From the

It is now time to embrace the agreeable onset of spring and that can only mean one thing. Well, to be accurate quite a few – including banishing bulky winter coats to the back of the wardrobe and venturing to the beach more often – but this issue we are focusing on one: preparing our homes for southern Spain’s unparalleled outdoor lifestyle. As Leo Tolstoy wrote in Anna Karenina, “Spring is the time of plans and projects”, although presumably he wasn’t referring to revamping the poolside furniture in his fictional character’s dacha or modernising the barbecue patio area for visiting aristocrats. In our comprehensive Outdoor Trends section this issue we do look at these and many other décor and improvement ideas for creating an invigorating new al fresco ambience at home or simply enhancing the existing setting for chilling out with the family or entertaining friends. From elegant dining furniture and ultra-functional modular sets to protective shadesails, innovative fire pits and hanging loungers, we highlight the many diverse products – and styles, colours, patterns and finishing details – offered by the Costa del Sol’s premier home decoration experts to help you transform your outdoor area into a chic hub of relaxation and pleasure. Elsewhere this issue, we explore other key areas of the home that could also do with a spring makeover: cutting-edge kitchen options, sophisticated ambient lighting, sumptuous fabrics and statement wallpapers – including some of the latter products specifically created to withstand outdoor conditions. Finally, as spring is a time when wellbeing is, arguably, at its most heightened level, some timely advice from our health correspondent: living near green areas can have beneficial effects on easing stress levels and the risk of cardiovascular complications. Not possible for everyone, of course, but nevertheless all the encouragement we need to enjoy a regular walk to the nearest park or forest to savour the delights of another Mediterranean spring.

Clear Sparkling Pools… and How To Maintain Them By Mike Gregory from Atlas Pools

36

MARCH APRIL 6

Outdoor HL44.indd 36

26/02/16 13:51

The swimming pool is a way of life here in southern Europe so the health of our swimming pools is of paramount importance. This in turn means that they should be a sparklingly clear blue. Due to dust particles, soil, leaves and sun lotions, algae can accumulate if not controlled properly; therefore good maintenance and an efficient filtration system is extremely important.

This equipment removes any contaminants that can alter the chemical balance of the water and reduce its clarity and quality. Naturally, apart from the filtration system it is necessary for any organic material floating in the pool to be removed from the pool regularly; and for those who use it to shower before and after swimming. Until recently treatment of the water has been based on the use of chlorine and bromine-based chemicals which dissolve and destroy bacteria and harmful chloramines. However, as they in turn can affect the chemical composition of the water, it is important to maintain a balance between the alkalinity (80-120 ppm) and calcium (200-400 ppm) levels in the pool. Maintaining those levels at a constant is necessary, but in reality many pools are overdosed with chemicals which are introduced into the water and can leave swimmers with eye and skin irritations.

OUTDOOR TRENDS

There are now new water filtration systems that have automated sensors and controls to keep a constant check on the water as and when required, making chemicals a thing of the past as the chlorine-free process applies ionization technology to ensure your water’s cleanliness. Surveys show that children between one and four years of age are most at risk from drowning. Atlas Pools in Estepona are constantly researching and testing available products to prevent this, from pool fencing and covers to preventative alarm systems that make your pool areas as safe and comfortable as possible for everyone. There are several ways to give your existing pool a facelift. Atlas Pools offer expertise in design, construction and the clever use of materials at their disposal to turn your pool into something exceptional. Also available are a large number of accessories that can be installed, from swim jets to the construction of mas-

sage seats, cascades and mosaic tiles – giving your pool a unique interior finish. New water treatment technology has already been embraced by the likes of Aquavia Spa, who are the largest producer of spas in Europe. As the official distributor for Málaga province and Gibraltar of Aquavia Spa and the official installers of Pebbletec® pools, the Atlas Group is the local specialist in installing ionization water treatment systems in your swimming pool, spa or jacuzzi, as well as being able to upgrade and modernise existing pools in accordance with new technology and finishes. Forever Green With Artificial Grass

Artificial grass has become more popular over the years due to its environmentallyfriendly and low-maintenance qualities. Aesthetically, if the artificial grass is of good quality, it will look extremely natural and beautifully green for 365 days of the year. The grass will always have the wellmaintained appearance of natural turf but without the intensive care that a natural lawn requires. Both projects shown here have been carried out by Art Garden based in Estepona (www.artgarden.es).

Lighting creates the all-important ambience of a living space, whether it is inside or out. Before choosing lighting for indoors, it is advisable to consider the room size, available natural light, the furniture items within that space and the location of your power points so that your light installations are both practical and stylish. To enhance the size of a room, reflect light off walls; and if you want to soften the colours of your walls, perhaps consider directional lighting. Recessed lighting will light up your floors, as opposed to your walls; while suspended lamps in the middle of a room can give off an ambient glow and add a touch of glamour.

Great care should also be taken when considering outdoor lighting options. In southern Europe we are fortunate to be able to enjoy many evenings outside, and lighting up certain features in the garden such as vegetation, a wall or a water feature can really transform your outdoor space into a beautiful area for whiling away the evenings.

Slick Kitchens As the kitchen gains more importance than ever before in the home, it is worth investing in one that is practical and suits the needs of the people living within that particular home. When considering a new kitchen it is always best to make the most of the space that you have in order for your new kitchen to be as functional as possible, with optimum storage to keep surfaces as clear as possible. Maximise on workspace areas as well as facilities to ensure the room works perfectly for you, and try to keep to your budget as new kitchens can often run over the initial costings if not planned properly.

Nature & Life Pre-Fab Ecological Homes And Aquariums With Their Own Ecosystem THIS ISSUE WE LOOK AT TWO COMPANIES WHICH HAVE TAKEN ECO-FRIENDLY TO AN EXTREMELY HIGH LEVEL.

Aesthetically Attractive… and Affordable

Green Magic Homes is a way of living in harmony with nature. It is a revolutionary prefabricated modular building system which makes homes in fibre-reinforced composites with smooth surfaces, washable walls, rounded corners, high strength, natural illumination and endless design possibilities. The company’s kits include: doors and windows made of treated pine, oak or fir, galvanised steel screws, elastomer for sealing component flaps together, packing and assembly manual. They are shipped ready to be installed. Some parts of this technology are manufactured in fibre cement board, which are joined to the FRP modules with nylon ties and sealed with elastomer. They also offer custom designs for a small fee in addition to their customary products. The homes are heated using an eco-bio method, therefore not harming the planet. Only three months after launching their commercial operations, they have seven countries signed for distribution: Canada, Brazil, Israel, Chile, the Dominican Republic and Italy. Five additional countries will be included shortly. This is a particularly good and affordable solution for many countries, as well as being aesthetically pleasing. www.greenmagichomes.com

Have Your Fish ‌ And Eat It Too

If you like fish, - in an aquarium that is, due to their calming and beautiful appea-rance then this company is offering you an excellent option. You can now have your fish and eat what grows on top of the aquarium as well. The Grove Ecosystem is very simple: it’s an intelligent indoor garden which can grow anywhere in a house and uses fish, microbes and plants in concert to produce natural food in a space the size of a small bookshelf. The fish food is the input and the plants are the output, while the microbes make the magic happen in between. This growing technique is called aquaponics and it is already used by greenhouses around the world to meet growing global demand for sustainably grown produce. The result is fresh food and clean tanks. The system grows plants 50 to 75 per cent faster and, double the density, is more productive than normal gardening. It also uses a negligible amount of electricity to power the system. www.grovelabs.io HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Teak Wood

It is quite common with so-called “modern” materials to learn that they have, in fact, been used for centuries. In the case of teak, boat builders have been aware of the material’s valuable qualities for more than 2,000 years although, in a botanical context, it was first formally described by Carl Linneaeus in his 1782 work Supplementum Plantarium. Today it is highly valued for its durability and water resistance, and still used for boat building, as well as exterior construction, veneer, furniture and small wood projects. Consumption of teak does raise some environmental concerns but there has been a growing commitment to sustainable plantation production in seasonally dry tropical areas. It is also completely renewable, unlike plastics and VOCs. Based in Estepona (Agrojardin and C/ Juan Carlos), Tiara Furniture has taken the high ethical road to Indonesia to produce its stunning teak products, admired for their durability and aesthetic beauty. Its durability comes naturally from the mature teak tree, so it is ideal for tables as the wood can easily withstand heavy items as well as extreme weather conditions. This means it also only requires

110

low maintenance, and is easy to clean – with stains being treated simply with baking soda and warm water. Teak has a wonderful colour, texture and shape, and every piece is unique with its natural lines of wood. It is true that teak can be rather more expensive than other alternatives for outdoor furniture but – comparing the maintenance and cleaning costs – the price is well worth it. Teak root furniture is an exciting new addition to Tiara’s eye-catching range. The root of a teak tree is typically thrown away, but in this case artisans have preserved it to make a wonderful eco-friendly, statement piece for the living room. Both functional and dramatic, the Teak Root Coffee Table is sure to be a conversation piece. The tree was felled many, many years ago but instead of burning the roots before replanting, as was done previously, it is being used for the production of these unique items. www.tiarafurniture.com

WILD THEMES IN PARIS For the first Maison & Objet exhibition of the year, in Paris, the organisers chose the theme “Wild”. According to François Bernard, scenographer for the Inspirations Forum at the show, “The word ‘wild’ evokes the idea of savageness, derived from the Latin Sylvia (forest), which associates with the fascination with, and fear of, the unknown, the limits of our humanity. It suggests the sophistication of natural things and the energy of the untamed, both of which exert a powerful gravitational pull on our imaginations. “Wild is the ultimate otherness. It pulls us out of our comfort zone to challenge our place in the scheme of life. Faced with the indefinite horizons of the

112

Anthropocene, we are swept up in nostalgia for our relationship with nature, now broken. The plastic arts, gastronomy, lifestyle, cosmetics and, naturally, the decorative arts are all trying to capture this wildness and taking inspiration from it.” Bernard said the theme encompassed indistinct or raw shapes, as well as colours that ranged from yellow and green, to greenish-blue, khaki, earthy brown, rust, anthracite and burnt. “Textures are important, especially when they reflect the ‘trembling of time’. Streaked effects are also becoming a regular fixture with, for instance, the return of tapestries. Long strands of cotton or wool are taking the place of fur.” www.maison-objet.com

Reynaers Aluminium has equipped the Las Palmeras private house with Hi-Finity sliding doors. Designed by architect Valentín de Madariaga, Las Palmeras effortlessly combines traditional elements with a sleek, modern aspect. The streetside façade is as solid and intriguing as the Moorish homes of “Al-Andalus”, while the construction and geometry radiate a contemporary serenity and openness similar to the ambience of a 21st century monastery. “Some time ago,” explains Valentín de Madariaga, “an English client of mine at the time introduced me to feng shui, a Chinese art form which I try to apply to the Spanish landscape. For me, feng shui is about the relationship between the environment and sunlight, and the creation of peace and harmony.” The Las Palmeras resident is an avid contemporary art lover. The “backbone” of the residence, which threads together the structure and its various functions, is a long corridor that is used to display the owner’s personal art collection in varying formations. Indirect daylight illuminates the paintings along this corridor, which proceeds from the gymnasium to the dining and living areas, and then extends to the service areas and bedrooms of the parents and children. In total, the residence comprises 1,200 square metres. The various rooms are all oriented toward the covered terraces, which form a connection to the lawn. As Valentín notes, people in this area spend a great deal of their time outside, so the outdoor areas which flank the garden and the shaded galleries could be even more important than the functional interior spaces. A smooth transition from interior to exterior is created, with no less than 18 full glass Hi-Finity sliding doors providing a razor-thin separation between the two. The gymnasium’s sliding doors – which were specifically designed for this project, together with the Grupo Moncada installer – are particularly imposing. Viewed from the outside, the glass acts like mirrors reflecting the surroundings. Framed by the residence’s white profiles, the blurry image of the terraces and the vegetation almost creates a new modern painting: the latest asset in the owner’s collection. Creating Cool Spaces… and Protection from the Sun Interview with Tom Ward from The Shade Sail Company

Photos by: Mark Rood (www.iblueskyphotogaphy.com)

What made you decide to start up The Shade Sail Company? We moved to Spain in 2006, having lived in Australia for many years. We saw a need for unconventional shade systems like shade sails, here in Spain. I had some experience with shade sails in Australia, so we did some research and decided to set up The Shade Sail Company on the Costa del Sol, where the climate is virtually the same as in Perth in Australia. At the beginning we were having our sails made in Australia and importing them into Spain. For the

116

past six years we have manufactured them here in our workshop on the Costa del Sol, which means we can provide a faster and more reliable service. Tell us more about the services you offer… We have a full design, manufacture and installation package. The Shade Sail Company offers the optional service to maintain your shade sail and structure at the end of summer by dismantling the sails and all rigging. We then clean the sails, rigging and fittings before packing them away in a custom-made

bag and storing them over the winter period. We currently maintain over 200 sails for clients. What are the shade sails actually made of? Shade sails are made from polyethelene, which is a very tough type of plastic and is woven like material with polyester threads. We only use a commercial grade for our sails, unlike some of the DIY type sails that can be very flimsy. To further strengthen our sails we use seat-belt like webbing for the edges.

MARCH APRIL 6

First Person HL44.indd 116

26/02/16 17:22

Where can shade sails be installed? Shade sails can provide a cost-effective solution for large areas such as swimming pools, playgrounds, car parking areas and tennis courts where minimal support is required. Shade sails can be installed virtually anywhere in residential or commercial situations. In certain circumstances (i.e. community pools or large commercial projects) it may be necessary to obtain local government authority permission prior to installation of shade sail structures.

What are the benefits of having a shade sail? Not only are shade sails versatile and great to look at, but the materials we use have very high UV resistance of up to 97 per cent so there’s little chance of getting sunburn. Also, due to the nature of the material, it creates a cool space under the shade with any breeze able to come through. They can be stand-alone using posts so you can shade space away from your property, unlike awnings, and the materials come in many different colours.

What do you enjoy most about your job? As we work outdoors most of the time, the weather is a big plus for us. We’ve also met many new friends through our work, so I’d definitely say the weather and the people are high on the list, but most importantly the satisfaction we get in transforming a space for our clients and for them to be satisfied and pleased with our work. Global Brand Synonymous With Chic Luxury Interview with Cécile Peyrard, Roche Bobois Marbella Manager

Tell us something about the history of Roche Bobois… Roche Bobois was founded in Paris in 1961 by two sets of progressive young brothers with furniture in their blood. Today Roche Bobois is a leading international brand, synonymous the world over with European luxury and the French Art de Vivre. Roche Bobois has 250 showrooms worldwide (100 company-owned). When did Roche Bobois open in Marbella? Roche Bobois opened in Marbella in August 1983, more than 30 years ago.

118

How has Roche Bobois evolved since its Marbella inauguration? Roche Bobois now has three buildings extending over a total 1,200 square metres. At the beginning, we had one and over the years we expanded to the current three buildings, which allow us to present a significant part of our collection. In 2007, the Paris central office bought the franchise in Marbella and carried out a major renovation. Our aim is to have an attractive store, well presented with a large choice of furniture and accessories in both our collections, “Les Contemporains” and “Les Nouveaux Classiques”, to showcase the best of our products to customers.

What do you believe are the main reasons for Roche Bobois’s success? Roche Bobois has two new collections each year designed by some of the most talented established designers (Robert Tapinassi and Maurizio Manzoni, Christophe Delcourt, Ora Ito, René Bouchara, Hans Hopfer, Sacha Lakic, Stephen Burks, Cédrid Ragot, Mauro Lipparini). We have a constantly evolving portfolio of products which ensures that both our collections are relevant, on-trend and highly desirable. Roche Bobois works in exclusive partnerships with specialist semi-artisanal workshops in France, Italy and Portugal to manufacture goods of exceptional quality. A high level of customisation (includ-

ing an extensive choice of materials, dimensions and finishes) is offered to designers and clients. Roche Bobois has its own significant style… how would you describe this style? The strength of Roche Bobois comes from its exclusivity and unique products, collaborations with talented designers and European manufacture. Roche Bobois is not selling furniture; it is selling a concept including all the decoration. French Art de Vivre… a dream. What are the main trends for this season? For the spring-summer collection we have taken

materials – marble, wood and leather – in their raw form and have tried to understand them better. The lines and form are fluid, harmonious and light, while remaining functional. The finishes are inspired by haute couture fashion, with specialist stitching techniques and button quilting. What key services do you offer? We offer customers a 3D design service. We prepare a plan of their house, recommending furniture and all the decoration: wallpaper, curtains, carpets, lamps and accessories. We have our own delivery service, and we install everything in our clients’ homes.

What do you enjoy most about your work? I launched Roche Bobois in 1989, and I stayed a few years in Paris in the export department. I love this brand and I know it very well. For me, Roche Bobois is a passion. It is fantastic to discover new collections and designs. It is always extremely interesting to create all the decoration for our customers’ homes. Roche Bobois C.C. Featuring a completely remodelled design, the newlyopened Barceló Emperatriz reinterprets the palace aesthetics of 19th century Madrid in the centre of one of the city’s most elegant neighbourhoods. The hotel was inspired by the life of Eugenia de Montijo, Spain’s last empress, and created to emulate her cosmopolitan, intellectual and visionary life. Located in the centre of the Salamanca neighbourhood, next to Paseo de la Castellana and Calle Serrano, the hotel is ideal for both business and leisure trips, and is an excellent starting point for discovering this sophisticated neighbourhood, home to some of the city’s top restaurants and most prestigious boutiques. The Barceló Emperatriz‘s B-Room concept is highlighted by completely fitted and decorated avant-garde furniture that contrasts with such classic details as Capitone armchairs, while guests also have access to cutting-edge technology including a connectivity panel, the Mini Media Hub, which connects the room’s TV with a mobile, tablet or laptop via USB connection or Bluetooth. The Mutis restaurant is decorated with floral motifs to reflect the empress’s love of nature, and offers a select menu that includes haute cuisine as well as daily Barceló Healthy Gourmet dishes that “combine the pleasure of fine dining with healthy eating”. It has been described as “the most luxurious road trip on earth”, a once-in-a-lifetime holiday experience for motoring enthusiasts. A joint project between Land Rover and travel partner Abercrombie & Kent, the trip takes in five continents, eight countries and nine luxury hotels. The itinerary has been developed to mark the launch of the Range Rover SVAutobiography, the latest variant of the British manufacturer’s luxury model line, featuring “unique exterior design enhancements, an exquisitely detailed interior and the most powerful engine ever offered in a Range Rover”. According to Mark Cameron, Land Rover experiential marketing director at Jaguar Land Rover, “From Europe to Australia, this trip is all about the epitome of luxury but done so in a Land Rover way – the unexpected, the off-the-beaten-

In preparing for our eagerly awaited day at the Beach House restaurant in Marbella we learned that during the summer season they open every morning for breakfast at 8.30 am and serve drinks in the lounge area until 1 am. It was going to be a long day, and night! As it was still winter (with shorter opening hours) we arrived around 11 am, to be greeted by a well-turned out and highly efficient member of the beach staff, and were shown to a beautiful luxury bed with superthick mattress, pillows and parasols. There was great attention to detail, including hand-made hardwood tables. Luxury and comfort personified… Asked if we would like a champagne breakfast, we enthusiastically concurred and asked for it to be brought to the bed. It was served almost in hotel fashion on large bamboo trays – creating a whole new dimension to “breakfast in bed”. The food was delicious with excellent quality ingredients. We relaxed, read, went for a stroll and dipped our toes into the water. It must be one of the best stretches of sand on the Costa del Sol – even during this time of the year, pristine with not a stone in sight. Just a pity the water was still a little too cold for a swim, for the less hardy. No matter, we spent the early afternoon relaxing some more, listening to stylish live music being played in the main restaurant by Felix, relaxed covers with a Caribbean feel. Propped up in the chiringuito (beach lounge) in big comfy sofas, a chilled-out, rustic area with a Polynesian ambience, in contrast to the main dining area in the restaurant. We enjoyed a light snack from the beach and bar menu: Brunotti Superfood salad and mixed sushi – healthy, refreshing and extremely tasty. After a brief siesta, we met some friends in the bar and took a late table reservation in the restaurant for dinner. Incredible how by night you could be in an entirely different establishment: romantic, formal and minimalist with attractive lighting. Another superb singer, La Negra Mayte, was entertaining us; again not intrusive at all, with sophisticated covers. As we had already eaten breakfast and lunch we suggested savouring some tapas as a starter for all to share. The waitress liaised with the kitchen team, who put together a wonderful array of dishes including gambas pil pil (spicy prawns), croquettes, squid and pata negra ham. We were unaware that the Beach House offered traditional chiringuito fare such as this – simply exceptional. For the mains we opted for their more typical modern European-style dishes, including wild turbot with king prawns. Oh yes, did we mention the sunset was incredible? And the superb wine list – clearly one of their passions. Urb. Coto de los Dolores, Elviria, Marbella Tel. T-Bone Grill A Divinely Diverse Dining Experience

The name of this elegant restaurant in Marbella could be somewhat misconstrued. It is true that the establishment – located in Gran Meliá Don Pepe Hotel on the Golden Mile – offers diners a succulent T-Bone steak. However, in addition to Basquestyle grilled meats, the T-Bone Grill menu also includes a wide and varied range of starters, salads, vegetables, kebabs and desserts. The “star” dishes are grilled beef chop, steak tartar with Belon oysters and cod in breadcrumbs – while the highlight is roasted meat cooked using the Gorrotxategi family’s renowned techniques. Matías Gorrotxategi, who trained in haute cuisine with top chefs of the calibre of Juan Mari Arzak and Didier Oudill, is widely considered to be the best “parrillero” (grill chef) in Spain, and his son Iñaki is at the helm of the T-Bone Grill in Marbella. Earlier this year, Home & Lifestyle Magazine was invited to an exclusive press luncheon which showcased the restaurant’s diversity. So much so that some of those present were disappointed not to be served a T-bone steak! But only for a while… Any disappointment was soon quelled when the dishes (and carefully selected local wines) started to flow out from the kitchen in the hands of highly professional and amicable staff: grilled oysters, pickled winter vegetables, verdina beans in a green sauce with clams, veal shank and Darcis desserts and chocolates. WINE NOTES

The Best of Toro… for Mature Tastes By AJ Linn

Any wine aficionado arriving in the Toro region a couple of decades ago could probably have exchanged their car for a large vineyard. Marbella pioneer the Marqués de Salamanca did so some time earlier, when an old lorry got him what was then a vineyard-covered hillside in front of where the Marbella Club now stands. The peasants in both areas were literally scratching a living, and making wine was mere subsistence farming. Indeed back in those days many houses had a large flask propped up by the entrance, signifying wine was sold there. Bulk wine of course: no-one had got around to bottling it then, and the only customers were local people who thought no more of buying a five-litre garrafa of wine than buying a loaf of bread. Vineyards in the Toro region now sell for the same price as the best in Ribera del Duero – if you can find any for sale. The area sits on the banks of the Duero river, between Rueda (the white wine-growing denomination) and Los Arribes, and is about 40 kilometres from the Portuguese border. The climate is harsh, even more brutal than the boil-in-summer-freeze-in-winter temperatures of the Duero, and because of the intensely cold winter months the grapes apparently grow a thicker skin than in other areas, giving a deep red colour and high tannin levels to the wine. Indeed, this is what characterises Toro wines – strength and staying power. The main grape is Tinta de Toro, a local form of Tempranillo, and Malvasia white is also permitted, while Cabernet Sauvignon is not. Wines currently made in the region are down from the previous 16º alcohol to 14º or 15º. This is not a wine for careless quaffing. You need to plan the occasion, lay on substantial food, and make sure you have nothing to do later that afternoon. You also need to open the bottle well in advance, and many of the better Toro wines actually taste better the day following, so great is their desire to take in air slowly and develop gradually after opening. Before Toro became an officially-recognised wine region (DO) in 1987, much of the product went to Ribera del Duero to be blended but, when winemakers from other areas such as Alejandro Fernández of Tinto Pesquera and Eguren of Rioja moved in at the beginning of the decade, other big names from Rueda, Navarra, Rioja and Ribera bought vineyards in Toro. There are now some 60

130

established bodegas in the zone, and the dirt-poor peasant who did not sell his vineyard to one of the incomers now sells the grapes he grows to the wineries at several times the price he got previously. The Eguren family sold their Numanthia Termes bodega to French luxury goods group LVMC in 2008, joining a portfolio that includes Chateau d’Yquem, Krug, Dom Pérignon and Moët & Chandon. There is considerable discussion as to whether the incomers paid too much for their vineyards, and whether the investment has been justified. Toro wines are now world-famous, and command, in the main, high prices. There will always be people who prefer Toro over other regions, but it is not a wine for all tastes due to its intensity and strength. One distinct advantage though is that you can safely lay it down for the next 10 to 15 years and it will only get better. AN AUSTRIAN CONNECTION The latest arrivals have usually been individual investors looking for small vineyards where they can make excellent wine in limited quantities. One of these, Martin Maria Krachler, comes from the wine-growing region south of Vienna, and his forebears have always been vintners. Martin María is an agricultural economist and wine technologist who has worked internationally, and he and his Spanish wife, Cristina, started some years ago to search for a region in Spain that could fulfil their ambitions of making an unusually high-quality wine. Finally they homed in on the small Valmartin winery in Argujillo, which had the right soil, a favourable micro climate, high altitude that ensured slow maturing and higher acidic content, and old vines with low production of between 1,300 and 2,500 kilograms/hectare. They also got an old subterranean bodega built into the rock. The couple’s first vintage was the 2012. There are two fine wines, perfect examples of the very best of the Toro region, and very well priced. The Tinto Roble 2013 costs €7.50, and the Crianza 2012 €9.50, ex-bodega. Both are made with 100 per cent Tinta de Toro. www.bodegasvalmartin.com

The Potential Health Benefits

of Walnuts

Medical Minutes by John Schieszer

Adding a handful of walnuts to your diet on a regular basis may help improve your cholesterol levels, according to American researchers. Investigators at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine are now reporting weight loss programs that provide healthy fats, such as olive oil in the Mediterranean diet, or a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet have similar impacts on pound-shedding. However, adding walnuts, which are high in polyunsaturated fats, may have a significant impact on cholesterol levels. Overweight and obese adult women were enrolled in a one-year behavioural weight loss program and randomly assigned to one of three diets consisting of: low-fat and high-carbohydrate; lowcarbohydrate and high-fat; or a walnut-rich, high-fat and low-carbohydrate diet. The findings showed that all three dietary plans promoted similar weight loss. Women lost the most weight with a low-fat diet, but that strategy did not result in the most benefit for lipid levels. The walnut-rich diet had the most impact on cholesterol levels by decreasing low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or so-called bad cholesterol, and increasing beneficial high-density lipoprotein (HDL). The high-fat, low-carb group, which consumed monounsaturated fats, did not experience the same beneficial effects as the walnut-rich diet, which featured polyunsaturated fatty acids. At six months, the average weight loss was almost eight per cent among all groups. “This weight loss may not put these women at their ideal weight, but it made a significant reduction in their risk of cardiovascular and other diseases,” said principal investigator Cheryl Rock, PhD, from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.

Combating Migraines in a New Way

American researchers have discovered a new avenue for combating migraine headaches. They have identified a marker in the blood for episodic migraine, which is defined as having less than 15 headaches per month. Researchers in Baltimore (Maryland) conducted a study with 52 women with episodic migraine and 36 women who did not have any headaches. All the women underwent a neurologic exam and had their body mass index (BMI) measured and gave blood samples. Women with migraine had an average of 5.6 headache days per month. The blood samples were tested for a group of lipids that participate in energy homeostasis and regulate inflammation in the brain. The investigators found that the total levels of the lipids called ceramides were decreased in women with episodic migraine as compared to those women without any headache disorders. Women with migraines had approximately 6,000 nanograms per millilitre of total ceramides in their blood, compared to women without headaches who had about 10,500 nanograms per millilitre. Every standard deviation increase in total ceramide levels was associated with over a 92 per cent lower risk of having a migraine. “While more research is needed to confirm these initial findings, the possibility of discovering a new biomarker for migraine is exciting,” said study investigator B. Lee Peterlin, who is with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.

Take a Walk Through the Park Why Living Near Natural Areas Can Be Good For Your Health

By Rachel Garrod

It is intuitive that living near green spaces or having access to parks and forests should make us feel better, and there is much research to suggest that positive benefits are physical as well as mental. Studies show that people who live near green spaces have lower levels of cortisol (a stress hormone) compared with those living in mainly urban areas. There seem to be positive benefits for cardiovascular health and even a lower risk of death after a stroke if living near green areas. Although having better access to green areas is conducive to increased physical activity such as cycling and walking, it appears that the benefits of being near green spaces are to some extent independent of the amount of physical activity undertaken. A new study has raised the intriguing concept of “brain fatigue” as a potential explanation for these benefits. Until recently researchers were only able to measure brainwave activity in the lab. However, researchers from Edinburgh came up with the idea of using a novel portable machine that measures brainwaves during activity. Wearing unobtrusive electrodes hidden beneath an ordinary cap, the participants were asked to walk a route that consisted of three distinct areas. The walkers passed through an older historic shopping district in Edinburgh with

136

only light traffic, they then walked through a park area and they finally ended the half hour walk by strolling through a busy commercial district with large volumes of traffic and plenty of concrete buildings. The measurements taken during the walk allowed the researchers to determine that when walking through the park area the brainwave patterns showed a more “contemplative” mood compared with the higher “arousal” and “frustration” associated with the urban areas. This change in brainwave pattern may be the link between reduced stress and the presence of green areas, with the brain “regenerating” itself during the walk in the park. If that all sounds a bit too “Dr Who”, well don’t worry: just take a stroll through one of the many stunning park areas here in Marbella and meditate on what a joy it is to live within an area of such natural beauty. ART & CULTURE

Debut Solo Exhibition by David Hulston

Born in 1952, David Hulston began drawing and painting as a child. His family were too poor to buy drawing books so his early artistic efforts were on the reverse side of wallpaper. He also recalls a new pencil being as rare a treat as the tin bath on Sundays! At 11 years of age, David began practising judo, a martial art in which he excelled – achieving a
2nd Dan nine years later. However, this promising career was ended by “an over-relaxed attitude to a machine tool which unhappily devoured his right index finger”. After a period working in Dammam (Saudi Arabia) on Cosworth engines and cryogenic and vacuum technology, David moved to Spain in 1997 and began to paint seriously.
His first solo exhibition – held in February at the Gallery Art Club, located in the offices of the Swedish magazine Svenska Magasinet – was the result of those efforts. The artist is single with one adult son (Morgan) and lives in Los Pacos, Fuengirola. www.svenskamagasinet.nu / www.galleryartclub.com

Historical Golf Moments on Show at Olympic Museum

With golf returning to the Olympic Games in Brazil this year after a 112-year absence, golf enthusiasts have been able to enjoy a fascinating pictorial trip down memory lane. The “Swing!” exhibition at the Olympic Museum gallery in Lausanne in January was held in conjunction with the International Golf Federation. Golf was played in the 1900 and 1904 Olympics but only 22 US golfers competed in the inaugural event in Paris, and the next Games were limited to Canadian and US men (77 in total). This year, the event will feature a wide

cross-section of countries, with the world’s top players qualifying through their respective men’s and women’s world rankings. The IGF was founded in 1958 “to encourage the international development of the game and to employ golf as a vehicle to foster friendship and sportsmanship”. It is recognised by the International Olympic Committee as the official international federation for golf, and comprises 133 federations from 127 countries. CONTEMPORARY MEDITERRANEAN Look for Timber Structures

The Cape Reed group of companies has introduced a new white wash finish to its timber constructions. According to the company, “Historically, these timber constructions were painted with a dark brown or black varnish which creates a rather rustic look. However, questions were asked about whether a Cape Reed structure could also fit into a modern contemporary theme.” This inspired the designers at Cape Reed to develop a white wash paint application for these timber structures that provides a modern contemporary

look to outdoor entertainment structures (such as chiringuitos and pergolas) and which also resembles a typical Mediterranean look. An excellent example of this can be found at the Sea Grill restaurant (Hotel Puente Romano, Marbella), where the thatch roofs in combination with the clean white wash timbers create an idyllic scene. This “new look” also comes with Cape Reed’s customary 15-year product guarantee. Tel. (+34) 951 775 495 / 638 421 464 / www.capereed.com

European Tour Action Returns to the “Costa del Golf” Over the past four decades the Costa del Sol has been a major focal point of golf on the European continent. No other area has such a high concentration of golf courses and the Coast’s leading clubs have welcomed a veritable who’s who of global stars competing in major European Tour events and other international tournaments. However, then the crisis hit, tournament sponsors became wary, the Junta de Andalucía (regional government) re-focused its promotional activities away from directly organising golf tournaments… and the annual calendar became threadbare. Actually empty. The last European Tour event held on the Costa del Sol was the NH Collection Open at La Reserva de Sotogrande in April 2014, a relatively minor tournament (in spite of the host club’s pedigree) co-sanctioned with the European Challenge Tour. Now there has finally been some good news to cheer up the local golf industry and fans. Valderrama – Spain’s most famous golf course – will be hosting the Open de España from 14 to 17 April. The Open de España is one of the Tour’s most venerable championships, dating to 1912, and this year’s €2 million edition will have a celebrated new co-host, the Sergio Garcia Foundation.

By focusing on the shadow to devise light as sparks of colour, Warhol returns to the quintessential problem of art: perception. I always want the space to reappear, to make a comeback, because it’s lost space when there’s something in it.’” www.guggenheim-bilbao.org

SPECIALIST ADVICE

Mortgages in Spain The Minimum Interest Rate Charged Article supplied by Arcos & Lamers

Here we briefly and simply explain the main issues concerning the minimum interest rate charge on a mortgage in Spain – the so-called “cláusula suelo”. Related to the mortgage loan and the property purchase by mortgage, this contractual clause stipulates a minimum amount payable to the bank, even though the ordinary interest rate that has been agreed with the financial institution is now lower or is decreasing. This clause only benefits the bank. The lower the interest rate, the less a client should have to pay, but in establishing this clause the banks ensure a minimum charge. In other words, it does not allow the debtor to benefit from a fall in the index. It is also possible that the bank includes a “cláusula techo” (roof clause), which limits the maximum interest rate a debtor would have to pay the bank if the index rose considerably. However, banks tend to set this above the usual market value, so this “roof clause” does not become effective – and is in fact exorbitant. Although the application of these clauses may be in accordance with the law, in most cases they are unfair due to lack of transparency, or not reporting their presence and their consequences. The “cláusula suelo” applies to mortgages of variable interest rate (in Spain the Euribor is often used as a reference), which represent most of the mortgage loans made in Spain.

To find out if your mortgage in Spain contains the “cláusula suelo”, you should check the mortgage loan deed and determine if any of the following expressions appear in it: • “límite mínimo del tipo de interés del (…) %” • “límites a la variedad del tipo de interés” • “tipo de interés remunerado aplicable” • “tipo aplicable de interés ordinario” • “tipo de interés nominal” • “en ningún caso el tipo nominal anual podrá ser inferior al (…) %” Our company carries out a preliminary study of your Spanish mortgage and, if your legal case is highly feasible, we can help you remove any “cláusula suelo” from your Spanish mortgage loan, enabling you to benefit from a lower interest rate and receive a refund of amounts over-charged.
