. On the other hand, if the room is spacious, a small sofa and coffee table will be swallowed-up in a large space, so furniture that is proportional to the size of the room is especially important. Make sure there are enough side tables to rest drinks, books and table lighting, while storage solutions such as cabinets and shelving keep the room organised and offer easy access to objects you might need while lounging. Here we look at some of the best ideas around‌

This year Knoll presented the innovative Matic sofa. Created by Piero Lissoni, the concept of this sofa is to appear like a platform suspended in space. The low linear seating is enhanced by capitonné details, joined by armrests and backs that can be shaped thanks to an internal mechanism that offers structural support and comfort (www.knoll.com).

When It’s Simply

CURTAINS When it comes to curtains, aim high – and this means not only in quality but also in height. Curtains can make a room look larger than it really is simply by raising their height. Plains hung high add drama and make the room feel spacious and luxurious. Curtains with a bold print, just like a feature wallpaper or rug, add a focal point to the room and serve as an artistic statement. However, this can only work in a large room as patterned curtains in a small room tend to make the space look even smaller and too busy. Here are some ideas…

Eye-catching

WALLS

People have gone crazy over wallpapers in the last few years, and rightly so as they are an easy fix to give a room an instant facelift – with so many options available. Florals, botanicals and exotic animals have become a firm favourite and, although designs depicting nature will always have a place in the world of wallpapers, we are now finding rich luscious colours in bold striking patterns taking over the market – adding drama and mood to a living space. Some rooms, particularly if they are small, simply cannot support a feature wall. Therefore a plain design or a textured wallcovering will suffice and can still add ambience. Tiles have come a long way, with a number of interesting finishes available, so there is a lot to consider when sprucing up your walls…

The Raffia Madagascar vinyl wallpaper collection from Élitis offers a wide range of neutral as well as bold colours, including this one which combines several rich and vibrant tones. Élitis is available from Siesta Interior Design in C. Plaza in Nueva Andalucía (www.siestainteriordesign.com) and Nomad Studio One in Edif. Don Amaro II in Sabinillas (www.nomadstudioone.com).

ARE YOU RUG READY? Rugs can really transform a room, not just aesthetically but also acoustically. If the room is full of colour, go for a neutralcoloured rug. Vice versa, if the space is very washed out, a colourful rug can bring the room together and add a touch of life. Size is important, as a rug that is too large can make the room feel small. Also, consider the rug’s role… if it is going to take a lot of footfall, invest in a good-quality rug that will last longer under the duress.

Dining In Style Dining in is certainly the main trend for 2020, so why not invest in a chic dining table and chairs which will last you for years and impress your guests. The set even doubles-up as a workspace, now that working from home is also becoming the new way of life for many. Wooden tables are a popular choice as they are timeless, durable and fit into any style of home. Consider the shape of your table – extendable tables are ideal if you unexpectedly have to entertain more than your usual quota of guests. If space is limited, round or oval tables are generally a better option, depending on the shape of the room. Here are some ideas…

Outdoor furniture is not just for the summer months when living in southern Europe: it is an all-year-round necessity. The trend of bringing the indoors to our outside living space hasn’t relented – and hooray to that! Creating a cosy and welcoming seating area on a patio or terrace allows us to relax for longer while enjoying our natural outdoor surroundings, which is healthy for both the mind and the soul. With this in mind, outdoor furniture companies have brought out innovative materials to withstand the ravages of the sun, rain and wind, so investing in good-quality materials is a win-win situation. More and more furniture companies are incorporating wood into their collections, and teak has become an especially popular material due to its durability and its ability to blend into the natural outdoor environment and provide a relaxing aesthetic. Accent cushions, outdoor lamps, rugs and throws are all great ways to add some personality and cosiness, so don’t be afraid to accessorise and maximise the look of your outdoor space.

SWITCHING UP THE KITCHEN As we enter into the winter months, and with Christmas just around the corner (where did the year go?), our kitchen starts to take on more importance – whether you are entertaining guests over the festive period or simply cooking-up comforting homemade winter dishes for those cosy nights in. If your kitchen needs a facelift, it can be somewhat daunting knowing where to start. However, it doesn’t need to break the bank or involve a fleet of builders to spruce the space up a little. Simply changing façades and tabletops can be quite transformative. Installing good storage systems keeps surfaces free of clutter and creates an organised aesthetic. Though kitchens obviously have to be functional, don’t be afraid to add a touch of personality such as a rug, plant, lamp, painting or vintage mirror. This gives the space a less clinical look, which is sometimes the case in home kitchens.

This beautiful kitchen from Ballingslöv has Fenix doors that are made from the exclusive Fenix laminate, which features a contemporary matte finish and is very easy to maintain and clean. The matching countertop, in the same colour and material as the doors, offers fluidity and a well-coordinated overall aesthetic – and it comes in four colours: white, beige (as shown here), graphite grey and black. Ballingslöv is situated in CC. Plaza in Nueva Andalucía (www.ballingslov-marbella.se) and is available through Design Strand in Playas del Duque in Puerto Banús (www.designstrand.com).

LIGHTING ···

BRIGHT Ideas

Lighting can make or break a room. When deciding on lighting solutions, it’s not just about the decorative value that the lamp is going to bring to the space. You should also consider its size and the kind of light that it will emit. For example, an oversized chandelier can drown out a room, while a light that is too small can look lost. Lamps offering directional light are great for reading or highlighting a specific feature such as a painting or plant. Decorative lampshades that have shapes cut out of them filter the light magically, spreading whimsical silhouettes across the room. Lamps provide ambience and warmth to a living space, so choose wisely for each specific room and the result can be quite transformative.

The Eris lamp from LZF emanates an ethereal and minimalist beauty when it is illuminated – and also when it is switched off. Designed by Mayice Studio, Eris comprises an original borosilicate glass orb, hand-blown by master glass-blower Eduardo Garuti, and a wood veneer tube that contains the LED light source. LZF is available through Siesta Interior Design in C. Plaza in Nueva Andalucía (www.siestainteriordesign.com) and Acoola in Pol. Ind. San Pedro de Alcántara (www.acoola.eu).

MAKING BEDTIME

PRIME TIME For obvious reasons, your bedroom should be the most peaceful and calming area in your home. So it’s your responsibility to go all-out to ensure that this room offers you the best night’s sleep possible – every time you retreat there. A good tip is to keep it simple. By this we mean absolutely no clutter; choosing simple colour palettes for your fabrics, which complement each other with no clashing colours; and, last but not least, a bed and mattress that are perfect for your body’s needs. Here are some ideas…

THE NEW JENSEN CROWN WITH ALOY® 3.0 SPRINGS The Jensen Crown is their most exclusive model, with double mattresses and six different layers to give a superlative night’s sleep. This model has a highly innovative spring system including their most advanced Aloy 3.0 spring system in the reversible mattress. Beneath this you will find their Exact Comfort Adjustment, making it possible to adjust the firmness of the bed at the touch of a button. The Majestic topper that comes as standard with Jensen Crown is made of Innergetic® Sonocore Latex. Its open cell structure makes it very breathable and damp-proof. The padding plate is both perforated (providing optimal ventilation) and profiled, giving a softer and firmer side. Latex inhibits the growth of bacteria and dust mites resulting in a cleaner and more hygienic bed climate. Innergetic® Sonocore Latex is environmentally-friendly and highly durable. So, what is the Aloy 3.0 system? It is a system patented and exclusive to Jensen. While you sleep, this intelligent spring system takes care of your entire body, including the hips, which – just like the shoulders – are a vulnerable part of the body. The tendons surrounding the hips make them extra sensitive to pressure when we lie on our sides. With Aloy 3.0, the hip zone in the spring system has an improved load capacity while allowing the hip to sink even further into the mattress. For those who prefer to sleep on their back, Aloy 3.0 also provides comfortable back support. A separate headboard has been designed specifically for this bed. It consists of five panels which sit closely with the Eicon Wall bedside tables integrated into the headboard. The bedside tables, like the legs of the bed, are available in three finishes: whitewashed, oak and black. Jensen is situated in Pol. Ind. Nueva Campana in Nueva Andalucía (www.jensenstore.com). 100

The new Happy D.2 Plus bathroom range is timelessly contemporary and versatile, with rounded corners and elegant finishing. The wash basin appears like it is floating and is available with a matching vanity unit or metal console, in an above-counter version or as a classic wash basin in combination with a pedestal or siphon cover. The bathtub has been designed for comfort and comes with an optional neck-rest. Toilets and bidets are available as wall-mounted, floor standing and back-to-wall options, both with and without the SoftClose seat function. The toilets can also be combined with the SensoWash® Starck shower-toilet seat. Duravit is available through Decorbaño in Pol. Ind. Estepona (www.decorbagno.com).

As much as we want our bathrooms to be as hygienic as possible, it doesn’t mean we want them to look sterile. Bathrooms are often overlooked when considering a reform, as we tend to spend the least amount of time in this area of the home. However, the trend of turning bathrooms into veritable spa sanctuaries is growing. Wet rooms, deep whirlpool bathtubs, integrated sound systems and even toilets that wash and dry you (fully-equipped with LED lighting no less) are taking the market by storm. Adding personal touches such as furniture items, rugs, showstopping waterproof wall coverings and botanicals immediately gives the space personality and will transform your bathroom into a place where you want to spend more time. When building a dream property, it is vital that you have the right team in place to complete the project on time, within budget and to the best finish. However, many underestimate the importance of using a building company able to recommend and work with a range of partners to completely integrate the project and form a team to build every aspect of the home. When building here on the Costa del Sol, it can take all of the stress out of creating the home by choosing a construction company able to coordinate and project manage all of the details – everything from the home intelligence system, kitchen and bathrooms to the swimming pool. The design, construction and installation process, from the start to the finish of the property, is largely dependable on communication and the relationship between all of the involved companies. The partnership between Atlas Group and Illusion is a prime example. Illusion is an independent company specialised in the design, installation and maintenance of lighting, audio-visual and control projects. The team assists clients from a very early stage to develop a project and oversees the works during the design and construction phases to achieve the best result. Over the years Atlas Group has developed a reputation as a highly knowledgeable and dedicated construction company, adept at delivering tailor-made construction, bespoke interiors and landscape projects throughout the Costa del Sol. Unlike other builders, Atlas Group employs every member of the team, choosing technical experts in each field who are committed to delivering the highest quality builds for our customers. Atlas Group and Illusion have a long history together, working on numerous projects over the years and, as such, they have both earned a reputation for completing homes to an outstanding finish, just as the client dreamed of. So why should you select a building company able to integrate all aspects of the property? TRUST When you hand over your project to the construction company, you want complete confidence that all aspects of the build will be taken care of. You want a builder able to work together with the kitchen supplier to ensure that one of the main rooms in the home works in harmony with the construction, both from a design and a functionality perspective. ULTIMATE HOME COMFORT AND EASE OF USE Create the best living experience... The ability to enter the property with a single gesture or word and set up the lighting, music and temperature is all possible, and Illusion are market leaders in this high level of home automation. Intelligence systems are making homes easier to control. Achieving what you want, whether it is to close the blinds or set the perfect temperature, can be done in a simple and intuitive way, which allows you to focus on what’s important. To be able to coordinate this with the home builders, to ensure every aspect works perfectly together, is where a strong business-to-business relationship is key in boosting the end user’s quality of lifestyle. ENERGY PERFORMANCE There is an undoubted demand to build homes that conserve energy and reduce running costs. Atlas Group and Illusion work together to optimise the property and ensure the best possible performance, where it is desired. In the build of your project, trust is crucial, and it is vital that you have a good relationship with your build partner. Choose one passionate about both their work and your project and you won’t be disappointed. Atlas Group CC Atenea, Estepona Tel. (+34) 951 272 140 / www.atlas-group.es HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Bilbao-based IDOM was the main winner at this year’s World Design Awards. An association of independent professionals working in the fields of consulting, engineering and architecture, the company picked up four awards, for its San Mames Stadium project (first prize in the sports & recreation category), Lima Convention Centre (cultural), University of Bambey (institutional) and Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council (public building). In addition to being the firm receiving the most awards, IDOM was also the only Spanish company to be recognised at this year’s ceremony. According to the IDOM, the San Mames Stadium was conceived as “an architectural piece that should manifest itself with strength, boldness and respect for the buildings that surround it. The project gives added value to circulation spaces, providing them with spatial qualities and intensely relating them to the city and its surroundings. This relationship materialises with the introduction of large window openings with red frames.” The ETFE panels that make up the façade give the stadium (with a capacity for 53,332 spectators) a focal point of colour; while the design meets the requirements of an “Elite” category stadium, the highest UEFA classification. The complex incorporates complementary uses such as a museum, shopping area, restaurant, cafetería, and event, meeting and conference rooms. The Lima Convention Center design had three main objectives: to be a cultural and economic driving force; to be a meeting place rooted in Peru’s collective culture; and to become a singular, flexible and technologically advanced architectural landmark. It extends over 15,000 square metres and accommodates 18 multi-functional convention rooms, as well as underground parking, kitchens, restaurant spaces and a cafetería.

Undertaken by the Senegalese government, with financial support from the World Bank, the expansion of the University of Alioune Diop in Bambey is part of an ambitious plan to enhance the university environment. Four new buildings have been designed to house the Training and Research Unit, with an architectural program including classrooms, a 500-seat amphitheatre, laboratories, computer rooms and offices. The design was conditioned by the hot and humid climate, and intensive classroom use and high occupancy. The façade and roof feature a double ventilated envelope, with the circulation routes protected from solar radiation. Low maintenance spaces and minimal energy consumption have been complemented by a phytosanitary water purification system using lagoons and rainwater infiltration ponds. The Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council office building project was prompted by a need to regroup various technical and social departments, previously dispersed around the city. The building adopts the curved and dynamic shape of the old town, displaying touches of classic Vitoria bay window architecture through the use of infinite vertical planes of perforated sheet metal. One of the key functional aspirations was to “enhance the citizen-public administration relationship”. To that end, the user service area is located in a large central space, lit by overhead skylights, while the building also integrates abundant passive and active sustainability and energy saving measures. www.idom.com Photos supplied courtesy of v2com HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Design Showcase HL71 - Reserva Sotogrande.indd 126

23/10/2020 17:40

El Mirador is a gated community of six exquisite modern villas, perched above La Reserva Club in Sotogrande. As the name suggests, these properties are built to capitalise on the phenomenal views across the estate and golf course and out to the Mediterranean Sea, with floor-toceiling windows, tiered terraces, infinity pools and extensive outdoor living space. Buyers have already snapped up three of these stunning properties and now Villa Dorado has been completed and is ready to welcome you! The La Reserva team and architect Manuel Ruiz from ARK architects have been very excited to show the world this exceptional new villa, and they gave Home & Lifestyle a sneak peek to share with you. The villa’s contemporary design, sharp lines and cool stone finish are softened by sensitive landscaping to fit effortlessly into its natural setting. Inside you will find large rooms, with floor-to-ceiling windows framing the view and looking out onto beautiful gardens and terraces which connect you with the great outdoors. There are six spacious bedroom suites and an enormous open-plan living and dining room, which opens out to the terrace for dining and relaxing al fresco. We loved the indoor swimming pool, spa and cinema room, while the outdoor swimming pool is a wonderful place to relax and soak up the sun. The whole villa is being furnished by the highly regarded Pedro Peña, well known for their cutting- edge interior designs and original, exclusive style. They have a loyal following in Marbella and around the world due to their use of clean lines, contrasting colours, large-scale pieces and top-quality materials. The team will be working their magic over the next few months and leaving the villa fully furnished and ready to move into by one lucky owner in January 2021. With the setting, incredible architecture and interior design, there’s no doubt that this will be a spectacular property perfect for year-round living or luxury holidays in the sun. This really is a dream home for a family living in a privileged location.

LA RESERVA CLUB LIVING Owners of villas at El Mirador also gain the key to the La Reserva Club lifestyle and exclusive access to its state-of-the-art facilities and concierge services. They will have an 18-hole championship golf course on their doorstep, restaurants offering local cuisine and exquisite sushi, a tennis and pádel club, health and wellness facilities and, of course, the only beach club in the hills throughout the spring and summer months. The team are creating an exclusive community for their owners to allow them to enjoy access to everything they could wish for, while living a private, discreet lifestyle in a beautiful setting. Sotogrande is a unique destination which has been attracting the world’s elite since 1962. Drawn to the area by its world-class sports facilities, stunning scenery and low-density building, many have never left, and the Sotogrande community is unlike any other. Families are drawn by the quality of life, exceptional international school and range of outdoor activities on their doorstep. After school, kids can choose from sailing, golf, tennis, horse-riding, polo and rugby within just a few minutes’ drive. Especially in today’s uncertain times, buyers value the space, privacy, discretion and security which can be found in Sotogrande. If you would like to find out more about living in one of the La Reserva Club properties, contact the team to request an information pack by emailing lareserva.residencial@sotogrande.com or calling (+34) 856 560 922. They can arrange a private tour of Villa Dorado and El Mirador, or show you all the property options including The Seven, The 15, Lagoon Villas and The Golf Villas. NOVEMBER & DECEMBER 2020

First Person HL71 - Otero.indd 128

23/10/2020 17:53

Tell us a little about yourself… Born and raised in northern Spain, I studied design at the University of Navarra, and after graduating worked at several top studios in Spain. I have always focused on the renovation of luxury villas and the re-design of commercial spaces. As a result of my experience over the years, and the success of my completed projects, I decided to set up my own design studio. One day Rubén Otero presented me with the challenge of running the group’s business unit, specialising in renovations, turnkey projects and interior decoration. Now after five years, and 25 years of experience, I am still thriving in forming part of the team I lead. What services are provided by Otero Design? Otero Design is a company that carries out renovations and interior decoration, specialising in rehabilitation projects, giving new life to your home or business, and creating comfortable and functional spaces that are welladapted to your particular lifestyle. We focus on both the residential and business segments, especially in the hospitality sector. How would you describe your team? We are a creative and innovative team, fully receptive to latest trends, as-

pects that are clearly reflected in our work. We combine experience with training, in addition to collaborating with a wide range of suppliers and artisans developing exceptional spaces that are in tune with the key needs and preferences of our clients. What are the main advantages of undertaking a home or business renovation? On occasions, carrying out a renovation is a matter of necessity, prompted by structural problems, or wear and tear of materials. Or it might simply be the need for a change that refreshes the style and optimises space distribution. Often, a renovation is an excellent option for adding value to the property and thus increasing its investment potential. Whatever the motive, we put at clients’ disposal a multi-disciplinary team of professionals able to provide solutions for any situation. Otero Design Bulevar Príncipe Alfonso de Hohenlohe, Urb. END OF THE YEAR

D R AWS TO A CO N CLU S I O N By Alia Babapulle

As always, I wish you all the very best for 2021; it surely cannot be as maddening and confusing as 2020. Please remember your plants could take a battering with the weather in the winter months, so try to protect them if needed. Pruning back, always above a node, has to be done soon. Mulching with a good compost for a garden and or a terrace is very important. Cover plants in pots with a light plastic sheet if the rain is torrential so that they do not get damaged. Move them around; they like it and so will you as they bloom again next year. This article is about something different, however. Cut some branches off trees if you can and store them somewhere dry. Collect pine cones and dry them as well – driftwood from the beach also. Sprayed in gold, silver or a colour, they can become the centrepiece for your season’s decorations, mixed together with baubles. On the mantelpiece, if you have one, hang plenty to give a sumptuous look. Not only are you clearing the garden but also using nature to make a grand design. With plenty of scented candles mixed in among them, they are a perfect way to decorate. Candles should be high in a candle holder or in a deep glass container so they will not cause a fire.

Your table can also benefit from the heady smells of pine and cinnamon sticks together. For example, wrap a cinnamon stick with natural raffia around the table napkin and push a pine cone, sprayed or natural, into the wrapping. For a rustic look, this is perfect. There are hundreds of ways to decorate a table. I have, for many years, posted all sorts of décor on my Facebook page (@AliaBInteriorDesign) and have had many happy hours of chasing up new trends. There, if you scroll back, you will see so many photos and comments of mine, and I hope you find something which pleases you and is different to your normal décor. As we face a year ahead of great uncertainty, never neglect your plants. They can give you peace, and remove negativity simply by thinking about them and not about the world we live in. Stay safe for 2021, and I hope you will all be back with me once more. Alia Babapulle Interior and Exterior Designer Tel. (+34) 616 670 975 aliabdesigns@live.co.uk

In 1995, five McLaren F1 GTRs dominated the 24 Hours of Le Mans, finishing first, second, fourth, fifth and 13th. Twenty-five years later, McLaren Special Operations has been inspired by that performance, in what is considered the world’s toughest endurance race, to design five customer-commissioned McLaren Senna GTR LM models. Remarkably, it was the first time McLaren had raced at Le Mans, and the motorsport achievement came only three years after its initial production road car – the McLaren F1 – had been introduced. The track-only McLaren Senna GTR was the fastest-lapping car McLaren has ever made outside Formula 1. The five new McLaren Senna GTR LMs each feature a bespoke, handpainted livery that either replicates or pays tribute to the designs of the 1995 cars, and which required more than 800 hours of painstaking craftsmanship. 134

Special permissions were granted by brand owners such as Gulf and Harrods, as well as by Le Mans organiser the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO), to recreate logos and trademarks. The roof of each car features an authentically recreated scrutineering sticker, the only piece of vinyl in the livery. According to McLaren, the relationship between the McLaren Senna GTR LM and its F1 GTR predecessor is further showcased by a dedication plaque on the inner surface of the carbon fibre tub denoting each car’s one-off status and its original F1 GTR chassis number identifier. The cars also wear etched dedications to their Le Mans “twin”, including the date of the race, the names of the three race drivers in the car and the position they finished. Officially presenting the five exclusive models, McLaren Automotive CEO Mike Flewitt said, “The incredible cars of the McLaren Senna GTR LM col-

lection are an exceptionally fitting way to celebrate the 25th anniversary of our Le Mans victory in 1995. That achievement is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest endurance racing performances of all time, but for McLaren its importance was even greater because it demonstrated an immediate and undeniable connection between the racing DNA of our brand and the start of our road car journey.” The visual power of the liveries and the meticulous detailing are complemented by other exclusive features and technical enhancements that “elevate it above the already exceptional track car on which it is based”. The McLaren Senna GTR was engineered to have the highest power-to-weight ratio of any McLaren at the time, and aerodynamically optimised to be able to generate more than 1,000 kilograms of downforce. Enhancements to the GTR’s twin-turbocharged, 4.0-litre M840TQ engine include valve spring retainers made from metal matrix composite (MMC) to deliver a 65 per cent weight reduction, higher grade steel for the valve springs, and hand-polished, CNC-ported cylinder heads. Recalibration of the powertrain electronics releases power of 845PS – an increase of 20PS over the McLaren Senna GTR – and revised torque curve characteristics that deliver more torque at lower revs and enable a rev limit set closer to 9,000rpm than the “soft limit” of 8,250rpm. The GTR’s Inconel exhaust system has been further enhanced by the addition of specially designed LM twin-exit pipes; and OZ Racing, which supplied the wheels for the McLaren F1 GTR, created a bespoke, five-spoke GTR LM wheel design. As for the interiors, exclusive features include a racing steering wheel with anodised gold gear shift paddles and control buttons; titanium nitride pedals with LM logos; leather door-pull straps and lightweight carbon fibre racing seats complemented by bespoke headrest embroidery; and an MSO six-point racing harness coloured black with body-colour pads. “We wanted to make a major statement with this collection,’” said McLaren Special Operations managing director Ansar Ali. “In creating these incredible cars to the requirements of some of our most discerning customers, we are showcasing the astonishing array of talent we have within MSO – a team that can visualise, design, produce and deliver products that really do take your breath away. The McLaren Senna GTR LM project has been a labour of love for nearly two years; we have gone to great lengths not only to perfect the engineering aspects of the cars, but also to gain cooperation from brand holders and partners to maximise authenticity.” HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

The long-standing Tango Restaurante in Puerto Banús, owned by dynamic brother-and-sister duo Luciano and Paula, has been the town’s most popular Argentinian dining establishment for many years. It has seen a number of famous faces pass through its doors during that time, as well as many loyal locals who come back time and time again. So, what is the secret to Tango’s success? We pop down to see what’s happening at this vibrant restaurant that everyone is talking about, to find out for ourselves… On entering Tango, we were immediately greeted by the warm smile of owner Paula and her friendly members of staff who showed us to our table. We soon realised that booking a table is imperative, especially on a Saturday night which was when we visited, as we had an early booking and it was already starting to get busy. The décor is welcoming and cosy, with a contemporary take on an Argentinian theme, soft lighting and lots of nooks for more intimate dining – as well as larger open areas with grand tables to accommodate groups. We shared the Provoleta to start, which was perfectly cooked and nicely presented. Naturally, we wanted to try their meat so we ordered a rib-eye steak each for our main courses. We both agreed they were fabulously flavoursome and juicy, and the steaks came with either a bowl of crispy fries or a jacket potato with a wide selection of sauces and side dishes available if we desired. Their menu was surprisingly varied, with not only every cut of meat that you could think of but also the likes of burgers, fish, pastas and salads, as well as a wide range of pizzas cooked on their firewood grill for a distinctive taste that really can be compared to no other. The wine menu has been carefully selected and there is an impressive range of options. In addition to the main indoor restaurant, there is an outside dining area on a charming little terrace decked in wood at the rear of the restaurant,

ideal for those who prefer to dine al fresco. There is also a large room above the main restaurant area that provides a panoramic view over the streets of Puerto Banús, where you will find an avant-garde bar and large dining area which serves as an extension to the main dining area below, and is perfect for private events. They have live entertainment every Saturday night as well as a DJ upstairs to keep the ambience upbeat and fun. On the night that we visited, there was a Madhatters Tea Party held upstairs, with mesmerising actors in whimsical costumes, make-up and lifelike masks performing magic tricks and fantastical balletic acts – a truly original act, certainly for Marbella, which topped-off the evening spectacularly. The live entertainment changes regularly, so to find out more details on what is happening it is a good idea to refer to their social media pages. The Tango siblings work tirelessly to provide a welcoming and all-encompassing experience when visiting their establishment. You can’t give them credit enough for their dedication in offering high-quality ingredients to diners at very reasonable prices in a wonderful setting. Their excellent service – and just the fact that the brother and sister combo are quite simply kind and hard-working professionals in a highly-competitive market – is obviously why Tango has amassed such a loyal following over the years. CREATIVE CULINARY IDEAS F O R T H E F E ST I V E S E AS O N Helle Barlebo, from Chili Gourmet Catering, offers two delicious recipes to prepare for dinner guests at home during the forthcoming Christmas-New Year period...

CRISPY ROAST CHICKEN (4 people) INGREDIENTS: 1 fresh ecological free-range chicken 2 lemons 4 large garlic fresh thyme & oregano 2 batatas (sweet potatoes) SPICE MIX: 2 teaspoons baking soda 4 teaspoons Maldon salt 1 teaspoon grounded 5-pepper mix 1 teaspoon paprika (or pimentón dulce) 1 teaspoon cayenne chili powder 1 teaspoon oregano olive oil (preferable in spray) PREPARATION: It took quite a few tests before I got my absolute favourite roast chicken just right, perfectly crunchy and tasty. This recipe might surprise you a bit because it includes baking powder which, it turns out, is good for quite a lot more than baking. The slightly alkaline mixture raises the skin’s pH levels, thus allowing proteins to break down more efficiently, giving you a crisper, more evenly browned result in the oven. Place the chicken in a big pan and give it a light spray with the olive oil. Take one lemon and poke several holes in it with a knife, so it releases lemon juice while cooking. Put the poked lemon, some crunched garlic, a bit of salt and the fresh spices into the chicken. Mix all the spices together and rub them onto the skin of the chicken. Our favourite garnish, fast, easy and tasty... Cut the top off a full garlic, make slices of lemon and cut the batata in half and carefully cut the inside of the sweet potatoes, before putting some olive oil, Maldon flake salt and pepper on top. Add some fresh spices and chili if you want an extra spicy touch. Place it all into the pan together with the chicken and bake in the oven at 200 degrees for about 50 minutes. 142

VANILLA & GINGER PICKLED PUMPKIN INGREDIENTS PRE-PICKLE: 1½ kg. fresh pumpkin 2 dl. vinegar BOILING-PICKLE: 1 fresh vanilla bean 1 fresh ecological lemon 2 teaspoons Atamon

1 lt. boiled but lukewarm water 1 teaspoon salt 1 lt. water 25 gr. fresh ginger roots 600 gr. sugar

PREPARATION: Clean and split across the fresh pumpkin, cut away all the hard skin and clean out the seeds from inside with a spoon. Keep the seeds for later, in case you want to grow your own plants, or slow-bake them in the oven for snacks or salad topping. Make five-centimetre slices of the pumpkin meat – or the size you prefer. Mix all the pre-pickle together in a bowl, add the sliced pumpkin and leave it to marinate for 24 hours in the fridge. Make sure the liquid covers all the pumpkin (a plate on top could do the trick). Prepare the boiling-pickle in a big pot with the water, sugar, Atamon lemon juice. Remove the skin of the ginger roots and cut them into slices. Open the vanilla and add both the seeds and the beans into the pot, then put it all to boil at high power. Remove and discard the liquid from the pre-pickle marinate, place the pumpkins in the boiling-pickle and leave them to boil for about four to five minutes. Carefully remove the pumpkins, vanilla beans and ginger, into some glass canning jars, which you have cleaned in advance with boiling water and given an Atamon-wash. Add the sugar, Atamon and lemon to the warm liquid and leave to boil for about 10 minutes. Carefully pour the liquid into the canning jars with the pumpkins, and close while they are still warm to seal. Leave at room temperature for about a month before eating. Once open, store in the fridge. The pickled pumpkins can last sealed for about one year – if you haven’t eaten them by then. Chili Gourmet Catering... by Helle Barlebo Tel. WINE TOURISM BACK ON THE AGENDA By AJ Linn

Wine tourism has taken a big hit this year for reasons that do not need explaining. However, it is climbing back into favour as protective regulations are being adopted in all bodegas offering visits and tastings. And since visiting a winery need not involve close contact with other people – and nor do vineyard tours present any problem – sampling wine inside a capacious bodega can even favour such activities. Enjoying a good lunch, as happens in many hospitable establishments, may be more problematic, but the measures that will be taken are no different from that of any restaurant these days. Winery visits are actually not a new ritual, as many believe. The Empress Eugenia visited the Alvear bodega in Montilla and Jerez’s Gonzalez Byass bodega in 1862. Spain’s last but one king, Alfonso XIII, was a welcome guest at Codorniu, Domecq and Bodegas Franco Españolas in Rioja. It has always been assumed that wine tourism is a courtesy on behalf of the winery, giving faithful customers the opportunity to taste in situ, as it were, the wines they drink at home and in restaurants. This is only partially true, although that is certainly how it all started. These days many smaller bodegas cannot survive without paying visitors, owing to the fact that the epidemic has already caused them to take a hit on their profits from regular wine sales. Wine tourism has become such a fixture that there are some Spanish universities offering degree courses, which sounds like a very enjoyable study choice if you are a wine buff. It is true nevertheless that Spain has lagged behind other countries in developing wine tourism. While national visitors numbered 2.4 million annually at a recent count, the figure for France in the same period was 15 million, and in one day (unrecorded as to which) 1.3 million tourists visited Italian bodegas. Apparently Spain’s wineries were offering tours many decades back but, as often happens in this delightful country, someone forgot to take into 144

account that these things need promoting, and it is not enough to put a “Visitors Welcome” sign on the door and then sit back and wait. Spain is catching up fast, however... taking as an example the wellknown Protos winery in Ribera del Duero. Last year it had 40,000 visitors at €11 per head. Add in what must be a substantial number of purchases from the on-site shop, and the income makes it all worthwhile. Obviously there are practical considerations. Outside the frenetic weeks of the grape harvest, it is easy to die of boredom in a bodega. Quite simply, there is little to do, and even the most reticent oenologist would prefer to spend the downtime chatting away to some inquisitive backpacker than mooching around a warehouse full of endless rows of barrels. There is no record of when the first bodegas opened their doors to visitors, but it was probably in Jerez de la Frontera around the 1950s. Back then it was possible to visit several bodegas each week for a year without repetition (there were hundreds of bodegas then). All for free! Although the average visit price in Spain is currently around €10, this is likely to increase soon with the building of show bodegas for the express purpose of attracting visitors. One that has just started construction in Rioja is a multi-million-euro investment where the actual making of wine is incidental. All the income will come from visitors’ pockets. Hopefully it will be a long time before Spain gets to the level of some Californian showplaces. At Napa Valley’s Castillo de Amarosa a visit costs €18,000, although this does include the “gift” of a barrel of wine for ageing plus 288 bottles of their best Cabernet Sauvignon, a leatherbound photo album of the tour, and a box of Monte Cristo cigars. On this side of the pond, France’s Duval-Leroy Champagne house lets visitors blend their own cuvée for the thousand bottles that will eventually be shipped to their home, for a mere €40,000.

SHOULD WE BE WEARING MASKS? By Rachel Garrod

The wearing of masks during this COVID-19 pandemic still seems highly contentious. A number of issues influence our compliance with mask wearing: ideology, knowledge and, of course, cultural norms. Japan and other Asian nations have habitually worn masks for many years, particularly when travelling on public transport. But, for us Europeans, the wearing of masks is associated with a loss of freedom. How can we respond normally with one another when we can´t see our facial expressions? Really, do they do any good? Are we all just being muzzled! Well, we are many months into this pandemic now and evidence that was not available at the start is now emerging. One of the early pieces of observational evidence came in June when two hair stylists who both wore surgical masks during work were diagnosed as having COVID-19. Although they passed the virus onto family members, the vast majority of their clients were free from it. As the pandemic continues we have been able to acquire more rigorous evidence. A review study from August (Leffler et al) found that weekly increases in mortality were four times lower in places where mask wearing was the norm or mandated by the government. It is, of course, difficult to separate the effect of masks from other preventative measures such as social distancing and hand washing. However, with animal studies we can more easily control these variables. Researchers from Hong Kong recently conducted a study on hamsters infected with COVID-19, using a mask barrier between cages as the proxy for mask wearing. Only about 25 per cent of the animals became infected when 146

the mask barrier was in place as opposed to two-thirds of the animals without a barrier. Some people tell me they are concerned about a build-up of carbon dioxide or a loss of oxygen with the wearing of masks. This will only occur if the mask is air-tight, which clearly a cloth covering/surgical mask is not. Oxygen enters the lungs as a result of pressure changes between the exterior and the interior of the thoracic cavity. A mask does not affect this pressure variable, nor does it stop us exhaling carbon dioxide. Some people with breathing problems may be exempt as masks can certainly exacerbate feelings of breathlessness – albeit without a drop in oxygen levels. On the whole it seems that masks do not so much prevent you from inhaling droplets as limit your expulsion of particles. There are even early suggestions that wearing a mask may reduce the viral load received and that in turn may reduce the severity of infection. With as many as 80 per cent of people now thought to be asymptomatic (contagious but without symptoms) this makes the wearing of masks even more important. So, you wearing a mask protects others and in turn they protect you. But this only works if we all wear one! AT-HOME TESTING FOR COVID-19 INFECTION Researchers in the United States have developed a new type of multiplexed test with a low-cost sensor that may enable the at-home diagnosis of a COVID-19 infection through rapid analysis of small volumes of saliva or blood, without the involvement of a medical professional, in less than 10 minutes. One feature of the COVID-19 virus that makes it so difficult to contain is that it can be easily spread to others by a person who has yet to show any signs of infection. The carrier of the virus might feel perfectly well and go about their daily business. A crucial part of the global effort to stem the spread of the pandemic, therefore, is the development of tests that can rapidly identify infections in people who are not yet symptomatic. Now, Caltech researchers have developed a new at-home 10-minute test. Previously, they had developed wireless sensors that can monitor conditions such as gout, as well as stress levels, through the detection of extremely low levels of specific compounds in blood, saliva or sweat. “In as little as a few minutes, we can simultaneously check these levels, so we get a full picture about the infection, including early infection, immunity and severity,” said lead investigator Wei Gao, an assistant professor in the medical engineering department at Caltech in Pasadena (California). Established COVID-testing technologies usually take hours or even days to produce results. Those technologies also require expensive, complicated equipment. Gao’s system is simple and compact. So far, the device has been tested only in the lab with a small number of blood and saliva samples obtained for medical research purposes from individuals who have tested positive or negative for COVID-19. Though preliminary results indicate that the sensor is highly accurate, larger-scale testing with realworld patients will now be required to determine its full accuracy. WALKING DAILY FOR A BETTER TOMORROW Grab your walking shoes. Just taking a daily stroll may do much more than you ever realised, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Two studies published this year showed that older adults may be able to live longer, healthier lives by increasing physical activity that doesn’t have to be strenuous to be effective. The studies, which were presented at the American Heart Association’s Epidemiology and Prevention/Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Health Scientific Sessions 2020, showed that older adults were 67 per cent less likely to die of any cause if they spent at least 150 minutes per week doing moderate to vigorous physical activity compared to those who did not engage in more than 150 minutes per week of moderate to vigorous physical activity. The new data also demonstrated that among the participants (average age 69) physical activity doesn’t have to be strenuous to be effective. The researchers observed that each 30-minute interval of light-intensity physical activities, such as doing household chores or casual walking, was associated with a 20 per cent lower risk of dying from any cause. Conversely, every additional 30 minutes of being sedentary was related to a 32 per cent higher risk of dying from any cause. This investigation evaluated physical activity levels of 1,262 participants from the ongoing Framingham Offspring Study. Participants were an average age of 69 (54 per cent women), and they were instructed to wear a device that objectively measured physical activity for at least 10 hours a day, and for at least four days a week between 2011 and 2014.

Researchers found that women who walked 2,100 to 4,500 steps daily reduced their risk of dying from heart attacks, heart failure, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases by up to 38 per cent compared with women who walked less than 2,100 daily steps. The women who walked more than 4,500 steps per day reduced their risk by 48 per cent. “Despite popular beliefs, there is little evidence that people need to aim for 10,000 steps daily to get cardiovascular benefits from walking,” said lead study author Andrea Z. LaCroix, who is the chief of epidemiology at the University of California in San Diego. “Our study showed that getting just over 4,500 steps per day is strongly associated with reduced risk of dying from cardiovascular disease in older women.” John Schieszer is an award-winning national journalist and radio and podcast broadcaster of The Medical Minute. Announcing details of the initiative, 1854 Media said, “While the global pandemic forces museums and galleries to remain closed, the film brings empowering photography into people’s homes around the globe. The images also translate into binary code and are beamed through the universe at the speed of light. These are messages which could continue on an infinite journey for the rest of time — or until another civilisation receives and decodes them.” Portrait of Humanity is a global initiative established by 1854 Media, publisher of British Journal of Photography, “as a movement that seeks to prove that there is more that unites us than sets us apart. Portrait of Humanity wants to get an insight into the lives of people from across the globe; to capture laughter, courage and sorrow, moments of reflection, journeys to work, first hellos, last goodbyes, and everything that happens in between. “Inspired by individuality, community and unity, it is a unique opportunity

for photographers to celebrate the many faces of humanity through the power of photography, and the 400 shortlisted images sent into space reflect this.” Described as “the world’s longest running photography title”, British Journal of Photography has been showcasing pioneers of the art form since 1854, through a monthly publication that “takes an international perspective on contemporary photography, focusing on fine art and documentary, and the cutting edge of editorial and commercial practices”, as well as international photography awards. Over the past decade, Sent Into Space has launched more than 500 flights taking images of the Earth from the edge of space. The company’s work encompassses industries conducting viral marketing stunts, advancing scientific understanding of the planet, testing cutting-edge satellite and avionics equipment, inspiring future generations of scientists, engineers and astronauts, or scattering ashes on a “breathtaking final journey”. Photographs are taken “in front of the ultimate backdrop of the curving horizon of our planet, the faint blue glow of our atmosphere and the black vacuum of space”. www.portraitofhumanity.co / www.bjp.photo/space HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

During a year when other large-scale design and décor events around the world have been forced to postpone their 2020 editions due to the coronavirus pandemic, Marbella Design was able to press ahead and open its doors at Marbella’s Palacio de Ferias, Congresos y Exposiciones from 24 September to 3 October. Speaking at the conclusion of the fair, executive director Carolina Abril said, “Marbella Design 2020 has been a clear demonstration that, with a lot of effort, professionalism, commitment and talent, you can achieve great things, even during the most difficult moments. The organisers would like to express our heart-felt appreciation to all the professionals, brands, sponsors and partners who have been with us this year.” A total of 20 professionals and more than 200 companies and brands participated in the 2020 fair, which had a special relevance bearing in mind the current situation. LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR

TO P I N T E R N AT I O N A L G O L F ACT I O N I N M A R B E L L A The 2020 Ladies European Tour draws to a conclusion in November, with the final event in Marbella deciding this year’s new Race to Costa del Sol winner. The Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España will be held at Royal Guadalmina Golf Club from 26 to 29 November. This will be the seventh time the Spanish Women’s Open has been held on the Costa del Sol, following Flamingos Golf (2010), La Quinta (2011 and 2018), Guadalhorce (2017) and Aloha Golf (2016 and 2019). Four years ago at Aloha, Marbella-born international star Azahara Muñoz became the first Spanish player to win the national open. A year later she successfully defended her title in what was an even more emotional victory, as Royal Guadalhorce is her home club, where she learned to play the game before turning pro and winning on both the LET and the US LPGA Tour. This year’s tournament has greatly enhanced status, offering a prize fund of €600,000 and being the final chance for players to improve their positions in the Race to Costa del Sol, the new name for the LET’s

At the Costa del Sol showroom, they explain, the objective is to “travel through the four cardinal points to bring to our exclusive clients the best of interior design made with the best elements available in nature, where each piece is unique and exclusive, no two are the same, and every single one has an enormous identity and character. Oriented towards a natural, bohemian, nomadic, rustic and exotic proposal, we have made the love of imperfection a philosophy of life.” The team at Sybartum exclusively choose exotic woods and furniture under ecological afforestation agreements. “All furniture and decorative elements include ecologically legitimate, legal and sustainable licenses.” Tel. DO YOU NEED A PROCEDURAL

LAWYER IN SPAIN? Article supplied by Welex Lawyers & Accountants

Are you acting as a de facto or de jure director of a company operating in Spanish territory or of a Spanish company? Do you believe that you have suffered an injury to your property or rights as a result of a criminal act committed by a Spanish company? Our procedural lawyers explain that it is possible that a company acting in a criminal way can be punished as criminally responsible for the commission of such acts. The initial regulation established in the 1995 criminal code excluded a legal (or juridical) person from being an active subject in a criminal act, embracing the “aphorism societas delinquere non potest” principle. Until 2010, the way to prosecute the commission of a criminal act implemented through a legal person was limited to a derivation of the responsibility of the commission of the criminal act through the administrators de jure or de facto of the legal person. Normative recognition is found in article 31 of the criminal code, which provides that “whoever acts as de facto or de jure administrator of a legal person or in the name or legal or voluntary representation of another, shall be personally liable, even if the conditions, qualities or relations that the corresponding figure of the crime or misdemeanour requires to be the active subject thereof do not concur, if such circumstances occur in the entity or person in whose name or on whose behalf it is performed“. This regulation made it necessary to act against the administrator of the Spanish company de jure, leaving the company itself safe from the need to carry out activities for unjust enrichment or any other means of safeguarding the civil action derived from the crime. Organic law 5/2010 of 22 June introduced a major modification in the criminal code of 1995 in order to make it possible for action to be taken against the legal person as criminally responsible. This legislative amendment also allows for the establishment of a punitive system consisting of fines and measures that may even include the dissolution of the company itself, without prejudice to the liability 154

of those who, as de facto or de jure directors, may have intervened by action or omission in the commission of the offence. The updated system also includes the obligation to establish mechanisms for the control and prevention of the commission of criminal acts through the corporate structure, reducing the responsibility of the latter or mitigating it, depending on the case. Our procedural lawyers in Spain can assist you both in demanding criminal liability from the legal person and/or the de facto or de jure administrator, and in filing complaints or lawsuits to demand criminal liability from the former.
