In a world where technology is constantly evolving, interior designers are taking advantage of 3D software. For many years Udesign has been at the forefront of this technology offering it as a standard service for our clients. Our in house 3D department works together with the design team to provide our clients a glimpse into the future so they can visualize their fully furnished project before it is even built. After the general layout and space distribution has been finalised, the furniture, colours, fabrics and materials are selected and then implemented into the design. Every detail is brought to life enabling our clients to visualise their future home whilst still having the flexibility to experiment with different ideas along the way, avoiding any potentially costly errors or mistakes, as any changes in the design are made virtually. FROM THE
EDITOR Fuengirola doesn’t usually attract much attention when measured against the more glamorous and chic appeal of Marbella. However, in many ways it provides an even more enlightening “classic Costa” microcosm of how 2016 proved to be a pivotal year in the Costa del Sol’s consolidation as one of Europe’s most cosmopolitan and coveted residential-tourism destinations – as well as a permanent home for tens of thousands of expatiates from northern climes. We were reminded of this one recent evening, all rugged up in winter woollies because yes, even here in our Mediterranean paradise it does get cold at this time of the year (although we can still enjoy al fresco lunches by the sea most days), and about to check out a new restaurant that had been gaining effusive plaudits on social media. In most other places in Europe, people would either be already in bed or huddled on the sofa in front of a fireplace, sipping glögg or mulled wine, and watching a re-run of an almost invariably dreadful “Christmas movie”, a gleam of nostalgia watering their eyes. Here, in the relative backwoods of Los Boliches, on a Monday night late in December, the streets were full of revellers (okay, maybe not revelling, just other people also heading out for dinner, a soothing after-work drink or an evening toilet break with Jack Russell). Several sumptuous new watering holes and dining establishments had opened for the festive season, while others had refurbished their fatigued façades and sexied up their rather outdated menus. Just like other parts of the Coast – led by the time-honoured capital of luxury, Marbella – Fuengirola is being transformed after the crisis years, only gradually because there’s no place for over-exuberance or over-confidence after what we’ve all been through, but perceptibly. Record Costa del Sol tourism numbers in 2016 have made their mark, the Coast is (arguably) even cooler for visitors than it was pre-crisis, the local real estate market and home decoration and design sectors are enjoying reassuring and ongoing growth… and all of that augurs well for a positive 2017. In the meantime, from all of us here at Home & Lifestyle Magazine, we trust you enjoyed a restful and reflective festive period, and we hope you have a reinvigorating and rousing year ahead.

ARCHITECT STUDIO For over a decade Udesign have colaborated with many of the countries leading architects on highend luxury projects in some of the most prestigious addresses in Europe including La Zagaleta Marbella, Verbier (Switzerland) and most reciently, Eaton Square London. In January 2016 the Udesign architect studio was formed with the intention of creating high-end luxury residential homes that are not only aesthetically stylish and contemporary on the outside, but also ooze sophistication and quality on the inside. This combination of both, the creative and the technical, define us as a very unique and innovative architectual studio as the architects and interior designer work together in the same company. Our design process begins from the inside out, focusing firstly on the interior spaces and their purpose to establish the best possible living environment while carefully considering exterior views, light, spacial planning and functionality. Given that Marbella boasts one of the best climates in Europe, we endeavor to create the feeling of an indoor outdoor living experience, where the terrace is a natural extension of the lounge, creating spaces which uplift the spirit and stimulate the senses.

The finest aspects of Marbella’s luxury lifestyle are being recreated in an exceptional new development in the neighbouring Ójen municipality. Palo Alto is located just four minutes from La Cañada shopping centre in Marbella, in a tranquil setting surrounded by nature. Officially presented at the end of November by Ójen mayor José Antonio Gómez Sánchez and architect and developer Matías Villarroel, the ultra-select, cutting-edge residential complex is being developed by Round Hill Capital and designed by award-winning architects Villarroel Torrico. A leading global real estate investment company founded in 2002, Round Hill Capital has a proven track record in the acquisition and development of luxury properties. It has invested more than €6 billion in European real estate assets, has developed over 100,000 residential apartments in Europe, and is currently one of the largest landlords in the Netherlands and CEE region. In addition, the company owns and operates Nido Student Living, one of Europe’s fastest growing and leading student housing companies. The name Palo Alto was chosen in honour of the pinsapo tree, a native species in the area that will surround the development, which is located on the outskirts of Ojén and offers panoramic views of the sea and mountains. It will be built on 50 hectares, of which 40 per cent is set aside for green open space. Round Hill Capital stresses that the project is being developed in accordance with the Ójen PGOU (municipal town planning agreement) and it now has a building licence. Construction is due to begin early in the New Year and building work is planned between early 2017 and autumn 2018.
The total investment is projected at €250 million, taking into account land development, infrastructure and construction, and it is expected to generate hundreds of direct and indirect jobs. The first of six phases planned in total for Palo Alto will be made up of 60 apartments of two, three and four bedrooms, and 15 penthouses of three and four bedrooms. In addition, the master plan includes a health club for phase one, comprising a state-of-the-art gym, spa, swimming pool and children’s club. It also includes a business centre with a concierge service, plus 24-hour security. The apartments vary in price from €440,000 to €1 million. Palo Alto has already established itself as an ideal destination for those attracted to the area. Fifty per cent of phase one homes were sold in just four months, with buyers from 16 countries in Europe (with a high proportion from Germany and Belgium), North and South America, and the Middle East. Nearly half of the buyers are aged 50-60, with 40 per cent in the 40-50 age range. The majority either have older children or are “empty-nesters”, and they represent professionals from the business, finance, medical and design sectors. According to Round Hill Capital, in terms of preference, the buyers are mainly purchasing as a second home for holidays or to rent out, with a smaller percentage buying as a first home. BEACH LIVING AT ITS BEST

Wherever in the world you may be, beachside living commands a premium. Yet American equity fund Real Capital Solutions is soon to release Aria – a luxurystandard development of apartments on Mijas Costa with direct access to a stunning stretch of golden sands, and a very reasonable price tag. Today’s house-hunters could be forgiven for overlooking this idyllic location – settled between Fuengirola and Marbella – as there is little availability of new properties. But it is among the most convenient spots on the whole of the Costa del Sol. Not only does it enjoy clean beaches and clear waters with a choice of chiringuitos within walking distance, but it also neighbours the popular leisure area of Río Fuengirola and expansive shopping mall Miramar. Both Marbella, to the west, and Fuengirola, to the east, offer charming old towns with a lovely blend of traditional Spanish life and contemporary cuisine. It is a seven-minute drive from the train station and is immediately connected to the national highway, just 20 minutes from Málaga airport. Another common quandary for Costa del Sol property purchasers is the choice between beach or views. Yet again, Aria provides both. Its elevated position, on the horizon of the Mediterranean, allows owners and residents a privileged vista to tranquil seas with little more traffic than the occasional passing sailing boat. In terms of location, Aria is truly unique. Therefore, it is only right that the architectural team developed a suitably iconic design that set itself apart from the current trend of linear architecture. The inherent curves are featured throughout all of the property façades, communal areas and landscaping. And each of the 39 properties has been designed to maximise views, allowing plenty of Spanish light to flow throughout the lounge, kitchen and master bedrooms. The architectural team intentionally steered away from a more typically contemporary approach, aiming instead to create a welcoming community of three buildings, unified with swimming pools, large central plaza and manicured gardens. Even though this development has not been officially released for sale yet, Real Capital Solutions are already receiving an overwhelming amount of interest in Aria. Therefore, ahead of the 2017 launch date, they are inviting potential buyers to join a priority listing service where savvy investors can secure the best units upon release. Heaven 11 – Reaching New Heights Designed by Ark Architects Completed in autumn 2016, this stunning modern villa, located in the hills just 15 minutes from Puerto Banús and Marbella, sets the bar even higher for luxury residences on the Costa del Sol. The property is for sale – fully decorated with bespoke furniture and finishings – exclusively through estate agent Terra Meridiana. Occupying a 5,000 square plot just below the top ridge of the prestigious La Zagaleta estate in Benahavís, Heaven 11 has a built area of over 2,300 square metres on three levels, plus an additional 330 square metres of terraces, and has been designed by Sotogrande-based architectural practice Ark Arquitectos. The entry level features a dramatic hallway, with twin staircases and lift, opening onto a huge living room with uninterrupted views to the sea. Adjacent are a second sitting room, dining room and 55 square metre professional-quality kitchen. There are also two en-suite guest bedrooms on the main floor. Upstairs, the palatial master suite has its own living room, dressing area and elegant bathroom, as well as a private terrace. There are two more double bedrooms on the same level, both with dressing rooms, private bathrooms and terrace access. Downstairs, there is a state-of- the-art entertainment floor, with bar and lounge area, indoor infinity pool, cinema, gym, wine cellar, office, two guest suites and a garage with space to store a sizeable car collection. The extensive gardens are fully landscaped and the terrace by the outdoor pool and jacuzzi has a chill-out and barbecue area, making it the perfect place to spend summer evenings. Within its 2,200 acres (800 hectares) of oak and cork-forested hills, La Zagaleta offers its privileged residents 24-hour security, a choice of two members-only 18-hole golf courses, an equestrian centre and even a heliport. Adam Neale, Terra Meridiana’s director, says, “We are proud to have been chosen to market such an exciting property and have already received numerous enquiries. Heaven 11 marks a new high in contemporary homes on the Costa del Sol and will appeal to those who demand only the very best.” www.terrameridiana.com / www.ark-architects.com

PROPERTY PERSPECTIVE
NEW YEAR OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE MARKET By John Graham
A New Year brings new opportunities for the property market on the Costa del Sol, so what can we expect in 2017? Before looking into the crystal ball to predict the future we first need to look back at 2016 and beyond to understand recent trends and the property market’s starting point for 2017. The years 2015 and 2016 were important for the Costa del Sol property market. You could argue that it turned a corner in terms of sales and prices. Major foreign investors and banks headed to the Costa del Sol to invest in newbuild apartment and luxury villa projects, as well as bank repossession apartment and villa projects. Resale properties sold well and there was a substantial increase in refurbishments, bringing older properties up to modern standards. The golden triangle of Marbella, Benahavís and Estepona benefited the most from major property developments, but Mijas Costa and Málaga also enjoyed a substantial increase in new developments. Year-on-year property sales increased steadily during 2015 and 2016 and, most significantly, property prices bottomed out in almost all prime locations on the Costa del Sol. Prices started to rise in the second half of 2016, so all in all a positive property market. In 2017 new-build luxury apartment and villa projects will continue to grow along the Coast, as will more affordable apartment projects. Architects will be busy designing state-of-the-art modern contemporary luxury properties, which are now in great demand.
100
Luxury living on the Costa del Sol will continue to improve as more new homes and refurbished homes will have cutting-edge technology included as standard, which in previous years would have been an extra luxury. There will be floor-to-ceiling windows, high ceilings, under-floor heating, openplan interiors, automation systems and energy-efficient homes with low greenhouse gas emissions using the latest technology. Interior designers will continue to be challenged this year to create spectacular luxury interiors for villas but also to improve luxury interiors for mid-market properties. In 2017 mortgages should continue to be more available and offer historically low interest rates, making it easier for buyers to purchase their dream home on the Costa del Sol. Geopolitics apart, the volume of property sales should continue to grow year on year on the Costa del Sol in 2017, if resale and new properties offer buyers good value for money, good quality and good capital growth. So, my crystal ball predicts another good year for the property market on the Costa del Sol. In future editions, I will be writing about property trends on the Coast and keeping you up to date on the movers and shakers in the industry in 2017. In the meantime, a happy and prosperous New Year to all Home & Lifestyle Magazine readers. John Graham is a senior surveyor and advisor to property investors. NATURE & LIFE By Ali a Bab
First let me congratulate you on surviving another year. Happy New Year everyone! I hope this will be an excellent one for you, and let us all try to do more to save this lovely world we live in. Recycled and eco-friendly products are everywhere; wood especially is a material which we can find all over the place. It just takes a bit of time to go and find what you want. I showed you last issue what could be done with wine bottles in a wine shop. A very good idea and I hope that, whoever drank all the wine, didn’t have a horrible hangover! Have a look at this restaurant in China, The Tang Palace by FCJZ Dezeen. It is very smart, really fun and a great design using bamboo, which is such a versatile wood, used all over the place because it is simply marvellous. It is not really a recycled material here because, due to its profligacy, it is found all over the world. I love gardens and gardening, as well as designing them. Here in the south of Spain, with a bit of work and letting the weather work its magic, now is the time to get into doing all the things in the garden that will ensure it is looking fantastic when spring come round. People have created design work in gardens to great effect. Have a look at what is being used: old tyres, plastic bottles, a piano, a cello, more tyres, an old chest of drawers… there is an infinity of materials. Do try out something different when you get into your garden, and save those many objects which would otherwise be thrown out.

THE FINE ART
OF CREATING LUXURY PROPERTIES INTERVIEW WITH IVAN GEORGIEV AND YURI BULICAN FROM BANUS GROUP
When was the Banus Group established and what is the concept behind the company? Banus Group was established in 2011 and since then has continued to grow and start new projects. Our main concept is to have a creative and experienced team, and that’s why we are always looking for talented and dynamic people to join us. We try to be close to our clients and to make them feel safe and comfortable with us. For any project we undertake – turnkey, renovation, interior design or property acquisition – we lead our clients through all the processes, trying to benefit them and helping to avoid problems and complications. Our main objective is to give the best quality and to apply all our professionalism in everything we do. At the present time it’s not enough just to do your job: now it’s very important to follow all the innovations and to know all the modern tendencies. That’s why we never stop studying and improving our professional skills.
104
What kind of projects have you been involved in and what were you most proud of? All the projects we have undertaken and have participated in have always been very special for us, because we have dedicated all our imagination and professionalism to them. Every project is a very creative process. The creation of a home cannot be only about building: it’s a synergy of the emotions, expectations, design preferences and unique style of every person. This year we have completed several projects that are really worth being proud of: new brand villas with exclusive designs, and renovations that have given new life to the houses and their owners, as well as fantastic architectural projects that are to be developed next year. Tell us more about the many different services that you offer... Banus Group offers an unparalleled range of services to help you get the house of your dreams. Our great advantage is being able to cover all areas: construction, design, landscaping, legal support and real estate.

Banus Group uses only modern and reliable construction machinery. Our brigades, made up of highly qualified professionals, are equipped with all the necessary tools. Our company cooperates with many well-known manufacturers of building materials and equipment. This enables us not only to provide high-quality construction but also to offer excellent prices. The interiors of our houses are an authentic reflection of their luxury. Bathroom fittings decorated with gold from leading Italian brands Gentry Home, Labor Legno and Gaia; fireplaces created with the best marble; porcelain from the most famous Italian houses, Petracer’s and Emil Ceramica… every detail is a quality label. Marvellous spa centres, decorated with mosaic from renowned brand Friulmosaic, in accordance with the individual project, and always a modern jacuzzi located in the upper part of the home with exciting sea views… these are our distinctive lines. When it comes to equipping the interiors, every room is an art creation. Luxury houses all over the world have been built in collaboration with the brands Andrea Fanfani (furniture) and Cad’oro (kitchens), and we are proud to be their partners. Our designers use specialised and advanced software and regularly improve their skills and investigate current trends in the field of building design. Why should people come to Banus Group? First of all, because we are really in love with our work and we transmit this sensation to our clients. Everything we do is based on confidence and solid warranties. Banus Group’s experts develop projects of any complexity and a variety of architectural styles. All the calculations have high precision and are carried out in accordance with the requirements of standard technical documents. The layout and design of the buildings are defined by actual trends in architecture and construction. In addition, they take into account urban planning traditions in the specific region of Spain. All these aspects help us to work successfully with the most demanding clients. Banus Group C/ Ramon Gomez de la Serna 22, Local D, Marbella Tel. (+34) 952 866 339 / 616 381 860 / 618 779 554 Tel. How would you describe your architectural style? I don’t have “one architectural style” because my vision and concepts change from time to time. These changes are partly in response to new clients’ demands but mainly as a result of my personal research around the world into the deeper meanings of lifestyle. After working for 30 years in Marbella, and observing many changes in the kinds of clients, especially when it comes to nationality and age, it is impossible to be in this industry and always follow the same style. You have had a great deal of success on the Costa del Sol… Why do you think your architectural style has been so popular here? Because I follow the waves… interspersed with my own opinions. The market can be a cruel factor, because it is something that is out there and we cannot change it towards our direction. However, we can combine our vision in that direction and offer a product that fulfils both clients’ wishes and mine as an architect. I look for aesthetic harmony. Architectural styles can change, and that is not only my decision. I have had a great deal of success on the Costa del Sol thanks to recognition of my work over the years, and because people can see them as signature designs.
You are also one of the owners of Essenza Living… Tell us more about the concept. What has this year got in store for you and your architectural team? Essenza Living is a dream come true, which I share with Patrick van Dam, my business partner in the real estate sector. It is a selection of properties designed every year under my signature, for sale. Various investors in the real estate Industry, and in other sectors, believe in my designs and Essenza’s standards of quality, and give our company the opportunity to undertake the whole project management until the house is on the market. We have sold every house during the past four years, which is a great success. In 2017 there will be new signature houses along the coast, but we will also add a new generation of luxury villas with prices starting at €10 million. Marbella has unlimited potential to be the best residential tourism city in Europe. Carlos Lamas (Architect) Golden Mile Commercial Centre Marbella Real, Marbella Tel. HOME FURNISHING WITH A TOUCH OF LOVE INTERVIEW WITH JULIE LAW & STEPHANIE SMITH FROM YORKSHIRE LINEN/BEDS & MORE
What is the basic concept behind Yorkshire Linen/Beds & More? We aim to achieve an easy, relaxed and enjoyable shopping experience at Yorkshire Linen and Beds & More, providing excellent customer service with quality and good value for money. We are always looking out for the latest designs throughout the seasons, and we find it exciting to bring new designs and ideas into the stores. We aim to make the store a one-stop shop for easiness… living spaces, bedrooms and bathrooms. With expert advice to help customers choose, for example, the correct mattress, we feel it’s almost like finding the shoe that fits perfectly. After all, those finishing touches such as curtains, cushions, rugs and throws make your house a home to love. How would you describe your style at Yorkshire Linen/Beds & More? You will find a wide selection of products to choose from in many different styles and designs from both stores: from bang on trend colours and fabrics, nat-

ural linen, rich earthy textures and shabby chic vintage style bedding to classic, elegant and luxurious crushed velvet with diamante finishing touches. Modern and contemporary – we have it all. What should people look out for when buying bed linen? Quality bedding at affordable prices… Make sure that you have the correct size for your bed for a better fit. Our advice would be, if you love your bed, the feel of soft, luxury sheets which helps you achieve a good night’s sleep is money well spent and a good investment that should last for many years. When buying curtains, what are the various options available? It is important to measure the size of the window correctly, from height to width, to make sure that the curtain fits perfectly. Ready-made curtains and voiles come in different lengths and widths, with the option of eyelets that simply slide onto a pole or curtains with header tape

that hooks onto a ring/pole or track. For windows that don’t have readymade sizes available we offer an alteration service. Blackout curtains that keep out the light and heat are a good option here in Spain due to the hot summer, as they protect inside furniture and fabrics, etc., from fading. Accessories such as tie-backs, hold-backs and coordinating cushions are also available. Single or double poles in different coloured metal or wood are available in various sizes. In conclusion… The staff at Yorkshire Linen and Beds & More are not just a working team but like a big family, and with a mix of nationalities… English, German, Spanish and Russian. Maison&Objet Paris has once again upgraded the trade experience for its January show in Paris from 20 to 24 January. The organisers’ ongoing objective is to broaden the fair’s professional audience while continuing to meet exhibitors’ expectations and to that end they are keen for “industry professionals to find a rich and inspiring visitor experience and exhibitors to enjoy the updated layout, which will allow them to reach new markets”. As they note, “With the rise of multichannel marketing, visitors expect an inspiring and tangible experience, one that justifies travelling a long way to attend the fair.” In addition to the Inspirations Forum, which will continue to provide forwardlooking insight into the industry, M&O will now be offering a quick overview of the season’s highlights with a What’s New! exhibit in each of the “Maison” and “Objet” hubs. With the aim of bringing more visibility to retailers, M&O will offer greater integration of fabrics and home textile brands into the “Cosy & Elegant” sectors, and a specific focus on the “Kids” sector, while also working on achieving greater synergy between the halls more specifically targeted to contract professionals, “Actuel” and “Influences”. Furthermore, in a new strategic step in its digital strategy, the organises are launching the Maison&Objet and More (MOM) platform: mom.maison-objet.com. Celebrating emerging talent is a long-standing tradition for Maison&Objet, and this month’s Rising Talent Awards – which “reveal tomorrow’s star lifestyle designers in a curated space” – honour the United Kingdom, with the support of

Sir John Sorrell, founder of the London Design Festival, London Design Biennale and Saturday Night Club Trust. According to the organisers, “This season the show invited six of the most famous names in the world of design and lifestyle to nominate one of the six talents. From the most promising in Great Britain today, whether British nationality or from abroad, one thing unites them: living and working in the UK. Maison&Objet Paris is committed to promoting excellence, innovation and quality, while nurturing inspirational creatives.” The six internationally acclaimed designers are Sir Paul Smith, Tom Dixon, Ilse Crawford, Nigel Coates, Ross Lovegrove and Jay Osgerby; and the “UK Rising Talents”, Marcin Rusak, John Booth, Giles Miller, Sebastian Cox, Studio SWINE and Zuza Mengham. Finally, every year, Maison&Objet spotlights the most outstanding names on the contemporary international design and décor scene, with a leaning towards the specific focus that characterise each of the two shows: a more product designoriented profile for January and a designer recognised for their work in interior design for September. The person chosen to receive the award has the opportunity to showcase their work in a space entirely designed by and dedicated to them, and in January the “Designer of the Year” is Pierre Charpin. www.maison-objet.com

This custom creation is an evolution of the limited edition EVE and was designed and handcrafted by Bandit9, a Saigon-based workshop known for breaking the mould and building bespoke bikes with a futuristic design. As the company’s “Bandit Chief”, Daryl Villanueva, says, “Riding is a form of meditation for me. I’m at peace when I’m on a motorcycle. My focus is directed toward the road and nothing else. I can’t think of anything else I do that requires my complete attention on the present.” The process starts with the stripping of a 1967 Honda Supersport, followed by a complete facelift. “While everyone tends to go old-school on their custom designs with a few tweaks to make it look current,” adds Villanueva, “we tend to ignore the past and just make leaps forward.” A standout design feature of the EVE MK II (which will be limited to nine pieces) is its handcrafted unibody tank in a sleek bullet shape built from a single piece of hand-polished steel. “While visually appealing, the form also combines the tank, seat and rear cowl into one – not an easy feat. One wrong move and the metal must be scrapped and the process restarted from the beginning.” Adding to the production level of difficulty is the fabrication of the X Cowl. It is a common shape in origami, but executing it in steel requires particularly skilled hands and great patience. Other handcrafted details include a cowhide leather seat worked into the elongated unibody tank, custom exhaust, exposed suspension and electric starter. “We want our bikes to embody (an) optimistic future and to show others that we don’t have to live in this cookie-cutter world where cars all look the same,” says Villanueva. “I actually blame bureaucracy and stringent road rules for killing imagination and possibility. That is why I named the company after outlaws. Because we’re not playing by those rules.” He says that being part of the MB&F M.A.D. Gallery was always the dream. “This isn’t an exaggeration. It actually was a goal that I had set myself when I started Bandit9. I wanted to create something that could stand next to the finest machines out there. And I always said that if the M.A.D. Gallery ever called me, I would know that I am onto something good.”

Funky Hotel
EPITOMISES FUSION OF OLD AND NEW IBIZA

Travel HL49.indd 118
21/12/16 15:29
When clients Jason Bull and Nick Reid approached Sean Cochrane to transform the Es Vivé deco bar and, eventually, the whole hotel, they all shared the same vision. Quite simply, a fusion of art deco style and Ibizan nightlife to create “a beacon of white and turquoise between Playa D’en Bossa and Ibiza Town”. The £2.5 million makeover of the “funkiest hotel in Ibiza” included the incorporation of subtle features of the 1940s building, one of the few remaining listed structures on the island, and the modern twists of new Ibizan nightlife culture. As they describe it, “The art deco exterior façade is permeated with Ibizan turquoise and white, while the interior exudes a new world from old Ibiza – subtle greys, luxurious soft furnishings and bespoke detailing throughout that provide a sanctuary from the bustling Ibizan nightlife below.” Styled by Bull and Reid and executed by Cochrane (creative director and founder of Cochrane Design), the hotel bar “breathes art deco style with an ageless, elegant tone. The art deco mirroring, barrel chairs and pearlised bar create a fusion of decadence and originality”. The winner of a 5* Award for “Best Hotel Interior Spain” at the Europe Property Awards and named “Best Hotel Under 200 Rooms Europe” at the International Hotel and Property Awards 2016, Es Vivé is one of the few hotels on the island offering spacious outdoor areas. The luxurious beach club-style Sky Bar is reminiscent of the Blue Marlin, offering elevated panoramic views of the Mediterranean sea below for guests and a relaxing hub for island socialites and creatives to enjoy drinks when the sun goes down, with pure white linens, recliners juxtaposed with palms, and a pool DJ’ed by different artists for a truly Ibizan vibe. After an earlier collaboration in Paris, Home & Lifestyle Magazine once again joined the modelling agency Scouting Division for a glamorous fashion photo shoot – this time closer to home at the DoubleTree by Hilton Resort & Spa Reserva del Higuerón. The hotel is one of the Costa del Sol’s premier new hotel resort projects. It was re-branded in 2015 following an agreement between the global hotel chain and Reserve del Higuerón, and the Costa del Sol thus became the first location in Europe, and one of only two worldwide, to have a Hilton Worldwide adultsonly (recommended for guests 16 years and over) resort and spa. The sedately refined Reserva del Higuerón gated residential development is located in Benalmádena municipality, just 10 minutes from Málaga’s international airport. The hotel has been designed to create a “gallery” ambience, with a wide and diverse range of amenities and services. These include the Nagomi Spa, which was named as the second best spa in Spain by luxury travel club Voyage Privé and offers wellness therapies, waterfalls, an indoor pool, a Turkish bath and a sauna, as well as extensive fitness facilities including tennis and pádel tennis courts, sand sports (volleyball, etc.), a gym with high-performance technology and personal trainers, yoga and pilates, and two outdoor pools. Other amenities include a shopping centre, baby massage courses, flower essences management, feng-shui and chi-kung oriental techniques, and a 250 square metre avant-garde art exhibition area. The hotel resort has a total of 177 rooms, including 24 junior suites, while its flagship restaurants are the Al Rolo (for seafood and Mediterranean cuisine) and the Sollo Restaurant by Diego Gallegos, which received a highly coveted first star in the 2016 Michelin Guide. Another enticing haven for guests is the Infinity terrace bar on the top floor, with a panoramic pool, sky chill-out lounge and stunning views over the Bay of Fuengirola. Just before Christmas, the La Sala Restaurant & Bar underwent a jaw-dropping refurbishment to give customers even more of a wow-factor when they come to visit this popular celebrity haunt. The design work was carried out by the creative FOC Design team, who also designed La Sala’s sister restaurant, OAK Garden & Grill, and La Sala Gibraltar. To celebrate the new look, La Sala Banús threw two VIP parties attended by, among many others, international football referee Mark Clattenburg and Marbella Town Hall luminaries Javier Porcuna and Manuel Osorio. Guests enjoyed free-flowing beverages and La Sala’s signature canapés while being entertained by the Masquerade Duo, Jackie Brown Band, Menzillon Drum Duo and Planeta 80 from Córdoba. The idea behind the refurbishment was to allow for more seating, as well as to refresh La Sala’s overall look, maintaining its contemporary and chic feel with a touch more glamour. FOC Design introduced a smoky and sexy colour palette which was inspired by textured flamingo wallpaper with grey, charcoal and smoky gold colours. Where there has been a particularly noticeable transformation is in the Piano Room, not only because of the extended seating area and a new stage, but also the overall ambience of this exclusive area, now called the Live Lounge. Other decorative touches include glorious chandeliers and new curved booths in camel velvet surrounded by a matte gold chain curtain lit from above. The bigger stage was completed with a nature wall backdrop and fairy lights to frame the talented entertainers who perform at La Sala. Outside there is new teak-coloured decking, retractable pergolas to provide shade from the intense sun and fairy lights wrapped around palm trees to create a charming ambience during the evening. Their large international menu has something to offer everyone at very reasonable prices. All of the dishes have been well thought-out and are beautifully presented on the plate. WINE NOTES
Ronda is on a Roll By AJ Linn
WHEN PRINCE ALFONSO HOHENLOHE MADE IT KNOWN THAT HE WAS HEADING UP TO THE SIERRA DE RONDA TO MAKE WINE, ALL OF US IN MARBELLA THOUGHT HE HAD LOST HIS MARBLES. IN SPITE OF BEING RECOGNISED AS A VERSATILE BUSINESSMAN WHO HAD TURNED HIS HAND, ADMITTEDLY WITH MIXED RESULTS, TO A NUMBER OF PROJECTS, THIS WAS A NEW ONE. WHAT DID OUR BELOVED AND CHARISMATIC ALFONSO KNOW ABOUT GRAPES AND VINEYARDS AND ALL THAT? The Marbella Club had passed out of his ownership and the assumption was that Alfonso now had enough money to do whatever he wanted. Retirement was not an option, so his thoughts apparently turned to the Cortijo de la Monjas finca that he had owned for many years near Ronda. The property, set in a natural valley among rolling hills, was a delightful place even without vineyards, but his friend, the gentleman oenologist Marqués de Griñon, saw other possibilities. Flying-winemaker Michel Rolland also became involved and 80,000 French vines were planted. The resulting wines from 1992 on were passable, and mainly bought by wine snobs, although the rosado did win a minor award. Matters improved when Juan María Vetas, now with his own bodega, came to Ronda from Bordeaux and took over. But, as tends to happen in any business, Alfonso’s was sold to a multinational company and the distinctive label disappeared. Up in them there hills at between 750 and 1,000 metres altitude, you can expect to find mostly Shiraz/Syrah, Petit-Verdot, Tempranillo and Cabernet-Sauvignon grape varieties, and occasionally the local Romé. At the outset many people thought Ronda wines were overpriced, and restaurants on the Coast refused to list them for that reason. Prices have now come down to a more reasonable level. Celebrated English wine writer John Radford (RIP) once wrote ‘the dream has taken hold’, referring to the Ronda wine industry and its huge potential. Similarly, at a wine conference a few years ago, Jancis Robinson sat with some of the world’s best winemakers, including American Paul Draper and Spain’s enfant terrible Alvaro Palacios, to spread the same message. Wine had been made in the Sierra de Ronda since the beginning of time, and in spite of its artisan nature the activity gave work to people who otherwise would have had to scratch a living from subsistence farming. Unfortunately the phylloxera bug devastated Ronda’s vineyards in the 19th century and the region was put out of the wine business for the foreseeable future. It is now very much back in action, all happening in the last couple of decades. There is a heavy non-Spanish influence in the area, with several producers being of foreign origin. German-born Federico Schatz got his wine to the market before Hohenlohe, and Swiss Conrad-Stauffer, who started in 1991, recently sold his bodega, having finally perfected wines like Soleón, San Lorenzo, Cristina and Niño León. To make wine in Ronda you need to be patient. The Cortijo los Aguilares 800-hectare finca, acquired by José Antonio Itarte, a Basque businessman, in 1999, will take years to become profitable, as he himself admits. But in the meantime ace winemaker Bibi Garcia continues to win international awards for the Pinot Noir. The other wines, such as Tadeo and Pago del Espino, are far above average for the region. Currently only a few hectares are under vines but plans are afoot for expansion and also a white variety to add to the already existing Pinot Noir, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Syrah, There are four Cortijo los Aguilares reds and a rosado, all very good indeed. The regular vino tinto (2015) is the wine of the year as they say, made with Tempranillo, Syrah and Merlot. Good value at €11 euros (all prices ex-bodega, though
124
you will find these wines at most major outlets, since they are certainly among the best and most representative of the Ronda region.) The rosado is equally good and the same price. The Pago El Espino (2014), a blend of Petit Verdot, Tempranillo and Syrah, is about as typical a Ronda wine as you can get. Not exactly a snip at €19, but very full and flavoursome. The Tadeo 2013 has sold out but the new 2014 vintage is to be released soon. This Pinot Noir is many aficionado’s favourite wine from the bodega; limited production and hand-numbered bottles: €30. Which brings us finally to the star of the bodega, the Pinot Noir (2015), though by the time you read this all will be gone. Bodega owner Jose Antonio Itarte is a lover of great burgundies, so wanted to produce a notable Pinot Noir – and he has succeeded. The winery oenologist, Bibi Garcia, although having worked on two continents, had never made a Pinot Noir until 2004, when the first Aguilares one appeared on the market. It is highly unusual for a Pinot Noir, a difficult grape variety and very delicate to be produced successfully at such a high altitude where the winters can be harsh. But Bibi did it, not once, but three times, which is the number of top awards the wine won in consecutive years at the Mundial de Pinot Noir at Sierre, Switzerland. The Gold Medal was the prize as the top choice out of more than 1,100 wines from 25 countries, blind-tasted by an expert jury.

Cutting-Edge Help FOR KNEE INJURIES AND POOR VISION Medical Minutes by John Schieszer
“Our findings confirm the safety and feasibility of cartilage grafts engineered from nasal cells to repair damaged knee cartilage, but use of this procedure in everyday clinical practice is still a long way off as it requires rigorous assessment of efficacy in larger groups of patients and the development of manufacturing strategies to ensure cost effectiveness,” said lead author Ivan Martin, professor of tissue engineering at the University of Basel and University Hospital Basel in Switzerland. He said that, while this is was a promising advance and might ultimately help patients with osteoarthritis, much larger studies with longer follow-up were required before this technique could be widely available.
USING THE NOSE TO TREAT DAMAGED KNEES Researchers are now reporting they have successfully harvested cartilage cells from patients’ own noses to produce cartilage transplants for treating bum knees in 10 adults. All the patients had cartilage that was damaged by injury. Two years after reconstruction, most recipients reported improvements in pain, knee function and quality of life. They also developed repair tissue in their knees that was similar in composition to native cartilage. Researchers at the University Hospital Basel in Switzerland conducted a phase one study in which they extracted a small biopsy specimen (six millimetres in diameter) from the nasal septum under local anaesthetic. The harvested cells were multiplied by exposing them to growth factors for two weeks. The expanded cells were then seeded onto collagen membranes and cultured for two additional weeks, generating a 30 x 40 millimetre cartilage graft. The engineered graft then was cut into the right shape and used to replace damaged cartilage that was surgically removed from the recipient’s knee. The study showed that nine out of 10 recipients (one was excluded because of several independent sports injuries) reported substantial improvements in the use of their knee and in the amount of pain compared to before surgery. No adverse reactions were reported.
IMPROVING LOW LEVEL VISION WITH NEW TECHNOLOGY A unique wearable artificial vision device may help people who are legally blind “read” and recognise faces. It may also help these individuals accomplish everyday tasks with significantly greater ease than using traditional assistive reading devices, according to a new study presented at the 120th annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Millions of older adults have low vision. This sight loss impairs a person’s ability to do simple daily tasks. Optical and electronic devices such as handheld magnifiers, tele-microscopic glasses and computer and video magnifiers can help. However, these devices are bulky, cumbersome or not readily portable. Researchers used a device called Orcam My Eye for their study. It clips to glasses, making it hands-free. It features a miniature camera that sees and recognises what the user is viewing, whether text or a face. It then reads what it is seeing to the user via a small bone-conduction earpiece. The user activates the device by simply pointing a finger to the object or text, tapping it or pressing a trigger button. Researchers tested the device on 12 legally blind people, who all had a visual acuity of less than 20/200. Study participants performed a 10-item test simulating activities of daily life, including recognising products and reading a variety of items such as emails, letters, newspapers, book and signs. They earned one point for the successful completion of each item, and a zero for each not completed. The total possible score was 10. The researchers observed the participants doing the tasks without the device, then while wearing it after receiving a 90- to 120-minute training session and finally after wearing the device for one week. They found that, without wearing the device, the participants’ average score was 2.5 out of 10. When they first tried the device, their average score improved to 9.5 out of 10; and after a week of wearing the device the average score of participants improved to 9.8 out of 10. “While there have been many advances in eye care, the options for assistance in completing daily tasks are limited and cumbersome,” said Dr. Elad Moisseiev, with the Tel Aviv Medical Centre in Israel. “This represents a new step in the evolution of assistance devices for people with low vision, giving them hope for improving their functionality, independence and quality of life.”

Be Careful
NOT TO OVER-EXPOSE YOURSELF THIS WINTER By Rachel Garrod
As winter approaches and the temperature drops, people – particularly the elderly and those with a pre-existing heart or lung disease – are advised to wrap up warmly and avoid the cold as much as possible. Medics around the world have long recognised an increased mortality rate that is associated with a drop in the temperature. Researchers speculate that, in the case of coronary events at least, the colder temperature causes changes in the circulation such as increased viscosity of the blood and arterial narrowing. This increases the work of the heart to the extent that when a person comes from a warm room to a cooler outdoor environment the subsequent rise in cardiac workload and oxygen consumption could trigger an acute coronary syndrome. However, as we live in the glorious Mediterranean climate of southern Spain shouldn’t we worry more about hot weather episodes than cold ones? Perhaps not. Findings reported in The Lancet last year indicate that cold weather causes 20 times as many deaths as hot weather. Interestingly, the research showed that it is moderate changes in weather rather than extreme cold or hot spells that lead to the increased deaths. And even more pertinent to us is work from Adrien Barnett and colleagues showing that
128
an increase in coronary events was markedly greater when the temperature dropped in countries with warmer temperatures than in colder ones. This might be because indoor heating is less effective in warmer climes and that dress attire is less appropriate when people are used to the warmth. Women, especially those above age 60, were more at risk than men. As a possible explanation for this gender difference, the researchers cite another study showing that women in warmer climes were less likely to wear trousers in winter than those from colder ones. So, let’s not be complacent living in this wonderful climate of the Costa del Sol and remember that, as the temperature drops with the advent of winter, we too need to take appropriate measures. Now where did I put my jeans? Rachel Garrod PhD MSc is a physiotherapy lecturer and stop smoking counsellor Tel. Bringing Hollywood Flair TO THE SERVICED OFFICE BUSINESS
The co-working phenomenon has a glamorous new protagonist on the Costa del Sol. The first of 50 Our//Space co-working spaces is scheduled to open on Marbella’s Golden Mile in January, followed by Dubai, Miami, Birmingham and New York. Our//Space has teamed up with Hollywood production designer Carlos Barbosa “to create inspirational interiors which will make going to work a pleasure and foster connections between people and nature”. Barbosa was Emmy-nominated for his work as production designer on the global TV hit “24”, has also been production designer on other TV shows including “Lost”, “CSI”, “Magic City”, “Aquarius” and the latest upcoming mini-series for Netflix titled “Godless”, and has worked as an architect with a high-end commercial and residential portfolio in Los Angeles, Miami, Jamaica and New Orleans. Collaborating with global-branded architects Todd Erlandson and March Studios (L’Oreal, HBO, Adidas, Sassoon, Ridley Scott, VICE and Disney among others) they looked at “how much our physical, mental and even spiritual wellbeing relies on our relationship to the natural world”. The co-working space incorporates natural elements including water features and vertical gardens, “in a sophisticated and subtle manner, using natural colours, materials and lighting to create spaces which feel welcoming, inclusive, warm, and inspiring”.
132
According to Our//Space, “In order to be successful and sustainable, we must reconnect to ourselves and remain true to our biology, rooted in nature. Our//Space has created an environment that doesn’t feel like it is only about work, but one which considers, and is mindful of, all aspects of our life. A holistic environment that promotes the balancing of the self through activities for the body (health + fitness), for the mind (intellect + work) and for the spirit (emotional + spiritual). Our//Space belongs to all of us. The collective identity is greater than the corporate identity. Every person, space and interaction matters. This humanistic approach creates real harmony and balance, making us feel complete, inspired and energised to be our best selves.” Adds CEO Kevan Halliwell, “This is the serviced office 3.0. We know that running a successful business is so much more than simply having an office space. Millennials are driving a massive shift in the way we work, wanting a place where they can feel inspired and access a network of like-minded professionals and options to relax, enjoy and learn in their workplace.” With its high-design work environments, cutting-edge technology and lifestylesavvy services and amenities, the new initiative is set to offer a different kind of office space and one the team hopes will create “the perfect place for creativity, productivity and inspiration”. A first month free promotion is available: www.ourspace.work

So what qualifies Deborah Matthews from I Go Shop 4 You as a personal retail consultant? “I started my working life many, many years ago in a Greekowned hairdressing salon very close to London. I adored trends and fashion, and working in the hairdressing industry enabled me to indulge my love of mixing the everyday with the unusual and coming up with something innovative, emotive and stylish. “As I grew up my interest blossomed. I moved from hairdressing to more sales and people-orientated roles working for Harvey Nichols in London, British Telecom and Nestle in York. news THE GOLF COMPANY
New Academy Concept in Milano The Golf Company will be building and installing the next Philippe Allain’s Stadium academy in the Barlassina Country Club in Milano. Philippe Allain started collaborating with The Golf Company when he established his first academy in El Campanario Golf & Country House on the Costa del Sol. He implemented the exclusive The Stadium programme for children and has enjoyed great success since then. The Stadium is a complete short game practice area that doubles as a multipurpose skill zone. The design enables elite players to have effective practice, while the next generation of golfers who are new to the game can learn and excel with a fun and creative approach to golf. According to The Golf Company, “A team of experts developed comprehensive protocols in order to systematically acquire the different physiological, mental, bio-mechanical and technical competences.” Among them: Christian Marquardt (neuro-scientist and inventor of the SAM PuttLab) and Loic Gambardela (a movement optimisation expert and TPI board member). The company has received other requests to install The Stadium in golf clubs and golf academies in Switzerland, Morocco, Torino and London. www.thegolfcompany.es
THE ART CLUB
Welcoming Atmosphere for Artists in San Pedro The Art Club in San Pedro de Alcántara raised €1,500 for charity when it opened its doors to the community in December with an evening of cheese, wine and light entertainment. Members released their own artwork for sale in aid of Fundación Cudeca and La Campana Food Bank. “We are proud to be able to give something back to the community each year,” said founding club member Susan Seed, “but it also gives us a good excuse to invite family, friends and neighbours to join us and enjoy all that we’ve achieved.” According to Susan, “The Art Club was set up to provide the opportunity for painters and artists to practise and enhance their skills in a friendly atmosphere. We very much operate with an open-door policy and welcome complete novices as well as more accomplished artists.” It is a non-profit organisation with a variety of workshops running continually, including monthly “paint and sip” evenings plus weekly life-drawing classes. HEART4HOMES
Healthy Lifestyles with The Home Whisperer Toon Roijers discovered his spiritual gifts after 20 years working in real estate in the Netherlands. His numerous trips, courses and meetings helped him to understand and develop these gifts and now – a holistic broker known as “The Home Whisperer” – Toon helps people to raise their awareness of healthy living. “Buying a house is not the same as finding a home,” he says. “A property is so much more than just walls and a roof. It has energies that can attract or in fact upset you. I help people choose the right house in which they can also really feel at home.” Using a divining rod, he can demonstrate the course of life energy (Chi) running through a property. Not only can he feel it, he says, but he can even neutralise it. “My approach is to match people and the property.” During his years as a realtor in the Netherlands, Toon could often not understand why one property would sell quickly and another not, but now he feels he knows the answer. “A property may appear to be beautiful, but if the energy radiated by the house isn’t conducive to the occupant(s) it can considerably disrupt the happiness of the inhabitants. It may sound a little strange but a property and a person can take over each other’s energies, weaken them but also strengthen them. Energies are everywhere and, subconsciously, they affect our well-being.” Tel. (+34) 617 778 227 / (+31) 653 996 617 / info@heart4homes.net / www.heart4homes.net

Q&A COUNSELLING
Encouraging Positive Steps Quirien Schreurs was interested in healthcare and people from an early age, and after studying in the Netherlands (as a nurse) and Australia (social worker) he finished his psychology masters in Spain. “Then I decided to take the plunge and follow my dreams and start my own business: Q&A Counselling.” So what is counselling? According to Quirien, it is “a conversation or a series of conversations between counsellor and client. Counselling focuses on specific problems such as fear of failure, burnout, stress, work-related challenges, dealing with grief and not handling life in a functional way. To encourage you to take positive steps to resolve these issues.” He combines his knowledge of the body, mind and social aspects to provide a personalised approach to a person’s problem. “As counsellor I will help you to find the answers to your questions. I help you take back control of your own life, and live a happier, more stress-free, and more confident life.” Tel. (+31) 634 440 538 / (+34) 654 963 106 / www.qacounseling.com
