FROM THE

EDITOR Photographer David Toms has been a highly valued and respected colleague at Home & Lifestyle Magazine for many years. Above all else, however, he is a cherished friend… sanguine, placid, hugely gifted professionally and with a deep sense of compassion that warms the hearts of people who come into contact with him. When we heard the news of his motorcycle accident we were – like so many other people – utterly dismayed. Now David is in a Toledo specialist hospital undergoing

a

comprehensive

rehabilitation

programme. When he eventually concludes his treatment there he will almost certainly need ongoing support and convalescence. To that end, a fund has been set up to meet some of his needs, including a specially adapted home. More details are in the News section on P.140. With these troubling thoughts on our minds, it has been difficult to contemplate other notably less important matters such as a refurbishment of the home for autumn – or adding a warm touch to the living areas for winter. However, David – with his positive and practical outlook on life – would truly be the first to say that work must go on. So to this issue… Our customary features on pacesetting décor and design trends include an overview of latest dining room styles and we also have an expanded gourmet section (both especially timely with the festive season coming up) that highlights top local restaurants as well as culinary initiatives and presentations from around Spain. On 4 and 5 November we will be attending the first edition of Home Fair Costa del Sol as a media partner. To be held at the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos convention centre in Estepona, the exhibition is mainly aimed at Dutch and Belgian nationals – but all people are warmly welcome to attend. We hope to see you there!

STYLISH LIVING ROOMS

LOUNGE LOVING During the winter months the living room takes greater precedence so why not give it a lift with some new accessories, chairs or a lick of paint? Avoid cluttering your living room with unnecessary items and just place items that work with the room. This will make its overall look more welcoming aesthetically – and help you relax.

he beauty of wallpapers is that they can transform a room with very little effort and can be changed whenever you like. You can go for a statement design that will give the wow-factor or simply choose something that adds a general tone to the room. We have seen many of the big brands bringing out metallic collections in recent years as well as a multitude of different textured wallpapers that give that “touchable” feel. OPPOSITE PAGE The new “Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains” design by De Gournay combines religion, history and mythology from Chinese murals and scrolls. The collection brings old traditions into the contemporary home. De Gournay is available from UDesign in San Pedro de Alcántara (www.udesign.es). FIRST PERSON

CREATING EXCEPTIONAL AMBIENCES INTERVIEW WITH ELENA FERNÁNDEZ ORTEGA FROM DIRECO LIGHTING

In your opinion, how important is lighting in the home? The home is where people spend much of their time – it’s their refuge – so it is vital to create an appropriate climate of comfort that allows them to enjoy their everyday lives to the fullest. One of the key elements in creating this comfortable ambience is, without a doubt, lighting. Well-planned and properly incorporated lighting provides the feeling of comfort that is so necessary in carrying out our daily tasks and activities. Several aspects depend on lighting: the feeling generated by a warm, relaxing atmosphere; and the actual size, with the opportunity of transforming a small room into a more airy and spacious area, or a large bedroom into a pleasant and intimate haven. Lighting helps enhance and strengthen colours and the ambience, so using lighting techniques properly can significantly change the final result in each part of the home. In the case of incorrect lighting, you can ruin an attractive décor. And, if you want to achieve an effective and tidy appearance, you need to take great care when choosing the objects that are being lit. The specific needs for each ambience require different lighting arrangements

40

and configurations, in order to define the distinctive lighting “types” and “systems” that will be used. When planning lighting projects, three basic premises need to be adhered to: What to light. How to light it. What elements to use. General lighting: this type refers to the main lighting that illuminates the whole area, and which facilitates basic activities in the absence of natural light. It is always located at the highest point and creates uniform lighting that is free from shadows. Specific lighting: this complements the general lighting, and is used to illuminate a special area, where a specific activity is carried out such as, for example, a reading corner or a kitchen table. It is also known as focal lighting. Ambient lighting: generally this is used to set a mood, and is accompanied by both artificial and natural light. It lights up dark areas and creates an atmosphere. In this case the design of the lamp and the colour and intensity of the light emitted are important – the latter shouldn’t be excessive.

First Person Direco HL48.indd 40

28/10/16 16:40

Decorative lighting: this kind of lighting is used to create or highlight a specific part of the room, a painting or the building’s architecture. These are the basic issues to be taken into account when undertaking a lighting study, be it for a home or any other leisure space (restaurant, bar, etc.), work office, hotel… What exclusive brands do you offer? TAL for technical lighting; Studio Italia Design, Foscarini, Flos, Marset, Vibia, Contardi, PuraLuce, Pallucco, Terzani, Viso, Catellani & Smith, Metalarte, B.lux and Arturo Alvarez for decorative lighting; Lithoss, an embedded series of lighting; Systemline, a multi-room audio distribution system; Thinkx, a server for viewing with Knx, Crestrom, Modbus, TCP/IP… etc. What services are offered by Direco, and why should potential clients visit your showroom? We offer expert knowledge, technology, creativity and design to secure our clients’ satisfaction. We make sure we stay abreast of latest trends in lighting and home automation, and have a team of qualified professionals with many years

of experience in the industry, able to offer personalised service and confidence. We have a fast and flexible delivery service for the most demanding clients. Our showroom displays our lighting products, top luxury brand switches and multiroom audio complemented by the many options available through the Knx domotic (home automation) system, thus enabling clients to combine all their home technology. What do you enjoy most about your work? The satisfaction and motivation of completing a well-developed lighting project, and seeing that our clients are satisfied with the work we have done, and feel we have fulfilled their expectations. It’s a very creative and enriching job, but at the same time it brings with it great responsibility. The quest for perfection is constant. Direco Lighting C/ Uranio 29, Pol. Ind. LUXURIOUS FABRICS

WARMING THINGS UP FROM THE INSIDE OUT

JACQUELINE ROBERTS TAKES A LOOK AT THE SEASON’S MAIN DÉCOR TRENDS

COLOUR When it comes to revamping your interior spaces this winter, you should be starting with your colour palette. This season’s “neutral” is dominated by shades of grey: think winter mornings – silvery branches, frosty panes and wispy smoke, hues of slate, charcoal and stone. These shades provide the perfect neutral base for darker, richer colours to make their mark – midnight blues and indigo, deep purples and jewel pinks to bring a bit of opulent ambience to a room. Alternatively, chalky whites, lighter blues, soft beiges and wood finishes will combine to brighten and lighten spaces. The Pantone Colour institute has also included a vibrant red, a spicy mustard yellow and the “Bodacious” pinkish purple in its autumn colour palette. TEXTURE Once you’ve decided on colour, it’s time to think about adding texture and pattern. Shaggy rugs, soft cashmere or wool throws, quilts and scatter cushions offer a practical yet stylish addition. Throws folded over sofas or rolled in a traditional basket give a room a visual feeling of warmth. Stools, poufs and beanbags made from faux fur or luxurious velvets provide fun yet décor-savvy additional seating, and wallpapers this season are also doing a lot to bring texture into a room with the use of cork and other organic elements.

88

PATTERN This season it’s all about fabulous florals with huge granny-style blossoms filling both the fashion runways and the fashionistas’ homes. We’re also seeing the softer tones of greys, brighter mustards and textured fabrics that add subtle hints to a room. In addition, the floral epidemic has spread to wallpapers with some wonderful prints out there to spice up a room. SHINE Another way to brighten up a wintery room is to use accents with metallic surfaces. A feature wall with a metallic look wallpaper… or embellish with highshine vases, photo frames, mirrors and lighting. Glass is a valuable addition to tie in a room finished with metallic accessories, while accentuating any natural light. WARMTH Keeping warm in the depths of a Spanish winter can be no mean feat, especially if, like me, you live in an old house with no centralised heating system! If you’re lucky enough to be totally remodelling or buying a new property, then underfloor heating is definitely the way forward. If not, open fires add a special ambience to a room and provide a focal point. With some logs piled at the side

NOVEMBER DECEMBER 6

Tela Bella Editorial HL48.indd 88

and a gorgeous rug in front, nothing says “winter” more. When not in use, fill your fireplace with candles – choose different styles and lengths to maintain the focal point. If you really can’t bear the thought of staying indoors on chilly winter nights, think about a fire pit for the terrace. Snuggled up under a soft fluffy blanket in front of flickering flames, sipping hot chocolate under a starfilled sky… and winter’s suddenly not so bad after all. Tela Bella Avda. Villeroy & Boch’s new Soup Passion collection is a novel and practical way to serve soup. The bowl is placed on a separate oblong plate where you can rest your spoon and lay bread. On top of the soup bowl there is a removable partitioned dish that serves as a lid to cover your soup while you are carrying it – and keep it warm. The partitions in the lid allow you to store garnishes for the soup and there is a groove in the soup bowl to rest chopsticks. Villeroy & Boch is available from Puya in Pol. Ind. THE PHILOSOPHY OF SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

By Ali a Bab

The coming of autumn always brings to mind warmth from fireplaces and staying inside from the cold (or wet – or both) and yet it is also a time of renewing the world. Our flowers are more or less done in giving us their beauty, the growth of plants slows, and animals try to get as much harvested for the inclement months so they can survive. We humans do something akin to this as well. Out of our wardrobes come the “winter woollies” and we prepare ourselves for Halloween and various rituals and festivities culminating in Christmas and the New Year. Colours change as well. They become muted and softer as if we are going into some kind of hibernation with vividness. Warm coppers, browns, greys and black seem to come into their own, but why should they. Surely in these bleak months we should look for bright splashes of colour to cheer us up. However, that’s not really what I am writing about this issue. I wanted to explain what this column is all about. So here we go… Sustainable design is “the philosophy of designing physical objects, the built environment, and services to comply with the principles of social, economic, and ecological sustainability” (Wikipedia). The intention of sustainable design is to make sure there are no negative impacts on the environment, by using skilfully

96

thought out, sensitive design. This means using renewable resources, impacting minimally on the environment, and connecting people with the natural environment which surrounds us. Eco-friendly literally means earth-friendly or not harmful to the environment. This usually means products which contribute to green living or practices that help conserve resources such as water and energy. Eco-friendly products also lessen contributions to air, water and land pollution. A renewable resource is any natural resource, such as wood or solar energy, that can be replenished naturally with the passage of time. It can be used, but it can be replaced over time. This is particularly so for materials like timbers. For example, timbers such as pine and Australian hardwoods are replanted in monitored forests, whereas timber from rainforests is not replanted and lost forever. More and more companies are turning their design eye to using what wonders we have on this planet and coming up with some spectacular ideas. From the great idea of a wine shop using bottles as its lighting system to the people who use old planks for their bathroom… both these ideas have taken eco-friendly to a very high level and, in doing so, have created something quite unique.

Our clientele is quite varied, from families wanting to renovate the windows of their apartment to clients with very high spending power who are seeking the best market options to enclose their homes. We are also specialists in resolving such problems as dampness and excessive noise in homes. How do you update your products and services? We have very close contacts with leading manufacturers in Europe, which enables us to be well informed about all latest innovations and options in the market, and be in a position to offer the most effective solutions to our clients.

House of Games - Bonbons by Luca Nichetto, Verreum

REINVIGORATING CREATIVITY IN PARIS Maison & Objet’s theme for the September show in Paris, House of Games, was designed to focus on a world of full of signs, shapes, colours and tales, “to reinitiate the creative mind”. Noting that playfulness is fed by the aesthetics of board games, games of chance and games of balance – chessboards, pawns, playing cards, dice, dominos, tarot, etc. – Marie-Jo Malait, editor-in-chief of the Inspirations Book, said, “Anything is reason to have fun.” And the rules of this game? “To bring drama to décor, to bet on joyous and elegant maximalism, to play the card of Strange Beauty. In the luxury of this new decorative art, the colour red trumps all others. Sensuous materials and precious know-how are a winning bet. Games play with rules, times, styles and genres. Dada collages and the juxtaposition of heteroclite elements shuffle the cards of unexpectedness.” Another highlight of this year’s exhibition was Le Fil Vert, an annual event during which Maison & Objet presents its Green Itinerary awards to spotlight exhibiting brands and companies that have developed an eco-friendly approach to design. In 2016, the jury honoured 12 companies with activities in upcycling, waste reduction, local production processes and social initiatives. Every year, Maison & Objet also spotlights “the most outstanding names on the international design and decor scene today”, and the designer honoured at the September show was Britain’s Ilse Crawford, who started her career as a journalist and was the founding editor-in-chief of Elle Decoration UK. After over a decade in magazines, “with a mission to put human needs and desires back at the centre of design”, she founded her multi-disciplinary practice Studioilse in 2001.

DESIGN INNOVATION IN LONDON With a programme this year of 563 projects and events, the London Design Festival consolidated its status as one of the most influential industry events in the world. The 2016 theme was “Design is in the Detail”, and more than 2,000 international businesses exhibited at the five “Design Destinations”: 100% Design, Decorex International, designjunction, Focus/16 and London Design Fair. The inaugural London Design Biennale, in partnership with Jaguar and Somerset House, included installations, artworks, prototypes and designs from 37 countries and territories – “an entertaining and inspiring exploration of the role of design in our collective futures”. Visitors were able to interact with new work by leading architects, designers, scientists, writers and artists in a broad exhibition that included large-scale kinetic sculpture, immersive digital installations, culinary pop ups, performances and VR renderings of the future. “Underlying much of the Biennale,” said the organisers, “are a number of pressing,

universal issues that designers around the world are seeking to address, among them sustainability, migration and conflict, pollution, technological innovation, water scarcity and social equality.” The seven “Design Districts including a newcomer, the Brixton Design Trail, “a series of events that use the power of design to amplify identity and create a sense of place”. Under the theme of Rebel Rebel, the Trail paid homage to “the enduring influence of one of the world’s design icons, David Bowie, a Brixton local who redefined the boundaries of creativity and identity”. Leading designers, artists and architects at the festival also lent their support to Who’s Casper?, a collaboration between designjunction2016 and British furniture company Modus to raise funds for refugees. Proceeds from the project benefit the charity Movement on the Ground, “which supports refugees at the forefront of the European crisis. Affecting the men, women and children forced from their homes by climate change, poverty and war.”

MODERN FAMILY HOME WITH A COSY FEEL

104

NOVEMBER DECEMBER 6

Design Showcase HL48.indd 104

28/10/16 19:17

Christina White had worked on her first project with the same client 12 years ago but on this occasion the commission was for something totally different – less traditional. “This time they wanted to change to a more modern style,” recalls Christina, “but it still had to be cosy and feel like a home, as the client is very family oriented.” This was a challenge for The White House team, “because modern can very easily look cold”, but they were more than equal to the task. The house was quite white, so they decided to “warm it up” with touches of gold, natural wood, sisal, wicker, hemp, plants and wallpapers made out of waterlily, shells and stones. The colours are extremely natural – with sand, stone and plenty of textures – and the fireplace is covered with flexible stone. “It is one thing to have an idea of how you want to do everything,” says Christina, “but without talented people helping you realise these ideas you are nothing. I am lucky to have a wonderful young assistant, Lovisa Johansson, who has helped a lot to fulfil what I envisaged.”

The White House used several brands for different areas of the home. Belgian company Sempre supplied a big chunky dining table, as well as the huge baskets, crystal vases and a bucket chair – all found by Christina at the Maison & Objet exhibition in Paris. The funky little mushroom-shaped side tables in the living room and crystal consol table in the hallway came from Cattelan Italia; Elite to Be provided the metal coffee table in front of the fireplace and Catellani & Smith the golden lamp on the stairwell; the wallpapers are from Omexco; and much of the furniture was made by “my wonderful carpenter Paco”. The fabrics came from various sources, including Dedar, Wind, Güell/Les Creations, James Malone and Colefax and Fowler. The White House Urb. Marbella Real, Local 19, Marbella Tel. Real Capital Solutions launched its outstanding Arboleda villas project this autumn. The residential development is located in Atalaya, a charming community in the heart of the Costa del Sol on the boundary between Marbella and Estepona. This well-established residential area is within walking distance of the beach, is close to several top golf courses, and provides an inherently affable ambience at its local bars, restaurants and leisure centre. The local private school, Colegio Atalaya, is also renowned for high standards of international education. In short, undoubtedly one of the most convenient locations on the Coast. According to Real Capital Solutions, these eagerly anticipated new-build villas “provide a property choice that surpasses any current offering”. Five different villa types have been designed, “to allow a diversity in size, style and use whilst uniting a stunning new development of 18 luxury villas. Cutting edge architecture has been blended with verdant landscaping to provide a build innovation that complements the natural surroundings.” As architect Francisco Robles observes, “Being part of a community whilst retaining individuality – this is what I envisioned for Arboleda.” He also refers to Le Corbusier’s “magnificent play of masses brought together in light” in relation to the large glass façades that act as a central feature throughout all of the property designs. Arboleda is being developed by an American equity firm that “does not accept average and prefers to push the boundaries of excellence”. This is evident in the selection of high-quality materials chosen for the kitchens, flooring (seamless integration inside and out), worktops and swimming pool tiles. “This combination of exhaustive care and delectable elegance results in homes that are a joy to inhabit.” www.arboleda-villas.com

In line with this ongoing objective of developing a “reputation for discernment and dynamism”, the British luxury brand has forged various partnerships over the past century to create a diverse selection of exclusive luxury products – now brought together in an “Art of Living” curated collection of Aston Martin artisan products and bespoke experiences. According to Aston Martin executive vice president and chief creative officer Marek Reichman, “Aston Martin’s Art of Living distils our spirit and ethos. It is a beautiful mix of design, technology and style to enhance your life. It is deep in our culture; it is in everything we create for our customers.” Featuring cutting-edge technology, iconic design and exceptional craftsmanship, the collection offers “behind-the-scenes access at some of the world’s best events; it is a unique pair of sunglasses, a beautiful watch or an exquisite silk scarf. It is a way of life that captures the very essence of the Aston Martin brand.” One example of Art of Living in practice is the AM37, a 37-foot powerboat created as “the ultimate in maritime refinement” in partnership with Quintessence Yachts. The new boat is described as showcasing the Aston Martin design philosophy, “where luxury meets technical excellence to create a powerful yet understated product”. This year Marma London also launched an innovative new range of Aston Martin eyewear, with detailing inspired by the lines of Aston Martin Racing cars. As managing director of AM Brands Katia Bassi notes: “The Art of Living portfolio of products (is) delivered with the same care and quality that would be expected of a bespoke Aston Martin sports car. This programme provides us with the opportunity to engage with our customers on a new level. We want them to share in the Aston Martin lifestyle.”

Last month Home & Lifestyle Magazine collaborated with the modelling agency Scouting Division on a fashion photo shoot at The Peninsula Paris hotel. Appropriately, for this special presentation, the Peninsula name is synonymous with romance, glamour and style. It is housed in an exquisitely restored 19th century French building that first opened in 1908 as one of Paris’s leading “grands hotels.” After being dormant for two decades, this architectural gem on Avenue Kléber was meticulously restored and reopened as The Peninsula Paris in the heart of the French capital – within walking distance of leading museums, luxury shopping districts and fine dining establishments. In the evening, the rooftop L’Oiseau Blanc restaurant terrace provides 360-degree views of the French capital’s iconic monuments, including the Eiffel Tower. The Peninsula Paris’s rooms and suites feature an accent on classic modernity which, according to the hotel, “adheres to the design tenets of simplicity and chic elegance… showcasing the finest materials and craftsmanship”. The hotel’s eclectic array of restaurant and dining options adds a new culinary dimension to the City of Light. Open daily, six establishments offer the best of French and international cuisine: Le Lobby, LiLi Cantonese, La Terrasse Kléber, Le Bar Kléber, Le Lounge Kléber and the aforementioned L’Oiseau Blanc. The Peninsula Paris is also home to a luxuriously appointed, 1,800 square metre spa and wellness area, allowing guests to refresh and revitalise body and mind, in a streamlined design ambience dotted with plant and mineral notes and exuding a sensation of refinement and luxury. EXCEPTIONAL DINING IN NATURAL TRANQUILITY AT EL CAMPANARIO GOLF & COUNTRY HOUSE Photos by: Johnny Gates

28/10/16 19:27

Tucked behind the Diana and Atenea commercial centres just west of Benahavís is the charming El Campanario Golf & Country House. This special venue is set in a tranquil setting surrounded by natural vegetation. There is a nine-hole golf course which has had a “foot golf” course built into it, as well as a spa, indoor and outdoor swimming pool and gym – and a wonderful restaurant spearheaded by talented their chef. Home & Lifestyle Magazine was lucky enough to be invited to try out some of their specialities and, of course, we thought it would be nothing but rude to turn the invitation down… On arrival we are greeted by the charismatic maître d’. He tells us how he has worked there for four years and thoroughly enjoys his work – this we could tell! He seemed quite a favourite with the clients and had a good rapport with his colleagues, who also all seemed to be eminently happy in their work. The El Campanario restaurant is truly the ideal venue for any kind of diner or group, whether you are a romantic couple, family or party of friends. The decoration is elegant with its white tablecloths and sophisticated touches but it is also homely and welcoming with numerous tropical references. There are paintings of zebras and Balinese inhabitants, as well as zigzag printed upholstery to give an Amazonian feel. The overall design embraces its natural surroundings with plenty of natural wood, grassy chandeliers over the peripheral tables, and oversized windows to allow you to fully enjoy the natural beauty outside. There is a bar and lounge area with a fireplace where you can enjoy pre and after dinner drinks in a cosy environment. There is also a beautiful patio area for al fresco dining that looks out over the garden and outdoor pool, with a chill-out area to the right. If there is a nip in the air, there are heaters on hand so you can still enjoy the outdoors in comfort. We were treated to a heavenly crab crème brûlée with king prawns and avocado as well as a perfectly flaky pie which was filled with unctuous mushrooms and placed upon thin slices of flavoursome duck. We were then brought a grilled fillet of beef served with serrano ham and cheese croquettes and a muscatel sauce, plus a sea bass fillet with a gratin and rocket sauce served in a cockle and stir-fried cassava sauce. To finish the gastronomic extravaganza, we dived into a plum and apple crumble with a red wine berry coulis. The chef really does show off his talents with his menu, as everything was cooked to absolute perfection and all the dishes were extremely well thought-out. From Tuesday to Saturday there is a lunch menu where you can enjoy two courses plus a glass of wine, beer or soft drink for just €17.95 per person. The restaurant is open Wednesday to Saturday for dinner. On Thursday nights there is live music and on Fridays and Saturdays they have a Spanish flamenco guitarist. For Sunday lunch, El Campanario has an outstanding offer where you can choose three courses for just €16.50. Classic Grill Delicacies WITH A TOUCH OF PIZZAZZ

Journalists tend to be a difficult lot to please. Most normal people invited to a luncheon presentation at a popular restaurant would be joyously salivating all morning and dancing a small jig of delight as they scampered through the establishment’s front door. Journalists – especially those who have managed to entrench themselves as their media’s gastronomy correspondent – are considerably more blasé about these things. There are, however, exceptions. One such was the invitation Home & Lifestyle received to a press lunch at Rancho Grill. The gnashing of teeth and livid looks that accompanied our self-designated head foodie as he hurtled out the office door show just how prized this particular restaurant invitation was, to the extent that someone audaciously suggested a staff raffle be held on this occasion to determine the privileged invitee. The ploy failed dismally, thwarted by the aforementioned correspondent’s rather intimidating and certainly undignified tantrum. But we digress… Rancho Grill’s reputation as a haven of gourmet excellence is well-founded. Owned and run by Belgian husband and wife Ghislain and Vera, whose abiding passion for food and wine is eminently palpable, the restaurant – located on the eastern outskirts of Marbella municipality – ticks all the culinary boxes: enchanting ambience, excellent service, convenient private parking, exquisite cuisine and an (arguably) incomparable selection of Spanish and French wines.

116

Considering the establishment’s name, it would be easy to perceive it as a steakhouse or “mere” grill restaurant. As Vera stresses, however, it is so much more. Meat is indisputably its star speciality – from chateaubriand to oven-baked roast of lamb – but the extensive, high-end menu truly caters for all tastes. A group of 10 diners could quite easily each savour a distinctive dish, created to accommodate their diverse array of preferences by a multi-national kitchen team. The chef’s recommendations for starters, for example, include steamed green asparagus with marinated pumpkin and quail eggs, and scallops sautéed with mushrooms and potato puree, while other favourites are salmon sashimi with ginger, soya sauce and wasabi emulsion, and beef carpaccio with rocket salad and parmesan – complemented by several different salads. For the mains, tender pork loin with tarragon-flavoured pear, a Surf & Turf combination of beef fillet and king prawns, magret of duck, chicken tikka marsala, two textures of cod, and a hot pot of rabbit cooked using a recipe lovingly preserved from Vera’s grandmother. Not to mention the star of the show: Rancho Grill’s signature Béarnaise sauce, freshly prepared to order for each client. And then the desserts… including dark Belgian chocolate fondue with seasonal fruit, and Belgian white and black chocolate duo. As we mentioned before, Rancho Grill is especially famous for its bodega. Sommelier Alfonso is on hand

to offer authoritative advice on 350 different wines ranging from moderately priced to absolute top-of-the-range, including champagne from Ghislain’s private cuvée and two local Spanish wines he personally blended with a professional enologist. “We don’t just buy wine and put our label on it,” says Vera. “We create it together with the bodega.” The restaurant ambience is also an enticing lure for discerning diners. In addition to a spacious outdoor terrace (enclosed during the colder months), Rancho Grill features its own special private areas: a wine corner for private parties and tastings, up to a maximum of eight people; a gin bar, where the sommelier weaves his cocktail magic; a chic Captain’s Corner for six guests; and the Tiffany Room, which can cater for celebrations of up to 30 people and features on its walls the restaurant’s endearing dog-themed paintings. On Saturday evenings, the restaurant has live music – soft, non-intrusive sounds for those enjoying a romantic dinner or even later fancying a dance. Bookings are also now open for New Year’s Eve, which this year has one significant change: instead of a la carte, Vera and her team have prepared a reduced a la carte menu including Rancho Grill’s most popular dishes, and the option of a wine package by Alfonso – plus live music by Eric and Sofia, traditional Spanish “cotillón” (festive adornments and objects), grapes as midnight strikes, and a decoration with the wow-factor created by Vera herself. Ghislain and Vera also have also have another restaurant, Grill del Puerto, which offers diners the same menu and culinary philosophy in one of Marbella’s most exceptional settings – frontline Puerto Banús (next to Picasso restaurant). WINE NOTES

Denomination Upheaval IN RIOJA REGION By AJ Linn

Any lover of Spanish wine who has not been living in a cave for the last year will know that extraordinary things are happening in the Rioja region. It is all about the way a wine bottle’s back label is not permitted to specify the exact area of the region the grapes used to make the wine come from. One of the top bodegas, Artadi, decided it wants nothing more to do with Rioja and “resigned”. From one day to the next its products could no longer claim to be from Spain’s flagship region and became classified instead as “vino de mesa” (“table wine”). Of the three main geographical zones, Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja, and Rioja Alavesa, the latter has always been considered the best; and, while the great Riojas are made here, it is alleged, perhaps rather unfairly, that in the other areas they make “supermarket” wines that are sold for a few euros. Such is the vagueness of the DO rules that the 600 bodegas in the denomination can buy grapes anywhere for unlimited blending, so that the winery’s actual location is no guide to where the grapes were grown. Not so different actually from Champagne, where 80 per cent of the big houses have no vineyards and buy grapes from small farmers all over the region. Clearly the blue-chip wineries want it to be known they only use the Alavesa grapes but, since a “supermarket” wine currently has the same back label as a €200 one, it seems unfair they should not be allowed to make single-vineyard wines and emphasise the importance of terroir. A big bust-up will not help Rioja’s image, so let’s hope the rule-makers agree with the owner of Murrieta, Vicente Cebrian: “Rioja needs changing but not breaking up.” INTERNATIONAL TASTING IN LA RIOJA A colleague who just got back from the Cata de la Estacion recounted to me the huge interest in the event. The “Station Tasting” is a now annual gathering of wine critics and writers from all over the world that home in on the urban centre of Haro, capital of La Rioja, where the oldest-established, and some of the best, wineries are situated. These include López Heredia, CVNE, Rioja Alta, Bilbaínas, Muga, Roda and, most importantly for this article, Gómez Cruzado. This bodega is possibly the smallest and least-known of the “Station district”, but with some of the best wines. Its history is interesting. It was started in 1886 by a direct descendent of the Aztec emperor Moctezuma II, Mexican Angel Gómez de Arteche. It changed hands in 1916 when it was bought by the Gómez Cruzado brothers, and from then until the end of the last century it continued to develop slowly but commendably. A group of investors bought it in 1990 and in 2003 it was sold to the present owners, another Mexican family, which probably

118

explains why the wines are some of the best-selling Riojas in the old Aztec kingdom. In a very smart move, and to follow the new trend of Rioja in producing wines of a less classical style, the owners brought in as directors rising star winemaker David González and his partner Juan Antonio Leza. The results have been little short of sensational and, apart from revamping the original range of wines, the two trendsetters have introduced some “modern” Riojas, making Gomez Cruzado the most forward-looking winery in Haro, and in the top 10 for all Rioja. The Crianza (around €11) is a classic Tempranillo with a touch of Garnacha, and the Reserva (€17) preserves its classic style but with a very satisfying modern touch. The limited-production Honorable (10,000 bottles: €24) is one of the oldest and most recognisable labels from the bodega, but the recently launched Pancrudo 2011 (€32) is a revelation. It is a “terroir-based” wine with only 2,000 bottles made, using the currently fashionable Garnacha grape, and matured in what the bodega quaintly calls “egg-shaped concrete vats”, but which are in fact small qvevri, the clay pots that are used traditionally in Georgia to make and mature wine and which are catching on in many winemaking countries (now on UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity – a local bodega in Ronda has just started using them). To complete the range of “new” wines, there is Cerro Las Cuevas (€38) and a fabulous white, Montes Obarenes (€42), apart from the regular white, Blanco 2013 (€10), also matured in the “concrete eggs”. In a blind tasting in Marbella, no taster identified any of the wines as being from the Gómez Cruzado stable, but all were unanimous in pronouncing them “excellent, far above the average for even top Riojas…” Uniquely perhaps, here we have a classic winery with a pedigree that equals any other of the established Bodegas de la Estación but that, possibly owing to the Mexican connection, has not had the exposure in Spain its wines deserve. Until, that is, some mastermind hit on the idea of bringing in two young and modernising oenologists who have succeeded in turning everything on its head and achieving the place for Gómez Cruzado that its wines deserve.

BEST PAELLAS AND RICE RECIPES IN MÁLAGA

Food journalist and writer Fernando Sánchez-Gómez’s latest book, “Best Paellas and Rice Recipes in Málaga”, was unveiled to the press during a special presentation at the 1870 restaurant in San Pedro de Alcántara, presided over by culinary critic Enrique Bellver and Home & Lifestyle’s wine columnist Andrew J Linn – and followed by a wine tasting by Rioja bodega Baigorri. The book features more than 200 different ways to cook rice, mixed with food products from the rich and varied local pantry (meat, fish and seafood; fresh fruits and vegetables; dried fruits and legumes), cooked with extra virgin olive oil and paired with wines produced in Málaga and its nearby mountain ranges. The recipes are classified by chapters according to their preparation: moist, extra moist, paellas, risottos, sushis. This authoritative tome is also a food guide to Málaga and its province, providing information on restaurants where the rice dishes can be savoured, as well as many other eating establishments. As was noted at the presentation, “If there is a good rice dish on the menu, you will find the recipe here, directly from the chef who made it famous for you to try at home.” On sale at www.amazon.com.

The Benefits of Meditation ... AND BOTOX

Medical Minutes by John Schieszer

KEEPING NEGATIVE EMOTIONS IN CHECK Meditation can help tame your emotions even if you’re not a mindful person, according to researchers at Michigan State University in the United States. Reporting in the journal Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, psychology researchers recorded the brain activity of people looking at disturbing pictures immediately after meditating for the first time. These participants were able to tame their negative emotions just as well as participants who were naturally mindful. “Our findings not only demonstrate that meditation improves emotional health, but that people can acquire these benefits regardless of their ‘natural’ ability to be mindful,” said lead study investigator Yanli Lin, a Michigan State University graduate student. “It just takes some practice.” Mindfulness, a moment-by-moment awareness of one’s thoughts, feelings and sensations, has gained worldwide popularity as a way to promote health and wellbeing. But what if someone isn’t naturally mindful? Can they become so simply by trying to make mindfulness a “state of mind”? Researchers assessed 68 participants for mindfulness using a scientifically validated survey. The participants were then randomly assigned to engage in an 18-minute audio-guided meditation or listen to a presentation of how to learn a new language, before viewing negative pictures (such as a bloody corpse) while their brain activity was recorded. The participants who meditated had varying levels of natural mindfulness and showed similar levels of “emotion regulatory” brain activity as people with high levels of natural mindfulness. In addition, some of the participants were instructed to look at the gruesome photos “mindfully” (be in a mindful state of mind) while others received no such instruction. Interestingly, the people who viewed the photos “mindfully” showed no better ability to keep their negative emotions in check. This suggests that for non-meditators the emotional benefits of mindfulness might be better achieved through meditation rather than forcing a state of mindfulness, according to the researchers. BOTOX FOR URINARY INCONTINENCE VERSUS IMPLANTED ELECTRODES A new study by American researchers at Duke University in Durham in North Carolina is suggesting that it is a bit of toss up when comparing Botox to sacral neuromodulation (use of an implanted electrode for bladder control) in controlling episodes of refractory urgency urinary incontinence in women. Urgency urinary incontinence is a sudden need to void resulting in uncontrollable urine loss. This disruptive condition is common and increases with age. Women with refractory (not responsive to treatment) urgency urinary incontinence are treated with onabotulinumtoxinA (Botox) and sacral neuromodulation. This type of neurostimulation involves the implantation of a small electrode tip near the sacral nerve, which controls voiding function in the lower spine. The implanted device stimulates the nerve to act as a sort of pacemaker for the bladder. Researchers at nine medical centres randomly assigned 192 women with refractory urgency urinary incontinence to an injection of Botox and 189 women to sacral neuromodulation. The mean age of the women was 63. The researchers found that the Botox group had a statistically significant greater reduction in six-month average number of episodes of urgency incontinence per day compared to the sacral neuromodulation group (-3.9 compared with -3.3 episodes per day).

Women treated in the Botox group showed greater improvement in an overactive bladder questionnaire for symptom bother, treatment satisfaction and treatment endorsement compared to the sacral neuromodulation group. However, there was no significant difference for quality of life or for measures of treatment preference, convenience or adverse effects. The Botox group had an increase in the risk of urinary tract infections and need for self-catheterisations compared to the sacral neuromodulation group.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Exercising with Diabetes

It is commonly known that diabetes is a huge problem in the UK and worldwide. There are two types of diabetes: Type 1, which is caused by a failure of the pancreas to produce insulin (no one quite knows why); and Type 2, which is common in older people. Lifestyle changes are especially important in people with Type 2 diabetes. One such lifestyle intervention involves becoming more physically active – but for someone with diabetes and previously unused to exercising this can be quite daunting. Of course, being physically active results in many benefits such as lowered blood pressure, lowered stress, an improved immune system, increased muscle strength and reduced cardio-vascular risk. However, for people with diabetes and poor insulin control, exercise (combined with medication and diet) is key to keeping blood glucose levels down. There are many ways that exercise helps to lower blood glucose but most important is something known as “insulin sensitivity”. With exercise the cells in the body become more sensitive to insulin, making them more effective at burning glucose as energy rather than storing it as fat. This leads to an improvement in blood glucose levels that can last 12 to 72 hours after exercise and which has long-term benefits in people who are regularly active. There are, however, concerns, particularly with Type I diabetes or younger people, that exercise can lead to a dangerous drop in blood glucose levels. Although this is generally not the case for most people there are a few tips that are worth considering if new to an exercise programme.

126

1. Always check glucose levels before beginning a reasonable bout of exercise (walking for more than 40 minutes, for example). Generally if blood glucose is less than 100 mg/dL / 4 mmol/l before exercise, you should eat at least one carbohydrate before the workout: e.g. banana. 2. Always keep some quick sources of sugar handy in case you need it while exercising. This can be glucose tablets, glucose gel, hard candy (not sugar-free), fruit juice, raisins or a regular soft drink. Guidelines tell us that you don’t need to do excessive amounts of exercise to get long-term blood glucose control. A moderately paced walk of 30 to 45 minutes five times a week should be sufficient, or a shorter bout of exercise if of higher intensity. Ideally, aerobic exercises should be performed regularly as stronger muscles can contribute to improvements in blood glucose control. If you have diabetes and feel uncomfortable about beginning an exercise programme, why not get started with the help of a physiotherapist? Francis Bacon AND THE CLASSICS AT GUGGENHEIM BILBAO

28/10/16 19:51

The exhibition “Francis Bacon: From Picasso to Velázquez” will remain on show at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao until 8 January. Organised in collaboration with Grimaldi Forum Monaco and comprising almost 80 works, the show includes some of the most important but least exhibited paintings by the British artist born in Ireland, alongside works of classic masters from French and Spanish culture who had a significant influence on his career. Announcing the exhibition, the organisers said, “Bacon created a new universe of images conceived via literature, film, art and his own life, using a totally unique language, reflecting human vulnerability with utter rawness. Bacon’s nudes tend to feature isolated figures in everyday poses which the painter transformed by twisting their bodies into almost animal-like shapes, thus reinventing the portrait. Transgressive in both his life and his art, Bacon broke down many barriers that were deeply entrenched at the time, placing human beings in front of a mirror in which we could see ourselves in a raw, violent way.”

After his initial contact with Picasso’s oeuvre in the 1920s and 1930s, Bacon’s inspiration from Spanish culture is considered to be most obvious in his obsession with the portrait of Pope Innocent X painted by Velázquez in 1650. “Curiously, Francis Bacon never saw this Velázquez painting, which hangs at the Doria Pamphilj Gallery in Rome, in person; when he had the chance to lay eyes on it during his visit to the Italian capital in 1954, he preferred instead to retain the reproductions in his memory instead of seeing the original painting.” In addition to Velázquez, he was also fascinated by other classic Spanish painters such as Zurbarán, El Greco and Goya, “whose paintings he fervently admired at Madrid’s Museo del Prado, a museum he asked to visit alone just a few years before his death after seeing the Velázquez retrospective held there in 1990”. Francis Bacon died on a brief visit to Madrid in 1992. He never had a permanent home in Spain but he was known to have made extended trips to Málaga and visits to Sevilla, Utrera and Madrid. www.guggenheim-bilbao.es

news DAVID TOMS SUPPORT FUND

Vital Fundraising Appeal for MARBELLA Photographer As many people are now aware, Home & Lifestyle Magazine’s long-time and much-loved photographer David Toms is beginning his road to recovery in a specialist hospital in Toledo after suffering a traffic accident this past summer. Once he leaves the hospital, it is thought that he could require extensive treatment at home and, to help finance his rehabilitation and long-term goals, friends on the Costa del Sol have launched a special support fund. The fund organisers note, “David Toms is more than just a highly talented photographer, but is a person who has touched many people’s lives, from the brides whose special moments he captured to his clients, colleagues and a wide circle of friends here on the Costa del Sol and abroad. Everyone is rallying around in support of the person who added colour and humanity to their lives.“ David’s daughter recounted on Facebook something her father said while she was visiting him: “Sometimes it’s hard to see the reality of life, until we take a step back or something takes it away... and at the same time, the people that really love you for who you are come shining through. I would like to say thank you for all the support, wishes and generous donations. Sometimes you’ve got to fall down to stand back up straight.” There is still a lot of hope that next year David will be able to resume some kind of independent life again, especially as there have already been promising signs in his recuperation, but nobody knows at this stage – which is why the fund has been set up to cater for any eventuality. Exceptional Exhibition at Villa Padierna

The Villa Padierna Hotel was host to a unique exhibition of classical paintings, being shown for the first time outside Madrid. The two owners of these valuable works of art philanthropically offered free viewing to Costa del Sol residents and visitors, who otherwise would not have had the opportunity of viewing them. The works included a good selection of art by Russian artists. Although the exhibition has finished the paintings can be seen by appointment, currently at Casa Club in San Pedro de Alcántara. PRINCIPLE ASSURANCE

Avoid Taking the Spanish Health System for Granted If you are an expat living or working in Spain, one of the big questions is: do you have peace of mind when it comes to your healthcare options? As Principle Assurance notes, the Spanish health system can be confusing, “and has often been the subject of inaccurate or conflicting information”. So what exactly are your rights and coverage? “Well, that all depends,” says global distribution manager Steven Douglas. “There are so many variables that there isn’t a quick, simple answer to that question. First of all the European Health Insurance Card has quite limited cover, and is not designed for either expat workers or residents. Your residency status also affects what you may, or may not, be entitled to. I would advise any foreigner living or working in Spain to examine their coverage and their options before any medical help is needed.” There are many issues that need to be taken into account… What about language barriers? You may have travel insurance, but these policies are designed for short stays and only cover medical emergencies. What about Brexit? So what are the options? Specialist international health insurance policies can often be advantageous as opposed to local policies, notes

144

Principle Assurance, as many of the benefits within these policies have been tailored specifically to suit expatriates’ specific needs. Globally mobile citizens often require an international plan to cover them in a number of different countries. An international long-term licensed insurance company operating in 120 countries, Principle Assurance offer tailored plans for expats, competitive policies, evacuation services and 24-hour claim services.

TIPTOP SHADE

Launching the Fully Convertible Aluminium Pergola

Brustor, the leading European brand for state-of-the-art bioclimatic aluminium pergolas, just added an innovative model to its range: the B-600 convertible pergola. The new model’s roof louvers (panels) rotate in a 150-degree position, allowing easy sun and wind channeling that can also move partly or completely to the side for that wide open convertible look and feel. When fully open, the compressed louvers only occupy 13 per cent of the total roof surface, which is another unique design feature in aluminium pergolas. These pergolas invite the sun all year round and allow maximum light and warmth into the house when desired. Optional extras are dimmable LED-RGB lighting, an integrated design heater and elegant electric side wind and privacy screens. As Brustor’s official dealer for the Costa del Sol, TipTopShade can integrate the popular glass curtains. As a premiere for Spain, TipTopShade will demonstrate the B-600 with a full-option showcase at the Home Fair on 4 and 5 November in the Palacio de Congresos, Estepona. Specialist Advice

Cancellation

OF YOUR PROPERTY MORTGAGE IN SPAIN Article supplied by Spanish legal and fiscal advisors Arcos & Lamers

This issue we would like to inform you about the steps that need to be carried out to formally cancel a mortgage loan which has already been paid in full. Make sure the bank signs the title deed that cancels the mortgage in Spain. After the settlement of the debt with your bank, there is no reason to keep a charge over your property, which could somehow damage your interests in the future – such as in the event that you decide to sell the property. Note that the economic cancellation of the loan does not mean an automatic cancellation of the mortgage on your house in Spain, and therefore does not imply the removal of the mortgage at the Spanish Land Registry where your property is registered. To cancel the mortgage at the Land Registry the following steps are required: 1. You will need to contact the bank providing the loan so that, through their agents, they attend a Notary Public in order to grant the Cancellation of Mortgage Deed. 2. Once the deed has been granted, you submit the same document to the corresponding Liquidation Tax Office, as exempt from payment of stamp duty, within 30 days of its issuance.

146

3. Following the liquidation, you present the deed to the corresponding Land Registry for the removal of the charge, so that the mortgage is cancelled. The aforementioned procedure does not correspond to the bank, but needs to be carried out by you in order to ensure your Spanish property is free of charges. The expenses arising in connection with the cancellation are also covered by you. If you would like us to proceed with the necessary steps for the cancellation of your mortgage in Spain, please do not hesitate to contact us. We will contact your bank and prepare the granting of the Cancellation of Mortgage Deed, making sure that the mortgage is finally cancelled at the Land Registry where your property is registered.
