hat inspires me most is being able to open my eyes every day and take pleasure in what I see. Being able to learn something new, to meet someone new, and above all, to keep working. As Picasso said: “Make sure inspiration finds you working.” However, everyone has a different view of the world, and of how to enjoy it. In summer, leave behind the routine, the city noise, the excesses and the complications, to relish freedom and nature. Enjoy the company of friends and family, the sound of the waves, the sun, the beach, good music, a compelling book... We live in a privileged city, blessed with sunshine almost all year round. There is time for everything, and we should enjoy all the Art to be lived and felt in each and every corner of Marbella and Sotogrande. Streets replete with intriguing men and women, restaurants and impressive beach clubs filled to capacity, an endless procession of cars and yachts... Renewed wardrobes, bursting with optimism and lots of colour. SUMMER IS HERE! On the front cover of this issue you are holding, we proudly feature one of Spain’s most attractive, interesting, energetic men; Antonio Banderas - a man who sets high standards. An artist with a prodigious professional career, whose ingenuity is evident in everything he puts his mind to. A much-loved international star, even more so here, because he has never forgotten that his roots lie in Malaga, no matter where life takes him. For this reason, we are proud to acknowledge his career in the article, in tribute to such an intense life, and to everything he is doing for Malaga, his homeland. But there is a lot more to be discovered in this edition: An interesting interview where Daniel Shamoon talks about “World Vision”, Manolo Santana, Antonio Cardenal... We aim to improve our work on a daily basis, and we hope that each and every one of you, whatever your tastes may be, can find an interesting article to read in the following pages. It is an ever-changing world we live in... Publishing a magazine implies a lot of work, making many decisions, and above all, devoting a lot of time to it. It only remains for me to wish you all a happy summer, and I hope you enjoy this edition.

THE PASSIONATE

ACCLAIMED ACTOR from Málaga On August 10th, 1960, José Antonio Domínguez Banderas was born in La Caleta Hospital in Malaga. The son of José and Ana, a policeman and a high-school teacher, he was destined to become the most successful and internationally famous Spanish actor, by the name of Antonio Banderas. An acclaimed Malaga-born artist who has never forgotten his homeland, where he spent the first years of his life. Antonio always showed a real vocation for the artistic world, which led him to form part of the ARA Theatre School, and later to study at the School of Performing Arts in Málaga (ESAEM). At the age of 18, and in the midst of Madrid’s youth culture movement, he moves to the capital and starts out performing in small productions, until the director, Pedro Almodóvar, gives him his first big break in the cinema, with Labyrinth of Passion (1982). After starring in several films, the name Antonio Banderas starts to gain fame, and Madonna requests his participation in her film, In Bed with Madonna (1991). That same year, he began his career in Hollywood, after getting one of the leading roles in The Mambo Kings.

CAREER AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Banderas’ career is soon unstoppable. Among the many movies in his American filmography, Philadelphia (1993), Interview with the Vampire (1994), Desperado (1995) or The Mask of Zorro (1998) are just a few of the noteworthy titles. His name appears alongside those of acclaimed actors such as Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise or Melanie Griffith, who would later become his wife. At the same time he is enjoying success as an actor, Antonio Banderas, always known for his strong work ethic, makes his debut as a director with the film Crazy in Alabama (1999). In 2003 he debuts on Broadway with the musical Nine, and a year later, he does the voiceover for the character of Puss in Boots in the Shrek saga. Predecessor by over a decade of the international success of other Spanish actors, such as PenÊlope Cruz or Javier Bardem, Antonio is the first Spanish actor to be nominated for the Golden Globes, the Tony Awards and the Emmy Awards. After being named Honorary Citizen of Malaga in 2001, he is awarded the Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts in 2008, and in 2010 he is given an honorary doctorate from the University of Malaga. He also receives the title of Honorary Citizen of Andalusia in 2013, and a year later, he collects an honorary Goya from the Spanish Film Academy, with a moving speech dedicated to his daughter, Stella del Carmen. Two years later, after having worked in countless acclaimed national and foreign films, Banderas proudly collects the National Cinematography Award in recognition of his overall career.

MÁLAGA IN HIS HEART Always loyal to his origins, Antonio has never lost his attachment to Malaga, and is constantly flying the flag for his city of birth, with which he still maintains a close relationship nowadays. As well as hosting the Starlite charity gala in Marbella, he normally goes to Holy Week in Malaga with his family every year. He is a brother of the “Archicofradía del Paso y la Esperanza” and of the “Cofradías Fusionadas”, where he participates as “mayordomo del trono” for the “Virgen de Lágrimas y Favores”, for which he holds a special devotion. Accompanied by his partner, Nicole Kimpel, he was seen a few weeks ago in the Palm Sunday procession, where he assured reporters “no matter how many years go by, my feelings will stay the same, because this is the neighbourhood where I grew up”. SOHO THEATRE Since the premiere of his latest film, Pain and Glory, by Pedro Almódovar, Antonio Banderas has been particularly passionate about the Teatro del Soho Caixabank, which was conceived with the aim of highlighting the city of Malaga as a major cultural centre of national and international relevance. The theatre has a seating capacity of over 900, and there is also a

second hall that seats approximately 250, located in the School of Dramatic Arts. Large-scale productions will be performed in the main hall of the theatre, while the school hall is intended

for smaller-scale, alternative, independent proposals. Both spaces are equipped with the best lighting, audio systems and infrastructures, making them the perfect venue to host theatre and dance performances as well as concerts, and to become a major cultural hub of the city. “We’ve created something new, a totally priva-

te theatre, where we want to put the American experience into practice, involving institutions, public citizens, businesses and audiences in this cultural venture. It’s a commitment to my homeland and my city,” says Antonio, the founder, promoter and driving force of the theatre. A CHORUS LINE The first show that the Teatro del Soho will host is the musical, A Chorus Line, a revival of the original 1975 Broadway production, which will be directed by Baayork Lee and Antonio Banderas himself. The production reflects the experiences of a group of young performers who are auditioning to take part in a musical, and in Málaga Antonio Banderas will be playing the role of Zach, the charismatic director of the show. The production is presented with a script in Spanish, and after premiering in Málaga in October, it will then go on to Madrid and Barcelona. The musical ran for 15 consecutive years in the USA, and features 26 performers on stage. For Antonio Banderas, “it’s a beautiful tribute to youth, artistic purity, and the inevitable sacrifice that lies behind every artistic career”. Effort, hard work, passion, and love for his homeland.

DR. ANA PEDROL AND DR. BRUNO PEREIRA THE DIRECTORS OF ØNE SHARE A VISION:

We believe that the smile and the face mirror who we are and how we feel. If we feel sad we look down, our shoulders also point down, or when we feel excited our eyes are wide open and our body energized. Scientific studies show that it also works the other way around, meaning that, our outside also reflects in our inside. By changing the body posture for example, it affects how we feel. Here is an easy example: if we take a deep breath and focus our attention in our breathing, it relaxes us immediately. Or if we bring the chin up, our chest out and our shoulders up for a while, super heroe posture makes us feel more confident immediately. The same thing happens with the smile. We can start to change how we feel by just smiling. This tells a lot about the power of the smile and how it can shape our life’s. If we don’t feel comfortable about our smile we won’t be a confident person. This issue can shape our personality, career and opportunities. We truly believe that “we don’t smile because we are happy, we are happy because we smile” and that’s what makes our profession so passionate.

Øne Clinic is dedicated to facial aesthetics, treating the smile and the face as a whole, unique for every person respecting nature with and holistic and organic approach. Traditionally, when someone tries to improve his or her smile they often go to a dentist they might have heard about. Once the smile is treated, more often than not, they realize that the teeth are too white and too big and perfectly aligned and there is a lack of harmony and balance to the face. The smile is the centrepiece of beauty, and with that in mind the smile needs to balance and enhance facial aesthetics, not detract it. When the aesthetic dentist works side to side with the plastic surgeon to enhance facial aesthetics, the outcome is more natural since balance and harmony all starts with the face and both specialists work towards one goal. The lips and teeth cannot be treated separately, otherwise, we will never achieve a truly organic and natural result. By working together, the Aesthetic dentist can create beautiful smiles that harmonize with the face. Øne is more than a clinic it’s a place designed to take care of the wellbeing.

WORLD VISION Interview with Daniel Shamoon

One family to another; Daniel meets a Maasai family in a remote village in Kenya. All three members of this family fully recovered from tuberculosis thanks to the programme supported by the Shamoon family.

Looking for the best investment you can make in yourself and in the world? When discussing investments, one might think of real estate, bonds or startups. But the kind of investments the Shamoon family have been making over the past 20 years are life changing! Together with World Vision, an international charity working in around 100 countries, the Shamoon’s have given hope to over one million children around the world. In partnership with World Vision the Shamoon family has helped to save the lives of children suffering from malaria, tuberculosis and malnutrition through: · Training health workers · Accurate and quicker diagnosis · Improving access to healthcare services · Life-saving food and medication All this means that more children will have a healthier, happier start in life! 28

The return on the Shamoon’s investment in World Vision projects has been transformational and sustainable. Daniel Shamoon speaks about his journey with World Vision and his recent trip to Kenya where he had the opportunity to witness

“It really is the

trading equities before moving to continental Europe in 2000 to concentrate on hospitality and property development. We took over Bursha Holdings my sister Jennica and I in 2006 and have grown the company into a major retail, commercial and residential business. We also own the SLH brand in London which has a network of hotels in hundreds of destinations. What are some of your interests? Architecture, interior design, skiing, vintage cars, travel. What was it that first inspired you to donate to World Vision? I saw World Vision on the news and I wanted to get involved in whatever way I could to start making a difference to people’s lives. The child sponsorship programme was an easy and impactful way to get involved, so I started sponsoring a

child. As my life changed – I got married and started a family – I wanted to get more involved. I felt very fortunate for what I had in life and I realised a lot of people were not as fortunate, especially through the regular updates on the life of the child I was sponsoring and the world around them. I contacted World Vision, asked how I could get more involved and started to raise funds for individual projects through my personal donations and fundraising events. Every time we’ve become involved in a project, we’ve really seen the growth, the fruition and the development into self-sustainability. Seeing the impact on the ground over a period of years, how your money is being spent and how it is impacting lives directly makes all the difference. So, every time we got involved in a project I felt connected to it. Tell us about your recent trip to Kenya. If you’ve never been to a place where World Vision works and seen directly the impact that it has, going on a trip really makes everything come together. Without visiting I would never really have seen how much we’ve done and how much World Vision has achieved for people’s lives. I will always be grateful to World Vision for making it possible for me to really experience something that’s given me more back than any other thing apart from having a family of my own. Did anything surprise you during your trip? I was shocked when a young woman who I met in the slums of Nairobi told me she was only nine years old when she had her first baby! Let me share... LINDA’S STORY Her childhood was spent scavenging the enormous dump near her home in the slums of Nairobi, Kenya. A place full of unlikely treasures. And horrible dangers. Vulnerable children are targeted there, by men who offer to buy them ‘nice’ things in return for sexual favours. This situation for some girls is so

World Vision

“I will always be grateful to for making it possible for me to really experience something that’s given me more back than any other thing apart from having a family of my own.” desperate that they sell their bodies just to afford sanitary products. ‘Pretty’ girls may even be used as mules, carrying drugs and guns for the slum gangs. This is where Linda’s childhood was lost. TWAWEZA Her second chance started in her teens. Through a project funded by World Vision, Linda went back to school after she had her baby. She also received training from World Vision on tailoring and fashion design and was given a sewing machine. Today, Linda no longer rummages through the dumpsite, targeted by preying men. Instead, she scouts the area looking for at-risk girls suffering from the same hardships she went through. Linda now runs a programme for youth which she started in 2010, Twaweza meaning “we can”. At Twaweza young people are mentored and trained on public speaking, beadwork and all aspects of sewing and design. The design school is currently training 20 young people. They produce colourful crafts and jewellery for local markets and export to three countries. Linda’s outreach doesn’t stop there. She gives talks in local schools, encouraging girls to protect and care for themselves. The project also makes hygienic sanitary pads (which they distribute to schools and sell to the community), and advocates for vulnerable girls to receive support from the sexual health clinic located in the same building as Twaweza. Her vision is to have a company and resource centre for young people: “I want to help grow our society together to make the world a better place,” said Linda.

MORE THAN A SURVIVOR Out of the ashes of the dumpsite, Linda has emerged as far more than a survivor. She is strong, happy, confident and an inspirational role model for her daughter. Thanks to support when she was at her most vulnerable, Linda’s now transforming the future for many more young people; giving them the chance to make something beautiful out of their lives. And Linda’s own daughter, now 11, can enjoy a childhood her mother never could, playing football with friends in the playground and crafting with her mum at home. She dreams of being a pilot. Maybe she can. Is there anything you’d like to say to people who may be considering supporting a charity? When you actually understand the impact you can have on people’s lives it makes day to day issues seem irrelevant. It really is the best investment you can make in yourself and in the world. Something that I saw visiting the projects is the impact that goes on for generations, changing people’s lives in a way that I could never have imagined before. PUENTE ROMANO SUMMER GALA IN AID OF WORLD VISION For seven years the Puente Romano Beach Resort & Spa has been partnering with World Vision and hosting an annual summer gala in aid of the charity. This year the gala will be held on Thursday 15th August and all money raised will go towards preventing child malnutrition around the world. abiz Muñoz was born in Madrid in 1980. Non-conformist, determined, with a distinctly rebellious look, he became the youngest chef to be awarded a third Michelin star for his restaurant, DiverXo. His cuisine is hedonistic and creative, but above all, risky and full of nuances. An outstanding gastronomic experience that leaves no one indifferent. To get to the origins of Dabiz Muñoz’s passion for cooking, we must go back to his childhood. Although no one in his family worked in the catering trade, at the early age of nine he was already cooking some dishes for his parents. At the age of 17, a very young Dabiz goes to the Escuela de Hostelería de Torrejón de Ardoz in Madrid, and completes his training in highly renowned restaurants, such as Balzac, where he does an internship while still studying. After finishing his training, he gets a job in Viridiana, with Abraham Gardía, and goes on to work his way through the kitchens of other famous Madrid restaurants, such as Catamarán or Chantarella.

defines as “an attempt to find common ground between distant cultures”. Dabiz has the entire concept in his head. His colleagues say that when preparing a dish, he can put together in his head more than 15 chosen ingredients from his many trips, and adjust the proportions before even starting to cook. The result is creative, suggestive dishes with countless nuances, which combine magic, work and dedication. A cascade of sensory stimuli that is constantly changing, as a result of the eternal non-conformity which has brought Dabiz international success.

AN OUTSTANDING GASTRONOMIC EXPERIENCE THAT LEAVES

NO ONE INDIFFERENT

A SPECIFIC CONCEPT Having just turned 20, the chef decides to go to London to continue immersing himself in a cuisine without borders. He starts working in Orrey, then as a pastry chef in Hakkasan, specialising in Asian cuisine, later going on to further his professional career in other restaurants, such as Locanda Locatelli, Pearl or Nobu. At that time, David, which is his original name, already had one very clear idea in mind: to open his own restaurant in Madrid. Intent on fulfilling his dream, he comes back to the capital and starts to become known by the name of Dabiz Muñoz. An obvious declaration of intent of a non-conformist, indomitable character. The chef was determined to create a restaurant with a different, unique cuisine concept, and this is how the restaurant DiverXo was conceived in 2007. In order to to open it, Dabiz had to sell his apartment, invest all his savings and take out a number of loans. Nothing could hold him back from putting into practice the idea of his own culinary concept, which was very different from the mainstream at that time. MICHELIN STARS The results didn’t take long to follow. The name DiverXo started to become famous, and three years after opening, the restaurant was awarded its first Michelin Star and Dabiz received the Premio Nacional de Gastronomía. Its second Star came two years later, and in 2013, the entire team of the restaurant celebrated receiving its third. The Michelin Stars have been the best possible recognition for a cuisine that is radical, risky, and full of fusion and nuances, with flavours that bring together the very best of Europe, America and Asia. Dishes of complex harmonies and a simply perfect technique, which he

INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION DiverXo is not the only place where you can try Dabiz Muñoz’s cuisine. In 2012, the chef opened StreetXo, also located in Madrid but with a more casual atmosphere. Always eager to extend his culinary concept around the world, in 2016 he opened StreetXoLondon, in London’s Mayfair. The restaurant in London probably won’t be the last one Dabiz opens in the next few years. He’s considering countries such as China, Singapore, Japan or the US, where the chef dreams of one day being able to take his risky, surprising culinary concept. “I don’t accept dogmas of any kind. I’m very competitive with myself, and I want to make my clients happy, “ he says. Married to the presenter, Cristina Pedroche, Dabiz hasn’t lost his rebellious image. He does defend, however, that globalisation has brought different tastes when it comes to understanding a particular culinary experience. “When someone leaves the restaurant unhappy, it’s because they were expecting something that Diverxo isn’t. It’s not the restaurant’s fault, nor the client’s. We’re not a typical three-star, “ he says, when asked about how he takes criticism. Dabiz Muñoz defines his cuisine and the original, extravagant space at DiverXo as a dream world where everything is possible. The chef’s ideas are expressed on plates which are called “canvases” in his restaurants. Every day, Dabiz becomes an artist in order to draw new, unprecedented ways of understanding the gastronomic experience, in a cuisine that he himself defines as “hedonistic, greedy, creative and avant-garde”. For the chef, “cooking is the most affordable of all luxuries.” EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE 35

D

EXPERIENTIAL Architecture “Architecture is more than program, budget, project management or construction documents. Architecture is about how design affects people.” 48

ARK EL02.indd 48

S

pecialising in luxury villas, ARK offers its customers global services ranging from the initial concept to the overall implementation of each project. Your work strategy comprises construction and development, project management, interior design and landscaping. The different phases that give life to an ARK project have been conceived and devised to fulfill that goal while respecting quality parameters defined by the firm. Nothing is left to chance. The study of the land, the lifestyle of the families, a personalized architectural idea, the interior design and an exhaustive technical and implementation phase all give the service they offer a standard of luxury, something your clients seek for the project of their lives.

Why does ARK develop its projects in Costa del Sol? It’s a bit of a coincidence: we -the founders- are from this area and we started our professional career here. But we find that Costa del Sol is a geographically privileged environment. It has a unique D NA, and it’s very powerful when it comes to lifestyle. This has led to the development of several luxury holiday resorts that accommodate the customer target with which we work. We specialize in creating villas for a specific client with specific needs, a specific situation and for a specific location. We don’t produce serial architecture. Our work is comparable to that of making “custom suits”. We are like high gastronomy applied to Architecture.

MANUEL R. MORICHE What does it mean that ARK Architects does not build houses, but rather, creates experiences? For us, the definition of Architecture is to create a space where people can carry out their daily routines. But, above all, we must not ignore the fact that architecture is a multisensory experience. We aspire to transmit an experience that helps people improve their daily lives, to make things easier, and so they can achieve something even more sublime: happiness.

Architecture always moves between two areas: Art and utility. How does ARK Architects work to strike a balance in those areas? Finding the point in which a project exquisitely fulfills the function for which it is designed, but also being able to break through the barriers that the function imposes, and aspiring to achieve absolute beauty, is the key to the entire project. If you are able to reach that point, you will be able to create something truly unique and inspiring. We reached the goal by applying 50% talent and 50% hard work, understanding the client’s needs, the location, our experience… ARK does not carry out simple architectural projects. The company gets involved much more. How do you do it? From the conviction that Architecture is the materialization of an idea. If we are able to conceive very interesting ideas, but if we fail at the time of materializing them efficiently, we fail as architects. In addition, we understand that the process cannot be divided. That is why we created our construction division a while back that materializes ideas efficiently and accurately. This is the concept that underlies the ARK philosophy. WE ARE LIKE HIGH GASTRONOMY APPLIED TO ARCHITECTURE

ARK no realiza simples proyectos arquitectónicos.

Due to the last economic crisis, the Andalusian community has, just as other communities did, implemented a tax reduction regulation for the property purchase in order to relaunch the real estate sector. Thus, by Royal Decree-Law 1/2009 and 8/2010, a 2% reduction of the Property Transfer Tax has been approved, as long as it fulfills specific requirements, and as long as the purchased property is being sold within a period of five years.

WHAT ARE THE ESTABLISHED REQUIREMENTS? That the natural or legal person should purchase the property within the exercise of their business activity to which the Real Estate Agent’s Chart of Account (Plan General De Contabilidad Del Sector Inmobiliario) can be applied. That the purchased property should be incorporated into the current assets of the company, i.e, the property has to be on sale. The purchased property should be sold within a five-year period after its purchase. Additionally, the purchase should be subject to Property Transfer Tax. In that way, the purchases subject to VAT are excluded. From a formal point of view, we can see how important it is to expressly mention the previous requirements in the public title deed and the registration in the corresponding section of the CNAE (National Classification of Economic Activities). Then, the tax must be settled at the reduced rate of 2% within thirty business days after the granting of the deed. This implies a considerable saving in the purchase of the property. In the event of non-compliance of one of the aforementioned requirements, the difference between the applicable rate and the reduced rate paid at the purchase shall be settled. The effect of this law, beyond the scenario in which it has been established and approved, supports and improves the investment. It also eases the heavy burden of purchase costs, sometimes at a non-competitive price, and, needless to say, it contributes to stimulate the market. This law can make the investment exceptionally attractive. Indeed, if the companies manage to purchase and sale the properties within two years, they can, in addition to the reduced rate of 2% of the property transfer tax, have a tax base set a 15% instead of 25% for the Corporate tax.

Beyond the idea of how attractive the lifestyle of Costa del Sol is, and beyond all the efforts made to promote this idea and make it real, it is important to make our lifestyle more and more appealing For that, we must use everything we have in our power to encourage the investors and enable them see that Costa del Sol is a safe asset with a good price and a reasonable investment cost.

y story: In 2010 I came for the first time to Marbella for a short holiday and I felt that it would become new home. A new dream was born in my heart. Returning from my holiday in Constanta, Romania and to my job at that time in Volksbank as agency manager, I couldn’t stop thinking about living in Marbella. After five years in retail banking, it was also the time for a career change. I am quite creative and I absolutely love theme events, so a marketing job at Nikki Beach seemed to be my new goal. In 2011 I moved to Marbella with a job contract with Nikki Beach. I worked for the company for three years, mainly in Marbella and Ibiza. As Public Relations and Events Manager I made plenty of contacts and I acquired so much knowledge about high-end service and the jet set clientele. My next adventure was Dubai where I worked for Zuma in DIFC. I had a wonderful time there, and I’m still so thankful for those incredible days. I worked with such a good team of professionals in one of the most high-end hotspots of Dubai. In 2014 I moved to London where I worked in the most prestigious private members club: The Arts Club, in Mayfair. For two years this was my home. I loved that job so much and my time at The Arts Club. It’s a small world in the luxury hospitality field and there’s certainly something special about the staff. As the clients of these type of venues, the staff members tend to be the jet setters of the hospitality world. We all have an ability to change, to relocate, to start fresh, to embrace new projects and ideas, to meet people from any corner of the world with a smile on our faces and a positive mind. That’s why I love it so much. After two years in London, I decided to move back to my beloved Spain. I grew up by the sea, so ultimately, I knew I have to be close to the sea and the sunny days...

I love to build bridges between ideas and actions by connecting people.

I worked In Ibiza for Blue Marlin Ibiza Group for two consecutive seasons on their new project: Coricancha – Nikki Restaurant & Bar. At the end of 2017 I returned to the place I call home… Marbella. It is a very special connection I have with this place. After living in different countries and travelling quite a lot, I certainly reached to the conclusion that for me at least, Marbella has this great positive energy that I couldn’t feel anywhere else. Each place has its own magic and beauty, but the lifestyle here is unique. Once back in Marbella, I was contacted to join an exciting project, the new private members club of Puente Romano: Owners Club. I am proud of what has been achieved so far and I have many plans for this year. This is just the beginning of this unique and beautiful concept. OWNERS CLUB PHILOSOPHY Owners Club is a unique private members club, located in the heart of the spectacular resort of Puente Romano, Marbella, offering unparalleled access to the most exclusive and exciting experiences in the area. INTERNATIONAL TAX PLANNING and its Importance when Investing By Miguel Angel de la Fuente

A

s a consequence of an increasingly globalised world, and with the emergence of big multinational corporations that are steadily capturing every sector of the market, to a greater or lesser extent, public opinion has become aware of instruments and places as exotic as offshore companies, private foundations, trusts and tax havens, conducive to tax avoidance or tax fraud, and even to the perpetration of criminal practices, such as corruption, crimes against the Public Treasury and money laundering. It is necessary to distinguish criminal behaviours - contrary to the law and punishable, from aggressive tax planning - ethically and socially reprehensible, but carried out within the bounds of legality. Although economic and financial globalisation has not entailed such a profound tax harmonisation, and this has led to loopholes and legal channels conducive to the practice of fiscally aggressive investments, it is nonetheless true that in recent years there have been advances of various kinds, especially in the European Union. Within it, harmonisation standards have been established, always respecting the principle of sovereignty of the Member States which, let us not forget, is what has kept the edifice of the European Union in place for more than sixty years.

58

International tax planning, interpreted in its broadest sense, aims to harmonise the different legal systems in place in the member states, each with individual and sovereign interests, with the purpose of not discouraging economic, commercial activity, but rather making it more feasible to attract investors. If the combination of the aspects of the factual assertion (residence of the taxpayer, rendering of services or realisation of a commercial activity, and the ownership of property in a particular location) transcends state borders, this will result in an interaction and overlap of national taxing rights. Faced with this multinational phenomenon, International Tax Law will coherently try to establish mechanisms to prevent phenomena such as double taxation, double non-taxation - a new objective - and tax fraud; and to coordinate the tax needs of the different States involved, always keen for public revenue, with those of the economic agents. The complexity of this branch of law lies in the coexistence of the internal regulations of the States, Double Taxation Agreements (DTAs) and rules derived from integration processes, such as that of the European Union. This interaction, and the way in which the liability for taxation of a given factual assertation to different sovereignties is amended, can only be

understood through an overall understanding of this complex regulatory system. Nowadays the vast majority of countries have assumed the principle of worldwide income to determine the tax applicable, albeit combined with the principle of territoriality, identified with the source of said income and restricted tax liability. However, the growing delocalisation of production and the processes of economic globalisation and internationalisation have generated debate since the end of the last century about the prevalence of the principle of worldwide income over that of source of income, as well as its combination with the exemption method or tax credit to relieve the interstate tax burden. The Model Convention designed by the UN as a guide for the negotiation and signing of bilateral treaties (in contrast to the OECD) offers rules designed to meet the needs of developing countries, generally capital importers, and therefore intended to shift the weight of taxation to the State of the source, where the investment or activity takes place. The aim of this article is not to analyse these dialectics between the fundamental principles of international taxation, but to point out its dynamic nature, and the impact of the differences among the States, in accordance with their

own productive, economic and political idiosyncrasies, on the complexity of the system. This complexity, and the in-depth comprehension of it, in pursuit of effective tax and legal solutions for transnational economic activity, will be the core of our Practice. Of course, taxation can never be the main reason to internationalise but must follow the business, but it is unquestionably of utmost importance, and incorrect planning generates various kinds of inefficiencies - not only fiscal - that hinder business and ultimately, increase costs. International Tax Planning requires analysing the tax regulations in the areas of incidence: the investor’s place of residence - where a reduction of the tax burden or its deferral will be claimed; the intermediate country - where a limited company has been created - which would operate as a pipeline in the repatriation of earnings or reinvestment, and which is usually a country with an extensive ILC network and an attractive holding regime: at this point it is necessary to refer to anti-abuse measures, such as the beneficiary owner clause, and the cancelling of benefits in the Conventions for conduit companies, and which, nevertheless, have to be interpreted with certain restraint and legal rigour by the Tax Administrations and the Courts, especially within the Community, the guarantor of the right of establishment and to provide services, of free movement of people and capital; and, finally, the destination of the investment - where a reduction in the tax burden is also claimed - all this as a demonstration of tax mitigation, always within the strictest legality; adequate international tax planning must be dissociated from the phenomena of tax avoidance and evasion; we insist, it is a fiscally effective proposal among the different possibilities that the arbitration of sovereign tax authorities permits, by means of their internal rules, ILC or integration processes to a given factual assertion. Indisputably, no planning would be effective without a thorough knowledge of the tax systems in place in the different States to assess the factual assertion, given the differences in direct taxation between them, which may begin, for example, with the backbone principle of its tax system, whether it be a State in which the principle of worldwide income or territoriality is established. Therefore, coordination and collaboration between lawyers and tax advisors in the different states involved is not only advisable, but necessary. The possible location of the productive activity (influenced by regulatory, labour, environmental, socio-political elements, etc.) implantation methods (subsidiary, branch, commission agent, etc.), the existence of special regimes or incentives, the repatriation of income flows, investment financing, regulation of expatriates and transfer prices are classic factors to study when conducting international tax planning.

INTERNATIONAL TAX PLANNING AIMS TO HARMONISE THE

DIFFERENT LEGAL SYSTEMS All this is understood as inextricably connected, and the existence of an ILC, and its accordance with the respective internal rules, will be fundamental in the analysis. The inexistence of an ILC is a presumption which discourages investment, because unless its amendment is foreseen in the respective internal legislations of the States, the income generated will be taxed in both States. In contrast, the application of an ILC brings into play a series of elements that favour the implementation of a transnational investment focus. It goes without saying that the existence of an ILC, and internal rules and their articulation - from the superior hierarchy of the ILC - is a source of legal security for operators, and therefore encourages their investments. SPANISH REGULATORY FRAMEWORK AND INCENTIVES FOR INTERNATIONAL INVESTMENT Over the last thirty years, Spanish legislation has provided a wide range of measures and incentives for individuals, either subject to IRPF or IRNR (regulations that also apply to non-resident entities) and IS for companies, which have favoured the international implementation of Spanish companies as well as attracting foreign capital. Among the different elements of current Spanish legislation, though not an exhaustive list, we can highlight the following: (i) the exemption of dividends and capital gains from foreign affiliates, subject to compliance with the requirements of participation, maintenance and qualitative identity between the IS and company tax contributed abroad, and which article 22 of Law 27/2014, of November 27, regulating the IS, extends to incomes obtained abroad through a Permanent Establishment (PE) and those derived from the transmission of a PE. Worthy of note is the anti-abuse measure that blocks the application of the exemptions when the investee or the PE are located in a country or territory classed as a tax haven, except when it is a member state of the European Union, and the taxpayer can prove that its constitution and operations respond to valid commercial reasons, and that it carries out economic activities; (ii) the extensive ILC network, with more than eighty treaties signed and more under negotiation or being signed; (iii) the special tax regime for “inpatriates” (the famous Beckham Law),

which underwent significant reform a few years ago, and allows taxpayers to choose between paying IRNR or IRPF during the tax period in which the change of residence is made and for the following five years, subject to compliance with certain requirements, (iv) the ETVE system of articles 107 and 108 of the aforementioned law, as a vehicle for channelling foreign investments and has a number of characteristics which differ from other European holding regulations. Ultimately, a large number of different factors and elements influences international tax planning; furthermore, in recent years, as a result of the economic recession that began in the middle of the last decade and the consequent loss of tax revenue by the States, progress has been made in terms of information exchange, transparency and fraud prevention, material that is not dealt with in this article and which has a growing impact on international tax planning. International tax planning as a legal practice will be increasingly determined by state initiatives and, particularly, by those carried out within the EU and OECD to avoid tax fraud and favour the exchange of international tax information, attacking aggressive tax planning and the erosion of tax bases (BEPS). Based on interrelated, pervious socio-political contexts, citizens themselves, as part of a world converted into a gigantic social network, will play a fundamental role in the advances to come, influencing institutions and states under pressure to consolidate business, tax and social regulations. One might wonder to what extent the principle of state sovereignty will be affected when most decisions on direct taxation - and the consequent impact on the amounts collected by national treasuries - are reached beyond national parliaments, if such an event were to occur. In any case, to conclude, two basic ideas; the first, reiterating the first commandment of International Taxation: taxation must follow the business, the economic substance: the second, Spain benefits from very favourable fiscal instruments for the internationalisation of Spanish companies and the capture of foreign resources and capital. THE ULTIMATE BOHO-CHIC REFUGE An hour from the bustling city of Lisbon, on the Alentejo coast, the most elite best-kept secret can be found, often referred to by international media as “the Hamptons of Europe”, or more colloquially, “the trendy village where the rich and famous wish to look poor”.

So near, and yet so far… Name-dropping typically includes the regulars, such as Madonna, Philippe Stark, the Grimaldi family, Christian Louboutin, Richard Branson, Zach Goldsmith, Amancio Ortega’s family, and a long list of VIPs from Paris. You would find more quads and Morgans than Bentleys there, of course. Beyond the “people” facade, there is a shared attraction to the “back to the roots... in style” way of life, which makes a unique setting of the 15,000 hectares of agricultural land which faces the Atlantic, stretching along 50 km of stunning unspoilt beaches, with zero construction for up to 2 km inland behind the high dunes. Don’t expect sea views. In Comporta that would sound politically incorrect.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

AT HOME WITH Gabriel

Rocamora By Ana Pavón

Tell us a little about yourself, your life, your story. I started off in Benidorm with a nightclub called 007. It was called that because all the tourists in Benidorm were English, and at that time, James Bond films were very popular. He was in fashion. Then I opened several clothing stores in Alcoy, where I manufactured my clothes. The business worked like a charm. After that, I moved to the Canary Islands, to Playa del Inglés, and set up several clothing stores and restaurants. It was at a time when there were no exclusive fashion brands in the Canary Islands. The decision was a huge success. Then I came to Marbella for the 25th anniversary of the Marbella Club, invited by a friend. Of course, I was accompanied by my partner, Elsa, who is highly qualified in fashion, stylish and beautiful, which is essential to mingle with the jet set, or get invited to the renowned parties... These were my beginnings in Marbella. I met Sean Connery at that party. Back then, he was the protagonist of James Bond, Secret Agent 007. I had the disco, 007, and several boutiques called 007. That was when I decided to move permanently to Marbella. Again, it was a success. The following winter I came and bought a store in Puerto Banus, and opened my first store in Marbella. I left Benidorm and the Canary Islands, and settled here. 30 years have gone by since then. So who is Gabriel Rocamora? Did you know you wanted to be an investor from an early age? Are entrepreneurs born or made? I consider myself a down to earth person, I make friends easily. That’s why it wasn’t hard for me to get into Marbella’s social scene. I’ve met all the most influential people of Marbella’s nightlife, and I was able to fit in very quickly. Being an entrepreneur was in my blood, maybe that’s why it’s been very easy for me to build businesses. The times we lived in also helped a lot.

A historical or contemporary reference who you admire? There’s a personality here in Marbella who I’ve admired from the first day I saw him - as you might expect - Don Jai“Believe in fate, which me de Mora y Aragón. EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

How do you see the youth of today? They’re a little crazy, obsessed with their mobiles, the worst enemy of young people. They’re very egotistical, and only think about themselves, generally speaking. As a prominent entrepreneur and businessman, could give us some good advice? I can’t advise you on that, because I believe an entrepreneur is born. The main things are having good ideas, believing in yourself and giving it a go, whether it works or not. It’s better not to tell people your ideas, so they don’t discourage you. You can ask, but only on an advisory level. Have you got any funny anecdotes about things that have happened to you in Marbella? I get up every day and just live life. I have a anecdote per day. 66

Are you a man of firm convictions? Have you put theory into practice? I know my own mind. Whatever I do, I do with utter conviction, always putting one foot in front of the other. I’m prudent, and I always have a card up my sleeve, in case the business fails. What have your most important achievements been? My three children, and the education I have been able to provide them with. What do you usually do in your free time? Have fun and do lots of sport. I especially love playing golf. A Hole in One - I managed to get a Hole in One - in fact, I’ve won many competitions. You have a villa with an extraordinary design, which is totally different from

the architecture that is carried out today in Marbella. It’s very original... Tell us, who’s the architect? Angel Taborda. He was an Argentinian architect, and one day while having lunch with him, I told him I wanted to have a house built. He designed a house for me, and then he had the house built, exactly like the design he’d come up with at that lunch. (He was a well-known architect for the Hanging Houses of la Quinta). I can see a magnificent James Bond 007 sign at the entrance to your house. Tell us the story of the logo, the 007 by which you are recognised, and not only here in Marbella. It came from a nightclub I had in Benidorm,

I’M PRUDENT, AND I ALWAYS HAVE

A CARD UP MY SLEEVE where all the tourists were English, at the time when James Bond movies were in vogue, and things went so well for me that I kept the name and logo in all my businesses. Until an English firm 007 came along, and made me pay royalties for using the name, so I ended up getting rid of the name and the logo. Do you like to delegate?

I don’t like to delegate, I do everything myself. Any hobbies? Football and golf. Lastly, define what true luxury is for you. A good woman as a companion at a good dinner. For me, time isn’t luxury, because I always have all the time in the world, being the highly organised man that I am. EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE 67

EN CASA DE

Gabriel

Rocamora

Abandoné Benidorm y Canarias y me instalé aquí.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

MANOLO

SANTANA By Rafael Barrio

We’re meeting Manolo Santana at his leisure complex in Marbella, Racquets Club, on a beautiful, sunny day in May. Tell us, how long have you been in this wonderful area of Marbella? 37 years - and will be for the rest of my life. What was it that brought you here? The friendliness of the Andalusian people, as well as the guarantee of good weather - it’s sunny practically all the time. At what age did you hold a racquet for the first time, and where was it? At the age of 10, at the Velázquez Club in Madrid. What were your beginnings in the world of tennis like? Difficult, as it was an elitist sport, and my family was very humble. But thanks to my mother and the Girón family, they made it possible for me to play. Who do you remember most fondly from those early days? My mother. She was indisputably the person behind what I was, and what I still am. It’s said that, thanks to you, the Spanish got their love of tennis. What would you say to that? People didn’t know if the ball was square or round, and I had the opportunity to play for Spain all over the world, so that’s how the passion for this sport started. What was your first triumph in tennis, and how do you remember it? The first Children’s Tournament in Madrid. How old were you? I was 10, I dedicated it to my mother, my lifelong heroine. How many Grand Slams have you won in your extensive career?

4 Grand Slams, 2 Roland Garros, 1 Wimbledon, 1 US Open and 1 Grand Slam doubles. If you had to choose one Grand Slam, which would it be? Wimbledon, the cathedral of tennis. Any tennis player’s dream. How many titles have you achieved in your career? There are many, a whole lifetime... The number of titles doesn’t matter, dedication and passion are the guiding forces in my life. For Manolo Santana, who is currently the most complete tennis player? There’s no such thing. Each player has something special... but indisputably, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Nova Djokovic are excellent. Do you have in mind any pending commitments to surprise us with? I don’t have any. My motto is always to keep moving forward with humility and respect. Do you still play tennis, and how often? I play tennis and train in the gym 6 times a week, when I’m in Marbella. What advice would you give an emerging player? Discipline, perseverance and NEVER EVER give up. What would you highlight about your life in Marbella? It’s paradise, it has everything. The people, the climate, the diversity of nationalities, where everyone feels like family. MARBELLA IS HOME FOR ALL OF US

Camilla Läckberg is one of the world´s most successful and innovative authors. Her books are sold in over 60 countries and have been translated into 43 languages. Before she became one of Sweden’s most popular crime writers, Camilla Läckberg (b. 1974) worked as a marketing director and product manager for several years. Her first two crime novels, Isprinsessan (The Ice Princess) and Predikanten (The Preacher), received rave reviews from the Swedish press and quickly found a large readership. But her big breakthrough came

sold, Läckberg’s next adventure will be a psychological suspense duology. THE FAYE PROJECT Camilla Läckberg’s new project is quite different from her previous novels. It’s edgy and suggestive with a clear element of psychological suspense. At the same time, we have the full spectrum of the type

With 23 million copies sold of her Fjällbacka-series, she is now taking on a new challange: a two-book series taking place outside of the Fjällbacka universe. when Stenhuggaren (The Stonecutter) was nominated for The Crime Novel of the Year award in 2005, and also when Olycksfågeln (The Stranger) and Tyskungen (The Hidden Child) were made lead titles in Bonnier’s Book Club. Camilla’s books have gained even more popularity after being adapted into a TV-series, produced by SVT (Swedish Television). In April 2017 her tenth book in the Fjällbacka-series, Häxan, was released – claimed to be her best novel so far. In 2019 Camilla received a diamond book for Häxan, since it has sold in over 300 000 copies in Sweden. And in the spring of 2019 heralds the global launch of The Golden Cage, the first of two dark and suspenseful novels by Camilla Läckberg. After ten internationally bestselling novels and over 23 million copies

of characters and plots Camilla’s books are famous for. Her existing readers will recognize and love this duology as well as appreciate it for all its new twists and turns. Reaching a wider audience was very important to the author when writing this duology. Although the Fjällbacka readers are important she also wanted to appeal to readers who won’t shy away from what’s modern. Women who are drawn to social media, and attracted to matters of female empowerment and contemporary culture. The story centres on Faye, an intelligent woman who has been blinded by love for a man who doesn’t deserve her. When he betrays and crushes her she swears to get redemption by any means necessary. Readers will be able to identify with and

really grow to love Faye. Her thirst for vengeance seems both justified and right, even though it takes some truly dark turns. A clever ending takes us into the second book where Faye’s backstory unfolds as we find out what has happened in her past and what implications that has on her current situation. In elaborate twists and turns, Camilla Läckberg will take us on a rollercoaster ride of mixed emotions. We will both love and hate her elegant heroine and quickly learn that there is always at least two sides to every story.

”A woman´s revenge is beautiful and brutal” THE GOLDEN CAGE By Camilla Läckberg On the surface, Faye appears to have everything. A perfect husband, a beloved daughter and a luxurious apartment in the finest part of Stockholm. But dark memories from her childhood in Fjällbacka haunt her and she feels more and more like she’s trapped in a golden cage. She was once a strong and ambitious woman before she gave it all up for her husband Jack. When he deceives her, Faye’s entire world falls to pieces and she is left with nothing. She is utterly devastated. That is until she decides to retaliate and exact cruel revenge. The Golden Cage is a fearless novel about a woman who is used and betrayed before she decides to take charge of her own fate. A dramatic story about deceit, redemption and revenge. Q&A with Camilla WHY DID YOU WRITE A BOOK ABOUT BETRAYAL AND REVENGE?

IS FAYE A GOOD OR A BAD CHARACTER?

WHAT DO YOU TELL THOSE PEOPLE WHO SAY THAT FAYE TAKES IT TOO FAR?

Because it´s thrilling, creepy and forbidden. Because it´s a very current topic. How far can a woman go? What rights does she have to defend herself and her child? How much darkness can we allow in a woman? We are touching upon these questions as a society now, and it´s important to continue to strive towards equality. But above all it interests me. I do have the luxury to write about things that really fascinate me.

I´m tired of the classification of woman as good or bad. I wanted to bring Faye to life completely, as a full person. I like her a lot. But she also carries a darkness. She´s willing to go very far.

Faye is no saint, and frankly, I´m not interested in dividing woman into categories like ”good” or ”bad”, ”acceptable” or ”unacceptable”. I´m interested in exploring what happens when woman have had enough.

fter carving out a hugely successful modelling and TV career in London, England, Natalie Richardson and her husband moved to Marbella with their two children, India and Thalia. Paul was in the nightclub industry, with clubs both in Marbella and London. After selling up and having to think about schooling for their girls, they settled on Marbella as a home from home. That was 8 years ago. Now Natalie is the soul owner of the Bardou Salon situated in the heart of Puerto Banús. A cutting-edge salon designed to the highest of standards, offering the most up-to-date services on the coast. Natalie opened Bardou after seeing a huge gap in the market for an up-to-date, London-style salon. “I just thought the salons here were so behind. In fact I used to fly back to London every 6/8 weeks to get my colour done.” After starring in the hit reality TV show “Life

on Marbs”, it seemed like the perfect timing to grow a business from the social media platform she had. “I enlisted the help of my friend Adee Phelan, a celebrity stylist who is most famous for the David Beckham mohawk, and together we visualised a layout for the salon. I knew I didn’t want it too girly, and definitely wanted a certain London chicness to the salon, we hand-picked all the items of furnishings from auction houses, including the floor, which is 150 years old, from a Shakespearean playhouse, and the desk, which was the first original desk out of Barclays Bank. The sofa came out of the famous Cafe de Paris nightclub. So every piece has a significant story to tell. I wanted Bardou to be a one-stop shop, so instead of having to travel to different places to get your treatments done, you could come to Bardou and get the full package, hair, nails, extensions, tan, beauty, massage, eyelashes even semipermanent makeup (tattooing).”

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

INTERVIEW WITH

Antonio Cardenal By Ana Pavón

To start off, why don’t you reveal an ‘untold confession’ that you can and want to share with us, now that we’re in 2019? Well, maybe not ‘untold confessions’, but I can tell you things I can admit to! Like when the Bond girls arrived to do an interview for “Octopussy”, and I was working for United Artists. We went to pick them up at the airport. A short gentleman, who turned out to be a policeman, came over to me and made them open up all the suitcases... Of course, as well as all the movie costumes in them, they found submachine guns! Hahaha! All props, of course... He wanted them to declare everything! Well, that was quite a scene! These types of things have given me endless anecdotes!

In a column by Arturo Pérez Reverte, I read that men and women compete for your company... So I feel very flattered to be able to interview you today. This isn’t a gossip magazine, I’m not going to ask you about your personal life… I’d like to get to know you in essence, which is going to be impossible, given the intense life you’ve had, in every sense. 82

You’ve been defined as a genius, kind, loyal, with a great sense of humour. What I like most is ‘your particular outlook on life’, always with a touch of passion, humour and discretion. How much truth is there in that? Do you get up every morning full of adrenaline? Yes, absolutely! And that’s what’s made me successful! Humour has always been essential for me. And when I started working with Estudio Abierto, I was already working with all the big American companies: Fox, United Artists… You started out as Assistant to the Director of Advertising for Warner Bros (Superman), Universal (Jaws, Grease, Jesus Christ Superstar) and Twenty Century Fox (Star Wars). You’ve worked as Head of Advertising for Universal Pictures, Paramount Channel and for Metro Goldwyn Mayer (Jaws, The Sting, The Champ...). You founded your own film production company, producing 22 films to date… Could you be defined as the new Alfred Hitchcock, with Spanish DNA, given the professional similarities that exist between you, from your

beginnings through to your ascent to the world of cinema? Not at all! Alfred Hitchcock is a genius, and I’m not! I’ve been a mere worker in the world of cinema. I’ve had a great time, I’ve done incredible, unbelievable things... Like the premiere of Dracula at Pachá in Madrid. For my bosses, it was a totally crazy idea to have the Dracula premiere - a horror movie - in a nightclub... However, afterwards they sent me a congratulatory letter, because Spain was the country in Europe where the film did best, the country with the highest audience levels. That doesn’t happen now! I had ideas that weren’t normal at the time, new ideas! At the Grease premiere, I was able to count on the collaboration of Miguel Bosé and Ana García Obregón. I held the premiere in a gym, and took all the journalists there to watch the film. I set up stands, where we sold hamburgers and Coca-Cola. Miguel Bosé was at one stand, and Ana at the other. The journalists later gave it great publicity and everyone was talking about the event! That’s why they all signed me up! Nowadays, people are very boring. They’ve got no ingenuity! I worked in all the major companies, except Disney. Now it’s pure marketing... I mean, just pay for advertising and that’s it! There’s no creativity! What differences do you see between present-day cinema and the cinema you worked in? So many! The cinema I knew is unequalled! Because I’ve had a great time, in every sense and in all the jobs I’ve done, in all the companies I’ve worked for. For me, work was fun because I felt free, I had decision-making power, and I was very creative. Now everything involves too much red tape, it’s all marketing, pure and simple... There’s not much creativity! At the present time, everything depends on America and London. Nowadays, if you work for an American company, you’re an ‘intermediary’ with no decision-making power. Back then, I made all the decisions in Spain in terms of marketing. That’s why I wouldn’t go back to working in the world of cinema now.

At the present time, companies like Nextflix, HBO, etc., are proving popular... Yes, indeed, because series are popular, and actors can earn more money in television than in cinema. Now the good technicians choose to work in television, and that’s a shame. But such has been the evolution of the industry! I know you’ve launched Hollywood movies, such as Jaws, or Superman. What were the nights out with the Hollywood actors like when they would come to Spain to promote their movie? Ha ha - I could tell you about many interesting nights... In Spain, all the actors had a great time! Ha ha ha! I remember John Hurt, an actor who starred in the movie Aliens. He said he wanted to get to know Madrid’s nightlife. We went to Pacha and he had a bottle of Magno brandy. I thought he was going to die right there, but I just dragged him back to the hotel. Like I say, they had the time of their lives here! You’ve accomplished great achievements which seemed impossible in Spanish cinema. In your professional life, apart from receiving several Goyas for your film The Fencing Master, as a producer you contracted the services of Roman Polanski himself to bring The Dumas Club to the big screen, with the name The Ninth Gate and starring Johnny Depp, and you managed to get Viggo Mortensen to star in Alatriste. Two magnificent movies and box-office hits. Between Polanski and you - two cinema greats - did sparks fly? Was it hard working with him? Who’s more of a perfectionist? Roman Polanski is a total perfectionist! He’s someone you can learn from every day. For me, it was a pleasure to work with him. All I wanted was to be next to him all day while filming, in order to learn from him. He’s a perfectionist, a genius, and an amazing person! It was a real honour for me to have produced a film directed by Polanski. Johnny Depp is rather distant, whereas Viggo Mortensen is also great professional, but friendlier. If you were to make a new film... Which actors would you choose to cast? Why? Queen of the South, which is about the life of Teresa Mendoza - we were going to make that

movie with Angelina Jolie. She herself was interested in starring as Teresa Mendoza, and told us not to look for another actress. However, I tried to arrange the financing and spent seven years looking for capital to produce the film, unfortunately without success... Later, as Angelina was no longer interested, we were going to cast Eva Méndez. The truth is that either of these two actresses would have nailed

it! They were two very solid roles. Very powerful. I had two scripts, I’d spent the money on Arturo Pérez Reverte’s author’s rights. So in the end, you spend a lot of money, and if you can’t carry out the project, it’s money lost! Not to mention time!

How much does a script cost? In Spanish currency, I used to pay an average of 25 million pesetas. How much would it cost nowadays to make Queen of the South? Like with anything, a budget would have to be established, but it could easily cost between 25 and 30 million euros - for the type of films I produce, of course!

What is it about Arturo Pérez Reverte that you like so much? What’s he like on a one-to-one basis? I know you’ve had dinner together every Friday for the last 28 years, so I’m sure you must have a anecdote in common that you’d like to share with us. There’s a funny anecdote that took place when I met Arturo Pérez Reverte back in the nineties, and I bought the author’s rights of the book The Fencing Master from him. At that time, I don’t know why, haha, I liked caviar, and one day we went to dinner at a restaurant called El Landor, in Madrid. When the waiter came over, Arturo said to me: “The usual, Antonio?” and I replied, “Yes, a little bit of caviar, and don’t ask me for any more royalties!” He burst out out laughing and we’ve remained good friends ever since. We’ve known each other for 28 years now, he’s like a brother to me. It isn’t a typical author-producer relationship. It goes deeper than that, although I have made 7 films based on his novels. Define what success means for you. Are you one of those people who think that after the storm comes the calm, and when you have a problem, you simply wait for it to solve itself with time, or do you face up to it? For me, success is everyone watching my films. For me, success was breaking box-office records at the premiere of Alatriste. It was the most expensive film in the history of Spanish cinema, but it paid off because it was a box-office hit! It was the most popular Spanish film in 2006, the year it premiered. Any temptation to go back to work? No, because now the world of cinema is so highly bureaucratised, there’s no freedom. What do you consider so far to be “your greatest life achievement”? Alatriste! It took 7 years of my life to make it. I found an exceptional protagonist in the actor Vigo Mortensen. He accepted the role of Alatriste against the advice of his American agents, because at the time, he was at the peak of his career after the success of The Lord of the Rings. My only disappointment is not having managed to produce Queen of the South by Arturo Pérez Reverte, back in the day. EXCLUSIVE LIFE MAGAZINE 83

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

ENTREVISTA CON

Antonio Cardenal

No! No!

“Alatriste”!

Andrés Sardá immerses us in the world of the zodiac and astrology, representing the signs and his personality in a unique proposal. Continuing with his See-Now, Buy-Now concept, he presents a collection of swimwear and lingerie with an intimate aesthetic. The air and water signs embellish the swimwear range with strong, bright colours, while those of earth and fire give the lingerie range softer, more delicate tonalities. In this collection, Sardá continues to use his iconic materials, such as tulle, silk, lace and elastic tricots. However, this time he also experiments with maxi nets, fringes, feathers, and metal pieces created by Mar Enrich, which add a sense of opulence. A glamourous, feminine collection, where creativity has the final say.

HIERRO The sunset and everything that surrounds the warm glow of twilight is what defines Solar, the new proposal by Pedro del Hierro, in which colour is the common thread. A journey is traced on the catwalk, going from neutral tones to degradé, passing through reddish and orange shades, with champagne and aqua green adding touches of colour. A colour wheel that transports us to a sunset on the beach. The collection makes allusions to the 90s, with loose silhouettes and generous proportions, without forfeiting sophistication or elegance. Natural fabrics, such as cotton, linen, mohair and silk are mixed with technical finishes, such as polyamide and nylon. The result is three-dimensional, multi-purpose, reversible garments, with positional or all-over prints. Among the designer’s proposals are spectacular red-carpet dresses and other pieces which transition from day to night. A collection with which Nacho Aguayo and Alex Miralles succeed in giving Pedro del Hierro a forward-looking vision to continue consolidating the brand in accordance with the new canons of fashion and beauty. Actresses like Juana Acosta, Blanca Suárez or Belén Cuesta are followers of the firm and avid fans of the floaty silhouettes and the halter-neck, backless dresses, in a collection which exemplifies the good taste and contemporary elegance of this Spanish brand.

Dame Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor, known in the film world as Elizabeth Taylor, was born in London in 1932. Her parents, Francis and Sara, had emigrated to the United Kingdom to do business in the art world, but World War II forced them to return to the USA. Elizabeth was a sweet, confident child. Her remarkable beauty, her self-assurance and her charm made an impact upon first meeting her. A friend of the family insisted that she should do an audition in Hollywood. During the screen test, the producers were so captivated by her

charm that she was given her first opportunity with a role in the short film “There’s One Born Every Minute”. She was just ten years old. A LIFE OF GLAMOUR As the actress grew up, the film industry, by the hand of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, offered her better opportunities. The first commercial success came with “Father of the Bride” (1950), the film that would make her a great Hollywood star. This was followed by others with excellent reviews, such as “Quo Vadis” (1951) “Giant” (1956)

or “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” (1958). And in 1961 she was awarded her first Oscar for “Butterfield 8.” As her fame as an actress grew, so did her glamour. The beauty of Liz Taylor, with her remarkable, suggestive, striking violet eyes, didn’t go unnoticed. At the age of 18 she got married for the first time, to the founder of the Hilton hotel chain, Conrad Nicholas Hilton. The divorce would come only ten months after saying “I do”. Barely a year later, Elizabeth married Michael Wilding, with whom she had her two sons,

Christopher and Michael J. But this marriage also ended in divorce. Shortly thereafter came her third wedding, with the Hollywood producer, Mike Todd, who Liz Taylor had her daughter, Frances Elizabeth, with. He died in a plane crash just a year later. Determined to find love, she married again, this time to the singer, Eddie Fisher. The courtship began when Eddie was still married to the actress’s best friend, Debbie Reynolds. Distressed, Debbie told the press: “... when Elizabeth wants a man, she gets him. It doesn’t matter who she has to step on along the way.”

Despite the Vatican criticising their relationship, nothing could prevent the actors from getting married as soon as they had their respective divorces. The couple was the epitome of glamour among the jet-set. To consolidate their marriage, they decided to adopt a girl, Maria Carson. Life seemed to smile on them with a prospering film career. The marriage to Richard Burton was undoubtedly the actress’s most passionate. During the ten years it lasted, the arguments and reconciliations were constant. After every big fight, Burton would give Liz Taylor a jewel. It was thus that the actress came to wear the Krupp diamond, which cost over a million euros, and La Peregrina Pearl, considered one of the most valuable in the world. Elizabeth loved jewels. “When I was born, I didn’t open my eyes until I was eight days old. But when I did, the first thing I saw was my mother’s engagement ring. I was hooked! “, she would joke. After divorcing Burton, the actress married him again 17 months later, to then separate for good after a few months.

SPLENDID MATURITY As she matured and grew, the actress began to play roles of greater psychological depth, in which she was able to draw on the emotional burden of all her own experiences. In 1966 came her second Oscar, with “Who’s afraid of Virginia Woolf?”. In later life, Elizabeth Taylor was recognised for her humanitarian work in the fight against AIDS, following the death of her friend, Freddie Mercury. As a result, she received the Prince of Asturias Prize, in 1992. A year later, she would receive an honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement. Two more marriages and serious health problems were draining her strength. The actress died in Los Angeles in 2011, hence bringing an end to the most glamourous story of Hollywood. The abiding memory of Elizabeth Taylor lingers with all those who have had the pleasure of seeing her films, which greatly contributed to further enhancing the history of cinema.

THE MOST PASSIONATE LOVE Her marriage to the singer lasted around a decade, but ended abruptly when Elizabeth co-starred with the actor, Richard Burton, in “Cleopatra” in 1963. Although Burton was also married, the chemistry between the two was evident. The director of the film, Joseph L. Mankiewicz, said that being with them on set was “like being locked in a cage with two tigers”.

Born on January 20th, 1906, in Smyrna, Greece, Aristotle Onassis was an ambitious boy from an early age. It was in the River Plate Telephone Company that he started to build up his capital. He would lie about his age, adding on 6 years, and say that he was born in Athens. Legend tells how he requested night shifts to listen to the conversations of stockholders from the USA, Great Britain and Switzerland, and then invest in shares of any company undergoing significant growth which would enable him to earn substantial sums of money. He later got into the business of Greek and Turkish tobacco, with which he obtained lucrative contracts, and meanwhile, he began to focus on the maritime shipping industry. By the age of 28, Aristotle was already a millionaire. Despite the Great Depression of 1929, his business was not negatively affected, and he consolidated his transactions by buying and building cargo ships at a low price. Thanks to his business expertise and power of persuasion, as well as the adept use of certain types of information, his success as an entrepreneur was guaranteed, first in the tobacco industry and later in the naval industry. He got into the cargo ship business thanks to a series of strong investments, and a marriage of convenience to Athina Mary Livanos, member of one of the most important pioneering families in maritime shipping. In 1930, Aristotle Onassis earned his first million dollars in the naval industry, at the age of 25. By 1932, he had become quite an entrepreneur, who already owned oil tankers and whaling ships, expanding his business internationally. In 1954, he closed his biggest financial transaction when he was basically granted the monopoly in oil transportation in Saudi Arabia. Testimony to his resourcefulness, ingenuity and power of persuasion, he was granted a loan of 40 million USD to build new ships, pledging his contract with the Oil Company as security; the amount being, for a time, equal to that of his contract with the company.

Myanmar A MELTING POT OF

A halo of mystery envelops this fascinating country situated between India and China; a melting pot of cultures made up of more than 135 different ethnic groups, each with its own history, culture and language.

Travelling to Myanmar is like travelling back in time. When it attained independence from the British in 1948, the country closed its doors to the world, and only in the last few years have we been able to access one of the most authentic places on our planet. But it’s rapidly changing, so it’s now or never!

All trips to Myanmar begin in its capital, Yangon, a bustling city where centenarian British colonial buildings compete for space with the emerging modern skyline. Visiting the Shwedagon Pagoda and participating in a traditional oil lamp lighting ceremony are an absolute must.

Buddhism is the predominant religion in the Burmese society, as is evident from the many temples and monasteries to be found scattered throughout the country. In Bagan alone, there are more than 2,000 temples and pagodas, built between the 10th and 13th centuries.

Flying over Myanmar is a delight, and the best way to appreciate the diverse landscape of the country: spectacular mountains, rural villages and idyllic, unspoilt islands. My two favourite places, and where I lived the most fascinating experiences, were Inle Lake and Bagan.

Inle Lake is surrounded by mountains, and is home to numerous villages that live off floating gardens and fishing. In the floating gardens, they grow tomatoes and many types of vegetables. It’s impressive to see them work on the boats loaded with mud, as they build the fertile platforms on which they subsequently plant their crops. As for fishing, the fishermen of Inle Lake are famous worldwide for the difficult position in which they fish, keeping their balance on one of the fragile vertices of their canoes.

One of the small towns that impressed me most was In Dein. You need to get there early to enjoy the floating gardens and the ceremonies held in the temples of its hills. It’s an incredible experience to sit with the women who’ve walked for hours to the market, and communicate with them using sign language... This is the only place in the world where I’ve found that they didn’t know what a photo was, and much less a mobile phone! I’ll never forget their expressions of surprise and admiration for something so common to us nowadays.

Bagan is another world; an arid plain dotted with 2,230 temples and stupas, with the mountains on one side, and the Ayeyarwady River on the other. A sensory pleasure, a multitude of sensations that come to mind if I close my eyes… A mystical experience I’ve never had again; contemplating the evening skies over one of its spectacular stupas, the sun going down, the mist enveloping the tall palm trees and temples, and the chant of the monks reciting their mantras in the background... magical!

The Mergui Islands comprise an archipelago off the south coast of Myanmar, in the Andaman Sea, and this is the perfect place to end such a special trip... one that you’ll never forget. We chose an eco-chic luxury beachfront resort, fully integrated into its surroundings, and built using traditional techniques with low environmental impact. We have a natural bay with 600m of beach just for us, surrounded by virgin forest, and trails which allow us to explore the unique flora and fauna of the island. Paradise exists, and it’s in Mergui.

I’m often asked, “So when are you taking us to this place that’s so special for you?”, to which I always reply, “Any month, except when I went!”. And even so, my experience was unbeatable. You should avoid the months from March to June, as temperatures can exceed 40°C. During the rest of the year, you can explore and enjoy this authentic, exciting country - a place you must get to know! As the saying rightly goes - don’t put off for tomorrow what you can do today, then you can do it again and again! This is one of those places to visit sooner, rather than later, so you can go back time after time.

If you want to discover the most authentic countries and relax on the most idyllic islands on the planet, all you have to do is contact us, and we’ll be happy to design the trip of a lifetime for you: CRIS&KIM Travel Designers Avda. MYANMAR Un crisol de culturas UN HALO DE MISTERIO ENVUELVE A ESTE FASCINANTE PAÍS ENTRE INDIA Y CHINA, UN CRISOL DE CULTURAS FORMADO POR MÁS DE 135 GRUPOS ÉTNICOS DIFERENTES, CADA UNO CON SU PROPIA HISTORIA, CULTURA E IDIOMA.

THERE’S A METAPHOR: If a fish is swimming in a dirty tank and it gets sick, do you take it to the vet and amputate the fin? No, you clean the water. What if there was an easy and painfree way to clean up your system? How can you achieve this? By flooding your body with oxygen by using the Oxygenius Vitality Retreat. How does the Oxygenius Vitality Retreat (OVR) work: OVR is a treatment that allows you to breathe highly concentrated oxygen while comfortably sitting(relaxing) in a pressurised chamber. The atmospheric pressure is raised up to three times more than normal. Under these conditions your lungs can gather up to three times more oxygen than usual. This floods your tissues with beneficial oxygen, revitalising your body’s cells. The health and anti-aging benefits of OVR are simply amazing. New research shows that this unique, painless therapy can be highly effective for treating many more conditions than aging. Why not make an appointment and find out yourself?
