FROM THE
editor
Most people asked to name the most important aspects of their home lifestyle would almost certainly coincide on at least one. Comfort is an essential quality that we have been aspiring to since our ancestors settled in caves, and today well into the 21st century it remains an enduring element of contemporary home décor and design. It was also the main theme at the autumn edition of Maison & Objet in Paris. According to Marie-Jo Malait, coordinator for the fair’s observatory and editor-in-chief of the Inspirations Book, the objective in choosing “Comfort Zone” was to invite visitors “on this journey away from the discomfort zones of an unstable and insecure world. It is about time we shifted to a new paradigm of wellbeing at home.” And how do we achieve that? “By soothing both body and soul. To satisfy our yearning for rest and quiet, shapes become rounder, more enveloping. They wrap us up in a protective and comforting cocoon. Funny-looking cushions on legs replace chairs and provide the perfect place to sit and relax. Soft materials are everywhere and contribute to our wellbeing. References to bubbles, balloons, nests, clouds, even pods and husks, feed the creative imagination behind this new-generation ‘cocoonection’. Greyish pastels and faded pinks wash tensions away.” Marie-Jo Malait added that comfort was not only limited to home interiors. “Comfort is reaching outside the home into the public sphere: train stations, waiting rooms, cinemas, offices, etc… Wallmounted capsules, movable partitions, wall coverings made from insulating fibres, ergonomic elements that shift our perception of comfort. People work standing up, now, too. And when they do need to sit, they do so on isokinetic ball chairs, Pilates balls, wobble stools. Paradoxically, lack of comfort is our new idea of comfort!” With that intriguing overview in mind, we visited every nook and cranny of the modern home to prepare a comprehensive Décor & Design section, seeking out the key ideas, concepts and little touches that can transform our homes into havens of chic comfort. As this is the last issue of the year, and another festive season beckons, we paid special attention to kitchens, dining areas and table settings, where the intrepid home cook can weave their magic and the rest of us can happily savour the results of their culinary creativity – in absolute comfort, of course.

Wonderful Winter
Wallcoverings We at Home & Lifestyle Magazine are crazy about wallpapers because they are so diverse and can dramatically change the look of a room with just one wall covered. This year we have seen the big names in wallpapers pushing their creative talents in all directions, celebrating nature and colour – from lavish to cool natural tones – as well as bold geometric and three-dimensional designs. We take a look at some of the latest collections…

Tell us about the main products offered by Agata Bath Design… Agata Bath Design offers beautiful designer mineral stone bathtubs and sinks. Agata baths are designed and manufactured in Poland to the highest quality and durability standards, with cutting-edge mineral stone-based materials. What materials do you use? MINERALICAST® is one of the most reliable and unique cast materials on the market. The main component of the material is powdered dolomitic marble that consists of 96 per cent calcium magnesium carbonate, which is a natural mineral known as “dolomite” – CaMg(CO3)2. The powder is produced by disintegrating and purifying genuine dolomitic marble, which is a metamorphic rock formed by natural transformation (metamorphism) and estimated to be over 500 million years old. During the production process, the powdered dolomitic marble is mixed with dedicated resin to create a strong casting filler. The external surface of each casted product is covered by one of our exclusive sanitary gel coat coatings for perfect surface finish and performance. This combination of material components creates the unique composite material MINERALICAST®. Its properties allow manufacturing of high-quality products of almost unlimited shapes and efficient technical and functional features. Bathtub finishes are offered in matte and high gloss variants. LIGHTCAST®, with its combination of handmade processes with advanced casting technologies, presents the lightweight material option, used in the creation of oversized bathtubs which are much lighter than equivalent ones manufactured with other common materials such as cast marble or solid surface; but at the same time they out-perform their competitors with longevity and durability. The
surface of LIGHTCAST® products is repairable and, thanks to higher thermal insulation of the composite material, water temperature stays constant for a longer span of time. MONOCAST@ is the solid smooth surface alternative offered by Agata Bath Design for selected products in the range. What are some of the other main features of Agata products? Agata bathtubs and sinks are fully de-aerated, scratch resistant, void-free, nonporous, stain-resistant and easy to clean, as well as resistant to thermal shock, surface abrasion, UV and impact. The surface of Agata products is easily renewable, smooth and warm to the touch. And your design options? Agata Bath Design offers the best high-end design, quality and price ratio currently on the market, based on a direct sales and distributor approach. In addition to the current designer product range, the possibility of designing an exclusive and personalised cast mould is of particular interest for developers and large multibrand distributors and architects. There are almost no limits in terms of shapes, complexity or sizes for our products, which present perfect solutions for demanding projects. Agata Bath Design works closely with designers, architects and builders, providing detailed installation guidance, but does not offer its own installation service. Acclaimed Resorts Built On
Stronger Foundations For over three decades, CLC World Resorts & Hotels has given tens of thousands of families the opportunity to own or part-own a stunning holiday home in some of the world’s most desirable locations, including on the Costa del Sol.  120 NOVEMBER & DECEMBER 2017

Apollonium Spa & Beach, Turkey
Regal Oaks, Florida, USA Monterey Royale, Tenerife, Spain
Led by its Chairman and Founder Roy Peires, CLC World builds and manages its own resorts, boasting an international collection of developments that its Members are proud to call home from home. From Orlando and Tenerife to Turkey’s Aegean Coast and Alpine Austria, the brand has become synonymous with giving families unsurpassed holiday experiences befitting of its status as Europe’s largest independent resort operator. As developers – as well as managing the resorts the company has built – CLC World carries an enviable level of distinction within the holiday home ownership fraternity. And it’s this reputation that provides reassurance to its clients who know that, wherever they’re staying in CLC’s World, it will be characterised by a stamp of impeccable interior design and amazing customer service, and supported by a wealth of leisure, entertainment and dining options. Recent evidence of this development blueprint was epitomised in both Kusadasi (Turkey) and Regal Oaks (Florida) after 1,500 high-quality units were successfully built and sold-out in these resort hotspots. Yet it’s here on the Costa del Sol, on a stretch of real estate at Las Farolas, where Roy first laid the foundations for holidaymakers to own a stake of a property in the sun. With an impressive collection of multi-faceted resorts nestled between the tourist hubs of Fuengirola and Marbella, the magnetism of this ever-popular part of southern Spain is now the setting for the next exciting phase in the company’s evolution: the luxurious Santa Barbara Heights. Fresh from the architects’ drawing board, building work will commence shortly on the company’s most contemporary residential project to date. Sitting on land within the existing California Beach Resort – lying moments from the beach and

only a 20-minute drive from Málaga airport – Santa Barbara Heights is a pioneering development set to break the mould for property ownership on the Costa del Sol. Bringing the exclusivity of just 50 apartments (including three penthouses), plus the indulgence of each unit boasting its own glass-fronted plunge pool, geometric lines and floor-to-ceiling windows, residents will fall in love with its architecturally-striking appearance, inspired interior design and mesmerising tropical landscaping. Due for completion in summer 2019 and built on an elevated position, each unit will boast captivating views of the Mediterranean Sea and along the sparkling Fuengirola coastline. Still on the Costa del Sol, and also integrated into CLC World’s renowned California Beach brand, plans are afoot to build a further 167 apartments that will encapsulate the latest in contemporary design and luxury living. To be called La Reserva, the development will house a commercial centre, with restaurants and a supermarket, plus a state-of-the-art sports centre with fitness suite and spa. CLC World’s acclaimed interior designer, Beatriz Lario Slavenburg, is the creative source behind the company’s commitment to the highest possible level of quality and interior excellence. Beatriz is already leading the rollout of the upscale Signature Collection brand, which has seen a select number of properties in resorts in Tenerife, the Costa del Sol and Cornwall upgraded to reveal bold originality and contemporary living spaces. Now with Santa Barbara Heights and La Reserva on the horizon, Beatriz is challenged with raising the bar to even higher levels. ecotrends gardens
Winter is Coming HOW TO START PREPARING YOUR GARDEN FOR EARTHLY DELIGHTS NEXT YEAR
Putting the garden to bed for the winter is actually mostly a matter of cleaning up and covering up. As autumn progresses and temperatures drop, those plants that aren’t killed outright by frost – not too prevalent here on the coast but more common up in the mountains – prepare for dormancy. So clear out any blackened stems and foliage of annual flowers and vegetables, to prevent the possibility of their harbouring disease pathogens and insect eggs over the winter. The cool weather is a good time to make a cold frame, dig and box-in raised beds, and make general repairs if you have space. While it appears as if all activity in the garden has stopped, there’s a lot going on under the soil until it freezes. Newly transplanted trees and shrubs, divisions of perennials and hardy bulbs are all growing roots, drawing on soil nutrients and moisture around them. Earthworms and various microbes in the soil are still processing any organic material they’re finding. Most likely, the organic mulch you spread to protect the soil during the summer months has substantially decomposed. It’s important to spread new mulch now -- a thicker winter layer – to protect plants and soil over the winter months, even in not so cold places.
The idea is not so much to keep the soil warm as it is to keep the temperature even. So if you have shade trees convert the fallen leaves to mulch and use it throughout your property. I dig in rotting leaves continuously; that way the soil is always being composted, even in plant pots. Avoid cutting hedges until the end of winter, to provide valuable shelter for birds and give them more time to eat the berries. Resist the urge to cut back ivy growing on walls and fences. Wait until March so the berries are available to birds and the foliage can provide a foraging habitat for insecteaters such as tits. Clear your pond out between October and early January – this is when wildlife activity is lowest. However, there will still be plenty of snails, dragonfly and damselfly nymphs and other invertebrates in the vegetation that you pull out, as well as the occasional newt or frog. So sort through it to rescue trapped animals and spread it out on the edge of the pond for a day or two. It’s a case of using your head to think about how to protect your plants, bushes and trees. Thankfully we don’t have huge climate changes here but the preparation we make now will give us more beautiful plants over the next year.

Contemporary Comfort and
Timeless Appeal in BenahavĂs
Nestling in the lower hills of BenahavĂs is the highly coveted Capanes urbanisation. Over the last two years it has become one of the most sought-after residential areas on the Costa del Sol, resulting in a hive of activity of modern new villas currently under construction. 124 NOVEMBER & DECEMBER 2017
Property Showcase HL54.indd 124

Bearing in mind its close proximity to the coast, and nearby amenities including a golf course, supermarket and international school (with an excellent reputation), this is hardly surprising, not to mention the spectacular village of Benahavís, which offers many excellent examples of Mediterranean cuisine suitable for all tastes, and diverse opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities. Less than 10 minutes by car is the sparkling coastline and sandy beaches, including the world-famous Puerto Banús and Marbella, and the ever-popular Estepona. For frequent travellers who use the villas as a holiday getaway or for international businesspeople who want to move, or have already relocated, to the area Málaga and Gibraltar airports are both just a 50-minute drive away. Bringing to the drawing board the advantage of exceptional professional knowledge and insight into the area, Atlas Group commissioned renowned architect Diego Tobal to design something extra special for them. The result is a villa with a modern touch to cater for current trends and tastes, but also with a timeless appeal that will not fade over the years. Constructed over three floors including a basement, the villa truly has it all. A long, sweeping driveway takes you up to the main entrance, with space for several cars – and the option of a pergola or garage. An infinity pool adorns the garden, with the cascade creating a stunning effect along the edge of the driveway; and the basement area includes a garage and the possibility of a gymnasium, cinema, additional bedrooms, lounge and/or entertainment areas. The basement is bathed in natural light and leads directly out onto manicured gardens. The ground floor features a double-height lounge, fully-fitted kitchen and dining area, with two doublesized bedrooms complete with en-suite bathrooms. A spacious hall leads you into this extremely special villa, including a guest WC and cloakroom. The first floor is completed with two master suites, a dressing room and en-suite bathrooms, with the opportunity of creating a third bedroom/bathroom if necessary. The views from the villa are simply spectacular, overlooking the golf course and all the way, uninterrupted, out to the Mediterranean Sea. On clear days the African coastline almost seems to be within touching distance. The idea was quite ambitious but Femont Galvan Designers were the perfect team to bring the project to fruition. The owners wanted to convert a threebedroom apartment into a one-bedroom luxury suite, using materials of the highest quality while not interfering with the home’s existing tranquillity and their art collection. “For the new layout,” explains the design team, “we took into great consideration the flow between the spaces. Even though each room has its own character, the use of continuous panelling and flooring creates a completely harmonious feel throughout the apartment. The neutrality of the flooring and panelling also allows the artwork to ‘colour’ the environment.” The bathrooms and kitchen were designed with maximum functionality in mind, using high-tech new materials for the wall coverings and countertops that resist the wear and tear of daily use, without taking away the prevailing sense of luxurious yet calming softness. Neutral reflective colours were used to optimise light throughout the apartment; and the doors and closets were completely integrated into the panelling to enhance the overall flow of the apartment space – making it appear more expansive and uninterrupted. “The result is an apartment with a bright ambience and timeless elegance, where the owners can feel completely at rest. At Femont Galvan Designers we always try to think like the client. We are 100 per cent committed to interpreting their needs and ideas, and forming them into their dream home.” Femont Galvan Designers Urb. Home Comforts in Paris
This year’s second Maison & Objet exhibition in Paris explored the main theme of “Comfort Zone”. François Bernard took over the Inspirations Space to present a selection of objects by exhibiting brands, and the Bookshop-Café with a variety of sources illustrating the theme. The Inspirations Book also shed light on the theme from various forward-looking perspectives, while the Conference Space provided an opportunity to further explore the notion of comfort with a five-day programme of debates on current related trends. The September 2017 edition of Maison & Objet registered a significant upsurge in the number of visitors compared with the past two years. According to the organisers, “Insight into current and future trends, the new and improved layout for the Objet Hub, the endless supply of creativity from exhibitors and a wealth of complementary content available on social networks have provided additional momentum to the event.” The exhibition featured 3,000 brands, including 674 new exhibitors, and offered a multi-channel ecosystem to enhance the digital experience for exhibitors and visitors, highlighted by the online platform MOM (MAISON&OBJET AND MORE) – “an innovative solution to maintain exhibitor visibility in between events and a unique growth lever for brands”. The Designer of the Year was Tristan Auer; the Rising Talent Awards went to latest graduates of the ENSCI-Les Ateliers; and The Green Itinerary honoured 11 exhibitors who “share the same focus on local production, fair trade, recycling, artisanal know-how and sustainable development”.

Showcase of
High-End Interior Design in London
High-profile exhibitors across all sectors, including furniture, interiors and lighting, helped Decorex celebrate 40 years of exceptional design in the grounds of Syon Park. Considered the leading UK destination for interior design, the fourday showcase attracted over 14,000 trade and consumer visitors. Disruptive Dining, the main entrance installation, featured four elegant dining scenes bringing together the worlds of fashion, floristry, set and interior design. Created by leading designers including Matthew Williamson at Osborne & Little, Larry Walshe, Beata Heuman with Fromental and EligoStudio, the settings brought to life a summer garden party in a stately home, a geometric metaphysical sunset dinner, an architect’s working dinner and a casual dining floral feast. Inside, the Shalini Misra-designed Champagne Bar highlighted, as its centrepiece, an exquisite crystal chandelier designed by Erfre for Clartes. Inspired by the world’s first exhibition at Crystal Palace in 1851 opened by Queen Victoria, the design represented the fountain under the original canopy, topped with Prince of Wales feathers with a vegan gilding by royal wood carver Paul Wilson.
The Entrance Café marked Decorex’s 40th anniversary theme of collaboration, with three leading Derbyshire brands, Blackpop, Curiousa & Curiousa and Royal Crown Derby, celebrating the county’s creative heritage. Within the halls, the Design Sense installations featured a sensory experience created by Rachel Vosper, an audio space by Lamont in collaboration with Bowers & Wilkins, “Sight Sensation” by Tim Gosling and friends, and a touch feature area by Country Life in collaboration with The Campaign for Wool. Also held this past autumn was the 15th edition of the London Design Festival, promoting London as “the design capital of the world” and bringing together 500 exhibitors from 28 countries, including independent designers, established brands, international country pavilions, features and exhibitions. Another successful show held in conjunction with the festival was designjunction, where Turkishceramics’s Gateways proved to be the most photographed and shared project. The commission by Adam Nathaniel Furman showcased Turkey’s rich ceramic history through four, brightly coloured gates, each referencing a different era.

Cutting-Edge Interiors at
Feria Hábitat Valencia
Visitors from 51 countries gained valuable insight into latest trends and products when Spain’s premier home interiors fair returned to its autumn date. According to the organisers, the four-day Feria Hábitat Valencia attracted a total of 23,174 trade visitors from Spain and other countries, “well above the most optimistic forecasts”. The number was considered to be a turning point for the fair, which tripled in size this year as it returned to its traditional dates in September. “These two moves were justified by the final visitor numbers, which were a significant increase over the number recorded for the 2016 edition of the fair, when Hábitat was still being held in February alongside Cevisama and FIMMA-Maderalia.” Among the professionals visiting Feria Hábitat Valencia, “there was a notable proportion from abroad, with 18 per cent of all visitors hailing from a wide range of countries – from 51 different markets in fact”. Forty per cent of these professionals came from the European Union, while eastern Europe became the second biggest source of visitors from the interiors industry, generating 17 per cent of all accredited foreign visitors to the fair. They were followed by Latin America (14 per cent), Asia (10 per cent), northern Africa (nine
per cent), North America (six per cent) and the Middle East ( four per cent). In terms of the visitors’ professional profiles, two stood out in particular: retail professionals (shops selling furniture to the public) and specifiers (architects, decorators and designers) more closely involved in projects and the contract sector. “Whilst these two profiles accounted for 37 per cent and 21 per cent of the bulk of visitors to Hábitat, other significant groups were sales agents (12 per cent of all visitors), buying groups (12 per cent), wholesalers/importers (10 per cent), and professionals from the construction and property development sectors (eight per cent). “Along with these there were also other groups that, whilst not professionals in the strict sense of the word, were nonetheless a significant presence at the fair. These included students of design, for whom the Salón nude and Ágora nude zone was the favourite space, and journalists and media professionals. In fact, this last edition of Hábitat accredited 253 journalists from 16 different countries.” The Hábitat team is now working on the next fair, which will be held from Tuesday to Friday, 18-21 September 2018, “with the same format, at the same venue and in the same place on the exhibition calendar that produced such great results this year”.

BUY-FOR-RENOVATION MARKET
IS HOTTING UP By Marco Dalli, part of Toni Dalli Associates.
I HAVE ALWAYS SAID THAT IF YOU ARE LOOKING TO INVEST IN A PROPERTY,
THEN INVEST IN LOCATION FIRST. THE DANGER OF FALLING FOR THE CLIMATE, SEA AND LIFESTYLE IS A REAL FACTOR IN THIS PART OF THE WORLD. IN OTHER
WORDS, IN THE HEAT OF THE MOMENT YOU JUST DON’T CARE WHERE YOU LAND AS LONG AS THE SUN SHINES ON IT.
We receive many calls in our office from people asking us to find a property for renovation, and they don’t really mind if it’s in a poor location, as long as it’s a good deal. This is a big mistake in Marbella or anywhere. The buy-for-renovation market is providing quite a few opportunities where you can win with the location and also get a good deal. It just needs a bit of concentration and effort to hit that investment in the middle of the bull’s-eye. In this market, sellers with old properties on nice plots are all of a sudden attracting a lot of interest from developers, which is a good thing. Howev-
er, don’t expect top dollar unless you are thinking of developing your own property to take advantage of the end users who are looking for turn-key. I work a lot with top listers such as Katinka and Alex Clover from the brokers Panorama. They are among a very small group of experts who really know about the importance of a good location. More and more of their clients are being encouraged to improve and take control of the potential their properties have. This is proving extremely popular, and home-owners now have the option of professional help to become mini-developers themselves.
If you would like more information about the buy-to-renovate market, contact Marco Dalli on Tel. (+34) 678 648 765 or email, marco@marmorinspain.com.

Gourmet Cuisine With the end-of-year festive season drawing close, home cooks will be starting to think about some creative new ideas to wow their guests. Or perhaps there is a special anniversary, family reunion or business lunch coming up and requiring a deft and delectable culinary touch in the kitchen. Whatever the occasion or catering requirements, these two menu suggestions from Chili Gourmet by Helle Barlebo are an excellent starting point.
PORK CHOPS A LA CHILI GOURMET INGREDIENTS (4 servings) 4 large pieces of pork chops with bone ( from the local butcher) 2 cloves of garlic Handful of fresh red chillies Juice from ½ orange Fresh thyme Shot of olive oil Maldon flake salt and five kinds of pepper 1 big mango 2½ large oranges 4 spoonful of liquid honey Glaze of balsamic
Crush one chilli, garlic, thyme and spices in a mortar and pestle. Add the fresh orange juice and olive oil. Rub the pork chops with the marinade and leave them to rest in the fridge for a couple of hours. Cube the oranges and pour the honey over them and marinate for half an hour. Brown the oranges in a frying pan until they get a light golden colour. Remove the skin and stone of the mango and chop the meat into smaller pieces. Blend the mango with the excess liquid from the honey and oranges and refrigerate before use. Brown the pork chops in a frying pan or barbecue for a few minutes. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees and broil the meat until it is tender and juicy. If you decide to barbecue, close the lid instead of using the oven, to obtain the same result. Decorate each plate the creamy mango-orange cream and balsamic glaze. Put the tender meat in the middle of the plate and top it with the orange cubes, a pinch of thyme and a couple of fresh red chillies. Serve together with a couple of delicious crispy rösti potatoes and fresh-baked bread.

DELICIOUS RÖSTI POTATOES INGREDIENTS (4 servings) 250 gr. potatoes ½ small red onion 50-60 gr. bacon 2 eggs (free-range farm, naturally) 1/2 dl. whole cream Handful of freshly chopped parsley Maldon flake salt and freshly ground 5 peppers Butter for frying Peel the potatoes and put them in iced water for a couple of minutes then grate them. Whip the eggs and add the cream, parsley and spices in a bowl. The bacon and small onion is then cut into thin strips and mixed into the bowl. Add the grated potatoes and mix. Fry on both sides until they are golden in a Belinis pan on medium heat with some butter. This dish can be made in advance and heated up in the oven right before serving. The restaurant is in a stunning location, with a fresh, vibrant atmosphere. Renowned for taste and presentation, and excellent friendly service, the team at Alevante Marbella leave no stone unturned to bring you the best in portside dining. The décor and views are fabulous, and with live music and events it’s certainly one of the newest hotspots to consider – and well worth a visit. Recently under new management and now part of the world-famous Beckett’s Marbella family, it looks set to compliment this beautiful setting in the port, which has just received another 5-Star Blue Flag award. With a modern and creative menu, you can enjoy delicious food inspired by travellers from around the world, from sunrise to sunset. A focal point of the Mediterranean over the years, Marbella port and the yacht club itself ( founded in 1956) are well-recognised features of the landscape along the coastline. New owners Marc and Penny Quinlan felt it was important to honour this historic location that has been central to society in Marbella for many years. As such, during the renovations this year it was essential to make sure that tradition was blended with modernity, and they chose to include a wall of historic memorabilia to allow visitors to view the huge changes that have occurred over the years in the area.
With the introduction of a refreshing alternative menu, there is something for everyone from traditional paella to super-food salads, and an unforgettable fish baked in salt. They use locally sourced ingredients and fresh fish is delivered daily. The feedback from clients old and new has been a breath of fresh air for Marc and Penny. Whether it’s for early morning coffee, lunch or dinner, with stunning sunsets and incredible views out across the sea, port and beaches, Alevante a must on your “places to visit in Marbella” list. • The venue is open to the public from 10am daily, serving an Andalucian-style “desayuno” (breakfast). • Daily lunch is available from 1pm until 6pm, Monday to Saturday. • During this time you can select from the a la carte menu or opt for a special three-course menu for €25. • Sunday lunch is served from 1pm to 6pm. • The a la carte menu is then available until 11pm. • Alevante caters for large groups and parties for up to 200 people, private events and weddings. • You can register online with the group to obtain your loyalty card to receive a 10 per cent discount. WINE NOTES
The Great Sherry Comeback By AJ Linn
Assuming you could invest in a stock that represented the sherry-making business, would it be a good idea? Looking back over the last hundred years there is little doubt that it would have paid off handsomely, and if that period were refined down to the last half of the last century, better still. Those were the golden years of Jerez de la Frontera and of all the great sherry families whose names still chime with the older generation: Domecq, Gonzalez, Williams, Gordon, Terry, Humbert, etc. How things have changed. A small handful of these families still own sherry bodegas, but the majority have passed into the hands of multinationals or national conglomerates. The grape harvest, once a jolly affair with hundreds of locals working in the vineyards and partying every evening, is now more often done by machine. Some things have not changed. With few exceptions the same brands and variety of wines persists, and prices remain as modest as ever. Or do they? Most sherry historians agree that the error that condemned the sherry region to sell its wine for give-away prices was the export boom to countries of northern Europe, where it was, frankly, consumed as cheap alcohol. It is still possible to buy a bottle of fino sherry or manzanilla (the neighbouring town of Sanlúcar de Barrameda’s equivalent) for a few euros. Indeed a bottle of very mediocre young Rioja costs more than a fino that has been matured for at least two years in wood. Modern sherry is divided into three main classifications: fino, manzanilla, amontillado and oloroso; also palo cortado, a notch above the rest; and then the sweet wines made from the Pedro Ximénez and Moscatel grapes. Four years ago I wrote, “Quite simply people no longer want to drink sherry. When did you last see anyone under 50 order a copita of sherry in a bar? Young people do not want to know about sherry, whether it be dry fino, salty manzanilla or lip-smacking oloroso. The trade has tried reinventing sherry in various ways but without success.” Now I take back those words. Faced with total obliteration if it did nothing, the sherry-
makers have finally begun to do what I suggested (no credit to me though). While sales of sherry continue to decline, all is not lost. The cheaper commercial wines, often sold in northern European supermarkets under their own labels, are in steep decline, while sales of the genuine natural old wines are growing. This increase is due to a large number of factors: international chefs and sommeliers have discovered how versatile sherry is with food, and the age statement is in fashion: 12 and 15 year-old wines matured in butts, and “en rama” wines, those bottled straight from the barrel. The recent film “El Misterio del Palo Cortado” has also put sherry back on the consumers’ map. It is most unlikely that sherry will ever recapture the sales volumes of its heyday, and an increase in the number of producers is equally unlikely, but the independent bottlers and smaller bodegas are making huge efforts to revitalise the marketplace. Thankfully, a new generation of aficionados is seeking out the rarer and more interesting wines and is prepared to pay a fair price for their outstanding quality. One of Jerez’s oldest houses, Diez Merito (1876) – whose wines sell under the Bertola label – has realised where the future lies if it is to succeed, and produces a range of sherries (and brandies) that top out with 30-year-old amontillados and olorosos at prices of €75, and there are delicious finos and amontillados at around €7. All are outstanding examples of the sherry-maker’s art, and always feature at the top in wine-tasting competitions. Bodegas Yuste (1920) in Sanlúcar has a justified reputation for producing some of the best brands of the region, and its La Kika manzanilla is always winning prizes. Jerez’s Bodegas Faustino González is unusual in that its range of superlative wines is all “en rama” (bottled direct from the wooden butt), but the prices are even more amazing, running from €10 up to under €30 for the premium Palo Cortado. These three are not the only bodegas that appear to have understood what is needed to bring drinkers back into the sherry fold. The Navascues group makes a point of searching old cellars to find butts of ancient sherry that have been forgotten, bottling them and watching them being snapped up almost immediately. Hardly surprising when you appreciate that these wines are unique, are hundreds of years old, and will never be produced again in our lifetimes. For those who have never been keen on sherry generally, think twice and try some of the amazing varieties that are available these days. You will be pleasantly surprised. And if you stopped drinking the stuff perhaps because it was getting boring – as indeed it may have been – the “new” sherries offer more variety than a whole region’s worth of red or white table wine.

CHILDREN’S CORNER
Christmas Fears
Santa’s visit (or Father Frost, Noel) is not the main source of most children’s fears. Only the little ones get scared when, in the kindergarten or at home, they are greeted by a loud stranger in a bright outfit as he invades their personal space. The main source of children’s fears and, quite possibly, lasting and uncomfortable adult inhibitions is… holidays per se. Hence, here are a couple of simple rules. First of all, imagine that the King of Spain (Angelina Jolie, Mark Zuckerberg – delete as applicable) invited you to an inauguration (wedding, orbital station opening), and wanted to shake your hand and to give a gift but, alas, you have important negotiations with your clients, an office briefing or the only time available for visiting a beauty parlour. But it’s okay: his Lordship will invite you again in six months or so. This example of prioritising is clear, I believe. Someone who is more important than all the stars put together waits for you at the most important event (at this time of the child’s life). Don’t even think about missing it, unless you are having any part of your body put in plaster or you are a fire-fighter on duty.
By Elena Gatsenko
Yes, it is not the first kindergarten play for your child and you will get a video of the event later on, but there is nothing more tragic for a child than the absence of his/her family, especially the mother, among the audience. Your child will forgive you, of course, but it will leave a scar, which may become a source of insecurity, reserved demeanour and distrust. If you really have some force majeure, make sure to send someone from the family or a friend who knows and loves your child. Secondly, outfit. The older the child is the more important his/her outfit is. Choose it together in a hire shop, book it online or make it yourself. But make sure to have it approved by the “customer”. For little children it means anticipating the magical moment together, imprinting, and the first reference impression of how one should celebrate holidays and take care of one’s family. For schoolchildren it means you showing respect for your child’s personality and tastes. Your child’s choice may surprise you, but it is their holiday and their role, and the outfit must make the young performer happy, even if he/she is dressed as a snowflake standing in the fourth row. Something that looks neat for you

may become a catastrophe for a schoolchild and trigger mockery, and the other way round. Here are two real-life examples. A school play. The presenter is a magician dressed as a… Car. The child did his part beautifully. It was his triumph. And I applauded his brave and loving mother. The thing is that the boy wanted to be dressed as his favourite character, Lightning McQueen, at the festival, but there was no suitable role for such an outfit. So he was appointed a presenter. His mother made a costume for him out of two red backpacks, and then patiently and insistently explained to the teacher that the magician wished to turn into a car. He can do that, after all. Most parents didn’t even pay attention to the fact that the presenter was not dressed in a standard way. And the child’s mother made her son happy and earned his unlimited trust. There was Pierrot in that school play. The boy was dressed in a beautiful outfit and wore professional white makeup. He didn’t wait for a group photo and left immediately, wiping his face with a sleeve. He felt embarrassed by his makeup and couldn’t hide his tears, and his mother was also upset and thought him ungrateful. She did everything, but forgot to ask whether her child liked her idea. And thirdly, remember that you are not Stanislavsky’s incarnation and not a video-blogger inspecting a new restaurant. Don’t even think about criticising your child! No debriefing or error analysis. And don’t compare your child with other children. That’s the best way to make your child jealous. He/she will start hating his/her classmates or group mates and become reserved. Imagine a situation when you give a public performance, maybe not very successful, and your spouse or parent who was among the audience approaches you at the exit shaking his head and saying, “You could have done better. Why did you keep pulling at your dress and adjusting the crown? I told you not to touch them. Your friends were brilliant. Especially that blonde princess – brave and loud and danced beautifully. Why were you so slow?” What would you want to do after that? Correct. At the very least, not to make public appearance ever again, not to invite your family, and just to blend in with the crowd. You can love your loud blondes, if you like. What shall you do then? Just give credit to your child. Praise him or her on and on. While you are on your way home from the play, call someone and tell them that your child did beautifully, danced greatly, how the colour pink, green or brown looked good on him/ her, that your child never missed the line and moved graciously, and maybe you should sign him/her up for a dancing course because he/ she obviously had a talent. Put your heart into it. I am sure you will find something to praise your child for, even for participation in a very minor performance. Christmas is a traditional family holiday and an excellent time for parents to instil the best qualities and traits in their child. Do you want to remain a friend and authority for your child when he/she is a teenager? Demonstrate your absolute love in their early childhood. It is not difficult at all. Happy, merry and unforgettable holidays to you.

What type of patients does your clinic receive? As we are based in an easy-to-reach part of Europe, which is blessed with a great climate and healthy atmosphere, we receive patients from all over the world – from Oslo to Cape Town and Boston to Dubai. However, the majority of clients are Spanish and British. I have made an effort to train my nurses and staff to be knowledgeable in all areas of hair loss treatment and surgery, and we have a team of multilingual ladies who can care for many types of patients. What is the secret to your successful results? I have been doing hair transplants exclusively since I qualified as a doctor over 16 years ago so my experience is the main reason for my success. Over the years I have tried to fine-tune the surgeries to make them more microscopic and as natural as possible. This is why I came up with “NANO FUE”, which is my greatest success for the best result anyone can obtain. Also, many patients do not realise the result is not just down to my skill; the medical team do a large part of the procedure so it’s important to have qualified, welleducated nurses by your side. I spend a lot of my time watching my staff, teaching them and quality control. What are the successful aspects that differentiate your clinic from others? We offer a VIP service to our patients from the moment they get in touch with us to arrange their consultation, through to the surgery itself and any subsequent medical revisions or check-ups. I am very keen to give clients the best we can offer so they are happy, which in turn is good for my clinic. We give our patients full attention on the day of their surgery; they are the only patient that day so we can focus solely on their needs and give them the best experience and result possible. What techniques and treatments are offered by your clinic? As I only specialise in hair loss prevention and treatment, I offer many types of treatments and procedures to help restore clients’ hair, but it is important to me that I only offer treatments that have been proven clinically to work. I am not interested in therapies that do not work or are purely cosmetic as these are not the treatments that my patients want to receive. I offer surgical interventions, medical therapy and some light therapies.

Minimising Dental Pain AND TREATING DIABETES Medical Minutes by John Schieszer
LASER ZAPS GUM DISEASE Dentistry is getting a little bit less invasive and less painful. Dentists are now armed with a minimally invasive laser, a tiny laser fibre about the thickness of three human hairs, to treat gum disease. The laser helps regenerate bone and tissue. It eliminates the traditional treatment of periodontal surgery, a highly invasive and often painful procedure. This less invasive technique means minimal post-operative discomfort requiring no opioid prescriptions and faster recovery and healing time. Dentists firing up their lasers for this treatment report that most patients are able to drive themselves home and return to their regular daily activities immediately following the procedure. The LANAP protocol, using the PerioLase MVP-7, was developed by Milllennium Dental Technologies. It is the only laser-based gum disease treatment with the proven ability to regenerate all three periodontal tissues, according to the company: alveolar bone, periodontal ligament and cementum lost to disease. They report that more than 2,200 dentists are now offering this preferred treatment to their patients. Most people avoid the dentist because of the fear of pain, but this new laser may help change that. Dr. Gary Jacky, who runs a large dental practice, said lasers are helping change dentistry for the better. He purchased a Solea CO2 laser and was one of 400 dentists in the world who owned one when he bought it this past summer. “They are becoming popular fast. It is for hard and soft tissue and so far it is going great. Most procedures can be done without anaesthesia. The soft tissue healing is much better and cleaner than other methods,” Dr. Jacky. “We do sometimes use a different laser for cleanings that are more extensive.”
COFFEE MAY HELP COMBAT DIABETES In recent years, researchers have identified substances in coffee that could help quash the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Now, scientists report that a previously untested compound in coffee appears to improve cell function and insulin sensitivity in laboratory mice. The finding could spur the development of new drugs to treat or even prevent diabetes. Some studies suggest that drinking three to four cups of coffee a day can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Initially, scientists suspected that caffeine was responsible for this effect. But later findings discounted this possibility, suggesting that other substances in coffee may have a more important role. In a previous laboratory study, Fredrik Brustad Mellbye, Søren Gregersen and colleagues found that a compound in coffee called cafestol increased insulin secretion in pancreatic cells when they were exposed to glucose. Cafestol also increased glucose uptake in muscle cells just as effectively as a commonly prescribed diabetes medicine. In a new study published in the Journal of Natural Products, researchers wanted to see if cafestol would help prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes in mice. The researchers divided mice that are prone to develop type 2 diabetes into three groups. Two of the groups were fed differing doses of cafestol. After 10 weeks, both sets of cafestol-fed mice had lower blood glucose levels and improved insulin secretory capacity compared to a control group, which was not given the compound. The researchers concluded that daily consumption of cafestol can delay the onset of type 2 diabetes and that it is a good candidate for drug development to treat or prevent the disease in humans.

FALLS ARE NOT AN
Inevitable Consequence OF AGEING
By Rachel Garrod
The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) is running a campaign highlighting the role of physiotherapy in the prevention of falls. Falling in older age is a huge problem; falls are a major cause of disability and the leading cause of death in the over-75s. Fortunately, most falls do not result in serious injury, but in about five per cent of cases of those who do fall the person may need hospitalisation. It is estimated that one in three people aged 65 years and over experience a fall at least once a year – this rises dramatically to one in two among 80-year-olds and older. Falls need to be considered seriously. Falls may occur as a result of a multitude of reasons: balance problems, muscle weakness, poor gait, taking too many medications or medications that can make you dizzy, excessive alcohol intake or home hazards (stick the rug down that always slips – now!). Also… impairment in eyesight, incontinence (rushing to the toilet is an unfortunate common scenario), fear of falling (which can lead to altered movements), and cognitive impairments such as dementia. One of the strongest predictors of a fall is experience of previous falls: i.e. if you’ve fallen once you’re likely to fall again. While this is all very depressing it is good to know that physiotherapy can help. Exercise is the most highly researched fall prevention intervention and we now know that 8-12 weeks of a multi-component exercise intervention can reduce both the risk of falling and the rate of falls. To be effective programmes need to incorporate exercise that targets strength, balance, posture, gait, functional tasks, flexibility and endurance. Programmes that focus solely on strength training or walking have been less effective. Balance exercises can be performed quite simply at home; take a look at the CSP’s falls prevention video on YouTube (www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8s-8KtfgFM) – six simple exercises that have been proven to reduce risk. Falling is not an inevitable consequence of ageing. Please get in touch if you want further help to prevent falls.

His bespoke furniture and fixtures, together with classic pieces in grey, cream and white from the B&B Italia and Maxalto collections, offer contemporary design yet timeless elegance and sophistication. The award-winning, comprehensive restoration of the palace has created an ultra-luxury urban resort for Venice. Improving Accessibility for the Public Geoff Scott-Simpson has opened a new eponymous luxury showroom gallery, which is “unquestionably the most stunning of its kind in all of Europe”. Located in Ronda, the spacious fine art gallery lies opposite the Hotel Parador next to El Tajo bridge, with famously breath-taking views. Gleaming polished marbled floors and white stonework lay the backdrop for “some of the most captivating pieces of nature, landscape and cultural photography that one could possible imagine”. People who live in Andalucía and have a restaurant, shop or other service that is open to the public will be interested to learn that by 4 December all public and private spaces must be accessible to people with reduced mobility (“Decreto Andaluz sobre la Accesibilidad” regulations). So what does this mean? According to Cristina Mota of Inclusive Design, “It means that if you live on the Costa del Sol, and you have a hairdressing salon, dentist’s clinic or any other space open to the public, it must be accessible to wheelchair users or people with reduced mobility. “We can visit your establishment, explain what needs doing, and give you a quotation for the necessary changes. We take care of all the necessary adjustments, which could vary from removing steps and providing a ramp to widening doorways, etc., all of them compliant with the law.” Tel. Spanish Tax
ON INCOME FOR NON-TAX RESIDENTS IN SPAIN
Article supplied by Welex
How do you fulfil your income tax obligation in Spain in the event that you are a non-tax resident? Following you will find some aspects to consider when filing Spanish tax declaration form number 210. The so-called Tax on Non-Resident Income (IRNR) concerns individuals and legal entities who do not have a fiscal residence in Spain, but generate some type of income in Spain. The most common case on the Costa del Sol concerns all non-residents who own a property in Spain. Whether the property is intended for rent or for the personal enjoyment of the owners, the Spanish Treasury considers that income is generated (the so-called Deemed Income Tax) and owners are obliged to declare this through a tax declaration. Let’s focus on the latter case of property owners who use it for their personal use, and the main points to consider when producing and presenting the declaration. This tax will be accrued after the year ends; first, you have to consider the date of purchase in the first settlement, because it will only be taxed for the days that have elapsed from that purchase date until the end of the year. From the following year, the calendar year is already taken into account.
Example: If I buy on 10 December, the first year will only be taxed for the days that elapse until the 31st (21 days). The value of the property is determined by the Catastral Reference as long as this data has been published; otherwise, we use the value of the purchase statements that appears in the Purchase Title Deed, and we apply 50 per cent to obtain this data reliably. On this amount (the Catastral value or 50 per cent of the purchase title deed), 1.1 per cent is applied if the Catastral value has been reviewed for less than 10 years or two per cent if longer than 10 years. This resulting amount is what the Inland Revenue considers “Income” and on which the tax is applied. The tax percentage applicable in 2017 is 19 per cent. If the property belongs to more than one person, the ownership percentages corresponding to each owner are applied. As you can see, the theory does not always resolve all of your concerns. That is why at Welex we have a team of professionals who can advise you about the procedures for processing and settlement.
