FROM THE

editor

For those who have been enjoying the luxury of sleeping in, languishing on a sunbed all afternoon and blissfully over-imbibing during the summer break, reality will now be wreaking its traditional vengeance. Yes, it’s that dreaded time when post vacation stress disorder clicks in. Okay, we’re being a little over-dramatic. After all, this is southern Spain, and the wonderful year-round weather, incomparable al fresco lifestyle and frequent opportunities for chilling out by the sea can be appreciated well after our summer visitors have returned home and our professional responsibilities have once again become the main priority. Nevertheless, to help you navigate through this potentially traumatic period and be steered along a cheery path as autumn sets in, we are pleased to share the latest enlightening news about the art of being happy. Many readers will recall that the cool term last year was “hygge”, a Danish word that, according to Visit Denmark, roughly translates as “cosiness” and essentially means “creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people” – for example, around a candlelit table. This year, so we are told, “hygge” has passed the baton to “lagom”, a Swedish-originated virtue of moderation and balance. In this respect, we are encouraged to embrace personal enjoyment and individual contentment while also retaining a healthy lifestyle and helping to encourage group harmony. The term can be applied to work habits, social occasions, and even to interior design and décor. In the latter case, it tends to imply a minimalist concept of “less is more”. In short, as psychologist Niels Eék explained in a BBC report this summer, “Lagom teaches us to avoid both excesses and extreme limitation, allowing us to better understand what makes us happy and what works for our own unique mental wellbeing.” If the Danish are considered the happiest people in the world – or they were until Norway ended their reign at the top of the United Nations’ “World Happiness Report” earlier this year – Japan tends to lead any longevity index or ranking. Bearing in mind that many Japanese are forced to endure onerous working hours, strict hierarchal protocols and confined housing spaces, the obvious question is: how are they able to stay happy during their long lives? The answer might be found in another trendy term currently doing the rounds, “ikigai”. Similar to the French phrase “raison d`être”, it effectively means “a reason for being” or “what makes life worth living” – and discovering it is said to bring satisfaction and provide a meaning to life. Whether it is work, a leisure pursuit or raising a family, ikigai identifies the source of value in a person’s life and embodies the reason why they get up in the morning. Whatever your inspiration when starting a new day, we hope some of the décor ideas in the following pages will help you enhance the cosy ambience of your home and provide bounteous contentment in the post-summer period – and well beyond.

Heavenly

Walls

Wallpapers come in so many varying patterns, colours and textures these days that design options are endless. The beauty of wallpaper is its versatility. It can be put up and pulled down with relative ease and speed, and the overall visual impact that a wallpaper provides can totally transform a room. Recently, we have seen trends leaning towards bold prints such as exotic birds, plants and large geometric patterns. Feature walls still seem to be quite popular and double-up as an artistic statement, giving the room an eye-catching focus. Placing a console table with a vase and perhaps a mirror on the feature wall can perfectly finish off the look and give a designer feel to the room. The same also goes for textured wallcoverings that add a touchy-feely dimension to a wall. Home & Lifestyle Magazine takes a look at the latest collections available on the Coast‌ The stunning Paris Green range from Glamora is a washable vinyl wallpaper available in various rich colours. It is water-resistant, eco-friendly and slightly embossed, giving it an impressive texture. Glamora is available from UDesign in San Pedro de Alcåntara (www.udesign.es) and B&D Marbella in Pol. Ind. La Ermita in Marbella (www.bydmarbella.com).

Power

Flowers and plants have really made a comeback in the world of design, with major fabric and wallpaper designers adorning their new collections with bold floral and leafy prints. We can’t seem to get enough! Plants and flowers not only add aesthetic beauty to your home but also improve the air quality as well as your mood, tranquillity and, some sources say, creativity. With these aspects in mind, we need to give our leafy friends a stylish vase or pot to provide them with an appropriate home. Here are some ideas…

The Bones range of plant pots from Vondom come in various sizes and can be illuminated to create a striking feature in your garden at night. Wallpapers, furniture items such as clever cabinetry, statement chairs, floor mirrors, rugs and tables are making more of an appearance in this area, as well as interesting lighting ideas including chandeliers and wall sconces. Making Your Bedroom A Blissful Haven

We all know by now that our bedroom should be uncluttered to keep the mind at its most restful state. We have been advised of this many times over! However, that does not mean you cannot have your most treasured items around you to make you feel at home and comfortable in your resting space. In recent years, we have seen a trend for Scandinavianstyle bedrooms with lots of white and grey accessories, natural materials such as wooden headboards, side tables and lamps complemented with wool and linen bedclothes. Whether the Scandinavian look is your preferred style or not, there are plenty of ways to make your bedroom a stylish haven by simply choosing a high-quality bed and mattress, good storage systems, ambient lighting and well-thought-out decoration that fits well into the space.

Below Autumn is the best season of the year to install hardwood floors as it is the ideal climate for such an installation. Wooden flooring needs to acclimatise to the indoor environment before it can be properly installed as it is important for it to take on the indoor humidity level and temperature. If not, the wood can absorb moisture and swell, especially in the summer months, and in winter it can dry out and crack, which is why autumn is such a key time for installation. Hain, Rudda and other prestigious wood manufacturers from Germany and Austria are exclusively available at Korsch Cabinetmakers in Polígono Industrial Elviria (www. korsch-tischlerei.com).

Bridging History By Ali a Bab

As summer draws to an end, we are sated by the heat, noise and pollution, so I thought I would show you some serenity. Bridges are wondrous things. They have been around since a very long time: think of the Great Wall of China and the Roman aqueducts, to name just two among many famous examples and all the smaller and not so well known ones. They take us from here to there and back again. Who knows who built them all! Some are famous, most are not, and yet they play a vital part in our lives. They were built with stone, roots, impacted earth, vines and all sorts of materials. All of them were eco-friendly and a lot of them used recycled materials, although at that time no-one knew about these things. The examples I am showing

you here are lovely bridges: from Ireland to Japan, Yemen to China… bridges are everywhere in the world. Their design has been adapted to fit the places where they are located, and how clever were they who designed and built them. Using primitive tools and a lot of manpower (most of it forced), they still stand today, as monuments to ingenuity, eco friendliness and skill. We are too fond of using steel and iron – metals carved out of our planet, granted – to span great space. This is needed but I am drawn to those little bridges with years of people going over them, each with their own story to tell.

Sculptural Creations Inspired by Nature Interview with Matias di Carlo

124 SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER 2017

First Person HL53.indd 124

28/8/17 18:07

How did you enter into the world of art? I grew up in my family’s wrought iron workshop in Argentina; my first memories are of the bright cherry-red iron glowing in the fire. There, amongst raw materials, I began to play with shapes and volumes for the first time. In that workshop I spent years learning and perfecting the techniques I nowadays use for my creations. At a very early age I began to receive my first commissions to design special pieces, allowing me to express and develop my own sculptural language. This was my entry into the world of design... What are the inspirations behind your work? My main sources of inspiration are in nature and the interaction between matter and void. I also like to work with the sense of power and proportions. Take us through the process of making your sculptures ( from the initial idea to the final work of art)... The starting point is finding the concept to work around. Whether it’s a customer commission or a more personal project, it all starts off with an idea which is then developed. Once I have the idea, I turn it into a mental visualisation including every detail. During this creation stage I completely lose track of time. This is a very exhausting process but at the same time the most important. After this I prepare the technical plans and/or drawings and the materialisation of the sculpture

begins. The combination of metal, fire and water allows me to transform the inert material into a sculptural creation. Why do you like to work with corten (weathering) steel? I feel really attracted to corten steel because of its resistance and technical possibilities. When properly worked and shaped, I see the earth in its true essence – it captures the environment and breathes together with it. It is also an amazing material for architectural designs, especially in large-scale formats. What does the future hold for Matias Di Carlo? With the recent opening of my design gallery in Marbella I am now connecting with special people who share my perspective and passion for art and design. We are working on several commissions for sculptural furniture, and after successfully presenting my most recent sculpture during the Art Marbella fair I am now developing a new series of sculptures to be presented at various international fairs. Pure Lines in an Idyllic Landscape The villa featured here is accommodated in a geographically privileged plot on a hill in the prestigious La Zagaleta urbanization (BenahavĂs), facing south and overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. 126 SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER 2017

Design Showcase HL53.indd 126

The project is simple, explains Manuel Ruiz, partner and creative director of ARK Architects. “A horizontal plane is proposed as a ‘podium’ on which the house stands as if it were a Greek temple. This basement, or podium, comprises a spa, gym and relaxation areas, while the upper levels are highlighted by the villa’s grand living areas.” The property’s precise architecture features “pure lines that evoke a certain modern classicism, aiming only to frame the idyllic surrounding landscape of sea and mountain through large glass panels that seek at all times to provoke an extension of the inside spaces towards the outside. “In this way,” adds Ruiz, “we link the architecture directly to the environment and the garden, and in some moments it is difficult to differentiate the boundary between interior and exterior space.” Ruiz quotes Luis Barragan, who said, “I like to design houses that look like gardens and gardens that look like houses.” Reynaers Aluminium sliding systems were used for La Zagaleta H-11’s windows and doors. In this case, the lift and slide CP 155-LS system and the minimalist sliding Hi-Finity. Both facilitate large sizes, minimum visible aluminium, connections between the inside with outside of the house, and optimum entry of natural light. These systems’ high performance makes them ideal for modern architecture. The installation was carried out by Moncada Aluminium, a member of the Reynaers Installer network. Chic Style in La Cala

The developer’s main request for this show flat in the La Cala area was for it to be warm and relaxing, “so the moment you walk in you feel you are on holiday”. Siesta Interior Design then set to work creating a suitably laidback and cosy atmosphere that is ideal for a holiday home at any time of the year. The style is described as Ibiza and Boho chic – with some ethnic touches. “We used mainly natural materials, natural wood, linen and yute, and kept it very simple, not overdressing with accessories. We wanted each of the furniture pieces to stand out by themselves, to show their own character.” The Siesta designers kept the colour palette calm, highlighted by white and sandy hues, except for the second bedroom where they introduced a strong turquoise. The outdoor covered terrace, which will be used in this particular apartment to greet clients with drinks, includes two lounge areas framed by handmade yute rugs. “We wanted to make sure the indoor and outdoor followed the same style, and the terrace still felt as warming as the indoor, as here on the Coast we spend so much time outdoors. The panels on the wall and the outdoor curtains also add a cool, summery look.”. Siesta Interior Design Centro Comercial Centro Plaza 44-46, Nueva Andalucía (Marbella) Tel. UDesign might be based in Marbella but their work takes them to the world’s most luxurious enclaves. From the deserts of Marrakech to the snowy slopes of fashionable Verbier – and to the bright sandy beaches of the Cayman Islands – UDesign’s international clientele are keeping the company in globetrotting mode. Their latest international project is slightly closer to home: a listed building in London’s fashionable Belgravia. The property is distributed over six floors with nine bedrooms and is full of beautifully detailed period features. After working with UDesign on a large project in Marbella the owners were keen for the company’s talented design team to take on their magnificent London residence. The brief was to retain the integrity of the internal architectural features, but at the same time create a modern yet classic feel.

Each project UDesign undertakes can be said to be truly bespoke as they create furniture specifically for its individual design and décor, as well as having their own Signature Collection. If you’re looking for a style that is different from the norm, “something bespoke that’s really you”, UDesign are the company to contact. UDesign – Architecture & Interiors Pol. Ind. Stunning Cortijo Transformation in

El Madroñal

The property featured here was a dated “cortijo-style” house when Lord Designs Interiors were commissioned to completely modernise it up to current standards. The client wanted to transform its original rustic features into a contemporary style, while still retaining a “homey” feel. “They wanted warm/happy colours,” says founder and interior architect Sophie Lord. “To that end, we used a light colour pallet with splashes of citrus tones combined with fresh aqua-coloured accents. All of the fixtures are in warm gold/bronzes, which is currently being favoured over stainless steel options.” Lord Designs also made the rooms appear a lot bigger than they were, by clever space planning. “We changed the distribution of the rooms to make it more practical and feature a better use of space. We redesigned the ceilings, interior doors and dressing rooms, as well as the lighting design.” The project was basically a new build. The villa was taken back to a shell and totally redesigned including all new bathrooms, kitchen and major adjustments to the exterior. “The finished result is hardly recognisable from the old villa that it once was,” according to Sophie. On the business side, Lord Designs Interiors have been experiencing rapid growth, and a particularly successful year, prompting them to move to larger premises: a new office/ showroom on the main street in San Pedro Polígono. “Although we specialise in high-end interior design and that is where our passion lies,” says Sophie, “this year we have completed a large office block in the Netherlands, as well as various commercial projects such as a nightclub and fashion boutique in Puerto Banús. “Our reputation is what drives us, and all of our projects are through recommendations from happy customers. We are an extremely well liked and friendly company working in a professional and honest manner. It has taken me years to build up my team of professionals, which I am very proud of.” Lord Designs Interiors Tel. Authentic Italian Cuisine IN THE HEART OF MARBELLA

140 SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER 2017

28/8/17 18:29

Part of the successful Metro Group, Cibo Italiano offers authentic Italian cuisine at reasonable prices. Situated at the end of the Golden Mile, the restaurant features an attractive décor, giving it an airy and relaxed ambience. Even though Cibo is quite spacious, it still has an intimate feel with several areas where diners can enjoy privacy within their own dining booth. Seating is well laid-out and suitable for any kind of diner. From parties and family groups to romantic meals, Cibo can accommodate all requirements and preferences. There is ample outdoor seating for al fresco dining, where you can sit down the side of the restaurant or out the front – and take in Marbella’s buzzy atmosphere. Both terraces are delightfully decorated and are covered by awnings, allowing you to dine outside all year round. The menu offers a wide range of dishes from pastas, risottos, seafood and meats to pizzas (gluten-free pizzas are also available) and salads. Cibo pride themselves on their authentic Italian food and sensible prices, and this is certainly the case with pizzas ranging from just €9.50 to €14, and many of the pasta dishes coming in at around €15. All the dishes we tried were generously portioned and creatively placed on the plate. As a starter, a must-try is the antipasti sharing plate, which was beautifully presented on a wooden board with salami di Napoli, Parma ham, Caprese salad, crispy prawns, bruschetta and chargrilled vegetables served with a tasty dip – and all of this for just €20. Their desserts are all homemade and highly indulgent, with the likes of the typically Italian tiramisu, a dark chocolate and salted caramel pot, limoncello cheesecake and panna cotta; while for the savoury palette there is the assortment of Italian cheeses with onion relish and candied walnuts. A surprising feature on the menu is their Sunday lunch for only €14.95. It comes with slow-roasted beef served with vegetables, Yorkshire pudding, whole roasted garlic cloves, crunchy roast potatoes and gravy, and is a big hit with the locals and regular visitors. RECIPE PRESA IBÉRICA SERVED WITH A PURÉE OF CARROTS, BEETROOT AND MUSHROOMS INGREDIENTS (serves four people) 600 grams of presa ibérica (shoulder of Iberian pork) 1 kg of fresh carrots 200 grams of small mushrooms 200 grams of beetroot 4 little gems (lettuce) Red wine/port sauce 4 tablespoons of finely chopped parsley 2 tablespoons of finely chopped shallots 1 clove of garlic Olive oil Pepper and salt 1 lemon CARROT PURÉE Peel and wash the carrots. Cut them into even pieces and cook them in water (just above the carrots) with a pinch of salt until they are soft. Take them out and dry them on kitchen paper. Put the carrots in a blender and blend until you have a smooth purée. Add a small lump of butter, pepper and salt to taste. To be sure that there are no lumps left in the purée you can press the purée through a kitchen sieve with the back of a spoon or a soup ladle. BEETROOT Cook them in an oven at 200 degrees Celsius wrapped in tinfoil until they are cooked and soft throughout. Peel them and cut them into four pieces. Marinate the beetroot with extra virgin olive oil, a good balsamic vinegar and salt and pepper. PRESA IBÉRICA Pre-heat the oven to 120 degrees Celsius. Heat a frying pan with a bit of olive oil, until light smoke is coming off the pan. Season the pork with salt and pepper all the way around the meat. Place the meat in the pan and leave it a few minutes until this side gets brown and crispy. Turn the fire to medium heat. Turn over de pork and leave it on this side until nicely cooked brown and crispy. Keep the meat moving in the pan until all sides are nicely coloured. Take the pork out of the pan and place it on an oven tray and place it in the pre-heated oven. If you have a thermometer for meat put it in the centre of the meat and wait until it is around 55 degrees Celsius. When its reaches this point, take it out of oven and let it rest for a few minutes. Then cut the meat into onecentimetre slices. While you wait for the meat to reach its temperature… MUSHROOMS Clean them with a brush, or rinse them under water and dry them again with a towel. Cut off the bottom part of the mushroom stem. If the mushrooms are small you can fry them all in some butter, with half of the chopped shallots and the garlic. If they are bigger, slice them in halves or quarters. When finished, add some parsley. LITTLE GEM LETTUCE When everything is prepared, hot and ready to serve, thoroughly heat up a sauté pan with some olive oil and add the rest of the shallots. Add the little gem

lettuce (cut in four, lengthwise) and briefly fry them on both cut sides. The goal is to just heat them slightly. Add a dash of lemon juice and a tablespoon of parsley. Take out. Serve everything on a plate and start with the carrot purée, then place the slices of meat over it, adding the beetroot, mushrooms and two pieces of little gem as presented in the photo. WINE NOTES

New Region, New Wines, New Labels By AJ Linn

As any golfer on the Costa del Sol will know, the growth of the game locally was, unsurprisingly, in parallel with the building of courses. What has always been referred to as the first generation includes Las Brisas, Aloha, Guadalmina, Río Real, Sotogrande and Atalaya. All were constructed on easy-to-work, relatively flat land with no space limitations and minimal gradients. Those of the second generation were not so comfortable, often having tighter fairways. The last generation comprises courses on land that would normally have been considered unsuitable, but they got built because there was nowhere else. On these mountain goat-courses golf buggies are indispensable. The historical background of Spanish wine is not so dissimilar. The first generation during the middle ages consisted of products from Jerez, trailed shortly after by the Málaga varieties. Rioja chimed in a few centuries later, and following closely in the quality stakes Ribera del Duero. Exports from the Castilla La Mancha region began early and now represent more than half of total Spanish wine exports, most in bulk and at cents per litre The economic downturn of the 1980s provoked a search for lower prices and “new” wines, and the amazing improvement of those from lesser-known regions caught the public’s interest. It was not easy going though, as a wine store owner explained. “There is still a reluctance to order unfamiliar wines in restaurants, particularly if trying to impress friends or business colleagues, but at home people are drinking wines they did not even know existed a year or two ago.” It was not long before household names from La Rioja and Ribera set up satellite bodegas in places like Rueda and Toro, and they deserve to be congratulated on their foresight. They were usually setting up in regions that were relatively unknown but where the wine was good, or potentially good if advanced techniques could be applied. The existing local producers were not normally skilled at marketing and distribution, which is where the newcomers could show them a clean pair of heels, in most cases already having national networks. Nor was every region a winner. Of the 70-plus officially recognised, some, such as Tacoronte-Acentejo, Ycoden-Daute-Isora and Arabako Txacolina will have faded from the reader’s memory by the next paragraph. Nevertheless there are important “new” regions that have come into the limelight as a direct result of competitive prices and superb winemaking. As the pick of the “second generation” regions, Somontano must be near the top, along with Toro and El Bierzo. There are excellent wines from Campo de Borja, abutting Navarra (the Borgia family had estates here), and surprisingly good red wines are coming out of the Jerez area. Even closer to home Ronda has matured and settled for fair prices. Yecla, Jumilla, Cariñena and Alicante are all regions that have started producing good wine lately, and some decent stuff from the Balearics and Canary Isles now have a firm presence on restaurant wine lists. As an ideal example of how this new generation of winemakers is shaping up, Yecla was, until recently, a region whose wines were not really made for anything but local consumption. Fortunately modern grape husbandry and winemaking techniques have transformed them from just drinkable to

very good indeed. The Winery On bodega, a comparatively new enterprise founded and run by German designer Karel Eissner and Pablo Cortes, has quickly found a loyal band of devotees for its six varieties, all based on the local Monastrell grape and with hard-toignore labels. This tannin-heavy fruit is thought to have originated in Spain, although it is also found, as Mourvèdre, in the Rhône, Provence, California and Australia. Winery On’s high standards dictate that as a matter of policy only 10,000 bottles of each quality are released each year. The autochthonous Monastrell vines are 50 to 60 years old, and some of Winery On’s reds are blended with Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. No aggressive chemicals are used in the 20-hectare vineyard and maturing takes place in American and French oak barrels. Prices start at €8.50 for the La Más Bonita white and rosado, followed by the most agreeable La Morena Mia at €11. Top of the range is the €23 Enfuria Classic, aged for 20 months, and made with all Monastrell (15.5º alcohol content). The regular Enfuria (€14) contains Petit Verdot and Syrah, as well as 50 pert cent Monastrell, and sells for €12. The other varieties, De Muerte, De Muerte Gold and El Chico Malo reds, range from €12 to €15. Indeed, for the quality and general excellence of the entire series, the wines are brilliant value and worth cellar space in anyone’s collection. The natural tannin of the Monastrell will enable a long maturing life in the bottle. Distributor for Costa del Sol: Vinacoteca La Cartuja, Marbella, Tel: (+34) 952 775 203

The Psychology of Growing Up PREPARING CHILDREN FOR KINDERGARTEN

Elena Gatsenko graduated from I.I. Mechnikov National University’s general psychology faculty in Odessa in 2004, specialising in clinical psychology and with a dissertation topic on “Impaired Concentration”. Elena has a special interest in fairytale and art therapy techniques. She is a head of the pacesetting poly-lingual International Kids Club in El Campanario (Estepona), where her interactive rubric “kindergarten” is dedicated to questions of early development and education of pre-schoolers.

In future issues of Home & Lifestyle Magazine, Elena will write about such diverse subjects as: hyperactive and timid children; children’s fears and hysterics; exploration and development of children’s talents and aptitudes; jealousy to younger ones; and preparation for school. “But,” she says, “the best questions and the most important answers come from a dialogue with you. Write to me, ask questions and I will answer them with pleasure (kidsclub@elcampanarioresort.com).”

28/8/17 18:33

Noting that expatriates are all new newcomers on the Costa del Sol, Elena says, “And to a greater or lesser degree we all find ourselves in a stressful situation in connection with relocation. Today we have a chance to bring up our children as citizens of the world. In any part of the world they will be able to feel at home, be masters of a situation. In addition to early learning of languages, they also need psychological training. “If a small child from the first months of life is moved together with the mother, the child broadens borders of their ‘home’ at least to the scale of a city. It means that any unknown place beginning from a playground to a bank is just like another unexplored ‘room’ for your child. They are not afraid of people around them, actively get acquainted with the world, and become less shy. The next stage, your child’s independent steps into adult life, is kindergarten. Parting with the mother is the most terrifying thing that happens at this stage. I’m sure that most of you remember a picture from your childhood: morning at kindergarten, some are crying, tightly seizing their mothers’ legs, some are sitting with a sad face, silently suffering ‘betrayal’, and happy ones are rushing to play. In spite of what side you took in your childhood, today you can turn the time your child spends at kindergarten into a fascinating first job.” Looking ahead to Elena’s forthcoming columns, we asked her some key questions related to the first issues that parents should address… Is it necessary to send your child to kindergarten if you are able to be with them at home? Yes, it is necessary as least partially for half a day. Communication with peers should be deeper and more diverse than it is on a playground. It is a preparation for school, additional intellectual development, acquaintance with the laws and rules of social behaviour. Even if your child is hyper-sociable and knows 150 rhymes by heart, your dear homegrown “prince” or “princess” might find themselves an outcast in the secondary school.

What is the best way to prepare children? A competent PR is everything for us. In a good time, half a year or a few months before, begin to tell them about a fantastic place where remarkable boys and girls are gathered, where there are beautiful rooms for children only and a special garden for walks. A place where your child will be taught to speak different languages, where every child plays together, does crafts and eats delicious meals at small tables. Tell them only adults can be enrolled there (if your child is at “I’ll do it myself ” stage) or only the best ones like them… You can also show them a few kindergartens from a distance and say that some day they will be able to go there. How should parents approach the first visit? In an ideal scenario introduce a kindergarten teacher to your child and show them a room when it is empty of children. For example, before classes start or on a weekend. The kindergarten teacher will conduct an excursion during which the child is allowed to hold their mother’s hand, show lockers and beds, toys and tutorials, and tell your child what children will do there together. Then we go there for an hour or a maximum of two hours (even if the child forgets about the mother and doesn’t want to go home). If your child is worrying, take a break for a few days and then return for a certain entertaining lesson: musical or creative. During a week you can increase the time to half a day, for instance, until rest-hour. And only after this stage can you leave your child for the whole day. What should parents consider when choosing a kindergarten? Be sure to visit a couple of them. Get acquainted with the kindergarten teachers who will educate your child. Find out what subjects and in what volume children learn; be sure to assess the size and landscape gardening of the playground; obtain more specific information about the time and duration of outings, and of the menu. Listen to your heart and show the shortlist to your child.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Don’t Stress! By Rachel Garrod

We all know stress is bad for us but do you know why? Our work and social life can all put tremendous stress on our bodies but for most of us we just push through. The problem is that constant stress has a nasty kick to it – inflammation. Inflammation in the body starts as a protective mechanism: the body’s immune system response to an injury or a pathogen. Swelling and redness around the site of a cut, for instance, may be a sign of inflammation. Initially damaged cells secrete chemicals known as cytokines. These increase blood flow to the area and alert the rest of the body to the injury. Blood vessels dilate and release cells that effectively attack and consume any invading pathogens and later clear the debris away. This is all good news but the problem comes when inflammation, which started as a positive effect of the immune system, refuses to go away. All kinds of diseases are linked to inflammation, notably heart attacks, diabetes, dementia, respiratory disease and arthritis, so learning more about inflammation could be the key to improved health for many.

Until now the scientific understanding of what causes chronic inflammation has been limited, but researchers Serhan and colleagues have found that the failure may be in a previously unknown “off switch”. It’s not so much that inflammation has a constant push to stay “on”, more that the trigger to stop may be malfunctioning. Serhan thinks this trigger comes from another set of cells called resolvins. So much in our daily life triggers inflammation – obesity, poor diet, smoking, inactivity and stress – but fortunately there are a number of things we can do that may help stimulate the release of resolvins. Regular exercise gives us benefits in two ways: it can reduce stress and gives inflammation a hard time. Low dose aspirin has some resolving-like actions and appears to kick start the resolution of inflammation. Losing excess weight is also another good way to reduce inflammation ( fat cells release inflammatory mediators). Having a diet rich in Omega-3 helps fight inflammation and, strangely, stretching your muscles seems to have a beneficial effect. Perhaps that’s why yoga is associated with so many health benefits. If you want help being more active, please get in touch.

Stunning Steel Perspective AT ART MARBELLA FAIR

Matias di Carlo was one of the leading Spanish and international exhibitors displaying their work at this year’s Art Marbella fair. The Argentine-born sculpturer, who recently opened his own gallery in Marbella, exhibited his “Pulse” work at the contemporary art show. The eye-catching piece was sculpted from corten (or weathering) steel, measures 270 x 230 x 120 centimetres, and weighs 800 kilograms. After growing up in his family’s wrought iron workshop, Matias di Carlo went on to perfect techniques that use the surrounding space as his canvas and the power of fire to transform metal into the strokes that give life to his sculptures. This was showcased in stunning fashion with his “Pulse” piece on show at Art Marbella,

which was described as “articulating matter and space in such a way that they merge to create a synergy that transports the observer to the innermost of the piece. Very rarely does a sculpture condense the physical strength needed during the creation process, and is then still capable of dynamically instilling that power.” Matias di Carlo Polígono Nueva Campana, Local 37B, Nueva Andalucía (Marbella) T el. “SCHOOL OF LONDON” AT MÁLAGA’S PICASSO MUSEUM A summer-long exhibition featuring artists associated with the “School of London” remains on show until 17 September at the Museo Picasso Málaga. Organised in collaboration with Tate London, the exhibition is described as bringing together “Francis Bacon’s powerful solitude, Lucian Freud’s carnal angst, Michael Andrews’ encapsulated ego, Frank Auerbach’s three-dimensional painting, David Bomberg’s emotional force, William Coldstream’s rigorous measure, Ronald B. Kitaj’s multiplicity, Leon Kossoff ’s visceral quality, Paula Rego’s subversion and Euan Uglow’s proportion”. All these artists are associated with what has come to be referred to as the School of London, “a label that has not, however, been accepted by art historians or by the artists themselves”.

WOMEN, FREEDOM AND SURREALISM In October, the museum will be presenting ( for the first time in Spain) an exhibition that provides an international look at the new creative horizons opened up by women in the context of surrealism. Announcing the new show, the museum noted, “Tenacious, transgressive and controversial, women surrealists only gained their full freedom and protagonism as artists when they rebelled against the social and moral impositions of their time.” Exhibiting from 10 October to 28 January, “We are Completely Free: Women Artists and Surrealism” brings together more than 100 works by 18 artists from different countries: Eileen Agar, Claude Cahun, Leonora Carrington, Germaine Dulac, Leonor Fini, Valentine Hugo, Frida Kahlo, Dora Maar, Maruja Mallo, Lee Miller, Nadja, Meret Oppenheim, Kay Sage, Ángeles Santos, Dorothea Tanning, Toyen, Remedios Varo and Unica Zürn. The works include paintings, drawings, sculpture, collage, photography and film.

LATEST NEWS ABOUT Worldwide Real Estate Figures Residencias Lujosas Vitalux, S.L. are well known for their real estate services covering Málaga province, especially in top locations around Marbella, but business owner Doris Kavcic has also always maintained a great interest in the prices of properties worldwide. For example, prices have risen 27.4 per cent for luxury real estate in Shanghai, currently a world record; while second and third places also go to China. “However, this massive price rise is no longer desired,” says Doris, “so measures have already been taken to calm the market there.” According to the Pri-100 index, 10.1 per cent is the strongest price increase within European luxury real estate, in Amsterdam. “At the moment, you get only 17 square metres in Monaco for US$1 million, 20 square metres in Hong Kong and 26 square metres in New York. In Europe, the most expensive area is in London with 30 square metres for this sum, closely followed by Geneva, Vienna and Paris. In comparison, Marbella still offers top price performance conditions. Buyers can look forward to a wide selection in all price categories – a growing trend.” Residencias Lujosas Vitalux, S.L. VILLA 25

New Home Retail Shop opens in Marbella

Villa 25’s newly opened shop in Costabella (East Marbella) offers customers an eclectic and stylish mix of home accessories and gifts “designed to appeal to those looking for something refreshingly different”, as well as a bespoke decorating service. Interior decorator and Villa 25 owner Rita van Dijk spent months sourcing products she believes are unique to the Coast. Her aim is for the shop to offer customers a special retail experience “where they enjoy coming in, if only to spend time exploring the packed shelves and items on offer”. Having lived for 20 years in Dubai and being well-accustomed to supersized retail centres and a plethora of shops catering to a shopper’s every need, Rita wanted to bring a little of that retail variety to Marbella. “Villa 25 is the realisation of a life-long dream and passion for interior décor,” she says. “I can spend hours walking into and around any home shop and always hoped I could open up a small one of my own. Having worked as a deco-

rator in Dubai, California and Marbella, I always found it challenging to find the perfect accessories to complete the looks I was creating for my clients. The idea behind Villa 25 is to provide customers with a wide variety of stylish accessories and gifts that they can’t easily find anywhere else.” For those seeking larger items that are not displayed in the shop, Villa 25 has a digital catalogue that customers can look through and purchase on a special-order basis. Additionally, Villa 25 also offers a bespoke decorating service “that can be as small or as big as a customer needs it to be”. Located in Costabella (between El Rosario and Elviria), Villa 25 is perfectly situated on the main road (N-340) close to the English International College (EIC), and has dedicated parking out front. Open all day from 10 am to 6pm (closed Sundays). Tel. (+34) 952 939 300 www.villa25decor.com

Inheritance Tax Reductions IN ANDALUCÍA

Article supplied by Welex

Andalucian legislation on inheritance procedures includes an interesting change this year in applying the autonomic reduction for a spouse and direct relatives, with heirs paying no tax if the amount is no more than €250,000. Under the new legislation, which came into force on 1 January 2017, the full reduction is applicable provided they meet the following requirements: • They are direct relatives of groups I and II: that is descendants and adopted, spouses, ascendants and adopters. • The value of the inherited assets, for each heir, does not exceed €250,000 (before the law reform, this taxable base could not exceed €175,000). • Pre-existing wealth does not exceed €402,678.11. • Beneficiaries of life insurance policies are included. The amended law also allows for the correction of what was considered a “jump error”. In situations where the assets exceeded €175,000 – for example, €180,000 – the heirs had to settle the tax for the full amount of the inheritance (i.e. €180,000)

and not for the excess of €5,000. After the amendments to the law, if the value of the inheritance assets is between €250,000 and €350,000, a reduction of €200,000 would be applied, so that the heirs would only be taxed for the amount exceeding €200,000. For example, if a child inherits from his father an inheritance valued at €295,000, this would be settled for €95,000. For inheritances over €350,000, heirs are required to pay inheritance tax on the full amount: i.e. from €1, with no reduction at all. This amendment to the law also applies to cases of acquisition of assets and rights by inheritance, legacy or any other successor title, if the deceased had been resident in a member state of the European Union, following the Judgment of the Court of Justice of the Union European Union of 3 September 2014 (Case C-127/12). Do not hesitate to contact our law firm in Marbella, to resolve any doubts you have about this matter or any others related to successions.
