ARCHITECT STUDIO For over a decade UDesign have collaborated with many of the country’s leading architects on high-end luxury projects in some of the most prestigious addresses in Europe including La Zagaleta Marbella, Verbier (Switzerland) and most recently, Eaton Square London. In January 2016, the UDesign architect studio was formed with the intention of creating high-end luxury residential homes that are not only aesthetically stylish and contemporary on the outside, but also ooze sophistication and quality on the inside. This combination of both, the creative and the technical, define us as a very unique and innovative architectural studio as the architects and interior designer work together in the same company. Our design process begins from the inside out, focusing firstly on the interior spaces and their purpose to establish the best possible living environment while carefully considering exterior views, light, spatial planning and functionality. Given that Marbella boasts one of the best climates in Europe, we endeavour to create the feeling of an indoor/outdoor living experience, where the terrace is a natural extension of the lounge, creating spaces which uplift the spirit and stimulate the senses. Making a certain demographic behemoth “great again” has become something of a ubiquitous catchcry (and baseball cap slogan) in recent months. At Home & Lifestyle Magazine we have absolutely no intention of immersing ourselves in the turbulent waters of international politics, but we are much more comfortable with any issues related to home décor. So we are quite happy to note that, when it comes to our renowned Mediterranean lifestyle, “The Great Outdoors” has provided unwavering joy since the first modern-day foreign residents discovered the area’s diverse attractions and alluring charms last century. And – if anything – it just gets greater here in southern Spain. In short, there is never any need to put the Great back into The Outdoors on the Coast: it always has been, and it will indubitably remain that way for the foreseeable future. As winter eases into spring, we are able to spend even more time in our gardens and on our terraces, and it’s important that these outdoor spaces are well prepared for the new season. With that in mind, we dedicate our main “Décor & Design” section this issue to latest trends in outdoor furniture, shade sails, pergolas, roofing systems and fire pits – featuring a diverse array of styles from hippy-chic to custom-made versatility. These days, outdoor living tends to merge seamlessly into the indoor areas, so we also focus on other key living areas in the home and check out some innovative ideas related to fabrics, lighting, wallpaper and flooring to complement and enhance the overall look of our villas and apartments. All, of course, with the aim of making the outdoors even greater – for our comfort, our pleasure, our relaxation and the delight of our visiting friends and family. Finally, some readers might notice that this is our 50th edition. Bearing in mind that the oldest magazine in the world still in publication is believed to be The Scots Magazine (originally published in 1739), it might seem a little over-indulgent to be mentioning our own minimilestone but we plan to permit ourselves a modest celebration anyway. Any excuse to enjoy The Great Outdoors with a splendid al fresco lunch by the sea.

FIRST PERSON
KEEPING COOL
INNOVATIVE SHADE AS AN ART FORM
INTERVIEW WITH DIDIER DEWYN FROM ACOOLA
What are the various products Acoola (formerly TipTopShade) has to offer? Acoola positions itself as a shade solutions provider, rather than as a vendor of mere products. Indeed, most of our clients do not contact us to buy an off-the-shelf shade they saw somewhere, but they expect and get from us inspiration, ideas and a shade solution plan that transforms their unprotected terrace, garden, patio or roof into an additional outdoor lounging area that they can use all year round. It regularly happens that someone enquires for a triangle shade sail (because their neighbour has it and it looks cool) but happily ends up with a stylish retractable awning with vertical valence (because from our site visit and tripod simulation it appeared that the sun would continue to shine under a traditional sail in the afternoon). So, besides the look, we value above all function! Flexibility is another important aspect when designing a shade solution. Ideally you want a system that shades only when needed, and otherwise has a minimal structural impact or ideally can be removed when not used during winter, with heavy rains, etc. Acoola’s solutions typically consist of shade sails, awnings and bioclimatic pergolas. It is the only provider on the Costa del Sol that offers the combination of this trio in the premium segment, and is official dealer of high quality European brands such as: Sunsquare and Soliday for automatic and retractable shade sails; Umbrosa for umbrellas and fixed shade sails; Markilux for awning systems and screens; and Brustor for pergolas. Of course, our patrons also enjoy their systems in the evening, and therefore we offer practical add-ons like design LED lights, bioethanol fireplaces and infrared heaters to create light, warmth and above all atmosphere. What are the benefits of shade sails? Shade sails have been Acoola’s signature since its inception in Marbella now almost 10 years ago, and are inspired by the nautical design of sailing yachts. They are elegant and light to look at, versatile to install, and you can create and combine almost unlimited forms, shapes and angles. Shade sails especially come in very useful for those hard to cover spots, are highly wind resistant since they move with the wind, and are great to bridge big surface areas where other solutions like awnings fall too short. It is no wonder that architects, designers and renowned beach clubs and resorts like Ocean Club, Puro Beach, Hoteles Playa Globales and Sisu Boutique Hotel use the systems from Acoola. Also private residences benefit from shade sails, since the choices of waterproof, high UV resistant, translucent sail fabrics and the materials of the poles – powder-coated steel, marine grade stainless steel, aluminium or wood – allow us to create a truly unique design that can uplift the whole premises into a wonderful Zen area. Tell us about some of your most interesting projects… Acoola has a wide clientele spread all over the Costa del Sol from Málaga to Gibraltar that includes private (second) residents, designers, architects and hospitality businesses, with one thing in common: wanting to squeeze the most out of their valuable external square metres! Where possible, we prefer simple and clean-cut solutions and each project, no matter the size or budget, is an enjoyable challenge. We focus on optimal qualityfor-budget ratios and therefore our solutions are affordable for everyone who is willing to invest in a quality shade solution that will last for years. However, there are always projects that stand out, albeit for the mere size and scope of the areas to cover. In this respect our Ocean Club project is a real eye-catcher. Over the years, we have developed an excellent understanding of what both management and customers want, and our combination of fixed and automatic
38

retractable sails shading the large outdoor restaurant area is exemplary of the elegant yet functional solutions we add. What after sales service do you offer? Acoola always goes the extra mile for its clients. We keep a close and continuous relationship – if customers like it that way, of course – during the life cycle of the solution, which can last over a decade with a high-quality shade. For this purpose a Carefree Maintenance Package is offered as an option, and this entails follow-up of the system across the seasons with maintenance, take-off and take-on, cleaning of the structures and storage of the shade sails. For other systems, regular checks are carried out, especially during winter, when a lot of clients are not in the region and it can rain and blow very hard, like we experienced this winter with the floods. Of course, when there is an imminent problem during high season, it is being solved right away and if possible on the spot, even if it means that we have to put up a temporary solution until spare parts have arrived. At our well-equipped warehouse, we have a large stock of replacement sails, so our clients can keep their heads cool even during the hottest of times. Included in the service package and highly appreciated, I must say. Tell us more about the pergolas that you offer and their technology? At the beginning of 2016, we decided to add bioclimatic pergolas to our product range. This ground-breaking concept in patio covers – which regulates the temperature and ventilation of your patio naturally while protecting you from the sun and bad weather – originates from western Europe where the climate is colder yet people are desperately seeking to extend their indoor living to the outdoors. Brustor, the Belgian premium brand for awnings, has been developing its sleek design aluminium pergolas from the very start, and its systems have been tested with thousands of installations in the most severe climates across Europe. Highly technology driven, Brustor now is also the first on the market with a fully convertible pergola, whereby the roof louvers not only rotate in a 150-degree position like the other models, but also can slide completely to one side, opening up the whole roof for those starry evenings or to welcome the warming sunlight in between seasons. Acoola demonstrated the versatility of this new model during the Estepona Home Fair, where it was very well received by visitors. What we like most about the Brustor pergolas is the seamless integration of the modules with the surrounding architecture and the fact that they are endlessly accessorisable: according to each budget, a client can start with a basic open module, and then afterwards, without any visible alteration, integrate sliding glass doors or the popular curtains to close the sides, add automatic wind and bug screens that are already built-in in the frame, put up an infrared heater, LED lighting, etc… However, irrespective of the specific model one chooses, the key reasons for opting for a pergola remain the same: the motorised remote controlled blades for opening the roof when and where you want, the protection from rain with built-in rainwater drainage gutters and wind resistance up to 165 km/h, the natural temperature regulation and ventilation, avoiding the greenhouse feel, and last but not least the easy maintenance, just using plain water from below. ADDING WARMTH AND AMBIENCE TO YOUR HOME INTERVIEW WITH GREGORY BYNERT FROM UNIQUE FIRES
Before This year Unique Fires are celebrating their 10th anniversary, an excellent reason for Home & Lifestyle Magazine to meet up with owner Gregory Bynert to find out more about the secret to their decade-long success… Why do you think Unique Fires has stood the test of time here on the Coast? I believe it is our efficiency, professionalism, attention to detail and quality of workmanship. As we have been working on the Coast for many years, we understand what our customers expect and require. We deliver an all-round service every time, giving us the good name that we have become famous for. At Unique Fires, is there a certain type of fireplace that seems to be the more popular on the Costa del Sol? No… it is varied because it depends very much on individual needs. For example, if you need a fireplace to produce lots of heat and you have a chimney, then a wood burner would be an obvious choice. However, if you want a fire just for aesthetic reasons, because perhaps you have under-floor heating
44
installed, then a bioethanol or electric fire might be a better option for you. When buying a new fireplace, what do you need to take into consideration? When we visit the home to carry out a survey, we listen to what the customer would like and then work out whether it is feasible. It goes without saying that if somebody wants a wood or gas burner but there are no external walls, it would not be a possible option but we always find a solution to a problem one way or another! During the warmer months, what kind of patio heaters are available? There are some really beautiful and effective options for patio heaters available. From fire pits to bioethanol table-top heaters and four-sided glass or metal gas heaters… there is a multitude of options available. Unique Fires Tel. Pool and garden design and construction are major projects and owners naturally proceed with caution, taking time to select reputable contractors, designers and architects to complete these projects. Working with one company with expertise in both pools and gardens reduces the stress and complexity – it’s simply easier to liaise with one reliable expert who is singularly accountable for logistics and delivery. The garden and pool should be completed together, so that the design, architecture and landscape work in harmony, each element complementing the other. Atlas Pool, Atlas Garden and Atlas Build are technical experts in their distinctly different fields, who unite as Atlas Group to deliver the highest quality builds for customers. Atlas Group has a reputation for achieving impressive results with the clever use of materials, ensuring your family home, pool and garden are an expression of your lifestyle and personality. Atlas Pool guides customers through the myriad of choices homeowners make when selecting and building their pool. One of the key choices is the pool finish. HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR POOL FINISH Many people mistakenly believe that pool finish is primarily responsible for the colour of the pool, but this isn’t true. The colour of your pool is affected by the size, shape and depth of the pool but, even more importantly, the pool surrounds. Colour is primarily dictated by light, so the built and natural environment around the pool can enhance or detract from its colour and beauty. When contractors work together on the home, garden and pool, they can create ideal surrounds for your natural lagoon or your glassy blue infinity pool, creating light, shade and reflection to enhance the colour and desired stylistic effect of your pool. So what should you consider when you are choosing your pool finish? Texture is important; a non-slip, stain-resistant surface is safe and practical. Clearly, you want to choose a pool finish which aligns with the look you want to achieve. Finally, the pool finish will determine how long your pool will last and what it will cost in future maintenance and repair.

PEBBLETEC – THE NATURAL CHOICE FOR POOLS THAT LAST For those who prefer pure, natural materials, PebbleTec is the most durable and flexible pool finish available. Sourced from premium quarries around the world, PebbleTec is a natural pebble surface, with a deep, rich variety of colours, bonded with white cement and innovative additives. The system was developed over 30 years ago and is in use in Europe and also America where over 30,000 pools each year are finished with PebbleTec. PebbleTec is also a sustainable choice; there are no manufacturing processes involved, so no polluting bi-products or emissions are produced. The mining and extraction methods are licensed and controlled by environmental agencies and the pebble is graded, rinsed and simply used in its natural state. In spite of its popularity and its use in the world’s greatest pools, Atlas Pools is the only company on the Costa del Sol who are skilled and licensed in the use of PebbleTec. Atlas Pools will apply your chosen pebble and cement mixture by pump or manually to the interior surface of the pool. Specialised equipment is used to wash and expose the top layer of pebble, ensuring a beautiful, uniform finish. The PebbleTec finish will outlive other pools on the Costa del Sol; while your neighbour is re-grouting their tiled pool, re-painting the pool coping or repairing cracks and bubbles in their fibreglass pool finish, you will be relaxing by your impeccable PebbleTec finished pool for many years to come. PebbleTec is available in a wide variety of colours, from golden tones to minty green and jade. You can choose the original earthy texture of PebbleTec, or the refined pebble texture of PebbleSheen or the smooth aggregate PebbleFina.

FANTASTIC FLOORS
TAKE TO THE FLOOR Flooring is often an oversight when trying to enhance the look and feel of a room but it plays an extremely important role. Apart from aesthetic beauty, the ideal flooring depends on the type of room and how much traffic the floor needs to endure – as well as the available budget of course. These days there are many more options on the market, from wooden, laminated, tiled, marble and stone to “new-wave” surfaces such as micro-cement and resin.

How long have you been in the carpet industry? I have been in the industry for 40 years. Back in my native country of Belgium I started as a salesman at the famous Grutman company, with seven carpet galleries in Belgium and two in Spain. Fifteen years ago I moved to Spain, where I joined Francine Grutman’s Marbella team. When Francine retired seven years ago, I took the opportunity of starting my own carpet business at the same address in Marbella. Have you seen many changes within the carpet industry over the years? The most important changes in carpets are in modern collections. They follow the latest interior trends in style, patterns, colours, materials and structures. Every year I discover and acquire the latest creations, to be the first one to offer the most exclusive collections in Spain. You have a large variety of rugs… How do you choose your selection? Buying carpets as an importer has changed a lot. There was a time when you would have to travel the world to meet the master weavers and carpet companies to see the manufacturing in process, the product and the environment in which the weavers worked. But over the last 20 years, with the introduction of the internet, the need to travel has diminished. Today carpet manufactures send agents to see me with samples. Also, the emphasis in the carpet industry has completely shifted to Europe, with the finest annual carpet fairs being the likes of Domotex in Germany. What do your clients need to know before selecting a carpet? If you decide to buy your carpet at Marbella Carpets, there are several personal reflections to consider before you decide: • Your own sense of style… YOU have your own personal taste, it’s not up to the salesman. You are going to be living with the rug. Think about if your style is traditional, contemporary or transitional. • If the rug matches the room’s décor… Choose a rug that complements the colours of your room. • The size of the rug… It is important to take the room measurements with you when you go rug shopping. • The pattern… If you are investing a lot of money in a rug, it’s best to consider a timeless pattern like those used in antique rugs – or vintage collections. • Your lifestyle… Not every rug suits every lifestyle, so it is important to consider how you plan to live in the space the rug will occupy. • How the rug feels… One of the primary reasons my clients buy rugs is for a sensation of cosiness when walking around with bare feet, even in a warm part of the world like the Costa del Sol. Do you have any new collections this year at Marbella Carpets? We have the “Erased” collection, which is the successor to the ”Vintage” collection. A small family manufacturer from the south of India has chosen Marbella Carpets to be the sole dealer in Europe. The collection comprises completely hand-woven carpets in wool and silk, in earthy tones. We also have exclusivity in Spain for Guy Laroche, a leading company in designer carpets with high quality materials but at affordable prices. In conclusion… I would like to invite readers to visit my carpet gallery, where a team of professionals will welcome you with a good coffee or some fresh drinks, and accompany you in your search for the perfect match. Without any compromise, going to your house for advice and measuring, and offering a trial with some of your selected carpets. If your Spanish is a problem, we speak English, German, French, Dutch and Russian. Marbella Carpets Centro Comercial Casablanca, Golden Mile, Marbella Tel. CREATING AN ECO-FRIENDLY GARDEN
S
EC O
NATURE & LIFE
By Ali a Bab
An eco-friendly garden is all about designing with nature and the environment in mind. Learn how to create a functional garden that uses native plants, conserves water and energy, minimises or eliminates the use of chemical fertilisers, pesticides and herbicides, recycles green garden wastes, and provides a valuable habitat for birds, butterflies, lady bugs and other animals. Eco-friendly gardens save money, time and the environment by protecting clean water, creating habitat and preventing invasive species from taking over a landscape. The first thing to do, of course, is to make sure that you have good soil and foundation; without that, plants, however strong, will not do well. Other key factors… • Limit your use of lawn fertilisers, herbicides, and insecticides. • Reduce the size of your lawn by creating beds of shrubs and perennials. These landscape beds allow water to penetrate the soil and recharge groundwater. You can also reduce your need for herbicides by mowing your grass at three to four inches (seven to 10 centimetres). High mowing discourages weeds because higher grass shades out weeds. • Use natural fertilisers and time it right. Use compost or slow-release fertiliser on lawn areas, as they release nutrients slowly. Leave grass clippings on your lawn to compost naturally if you can; otherwise put them into a composter. Avoid fertilising your lawn before a heavy rain to prevent run-off of excess fertiliser. Sweep fertiliser off any paved areas and rinse spreaders on the lawn so that fertiliser can be absorbed by the grass rather than lost to run-off.
114
• Don’t use pavement but rather permeable “hard-scaping”. For decks, patios and pathways, check out porous paving options that allow water to soak into the ground, such as wood, stone, loose bricks and paving blocks. You can also install green roofs on your garden sheds or roofs next to solar panels. PLANT TREES When it rains, trees act like giant umbrellas, intercepting rainfall in their canopies by reducing the amount of water that goes into storm drains. Their deep roots allow rainwater to infiltrate back into the soil where it can be used by plants. WATER WISELY Avoid overwatering lawns and use drip irrigation in garden beds to put water where it is needed, at the roots, and reduce evaporation. Improve your soil with compost, which holds moisture, and use natural, dye-free mulch in planting beds. Plant your garden when less water is needed – early spring and autumn are the best times to plant. Avoid planting during a drought when you have to water more. Coffee rounds are a good source of nitrates; obtain them from your friendly café, which will have a lot more than you. Use garlic spray. Fill a spray bottle with water, chop four or five peeled garlic cloves finely and drop them into the bottle. Shake well, let it sit for one week and then spray on the top and bottom of the plant leaves. Bugs hate the smell. By thinking of the environment, it is easy to encourage small animals and insects to visit and also enjoy your garden. Remember that they are also vital for a good balance.

BUYING PROPERTY TO RENOVATE IN MARBELLA
IN A MARKET STRONGER THAN EVER By Mike Pearson
It’s been a long wait but finally the property market is slowly but surely moving forward in a positive way. Motion creates emotion, as they say, and there is a feeling that Marbella – together with many other parts of the Coast – is back in vogue, and particularly the market of buying old properties in good locations for renovation. The developers are back in full force and it’s plain to see, with old villas snapped up at bargain prices, totally modernised and put back on the market again for huge sums of profit. They are catering to turn-key clients who want nothing to do with the hassle of purchasing, planning and building their dream homes. They just want to turn the key and move in, and who can blame them for paying a large premium for the privilege of not having the stress involved in renovation projects. It would seem that the name of the game is location, orientation and ready-forrenovation, and now there are companies on the southern Spanish coast that package all of this. From targeting the best locations with old buildings and introducing the product to a prospective buyer on clever 3Ds to handing the client total control over the project under the direction of a project manager, as well as teams of companies needed to finish a total renovation… These companies have people working under one roof and in one location, with all products at hand. Not many companies are suited to do this, as you need a lot of space for each individual company to provide an exhibition area. One of the leaders in this buyproperty-to-renovate market is The Design Center (also known as Marmorin), which is situated opposite Marbella Club Hotel. In all my time in southern Spain, I don’t ever remember seeing such a set up. It’s a huge space with all the elements, plus independent companies and specialists working together on a daily basis. I know of one place similar, but it’s based in San Francisco. There is so much to talk about so I will keep it simple… The Design Center gives power to the turn-key investor to do their own developments with the option of keeping the final project for themselves or putting it back on the market. They call it, “Power to the Consumer”.

Any prospective client can choose from a selection of hand-picked properties that fit the criteria of location and orientation; once a property has been selected for a project, the in-house 3D department team and a selected architect take over. In this particular case when I was at the studio, it was renowned architect Pablo Villarroel of Villarroel Torrico Arquitectos. As most readers are probably aware, the name Villarroel – specifically Pablo’s father Melvin – is synonymous with some of our beloved Coast’s landmark developments, including the Puente Romano and Marbella Club Hotels. We have had a number of established and well respected architects visit us at the centre and we will continue to welcome them as we can offer the perfect environment for architects to work. It was very impressive to sit and watch the client operating the glass windows and doors that were actually going into his project. He moved along to meet with all the other companies involved, providing physical elements such as Italian ceramics and magnificent large stone bathtubs and sinks that he had chosen. The discussions were coordinated with lighting specialist David Hidalgo, one of Spain’s most popular lighting designers, with leading brand glass doors and window systems offered by Marbeglass, latest trends in Italian ceramics from Cerafino, award-winning landscapists Adarve, renowned interior designer Nezha Kanouni, cutting-edge home automation systems from Domosat, and Agata Bath Design designer baths. And the best part is that it is all done under one roof… Everything and everyone needed to carry out a building project on time and on budget. As I mentioned previously, they say that motion creates emotion – and there was plenty of that happening in this design centre. LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL By John Graham
We are coming to the end of the first quarter of 2017, which is a good time to take a look at the state of the property market on the Costa del Sol. To establish how the market is doing we need to compare data from 2016, 2015 and the peak sales of 2007. Regarding property on the Costa del Sol, latest figures show that sales have got off to a good start and that 2016 property sales were up on 2015, so the year-on-year figures continue to grow consistently – which is excellent news. Regarding property prices, on average today’s prices on the Costa del Sol are around 46 per cent below the peak of 2007, but some experts concede that properties 10 years ago were over-priced, so today’s buyers are being offered properties at much more realistic prices. Compared with the current national market, property prices on the Costa del Sol have increased above the national average – in prime locations but still competitive. In 2017, it will be just as important for property prices to remain good value on the Coast, so that buyers continue to be attracted to the area and the increase in year-on-year sales is consolidated. The demographics of property buyers on the Costa del Sol are always changing. Today UK buyers still hold on to the number one spot, in spite of Brexit, but the Russian market has dropped considerably and Scandinavian buyers have now filled the void.
We are also seeing an increase in interest from the Far East, China and India. These are massive markets and any percentage share will have a positive impact on property sales on the Costa del Sol in 2017. The Spanish “Golden Visa” is helping to create strong interest, together with an increase in direct flights from India, China and Hong Kong to Madrid. These can be conveniently followed by a short flight or high-speed AVE train journey to Málaga. In general, developers and constructors of new build and refurbished properties are enjoying great success in sales all along the Coast, and this trend looks like continuing throughout 2017. The quality of new build and refurbished properties has improved, due in part to increased competition. Architects and interior designers continue to raise the bar in design and specifications – and buyers in 2017 will be spoilt for choice. Tourism is also essential for the property industry. A high level of tourism usually equates to higher property sales. In that respect 2016 was a record year and experts are predicting another boom year in 2017. So let the good times roll for property sales on the Costa del Sol in 2017. John Graham is a senior surveyor and property investment advisor. Tel. 657 337 477 / (+ 44) 203 2900 983 / gk.ipad@me.com

The three key cornerstones of Casas & Reformas’ identity highlight why the company has enjoyed such success in recent years. They are, quite simply (but importantly), quality, commitment and customer service. Casas & Reformas has been completing projects in Spain for more than 15 years but over the past five years – in the midst of the Spanish recession and in a demanding business sector – the company’s solvency has enabled it to move to a whole new level, recognised as the flagship Spanish-Scandinavian construction company on the Costa del Sol. The values its team bring to their work – every day and for each project, no matter what size – have established them as the leading building project managers for any kind of renovation work, refurbishment or new construction. Casas & Reformas’ client base is mainly Scandinavian but this is continuing to expand with customers from all around the world. The company’s international professionals and experts speak Swedish, English, Finnish, Danish, Russian, French and Spanish, with Robert Karlsson from Sweden the latest to join the team as client relations manager. They also have a close collaboration with interior designers, engineers, sub-contractors, suppliers and architects, including AMES Arquitectos. One of Casas & Reformas’ specific areas of specialisation is full refurbishment
After
projects, transforming traditional Andalucian-style properties into modern homes with the highest quality materials and always ensuring maximum convenience and comfort for the client. After completing more than 300 projects, they are proud to say, “Our experience and knowledge are the basis for the excellence that we strive for in the delivery of our projects.” One of the main pillars of projects for clients who live abroad is communication, and to that end Casas & Reformas maintains a steady flow of communication with clients throughout the process: during design, choice of materials and quality control of the works. In addition to the construction work itself, Casas & Reformas is closely involved with all the associated services, from consultancy on building plots, drafting of projects and technical reports to the final decoration of the home. Furthermore, if the client’s ultimate objective after their project is completed is to sell, Casas & Reformas works with the Costa del Sol’s main real estate agencies. Tel. Located in one of the Costa del Sol’s most exclusive areas, not far from the luxurious Finca Cortesín hotel and golf resort, the villa featured here offers views of the Mediterranean Sea, Gibraltar and northern African coast that effectively become a visual extension of the home. The three-storey villa also takes full advantage of the views and plot with a series of special features. Access for people and cars is through the lower level to a patio that combines the main entrance and multiple-vehicle garage. The home is connected vertically by a designer lift and stairs, highlighted by a waterfall and lighting centrepiece. The lower floor opens out to the surrounding landscape, offering 180-degree views to the sea and comprising a central, doubleheight area that represents the heart of the home and merges the interior space with the outdoors. According to architect Enrique Cacopardo, the project was inspired by a combination of levels and shadows in a setting of incomparable beauty, expanding visually into the natural light and landscape. “As one of the vital elements in nature, water plays a key role in the architecture, creating an axis of symmetry between the north and south of the home and opening out to the endless Mediterranean Sea.” Extending over 521 square metres of built area, plus porches and terraces, the home includes a gymnasium, spa, home cinema room, three-car garage and service area in the basement, while the lower floor comprises a lounge area, dining room and kitchen, connected to spacious terraces and a garden, designer pool and chill-out pergola, as well as an en suite bedroom. Two bedrooms on the upper floor are connected by a bridge that crosses the central part of the home, with the master bedroom including a dressing room and offering magnificent views over the coastline. The new Mirador del Paraiso project is an exclusive residential complex situated in the Benahavís area, a short drive from Puerto Banús and close to such popular golf courses as Atalaya, El Paraíso, Capanes and Marbella Country Club. At a price of €1,500,000, this complex extends over more than 123,000 square metres and enables residents to enjoy beautiful nature and the superb Mediterranean climate. In addition, it is a gated community with 24-hour security, and comprises luxury villas and modern apartments. All villas have panoramic views to the golf courses, mountains and sea. This magnificent project is highlighted by the construction of two independent contemporary villas with stunning views to the Mediterranean Sea, verdant golf fairways and Gibraltar. The villas are designed to become your ideal home: spacious, with plenty of natural light and built using materials of the finest quality. It will be a wonderfully modern project with under-floor heating, energy-saving installations and spectacular design. The main idea of the project is to take advantage of the great panoramic views and sunny climate that distinguish this area.
Each villa has a plot of 800 square metres and built area of 300 square metres, four spacious bedrooms of 30 square metres, four stylish bathrooms, a large and cosy living room, a fully-equipped kitchen, two attractive terraces, a porch, a storage room, a garage for two cars, a laundry room and a gym. The villas have their own swimming pool and tropical garden, providing picturesque and unique views. As the developers note, “We provide a guarantee to our clients that there is no other project that could offer you the same quality, price and location. Tell us about your showroom in Centro Plaza… It is a reflection of our own style – of our journeys. We offer small quantities, exclusivity and unique pieces. A touch of elegance to suit our clientele, at affordable prices. We try to change the showroom every month, so whenever people walk in they will always find something new. Some new collections have just arrived… what can we expect to find? They follow our style, with a touch of ethnicity, organic, not blingy but elegant pieces. A select range to help clients dress their home in a different way. This is what we hear from everyone: “We are different!” From where do you draw your inspiration? We visit a variety of fairs throughout the year, including Milan, Valencia and Paris, where we are always on the lookout for those rare pieces which we are well known for. However, updates from the sector, travelling, suppliers’ open days and close relationships with our main suppliers also provide me with inspiration and help me stay abreast of latest trends. How would you define your style? We create warm, cosy, personal, homely houses with loads of accessories. We use a lot of natural materials like wool, linen, wood and cotton in soft and earthy tones, while also mixing them with more trendy items. It is very important to adapt to the feel of a home, to the rooms, the walls, the floors, etc. – and of course the people who live there. By communicating with the client and showing them different possibilities and options, we can find that special style the client is looking for. What other services do you offer? We have the capacity of taking on a specific living area such as a bedroom, lounge or kitchen, for example, to a full house. We are not only a shop: we are interior designers and also have a wide range of curtains, rugs and interesting wallpapers. Another aspect to our business is home-staging. This service is in high demand at the moment as clients understand the importance of having a home that is designed in a way that makes it easier to rent out or sell. Right now, we are working on two retreat centres and a restaurant. They are completely different projects and budgets, but that is what makes this job challenging and fun… creating a beautiful and warm environment that fits the customer’s exact requirements. DESIGNING GOLF AREAS FOR YOUR HOME INTERVIEW WITH LOUIE BREHM FROM THE GOLF COMPANY
What services do The Golf Company offer and how is your team made up? The Golf Company is a full service golf construction company that focuses its attention equally on two distinct sectors: the residential sector where we build and create private golf areas for residential homes, and the commercial sector which comprises golf courses and golf practice facilities. After over 10 years in the industry we have developed a unique group of talented industry experts who share our vision for growing the game of golf. Our team is comprised of golf architects, professional tour coaches and certified PGA professionals, as well as championship course and synthetic constructors. Equally as important are our amazing team of installers who work hand in hand with the aforementioned group. They are true specialists and bring years of experience and expertise in the installation of synthetic turf surfaces for golf. Our team is not only highly qualified and trained, but collectively we aspire to improve. This I believe is the signature of our success and the reason why we have so many satisfied customers. We are fortunate to say that golf has brought us together: our passion is golf, our love is golf. Collectively we are 100 per cent dedicated to growing the game of golf. The diversity of our team is one of the factors that sets us apart in the golf industry. Tell us about where you have carried out some of your projects… We have actually been very fortunate over the years to have installed numerous projects around the world. My team and I have collaborated on two separate nine-hole
126
courses in France. We have also worked on a very unique six-hole practice facility designed by Nicklaus Design in Hong Kong, a three-hole practice facility in the Italian Alps, several Teeline projects in Dubai and private projects for the royal family of Morocco, as well as many projects both residential and commercial in the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, The Netherlands and Russia. Here in Spain, we have designed and built projects for the Madrid and Spanish Golf Federations, as well as many of the most prestigious clubs across the country, including Finca Cortesín, Las Brisas, Golf La Moraleja, El RACE, Real Club de Golf de Sevilla, Pineda... On a residential level we have been fortunate enough to work with a very wide spectrum of clients. They range from passionate golfers looking to practise at home, aspiring pros playing with national teams and leading international business figures with private golf holes in country properties to top global pro golfers. You have installed many putting greens for residential homes. Tell us more about how you go about doing this… We begin by working directly with the client to meet his or her personal desires and needs. Depending on the scope of the project, we incorporate as many technical aspects to the design as necessary to allow the client to have a true short game practice area in their home. We only work with the highest quality synthetic materials. This guarantees unsurpassed quality, a natural appearance and, most importantly, the most realistic golf experience with synthetic grass. Our outdoor and indoor putting greens are

made with the highest quality artificial turf in the industry, and are designed to meet the most demanding player expectations. Whether we are building a simple putting green or a complex golf hole, our focus once again is based on the game, performance of the product and customer satisfaction. This means quality designs, where ball reception and true ball roll are achieved to satisfy golfers of all levels. The Golf Company greens are built for golfers by golfers. How do you set about planning a commercial golf facility? We provide a complete synthetic golf installation package, from practice facilities to full courses. This includes design, preparation and planning, right up to the completed installation. Our experts assist in assessing the scope of the project, the land and location, and the viability of a facility and its capability to meet the needs of amateur and professional golfers alike. We project manage the complete golf course or facility, from construction start to finish. Our experts take the lead in providing modern-day options to the everevolving world of golf course construction. This also includes the integration and building of natural areas designed to work and function seamlessly with our synthetic products. Our focus, once again, is based on the game, the performance of the product, and the satisfaction of the end user. In conclusion… The Golf Company’s new presence on the Costa del Sol enables the industry and passionate golfers alike to benefit from our more than 10 years of experience dedicated to building the highest quality synthetic golf surfaces. Le Fils Vert - Maze Interior

Le Fils Vert - Korakot
Exhibitors, industry professionals and other visitors keen to stay abreast of latest trends in home décor and design were able to enjoy an upgraded trade experience at the Maison&Objet Paris show in January. As part of their objective to “broaden the fair’s professional audience while continuing to meet exhibitors’ expectations”, the organisers introduced several new initiatives in tune with “the rise of multichannel marketing”. In addition to the Inspirations Forum, this year’s Maison&Objet offered an overview of the season’s highlights with a What’s New! Exhibit, greater integration of fabrics and home textile brands into the “Cosy & Elegant” sectors, a specific focus on the “Kids” sector and enhanced synergy between the “Actuel” and “Influences” halls, as well as launching the Maison&Objet and More (MOM) platform: mom.maison-objet.com. The Rising Talent Awards – which “reveal tomorrow’s star lifestyle designers in a curated space” – honoured the United Kingdom. Commenting on the initiative, Sir John Sorrell, founder of the London Design Festival, London Design Biennale and Saturday Night Club Trust, said, “All over the world, design is increasingly recognised for its power to bring social change and economic growth. Design plays a vital role in the success of the UK’s creative industries. In fact, the UK has

the largest design sector in Europe and the second largest in the world. There is a global demand for British design. London’s design scene is unique and full of immensely talented people, from those already established to those starting out and growing in their creative professions. I have worked in the creative industries all my life – ever since I went to art school as a teenager – though I believe that everyone is born with creative instincts and that the opportunity to express your creativity should be a human right.” ELEGANT EXPLORATION The “Designer of the Year” at the January fair was Pierre Charpin, described by the organisers as an explorer at heart. “Whether he is designing a collection for Galerie Kréo, a line of vases for the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres, a series of ottomans for Ligne Roset or lamps for Wrong. London, Pierre Charpin keeps his eye for plastic arts and stamps his unique style on every piece he designs: formal simplicity, softened by curved lines and often highlighted by distinctive chromatic choices. Clean and sensual, elegant and warm, his creations instantly elicit an emotional response.” www.maison-objet.com

A Future Vision OF ROLLS-ROYCE
When creating the Rolls-Royce Vision Next 100 project, the famous motoring brand’s design team asked themselves a question. “How can we re-cast luxury for the next 100 years?” That initial question led to two others. “What will a Rolls-Royce owner expect of his or her Rolls-Royce in the coming decades?” and “How do we at Rolls-Royce today envision how we meet those expectations?” The answers can be found in Vision Next 100, “a truly revolutionary, highly authentic exploration of the future of luxury mobility (which) provides a fully authentic look into the potential demands and desires of the wealthy connoisseur of the future”. The end of production of the seventh-generation Phantom represented the completion of the first phase of the Rolls-Royce brand’s renaissance under BMW Group custodianship. “The success of Phantom, Ghost, Wraith and now Dawn serves as the foundation for a bold new chapter. Rolls-Royce intimately understands its patrons and their likely desires and motivations in the future. It understands that true luxury is deeply personal and that the hallmarks of every Rolls-Royce past and present are key to its future. The designers therefore distilled four key tenets that not only underpin the elegant solution that is the Rolls-Royce Vision Next 100 but epitomise the future of luxury mobility as a whole.” •The Personal Vision •The Effortless Journey •The Grand Sanctuary •The Grand Arrival
132
The first tenet is an example of several possible personal visions of a RollsRoyce of the future. “In the spirit of the great coach-built cars of the past, RollsRoyce will create the chassis of the future, hand-built from the most advanced materials and powered by a zero emissions powertrain. Advanced manufacturing technologies will enable customers to involve themselves even more in the design of the shape, size and silhouette of their personal Rolls-Royce vision. The future customer will commission his or her own concept. RollsRoyce will design and manufacture this personal vision of each customer and make every RollsRoyce a unique bespoke masterpiece.” Codenamed 103EX, this first “vision vehicle” from Rolls-Royce is described as presenting “an intriguing and aesthetically dynamic vision autonomous RollsRoyce experience, wrapped in a design that ensures a ‘Grand Sanctuary’ for its occupants and a ‘Grand Arrival’”. Explains Rolls-Royce Motor Cars director of design Giles Taylor, “With the Rolls-Royce Vision Next 100 we were mindful not to dwell on the past. We wanted to be as innovative as possible and at the same time transcend the design history of the marque. “The Rolls-Royce patron will continue to be a famous figure in the future. I envision that the Rolls-Royce Vision Next 100 will play a key role in these people’s lives, guiding and conveying them effortlessly through their life’s journey in an exquisite sanctuary where they can reflect in peace ahead of arriving in the grandest style.”

Home & Lifestyle Magazine continued its fashion collaboration with modelling agency Scouting Division in February, with a photo shoot featuring ultra-chic styles in Marbella. After previous shows at The Peninsula Paris Luxury Hotel and DoubleTree by Hilton Resort & Spa Reserva del Higuerón (in Benalmádena) the team moved to the iconic luxury setting of Hotel Los Monteros. Founded by entrepreneur Ignacio Coca, Los Monteros Spa & Golf Resort was inaugurated in 1962 with 35 rooms. Over the years, increasing demand led to it being enlarged on three occasions until it became a “Grand Luxury” hotel with 68 rooms, 20 luxury villas and more than 440 members of staff. It currently has 173 rooms, of which more than half are junior suites Celebrities who have been guests at the hotel include Queen Ingrid of Denmark, Michael Jackson, Julio Iglesias, Sean Connery, Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith. Los Monteros’s El Corzo (dating to 1963) was the first hotel restaurant in Spain to receive a Michelin star, and the hotel complex became a valuable asset in Spain’s burgeoning early tourism industry, comprising the hotel, Río Real golf course, tennis and equestrian clubs, and the La Cabane beach club. La Cabane was among the first to be inaugurated in the world, in 1965, and a pioneer on the Costa del Sol. The former king and queen of Spain, Juan Carlos and Sofia (at the time prince and princess) were among the first guests to visit the beach club. Today, the hotel also has a sumptuous spa with a full thermal circuit including seawater swimming pool heated at 33ºC, hydromassage beds, water jets, Finnish sauna, exfoliation room and aromatherapy shower, as well as a series of thermal treatments, body and facial therapies, and massages. In addition to the aforementioned El Corzo restaurant, Los Monteros offers diners an exquisite array of Mediterranean and international cuisine and gourmet snacks at Bar Azul by the swimming pool and the Flamingo restaurant dining room and summer terrace, where personalised menus are available and special dietary menus can be carefully planned by the hotel’s dietician. In addition to its renowned buffet, La Cabane is an excellent venue for special events by the sea, either indoors or outside around a spectacular pool with VIP facilities and service – or in the La Luna lounge area. American Dining in A Fun Ambience JACKS SMOKEHOUSE PUERTO BANÚS Restaurant photos by Gary Edwards (www.vpcreative.co.uk)
Situated on the frontline of the Puerto Banús marina, Jacks Smokehouse (previously named Jacks American Brasserie) has reopened its doors with a new name and a great updated look. Even though the menu is more or less the same as before with dishes that Jacks have become so famous for over the years, there are also some new additions. During our latest visit, the prices seemed extremely reasonable and the portion sizes were very generous. We were treated to large tempura king prawns, chicken jalapeño poppers and crab cake to start with, then a rack of ribs and Argentinean rib eye as a main course – all cooked beautifully with fabulous flavours. Our waiters were warmly friendly and attentive to our needs. The decoration is the most obvious change. There is now a glamorous large circular bar in the middle of the restaurant taking centre stage, where the
136
bartenders mix and shake their cocktails, with a rather ornate chandelier suspended above it. The cocktail menu is more interesting than most, with a slight twist on the traditional cocktails you normally come across, and all at reasonable prices under €10. To give the restaurant a chic and urban look, the walls have been stripped back to expose the natural brickwork and there are television screens mounted on them with pictures of Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley to give a true American feel. Every evening they have a DJ playing who is situated in his own booth at the rear of the restaurant to create an upbeat ambience while you dine. There are a variety of different tables for dining: whether you want a table in a private intimate corner, upstairs overlooking the marina or right in the middle of the action, there is one to suit everyone, making this venue ideal for a romantic evening or a large party.

As the name suggests, Jacks Smokehouse prides itself on its true smoky flavours, thanks to a newly-purchased smoker that gives the meat a deep and authentic American taste. As you would expect from an American restaurant, ribs and steaks are a main feature on the menu but there are also salads and pizza if you are not partial to meat. If you can fit in a dessert, they are all homemade and very indulgent. Jacks Smokehouse, Muelle Ribera Local 23-25, Puerto Banús Open every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner Tel. Authentic Thai Cuisine IN A PARADISIACAL SETTING Food photography by Gary Edwards (www.vpcreative.co.uk)
Top Thai Beach is a beachside extension to the popular and highly respected Top Thai restaurant in the busy Centro Plaza commercial centre in Nueva Andalucía. Situated in the luxurious Laguna Village commercial centre, Top Thai Beach offers indoor and al fresco dining on a large terrace near the beautiful Puro Beach pool, surrounded by palm trees and small winding canals. The chef is originally from Thailand and has been working for Top Thai for 15 years. His passion for cooking is obvious when you meet him. When asked which is his signature dish, he simply replies, “All of them!” We were treated to a vast array of different delights from beef satay, tempura prawns, spring rolls and fresh Vietnamese rolls to duck in a red curry with lychees and de-boned chunky pieces of fish cooked in a tangy sauce and intriguingly served within its own curved body. All the dishes were beautifully presented with plenty of colour and textures. The flavours were well-balanced and true to authentic Thai cooking. The restaurant has an open kitchen where you can observe the chef at work, cooking everything from scratch and thus ensuring the utmost in freshness. The service was efficient and the waiters, extremely friendly. We visited in the middle of February and it was impressively busy then – a testament to its already solid reputation. WINE NOTES
PROTOS FIRST
A BENCHMARK OF RIBERA DEL DUERO WINES By AJ Linn
It is interesting to compare the world’s most valuable brands, as rated by international agencies, with our preconceptions of what we think they should be. Although names like Google (Nº 1), Coca Cola and Apple are undoubted leaders across the commercial board, Microsoft, IBM, Amazon, Toyota, Samsung and McDonalds are not far behind, the dominance of tech items being overwhelming. Left to our own plans we may opt for San Miguel, Marlboro and pescaíto… Focusing on drinks, Spain’s Torres was voted in 2015 the “World’s Most Admired Wine” Brand, though who actually validated the nomination is not clear. For national listings, Mahou and Cruzcampo are top brands in the Spanish beer market, but when you look at something like the most popular Spanish wine brands in the huge US market Artadi and Marqués de Cáceres lead the pack. The oddest thing about such rankings is the absence of wines from what is generally considered to be the country’s second most important wine region, Ribera del Duero (literally “the banks of the Duero River”). Admittedly it is not as long established as La Rioja, but many serious wine aficionados rate it as producing Spain’s best. But brands? Well, everyone has heard of Vega Sicilia, misleadingly described as “Churchill’s favourite Spanish wine”, at a time when there were no other Spanish “name” wines on the British market, but how many of us can nominate, for example, three other brands from the region? More difficult than it might at first appear? There are tens of dozens of small wineries producing excellent varieties, and many of them cannot claim any level of recognition, let alone availability for purchase, more than 10 kilometres from their bodegas. It has been shown that wine was made in this area as long ago as a thousand years, but it was not until 1982 that the region was definitively classified and put under the control of a central entity, the Denominación de Origen Ribera del Duero. The term Ribera del Duero was actually the name of what is now the Protos winery, founded as such in 1927, and currently the most important bodega in the area. REBELLION BY LEADING BODEGAS However, as is often the case with Spain’s haphazardly-run committees that purport to lay down the law as far as what grapes can be used, and how much wine can be produced, in 2001 internal disputes relating to the way the region was governed caused a schism (as indeed it did in La Rioja as recently as last year). It was this very same bodega, Protos, that led a rebellion of 60 bodegas to confront the Consejo Regulador demanding major revisions to the way it imposed its will on the winemaking community. Balbás, Valduero and Pago de Carraovejas were among the other leading firms that stood shoulder to shoulder with Protos, and the confrontation resulted in the desired changes that today apply to the 200 or so bodegas that produce the region’s excellent wines. The inward-looking granddaddy of them all, Vega Sicilia, is closed to visitors, but Protos pursues a policy designed to spread the word: 35,000 sightseers a year visit the attractive installations (designed by architect Richard Rogers) and a team of linguists is employed full-time to look after them. Most go on to gawp at Peñafiel, the local town famous for its gastronomic delights, and which receives more than 100,000 tourists annually from all over the globe. Protos wines are exported to 90 countries, and at least inside Spain its position as a leading brand is assured. At the annual “Oscars of Branding”, rating agency SuperBrands puts Protos up there with the likes of Bayer, Campofrio, Repsol and Tuenti, one of the very few wineries to make the cut.
140
Protos in Greek signifies “primero”, or first, so it is fitting it was the first Spanish winemaker to win several prizes in last year’s China Wines and Spirits Awards. But not altogether surprising. So, starting with what must be one of the greatest value-formoney Spanish whites, we have the Protos Verdejo 2016, from the adjacent Rueda region, costing retail €6.40. For something rather more refined and up there with this country’s great whites, Protos Verdejo Fermentado en Barrica 2015 (€14.15) is one of the new breed of classy barrel-fermented Rueda varieties. Only 4,000 bottles are made annually. On to the reds, and Protos Crianza 2013 (€15.75) is what can be referred to as a “tranquil” wine, great for everyday drinking. The Protos Reserva 2011 (€26), made from grapes from 50-year old vines, spends 18 months in oak barrels and then gets 24 months bottle-ageing. The remarkable Protos Gran Reserva 2010 (€41) is made only when the harvest is good, and is aged for five years in barrel and bottle before being released onto the market. It is probably as fine an example of a great Ribera del Duero wine as you will ever have the good fortune to encounter, with the possible exception of Protos Selección Finca El Grajo Viejo 2014 (€60). This wine is Protos’s valid declaration of intent to make a “vino del pago”, or a single-vineyard wine, with the intention of exploiting the terroir elements so favoured by French producers. If you are already a Ribera fan you will not need any instruction about Protos. If, on the other hand, you are about to embark on a journey of discovery of Ribera del Duro, use Protos as your benchmark.

Medical Minutes by John Schieszer
BREATH TEST COULD DETECT CANCER A new study is suggesting that a breath test might help detect stomach cancer in a much earlier and more treatable state. A test that measures the levels of five chemicals in the breath has shown promising results for the detection of cancers of the oesophagus and stomach in a large patient trial presented at the European Cancer Congress 2017. Together, stomach and oesophageal cancer account for around 1.4 million new cancer diagnoses each year worldwide. Both tend to be diagnosed late, because the symptoms are ambiguous. Subsequently, the five-year survival rate for these two types of cancer is only 15 per cent. The new research included more than 300 patients and it showed that the test could diagnose cancer with an overall accuracy of 85 per cent. “At present, the only way to diagnose oesophageal cancer or stomach cancer is with endoscopy. This method is expensive, invasive and has some risk of complications,” said Dr. Sheraz Markar, an NIHR clinical trials fellow from Imperial College London. Dr. Markar said a breath test could be used as a non-invasive, first-line test to reduce the number of unnecessary endoscopies. In the longer term, this could also mean earlier diagnosis and treatment, and better survival. The trial was based on the results of previous research that suggested differences in the levels of specific chemicals (butyric, pentanoic and hexanoic acids, butanal and decanal) between patients with stomach or oesophageal cancer and patients with upper gastrointestinal symptoms without cancer. The new research aimed to test whether this “chemical signature” that seemed to typify cancer could be the basis of a diagnostic test. Dr. Markar said because cancer cells are different to healthy ones they produce a different mixture of chemicals. However, he cautioned that these findings must be validated in a larger sample of patients before the test could be available here on the Costa del Sol. The team is also working on breath tests for other types of cancer, such as colorectal and pancreatic, which could be used as first-line tests in general practice surgeries. POTENTIAL BRAIN BENEFITS LINKED TO MEDITERRANEAN DIET Grab a bottle of Rioja. This is worth toasting. A new study shows that older adults who follow a Mediterranean diet might retain more brain volume. However, contrary to earlier studies, eating more fish and less meat was not related to changes in the brain, according to a new study published in the journal Neurology. The Mediterranean diet includes large amounts of fruits, vegetables, olive oil, beans and cereal grains such as wheat and rice, moderate amounts of fish, dairy and wine, and limited red meat and poultry. Researchers studied older adults over a three-year period who followed the Mediterranean diet. “As we age, the brain shrinks and we lose brain cells which can affect learning and memory,” said study author Michelle Luciano, PhD, of the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. “This study adds to the body of evidence that suggests the Mediterranean diet has a positive impact on brain health.”
Researchers gathered information on the eating habits of 967 people (average age 70) who did not have dementia. Around age 73, 562 of the subjects had an MRI brain scan to measure overall brain volume, grey matter volume and thickness of the cortex, which is the outer layer of the brain. From that group, 401 people then returned for a second MRI at age 76. These measurements were compared to how closely participants followed the Mediterranean diet. Individuals who didn’t follow as closely to the Mediterranean diet were more likely to have a higher loss of total brain volume over the three years than people who followed the diet more closely. The difference in diet explained 0.5 per cent of the variation in total brain volume, an effect that was half the size of that due to normal ageing. The results were the same when researchers adjusted for other factors that could affect brain volume, such as age, education and having diabetes or high blood pressure. The researchers also found that fish and meat consumption were not related to brain changes, which is contrary to earlier studies. “It’s possible that other components of the Mediterranean diet are responsible for this relationship, or that it’s due to all of the components in combination,” said Luciano.

WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH
Respiratory Health in Spain? By Rachel Garrod
As you may know I have a special interest in the physiotherapy management of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). This long-term condition is generally caused by cigarette smoking but can also have genetic factors. COPD leads to impairment in lung function with patients suffering breathlessness on exertion, particularly when going upstairs or up slopes. They may have wheeze and cough and can also experience panic or anxiety associated with breathing. COPD is a very common disease and is one of the most frequent reasons for seeking medical attention. In the past decade or so there have been many advances in its treatment, not least the recognition of the role of the physiotherapist and the effectiveness of pulmonary rehabilitation. Pulmonary rehabilitation is an exercise and education programme – generally offered twice weekly for eight weeks – designed for people with lung disease. There is plenty of evidence showing that pulmonary rehabilitation results in improved breathlessness, increased exercise tolerance and better quality of life. In the U.K you have a good chance of being offered pulmonary rehabilitation as our guidelines specifically state that all patients with COPD troubled by breathlessness should be offered pulmonary rehabilitation. But what about the situation here in Spain? A recent study published in the International Journal of COPD reports on a national audit of treatment of COPD in Spanish hospitals. Lopez-Campos and colleagues looked at 17,893 clinical records of COPD patients in outpatient respiratory clinics from 59 Spanish hospitals. They then compared the recorded notes with recommendations from the Spanish National Guideline for the treatment of COPD.
144
The results show poor adherence to the guidelines in many therapeutic areas. Notably only 27 per cent of patients had their inhaler technique checked; only 22 per cent of smokers were offered a specific smoking cessation intervention; exercise performance (using a validated walking test) was reported in less than half the study population; and only 41 per cent of patients were even given advice regarding the importance of exercise. As to how many patients were offered pulmonary rehabilitation, we simply don’t know! On the other hand, the study showed that the Spanish hospitals recorded data on severity, diagnosis, frequency of chest infections and present medical treatments in most patients, but many other aspects of recommended practice were not followed, or followed only in specialised centres. Spain’s public health is to be commended for many outcomes. However, there is a severe shortage of specialised nurses and physiotherapists, particularly those working in the community. These are the gaps that need addressing in the management of COPD in Spain. Once-in-a-Generation RETROSPECTIVE OF DAVID HOCKNEY
An unprecedented overview of the work of David Hockney will remain on show at Tate Britain until 29 May. Inaugurated in February, and sponsored by the Blavatnik Family Foundation with additional support from the David Hockney Exhibition Supporters Circle, the retrospective brings together six decades of the artist’s work for the first time. Major loans from private collections – including works never displayed in public before – are united with iconic paintings from museums around the world. According to the Tate, it is “the most extensive survey ever staged of one of the most successful and recognisable artists of our time. This once-in-a-generation show offers an unprecedented overview of Hockney’s work in paint, drawing, photography and video.” Highlights include a double portrait of renowned novelist Christopher Isherwood and artist Don Bachardy, painted in 1968 and shown in the UK for the first time in over two decades. Isherwood and Bachardy were one of Hollywood’s first openly gay couples and regularly opened up their home to entertain artists, actors and writers. This work was the first of Hockney’s celebrated double portraits, which he painted in the late 1960s and 1970s.
146
Other works in this series reunited by Tate Britain include: American Collectors (Fred and Marcia Weisman) 1968; Henry Geldzahler and Christopher Scott 19689; Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy 1970-1; Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) 1971; and My Parents 1977. The retrospective also features vibrant new paintings of the artist’s home and garden in Los Angeles, united for the first time with earlier works depicting the same subject across 35 years. Hockney moved to this home in 1979 and created Hollywood Hills House 1980, a colourful work showing both the interior and the garden. Twenty years later he painted Red Pots in the Garden 2000, which features the same banana-leaf palm and gently curving pool from another perspective. New paintings of the garden, created following Hockney’s recent return to California after a decade at his Yorkshire home, are also being shown for the first time. www.tate.org.uk / @tate / #Hockney

Meanwhile, work by Wolfgang Tillmans – described as “one of the most exciting and innovative artists working today” – is being exhibited at the Tate Modern until 11 June. The show focuses on his production across different media since 2003. First gaining prominence in the 1990s for his photographs of everyday life and contemporary culture, Tillmans subsequently moved on to a more diverse array of media including photographs, video, digital slide projections, publications, curatorial projects and recorded music. According to the organisers, “The social and political form a rich vein throughout Tillmans’s work. The destabilisation of
the world has arisen as a recurring concern for the artist since 2003, an important year when he felt the world changed with the invasion of Iraq and anti-war demonstrations… Through the assembly of printed matter from pamphlets to newspaper cuttings to his own works on paper, Tillmans stimulates a personal response to a range of global issues.” The Tate exhibition highlights the artist’s “deeper engagement with abstraction”, and includes portraiture, landscape and still lives. www.tate.org.uk or follow @Tate / #Tillmans

COSTA WOMEN
Valuable Insights into Living in Spain Costa Women members have used their experience and knowledge of life in Spain to create an insightful new book. “Spain & Me” is the second e-book published on the subject by this community of women living in or contemplating a move to Spain. Compiled and edited by Costa Women founder Ali Meehan, the book is a compilation of stories and advice from members who have followed their dream and actually made the move. “Possibly the most asked and answered question between foreigners is ‘What brought you here?’,” says Ali of her reasons for creating the book.
“And because changing countries is no small matter, the answers are often the most amazing and well rehearsed, many worthy of a book or film alone. Having read over 6,000 of these answers on the Costa Women profiles and met so many in person, I realise that the time of moving here can be planned or accidental, life defining, traumatic (at times) and definitely unforgettable.” Topics in the 20 chapters cover lifestyle as well as earning a living and family life. The book is available as a free download at www.costawomen.com.

According to the company, in early 2016 the opportunity arose for expansion beyond Belgian territory, with an ever-increasing demand for MT Interiors’ projects in southern Spain, specifically in Marbella and the surrounding areas. “This, added to our already latent love for Spain, promptly led to the opening of a new branch on the Costa del Sol, in association with Belgian signature villa developers IDDOMUS. Our new workshop is now located in Málaga for the convenience of clients and suppliers.” The team of MT Interiors by IDDOMUS includes Belgian and Spanish professionals who apply their skills following the guiding vision and firm values of manager and master carpenter Tim Meeus. “One of the main principles of our design and creation process is to bypass the ‘latest trend’ concept in favour of a distinctive timeless imprint that is innate to all our interiors. This way we add the longevity factor of an exclusive, elegant and functional design that is never outdated. To achieve this we work very closely with our clients, in the design and planning phases, defining taste and functionality priorities to ensure full satisfaction with the end result. “The art of simplicity is therefore also one of our strengths and trademarks. We know that cutting edge technology can be an overwhelming factor when applied unnecessarily – in a kitchen environment, for example. If you happen not to be a high tech chef, we will apply all our expertise in designing and creating your exclusive and timeless MT Interiors kitchen, featuring only practical elements that specifically suit your everyday use and personal lifestyle. This is how we care about making you happy!” Tel. (+34) 687 586 138 / tim@mt-interiors.com / www.mt-interiors.com

Re-Opening with a Diverse Multicultural Team Oasis Dental Practice is welcoming patients again at its new clinic in the Elvira Medical Centre. Originally established in 2010, the clinic has evolved into a dynamic partnership of two talented dentists, Dr. Nina King and Dr. Sacha Miller-Wojtan, who together bring almost 30 years of international experience. The multilingual dentists and support team provide patients with a caring and comfortable service in their own language, from Spanish and English to Danish/Swedish or Norwegian. The clinic offers general and cosmetic dentistry services, including cleaning, whitening, white fillings, crowns, bridges, implants and veneers. Dr. King’s extensive international experience stretches across five countries. She recently returned to the Coast after completing a two-year contract in Dubai, where she worked in a prestigious dental clinic and taught at postgraduate level. A UK native, Dr. King trained at Guy’s Dental Hospital and is one of a select few to be recognised on the UK speciality list in her field of prosthodontics. Dr. King served UK patients for 13 years, including in the West End of London and at The Royal London Dental Hospital. Her international reputation also extends to Barbados, where she was based for three years, holding the title of president of the dental association. Dr. Miller-Wojtan has a special interest in restorative and cosmetic dentistry. She trained in Denmark, at the University of Copenhagen, and gained further expertise through aesthetics courses in Italy, London and the U.S., where she is a participating member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Dr. Miller-Wojtan has seen patients on the Coast for over a decade and is known for her gentle touch and soft-spoken, reassuring manner. Both dentists are committed to offering the highest standard of care and, as
such, also collaborate with other specialists for specific areas of dentistry such as endodontics (root canal treatments) and orthodontics (braces). “We are a dental team focused on providing a professional service which is comparable to any international standard of excellence,” said Dr. King. “We treat patients with honesty, integrity, respect and empathy.” Patients also have access to other services such as a medical GP, physiotherapy and nursing.
