EDITORIAL As to be expected in an industry traditionally in the vanguard of contemporary trends, the European design and décor exhibition sector has moved sleekly online in response to the postponement of “presencial” events this year. The first major 2020 event to be affected by the coronavirus outbreak was Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan. Initially, the organisers moved the cutting-edge furniture fair from April to June, but later they decided to cancel this year’s edition and return from 13 to 18 April 2021, noting that the situation had “fundamentally changed”. The 2021 exhibition will mark its 60th anniversary, and for the first time all the biennial exhibitions will be held in conjunction with the main Salone: International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition, Workplace3.0, S.Project and SaloneSatellite. EuroCucina, FTK-Technology For the Kitchen and the International Bathroom Exhibition will also take place next year, together with Euroluce, which was already scheduled for 2021. In the meantime, professionals and home decoration enthusiasts can stay up to date with latest exhibition news at the fair’s website (SaloneMilano.it) Maison & Objet managed to hold the first of their traditional two annual exhibitions in Paris, back in January, but the September edition has been postponed – with exhibitors not returning in person until 22-26 January 2021. Until then, the MOM (Maison&Objet and More) platform, launched in 2016, is continuing to connect brands and nearly 400,000 international buyers as a virtual meeting place. The aim is to “create synergies” via the platform, with online visitors able to discover new collections in a “showroom format in the spirit of the show’s booths layouts”. This “spirit” is being highlighted by Maison & Objet at its Digital Fair, from 4 to 18 September. The online fair is divided into two complementary sections: Digital Showrooms on the MOM (Maison&Objet and More) platform for “atmosphere immersion” and “product spotting”; and Digital Talks and Much More on the Maison&Objet website (Maison-Objet.com) for “advice and inspiration”. The London Design Fair is going ahead as scheduled, from 12 to 20 September, but scaled down significantly from previous years. Announcing the festival’s continuation, the organisers explained in a press release, “In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, we have been looking hard at our options and have consulted our partners, the broad design community and the mayor’s office about London Design Festival (LondonDesignFestival.com) going ahead in September. “The overwhelming consensus is that it should, and that it is important the design community stands together in these challenging times… LDF 2020 will of course be different from any other. With very little, if any, international travel, it will be a festival for Londoners with a strong focus on the local. We are adapting the festival accordingly… Like everyone, we are planning greater online activity and are exploring new formats to present design and promote discussion.” It’s a different story for the World Architecture Festival and INSIDE World Festival of Interiors live event, both of which have been postponed from December 2020 to 23-25 June 2021, while remaining in Lisbon. In their place, organisers have announced the launch of WAFVirtual from 30 November to 4 December 2020, “where the worldwide architectural community can engage for a week of live content, special prizes, talks, panel discussions and networking opportunities – all for free”. The organisers said they had been closely monitoring the ongoing pandemic situation and had concluded that postponement of the live event (WorldArchitectureFestival.com) “makes more sense than prolonged uncertainty… The safety of our delegates, partners, suppliers and employees is of paramount importance to us.”

OUTDOOR SPACES When buying outdoor furniture and accessories for your garden, you are investing in a personal outdoor lifestyle and leisure experience. Consider the orientation of your outside area so that your main seating and dining area is not in direct sunlight. If you have no choice due to limited space, a shade solution is a must – whether it is a parasol, shade sail or pergola. It is always worth spending the money on good-quality materials for your outdoor furniture. After all, they have to take a lot of beating from the weather, so buy furniture made from innovative materials and they will last for years to come. To enjoy the outdoors during the evening, ambient lighting can turn your outdoor space into a magical oasis, lighting up your plants and water features and creating a relaxing ambience in a soft light. Firepits and outdoor fireplaces are also a great way to add a welcoming feel to your outdoor area – there is nothing more whimsical than a dancing flame whilst relaxing outdoors.

The Vertex sculptural slide from Splinterworks makes a striking artistic visual statement. Its mirror-polished stainless-steel finish reflects the natural surroundings, and it doesn’t oxidise like other metals. It actually reflects most of the sunlight and thermal energy, and its built-in water jets cool the slide and stop it from drying out in the sun (www.splinterworks.com).

M A K I N G A S P L AS H Now that we have all experienced the dreaded “lockdown”, spa companies are busier than ever as more homeowners have started to realise they need to invest more in their homes – which they have recently seen a lot more of. As buying a swimming pool can be expensive and sometimes a complicated installation, a hot tub is a more achievable purchase for the garden and is a lot easier to install. These bubbly little pools offer hydrotherapeutic benefits and are a fun way to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family.
Above The Elegant Pool and Swimspa is one metre 20 centimetres deep, and it comes with a heat-insulating cover and Balboa control system with anti-freeze and economy mode. The spa is equipped with 93 large counter-current jets, as well as nine jets. There is a day-bed and four seats that all have their own combination of large and small jets to create variety in the massage experience. Available from Nordkap Living in Mijas (www.nordkapliving.es). Opposite Page The award-winning Drop pool has technology enabling you to control the water temperature with your smartphone or tablet. It is specifically made for all-year round use and the built-in waterjets provide a truly holistic experience. Drop is available from Design Strand in Playas del Duque in Puerto Banús (www.designstrand.com).

A ROOM
for Good Living Your living room is the beating heart of the home, where we come together to relax and socialise. It could be claimed that the living room is the area that most represents your home’s design style. Choosing rich, sumptuous colours for upholstery and curtains gives a strong design statement. Adding a focal point to the room such as a statement armchair, rug, chandelier or large painting also creates a potent expression of style. The boho look is still popular, using a mix of Scandinavian and Moroccan influences to add a casual feel to a living space - through the use of natural materials such as linens and wood in a neutral colour palette.
The Manarola seating collection was born in 2016, Designer Philippe Nigro created seating that appears to be one single large cushion, offering a stylish aesthetic as well as the utmost in comfort. The armchair is also available on a circular steel base in a brilliant-polished stainless-steel finish that rotates 360 degrees and can be complemented with a footstool that is another part of this collection. It is shown here with Ligne Roset’s Headlight floor lamp, which can be rotated to suit your requirements and offers both direct and indirect illumination (www.ligne-roset.com).

LIGHTING ···
BRIGHTENING UP Your Home
Turning a house into a home can sometimes be as simple as changing the lighting – adding ambience and cosiness. Innovation, design and functionality are the three key factors to take into consideration when investing in lighting. Think about where light is needed within a room, and then carefully choose a lamp that would best suit the space and your particular lighting requirements. If space is limited – such as in a hallway, for example – a wall fixture could be an ideal option. If you have a large room to illuminate, consider a dimmable pendant light or even a statement chandelier, with some smaller table and/or floor lamps dotted around to add pockets of cosy ambient lighting. 62

B E AU T I F U L B AT H RO O M S When giving a home an upgrade, the bathroom is an area that is often put on the back burner, probably because it can turn out to be a costly venture. But giving your bathroom a new lease of life doesn’t have to be a huge investment if your budget is tight. A new washbasin, some clever cabinetry or contemporary taps can make a big difference. Turn your bathroom into a sanctuary instead of it simply being a functional room – and instantly you will elevate the look and feel of the space. 74

A Bedroom That Makes
YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE
The bedroom is a place of harmony and peace – for enjoying the perfect night’s sleep – and that means investing in a bed that amply accommodates your particular needs. The mattress is the practical part and, in reality, one of the most important contributors to superlative relaxation, but the design of the room should also be well-thought out – with appropriate lighting, and orderly with convenient storage. This doesn’t mean the room has to be stark: some plants and a favourite painting are always nice personal touches that make you feel more relaxed, and a soft rug around the bed gives a cosy feel and is pleasant to step on in bare feet. Here are some ideas…

CREATING AN INSPIRATIONAL
Home Office As working from home seems to be the way many businesses prefer to operate these days, creating the perfect workspace in your home is more important than ever to get right. It is not always possible but having a window in front of your desk is a nice idea so that when you look up you have a view to the outside world, with natural sunlight that is good for motivation. It is preferable to be north-facing so that the sun is not too strong but still keeps you more alert. A scented candle and some plants in your workspace are good for general wellbeing, and can be calming when times become stressful. Choose a desk big enough to accommodate any files that you need at arm’s reach, and to avoid eye strain make sure you can position your screen at around 60 centimetres away from your eyes – with the centre of the screen around 10 to 15 degrees below eye level. The ideal chair should be adjustable so that, while working, your feet are flat on the floor and your back is supported and upright with your arms resting on the desk at a 90-degree angle. Finally, avoiding clutter with good storage systems, such as drawers and desk organisers, keeps the mind clear and focused. If you work smart, you will be more efficient and creative, so investing in this area of your home truly does pay-off! 104

Rugs can be quite transformational for a room, changing the whole look of the space. They can warm up the feel of a room and can also serve as a much-needed focal point. Scale is an important factor when choosing a rug. If it is too small or too large, it can knock the balance of the room. These fluffy items take a lot of footfall, so always remember that quality is key.
This Page The Digest Trims collection from YO2 comes in three different sizes, including circular, and in personalised colours (www.yoyo-designs.com). Opposite Page Above The Shade collection from Nanimarquina is inspired by the magic of nature – where colours speak for themselves. Explains designer Begüm Cana Özgür, “This is a handmade flat-weave rug that generates an incredible 110
and well-rounded diffusion of colour. The surface releases a sense of tranquillity and well-being that is balanced by the penetrating vibration of colours.” (www.nanimarquina.com). Below Limited Edition’s Bauhaus Wool Silk collection is made from 60 per cent wool and 40 per cent silk. It is available as a broadloom and comes in an array of different versions, but can also be custom-shaped and coloured (www.le.be).

A potent combination of network music player, pre-amp and power amp in a single box enclosure, the next-generation Majik DSM has been designed to cater for both first-time hi-fi buyers seeking authentic simplicity and existing customers wanting to enhance their high-end hi-fi options in more rooms. It is, in short, the ideal entertainment hub, containing all the analogue, digital and wireless connectivity needed to connect any source – from TV to turntable. Linn’s best-selling streaming product of the last decade has been “completely reimagined to deliver a stunning new look, an all-new feature set and, most importantly, an impressive boost in performance”. The DAC architecture is derived from the development of Linn’s Katalyst technology, including improved upsampling, a lower noise reference voltage and an ultra-low jitter clock for greater timing accuracy throughout. The bespoke, Linn-designed Class D power amplifiers offer better performance
thanks to lower noise and distortion and more efficient signal conversion; and the new Majik DSM also benefits from digital volume control that removes a lossy component from the signal path for lower noise and distortion. Complementing these technical improvements is Linn’s Space Optimisation technology, which optimises performance for an individual room and speaker. Other key features include a new headphone amp designed to power high-quality headphones; and six customisable smart buttons offering immediate access directly from the product to pinned content. The system can also be completed with Majik LP12 and Majik 109 or 140 speakers for high-performance streaming and vinyl playback throughout. Linn is available from Illusion in Urb. UPHOLSTERY
Upholstering an item of furniture can involve new springs, padding and textile. The fabric is the pièce de résistance, and ultimately needs to represent your style as well as compliment the look of a room as a whole. With upholstery fabric, a high Martindale count is imperative if you want it to last the test of time – as it takes a lot of wear and tear. Here are some ideas…

The Cushion
REVOLUTION Cushions are the finishing touch to your sofas and chairs, giving the room an added welcoming feel and perhaps even a designer statement. If your seating is neutral, an accent of colour can be quite transformative. If your sofa is far from a top-of-the-range showstopper, some cushions sufficiently filled to give the right amount of firmness – and covered in a good-quality fabric – can dramatically boost the overall look and give a cosy aesthetic...

Despite global health concerns and the seemingly endless weeks when most of Europe was quarantined, interest in luxury properties has continued to grow, fuelled perhaps by daydreaming of a home in the sun surrounded by beauty and comfort.
While Spain is weathering the changing restrictions, the desire for a second home – or for people to relocate completely to the Marbella area – remains strong. Since the lockdown, many real estate and developer companies in Marbella are reporting a surge in demand for opulent properties. For example, Atlas Group’s project of three villas in Los Flamingos has been met with great interest, with two out of the three already sold while the construction is in progress. In this period following a global distress, it is only natural that people have a strong desire to seek peace of mind, higher standards of living and the comfort that a luxury home can offer. Those who put their plans on hold for the pandemic have continued their journey to build or buy property in Marbella, and the experience of leisure and comfort. Many properties here can offer amazing cinemas, spas and gyms, as well as unbeatable atmosphere, security and sound. 138
With so much interest and activity in the luxury market here in Spain, one must be aware of the expansive benefits and true comforts that your next home can bring. Those who want to build or redesign their home in this special province should also mind all the many amazing possibilities. As you explore the rich options that luxury properties in Marbella present, see how home build and design can create the perfect experience of living. PRACTICALITY MEETS LUXURY Equipped with cinemas, game rooms, home gyms and even spas, highquality homes in Marbella invite you to imagine living beyond ordinary limits – while the day-to-day activities have also been considered. For example, kitchens are well-furnished with high-quality appliances such as the Gaggenau brand, and solutions for worktops can include antibacterial materials to offer peace of mind and functionality.

Through these and other safety innovations, luxury homes also sport security by design, fashioning homes in a style that is both incredibly attractive and extremely safe. Technology and gadgetry bring the design of these spaces to life and offer practical solutions. As we have been forced to stay at home, what we seek in a property has become more acute and interest in home automation has grown. According to one report (published by Market Watch), the smart home market is expected to hold a growth rate of 35 per cent between 2017 and 2023, with many more people turning to working from home and seeking the best solutions to allow them to both work and run the home effectively. Automation through the many different forms of technologies allows homeowners to save energy, live more comfortably and, most importantly, save time so they enjoy being at home. RESORT-STYLE GARDENS In a world that sought shelter indoors through quarantine measures, a property with extra attention to the outdoors can be magnetic to homeowners and those seeking to build their own properties. Among beautiful, sprawling landscapes, the post-pandemic market has prompted a renewed interest in creating a private sphere of relaxation and enjoyment surrounding the home. This kind of pleasure turns a home into something of a resort, with landscaped gardens and private pools adorning the outside. THE RISE OF THE HOME OFFICE With so many forced to work from home during the quarantine, many have taken an extra interest in a home office: a contained space to work and avoid the everyday goings on of the house, and to avoid sharing a space with partners and children who are being home-schooled. An area well-equipped to limit background noise and interruptions and to promote good lighting is key. There is not only the option of creating a dedicated room inside the house, but it is also possible to build a separate living quarters area within the home to create a different environment and encourage the work/life balance. With the luxury Marbella property market going from strength to strength there is no reason not to invest in the area and build a home perfectly suited to your needs. Atlas Group. The first woman to receive the Pritzker Architecture Prize (2004), and also the first female recipient of the Royal Institute of British Architects’ Royal Gold Medal, she was made a Dame by Queen Elizabeth II in 2012 for services to architecture. In reports following her death, The Guardian newspaper described her as the “queen of the curve”, while the New York Times said she “liberated architectural geometry, giving it a whole new expressive identity… (her) soaring structures left a mark on skylines and imaginations around the world, and in the process reshaped architecture for the modern age”. Major works created by Hadid include the Beijing Daxing International Airport and Guangzhou Opera House in China, MAXXI Museum in Rome, Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University (US) and London Aquatics Centre for the 2012 London Olympics. In addition to Daxing Airport, Qatar’s Al Wakrah Stadium (built for the 2022 FIFA World Cup) was still under construction when she died. Then there is the Heydar Aliyev Centre. In 2014, the 57,500 square metre building complex in Baku (Azerbaijan) won the top prize at Design Museum’s Designs of the Year awards ceremony in London. Describing it as one of her most important recent works (together with the London Aquatics Centre), Hadid said, “This was an incredibly ambitious project and for me. It was always my dream to design and build the theoretical project and that was the closest thing to achieving that.” The project was led by Zaha Hadid Architects associate Saffet Kaya Bekiroglu, who, in an interview with
the awards’ media partner Dezeen, noted that the building reflected the romance and optimism of Azerbaijan, a former Soviet Union constituent republic that gained independence in 1991. “They wanted to have something unique, something which is looking at the future, somehow showing their soft, romantic side but at the same time their optimistic side,” said Bekiroglu. “When you look at Soviet era (architecture in Azerbaijan), it’s more like monumental internalised authoritarian buildings. So we wanted to use this building as an opportunity to soften it up and totally depart from that.” Zaha Hadid was appointed as the design architect of the centre in 2007, after winning the commission in a competition. Designed to play an integral role in the intellectual life of the city, and extending over eight floor levels, the building houses a 1,000-seat auditorium, a conference hall, exhibition gallery spaces and a museum – all set in a public plaza. It is meant to represent a fluid form, with a flowing, curved style that eschews sharp angles and “folds” the landscape’s natural topography. The centre’s shell comprises a steel space frame and glass-fibre-reinforced concrete panels, concealing vertical supports within the walls. “It blurs the rigid line between urban and architecture, inside and outside, flooring versus cladding and volume versus ground,” Bekiroglu told Dezeen. Reflecting the fluidity of traditional Azeri architecture, “They have floral patterns and all this ornamentation (that) runs from the flooring to the walls and to the dome. So we wanted to do that in a contemporary way.” HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

GILMAR REAL ESTATE
L U X U RY I N T H E S PA N IS H P R O P E RT Y S E CTO R
What is luxury? If we are talking about homes, we all have a clear – more or less – image of what luxury villas are like on the Costa del Sol. We know they have a high price, in accordance with their specifications, the location and the services they offer. The dictionary tells us that the word “luxury” is defined as “high category, excellence or exquisiteness that something possesses, due to the quality of raw materials used in its manufacture, its select features and its services”. At Gilmar real estate agency, they know very well what luxury is, as they have been marketing properties on the Costa del Sol for more than three decades. However, they also know that the word “luxury” has other meanings, and one of them is “person or thing that is valuable, exceptional or extraordinary”. For this reason, Gilmar’s team of professionals work diligently every day so that all people who place their trust in them receive personalised and effective attention when buying, selling or renting a home. Saving time, and avoiding or solving problems… that is also a luxury. What’s more, it is priceless. Living and enjoying the lifestyle you want is luxury, and at Gilmar they are acutely aware of that. If there is something that distinguishes Gilmar from other real estate companies, it is – in addition to their extensive experience and knowledge of the Costa del Sol – the exquisite treatment they provide to clients, from the first contact until the property sale is finalised. They know what the needs of buyers and sellers are, and they facilitate a successful real estate operation, ensuring that they are able to resolve all aspects of the process with agility and reliability. Clients looking for a luxury home receive full attention according to their requirements and preferences, saving them time and problems, so they only have to worry about enjoying their new property. The Gilmar brand is synonymous with trust, and this is only achieved when it has been demonstrated over many years, when thousands of customers can confirm the peace of mind that this company has offered them at all times. Therefore, luxury is not only in the home, but also in the real estate 142
agency you choose to help you make such an important investment. Gilmar has four commercial offices in Marbella – Golden Mile (Avda. Ricardo Soriano, 56) and Puerto Banús (Plaza Antonio Banderas, 6) – and an office in Estepona (Avda. De España, 190), also covering Sotogrande, as well as a new headquarters in Málaga (C/ Cortina del Muelle, 13), which is due to open its doors in September, and which further demonstrates the company’s clear commitment to the Costa del Sol. However, it doesn’t matter where you are in the world, because Gilmar have the latest technologies applied to real estate marketing, which allows them to close a sale or rental even if the client is not in Spain. To be able to do this safely, trust is essential, something that can only be offered by a company with the professional seriousness and exactitude provided by Gilmar. RE-SALES AND NEW PROJECTS… BEACH, GOLF, MOUNTAINS At Gilmar, they don’t just have expensive homes. On their website they offer nearly 900 re-sale homes for sale, from the most affordable to the most exclusive… only within the reach of a few. Regardless of the available budget, what always prevails is the “luxury” of being able to trust this real estate agency. They can also find newly constructed villas and developments, thus enabling clients to expand their options of finding the house they always dreamed of owning. In the area known as the “New Golden Mile” (between San Pedro de Alcántara and Estepona) are several excellent examples of the options available at Gilmar, including El Campanario Hills, Casas del Mar, Casares Golf, Royal Casares, Blue Suites and Hoyo 19. These cover all the preferences buyers might have: living next to a golf course, great views, a home that opens to the outdoors, excellent features and nearby services... You can check out all this in person or visit their website (www.gilmar.es). You will discover that luxury is not something unattainable. At Gilmar, they are convinced you deserve to enjoy it too. Gilmar have many offices along the Coast. Find out more at www.gilmar.es.

As we come out of the hottest months of the year, we can be left feeling wilted and down. Well, so do our plants. What do we do? We hydrate. So must our plants. Let’s take a step back and look objectively at our garden. It could be time to move some pot plants. I love moving my plants about as they seem to like being somewhere else for a change, and/or pruning them back a bit, clearing out all the dead leaves and dead heading. All of this should be done throughout the year, of course, but leaves get brown quickly in the summer heat, so be careful to pull off as many as possible to keep the plant healthy. Don’t mow the lawn (if you have one) as you normally would. Let it grow a bit longer – otherwise you could get brown patches everywhere. You should start to aerate the ground, and dig up around your plants anyway, as they like to have the soil loosened, and put down some liquid fertiliser. I always find that flowering plants and bushes are very appreciative of that in summer and autumn. Do NOT water during the day, and ONLY the roots. I try to water my garden late at night; the water seeps in and rests on the roots for far longer. Once a week I lightly spray all the plants with some water to freshen them up. If you have large leafed plants on your terraces, wipe them down regularly – the leaves must be kept free of dust. The best thing you can do for them is give them a light shower every week. Terrace plants need to be kept clean as they ab144
sorb so much dirt and dust in the air. They do their best to keep the air fresh, so the least we can do is keep them clean. If you are getting bugs, eco-friendly crushed garlic cloves in a large spray bottle will help. Let the mixture stand for three days, shake before spraying and then go for it. I do all my herbs and especially the undersides, as the pesky bugs attack there as well. My chillies, coriander, basil, lemon thyme, oregano, parsley and mint are all bug-free. Just wash them all well before using. Incidentally, if you can, don’t chop basil. Tear it, as this gives a better flavour. Now is the time to use a lot of your herbs for delicious oils. Never with olive oil, only a good sunflower or rape oil, as olive oil overpowers the herbal taste. Don’t be stingy with putting herbs into oil – the more the better. Let the oils sit for at least two weeks, shaking the sterilised bottles gently from time to time. Many flowers have gone into semi-hibernation during the heat. Just watch, as soon as it cools down, up they will come with renewed vigour. You can appreciate the new flowering once again. September and October here on the Costa del Sol can still be very hot, so treat your plants, bushes and trees with care. They will appreciate it and so will you. Have fun, stay safe and I hope to have you all back for the next edition. Alia Babapulle – Interior and Exterior Designer Tel. (+34) 616 670 975 / aliabdesigns@live.co.uk

BOHO CLUB And Now for Something Different… Bohemian-Chic Boutique Hotel in the Heart of Marbella

When Swedish developer Quartiers Properties bought a rundown recreational complex in Marbella, the plan was to resurrect it as an upscale and stylish retreat. But not just any hotel matching the classic whitewashed Mediterranean style so common on the Costa del Sol. They wanted it to offer all the trimmings of Marbella’s celebrated luxury lifestyle – but be Bohemian and eclectic in a laidback style. They wanted guests to feel they were in a private members’ club ambience rather than an impersonal hotel chain with an old-fashioned mindset. To achieve their objective, they turned to hospitality design experts Stylt to create a concept highlighted by rich deep colours that add elegant drama to the setting in a casual, hippie-chic manner. Built in the 1960s, Centro Forestal Sueco in Marbella spent the following decades as a recreational centre for the Swedish Forest Agency. Fifty years later, it had clearly seen better days, having been left in a dilapidated and sadly forsaken state, but Quartiers Properties saw potential. One year later, after the award-winning Stylt agency team had weaved their magic, Boho Club was re-born as a haven of intimate charm and understated allure. This commitment to offering something different is embodied in Stylt’s design for Boho Club’s 20 hotel rooms, nine bungalows and Boho Suite, complemented by a sublime restaurant, lush gardens with hangout areas and bars, and a pool area with Bernie’s Bistro. The interior design is characterised by diverse touches of personality and well-matched contrasts. Modernity meets the classics in enchanting mixes of bamboo and velvet, golden mosaics and traditional rustic tiles, strong colours and soft natural fabrics. Handpicked and sometimes rather eccentric furniture, objects and art add a personal fingerprint, far from the traditional Marbella style of luxury living. This bold new style gives Boho Club a relaxed atmosphere – but with an impressive wow-factor. In short, a well-curated and well-crafted refuge – yet playful, informal, vibrant and fun. Not surprisingly, in the 2019 Outstanding Property Award London (OPAL), Stylt and Boho Club were “Platinum” winners for best interior design. Boho Club Ctra. N-340, Km. 176. Urb. Guests staying at Puente Romano Beach Resort are now able enjoy a new eco-friendly way to view the Mediterranean. This summer, the Andalucian villagestyle resort on the beachfront between Marbella and Puerto Banús launched a new service for clients (available throughout the year), enabling them to sail around the Mediterranean in total privacy, peace and quiet, while taking in spectacular views of the Málaga mountains, Gibraltar rock and northern Africa’s coastline. The 53-foot, fully-crewed sailing boat is “naturally powered by the fresh breeze and energy of the sea for an experience that’s just as eco-friendly as it is luxurious”. According to Puente Romano, resort hotel guests and owners club members can enjoy a whole day on board discovering the Andalucian coast, dive straight from the boat to swim or snorkel, or enjoy paddle boarding in the Costa del Sol’s azure waters. Freshly made Spanish cuisine is prepared on board, and guests can chillout while basking in the sunshine before, as the day draws to an end, admiring the area’s stunning sunsets. They also have the opportunity to sit back, relax and look out for dolphins among the waves, or – with an experienced captain on board – learn how to be a skipper themselves for the day, testing their skills at navigating the sailboat. The sporty boat has been designed for racing as well as comfortable cruising, offering the best of both yachting worlds. The sailing excursion includes use of spacious lounge areas, kitchen, living room and main cabin, plus two guest cabins equipped with their own bathrooms. “The Jeanneau 53 sailboat is ecologically clean and green,” stresses Puente Romano, “and highlights the importance of caring for our seas at a time when it is more important than ever”. The sailing service is available in four and eight-hour rental packages: €750 and €1,200, respectively. All packages include food on board “inspired by the best dishes of authentic Spanish cuisine”. Back on shore, the 180 spacious Puente Romano Beach Resort suites extend across three-storey villas, each surrounded by verdant subtropical gardens and waterfalls, with stunning landscaping all the way down to the Mediterranean Sea. The 55,000 square metre resort offers more than 15 restaurants with a diverse range of international cuisines, including the beachfront Sea Grill, new Nobu By the Beach, newly opened Les Jardins and Dani García’s Leña, as well as a variety of organic restaurants. . The resort also comprises mainland Spain’s only Six Senses Spa, which includes a hydrotherapy pool, cold plunge pool, herbal steam room, sauna and hammam. A wide selection of Six Senses signature treatments and wellness therapies is available, including a new CBD oil treatment designed to help relieve tension and relax muscles. International-class fitness and wellness facilities are located on and around the property, offering activities including tennis, golf, horse-riding, paddle boarding, swimming, and yoga and Pilates. www.puenteromano.com @PuenteRomano HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

“STAY SA F E ” Measures in Place at Flagship Costa de la Luz Hotel Major hotel chains around Spain cautiously re-opened for this year’s main tourist season, adding strict coronavirus safeguards to their customary offerings of luxurious leisure and relaxation. Cádiz was one of the least-affected Spanish provinces when the pandemic hit Spain, prompting an unprecedented nation-wide lockdown, but top hotels in the area have still been meticulous in ensuring they adhere to the extensive raft of health and safety protocols in place for both society in 152
general and tourist resorts specifically. Gran Meliá Sancti Petri – located on the picturesque Costa de la Luz – was quick to adapt to the new circumstances, as part of the hotel group’s global “Stay Safe” commitment and its associated tagline, “When you come back, stay safe with Meliá”.

According to M eliá Hotels International, the campaign was “designed to reconnect with customers and was based on the results of a survey of more than 100,000 Meliá Rewards members to find out more about their motivation and needs in this new post-COVID era, among which, above all, their primary concerns were safety and competitive pricing. “All the hotels scheduled to re-open have earned the Stay Safe with Meliá guarantee, the result of a programme Meliá Hotels International has created to adapt hotels to the new situation, including a guide to the rigorous application of the health and safety recommendations made by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and local health authorities. “This global programme has been certified by Bureau Veritas and includes a wide range of health and safety activities in all the different parts of the hotel as well as a focus on the emotional well-being of customers to ensure the company can guarantee the best possible hotel experience.” At Gran Meliá Sancti Petri, these measures include “intensifying cleaning processes, modifying spaces to guarantee social distancing, and redesigning processes to reduce interaction with customers”. The hotel advises clients that the measures could alter the availability of certain services and also provide “new experiences focused on digital solutions”. Inspired architecturally by Córdoba’s mosque and the Alhambra in Granada, and built in a Neo-Mudéjar palace style, the hotel provides direct access to La Bar-
rosa – generally considered to be one of Spain’s most attractive beaches. Clients are invited to, “Relax to the babble of water in an Arab-style courtyard. Rest your eyes on the waves. Evoke visions of the sea through cuisine. Gran Meliá Sancti Petri immerses you in a truly authentic experience that reveals the essence of our way of life… When luxury caresses the soul.” The hotel is 30 minutes from Cádiz capital city, a convenient drive from the Costa del Sol along the Tarifa coastline, and ideally located for daily excursions to the scenic nearby mountain range and its iconic “white villages”. The Sancti Petri resort area is home to five top golf courses, including one designed by the legendary Seve Ballesteros. There are five restaurants within the hotel complex, highlighted by the Alevante, offering “wave after wave of culinary sensations” created by Ángel León, the renowned “chef of the sea” whose Aponiente restaurant in El Puerto de Santa María (near Cádiz) has three Michelin stars. Gran Meliá Sancti Petri comprises more than 200 rooms and suites, some with a private garden, and elegant marble patios, various swimming pools, Bali beds, a Spa by Clarins and “Travel Culture” for children. In short… “At Gran Meliá Sancti Petri every little detail has incalculable value: the softness of the sheets, an after-dinner conversation with a view, a gentle sea breeze to accompany the sunset. Rest in spectacular rooms and suites bathed in sunlight or just allow time to run slowly by alongside the pool.” HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

A BOHO-CHIC PARADISE in the Heart of Mijas Costa
Max Beach has for many years been a landmark establishment nestled on the edge of the Mediterranean Sea in Riviera. Since being taken over by restaurant group giant Metro Grupo – who own numerous successful venues across the Coast, such as Jacks, Joys, Cibo Italian, Alberts and Bono Beach, to name but a few – Max Beach has had an impressive facelift. It now offers clients an upmarket environment in which to enjoy a delicious and varied menu at excellent prices. We went down to Mijas Costa to find out more… 154

Max Beach is without a doubt the largest venue of its type in the Mijas area and beyond, sprawling around the cove of Playa Riviera with sophistication and style. The newly-decorated venue is distinctly bohochic, with natural elements used throughout to give a casual and calming feel – including raffia parasols, lots of wooden furniture and decorative features, and natural vegetation aplenty. So, let’s start with the restaurant area. Well, there are actually four zones. Dining is available inside the venue and there is also a huge wooden terrace looking out over the sea. What’s more, there is dining downstairs by the pool area as well as above it. The main menu is definitely a crowd-pleaser, with an array of different types of cuisine to choose from, including salads, burgers, pasta, pizza, sushi, meat and fish dishes – plus the option of sharing platters. All dishes are cooked to precision in their impressive newly-reformed kitchen, and the ingredients are creatively assembled on each plate like little works of art. The drinks menu is vast, with exciting cocktails, carefully selected wines, gins and champagnes, as well as non-alcoholic beverages including fresh lemonade and iced teas. We must also not forget to mention that this venue is open for breakfast, offering an interesting array of coffees, juices and smoothies to kickstart your day while looking out over the glistening sea. An excellent variety of delectable dishes includes eggs benedict, “Breakfast Burrito”, pancakes, fruit bowls, “Maxshukka” eggs, Croque Monsieur and a comprehensive “Full English” breakfast – and that is just listing a few. For those who want to push the boat out, the “Max Mediterranean Special Breakfast for Two” will ensure that you and your companion are well set-up to take on the day ahead. This mother of all breakfasts includes eggs, assorted toasts, hummus, smashed avocado, spinach, Israeli salad, smoked ham, fruit, tzatziki, granola and either a Mimosa or a Bloody Mary! With this stunning environment and a menu that spoils you for choice, it might be assumed that the HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

prices would be less than palatable (as is often the experience in many establishments of this genre along the Coast). However, this is certainly not the case at Max Beach. Their concept is to welcome everyone to enjoy an idyllic and tranquil setting with great service and gastronomy – and no nasty surprises. With that long-sighted philosophy, they trust that their guests will come back time and time again. After all, Max Beach is an all year-round venue so they want to encourage residents throughout the winter months to continue to visit them. Their relaxing rectangular pool area has comfortable well-spaced sun loungers and you can enjoy their resident DJ’s choice of Café del Mar-style music to add some extra ambience. Although, according to the DJ himself, “If you can’t hear the sound of the waves below, the music is too loud” – reassuring information if banging music is not your penchant. Max Beach also spans to the beach below, so if you would prefer to be closer to the sea they have extremely comfortable sun loungers available there as well. 156
On top of everything else, Max Beach also offers a fully-comprehensive gymnasium (Max Fitness) that looks out over the sea. This has already become a popular venue for gym-goers thanks to its innovative facilities, friendly atmosphere and privileged location. Max Beach has seen many changes over the years but it is safe to say that this new-look venue has surpassed all expectations, with the latest changes offering a wonderful experience to all visitors. Don’t miss their spectacular full moon parties, when they have lots of fabulous live entertainment – making a great night out. Information about these nights can be found on their website or Facebook page. Max Beach Ctra. A7, Km. 198.1 Urb. Riviera del Sol, Mijas Costa Tel. (+34) 952 930 858 info@maxbeach.es www.maxbeach.es

It seems that for whatever purpose, usually self-promotion, people never tire of inventing new descriptions for wine, as if the term were not enough in itself. Wine is a product made from fermented grape juice, and that’s it. Labels on bottles are admittedly not generous with information, but the law in each country’s case is invariably complied with, and those little notes about a wine being suitable for drinking with scrambled eggs, marinated venison, fried fish, etc., are never to be taken seriously, not least by the very winemakers who make up this stuff. Within the last couple of decades, however, we have been bombarded with different categorisations – or should that be BS? I confess to having praised organic wines when they were first marketed all those years ago, as they seemed to have everything in their favour. But what happened? Where are they now? We occasionally see the term “organic” on a label, but do we take much notice? Do we go out of our way to search out organic wines in stores or restaurants? (Well, undoubtedly some people do, representing the inconsequential minority.) Later the term “natural” became popular but, as producers of natural wines would occasionally admit if you caught them off guard, this was poor man’s organic without the need for lengthy certification procedures and vineyard conversions. Its prime objective was to convey the message that pesticides were not used, but of course there was no way of checking, and we had to take the winemakers at their word. So what are we to make of the newest classification that appears to be the buzzword of the moment, “clean wine”? When we refer to an item as “clean” the inference is that everything else is not clean, so do we assume that the lack of “cleanliness” is associated with the fact that most wines are loaded with chemicals and additives? The unwritten message has to be that if we value our health such wines should be avoided. Movie actress Cameron Díaz started the trend, noticeably counselled by a savvy and opportunistic media agency, jumping on the same bandwagon as the already-flying Clean Food and Clean Eating movements. Indeed, if we dig a little deeper, we do indeed find that the movement in the US is masterminded by the Power agency, which also advises mega brands such as Clique and Who What Wear. It is also apparent that the actress has morphed into a part-time wine producer, whose $24 Avaline Catalunyan white and Vin de France rosé are certified as organically cultivated and free from “unnecessary extras”, whatever that phrase is supposed to convey to the drinker. No-one, least of all the writer, is making excuses for additive-overloaded wines, with a potential of as many as 70 alien substances that may be added to them (not all at once and not with all wines). Diaz’s pitch is therefore that “most wines sold in the United States contain colour enhancers, preservatives, chemical stabilisers, Mega Purple, oak essence, sugar, acid, and the like”. And many indeed do. 158
The list includes yeasts, fining agents that come from animal sources, and even PVPP, the binding agent used in making aspirin tablets, as it helps reduce colour intensity so is useful for lightening up too-dark rosés. At the lower end of the consumer scale, cheap American reds are bolstered with grape concentrate to give more colour and sweetness. In the EU the addition of any grape concentrate is prohibited, and it is actually easier to make natural wines than normal ones. The hands-off approach means less intervention in the growing and maturing processes. So, the logical question arises, why not list ingredients on the label, as food producers are legally obliged to do? The common-sense response is that wine is not an industrial product and is made by an artisan process that can vary from one batch to another. Clearly the big boys may have no trouble listing ingredients, but it would be a nightmare for small producers to have to update labels every now and again. Dr Ignacio Sánchez Recarte, secretary general of the Comité Européen des Entreprises Vins (CEEV), which represents the EU’s wine sector, says it’s because wine isn’t made by an industrial process. While the majority of food manufacturers work to a strict, unchanging recipe, winemaking evaluations change with each vintage.
FINE DINING… AT CASA NAVARRA Although officially in Mijas, this restaurant is only a few metres up the Mijas road from the Fuengirola bypass. It is like a typical Navarra casona, quite out of place on the Coast, and founded in 1990 by Carlos and Merche (daughter Leira is an excellent chef). It really is a little piece of northern Spain on the Costa del Sol. Meat is the speciality, and a variety of large cuts usually found in the asadores (grill houses) of the Basque country are the star turn. Fish is also excellent, and the wine list again reflects the owners’ background. There are dishes on the menu that are not found anywhere else in the area, including kokotxas de merluza (hake cheek). Traditional cheeses and home-made desserts, such as tocino de cielo, should not be missed. Ctra de Mijas Km. 4, Mijas Costa (Fuengirola) Tel. (+34) 952 580 439

HOW TO BE COOL with Your Breathing By Rachel Garrod
If you have breathing problems, this time of the year can be very tough. The heat – and we experience a lot of it here in Spain, even into earlyautumn – can adversely affect your breathing and make it difficult to keep active. Pollen allergies may be worse, especially during summer, and increased ozone in the air causes the muscles in the airways to constrict, resulting in wheeziness. So keeping cool is essential. Apart from the obvious things such as staying out of the sun, keeping hydrated and wearing loose clothes made of natural fibres, there are a few extra things we can do that might help. I like to keep a damp face cloth in the fridge and place that on my forehead or back of neck when the heat becomes particularly uncomfortable. Wrapping a bag of frozen peas or ice cubes in a damp tea towel and using that as a cooling aid is also beneficial. For people with breathing problems, air conditioning can leave them feeling dry-mouthed and tight-chested so in that case (or if you just don’t have air conditioning) a ceiling fan is a great option. Having a portable fan that you can take around the room with you (or more than one) is also a good idea, and I would always advise having access to a fan of some sort when cooking. There is an old wives’ tale that drinking hot drinks will leave you cooler than a cold one, and in fact there is some science to this. One study showed 160
that by drinking something hotter than the body temperature we increase the amount we sweat. Since the evaporation of sweat is what helps us cool down – as long as there is movement in the air to encourage evaporation (think portable fan again) and you are wearing loose clothing – the body temperature will be lower than before the drink. Another trick is to put cold water (or hold an ice cube) on both pressure points of your wrists. This lowers the temperature of the blood within your arms which is then recycled through the body. This should keep you a cooler for up to an hour. Even though it is hard, in the heat, we still need to keep active. Try getting some exercise first thing in the morning before it is too hot, or in the early evening once the heat of the sun has died down a little. And finally, even though a long gin and tonic is tempting, alcohol does mess with our thermoregulatory centre, so it’s wise to keep the booze to a minimum or avoid it totally when it is very hot. Here’s to staying cool! Rachel Garrod (Ph.D. Physiotherapist) specialises in physiotherapy for older people with chronic respiratory disease and other chronic illnesses. rachelgarrod1@gmail.com Tel. DEVELOPING A MULTI DRUG COCKTAIL AGAINST COVID-19 A new American study has identified 21 existing drugs that stop the replication of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Scientists analysed one of the world’s largest collections of known drugs for their ability to block the replication of SARS-CoV-2. They identified 100 molecules with confirmed antiviral activity in laboratory tests. Of these, 21 drugs were determined to be effective at concentrations that could be safely achieved in patients. Notably, four of these compounds were found to work synergistically with remdesivir, a current standard-of-care treatment for COVID-19. “Remdesivir has proven successful at shortening the recovery time for patients in the hospital, but the drug doesn’t work for everyone who receives it. That’s not good enough,” said study investigator Sumit Chanda, who is the director of the immunity and pathogenesis program at Sanford Burnham Prebys in La Jolla (California). “As infection rates continue to rise in America and around the world, the urgency remains to find affordable, effective, and readily available drugs that can complement the use of remdesivir, as well as drugs that could be given prophylactically or at the first sign of infection on an outpatient basis.” In the study, the research team performed extensive testing and validation studies, including evaluating the drugs on human lung biopsies that were infected with the virus. Among 21 drugs that were effective at blocking viral replication, the scientists found that 13 have previously entered clinical trials for other indications and two are already FDA-approved: astemizole (allergies) and clofazamine (leprosy). Remdesivir has received Emergency Use Authorisation from the FDA for treating COVID-19. The researchers found that four of the drugs worked synergistically with remdesivir, including the chloroquine derivative hanfangchin A (tetrandrine), an antimalarial drug that has reached Phase 3 clinical trials. HOW IS THE VIRUS MUTATING? The SARS-CoV-2 mutation rate currently is remaining low. Across Europe and Italy, the most widespread strain is G, while the L strain from Wuhan is gradually disappearing. These mutations, however, do not impinge on the process of developing effective vaccines. It is now known that the virus
causing the COVID-19 pandemic presents in the form of at least six strains. Despite its mutations, the virus shows little variability, and this is good news for the researchers working on a viable vaccine. Italian Researchers at the University of Bologna analysed 48,635 coronavirus genomes, which were isolated by researchers in labs all over the world. It was then possible for researchers to map the spread and the mutations of the virus during its journey to all continents. Their study was published in the journal Frontiers in Microbiology. The results are encouraging at this time. The coronavirus presents little variability, approximately seven mutations per sample. Common influenza has a variability rate that is significantly higher. “The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus is presumably already optimised to affect human beings, and this explains its low evolutionary change,” said study coordinator Federico Giorgi, from the department of pharmacy and biotechnology at the University of Bologna in Italy. “This means that the treatments we are developing, including a vaccine, might be effective against all the virus strains.” The original strain is the L strain, which appeared in Wuhan in December 2019. Its first mutation was the S strain and it appeared at the beginning of 2020. Since mid-January 2020, researchers identified strains V and G, and strain G is the most widespread. It mutated into strains GR and GH at the end of February 2020. “Strain G and its related strains GR and GH are by far the most widespread, representing 74 per cent of all gene sequences we analysed,” said Giorgi. “They present four mutations, two of which are able to change the sequence of the RNA polymerase and Spike proteins of the virus. This characteristic probably facilitates the spread of the virus.” Currently, strains G and GR are the most frequent across Europe and Italy. The GH strain seems close to non-existence in Italy, while it occurs more frequently in France and Germany. This seems to confirm the effectiveness of previous containment methods. In North America, the most widespread strain is GH, while in South America the GR strain is more frequent. CULTURAL AGENDA Museums, Art Galleries, Theatres and Exhibitions on the Costa del Sol Málaga’s rich cultural life is continuing to re-awaken after being forced into hibernation during the early months of the coronavirus pandemic. As we reported last issue, in recent years the capital of the Costa del Sol has consolidated its status as one of Europe’s premier city cultural hubs – with a diverse array of museums, art galleries, theatres, and other cultural exhibitions and monuments.
During summer, and now continuing into the autumn season, most of the main cultural establishments in Málaga have scheduled top exhibitions and shows – for both in-person and digital visits. In respect of the former, Spain’s critical COVID-19 health protocols and measures are in full force for the protection and safety of patrons. Here are some of the main highlights for September, October and beyond…

CHEAPER, GREENER
E L E CT R I CI T Y Article by Mariposa Energía
Why is the smart money on green energy in Spain? We all know that the world’s reliance on fossil fuels is unsustainable. The good news is that over the last few years the “powers that be” seem to have woken up, smelled the coffee and decided to take positive action. At the UN Climate Change Conference (Paris, 2015) global leaders pushed through initiatives to fund research, innovation and technology to make green energy more available. Closer to home in Spain, the government is a keen advocate of the EU’s goal of achieving a climate-neutral Europe by 2050. At the vanguard of green energy... Blessed with an abundance of sunshine, gusty plains and endless coastline, it is no accident that Spain, and in particular Andalucia, is a forerunner in green energy production, nor surprising that wind farms and sunpowered solar PVs are a common site along the coast. Martin Tye, CEO of San Pedro-based green energy brokers Mariposa Energía explains how individuals and businesses can do their bit for the environment... “Changing to green energy is a no-brainer. By switching to wind farm energy you can benefit from our cheaper electricity tariffs and save up to 35% per cent on your bill. Or opt for Solar PV panels, generate your own electricity and save money. What’s more, if you generate more than you use you will even get paid for it.” For those who are concerned about sustainability, companies such as Mariposa Energía supply cheaper electricity, and the electricity supplied is also certified by the Spanish regulatory body, Comisión Nacional De Los Mercados Y La Competencia (CNMC), as being 100 per cent green, renewable and sustainable. 164
So how is green electricity generated? Wind energy is created using turbines to convert the wind’s kinetic energy into electricity via a generator. And as its name suggests, solar power is harnessed from the sunshine using solar PV (Photovoltaic) panels to absorb the light and create electrons to generate an electric current. As anyone living in southern Spain can attest, there is plenty of sunshine, making it the ideal environment for solar PV panels. The equipment is silent and can be conveniently located on the roof, and minimal maintenance is required except for keeping the panels relatively clean. Similarly, wind is freely available and it is a completely clean method of generating electricity. The large white turbines can convert up to 60 per cent of the wind’s kinetic energy into power. Wind farms are extremely successful in southern Spain due to the expansive coastal areas and open plains. Solar versus wind power... The type of energy you choose will most likely depend upon your circumstances. As long as you have a roof you can benefit from solar energy, making it the perfect option for villas and townhouses. If you live in an apartment you can easily switch to wind farm energy without the need for any work to be done. It’s literally easier than flicking a switch. It is obvious why the smart money is backing green energy… saving the planet is now the savvy financial option. For more information contact Mariposa Energía on Tel. HEALTH & BEAUTY
T H E F I RST B U I L D I N G B LO CK O F A N T I -AG E I N G Millions of euros are spent each year in Marbella on health and beauty treatments and products by the many women – and an increasing number of men – who want to retain a youthful appearance. However, one key ingredient is often overlooked: antioxidants. To retain a youthful appearance and live a long and healthy life, it is vital to have an adequate level of carotenoid antioxidants in your body. According to beauty consultant Lisa Parsons, “It is not often that one finds something unique in the health and beauty world, making the Pharmanex scanner quite a find.” Pharmanex, a US company that produces scientific measuring equipment, is the manufacturer of the BioPhotonic Scanner. “Biophotonichealth.com offers a service that can measure your antioxidant levels at home and, if you wish, provide solutions for those with low antioxidant levels. For many, this could be the vital missing link in their health and anti-ageing programme.” To book an appointment: WhatsApp (+44) 7961 126009 www.biophotonichealth.com

TIME MACHINE SOUNDS
BESPOKE AUDIO AT ITS FINEST Retro items, popular consumer products and designs from the past are experiencing an exciting revival – and this includes hi-fi amplifiers made with valves (tubes). Valve amplifiers were the mainstay of the music industry from studios to the homes of music-lovers between the1940s and 1980s, before they were displaced by the cheaper transistor amplifier. Today, high-quality valve amplifiers are much appreciated and greatly respected by music connoisseurs everywhere for their clarity and warmth of reproduction. Time Machine Sounds S.L. (TMS) is a company based in Marbella which designs, develops and manufactures high-end valve amplifiers by hand.
Stephen Robinson, the owner behind TMS, started making them as a hobby. But friends, acquaintances and critics listened to his amplifiers, thought they were excellent and encouraged him to make them available on a wider basis. So TMS was born: “to transport the great sound of yesterday into the present”. Experience these sounds through exclusive pieces of hand-crafted equipment, carefully designed to blend the exceptional valve sound with the benefits of modern construction and quality components – for long-life, environmentally-friendly products. COSTA WOMEN
H E L P I N G P E O P L E M OV E TO S PA I N W I T H S PA I N E X P O Costa Women have announced the re-launch of an online platform designed to help people moving to Spain. Drawing on the experience of thousands of members moving to Spain, Costa Women said they realised that research was the key to a successful move and integration. “But where do you go, who do you ask and what would you ask them?” In 2018 Costa Women staged SpainExpo as a one-week online conference, and its success prompted them to redesign and develop the concept. As Costa Women founder Ali Meehan notes, “In 10 years of welcoming thousands of new members to Costa Women as they are moving to Spain, I have seen success or challenges. One thing everyone agrees
168
is that the difference is research. After years of discussing what could be done to bridge the research gap, we have formulated the ideal solution. SpainExpo.org aims to empower people with knowledge on a scale between useful and life-changing to practically help make the decisions that pay dividends in the short and long term.” SpainExpo.org includes more than 30 videos of experts interviewed about their specialist subjects, including residency, schools, property, law, banking, tax, mortgages, building, planning and language, as well as other website, social media and book references and a monthly newsletter to keep subscribers updated. www.costawomen.com / www.spainexpo.org

NORTHBYNORTH
DA N I S H D E S I G N CO M PA N Y E X PA N DS TO S PA I N When it comes to high-quality bamboo outdoor furniture, Northbynorth are considered leaders in the European market. Now the Denmark-based company, established by Niels Hjorth in 2008, has expanded its operations to Spain – not only seeking end-user clients but also enterprising industry representatives interested in becoming re-sellers. Northbynorth’s distinctive bamboo terrace furniture is created by designers David and Karin Mintz who, based in Vietnam for over 10 years, have extensive knowledge of bamboo as a material and its possibilities in furniture production. Working closely with the owner, they share a vision for creating bamboo furniture “based on the desire to harmonise highquality outdoor furniture with Scandinavian style”. Production of their bamboo furniture is 100 per cent organic. “Sustainable bamboo means that no dangerous substances have been used in production; no chemicals, pesticides or fertilisers are used. “All of our bamboo, each horizontal or vertical cane in the Northbynorth’s furniture range, comes from bamboo plantations located in Vietnam, close to the factory that produces the furniture. The factory employs local Vietnamese workers and uses its own bamboo throughout production, ensuring craftsmanship of the highest quality.” www.northbynorth.es

R E COV E R I N G A D E BT I N S PA I N The Importance of Having the Right Lawyer Article supplied by Welex Lawyers & Accountants
Day-to-day economic activity in Spain is not immune from suffering setbacks, delays and, in many cases, breaches in orders or contracts agreed between parties to provide a service or goods. What was expected to be a normal service, or purchase/sale, without any delay can sometimes end up becoming a real headache, especially if the service that has been paid for is unsatisfactory or the goods that have been purchased do not comply with the conditions previously agreed in the business agreement. In order to recover an amount paid in Spain, the first thing to do is to determine the nature of that amount, and the second is to choose a respected law firm that is expert in quantity claims in Spain and has the solvency to contribute to a quick management of the conflict, says Welex lawyer Rafael Andrades. “Depending on where this obligation arises we can find ourselves before one procedural path or another; article 1089 of the Spanish Civil Code says that every obligation consists of giving, doing or not doing something; and article 1090 states that obligations arise from the law of contracts or legal agreements of these obligations.” These obligations cannot be contained – except on rare occasions – by force (coercive means). Obliging a person to do what they don’t want to do can be contained by “imposing” a certain legal consequence, generally the payment of a certain amount of money. “We also have compensation for non-material damage… a person’s morale is the consideration, the esteem that others may have for us or what we have for ourselves. It is something that cannot be restored, there is no ‘restitutio in natura’ that can be returned to a person who has been falsely accused of committing a criminal act or a crime of slander. Let us say that this consideration of others cannot be restored in a material way,” notes Rafael Andrades. 170
One of the most common and frequent defaults is related to the contractual rental relationship in Spain, which can lead to legal complaints and costly lawsuits. In this regard, Andrades points out that the emergence of the obligation is the existence of a previous lease contract and, as a result of non-payment by the lessee, the lessor can exercise different actions in Spain. “It is something that is very usual. In these cases it leads to a special nondeclarative ordinary or verbal procedure for the eviction for non-payment and the claim of rent and similar amounts.” Welex provides services to both tenants and landlords. They can claim unpaid bills for electricity or water – and sometimes there are contracts in which it is agreed that each pays half the Wi-Fi connection or telephone line. Community of owners expenses are not usually subject to lease conditions; they are linked to the ownership of a property and are the responsibility of the owner. “If the landlord has a lease contract that is not fulfilled, they come to Welex so that we can exercise, in their interests, actions to claim the rent or other amounts. We request eviction and recovery of the property.” On some occasions, however, the tenant is the one who contacts Welex, “because they are in a situation of crisis or economic precariousness, and they want to use an extrajudicial route to reach an agreement by offering to hand over the rented flat in exchange for remission of the debt”.
