FROM THE

Former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser once infamously declared that, “Life wasn’t meant to be easy.” Coming from the scion of a wealthy pastoral family with a privileged upbringing, his words were destined to haunt him until his death, although many forgave him when in his latter years he became an unexpected advocate for a broad spectrum of international relief, humanitarian and human rights issues. Anyway, this thought came to mind towards the end of June when – enjoying dinner with a group of friends – we all rued the fact we would have to work through July and August and not be able to take any summer holidays. The grumbling only lasted as long as it took to take another sip of Ribera, dip a piece of bread into the gambas pil pil, plunge a fork into a bowl of vibrant Mediterranean salad, and drool over the simmering chateaubriand at the next table. Yes, maybe it isn’t easy working while others around you are frolicking on the beach all morning, lunching on the terrace of a seaside chiringuito and enjoying an afternoon siesta before heading out to play all night. But, as we all had to agree, there are still plenty of opportunities – when the workplace door closes for the day – to share these wonderful summer experiences with friends and families. And even more so when indulging in the pleasures of entertaining at home. Of course, in the latter case, that means making sure our home, and especially the outdoor area (be it a sprawling garden or spacious terrace), is properly set up for chilling out with friends, enjoying family leisure activities and savouring an al fresco feast under the stars. To that end, this issue we offer continuing insight into the latest products and services available from the Coast’s premier showrooms, design studios and home décor companies, to ensure your outdoor space is comfortable, functional and aesthetically pleasing. Finally, by now readers will no doubt have already had enough Brexit punditry, so we won’t add to your discomfort, other than to say that amidst all the uncertainty among the foreign community in southern Spain one important facet is unchanged and will surely help us offset the referendum ramifications: the Costa del Sol remains one of the world’s most attractive holiday and residential-tourism resorts, with an incomparable combination of climate, infrastructure, transport connections, lifestyle and cultural charm.

Embrace The Space

Outdoors For an outdoor space to have purpose and functionality several factors need to be taken into consideration. In the first place, the space must be in harmony with its surroundings; and second, provide a combination of style, protection and comfort. To that end, the right choice of furniture is paramount, pieces that enhance the scope, ambience and requirements of the space, while ensuring the overall outdoor setting is cohesively linked with the adjourning indoor areas. Above Harlequin’s Amazilia collection of fabrics and wallcoverings is based on extravagant tropical motifs in glorious colourways. The prints depict hummingbirds, botanically-drawn butterflies, feathers, glossy large leaves and etched elephants. They are completed by ikat embroideries, trellis-style weaves and a stunning, mosaic-like tapestry weave depicting tessellated tulips (www.harlequin.uk.com). Nature & Life

Earth-Friendly Materials for the Home

Photos: The Green School in Bali

Earth Day was celebrated this spring, which surely should mean every day but sadly we abuse and ruin Mother Earth throughout the year. However, there are ways in which we can look after our wonderful planet, and this month I am writing about natural materials for homes. We are blessed with a plethora of materials to build our homes. It doesn’t have to be concrete and cement. More and more people are turning to using materials which are natural and just as efficient, or even more so, than the concrete jungle one is used to seeing. Featured here are some examples of what can be found in the world today and a few samples of how they are used. You can also see that where the materials are found bears a huge relation to what has been used. Kicking off is ADOBE, used for centuries in South America and then North America, dating back to the Aztecs, who were master builders. It was used throughout the Americas in so many countries. COB has also been around for a very long time. Like adobe, it is a mixture of various compounds. Here the main ones are subsoil, water and some kind of organic mate-

rial, typically straw and sometimes lime. It is mainly used in the more northern countries, and the result is extremely attractive especially combined with a living roof. Using the grass as a protection is a natural fusion of both. Rammed earth is just what the name implies, and it is at least as old as The Great Wall of China. Basically it is very compressed earth of clay and sand and can create flat surfaces for walls of up to one foot (one-third of a metre) in thickness, emanating tranquillity inside. The effects of rammed earth form their own design quite easily. I have looked at many rammed earth homes and the interiors are beautiful. Earthbags are literally bags filled with earth and covered with some sort of plaster, but the technology has advanced enormously. Cal-Earth Institute’s renowned Nader Khalili has been experimenting with earthbags, creating domes, vaults and arches. As he was familiar with Middle Eastern architecture it was natural for him to envisage building this way. The institute has been training people with his techniques and the whole field has expanded exponentially with experiments from his students.

Bamboo is earth’s wonder grass. I dedicated a whole article on the fabulous Green School in Bali (Indonesia) in last year’s March-April issue. Using this fastgrowing, immensely strong, fungus-proof, insect-proof grass for building is surely one of the best ways there is. Nothing beats it in its versatility. I love the grass: it is pliable and can be twisted, it is easy to grow anywhere, with good drainage and plenty of sun it is perfect – and you can eat it too. Stone is undeniably one of the earth’s most natural materials. Going back to the beginning of human history, stone has been used just about everywhere you look. Varying from the very simple to the imposing and majestic (think Taj Mahal), it is all over the earth and can be utilised for our benefit. So you can see that our wonderful planet gives us the means to utilise all the natural products available, and there are many I have not mentioned. All we have to do is combine them with today’s technology to have a sustainable, ecofriendly functioning building. And that, surely, is the best of all.

Casa Décor 2016 Casa Décor is a relatively small but exclusive design exhibition where the participants take over an emblematic building in the centre of Madrid or Barcelona and display unique interior design installations throughout the house – with fabulous designs for living rooms, hallways, outdoor terraces, bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens. Home & Lifestyle Magazine was kindly invited by Villeroy & Boch to visit Casa Décor in Madrid where, on the first day of the exhibition, Villeroy & Boch’s director, David Millón, took an eager crowd of interior design enthusiasts and press members on a grand tour around the home, showing all of the installations Villeroy & Boch had created. The exhibition was launched on 19 May and ran for over one month until 26 June. For more information about this annual exhibition go to www.casadecor.es

The key philosophy behind UDesign’s concept of good design is that it should reflect the needs, passion and lifestyle of the owner. To that end, and consolidating their commitment to providing non-compromising bespoke interiors, UDesign have now added an architectural studio to complete their unique approach to “in-house” design. UDesign are a collection of talented architects, 3D visual artists and interior designers, specialising in luxury high-end residential projects. Together with their in-house team of skilled and experienced craftsmen, they design and create homes that are not only aesthetically stylish and contemporary on the outside, but also ooze sophistication and quality on the inside. This combination of both the creative and the technical defines them as one of the leading architect studios for innovative contemporary homes. Their design process begins from the inside out, focusing firstly on the interior spaces and their purpose to establish the best possible living environment, while carefully considering exterior views, interior focal points, light and functionality. They endeavour to create the feeling of an indoor-outdoor living experience, where the terrace is a natural extension of the lounge. They achieve this by cleverly constructed walls that totally conceal all the sliding doors and windows which would otherwise be seen as a dividing obstacle between the interior and exterior living spaces. Their in-house virtual 3D artists work together with the design team to provide clients with a “glimpse into the future” so that they can visualise their home before it is even built. Furniture, fabrics, colours, materials and lighting are all selected and then incorporated into the design, including panoramic views from the actual property, so that every detail is brought to life as if it were real. This gives clients the luxury and peace of mind of knowing that their future home looks every bit as impressive on the inside as it does on the outside. ARK’s commitment to excellence and cutting-edge design is highlighted in this exceptional property. The house is located on a sloping plot with a stunning landscape overlooking the Mediterranean Sea in the distant horizon. This clear and natural orientation – with all living areas lined up, and the suite of volumes and plans intersecting – determines the overall design concept. Excellently merged within a spectacular garden, the villa comprises almost 2,500 square metres of constructed area distributed over three floors. The building has seven bedroom suites for family and guests, separated by patios, gardens and stone terraces. All the spaces have large windows that enable the house to be completely opened to the outside, enhancing the Andalucian sunlight and ensuring there are no barriers to the landscape. The magnificent porch is transformed into a chillout area with stunning views towards an amazing green infinity pool and the sea. The basement has 11 park spaces, a cinema, a winery, a gym and a large spa area where you can forget the outside world. The indoor pool rising from the floor combines the relaxing sound of a waterfall with chromotherapy lights. Finally, the expansive garden enveloping the house mixes Mediterranean native species with a Japanese Zen spirit… a balance of tradition and serenity blended into nature to create the ideal home environment. PROPERTY NEWS

The Advantages and Pitfalls of

Buying a New-Build Property Advice provided by Real Capital Solutions

American equity fund Real Capital Solutions has successfully acquired and sold in excess of $1.2 billion of assets in the USA, plus achieving over €55 million of sales in Spain since 2013. The Denver-based firm dedicates a significant proportion of company activity to home building, and now it looks to launch three new-build developments across the Costa del Sol. A company with this much experience in property development is sure to be aware of the advantages – and pitfalls – of a new-build purchase, so we asked for some sound advice… “There are many advantages to buying a property before it has actually been built,” says Taylor Cox, partner of Real Capital Solutions Spain. This is indeed specifically true in Marbella where many of the vast construction projects were halted following the 2007 downturn. Contemporary design is now in high demand as the market moves in a positive direction. New-build investments (or “off-plan”, as it is sometimes referred) often provide the opportunity to secure a luxury home at a lower price, with the subsequent months of construction allowing time for prices to rise and profits to be made. “Getting in early also means that there may be room to personalise finishes. For example, before the property has actually been built, you may be able to upgrade lighting systems or integrate on-trend elements such as fireplaces or bodegas – these options are generally more expensive to install once construction has completed.”

110

Real Capital Solutions is a company focussed on integrity, from start to finish. Professionalism and transparency is a core ethos that runs throughout the approximately 120 staff based across the US and Spain. And they seek these traits in all parties involved in the property process: banks, lawyers, contractors and vendors. “If you are considering a new-build purchase, be sure that you are buying from a reputable company with a clear track-record of real estate development. Don’t be embarrassed to ask to see examples of their previous work,” says Taylor. Your legal representative will start by checking the basic sales requirements relevant to any new-build Spanish property development (in Spain this includes the building specifications, building licenses, bank guarantees, utility certificates/ installations, etc). Marbella has remained attractive to buyers since its emergence as a luxury destination in the 1970s, but it is a unique market with an inherently cyclical nature. American firms, such as Real Capital Solutions, understand this fluctuating behaviour as it has some affinity with the sunshine states of America where plentiful sunshine, hospitality and accessibility ultimately win out. Taylor summarises by saying “The key to profit, as with everything, is strategic timing. And Marbella is currently a prime location for new, innovative and modern property developments.” For more information on Real Capital Solutions’ current portfolio of property developments, visit www.RCSspain.com

Offering Quality German Carpentry for Kitchens, Furniture and Flooring Interview with Hartmut Reichert and Aneta Kijek from Reichert Wood

Photo: David Toms

Tell us a bit about yourselves and how you came to live in Spain… We came to Spain to gain new experiences. I (Hartmut) worked as a carpenter in Germany and planned to spend half my time in Spain and the other half in Germany but of course, like many people who come to visit Marbella, I never went back! How long have you been operating on the Costa del Sol and what services do you offer? We have been established in Spain for around 15

112

years. We are a small team offering an all-round and personal service. We design (using 3D design software) and plan kitchens working with highquality German brands such as Nolte, for example. We also design, manufacture and install bespoke wardrobes as well as offer construction services, tiling and wooden floors. We have carried out a number of shop fittings; for example, several of the prestigious boutiques on the frontline in the Puerto Banús marina, and in Madrid, Lisbon and Barcelona.

What do you class as the perfect kitchen? A kitchen should last around 20 years. Your kitchen should not only look aesthetically beautiful but also be durable and practical with good drawer systems. A well-planned kitchen made to precise measurements will offer long-lasting results. Avoid handmade kitchens as they will never be able to achieve the precision that a machine can offer. There are now handle-less drawers, automatic door systems, LED-lit cabinets and camouflaged appliances which are all interesting new design features that you can

have for your kitchen to make it very desirable aesthetically and on a practical level. How does Reichert Wood stand out from its competitors? There are many companies on the Coast offering our products but we believe we have an edge in terms of offering a personal service due to being a small company. We are trained carpenters with experience that spans over many decades. Our work is our passion and we work around the clock to ensure all of the de-

tails are covered-off properly. We have been in this business a long time so we know what to look out for. Our turn-around is very fast as we have worked with our trusted collaborators for many years. In our opinion, they are the best in what they do and we know that they always aim to never let us down. In conclusion… As a couple, we work together like a family – offering a family service. We work closely with customers on the kitchen details and plans and – if necessary –

we can complete the work rapidly, even through the night. Customers know they can trust us, and they are satisfied and reassured when they see how much we take care of all the details, fully confident about our competence and professional ability. A new book by landscape architect Ashley Penn showcases rooftop gardens and terraces around the world, from lavish flower cascades to minimalist design. Published by teNeues, “Living Roofs” features open-air sanctuaries in a diverse range of styles, including verdant settings where people have grown their own vegetables or used grass and shrubs to frame an opulent lounge area or pool – in highrise penthouses or as retrofit solutions to sustainable homes. “They all convey the unique feeling of living between heaven and earth,” notes the publisher. “Peace and relaxation are the focus in these slices of paradise, places where you can quite literally sit back and watch the world go by.” Ashley Penn is a chartered member of the Landscape Institute in the United Kingdom and has written extensively for the Landscape Architects Network website. He currently resides in Nokia (Finland), where he works as a freelance landscape designer. www.teneues.com

DS Automobiles has followed up its launch earlier this year of the new DS 3 with an intriguing design collaboration involving haute couture, perfumes and cosmetics brand Givenchy. The Le MakeUp Limited Edition was created to “redefine French luxury and elegance in automotive design”, according to DS Automobiles (which is a separate manufacturing division within Citroën). The DS 3 Givenchy Le MakeUp is available as a hatchback and a Cabrio, either with a manual gearbox or the latest EAT6 automatic transmission, and all versions are powered by the DS brand’s PureTech 110 S&S three-cylinder petrol engine. It has been designed to appeal to “customers looking for the ultimate in personal expression”. To that end, only 500 examples will be available in the UK. “Just over half of all DS 3 drivers are women, so this limited edition has been designed to meet the expectations of many modern-day women, who are always on the go.“

A bespoke Givenchy Le MakeUp kit is stored in a special compartment in the driver’s armrest, and the spacious interior “provides the perfect place where both the driver and the front passenger can apply and check their make-up before driving”. Enhanced by experiential technology, both courtesy mirrors feature special LED lighting developed exclusively for the model to ensure the best possible illumination, day and night. The styling of the car includes a textured white body colour called Opaline White, making a striking contrast with the DS signature Whisper Purple colour of the roof, door mirrors and wheel centre caps. The exterior look is completed with Givenchy Le MakeUp badges positioned on the doors, just in front of the “shark fin” B-pillars, and the luxurious interior features a Rose Pink dashboard and premium black leather upholstery. The cosmetics kit coming with the car includes Noir Couture mascara, Prisme Visage compact face powder and Le Rouge lipstick, as well as a Whisper Purple nail polish developed specifically for the partnership.

01/07/16 02:16

The Costa del Sol’s hinterland is home to a exceptional array of mountain havens that are ideal for a reinvigorating weekend getaway or a longer family holiday. Conveniently located for those travelling from the main coastal urban areas, they offer a wonderful mix of relaxation, cuisine, leisure and stunning views. Some also provide an intriguing insight into the area’s rich history – like Castillo de Monda, for example. An intimate boutique hotel, Monda Castle is built on the foundations of “Al-Mundat”, an Arab fortress from the ninth century. One of the original towers and parts of the foundations are still visible, and its hillside setting provides breathtaking views in all directions, overlooking the picturesque white village of Monda below and across the mountain range to Málaga and the Mediterranean. The site of the town was originally occupied by an Ibero-Roman fortified enclosure established by the Romans in the third to first centuries BC. Some historical accounts report the presence of a Phoenician settlement before the arrival of the Romans, who built a cobbled road (parts of which remain today) linking the coast near San Pedro, through Istán, Monda, Cártama and on to Málaga. There is strong evidence that the famous “Battle of Munda” – where Julius Caesar led his troops against the Roman republican forces in 45 BC – was held in the hills and on the plains of current-day Monda. The original construction of today’s castle is thought to date from the eighth century. It fell into disrepair towards the end of the ninth century and Christian leader Omar Ibn Hafsun rebuilt it and named it Al Mundat. In 990 it was destroyed by Abbas Ibn Almundir before being rebuilt in the 11th century by the Hammudíes and becoming a key garrison over several centuries. In spring 1485, invading Christians under the command of Captain Hurtado de Mendoza y Luna took control, and the fortress remained mostly intact until 1570 when, after an abortive Arab uprising, it was almost completely demolished. Hurtado became the first mayor of Monda. In 1570, Arevalo de Zuago arrived with 80 settlers to ransack the castle and slaughter the Moriscos (Moors converted to Christianity) living there. The settlers established their town at the foot of the castle hill, where Monda village is today, and the church is built on the site of the old mosque. The castle remained a ruin for 400 years until, in the mid-1970s, a German aristocrat bought what little was left and began an ambitious re-building project. Eventually the castle ruins were sold to a group of English entrepreneurs, who completed the work and opened the place as a luxury hotel. It was sold on to an American consortium with the aim of making it a timeshare resort, and it was also briefly a private club before being taken over by a consortium of Dutch entrepreneurs and hospitality professionals. The castle was re-opened in March after a major revamp, and now offers a range of modern-equipped accommodation – from comfortable double rooms to spacious family rooms or suites – as well as the fine dining Albacar restaurant, a swimming pool, a tropical roof garden, a patio for sublime chilling-out and the Sopure wellbeing centre with its spa amenities and wide range of treatments for body, mind and soul. The castle’s spectacular location and historic nature also make it an excellent location for company incentive trips, product launches, photo shoots, weddings, and other special events. EL ORIGEN NEW MARBELLA RESTAURANT FOR MEAT LOVERS Photos by: Johnny Gates

The owners of the renowned Argentinean restaurant Hacienda Patagonica have now opened the doors to their second restaurant, El Origen, next to Frank’s Corner opposite Centro Comercial Plaza del Mar in the heart of Marbella – much to the excitement of their many regular customers. While Hacienda Patagonica has gained its popularity by serving mouth-watering Argentinean tapas-style meat in a buzzy, fastmoving environment, El Origen offers a different kind of dining concept – larger dishes in a more typical restaurant setting – although El Origen is far from a typical Marbella restaurant as it has many personal touches that make it so special. The décor has been lovingly put together by the Argentinean owners themselves, drawing inspiration from their motherland such as references to polo, a sport that Argentina is so famous for, and a quote from a well-known Argentinean poem, Martín Fierro. When you enter El Origen you are struck by its size and warm ambience, with wooden panelled walls and flooring making it truly welcoming. It is a relatively large restaurant with low lighting, a wide, open kitchen and, at the far end, a bodega where they have a large selection of wines from all over the world. If you prefer to eat al fresco, there is also an outside terrace area at the front of the restaurant where you can watch the world go by.

The El Origen menu has many similarities to that of Hacienda Patagonica but the portion sizes are larger. The owners wanted to maintain the concept of offering premium Argentinean meat at reasonable prices. There is a wide range of starters or a sharing platter enabling you to try a little of everything, including provoleta, chorizo, morcilla, empanada and French fries for just €26. There is entrecote at just €19, a Gaucho rib-eye for €45 and a mixed grill to share for just €29 and, if meat is not what you fancy, salads and pastas are also available. If you still have space for dessert, there are a number of homemade delights on offer such as tiramisu, chocolate brownie with caramel and whipped cream, and the famous Argentinean Pionono (a thin cake rolled in caramel with chocolate sauce). Following the success of Hacienda Patagonica and their great passion for Argentinean gastronomy, El Origen cannot fail to be a hit with the locals. El Origen Calle Gregorio Marañón, Marbella Tel. The port in Estepona has always been a hub of activity, especially on Sundays when the entire marina is transformed into a bustling market. Now there is one more special reason for visiting this vibrant area. A charming French couple have taken over the El Nuevo Embarcadero restaurant that adjoins the Club del Mar and is perched high above the western side of the port, boasting superlative views over the Mediterranean Sea. And what a find it is! When you enter El Nuevo Embarcadero, you are immediately met by a stylish bar area where you can relax and savour drinks on their modern lounge sofas. The bar then leads into a large open-plan restaurant that is filled with natural light as it is surrounded by floor-to-ceiling glass curtains, providing uninterrupted views out across the sea and converting this restaurant into a truly exceptional dining venue. When we visited, the restaurant was almost full with a sophisticated, buzzy ambience. The tables, with their beautifully laundered white tablecloths, are well spaced-out, giving a great sense of space and making you feel entirely relaxed. Their menu is extensive, with a wide variety of Mediterranean dishes specialising in fish and seafood to choose from; but if you fancy meat there is also a selection of steak, lamb chops and Iberian pork. The wine menu has sev-

eral Spanish and French wines including Pouilly Fuissé and Sancerre, as well as good-quality champagnes. Head waiter Miguel told us that, among other dishes, they pride themselves on their high-quality paellas, so we felt we should order a seafood paella to try it out for ourselves. Miguel was not wrong… our paella had a generous quantity of succulent seafood that was perfectly cooked with creamy rice full of flavour. At just €18 per head, we felt this was extremely good value and we simply could not finish it all. If you fancy a visit to Estepona port, then it is imperative that you try out El Nuevo Embarcadero. Popular Mijas Costa seafront venue Max Beach has reopened its doors following a huge renovation. If you loved Max Beach before, you cannot fail to be blown away by its recent dramatic overhaul. The new décor is Miami-style with turquoise notes popping through the predominantly contemporary white decoration. One major change to Max Beach has been the addition of an infinity pool that looks directly out over the glistening Mediterranean Sea. By the pool you can take a single bed for €30 for the day, and double beds are just €50. VIP beds that can accommodate up to four people are €80 for the day – a veritable bargain compared with other beach clubs along the coast! Max Beach’s pool area is a place where you can relax with waiter service while listening to Ibiza chill-out music and enjoying unsurpassable views out to sea or overlooking their modernistic pool. Head chef Marc Barbot uses only fresh ingredients and everything, including the desserts, is homemade. The menu is vast and steered towards French/Belgian cuisine, but there is something to satisfy all diverse tastes. One menu for €25 includes a starter (such as salmon tartar, St Jacques scallops, prawns pil pil or foie gras), main course (featuring the likes of chicken vol-au-vent, risotto or spare ribs) and dessert. If you are a little hungrier, there is an even heartier menu for just €32. Pastas and rice dishes are also featured on the menu, and diners with special diets or allergies are well accommodated for. By the pool, you can order snacks such as burgers and salads including the famous Max Beach Salad with warm goat’s cheese, apple, smoked salmon, honey and pine nuts. The cocktails are all made from fresh fruit, with no syrups and with the highest quality liqueurs and spirits. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served every day of the week, and on Sunday they offer a special roast of the day for €25 between 12pm and 7pm. The Sunday lunch includes a variety of six starters and six main courses, plus a selection of desserts to choose from. If you want to enjoy a drink at Max Beach later in the evening, their pub offers live music every night in a relaxing ambience between 8pm until 11pm. As manager Frank Spies notes, “Carl Creemers (owner of Max Beach) is passionate about offering a superlative beach club experience at any time of the day at great value. Everyone working here is experienced in their field so you are sure to get the best possible service.” Max Beach Riviera del Sol (Km. 198.1), Mijas Costa www.maxbeach.com Facebook, Twitter and Instagram: MaxBeachSpain For reservations: (+34) 952 932 780

Spanish DELI

Journey to the Heart of

Iberian Ham Production

First of all an admission… As our culinary correspondent had never visited Salamanca before, when Castro y González asked Home & Lifestyle if we would like to join an exclusive press trip to the premium ham producer’s main centre of operations in Castilla y León, the main lure was being able to check out the splendour of that venerable city. As it turned out, after a rail journey from Málaga on the AVE and a delayed three-hour trip by car from Madrid, we found ourselves detouring Salamanca and heading to Guijuelo – about 40 kilometres to the south – gazing despairingly at the gradually disappearing spires of the city’s iconic cathedrals. We were pacified with the promise that we would return for dinner that night but in the end the rather improvised nature of the visit precluded that and instead we dined at a nevertheless agreeable restaurant in Guijuelo, El Pernil. Salamanca will have to wait for another time. Earlier, before adjourning to our hotel (the Entredos), to freshen up for dinner (ostensibly in Salamanca), Miguel González Blanco – whose great grandfather raised individual pigs for the local market and whose grandfather founded the Castro y González Iberian ham business in 1910, gave us a tour of the company’s main production facility. Surprisingly for a wealthy village that is home to 60 per cent of Spain’s “jamón

128

ibérico” production – Guijuelo is quite unremarkable. With a population of around 5,000, the town has around 200 ham production factories with their “secaderos” (curing chambers), all of which creates a rather stark and underwhelming aesthetic in the village. The area’s real charm is out in the countryside, where Miguel took us the following morning. Along the way, he explained to Home & Lifestyle that a ham must be at least 50 per cent “ibérico” by law to receive that designation, although his company’s products are all either 75 or 100 cent Iberian bloodstock (most of the 50 per cent “Iberian” ham finds its way into supermarkets with plastic separators between the slices). The animals are born on a “mother” farm between Salamanca and Madrid then brought to Guijuelo at three months of age, where they remain – wandering free on a 700-hectare estate (no more than one pig per hectare) and feeding on acorns and home-milled grains – for between 12 and 15 months. They are then slaughtered “in accordance with strict animal welfare laws” and sent to the curing chambers. In addition to catering for the Spanish market, 12 per cent of Castro & Jiménez’s production is sent overseas, from the UK (the company’s biggest European market outside Spain) to China, the US and South America.

Fish & Fresh in Torremolinos

Sparkling Wines from Bodegas Lozano In recent years Spanish bodegas have been looking at ways of introducing young people to the pleasures of wine, beginning with simple, fresh, low-alcohol sparkling wines and gradually encouraging a taste for more complex varieties. This was one of the objectives when Bodegas Lozano organised an exclusive luncheon for the press at the iconic Santiago restaurant in Marbella, where they presented the refreshing Frizzante 5.5, as well as serving a Marqués de Toledo (Verdejo) white and two Oristán reds (crianza and reserva) during lunch. www.bodegas-lozano.com

Following the lead of Marbella with its Ambrosia market, La Galería in Fuengirola and La Merced in Málaga capital, Torremolinos has initiated a campaign to showcase its gourmet credentials – highlighted by fried fish and seafood delicacies but also including a diverse array of other products. The campaign was launched with a “Fish & Fresh” initiative in June involving more than 80 establishments (including the municipality’s popular chiringuitos) and the launch of an online municipal gastronomy office (see Events P.141). www.comerentorremolinos.es

Flavours of Hungary in Marbella Hungary’s ambassador to Spain Enikö Györi travelled from Madrid to host a presentation at the Ambrosia gourmet market in Puerto Banús of her country’s cuisine. Accompanied by colleagues from the Madrid embassy and Andalucian consulate, as well as Zoltán Somogyi (executive director for programme and coordination of the World Tourism Organisation), the ambassador noted that Hungarian gastronomy was regaining its “original fame” from the Middle Ages, with Budapest experiencing a “gastronomic revolution”. Those present were able to savour Tokaji wine (said by Louis XV of France to be the “wine of kings and the king of wines”), goulash (prepared at the Madrid embassy and specially brought to Marbella for the occasion), Mangalica cured ham and Kürtöskalács spit cake. www.hungaria-andalucia.com

Pizzamos

Making pizzas… and having fun

It’s not often we hear pizza making described as sexy but that’s what a new culinary project near Coín is offering foodies. Created by food photographer, chef and Home & Lifestyle Magazine collaborator Peter Staes, Pizzamos is “an invitation to get together with your friends (or make new ones) while having fun making your own pizzas”. All the pizzas are made under the watchful eye of Peter (at his idyllic mountain hideaway) and are shared by the group. “You’ll get to try many original flavour combinations of fresh locally sourced ingredients,” he says, “and you might discover that you have hidden talents as a pizzaiolo.” Peter’s interest in gastronomy covers just about every aspect of his life, from the joy of eating, baking and cooking to creating high-level gastronomy features as a professional photographer. This passion, he says, also extends to the

132

social aspect of sharing great food with good friends and like-minded people. Why pizza then? “Freshly baked pizza is delicious and is the perfect dish for sharing. Offering a lot of creative possibilities for different styles of toppings makes it a friend for everybody, and touching fresh homemade dough, shaping it into a pizza and baking it in a wood-fired oven is just incredibly… sexy.” In addition to “Let’s Make Pizza”, Pizzamos events include a Eurovision contest, “VIP Gourmet”, “Group Mountain Fun”, corporate events and special celebrations, Tel. WINE NOTES

Spanish Wines AND THE CHINESE CONNECTION By AJ Linn

All Spanish wine regions have almost routinely been through the same development phases over the past 50 years. In the beginning local farmers made wine for their own consumption, and then neighbours asked if they could buy some so they would also be able to enjoy it. If the wine was any good (most of it wasn’t back then owing to lack of knowledge about the basic tenets of winemaking) people from outside the area started to arrive looking for the product, until slowly a wine would gather notoriety on a wider geographical base. Remember at this stage it was sold direct from the barrel, and customers had to bring their own take-away containers of glass or plastic. Eventually a level of popular acceptance would be reached, obliging the farmer to make a crucial decision. Should he start bottling the wine and sell it at a higher price, or should he merely continue as he always had, and never expect to get rich from it? Assuming he went the bottling route, it is likely he would plant more vines on his land and give up milking cows. If he was lucky, his wine or wines became recognised and he and his family never had to worry about money again. Unlikely though, as everyone knows that to make money from wine you have to be very lucky indeed. There are currently nearly 30,000 different Spanish wines on sale, so the competition is intense. As each region gains in reputation and market share, so the big winemakers from other areas start arriving, and for the farmer-turned-winemaker the real jackpot comes when someone rings his doorbell and announces he is interested in buying the business. Then it’s cashing-in time, and the lucky ex-farmer can stop worrying about whether it will be raining at harvest time and start worrying about the taxman. It has happened everywhere from Rioja to Ribera del Duero, and from Toro to Rías Baíxas/Albariño. Buying a bodega that already has its brands firmly established in the market is the best option, but also the most expensive, and neither totally risk-free. A change of winemaker or a run of bad vintages can undo all the good built up over decades. Perhaps better and more cost-effective to buy vineyards. This is the route that Xu Liang and winemaker Cote García Díez decided on once their decision to set up a new winery in Ribera del Duero had been taken. Cote, from Ribera’s Peñafiel, had already enjoyed success in other wineries in the region, and Xu Liang, son of Shu Ping Xu, long-established in Spain in the restaurant business (La Dehesa Group, Madrid) and distributor of French and Spanish quality wines in China, were confident that they could achieve what many people fail at – establish a new wine brand. In China it has always been the big French names that have pushed prices to unimaginable levels, usually in the Hong Kong wine auctions, so it could even be considered a rash decision to attempt to establish a market for an unknown Spanish wine in such a difficult environment. But backed by the assurance that Shu Ping Xu’s extensive network of contacts in China would enable him to market a new Spanish wine providing its quality was exceptional, and after inspecting hundreds of vineyards metre by metre over an extended period, five plots were acquired. In record time three wines are already on the market. These are Prémora 2014 (currently priced at €15.95 for Spanish buyers), Buenagente 2013 (€32) and Camino del Abuelo 2013 (€320). In case you are wondering how a wine with its reputation still unestablished can cost as much as the last-named, the explanation is that it is one of the very small number of Spanish wines made from clones of vines that were growing before the

134

phylloxera bug wiped out 99 per cent of Spain’s vineyards, after doing the same thing in the rest of Europe. In some very isolated areas the fatal disease never got a hold, and they have not had American vines (naturally phylloxera-resistant) grafted onto them, which was the standard solution. This grape is actually known as Aragonés, with about half the production per vine as the native Tinta del País, also called Tempranillo, accounting to a large degree for the high price. If not already there, these three Spanish missionaries will soon be winging their way to Hang Zhou, near Shanghai, where Shu Ping Xu has converted an old palace into a veritable wine temple. Here he holds educational tastings as a way of transmitting to his countrymen his love of Spanish wine. Another of his projects, even more challenging possibly, is the setting up of a franchise for Spanish gastronomic products, combined with restaurants, throughout China. Interestingly, this is possibly the first Spanish wine made by Chinese investors for the Chinese market, and it befits someone who is such an enthusiast of Spanish gastronomy, as are Shu Ping Xu and his son, who refers to himself as Julian, that they can only be wished every success in the project. The Costa del Sol distributor for these wines is Casa Pablo (Marbella)

Cutting-Edge Breakthroughs for

Vision and Lung Patients

By John Schieszer

ARTIFICIAL DEVICE HELPING THOSE WITH LOW VISION A new portable artificial vision device is now helping those who are blind to read a message on an electronic device, a newspaper article or a menu. The promise of new software technology has now gone from the scientists’ bench to helping the blind in a way never before possible. The new device is called OrCam and it is capable of recognising text, monetary denominations and faces, and can be programmed to recognise other objects. It includes a miniature camera and earpiece, which can be mounted to the right side of any spectacle frame. A cord connects the unit to a pack that houses the device’s battery and computer (held in the user’s hand or clipped on a belt or put in a pocket). The device can be activated by tapping it, pressing the trigger button, or pointing at a target item. It takes a picture of whatever the user is eyeing. Using optical character recognition technology, the device then reads aloud any text found in the picture that was taken, which is heard only by the user via the earpiece and not by others nearby. The OrCam was recently made commercially available and costs approximately US$2,500-$3,500. Researchers at the University of California Davis Eye Centre in Sacramento (California) evaluated the usefulness of an OrCam for patients with low vision. The study included 12 legally blind patients, with best-corrected visual acuity of 20/200 or worse in their better eye. The researchers found that, after an initial training session, patients were able to perform the tasks better (at least nine of the 10 items on the test) when using the portable artificial vision device. Average scores with the device were also better in seven patients who used other low-vision aids. SMARTPHONES AIDING LUNG PATIENTS IN NEW WAYS Researchers in Seattle have developed SpiroCall, a new health-sensing tool that can accurately measure lung function from anywhere in the world over a simple phone call. It is designed to work with older mobile phones and landlines, not just smartphones.

Many people who have asthma, cystic fibrosis or other chronic lung diseases have no way of measuring how well their lungs are functioning outside of a clinic or doctor’s visit. “We wanted to be able to measure lung function on any type of phone you might encounter around the world, smartphones, dumb phones, landlines and pay phones,” said Shwetak Patel, a professor of computer science and engineering and electrical engineering at the University of Washington in Seattle. “With SpiroCall, you can call a 1-800 number, blow into the phone and use the telephone network to test your lung function.” In 2012, researchers from the UW’s UbiComp Lab introduced SpiroSmart, which allows individuals to monitor their lung function by blowing into their smartphones. The individual takes a deep breath in and exhales as hard and fast as they can until they can’t exhale any more. The phone’s microphone senses sound and pressure from that exhalation and sends the data to a central server, which uses machine-learning algorithms to convert the data into standard measurements of lung function. Over the last four years, the team has collected data from more than 4,000 patients who have visited clinics in Seattle and Tacoma, as well as in India and Bangladesh, where clinicians have measured lung function using both SpiroSmart and a commercial spirometer. That comparative data has improved the performance of the machine-learning algorithms. The research team also developed a 3-D printed whistle that can be used in conjunction with SpiroCall and which changes pitch when the patient exhales. The whistle is designed to address training challenges by enabling patients to hear what a “good” test sounds like. The whistle may help improve the test performance for patients who are very ill and whose vocal cords are not able produce enough sound for the phone’s microphone to pick up.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Pet Bonding and the Love Hormone By Rachel Garrod

We all love our furry friends. Nothing beats that heart-warming wiggy, waggy welcome when we get home, and those adorable eyes gazing gratefully at ours. But did you know there’s a real chemical attraction that helps to form this bond with our pets? There’s good evidence that playing with our pets releases the “love hormone” Oxytocin. It’s called the “love hormone” because it’s released during orgasm (for both men and women) and fosters feelings of bonding, contentedness and wellbeing. Oxytocin has many other health benefits such as improvement in mood and anxiety. Miho Nagasawa and Takefumi Kikusui, both dog lovers themselves, decided to examine what happens to human levels of Oxytocin when we pet and play with our dogs. Their experiment involved 55 dog owners who brought their dogs to the lab. Urine samples, taken before and after a 30-minute play session, were tested for the presence of the hormone. In order to make comparisons a control group was asked to sit in a room with their dogs but avoid all eye contact. The researchers then divided the groups according to Oxytocin levels and reviewed the taped play sessions. They found that levels were around 20 per cent higher in owners who held the gaze of their dog on average for 2.5 minutes compared with those who held the gaze for 45 seconds or less. To put this into context, that’s an increase in Oxytocin equivalent to that when

138

a parent holds their child. What’s more, the owners who were told to avoid their dog’s gaze entirely showed a decrease in Oxytocin levels. So gazing into the eyes of our dog isn’t just an affectionate trait, it’s actually good for us! However, the benefits of bonding with your pet may include more than the release of Oxytocin. In a separate study owners were asked to stroke their dog for half an hour. Blood samples were taken before and after the petting session, and in this study the researchers observed an increase in not only Oxytocin but also a whole range of other hormones associated with feelings of euphoria, pain relief, bonding and the sensation of pleasure. And as if this weren’t enough, the owners’ blood pressure dropped too. Now this is all pretty good news for us, as dog owners, but the really amazing part is that after the petting session not only did human levels of Oxytocin show an increase but they also did in the dogs. So you were right: your dog really does love you and it’s chemical! Rachel Garrod PhD MSc is a physiotherapy lecturer and stop smoking counsellor Tel. Officially opened in December 2014, and already well established as a major home décor outlet on the Costa del Sol, Magyk Lumière is now transforming its store into a concept boutique. Owner Andrea Rogmann was originally from Germany but she has lived in Spain for many years. She did not have enough space at home to keep “all the things she loves” so she opened her 200 square metre shop in San Pedro de Alcántara’s Calle Lagasca – conveniently located near the town’s wide new boardwalk and ample parking areas. The store stocks a “Bohemian-chic” collection of her favourite items, an eclectic mix of styles from different cultures. In addition to lighting, furniture

and decorative items, the new concept store has exclusive items including hand-painted bags, belts and jewellery made by different artists, as well as accessories, clothes and tableware from Morocco, all unique pieces made by designers. This family business offers a truly international service, with staff speaking German, English, Arabic, French and Spanish. C/ Lagasca, San Pedro de Alcántara, Marbella Tel. news LIBERTY SEGUROS

A Time for Extra Care on the Roads With the summer influx of tourists creating additional risks on the road, Liberty Seguros has offered some special advice for motorists who want to avoid incidents or are involved in an accident. “Always make sure your tyre pressures are correct by checking them at least once a month. Also check your car’s radiator level is topped up; the last thing you want is to overheat and have to wait for a breakdown truck on the edge of a busy motorway! It’s also illegal to run out of screen wash, so make sure this is topped up too. And driving with flip-flops or shoes with no back is not permitted either. Needless to say, seat belts must be worn all round, and young children need safety harnesses. Using mobile phones is a definite no-no, including texting, which is probably worse than speaking. Should the unthinkable happen, here are some tips that everyone, from a new driver to an experienced one, should remember in the case of an accident: • Stay calm and wear the reflective vest. • Get to a safe area near the accident scene, turn on your emergency flashers and use the two triangles. • Make sure everyone is okay and call 112, if necessary. • When it is safe, take pictures of the vehicles involved, damage, road signs, etc. • Get statements and contact information from any witnesses. • Complete the accident report: write down the other driver’s licence number, insurance details, vehicle information and phone number. Remember it has to be signed by both drivers and reported within seven days. If you need road assistance, call immediately to 900 101 369 (Liberty free phone number), where you will be attended in your own language.” Tel. (+34) 902 255 258 www.libertyexpatriates.es

SPECIALIST ADVICE

Limits on Cash Payments in Spain Article supplied by Spanish legal and fiscal advisors Arcos & Lamers

At the end of 2012 modifications were made to the Spanish tax and financial regulations. Some of the changes were introduced to increase administrative actions in the prevention of and fight against fraud. One of these initiatives involved setting limits on cash payments for certain transactions. A cash limit was established on all transactions when one of the parties involved acts as an entrepreneur or professional and the amount being paid is equal to or above €2,500 or its equivalent exchange value for a foreign currency. Nevertheless, this limit can be increased to €15,000 or its equivalent exchange value for a foreign currency when the payer is an individual who can prove that their fiscal residency is not in Spain and they are not acting as an entrepreneur or professional. In order to calculate the amount involved in a transaction we are required to take into account the sum of all partial payments for the purchase of the goods or services rendered. Cash payments are considered to be all those included in Article 34.2 of the Act10/2010, dated 28 April, the law for prevention of money laundering and financing of terrorism. These include the following: • Banknotes and coins, Spanish or foreign. • Bank cheques made out to the bearer in any currency. • Any other form of payment, including electronic means, that can be used as a payment to the bearer.

154

With regards to any payments that by law cannot be made in cash, all parties involved in the transaction should ensure they keep all the support documents for the payment during a period of five years from the day of the transaction, to be able to prove that the payment was made by other means other than cash. And, if requested by the tax authorities, they must present proof of the payment. Non-fulfilment of these cash limitations constitutes a tax infringement, and all parties can be considered offenders: the one paying with cash and the one receiving the cash payment. The tax agency can move against either of the parties, or against both of them. A breach of these limitations is considered serious. If one of the parties involved in a transaction that breaches the cash limits reports to the tax authorities within the following three months after the transaction, informing them about the cash amount and identifying the other party involved, they will have any responsibility removed and will not be liable to any penalty. The penalty is a monetary fine proportional to 25 per cent of the cash paid. Arcos & Lamers Asociados Avda. Ricardo Soriano, Marbella Tel. (+34) 952 775 010 www.arcos-lamersasociados.com
