FROM THE
EDITOR There is something about September-October that reinvigorates the spirit. For those of us not entirely enamoured with steamy Costa del Sol Julys and Augusts, the first hints of autumn provide some welcome respite from billowing levante winds, bumper-to-bumper tourist traffic, and waiters explaining ruefully that there are no free tables at your favourite restaurant. As the angst of August gives way to the serenity of September, it is also a time when, having spent much of the summer enjoying the renowned Mediterranean lifestyle with family and friends, we return our focus to the home – and, invariably, the need for a spruce-up before winter sets in. To that end, our all-embracing “Décor & Design” section is once again full of trend-setting ideas, creative innovations and invaluable tips. With the searing summer months now behind us for another year, outdoor living, entertaining and simply chilling out becomes far more pleasant, and the options available this autumn are wideranging – from versatile poolside and terrace furniture to flamboyant pergolas and moveable shade sails. As the days become shorter, ensuring adequate, appropriate and attractive lighting is also an increasingly important priority, whether the aim is to create a dramatic outdoor ambient effect or stunning indoor focal points. That is just a starting point, however, as now is also the ideal time to revamp other key areas of the home… adding a touch of autumn glamour to the bedroom, giving the kitchen a more sleek modern style, infusing living areas with innovative fabrics, subtle floor coverings and elegant wallpaper patterns, making a statement with tableware that wouldn’t be out of place in a top restaurant… and carrying out a major home de-clutter by creating clever storage spaces. This issue we also incorporate our “First Person” interviews into the main home decoration sections, providing expanded insight into the professional worlds of leading businesspeople who have helped transform the Costa del Sol into a European standard-bearer for interior design and home décor. As they always tell us, one of the key secrets of their success is staying abreast of latest trends, and to that end many of them will be heading to France and the UK in September for two of the world’s premier exhibitions: Maison & Objet in Paris and the London Design Festival. Finally, as we also re-focus our attention on personal health and wellbeing after – perhaps – a little too much summer indulgence, a timely reminder in our “Lifestyle” section of the benefits of extra virgin olive oil and a report on new studies suggesting cinnamon can stimulate our brainpower.

FIRST PERSON
STYLISH AND EFFECTIVE PROTECTION FROM THE SUN
INTERVIEW WITH SVETLANA DIMITROVA FROM ARTE DEL LUSSO
Photos by Johnny Gates
What gave you the idea of starting this company? Spain is a sunny country, and it is clear that there is demand for sun protection systems, curtain poles and curtains. In addition, we have had extensive experience in this business in other countries as well. In Spain we have chosen the same path, but with some changes. For example, in other countries we are the manufacturer, but in Spain we are just presenting a few leading brands. We have long-time, well-established connections with those factories, which gives us an absolute advantage in undertaking projects. We have extensive knowledge of the product and its intended use in different situations and, most importantly, we are able to provide good installation work. You have a large showroom in San Pedro… Why did you choose this town? Yes, that’s true. Our showroom is big and yet we do not have enough space for new models. Perhaps in the near future we will open another salon for top-level clients only. San Pedro, in our opinion, is a very convenient place for all customers living around Marbella. It is easily accessible from different sides, from Elviria as well from Estepona. Just around us are many interesting urbanisations with potential customers. Our work with clients often takes place with the involvement of the
24
designer or architect, and our location is also very convenient for them. Besides that, a lot of banks – visited by potential clients – are close by. How would you describe the products you work with? Our products are the best, and what is important is they are available to many people in the field of sun protection systems and window design these days. We have chosen the world’s best factories for quality and variety. The products are at the medium level or higher. Our brands are so well known and technically so powerful that we can honestly talk about the possibility of solving any complex project, whether it is a big roller blinds system or simply curtains. The range of products allows us to find solutions to the most difficult situations. Actually this is our mission. Our philosophy is to offer an individual approach to each of our clients. They all are different and from different countries. Everyone has their own preferences and their traditional views. And all you need to do is satisfy and please them. Therefore, we have chosen the world’s leading brands, which enables us to solve the most complex tasks. The range is huge and it’s not possible in this space to list all of them. Just briefly, there are roller blinds, pleated blinds of various types of mouldings for all kinds of windows, curtain fabrics from the best manufacturers… Various oper-

ating and control types, electric systems integrated into a smart home system… It is best to come to our shop and check them out, because we have more than 100 real and working samples and more than half of them are electrical systems. What is the most important thing clients need to know before choosing a sun protection system? It’s necessary just to know our phone number! We will do then our best. But seriously… the most important thing to remember is that the sun is very active in Spain. Based on this fact, we advise clients to select the fabric for curtains, curtain tracks and poles, and sun protection systems, that effectively and properly meet these conditions. It must be remembered that fabrics can fade, and plastic parts and components of curtain systems can dry up at such temperatures and eventually break. And it happens not in five or 10 years, but much earlier. Therefore, we strongly urge you to have a consultation by specialists. It’s very important to remember that the quality of the product and the quality of the installation are both extremely important. It is just as important to bear in mind that windows are one of the main accents in any interior. A stylistically correct decision when it comes to window design should improve your interior, and emphasise its individuality. That is why
we recommend that people always refer to specialists, who will take into account your wishes and offer the best and most practical solution. What is your vision for the company? I would just like to mention again that this is not our first experience in the business. In Spain yes, but not in other countries. We see great potential in our company. We have selected a good team, all our staff are professionals with years of experience and we receive excellent support from our suppliers as well. We are actively developing relationships with designers and architects, and we visit the most important world exhibitions and fairs. In addition, we are displaying the latest new products in our showroom. All of this points to ongoing success. Half a year ago we started to sell only. Two months later, after the opening of our showroom, we brought components and parts for curtain tracks and the necessary equipment. Our plans include an expansion of the range of fabrics for curtains and the possibility of working on another showroom project. Arte del Lusso C/ Lagasca 64, San Pedro de Alcántara, Marbella Tel. ugs soften the general look and acoustics of the living space and are more versatile than carpets, as they are easily changeable if you decide to redesign your room. You can even position your rug on a wall if you get fed up with it on your floor! One more practical aspect of rugs is that they provide a safe space for children’s play areas or in bathrooms and kitchens, reducing the risk of slipping over and serving as a cushion should someone fall. They are also great for hiding any imperfections in the flooring; in fact, they can even protect it.

LONG-STANDING FAMILY TEXTILE COMPANY WITH A CONTEMPORARY OUTLOOK INTERVIEW WITH MANUEL GANCEDO (GENERAL MANAGER OF GANCEDO) AND BEATRIZ GANCEDO PUIG DE LA BELLACASA
Photos by Johnny Gates
Gancedo has been established for over 70 years. What is the secret to your success? Gancedo has existed for three generations thanks to the family’s total commitment and dedication. We’ve remained united even during the more difficult times, preserving our enthusiasm for maintaining the legacy of my father and grandfather. The third generation has found itself in the midst of a lean era so we have been forced to renew ourselves constantly and adapt to the changing times. Having our own factory and production workshop gives us a competitive advantage over the others, as we can maintain almost the whole sales process under internal control. We have also always stood out for the expert advice we offer to clients, as well as the great quality and variety of our products – at reasonable prices. What kinds of products and services do Gancedo offer? We are a “textile editor” (we design and produce fabrics for their use in upholstery, curtains, cushions…) and we also sell rugs, carpets, wallpaper and passementerie (through our Galón brand), and are exclusive distributors for major
62
international textile brands: Sanderson, Liberty, Robert Allen, Fabricut, Voyage... We have our own factory in Valencia, as well as a production workshop, so we take care of the whole process: from the original fabric idea, through its manufacturing process and sales (we offer excellent advice to both professional and individual clients) to the production, installation and post-sales service. How do you select new fabrics? We usually go to textile fairs, but we also select from our archives and recolour old designs, or we buy new designs and develop new prints and upholstery fabrics. Why should customers buy from Gancedo? We offer a great variety of textiles in different styles, following latest design trends and always with the finest quality and really competitive prices. In addition, we stand out for the excellent service we provide to clients. The years of experience we have in the sector mean we can offer personalised advice, both to individual clients and to interior design and decoration professionals.

We also have a contract specialist (hotels) at each of our shops, who can undertake “made-to-measure” work and advise industry professionals about fireproof, resistant and washable fabrics, placing their textile projects in the hands of experts to ensure 100 per cent satisfaction. How do you see the trends in fabrics developing at the moment? Ethnic trend: fabrics inspired in countries from Asia or Africa. Natural trend: plains and sheers in cotton and linen, soft and nice-touch fabrics. Floral trend: prints with lots of flowers. Silk trend: damasques, plains and velvets with a silky look, in silver grey, gold yellow, emerald green and sapphire blue colours. What do you think the future holds for Gancedo? As a company that adapts to the new times and market requirements, recently Gancedo renewed its website, connecting with clients and followers through social networking. We have also created a new accessories range: Gancedo Ready (cushions, pillows, plaids, blankets…) and revamped our furniture line with both classic and contemporary pieces.
We believe the immediate future should be focused on continuing along this path of bringing us closer to our clients through new technology. One of our challenges is also to include a fourth generation in the company. In conclusion… Gancedo was founded in Barcelona in 1945 by the grandfather of our current generation (José Gancedo Otero), the company was then run by our father (Pepe Gancedo) and since 1993 – when he passed away – five of the six siblings have gradually come on board to run the family business. Currently, Gancedo employs 60 people, including a local office in Mexico and six shops in Spain. It also exports its collections to the five continents through an extensive network of distributors. HOME AUTOMATION
THE SMART HOME OR AS IT IS CALLED IN SPAIN… DOMÓTICA
Photos by David Toms
What is this and what can you control to make your life easier? First of all, you can control, if not all, almost all the electronics in a house one way or another. The main, most habitual systems that can be controlled (in no special order) are. Lighting Heating and Cooling (HVAC) Sound system Video system (TV, etc.) Blinds, shutters, awnings CCTV Security system Solar system, water or photovoltaics IT system I am building a new house… What should I think about and where do I start? The lighting system, definitely, as that is the hardest and most expensive to change after the house is built. You also need to make a decision if you want to control all of the house or just a part of it. The benefit of controlling all is that when you leave the house you can turn off everything with one button; or, if you are away, from your mobile device (note: the latter normally requires some kind of subscription or licence fee). The next thing to choose is, do I want dimming or just on/off, or a mix of both – which is also possible. Dimming is more expensive due to the light circuits but it does also provide the best light effects once adjusted. A secondary effect is that you normally save energy as well.
100
On/off, as the name suggests, is better suited to rooms where no dimming is needed, such as toilets, storage rooms and maybe guest bedrooms as well. Once all this is decided and installed, the system needs to be programmed for light scenes (assuming it has dimming). An example of that is a living room with an open kitchen. You want to turn on the living room lighting and you have some paintings on the wall that you have direct light on? During the daytime you might not want to turn on the lighting for the paintings, but let’s say after 9pm you want to do so according to the light outside. Then the programmer will set that light to come on after 9pm and maybe at 35 per cent of the full light so it is not as a light beam but instead as a background light. At the same time the kitchen lighting will turn on at just 25 per cent so you can see well enough in that space; while the other main lighting in the living room will be at 50 per cent. Now you have controlled one area with one button, and of course you can control them all as you desire – and individually as well. This is called a light scene. For garden lights maybe you want to start soft at dawn and, when it’s dark outside, on full to give maximum effect, but just after midnight you want to turn it off to save energy. Then the system will do all that for you – and that’s also a light scene. However you set up your home automation system, the result will create a more convenient and comfortable living area – and enhance your lifestyle options. TD Sat & Sound Tel. JOINING FORCES TO ENSURE EXCELLENCE AND SYNERGY INTERVIEW WITH JESÚS ESTEPA RUBIO, DANIEL SÁNCHEZ MESA (ER ARQUITECTOS), JAVIER MARTOS LARA AND SERGIO JORDAN (OMAR CONSTRUCCIONES) FROM BESPOKE LIVING

Bespoke Living consists of two different companies… Can you tell us more about what you do? Bespoke Living is a commercial brand that encompasses two well established and highly regarded companies in the world of architecture and construction that seek out collaborative and associated synergies in order to provide products of the highest quality and guarantees to clients. The philosophy is based on all those involved in a building’s design and construction process working jointly together right from the first minute. This results in total control of and familiarisation with the product during its development, thus minimising costs, maximising quality and ensuring that everything adheres exactly to our clients requirements and demands. In this way, through one single interlocutor and at the same time, the client can be in contact, with all those who would normally be involved in the architectural design and construction process.
102
What projects are you involved with? Bespoke Living has developed all kinds of projects, comprising different sizes and uses, both for public and private initiatives, and each of them covering diverse circumstances. However, at our Marbella office we are centred on and specialise in the residential sphere, where design and construction of luxury villas has a special role. Each villa is a private world, a new challenge we face with absolute commitment, and with our enthusiasm and energy renewed, taking the opportunity of improving and drawing even closer to beauty and progress. What makes a perfect home in your opinion? To create the perfect home all you have to do is achieve spaces that enter the hearts of those living there. In the residential sphere, there is no typology better than another one; nor is there any universal design.

A perfect home is nothing more than one that makes us pulsate within its interior. To that end, it is important to create spaces and ambiences “with soul”; the project needs to have points of contact with the developer. This is achieved by a ”round-trip job”, starting from the criteria and objective of analysing the physical conditions where the home is located, through an intellectual work process. How do you see the future for villa construction and design on the Costa del Sol? For us the future is an exciting and very attractive challenge, to create new architectural and urban forms that analyse errors committed in the past and strive to transform this wonderful area into an international standard-bearer for quality and comfort. Each project is a research process, an opportunity for advancement and regeneration.
In conclusion… At Bespoke Living we are completely convinced that our work philosophy is the best tool to fulfil all of a client’s expectations and desires in an effective, energetic and optimum manner. More and more companies are joining forces, taking on the best aspects of others to ensure that their work evolves into higher levels of quality and control. This means that a client’s sensations, when it comes to their desires, are both compliant and satisfactory. Having confidence in Bespoke Living is having confidence in professionalism, seriousness, effectiveness and efficiency. Bespoke Living Boulevard Príncipe Alfonso de Hohenlohe, Urb. FIRST PERSON
A NEW CONCEPT IN PROPERTY INVESTMENT AND DESIGN INTERVIEW WITH MARCO DALLI, CO-OWNER OF MARMORIN PROPERTY AND DESIGN CENTER
When a group of talented designers and entrepreneurs opened the 700 square metre Marmorin Property and Design Center in the early months of last year, curiosity erupted with people wanting to know what the concept was and who was part of it. Just over 18 months later, the Marmorin Property and Design Center has firmly established itself as a central hub for property investment and design, with eight independent companies and manufacturers from all different areas of design and construction working together under one roof. We interviewed the charismatic Marco Dalli to find out more about this unique set-up… Not many people are aware of the property side of the business. Tell us more about that… We have in place a broker who we know to be well-connected in most of the top real estate agencies who sends us regular alerts on good investments in key locations along the Coast. From this information we visit and assess the best investments for our investor clients – saving any timewasting. We then contact a list of relevant clients to inform them of the latest property deals on the market that suit their budget and requirements. As many of our properties need refurbishment, the Marmorin Design Center is an ideal place to realize the project as all of the specialists involved are working together under one roof therefore it makes the communication between all parties involved a lot easier and everything much more efficient. We project manage everything from start to finish ensuring the project comes in on budget and on time - not many companies can guarantee that.
we offer an all-encompassing service that no other company on the Coast can. As we are all under one roof, the lines of communication are completely open, leaving no room for misunderstandings and with total control from purchase to renovation. Our collaborators are some of the most reputable within their professions. David Hidalgo, for example, is one of the top lighting designers in Europe, and to have him based inside Marmorin is a big plus. So take us through the process… Well, it’s not uncommon for some of our clients to start their project over a lunch or dinner in our showroom kitchen with a glass of wine and a dish of fettuccine with fresh tomato sauce. It sounds strange but it’s an Italian thing about breaking bread before business, and we specifically set up (what we call) the secret kitchen inside the studio for this purpose. If the client already has a property or project to talk about, it starts off with a meeting with the project manager. If someone is looking for a property, we can provide them with the latest information on property investment opportunities, and if the client decides to purchase a property through us or someone else, we can then also take care of any refurbishment. Following approval of a design, which can be carried out by our 3D design studio, we then have specialists who are on-hand from all different spheres of design and manufacturing that can carry-out the project with the objective of it being on time and on budget. It’s about having control and a bit of fun along the way!
What are the benefits of going to the Marmorin Property and Design Center over anywhere else? Everyone working in the studio is an expert in their specific field – no one is a jack-of-all-trades in the Marmorin Design Center. When we all come together,

NATURE & LIFE

With the Olympics organisers in Brazil making their opening ceremony’s theme all about the global problems we have, such as warming, deforestation and the incessant attack on the very resources we need to sustain our lives, what better than to feature an extremely simple initiative in this latest chapter of “The Green Evolution”. We throw too much away – packaging, tins, plastic bottles, which are my particular pet hate, and millions of tonnes of household food stuffs – and one Spanish woman said, “Enough!”. This is what Carmen Hijosa has done with 40,000 tonnes of pineapple waste that had been left to rot or be burned. She turned this waste into fabric which looks and feels like leather. As pineapple leaves have one of the finest cellulose fibres in the world, she has developed a way to use this to produce a faux leather fabric. One square metre of the fabric weighs less than leather, costs much less, and is fire-retardant. The fabric called Piñatex is made in the Philippines and no land, water, fertilisers or pesticides are used in its manufacture. An excellent idea for a completely eco-friendly product and one which I see in the very near future being used for interiors. I would use it for sure, in many ways. No cows were killed in the manufacture of this product… www.ananas-anam.com

HOUSE OF GAMES IN PARIS The theme of the second Maison & Objet show of the year in Paris (2 to 6 September), “House of Games”, has been chosen to “relate more closely to our living environment”. According to Vincent Grégoire, scenographer for the “Inspirations Space”, the theme “marks the return of a renewed baroque, dandy style, which leaves ample room for fantasy, eccentricity and appeal. “More generally speaking, we are noticing an increasing interest in board games, as well as private clubs, which counterbalance the lonely life we lead behind screens and help us restructure our lives around rules we can easily apply. A recent study carried out by NellyRodi for Google into the relationship between the Generation Z and luxury has shown that, contrary to common beliefs, its members have a great capacity to switch off and value the notions of sharing and community very highly.” The “Designer of the Year” to be honoured at the September show is Britain’s Ilse Crawford, who started her career as a journalist and was the founding editor-in-chief of Elle Decoration UK. After over a decade in magazines, “with
108
a mission to put human needs and desires back at the centre of design”, she founded her multi-disciplinary practice Studioilse in 2001. Other designers honoured in 2016 were Rafael de Cárdenas (Maison & Objet Americas), André Fu (Maison & Objet Asia) and Eugeni Quitlet (January edition of Maison & Objet Paris). www.maison-objet.com CREATIVE TRENDS IN LONDON This is the time of the year when London declares itself to be the creative capital of the world, “a city where home-grown talent and international perspectives blend to create a dynamic and forward-thinking environment where design thrives”. The London Design Festival was established in 2003 and since then has grown into a citywide celebration bringing together a global community of designers, artists, architects and retailers “to activate projects responding to the transformative power of design”. This year (from 17 to 25 September) the more than 400 festival events and installations will range from an engaging programme at the Victoria and Albert Museum to large-scale projects across landmark locations. ganisers, “These interventions reflect the stimulating diversity of creative thinking, and are all united in their ability to inspire, entertain and arouse curiosity.” Now in its sixth year, Designjunction also returns from 22 to 25 September as part of the London Design Festival. Relocating to a new long-term home in King’s Cross, Designjunction will take over the majority of the site with a specially curated programme of design exhibitions, installations, retail experience, events and workshops based on the leading theme of “Immersed in Design”. Another design resourcing show returning to Olympia London from 21 to 24 September is 100% Design. The 22nd edition of this exhibition will explore the theme of “Experience” – considering “the many ways in which design guides, frames and improves the ways that we live, work and consume”. Meanwhile, Design London will be a new showcase within Interiors, at the heart of 100% Design, consisting of a “carefully edited group of fewer than 15 brands (and spotlighting) the very best in design manufacturing, with each company chosen to complement one another”. www.londondesignfestival.com / www.thedesignjunction.co.uk www.100percentdesign.co.uk / www.designlondon.co.uk

A stunning architectural masterpiece located east of Marbella town centre, this villa has been passionately fashioned and designed in an adroit manner to blend contemporary and classic Mediterranean style. It features first-class finishes throughout, and delivers both functionality and a luxurious standard of domestic comfort. REAL CAPITAL SOLUTIONS
BRINGING SOPHISTICATED LIVING TO ATALAYA WITH THE LAUNCH OF ARBOLEDA VILLAS
Atalaya is a charming community that sits at the heart of the Costa del Sol on the boundary between Marbella and Estepona. It is an established residential area, walking distance to the beach and with an abundance of golf courses. The inherent affable ambience is present throughout all of the local bars and restaurants, and the leisure centre. The local private school, Colegio Atalaya, is renowned for high standards of international education. It is without doubt one of the most convenient locations on the Costa del Sol. And these much-anticipated new-build villas now provide a property choice that surpasses any current offering. Five different villa types have been designed that allow diversity in size, style and use, while uniting a stunning new development of 18 luxury villas. Cutting edge architecture has been blended with verdant landscaping to provide a build innovation that complements the natural surroundings. “Being part of a community whilst retaining individuality – this is what I envisioned for Arboleda,” says architect Francisco Robles. He also refers to Le Corbusier’s “magnificent play of masses brought together in light” in relation to the large glass façades that act as a central feature throughout all of the property designs. Arboleda is being developed by an American equity firm that does not accept average and prefers to push the boundaries of excellence. This can be seen in the exquisite selection of high-quality materials that have been chosen for the kitchens, flooring (seamless integration inside and out), worktops and swimming pool tiles. This combination of exhaustive care and delectable elegance results in homes that are a joy to inhabit. For more information: www.arboleda-villas.com

SIESTA INTERIOR DESIGN
BRIGHT MODERN STYLE WITH AN EXOTIC TOUCH Report by Cathelijne de Vilder
After the completion of a Moorish urbanisation with its original cosy features, we moved on to our next project. It was a much more contemporary urbanisation and therefore in need of a completely different look. We were looking for a fresh breath of air, lots of light, a cool Mediterranean look, definitely modern but not cold and certainly liveable. A luxurious feeling had to be created, and to that end we used Jan de Bouvrie’s design (a well-known Dutch designer) together with Tribu, one of our favourite high-end outdoor suppliers. It was initially designed as a show flat so we tweaked it to convert it into a home, adding some cosy cushions, bespoke wall art, personal pictures and wind lights. As the current owner wanted to keep the outdoor look and bring this same feeling to the interior, the entire colour scheme was left the same: white and grey to keep it modern, blue to keep it fresh, wood to keep it cosy, and green to make it feel a real home. We added furniture from all over the world to add an ethnic touch, sourced personally at the many furniture fairs we visit every year. You see this clearly in
the original blue cabinets and decoration pieces from India, Indonesia and Tunis. The bedroom was maintained calm but with high-quality linen and woollen plaids and cushions – both cool and warm to suit all year round visits. It blends beautifully with the rest of the décor, as the same colours and ethnic touches were added. It was transformed into an extremely relaxing, easygoing décor where all ages feel comfortable and at ease to move around – for now and for many years to come. A design which will remain interesting and will become even more stunning as the home is enjoyed by the owners. OPEN ROAD Such intrepid endeavours do not always have to be accompanied by discomfort, however. Bentley’s bespoke coach building division has created a highly-coveted installation, the Bentayga Fly Fishing by Mulliner, that not only houses all the equipment required for a successful day on the water but also gets you right to the riverbank in style. That is… in a vehicle that “combines genuine luxury with go-anywhere driving ability”. At the heart of the equipment are three individual, saddle-leather-trimmed units: a master tackle station, a refreshment case and waterproof wader-stowage trunk. The master tackle station and refreshment case sit on sliding tray with easy access; inside the master tackle unit is a special veneered drawer containing a fly-tying vice and tools, as well as a selection of cotton, hooks and feathers; and beneath this are four machined-fromsolid aluminium reel cases trimmed in saddle leather with linen cross-stitching. The interior of the refreshment case is trimmed in linen leather and contains up to three metal flasks and a set of Mulliner fine-china tableware, plus a separate food storage compartment; while waders and boots are conveniently stowed in a hand-crafted and saddleleather-wrapped wood trunk, lined with hard-wearing neoprene material to keep the items in a waterproof environment after use. Waterproof boot-floor and rear-sill-protection covers – and an electronic dehumidifier unit to ensure the area remains fresh and dry – are also discreetly integrated into the rear of the Bentayga Fly Fishing by Mulliner. As for the vehicle itself, the Bentayga is described as providing “a true Bentley experience, even in the most challenging environments, and takes luxury to new places, unrestrained by climate, terrain or conditions”. It offers a wide range of on- and off-road drive settings via Bentley’s drive dynamics mode and optional responsive off-road setting. Up to eight modes are available, allowing drivers to select the idea dynamic set-up for any surface or road condition. This versatility is complemented by Bentley Dynamic Ride (electrically activated 48V active roll control) and electric powerassisted steering (EPAS). As with all Bentleys, the Bentayga comes with multimode air suspension, and customers can also lower the rear suspension via a switch in the boot, to ease loading and trailer hitching. “The Bentayga Fly Fishing car showcases the breadth and level of detail a customer can expect from Mulliner,” says director Geoff Dowding, “This is an individual bespoke solution and our skilled craftspeople can design elegant and exquisitely executed bespoke solutions to complement any customer lifestyle or hobby. Fly fishing is a sport that requires a variety of equipment and clothing, so it was essential to package the rods, reels, waders, boots and fly-tying station into the car in a luxurious, accessible and elegant way – and the end result is truly extraordinary.”

Bono Beach has just undergone a major makeover. Now transformed into a fresh and even more inviting beach bar, it not only ensures a relaxing day by the sea but also offers an exciting range of culinary options, and has recently opened for dinner. Taken over by the experienced Metro Grupo, Bono is certainly in excellent hands and we could not wait to check it out. Some of the exceptional touches that make Bono Beach truly special, and definitely worth a visit, include convenient valet parking service and a gluten-free menu. The restaurant is almost always full for lunch and dinner, an ode to their deliciously varied food. Bono offers Japanese-Peruvian infused dishes such as ceviche, which comes with colourful sweet potato crisps and a fresh guacamole salad; Italianinspired cuisine; grilled meats; and Spanish tapas. Mexican-style dishes are also featured in the menu in the form of spicy nachos and a fajita salad. Youngsters are welcome at Bono Beach, and they can enjoy dishes from the children’s menu for €8. The creative desserts are also worth highlighting, with iced marshmallow, elderflower and peanut butter integrated into classical dishes. The staff are friendly as they eagerly recommend their favourite dishes on the menu. Salads start at €9, and main dishes at €18. Diners can enjoy a whole lobster for only €39, or the delicious red tuna tataki for €17. The portion sizes are satisfying and the food itself is immensely flavourful. On entering the establishment the first thing you notice is the décor, reminiscent of a Miami beach bar and providing an immediate relaxing effect. The customary summer crowds are happily forgotten in this secluded location – located on one of the Coast’s best beaches – allowing people of all ages to comfortably and stylishly make the most of the Spanish sunshine. Clients can recline in this chic setting for only €10 a sunbed, or enjoy a massage from €25. Bali-style beds are larger and start at €70 for the whole day, with space for up to four people. The option to upgrade to a “Super Bali” bed is available from €170. Both beds include at least two towels, a bottle of rosé and a fruit platter. Package deals are also available at reasonable prices. Booking in advance is recommended during the busy summer months. The venue is also open for events and weddings, while live music is played virtually daily – which adds to the idyllic seaside ambience. Bono Beach Urb. Costabella, Playa de Arenal, Marbella Tel. One of the most well established Argentinean restaurants on the Coast, Tango has undergone yet another stunning facelift. Its new look is fresh and contemporary, while still maintaining a cosy ambience. An interesting new feature is the addition of a champagne bar and VIP room on the upper floor – ideal for parties and events – where from Wednesday to Saturday a DJ adds to the upbeat atmosphere. On Wednesdays from 7 o’clock onwards they are also offering an after-work night, with live music, a tasting menu and special prices for drinks. Tango has always been a popular haunt with celebrities, thanks to its ritzy location in the heart of Puerto Banús, good quality food and buzzy vibe. The restaurant’s young and vibrant Argentinean owner, Luciano Dante, is committed to offering superlative quality meat at reasonable prices – which has been key to his many years of success.
Tango offers meat and fish cooked on the barbecue using natural charcoal and firewood to give it a truly authentic Argentinean barbecue taste, just one reason why clients come back time and time again. For non-carnivores, they also offer wonderful salads, homemade pastas and several vegetable dishes. Luciano takes his wine menu extremely seriously, and he has carefully selected some excellent wines that perfectly complement the dishes on the menu. Tango Restaurante Puerto Banús Tel. WINE NOTES
Excellent Selection FROM GRANADA’S HIGH SIERRAS By AJ Linn
The odd thing is that until a few years ago very few people, even living as near as we do on the Costa del Sol, knew red wines were being made in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Unsurprising possibly, when you consider that until the latter part of the last century there were practically no red wines made in the whole of Andalucía. 126

WINE NOTES
White wines a-plenty: sherry from Jerez and Montilla from Córdoba and Moriles, and of course the desperately sweet Málaga dessert wines that, at least on a personal level, have very little interest for serious tinto fans. Now we are awash with them, from Cádiz to Ronda, and to most northern zones of the province. Nor was it easy to get wine drinkers to understand that Andalucian red wines can be very good indeed and, while western Andalucía has been a late developer red wine-wise, little thought was given to the possibility of decent wines being made in the Granada region. Why? Because, in a phrase, there was no wine culture. Agreed, the Romans, who planted vines wherever the sun shone, and the Moors, who back then had few reservations about drinking wine, had all tried their hand, but the results were pretty basic. Nor were there any local families with winemaking experience, only farmers whose main crops were fruit and olives. How could Granada wines ever compete with the emerging red hopefuls from Jumilla and Alicante? I remember visiting one of the forerunners, Manuel Valenzuela, at his Barranco Oscuro bodega high up in the “Vino Costa” region. Born in nearby Guadix, he was a pioneer in every sense of the word. Despite being one of nine children, his parents insisted he finish his studies, and after a spell in France he ended up working for a company in Barcelona. This didn’t suit him at all and he resolved to go back to his region of birth, which is how he came to own a small plot in the Sierra Nevada, where he started off with one hectare under vines. ORGANIC AND NATURAL WINES Experimenting with a selection of grape varieties from all over Spain, he has eventually established an interesting range of organic and natural wines, currently rather over-priced for what they are, and in my opinion not as good as when he started making wine in the 1980s, though it has to be admitted he sells every one of the 20,000 bottles he produces each year. But Valenzuela is his own man, and it is not advisable to get into an argument with him. I remember in the early days of the bodega a lady from Germany arrived one morning in a large van she had driven across Europe to fill up with wine. While loading the cases she noticed that the obligatory back label certifying the wine to be organic was missing. When she pointed this out to our friendly winemaker, he presented her with a roll of labels and suggested she stick them on the bottles, as he did not have the time. The Muñana winery was also getting into its stride about the same time, although it was not until 2002 that it started marketing wines under the Muñana label, often shortened to just Ñ. In 2006 the bodega changed hands. The Julián Morillas family had been searching for a winery in which to make high quality wines that could be rated alongside Spain’s best. They final settled for this estate, irrigated by melted snow from the high peaks of the Sierra Nevada, and at over a thousand metres altitude the winters are pretty tough, with at some times of the year a difference of 20 degrees between day and night-time temperatures. One consequence of this is a better climate for maturing wines that reduces acidity. Since then the vineyards have grown in size, irrigation systems have been installed, and the winery has been refurbished and extended. Of the 200-hectare estate, 40 hectares are under vines, using Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Petit Verdot, Monastrell and Merlot grape varieties, giving a production of 200,000 bottles annually. There is an excellent rosado (Delirio €7.25), a better-than-average Petit Verdot (€14.15), the good-value Ñ Rojo (2011 at €9.70), the 3 Cepas Crianza (2009 at €15), the Ñ Syrah (2009 at €20) and an admirable Cabernet Sauvignon (2009 at €14). Altogether a notable selection, and as perfect an introduction to Granada wines as you can get. The labels are fun too, and quite out of the ordinary. www.bodegasmunana.com

Stimulating the Brain … AND KILLING CANCER CELLS Medical Minutes by John Schieszer
CINNAMON MAY BOOST BRAIN POWER Studies have suggested that adding cinnamon to your food on a regular basis may help improve blood glucose levels in adults with pre-diabetes or diabetes. Now, it turns out that cinnamon may also be good for the brain. American researchers at Rush University have found that cinnamon could have the potential to turn poor learners into good ones. They have found that different compounds within cinnamon, including cinnamaldehyde, which gives the spice its distinctive flavour and aroma, are metabolised into sodium benzoate in the liver. The researchers report that sodium benzoate then becomes the active compound, which readily enters the brain and stimulates hippocampal plasticity. The researchers first tested mice in mazes to separate the good and poor learners. Good learners made fewer wrong turns and took less time to find food. In analysing baseline disparities between the good and poor learners, they found differences in two brain proteins. The gap was all but erased when cinnamon was given. Cinnamon, like many spices, has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. So it could be expected to exert a range of health-boosting actions, and it does have a centuries-long history of medicinal use around the world. However, the U.S. National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says that “highquality clinical evidence to support the use of cinnamon for any medical condition is generally lacking”. In Spain, it is possible to obtain plenty of excellentquality cinnamon. Most of the clinical trials that have taken place have focused on the spice’s possible effect on blood sugar for people with diabetes. Little if any clinical research has been done on the spice’s possible brain-boosting properties. “Besides general memory improvement, cinnamon may target Alzheimer’s disease, mild cognitive impairment, and Parkinson’s disease as well,” said study investigator Dr. Kalipada Pahan, who is a researcher at Rush University and the Jesse Brown Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Chicago (Illinois). Before you start heaping cinnamon on your oatmeal, keep a few caveats in mind. Most cinnamon found in the store is the Chinese variety, which contains a compound called coumarin that may be toxic to the liver in high amounts. A person would likely have to eat huge amounts of cinnamon to run into a problem, but just the same Dr. Pahan recommends the Ceylon or Sri Lanka type, which is coumarin-free. “Even then, don’t overdo it. Anything in excess is toxic,” said Dr. Pahan. NANOPARTICLES AND LASERS THAT ZAP CANCER Researchers at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark are reporting that they have developed a method that kills cancer cells using nanoparticles and lasers. Traditional cancer treatments, such as radiation and chemotherapy, have significant side effects because they not only affect the cancer but also the healthy parts of the body. This approach avoids all that. “The treatment involves injecting tiny nanoparticles directly into the cancer. Then you heat up the nanoparticles from outside using lasers. It is a strong interaction between the nanoparticles and the laser light, which causes the particles to heat up. What then happens is that the heated particles damage or kill the
cancer cells,” said Professor Lene Oddershede, who is a biophysicist at the Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen. The small nanoparticles are between 80 and 150 nanometres in diameter (a nanometre is a millionth of a millimetre). The experiments showed that the researchers achieved the best results with nanoparticles that were 150 nanometres in size and consisted of a core of glass coated with gold. The nanoparticles were illuminated with near-infrared laser light, which is the best at penetrating through the tissue. In contrast to conventional radiation therapy, the near-infrared laser light causes no burn damage to the tissue that it passes through. Just an hour after the treatment, they could already directly see with PET scans that the cancer cells had been killed and the effect continued for at least two days after the treatment in animal models. “In the longer term, we would like the method to work by injecting the nanoparticles into the bloodstream, where they end up in the tumours that may have metastasised. With the PET scans we can see where the tumours are and irradiate them with lasers, while also effectively assessing how well the treatment has worked shortly after the irradiation,” said Oddershede.

HEALTH & BEAUTY
To Be Virgin Or Not THAT IS THE QUESTION!
The Mediterranean diet is purported to be responsible for a longer life, and lower risk of heart disease, stroke and cancer – and the single most contributory factor in the Mediterranean diet is thought to be extra virgin olive oil. Olive oil is of course a fat but, as we know, not all fats are bad. Olive oil is predominantly high in healthy monounsaturated fat, vitamins E and K, and the important omega 6 and 3 fatty acids, making it a friend rather than a foe. Extra virgin olive oil (unprocessed) compared with regular or virgin olive oil has, until now, been considered the best for our health. This is because unprocessed olive oil contains many more beneficial chemicals such as polyphenols. These have an antioxidant effect, helping to fight inflammation – the cause of many diseases. However, few studies have provided a direct comparison of the benefits of extra virgin olive oil and regular olive oil. And, as we know, extra virgin olive oil can be very expensive! Researchers at the Universities of Glasgow, Lisbon and Germany decided to do just that. In this very sophisticated study they looked at actual markers of heart health (as opposed to other studies looking at risk factors such as cholesterol). Sixty-nine healthy participants, previously unfamiliar with olive oil in their diet, were split into two groups and asked to take 20 millilitres of olive oil – regular (low in polyphenols) or extra virgin (high in polyphenols) every day over a six-week period. Interestingly, both high and low groups saw a big improvement in proteins associated with heart disease. Dr Emilie Combet and Dr Bill Mullen concluded that, regardless of the polyphenolic content of the oil, there was a positive effect on heart health. Any olive oil – regular, virgin or extra virgin – seems to be beneficial. They surmised that the fatty acids are probably the main contributors to heart health and not the polyphenol content. Now I’m not a nutritionist but I do love good science. Of course fat is high in calories so it is best to substitute other fats with olive oil rather than add it to your diet. And personally I like the taste of extra virgin olive oil more than regular olive oil so I choose to put that on my toast or bread rather than butter or margarine. Two tablespoons a day is thought to give maximum benefits and who can argue with that when it is so delicious. Rachel Garrod PhD MSc is a physiotherapy lecturer and stop smoking counsellor Tel. Photo © Lambert GmbH Photo © Sandberg, available from Tapeten und Uhren Aware that many of us are often keen to change our home environment – whether it is a major transformation or some judicious tweaking – journalist Claire Bingham decided to put together a new book offering some decorating tips and tricks behind inspiring modern interiors. The result is Modern Living – How to Decorate with Style, which “shows us what to think about when decorating a room and how to transform a dull space into something fantastic that we love”. Bingham now writes on design and style for various international titles (including Vogue Living) after beginning her career in interiors, working for Pimlico Road antiques dealer Christopher Howe. “As an interiors journalist I’ve spent a lot of time looking round other people’s homes, seeing a whole lot of different styles and finding out from the homeowners what makes them tick,” she says. “In this book, I wanted to write about some of the style lessons I’ve picked up along the way. I’m often asked for help with decorating dilemmas, so room-by-room the book goes through big-picture advice on what to think about when planning a scheme from scratch to smaller style hacks to creating a look that you love.” Some of the top tips include tricks to disguise a televi- s i o n in the lounge to clever space-saving ideas in the bathroom. “We also give our favourite decorating rules to break. One of my constant loves is to paint a room all the same shade, from the skirting boards, to architraves and doors. Who needs a horizontal white stripe running around the base of a room? The effect blurs the boundaries, making ceilings seem taller and spaces opened out.” Modern Living – How to Decorate with Style was published this summer (€39.90) by www.teneues.com. Marbella Charity Gala Supports World Vision Puente Romano Beach Resort & Spa’s Sea Grill restaurant was the stunning setting for the fourth edition of the annual World Vision Gala Dinner. Guests enjoyed direct views to the Mediterranean from their poolside tables, as well as a non-stop extravaganza of entertainment, live music, international gastronomy and raffle prizes. Puente Romano owner Daniel Shamoon specifically chose the World Vision charity for the event – “the world’s largest international children’s charity, working to bring real hope to millions of children in the world’s hardest places”. According to Shamoon, the aim was to create an unforgettable experience for the guests while helping a worthwhile charity. “Every year through the gala we help fund a different project, of which we can actually see the results first hand. This year’s project is to tackle malaria and provide thousands of families and children in Myanmar (Burma) with a safer, healthier future.” www.puenteromano.com

RESIDENCIAS LUJOSAS VITALUX
Doris Kavcic of VITALUX – The secret to her success! While recently walking through the city of Marbella, Doris Kavcic, owner of Residencias Lujosas Vitalux, asked herself, “Crisis? What crisis?” She notes that times have changed in Marbella and the real estate industry has gone through a difficult period, “but the streets are bustling with people, the restaurants and shops are as crowded as ever and the demand for properties has experienced immense growth”. Vitalux opened eight years ago and, according to Doris, “The timing of the company’s launch in early 2009 was a deliberately daring one during an extremely difficult year. However, success has won-out. We had a well thought-out concept plus the feeling for the right moment and now the company is celebrating its eighth anniversary and, at the same time, 18 years of sector affiliation.” Residencias Lujosas Vitalux, S.L. Construction continues to grow on the Costa del Sol, but something has changed, says Bass Houses. “It is no longer possible to avoid responsibility for the environment.” This is the starting point of Bass Houses. “The Bass signature identity is based on combining natural materials and typical elements of Mediterranean architecture with a rationalist style of pure lines, incorporating the latest advances in construction technology and home automation.” The Bass team is full aware that modernity, comfort and efficiency are the key elements required to satisfy the demands of people who need health and wellness in their own homes. Bass also recognises that there can’t be sustainability without social commitment, and to that end the company collaborates with the University of Málaga and one of the leading academics in the field of domotic (home automation) programming, in order to develop bioclimatic homes for all people. “At Bass we understand ecological construction as a necessary tool for change.“ Marbella Club Hotel, Ofic. 12, Bulevar Príncipe de Hohenlohe, Marbella Tel. CULTURAL AGENDA
Exhibitions and Lectures on the Costa del Sol MUSEO PICASSO MÁLAGA
Continuing until 11 September, the “Eye Games” exhibition looks at the representation of the gaze in Pablo Picasso’s work. “This representation is in turn directly influenced by the gaze that the artist himself directed towards his subject in each work, and it enables us to follow Picasso’s technical and stylistic development. Thanks to the gazes present in the 43 works from the MPM’s Collection that make up this exhibition, we can appreciate how rich this theme is throughout Picasso’s body of work.” www.mpicassom.org DECORATIVE AND FINE ARTS SOCIETY • COSTA DEL SOL DFAS The lecture “Hemingway and Spain” will be held on 10 October at Salon Varietes in Fuengirola (4.30 pm – €10 for visitors). Specialist Advice
Goodbye to the Apostille IN THE EUROPEAN UNION?
Article supplied by Spanish legal and fiscal advisors Arcos & Lamers
It is well known how difficult it sometimes is for a document issued by an authority in one country to have legal effect in another country. Now it seems as though the European Union will be making things easier (although some may not wish to take part… Brexit Dixit) through the adoption of a regulation that would simplify certain procedures to authenticate official documents. Currently, citizens of the European Union must obtain a stamp to prove that their public documents are authentic in another EU country. Under the new regulation, there would be a reduction in bureaucratic procedures linked to public documents accepted by another EU country, without the need for them to be stamped (or legalised by the consulates or diplomatic offices). The regulation would also abolish the obligation to provide a certified copy or a certified translation of public documents, as multilingual standard forms will be used and made available in all EU languages. The regulation covers public documents in the following areas: - Births - Confirmation person is alive
146
- Deaths - Identity certificates - Certain marriage certificates - Certificates of divorce, legal separation or marriage annulment - Registered partnership (registration and dissolution) - Parenthood / adoption - Nationality, domicile, residence - Absence of criminal records - Right to vote and stand as a candidate Member states have two year and a half years from the date of entry into force of the regulation to adopt all necessary measures in their internal legal systems.
