FROM THE

editor

A new year has arrived and with it some cool new lifestyle philosophies to help us through the next 12 months. In 2015 it was “hygge”, a Danish word roughly translating as “cosiness” and meaning “creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people”; and last year “lagom”, a Swedish virtue that encourages us to embrace personal enjoyment and individual contentment while also retaining a healthy lifestyle and helping to foster group harmony – including in décor and design. Now, the latest news is that “jakos to bedzie” and “còsagach” are what we need to adopt as two of our guiding principles through 2018. In Poland, the concept of “jakos to bedzie” is essentially about “acting without worrying about the consequences – about reaching for the impossible, taking risks and not being afraid”. Of course, we would never advocate irresponsible behaviour when it comes to a home makeover or, especially, a comprehensive refurbishment involving tools and other sharp objects, but we are drawn to the idea of thinking outside the box and pushing the boundaries when revamping our living spaces or simply adding some new furniture in a favourite corner of the home. Also identified as a top lifestyle trend for 2018, “còsagach” is based on an old Scottish word for “feeling snug, sheltered and warm”, according to Visit Scotland who, understandably, are suggesting people visit their popular areas to get away from it all. We are certainly not going to dissent from that respectable view but we feel bound to add that, when it comes to enjoying one of the world’s most coveted lifestyles, in a warm, healthy, cosy and sociable destination, southern Spain will be near the top – or even number one – on many people’s lists. With that comforting thought in mind, this first issue of 2018 is full of both cutting-edge and classic ideas to give our homes a stylish and functional touch this year. As there tends to be a bit of a nip in the air during January and February, we have placed a special emphasis on creating inviting havens where winter days (and most nights) can still be enjoyed outdoors when entertaining friends, relaxing with the family or stealing a quiet moment alone with our thoughts for another enriching year.

Rugs

Rapturous

Rugs

Rugs add warmth and ambience to a room and - with Mediterranean homes often having marble, tiled or stone floors - they are a must for a bit of comfort underfoot, especially during the winter months. Whether your rug is a statement piece, a practicality, or both, there is something for everyone. Rugs can really give a room an uplift, often even instantly making it feel more welcoming. If a room has plain and neutral colours, a splash of colour from a rug can give it a new lease of life.

Missoni Home’s Nordic Fantasy collection is inspired by the icy tones and pure vibrant colours of the Sami traditions. Missoni Home is available from Femont Galvan (www.femontgalvan.com) and Vertigo (www.vertigo-marbella.com) both situated in the Marbella Club.

Window

Dressing

Windows ideally should be complemented with a curtain, blind or shutter to finish off the look. Your windows allow you to see the great outdoors so give them some love and frame them with a window solution. Curtains offer cosiness, texture and warmth, providing as much importance to the design of the room as the furniture items. Blinds use much less fabric than curtains but also offer practicality and a design statement, coming in a wide range of designs and materials.

There seems to be no end to the possibilities when it comes to wallpaper – with infinite designs and textures available at our fingertips. These days wallpapers are not just limited to indoor walls but they have also taken over the ceiling, furniture and even exterior walls. Last year we saw a growing trend of wallpaper designs depicting plants, flowers and animals, and this is set to continue in 2018. Matt and metallic finishes are also becoming increasingly popular. Home & Lifestyle Magazine is pleased to show you a selection of the many collections available on the Coast at the moment…

Lighting

Brightening Up Your Winter One major element that enhances the ambience of your home is lighting. The positioning and type of illumination you choose is extremely important in order to create the perfect atmosphere. The lighting you use for one room will not necessarily be suitable for another room in your house, so functionality and respect for the room’s existing decoration have to be considered. The lighting industry is a fast-moving market due to driving new technology so it is important to do adequate research to find the best lighting solution to suit your home.

Fabrics

Cosy Up For Winter Jacqueline Roberts discovers the world of décor is as hot as ever during the winter months.

The exotic Panama Jardin Tropical collection from Casadeco (www.casadeco.fr).

An exceptionally soft, deep faux fur throw with a cream faux suede on its reverse from The French Bedroom Company (www.frenchbedroomcompany.co.uk).

So, Christmas is over, the presents are done, the food has been eaten and there are months to wait until the summer. If it all seems a bit gloomy, don’t despair as this is the best time of year to get your home in order. Whether you’re looking for a stylish cave in which to hibernate or plan to update your entire space and emerge like a butterfly in spring, we’ve got some fabulous ideas to spruce up your home this winter. For colour inspiration, look at hues like mulberry, burnt orange, ochre, forest green and midnight blue. Looking for something a bit more neutral? Then seek out greys in tones of winter morning mists and dark smoke. If block colour doesn’t float your boat, then this winter animals are definitely in with badgers, owls, deer and hedgehogs featuring heavily on wallpapers and fabrics. Alternatively, the summer trend of lush palms and foliage has continued with some stunning feature walls. The winter is all about snuggling down and, like it or loathe it, real fur is back in a big way – über-luxurious Tibetan lamb, shaved rabbit and goat skin all featured heavily in the September shows as well as plenty of excellent faux fur in cushions, throws, poufs, beanbags and rugs. Knitted accessories scream winter, and this season bolder styles such as huge chunky cable-knits have been replacing demure weaves. Nothing provides that air of indulgence quite like velvets – think of sumptuous, pooling curtains and Arabian night-style floor cushions. Chilly winter nights need warmth and there is nothing quite like curling up in front of a real fire or alternatively a log burner. It doesn’t take much to make a feature of

Nature fabric range by Prestigious Textiles (www.prestigious.co.uk)

a fireplace – an attractive fireguard and a gorgeous wicker basket for your logs and already your source of warmth becomes a source of aesthetic beauty as well. Rugs are definitely the way to go in winter, and if you have gone for a neutral colour palette then you can really let go when choosing a rug. This season sees some gorgeous, textured rugs as well as a welcome return of ethnic styles such as superb pure wool carpets from Morocco, India and Pakistan. Of course, here on the Costa del Sol, we are lucky enough to still enjoy our outdoor spaces but, when the warming sun drops behind the horizon, the temperatures can plummet. That doesn’t mean you have to rush indoors though. Your terrace can become an extension of your home, even in winter, with some clever thinking. Firstly, a heat source – there are some excellent gas burners out there, some of which are stylish to boot. Or opt for a real fire with a firepit or bowl and place seating around it. Some lovely lanterns, chairs or poufs lined with soft sheepskins, throws to snuggle under… and suddenly your outside space is a winter wonderland. Sitting under a starry sky, glass of mulled wine in hand, surrounded by some good company and you’ll forget its even winter! Tela Bella Avda. José Martín Méndez 37, Estepona Tel. Bedding Delight For A Blissful Night

Now that our nights are colder, our bedding is more important than ever. When choosing bed linen, cotton is generally the most-preferred fabric for sheets as it allows your skin to breathe whilst being soft to the touch and highly durable. There are artificial fabrics that are very soft to the touch and more economical but do not have the breathability that cotton does. Softness and good quality cotton have extra-long fibres (long-staple fibres) and are usually Egyptian, SupimaÂŽ and pima cotton. We often hear about thread-count, which refers to the number of threads that are weaved both horizontally and vertically per square inch. Softer cotton is usually representative of a higher threadcount and will be longer-lasting. Sateen is a blend of cotton and satin weave which has a soft and lustrous feel, while Percale is crisp and durable with a plain weave and a thread count of over 180. Combed cotton, as its name suggests, has been combed, leaving long fibres which are strong yet soft. The Santinia throwover bedspread by King of Cotton features a contemporary and timeless design. It is made from 100 per cent pure Portuguese cotton and is available in white, ivory and mink. It is machinewashable and can also be tumble-dried on a low heat. King of Cotton is situated in Centro Comercial La Colonia in San Pedro de AlcĂĄntara (www.kingofcotton.es).

Indoor Goodness CHOOSING THE RIGHT HOUSE PLANTS As we are in a colder season now, I thought we should look at the myriad of opportunities to obtain beautiful house plants. Decorative, useful and easy to take care of, they bring a lot of good into our homes. Do think about where you want to put them. Some plants cannot stand draughty spots, others less sun and so on. This is very important to ensure you get the most out of the flowers and plants. As with outside plants, containers, soil and knowing when and how much to water or not is important. From succulents, which I love as they are so easy to take care of, to standing plants, what a variety we have to choose from. Succulents prefer bright light, such as found on a south-facing window. Watch the leaves for indications that the light level is correct, as some species will scorch if suddenly exposed to direct sunlight. The leaves will turn brown or white as the plant bleaches out and the soft tissues are destroyed. Alternatively, an under-lit succulent will begin to stretch, with an elongated stem and widely spaced leaves. This condition is known as etoliation, When this happens, the solution is to provide better light and prune the plant back to its original shape. Ideally, succulents prefer daytime temperatures between 70F and about 85F and night-time temperatures between 50F and 55F. Aloe Vera growing in small pots look lovely on a window sill, for example, and are very practical. Proper Watering Succulents should be watered generously in the summer. The potting mix should be allowed to dry between watering, but do not under-water. During the winter, when the plants go dormant, cut watering back to once every other month. Overwatering and ensuing plant rot is the single most common cause of plant failure. Be aware that an over-watered succulent might at first plump up and look very healthy. However, the cause of death may have already set in underground, with rot spreading upward from the root system. A succulent should never be allowed to sit in water. As for other plants, also be careful never to over-water. They might look plump and attractive but soon the plants will lose their leaves, turn brown and yellow and look lifeless.

Some great flowers to plant for their ease are: Peace Lily The easy-care peace lily (Spathiphyllum wallisii) tolerates low humidity and low light. Its glossy, lance-shape leaves tip arching stems that surround the central flower spikes. English Ivy This versatile foliage plant’s dainty demeanour makes it suitable for hanging baskets or pots. It’s among the best houseplants for training on topiary forms or using as a ground cover beneath larger house plants. Place English Ivy (Hedera helix) on a mantel or shelf where the stems can hang down. The stems can grow quite long but are easily controlled with pruning. Tradescantia The trailing stems of tradescantias (Tradescantia spp.) change direction slightly at each node, giving the plant a zigzag look. Grow in mixed baskets, hanging baskets or as a ground cover under larger houseplants. African Violet African violets are among the easiest to grow flowering house plants. They bloom year-round with little effort. Choose from hundreds of varieties and forms, some with variegated foliage or ruffled or white-edged blooms. African violets like warm conditions and filtered sunlight. Avoid getting water on the fuzzy leaves; cold water causes unsightly brown spots. Jasmine There are many types of jasmine. Many-flowered jasmine (J. polyanthum, pictured) and Arabian jasmine (J. sambac) are two of the easiest to grow; just give them plenty of light and moisture. They’ll all bear fragrant pink to white blooms on vining plants. Geranium Several types of geraniums are grown as house plants. Regal or Martha Washington geranium (pictured) has the largest, showiest blooms, but requires cool growing conditions. These are a just few of the hundreds you can choose from. Have a great time growing and enjoying them in all their glory.

BREATHE

A Gastronomic Oasis Combining Air, Earth, Fire and Water

Interview with Rodolfo Jacobson (González & Jacobson) and Mathieu Lèbre (Lema Paisajes)

It is very possible that you have noticed the huge construction site at the opening of Puerto Banús with the eye-catching banner simply emblazoned with the word, “Breathe”. It has created quite a stir with the locals, many of whom are wondering what is going to be the result of all this activity taking place behind the intriguing banner.

114 JANUARY & FEBRUARY 2018

First Person HL55.indd 114

20/12/17 17:36

Home & Lifestyle Magazine caught up with two key professionals involved with the project – leading architect, Rodolfo Jacobson (who has a string of prestigious projects as part of his portfolio, such as Hotel Río Real and Michelin-star restaurant El Lago, to name but a few) and Dom3 prize winner and landscape architect Mathieu Lèbre – to find out more about this ground-breaking project… The brainchild of Marbella real estate entrepreneur Aguilene Benicio McNab, Breathe is an immense and unique project offering a gastronomic experience that has never been seen before in Marbella. The project, planned to be completed this summer, harmoniously combines earth, air, fire and water all around the building to create an idyllic natural oasis for the enjoyment of diners. González & Jacobson were picked as the architects for the project due to their meticulous attention to detail and their project management skills; while Lema Paisajes were hired for Mathieu’s ability to take on large projects and his excellent reputation in the marketplace. Architect Rodolfo comments, “Breathe is spread over three levels with three levels below ground allocated for car parking. On the ground floor, there will be a cafeteria, on the expansive first floor a restaurant and large outdoor garden, and on the top floor a sky bar. Our vision is to provide a lush and eco-friendly environment that breathes life, and evokes emotions and positive feelings – something completely different to anything you have seen on the Costa del Sol.” Mathieu adds, “There will be natural vegetation everywhere, which will consume plenty of carbon dioxide while making the air feel fresh and clean. There will also be a hanging garden and large planted trees, as well as one of the largest vertical gardens on the Costa del Sol. Sustainability plays an extremely important role in the design, which is why we are going to use hydroponic fertilisers that require much less water than normal soil, and fewer pesticides. Another way to conserve water was how we chose the species of plants – they were carefully selected so that they are not big water drinkers. We have also taken measures to recycle water by installing an underground water tank that collects rainwater and rejected water from the reverse osmosis plant, which will then be treated and used to irrigate the plants.” Another interesting aspect to Breathe’s dedication to sustainability is their own geothermal energy system. Thanks to 12x120-metre-deep holes drilled into the ground underneath the building, the system will create an environmentally-

friendly heating and cooling system. Geothermal energy is a renewable source that is much more efficient than electrical energy and even air-source heating/ cooling systems. Another way to conserve energy is in the use of special glass and walls to isolate the restaurant so that the temperature is more easily maintained. The restaurant will be both east and west facing, so in summer crosswind ventilation will keep the restaurant cool naturally, reducing the use of electrical appliances. For the winter months, fireplaces have been designed to give a natural ambience, and the under-floor heating powered by the geothermal system will provide additional cosiness. Water will be a big feature at Breathe, with several different installations. Water will be lit up with LED lights, combined with fire installations and cascaded down steps where visitors can sit and relax. To conclude… Breathe will be a micro-environment in itself, providing a new green area in Puerto Banús that uses the latest in ecologically-friendly and sustainable practices while offering a contemporary and tranquil area for dining, socialising and enjoying a drink. For more information about Breathe, go to www.breathe.life or email team@breathe.life.

Home Whisperer and

Holistic Real Estate Agent Interview with A.H.F. (Toon) Roijers. Heart 4 Homes

What is the basic concept behind Heart 4 Homes? In the late 1980s I switched from being a lawyer in the Netherlands to being an estate agent for a considerable period of time. I owned my own certified real estate agency and also served on the national board of NVM (the leading Dutch branch organisation of real estate agents and appraisers). I founded Heart 4 Homes in 2016. In addition to and during my job as an estate agent, I became aware of my spiritual gifts which I have been developing and applying ever since, in service of my clients over the last 16 years. I noticed that the radiance levels surrounding us have increased tremendously over the last few decades, which greatly impacts our home lives, as well as our general well-being. I studied all over the world and have developed the expertise and competence that allows me to apply my spiritual powers to the day-to-day business of being an estate agent, and to combine those two in my new company Heart 4 Homes. That is why I am now able to help people to find a home which energetically suits them the best. In addition, I can help people who have difficulties in selling their properties. What services do you offer? As a home whisperer and holistic real estate agent with my company Heart 4 Homes I help people to find their perfect home in and around Marbella and on the island of Mallorca. I also help people who want to sell their property, and especially when they encounter difficulties in the process of selling. Can you explain how you work? Although I have both feet on the ground I am very aware of the existence of an intangible reality. Therefore Heart 4 Homes takes a holistic approach towards housing. I have seen that in many exotic cultures new houses are officially inaugurated before their new inhabitants can be fully welcome. In our modern western and down-to-earth society, we don’t do that sort of thing anymore. We tend to think that a house is just a house. However, there is more between heaven and earth. Consider, for instance, the level of radiance in the house, or the presence of old or new energies, which may be invisible but can still be sensed.

Heart4Homes specialises in feeling and discovering such energy, determining its location, then neutralising it. It’s a fairly unique method, which allows us to determine whether or not a home suits you – also energy-wise. In addition, we provide all the traditional services you would expect from a customer-oriented and highly professional estate agency. It is because of this special combination of services that we at Heart 4 Homes are able to give our clients the best possible help finding their perfect home. Our search therefore starts with a full assessment of the client’s personality and wishes. Only then do we start looking for suitable houses available on the market. By focussing on the client’s interests, requirements and personalities we can find a home that really suits them. That is what we mean with “Holistic Search”: we always look at the full picture where the client’s personality is the decisive factor. Your new home must suit the client, and vice versa; the client must be suited to their new home as well. During the welcome assessment we discuss all the client’s personal requirements and practical concerns. This will serve as a basis for their profile, because everyone has different ideas on what constitutes a good living arrangement. We believe that houses should express matters such as beauty, passion and happiness. These are all matters of the heart, and therefore constitute an integral part of your profile. We at Heart 4 Homes are only fully satisfied when the client is. What can your clients expect when working with you? Our clients can expect a personal-orientated, heart-driven approach which will result in finding a home they have always dreamed of. After moving in, the client will feel immediately at home because the house will suit like a glove on each and every level. If a client initially experienced difficulties in selling their property they can expect Heart 4 Homes to look into it fully, discover what conditions are withholding a quick sale, remove those conditions or obstacles and take care of the further process of selling the property. Casasola Décor, previously known as Casasola Muebles, is a family business established on the Costa del Sol for over three decades. They started out as humble carpenters in Campillos and now have a flourishing and well-known Marbella interior design showroom by the Torre Real exit. At the end of last year, Casasola changed their corporate image to give it a more contemporary and international look. Director Cati Casasola Benitez comments, “We wanted to let people know that we are an all-round design showroom and not just a furniture store. We find that our customers, especially those who have very little time on their hands, really appreciate our turnkey projects as we do all the work for them, taking away the stress. “We make a project a reality because not only do we provide furniture, but we help with the other details such as hanging curtains, carrying out renovations, organising decorative paintings, handling paperwork and coordinating all the workers on the project so that everything comes together seamlessly.”

Casasola Décor is a busy showroom that is constantly changing to adapt to latest trends in the marketplace. “This year we will visit the international fairs,” says Cati, “as we are constantly looking for new products, not only in design and quality, but also at varying prices so that we have something to offer everyone, no matter what the budget is.” Another interesting new facet to their business is the launch of an online store where you can purchase products and receive free help and advice from a seasoned interior design professional. Open 9.30am to 7.00pm from Monday to Friday; Saturdays from 10.00am to 2.00pm. Ctra. Cádiz-Málaga, Km 184.5 (mountain side on the slip road straight after the Torre Real exit) Tel. OTERO GROUP

Transforming Dreams Into Reality

La Alquería 6

Originally from northern Spain, Otero Group have over 60 years of experience building family homes. During their long and renowned history, they have projected and/or built more than 3.000 houses. “For us they are like our children,” says Rubén Otero and the third-generation members of the family company – who established the business in Marbella eight years ago. The Otero Group have a team of international experts from the world of design, architecture, construction, marketing and law, so this group of professionals can offer a broad spectrum of talents and experience from all over the globe – all now coming together in their head office in Marbella. Otero Group are currently involved in the development of more than 40 different projects on the Costa del Sol, with a wide range of clients from different geographical points in the world. “Above all else, our customers value having a single point of contact and liability with Otero Group, covering the entire constructive chain – from architecture, building and refurbishment to sales and marketing.” Otero Group offer a three-step plan to help clients create their new villa:

1. LOCATING THE IDEAL PLOT “First we have a chat to get to know each other, and after meticulous preparation we will know your needs and preferences about the area and type of house. Then we will offer you a selection of plots. Of course, we expect that you will also look for yourself, and in this case we will advise you about the price or urban conditions of these plots.” 2. DESIGNING A BESPOKE VILLA “Once the plot is found, we will draw up a free bespoke house design according to your directions and tastes. This will benefit the plot typology and fit the urban requirements. As we offer bespoke designs, we will always be able to design a house in line with your budget. Forget overpriced standard projects.” 3. CONSTRUCTION IN ONLY 10 MONTHS “With the design approved, we will then manage your licence, taxes and insurances, and build your house with the highest quality materials and finishes – always with a closed under-contract quotation. We develop turnkey projects, so when we finish you will receive the keys to your new house and not have to worry about anything else.”

FEATURED ON THESE PAGES ARE THREE OF OTERO GROUP’S LATEST PROJECTS… Los Almendros 360 (€2,950,000) The Los Almendros 360 concept was inspired by both contemporary and classical traditional Andalucian styles that work together in perfect balance. The property is highlighted by a privileged location (10 minutes Benahavís / eight minutes Puerto Banús / 13 minutes Marbella) – with exceptional views. The three levels of this villa are accessible through its imperial stairs as well as a modern elevator. The addition of traditional roofs and a recreation of an open Andalucian patio, culminating in orange trees and a wine cellar, create a cosy and spacious environment in the interior of the house. South-facing, the home offers full 360-degree panoramic views from southern Europe to northern Africa, capturing Gibraltar and Morocco in the same photograph. How ARK Creates Experiences on

The Costa del Sol

Photos: Charly Simon

The ARK team has one mission: to create experiences that transcend through each of our projects, becoming a masterpiece that people can enjoy. In this article we would like to show you what makes us different as a team during the process of creating a villa on the Costa del Sol. There are many key factors that contribute to success along the design journey. On the one hand, an enthusiastic team and on the other hand, high-quality suppliers. It does not only consist of designing a house: it is about landscaping, furnishing and a mix of elements in order to create a home, a sanctuary. This is the reason why all elements of the project are designed by us, and we keep an eye on each stage. In addition, as a result of our awareness about energy consumption and the carbon footprint, we consider it our duty to build houses in a sustainable way using the resources provided by an amazing location such as the Costa del Sol. Besides, technology has made houses smarter and has facilitated people’s lives. Also, we want to promote both the energy-saving culture and design innovation for domotic homes. That is why we believe that this tandem is essential in order to offer a complete experience. For us it is meaningful not only to build, but also to reflect our customer’s identity in each detail. We conceive our projects as an extension of our customers in order to reflect their tastes and thoughts, because we know how to put ourselves in other people’s shoes. Our customers confide in us thanks to our strong background – more than 30 years of experience – in the luxury sector. Our work proves that art and spirituality are experiences that can be materialised through architecture and design.

RECENT EXAMPLES Villa Mozart Imposing volumes emerge on a plot in the hills of the prestigious Sierra Blanca urbanisation in Marbella. Winning views of the Mediterranean Sea are one of the special features of this picture-perfect villa. A state-of-the-art living sculpture where appealing geometry meets undeniable sophistication, resulting in a masterfully crafted house. Scrupulously focused on elegance and functionality, the villa’s overall aesthetics have an outstanding individual character. Purity and unexpected contrasts, fine materials and intricate details create the personality of this home. Cosy and intimate spaces become open and airy thank to the floor-to-ceiling windowed living areas. White concrete walls formalise the spaces, always with stone accents re-covering fireplaces or TV walls. The ground floor is highlighted by a magnificent entrance hall, with twin staircases to the first level and to the basement, and opening onto a spacious living room with access to a covered terrace with stairs leading to the garden and pool. Next to this living room is a huge kitchen, the dining area and an auxiliary sitting area. On the first floor is the master bedroom with a private terrace. In addition, a further two bedroom suites with dressing rooms and private bathrooms are located on this level. The basement level features a professional gym, wine cellar, games and chill-out room, sauna and steam room, home cinema, three to four-car garage and staff apartment.

The other special feature of this architectural piece is the swimming pool on the roof floor, which blends with the horizon, creating an awesome place to contemplate the captivating surrounding landscape and Mediterranean Sea. Villa Agora The idea behind Villa Ágora started with the goal of creating a major space to resolve the necessities and relationships of its inhabitants. The house is located in the prestigious Sotogrande (Cádiz province) area and is abstracted from its nearby environment thanks to natural barriers which provide the inhabitants with a high level of privacy. A luxury house projected with a vanguard style and extremely depurated volumes that allude to the white Mediterranean architecture. The main façade is linked to the garden through some asymmetrically composed volumes, and it features a spectacular covered porch that allows people to pursue most of their daily routines outside. In front of it there is a fabulous pool that looks like a water sheet integrated into the landscape. Peace and calm flow together inside the building. Every space creates an ambience designed with the same aesthetics. There is nothing left to randomness and every element contributes to comfort and warmth. Heaven 11 – La Zagaleta This stunning modern villa, located in the hills of La Zagaleta, sets the bar even higher for luxury residences on the Costa del Sol. Essentialised architecture, a review and exploration of historic archetypes and classicist principles adapted to the times and needs of contemporary life… The outcome is a modern and elegant masterpiece with exceptional panoramic views of the Mediterranean coast and the mountains from every corner. This is the result of wide openings towards the sea from its main elevation, in contrast to the privacy provided by the rest of the facades, including the house’s entrance. Occupying a 5,000 square metre plot just below the top ridge of the prestigious La Zagaleta estate in Benahavís, Heaven 11 has a built area of over 2,300 square metres on three levels, plus an additional 330 square metres of terraces. The entry level features a dramatic hallway, with twin staircases and lift, opening onto a huge living room with uninterrupted views to the sea. Adjacent there is a second sitting room, dining room and kitchen. An open floor plan enhances the airy feeling and the loft impression. There are also two en-suite rooms on the main floor. Luxury finishes magnify each room. Upstairs, the palatial master bedroom has its own living room, dressing area and

elegant bathroom. Downstairs, there is a state-of-the-art entertainment floor, with bar and lounge area, indoor infinity pool, cinema, gym, wine cellar, office and enough garage space for a car collection. The extensive gardens are fully landscaped with Mediterranean species and the terrace by the outdoor pool and jacuzzi has a chill-out and barbecue area at hand. El Africano The majestic elegance of this villa located in Sotogrande is accentuated by an imposing composition of pure volumes, which are deliberately closed in three of their faces in order to provide privacy to the house, while opening expansively towards the garden and the landscape. Up-to-date aesthetics based on classicist postulates create a perfect balance between tradition and modernity, and an exclusive contemporary dimension. The layout of the project, specially designed for a Mediterranean lifestyle, enables the house to be opened up and “breath” day and night, and allows people to be “inside while being outside”, thank to the massive and pillar-clear covered terraces. The outside of the house is clearly defined by horizontal lines and great roof extensions that frame the façade with pure and depurated shapes. The light reflects the whites and transmits calm and serenity. Inside, the large crystal façades enable the house to become flooded with comfortable light that enters perfectly controlled by the horizontal volumes of the balconies. This duality balances the relationship between the inside and the outside of the house. ARK Arquitectos C.C. Sotomarket, Of. 3, 11310 Sotogrande. INNOVATIVE SHOW FLAT WITH CONTEMPORARY SHADE SOLUTIONS Acoola and Arte Del Lusso Join Forces Acoola, formerly known as Tip Top Shade, are experts in the world of innovative luxury shade solutions for your outdoor living space. Since Belgian entrepreneur Didier Dewyn took over the company two years ago, Acoola has quickly diversified and expanded, venturing into the world of complementary outdoor items such as outdoor furniture and fireplaces. When Didier met Svetlana Dimitrova from Arte del Lusso, it made excellent sense that they would form a working partnership. Arte del Lusso offer shade solutions for inside the home – from curtains and blinds to skylight systems – so between the two companies they collaboratively offer a wide range of contemporary shade solutions for the entire home, inside and out. Didier decided that the best way to highlight their products, and demonstrate how they can come together harmoniously within the home, would be to set up a show flat. This would help clients better visualise how the products look, and see for themselves how the systems work in a real home setting. The show flat itself is set up in the hills in the Selwo area, just 10 minutes from the coast. The overall look of the show flat is extremely welcoming, with a chic contemporary design filled with cutting-edge brands that all complement each other perfectly. You will find Manutti’s Moon Island lounge furniture, Acoola shade sails, camo nets, a HeatSail Dome infrared heater that doubles-up as a lamp, chic dining furniture by Ego Paris, an outdoor floor standing lamp by Royal Botania, the famous OFYR fire pit, which also serves as a barbecue, innovative vertical blinds by Création Baumann and Silent Gliss, sheer curtains, an EcoSmart bioethanol fireplace… the list goes on. If you would like to know more about any aspect of the show flat, visit Svetlana in the Arte del Lusso showroom at the bottom of Calle Lagasca (by BBVA) in San Pedro de Alcántara (www.artedellusso.es); or Didier at the Acoola showroom situated in Calle Luxemburgo in Polígono Industrial San Pedro Alcántara (www.acoola.eu).

Spaces and Projects INTERVIEW WITH DANILO BADULATI. DECODAN INTERIORES

Photos by Johnny Gates

What brought you into this industry? I was born in Argentina, grew up in Italy from four years of age, and I’ve been living in Spain – now my home – for the past 12 years. My great passions include travel, family and new technologies. At a professional level, I graduated with an economics degree because I really like the world of business, and I’m passionate about design and décor, my profession. I began my professional adventure in 2006, selling wardrobes and dressing rooms in a 60 square metre showroom. Thanks to an opportunity I had with a kitchen manufacturer, and the area where I live and work, Estepona, today I am proud to be able to offer high-quality products and top service through Decodan Interiores, my company.

What are your key products and services? Decodan has evolved a great deal over the past few years. I began doing everything: quotes, measurements, supplier orders, installations, handing over the completed project, and thanks to that I know my business and clientele very well. I make a strong effort every day to be a better professional, and I am excited by the fact that every project, space and client is completely different – which is a wonderful challenge. The fact that people open their doors to me to fulfil their little dream, decorating their home, is a fantastic responsibility that I take on with great enthusiasm. I aim to transform projects in accordance with their individual requirements and preferences, as we all appreciate that it will last a long time, and my objective is

to work responsibly and professionally so that clients know they have chosen the right company, Decodan Interiores. We currently have a 180 square metre showroom dedicated to kitchens, wardrobes, dressing rooms, doors, parquet floors and made-to-measure furniture, with a 300 square metre workshop with our own factory plant, and we also work with the market’s leading manufacturers. Drawing on your own experience on the Costa del Sol, what are the main products that people are currently seeking to decorate their homes? At Decodan Interiores, we always follow latest market trends, especially in the kitchen sector. We attend the main national and international fairs, which enables us to offer cutting-edge products to our clients. We have noted that 90 per cent of orders feature modern and minimalist design trends, pure lines and no embossing. The other 10 per cent of clients are particularly fond of classic and rustic styles. Our ongoing desire is that our products are almost “eternal” and that clients can enjoy them as if it were the first day. Then, when they call us again, it is because they need to change their ambience and incorporate new trends. The most important thing is that, whatever they choose, we always offer the support of brands with renowned international prestige, which means we can provide excellent products at competitive prices – all with our finest service. We consider each satisfied client to be an achievement for us. We offer the best

guarantees possible, that of a top team of professionals with extensive experience, and a five-year guarantee where possible, because whenever a client comes to us we aim to resolve any minor incident at no cost. In conclusion, why should a client opt for Decodan? We have been passionate about design and décor for many years, and our company’s significant evolution and great capacity is reflected in the work we do for our clients which, in our honest opinion, is of a high quality. When commissioning Decodan it will be clear from the first moment that we pay meticulous attention to our area of expertise, we have an excellent team, we want our clients to feel comfortable, we view and outline their projects as precisely as possible, and we aim to provide them with everything we can to convert their dreams into reality. We love decoration, and we plan to continue in this field for many more years, offering responsibility, honesty and professionalism. Decodan Interiores Avda. Gourmet Cooking AT CASTILLO DE MONDA

Text by Jaap Schaafsma from Hotel-Restaurant Castillo de Monda Photos by Peter Staes

SLOW COOKED BEEF CHEEK WITH BEETROOT AND A PARSNIP PURÉE INGREDIENTS FOR 4 PEOPLE For beef cheek: 1 kg beef cheeks (4 large or 6 small) 1 onion, roughly diced 1 celery stalk, roughly diced 1 carrot, roughly diced 4 garlic cloves, minced 6 stems of fresh thyme 2 fresh bay leaves 2 stems of fresh rosemary 500 ml beef stock 250 ml red wine (Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot) 1 tbsp. of tomato pure Salt Black pepper For beetroot: 4 large raw beetroots Sea salt For parsnip purée: 4 large parsnips 300 ml milk 1 or 2 tbsp. virgin olive oil Sea salt and white pepper Garnish: Mushrooms or chanterelles Shallots Watercress

INTRUCTIONS Prepare the beef cheeks: cut off any large, fatty pieces. Use the salt and black pepper to season the beef all over. Heat olive oil in a large heavy-based pan (or casserole dish with a lid if you are baking or pot if you are cooking on the stove) over high heat. Sear the beef cheeks on each side until nicely brown. If your pan is not large enough, work in batches rather than crowding the pan. Remove the beef cheeks onto a plate, and loosely cover with foil to keep warm. Turn down the heat to medium high and heat a few drops of olive oil. Add garlic, onion and carrots. Sauté for three minutes until onion is becoming translucent, then add the celery and sauté for a further three minutes. Then add the bay leaf and the rosemary. Add one tablespoon of tomato purée in the mixture and give it a good heat. Add the red wine and beef stock to the mixture and place the beef cheeks back in the pan. Let the beef cheeks simmer in the sauce for about five hours. You can check if they are ready by pinching a pointy knife in the beef check. If they slide off the knife without forcing it, they are perfect. Make sure that the beef cheeks are always under the liquid; otherwise they dry out. When the beef cheeks are ready, carefully take them out of the sauce and place them on a tray to let them cool down. Pour the sauce through a sieve in a pan and reduce the sauce until it thickens. For the purée, peel the skin off the parsnips, and cut them into even pieces. Cook the parsnips in the milk and a pinch of salt. When they are done, pour the parsnips and water through a sieve, and save the cooking liquid. Put the cooked parsnips in a food processor and add the cooking liquid bit by bit until you have a smooth purée that is not thick any more. Press the puree one last time through a sieve with a sauce spoon, to be sure there are no more lumps in the puree.

Baked Beetroot 1. Put the sea salt on an oven tray and place the washed raw beetroot on top of it. 2. Bake in oven on 180 degrees Celsius until they are nicely cooked. 3. Remove the dried skin from the beetroot. 4. Cut in four to five pieces 5. Marinate with a splash of balsamic vinegar and extra virgin olive oil. 6. Heat for serving. Clean the mushrooms/chanterelles with a brush. Heat a pan with a bit of butter then fry a finely diced shallot without colouring. Add the mushrooms/chanterelles and bake in butter. Add a few finely chopped parsley leaves in there. SERVING Make sure everything is warm and ready to serve. Take a big tablespoon and place the parsnip purĂŠe on a side of the plate. Then with the back of the spoon scrape it to the other end of the plate (see picture). This is where you build your dish. Add two or three slices of the beef cheeks that you have seared on both sides on top of the purĂŠe. Then you can place the beetroot and the chanterelles in between and on top of the meat. Pour a bit of the sauce there and around. Garnish with leaves of watercress. Bon apetit! Castillo de Monda Calle Villeta 6, Monda. Tel. (+34) 952 459 836. www.castillodemonda.com

WINE NOTES

Georgia and its Qvevri Wines

By AJ Linn

Georgian Quevri ancient wine vessel (Levan Totosashvili)

Georgia is a fascinating country that can justifiably assert to be the cradle of winemaking. Until recently this claim was contested by next-door Armenia, but new archaeological finds this year have put its history in Georgia as going back 7,0008,000 years. The country is the same size as Andalucía, with fewer than five million inhabitants, unrelated to Russians, Turks or Persians. Actually the Georgians have more in common genetically with the Basques and Corsicans than with any other race. The religion is orthodox Christian and traditions include a sense of hospitality and a unique code of honour. A person is judged by the strength of his friendships. Marbella is twinned with Georgia’s prime Black Sea resort, Batumi, and when the then minister to the presidency, Andro Barnovi, spent a few days in the town a couple of years ago he took time out to visit nearby Ronda wineries. Wine plays an important part in Georgian culture. Most houses make wine for private consumption from home-grown grapes, and what are known as qvevris play a central role. These are clay plots, holding hundreds of litres, built into the floor of the house with only the top being accessible. Grapes are crushed by foot in primitive wooden vessels, and the resulting mush is poured into the qvevri and sealed in for anything from one year to 50 years. The qvevri pot itself take three months to manufacture by hand – if you can find a craftsman to make one. Every year there are fewer, and winemaking in qvevris is classed as a World Heritage item (ICH) by UNESCO. On my last visit to Georgia it was obvious that this centuries-old style of winemaking was not in danger of dying out. Hardly a house I visited did not proffer its homemade wine, admittedly some more drinkable than others. Bearing in mind that most European winemaking countries have around 30-40 native grape varieties, Georgia is calculated to have nearly 600, and there is an ongoing official project to recover them all. There are some excellent products

made commercially for export, although it is clear that there is still some way to go before they will compete with Spanish and Italian wines. The brandy is another matter, and Georgian coñac and Armagnac is justly famous worldwide. The frequent wine wars with Russia always make news and, since this is the country’s main export to its northern neighbour. Russia can exert pressure by limiting or stopping imports, such action having a disastrous effect on a large part of the Georgian economy. During Soviet times the vineyard acreage actually increased, unlike other satellites, as it was Moscow’s favourite wine. For wine-lovers the country has a lot to offer, and bears no similarity to Spain or Italy. There are several commercial producers that make excellent wines by traditional methods, one of the leaders being John Wurdeman, an American who went there in 1996 and stayed. He speaks fluent Georgian, has a Georgian wife and makes organic “Pheasant’s Tears”, using the qvevri technique but filtered and bottled for export to many countries. Georgia has much to offer the visitor, from attractive Black Sea resorts in the west to staggering mountain scenery in the east. But there is no motorway network or regional airports and the trains are slow. There are few direct flights from European destinations but the richness of the country as distinguished by its people, the landscape and the gastronomy makes it incomparable and exciting. Even the cuisine is unique. Walnuts and pomegranates play a big part in many dishes, and the crowning culinary glory, khachapuri, has been described as a molten canoe of carbohydrates and dairy. The oval-shaped loaf is baked with cheese, and just before serving an egg is broken into the top and left to cook in butter. At the table it is for sharing by spoon-wielding devotees. And while the typical Georgian feast is an orgy of eating, drinking and dancing the truth is that the average Georgian is a hard worker not given to lingering over his wine. (Georgian wine can be acquired in Spain online at Uvinum.)

CHILDREN’S CORNER

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF GROWING UP... PREPARING CHILDREN FOR KINDERGARTEN

Encouraging Creative Art Skills By Elena Gatsenko

What have you drawn here? In these amazing times we are witnessing a change in attitudes to fine arts, and to the first attempts at drawing in school and kindergarten. It is no longer a leisure pursuit for the development of fine motor skills. Today paints and pencils help to discover creative skills, to relieve stress, to liberate one’s mind and even to improve one’s self-esteem. This issue I will explain to you how to make this joy of creation available for your children. Firstly, let’s forget about such evaluations as nice/not nice and looking/ not looking alike. According to the world’s most high-priced painter – ground-breaker and nonconformist Pablo Picasso – the “invention of a camera made academic painting a thing of the past”. This does not mean realism is no longer needed, but there are millions of just as effective and sought-after painting techniques. Classic school of art requires obedience, conscientiousness, knowledge of rules and continuous repetitions, which is extremely boring for a five, six or sevenyear old and will make him/her lose a taste for painting for good. One should be grown-up and mature enough for such a serious approach. Until then, vivacious and magical modernism and post-modernism will come in handy. Do you know that Impression, Sunrise by Claude Monet drew strong criticism? Or that global favourite Gustav Klimt was accused of kitsch and pornography? Not to mention the sad story of the unappreciated Van Gogh.

Today a painter invites his/her audience to a dialogue. Revolutionaries and groundbreakers from Kandinsky to Miro knew how to paint with a classical touch, but deliberately refused to do so, seeking new forms and new meanings. Malevich’s Black Square has a complex theoretical basis behind it and is an entire philosophy, revealing incredible depths of work for initiates. In our “Draw as a Genius” school children start to dab in modernism and post-modernism from age one. The main objective is not to show how to draw a house or a dog correctly, but to teach children to enjoy the process, to show that one and the same task can be competed by various drawing techniques. Another peculiarity of the modern approach to teaching kids and especially teenagers to draw, implemented in our original “Draw as a Genius” methodology, is the removal of all blocks and stereotypes of the type “I can’t do it”, “I don’t know how” and, my favourite, “This is not correct”. We play, tell funny and amazing stories from the lives of modernist and post-modernist painters, why and how they invented their own language of painting, and then we proceed not to blind copying, but to creative tasks inspired by and based on such technique. We draw using candles, sponges, hands and even potatoes; we pour paints over the canvas like Jackson Pollock; and make carvings in clay like cave people. This type of drawing is pure pleasure, and each work is a little masterpiece and by no means boring homework. I believe that academic painting is wonderful but one

136 JANUARY & FEBRUARY 2018

Health & Beauty HL55.indd 136

20/12/17 18:14

should go into it deliberately and out of love, not before he/she is 10 years old. Don’t be disappointed by your child if the dog he/she drew has eight legs or the house looks smaller than the girl; and, God forbid, don’t play at being a home-grown therapist. Children aged three to four prefer the most contrasting combinations. The main thing is black paint on a white sheet. Don’t be afraid. Red and black lightning spread over a green background is just an expression of the passing mood. Maybe your child was just dusted with sand by his playmate and he showed his indignation on the sheet. You have reason to worry if lots of scary drawings appear on and on for a couple of weeks! How should one teach a child? Enjoy the process together with your child – no rulers or colouring books! Suggest a game – make collages, tear apart an old slick magazine, and draw your own images on pieces of coloured photos. Put on raincoats and sprinkle paints over sheets spread on the ground. Make a new pack for your favourite cornflakes; collect pebbles on the beach and draw secret marks on them. Don’t forget to make a home exhibition – on the window, on the fridge using magnets, or in a large frame. Offer various formats to your young painter – from a regular sheet of paper to a roll of wallpaper or a giant fridge package. Or join our “Draw as a Genius school. We have groups for little children, schoolchildren and even family master-classes for children and their parents. And remember the words of art brut founder Jean Dubuffet: “Only primitive people, madmen and children are able to create true pure art.” Clinical psychologist Elena Gatsenko is a head of the pacesetting poly-lingual International Kids Club, where her interactive rubric “kindergarten” is dedicated to questions of early development and education of pre-schoolers. HEALTH & BEAUTY

BE THE MASTER OF YOUR DREAMS By Rachel Garrod

In this issue I’ve decided to talk about a fascinating subject that is gaining real credence within the scientific and health world. Lucid dreaming – have you heard about it? It refers to being consciously aware of your dreaming self, what and when you are dreaming. Studies suggest that one in five people actually experience a lucid dream at least once a month. These lucid dreamers tell us that they know they are in a dream and are often able to redirect and alter that dream, whilst remaining asleep. It’s almost as if they act as a film director instructing their characters, or themselves, to fly or jump over buildings or any other impossible thing the imagination can conjure. A recent study from Germany has shown that during lucid dreaming the brain shows activity of Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, our normal state when dreaming, as well as aspects of waking consciousness. There is increased activity in the frontal and temporal lobes during lucid dreaming compared with normal dreaming. And, as if being the architect of your own dreams isn’t fabulous enough, researchers are now finding health benefits: reduced depression or minimising the symp-

toms of conditions such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The effects of lucid dreaming appear to translate into tangible physical benefits too. For instance, it seems that athletes who are able to implement lucid dreaming and train whilst dreaming may be able to improve their performance in reality. In one study, participants were told to practise throwing balls into a cup whilst lucid dreaming. Those who were able to master the lucid dreaming, and practice, performed better on the exercise the following day than those who were unable to do so. You can teach yourself to lucid dream, although I suspect it is harder than the numerous internet self-help guides and YouTube videos would have you believe. However, electric stimulation of the brain at 40 Hertz does appear to trigger lucid dreaming and is being used therapeutically. Still, if you don’t fancy that, try repeatedly telling yourself that you will recognise when you are dreaming, before falling asleep. This mind training technique is thought to facilitate the process. So, here’s to being the master of your own dreams.

The Benefits of Olive Oil AND VACCINE BREAKTHROUGH Medical Minutes by John Schieszer

OLIVES AND OLIVE OIL MAY HELP PREVENT DIABETES Biochemists in the United States at Virginia Tech University have been dipping into the health benefits of olives and olive oil and discovered that the olive-derived compound oleuropein appears to help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. The health benefits of olives and associated natural products such as olive oil have long been recognised and touted by proponents of the Mediterranean diet. However, until now little has been known about what specific compounds and biochemical interactions in the fruit contribute to its medical benefits. It is believed to produce benefits in terms of weight loss and prevention of type 2 diabetes. The investigators discovered that the olive-derived compound oleuropein helps the body secrete more insulin, a central signalling molecule in the body that controls metabolism. The same compound also detoxifies another signalling molecule called amylin, which increases production and forms harmful aggregates in type 2 diabetes. In these two distinct ways, oleuropein appears to help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. The findings, which were recently published in the journal Biochemistry, could help improve understanding of the scientific basis of health benefits of olive products and develop new, low-cost nutraceutical strategies to fight type 2 diabetes and related obesity. “Our work provides new mechanistic insights into the long-standing question of why olive products can be anti-diabetic,” said lead study author Bin Xu, who is an assistant professor of biochemistry in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech. “We believe it will not only contribute to the biochemistry of the functions of the olive component oleuropein, but also have an impact on the general public to pay more attention to olive products in light of the current diabetes epidemic.”

NEW PNEUMONIA VACCINE IN THE WORKS A new vaccine is now under development that could put an end to pneumonia. The scientists developing the new vaccine report that it provides the most comprehensive coverage to date and alleviates antimicrobial concerns. Deaths due to pneumonia have steadily declined for the past 15 years because of better access to antibiotics and improved nutrition. However, pneumonia vaccines have also played a large role. Introduced in the early 2000s, these vaccines target up to 23 of the most deadly forms of the bacterium that causes pneumonia (Streptococcus pneumoniae). Now, a new vaccine under development could deal another blow to the disease, lowering the number of deaths even further by targeting dozens of additional strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae. The development of this vaccine also takes into account expected future versions of the bacteria responsible for pneumococcal disease, which includes sepsis and meningitis. The vaccine provoked an immune response to 72 forms of Streptococcus pneumoniae in lab tests on animals, according to new research published in the journal Science Advances. “We’ve made tremendous progress fighting the spread of pneumonia, especially among children. But if we’re ever going to rid ourselves of the disease we need to create smarter and more cost-effective vaccines,” said study co-lead author Blaine Pfeifer, PhD, who is an associate professor of chemical and biological engineering at the University at Buffalo’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences in New York.

Secluded in the exclusive Alpine hamlet of Oberlech, this Austrian “voralberger”-style winter retreat might look classic from the outside but, once ensconced within, one discovers an über-secure, high-tech, ultra-luxury world where billionaires’ bling harmonises with chic chalet style. With all the glamour, opulence and sparkle of a James Bond mountain hideaway, Chalet N’s designer style is captivating. Found slope-side in the snow-packed landscape of Lech, one of the most upscale ski resort communities in Europe, this contemporary 11-suite retreat offers a totally unique experience for privileged guests. During your stay, expect a private butler; your own gourmet chef preparing personalised fine-dining menus; spa and fitness professionals always at the ready; and a discreet housekeeping staff that even goes to the length of embroidering your initials on the high-thread count pillow cases of your king-size bed. The alluring interior design is by landau + kindelbacher. Natural materials of reclaimed wood and rare stone combine with luxury textures of silk, velvet, leather and fine linens. The palette of bold, rich tones is lifted by the shimmer of glass, crystal and Venetian mirror furniture. Private ski guides are available to entice you out of this pine palace onto the slopes of the Arlberg mountain region. At the end of the day, indulge in après ski pampering treatments; enjoy the ice-cave, steam bath or Finnish sauna; and refresh in the designer spa shower, surrounded by Swarovski crystals. The private cinema is waiting for a post dinner flick. The luxurious ambience is further punctuated with yet more extravagant details. Take, for example, the sumptuous private owner’s suite, furnished with handmade silk rugs, encrusted with tiny crystals; or the bespoke stalactite light installation that hangs over the hotel-quality spa pool. The wine cellar might have some of the world’s finest vintages, but don’t expect cobwebs and dust here – instead the glint of polished metal and the warmth of honey-coloured pine combine to create an intimate space for wine tastings or a romantic dinner. Enjoying the fabulously decadent Chalet N this winter comes at a price: a cool €490,000 per week. Chalet N is bookable through www.OxfordSki.com.

Aston Martin Valkyrie DESIGN SECRETS REVEALED

144 JANUARY & FEBRUARY 2018

Open Road HL55.indd 144

20/12/17 18:23

Aston Martin, Red Bull Advanced Technologies and project partner AF Racing have been working intensively to further develop the Valkyrie hypercar’s aerodynamics, body styling and cockpit packaging. As Matt Hill, Aston Martin’s creative director of interiors, said of the Valkyrie’s cockpit design, “It’s been a tremendous challenge to make the interior packaging work. We’ve embraced Red Bull Racing’s Formula One ethos and approached from a different angle than conventional road car design. In this instance, we’ve started from a position where you think something is impossible and work at it until you find a way to make it work. “We’ve been fighting for millimetres everywhere, but the battle has been worth it, as it’s been fantastic seeing customers try the interior buck for size. They love the ritual of getting in and how it feels to be sat behind the wheel. They’re also genuinely surprised at how the car just seems to swallow them. You really do have to sit in it to believe there is genuine space for two large adults.” The teardrop-shaped cockpit’s upper body surfaces and lower tub contours are described by the designers as following the envelope of space available between the huge full-length Venturi tunnels that run either side of the cockpit floor. “Drawing huge quantities of air beneath the car to feed the rear diffuser, these tunnels are the key to generating the Aston Martin Valkyrie’s extraordinary levels of downforce while keeping the upper body surfaces free from additional aerodynamic devices that would spoil the purity of the styling. “To maximise interior space the seats are mounted directly to the tub, with occupants adopting a reclined ‘feet-up’ position reminiscent of today’s Formula One and Le Mans Prototype race cars, ensuring driver and passenger are extremely safe, perfectly supported and feel completely at one with the car. A four-point harness comes as standard, while an optional six-point harness will be offered for those who intend to do more track driving.” Keen to keep distractions to a minimum and focus the driver on the road ahead, the design team decided to locate all switchgear on the steering wheel, with the vital signs shown on a single OLED display screen. The steering wheel is also detachable, both to aid ingress and egress, and to serve as an additional security device. Great attention has been taken with the glasshouse design to ensure forward and peripheral side-to-side vision is virtually uninterrupted. “To avoid any unwanted aerodynamic disturbance or stylistic ‘clutter’, traditional door mirrors have been replaced by discreetly mounted rear facing cameras in each of the Aston Martin Valkyrie’s flanks. These feed two displays which are positioned at the base of each A-post to mimic the view provided by conventional door mirrors. The all-enveloping bodywork and roof-mounted engine air intake means there is no rear window, negating the requirement for a rearview mirror.” The essence of the original Aston Martin Valkyrie exterior design remains unchanged, but a pursuit of downforce and aerodynamic efficiency (by Red Bull chief technical officer Adrian Newey) prompted many detail changes to the bodywork. One of the biggest changes in this latest model are openings in the body surface between the cockpit and front wheel arches. It was then the job of the design team to integrate these new apertures into the overall design and ensure they had aesthetic merit as well as aerodynamic function. While aerodynamics and downforce are “the dominant story”, Aston Martin Valkyrie features other attractive details. The headlights, for example, take inspiration from the pure functionality of a Formula One car’s components; and the same approach was taken with the Aston Martin “wings” badge that adorns the nose. “With the regular badge considered too heavy, and a simple sticker not befitting for a car of the Aston Martin Valkyrie’s quality and cuttingedge nature, the Aston Martin design team came up with a chemical etched aluminium badge just 70 microns thick. That’s 30 per cent thinner than a human hair, and a remarkable 99.4 per cent lighter than the regular enamel wings badge.” The badge (nicknamed the “lacewing”) is then attached to the painted body and covered with a perfectly smooth coat of lacquer.

Exclusive Jeff Koons Masterpieces AT VERTIGO IN MARBELLA

20/12/17 18:26

His work has gained iconic status in the global art world, and now some of his finest limited edition pieces are available on the Costa del Sol at Vertigo. Located in Marbella Club Hotel, the gallery is the only one selling art from Jeff Koons in Spain at the moment, in collaboration with Bernardaud. They are so popular, in fact, that some limited edition pieces have almost been sold out before arriving at the shop. Born in York (Pennsylvania) in 1955, Koons studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Since his first solo exhibition in 1980, Koons’ work has been shown in major galleries and institutions throughout the world, including exhibitions organised by the Whitney Museum of American Art, Jeff Koons: A Retrospective, which travelled to the Centre Pompidou Paris in 2014 and the Guggenheim Bilbao in 2015. Koons is widely known for his iconic sculptures Rabbit and Balloon Dog, as well as the monumental floral sculpture Puppy (1992), permanently installed at the Guggenheim Bilbao. Incorporating the vocabulary of his iconic Celebration sculptures, Balloon Monkey, Balloon Rabbit and Balloon Swan marked a new chapter in Jeff Koons’ oeuvre. As his website notes, “Whether it is the seductive reflective surface, the intricate knots, creases or twists, no detail of the work was compromised in rendering these balloon animals in porcelain. Koons, intrigued by Limoges porcelain, partnered with Bernardaud to realise this complex work. For over 150 years, Bernardaud has worked with the most skilled artisans at their workshop in Limoges and most recently created new technologies to achieve the porcelain Balloon Swan (Yellow), Balloon Monkey (Blue) and Balloon Rabbit (Red) by Jeff Koons.” An inflatable elephant was one of the first inflatables Jeff Koons worked with when he first moved to New York as a young artist in the late seventies. Initially chosen by Koons for its visual intensity, Elephant is described as “a mirror-polished stainless steel sculpture with stencils of colours broken down to look like the original inflatable toy and applied in transparent colour”. Elephant comes after the Koon’s Celebration series but also incorporates aspects of the iconic Rabbit from the Statuary series in 1986.

The elephant is a common motif in the work of Jeff Koons. From its first appearance as an inflatable toy in his studio, the elephant form re-occurs in various forms in works such as a large-scale stainless steel sculpture within the Celebration series, a brightly coloured Easyfunanimal mirror, and imagery within the painting Elephants, in the EasyfunEthereal series. His works have sold for substantial sums, including Balloon Dog (Orange), which reached US$58.4 million at Christie’s Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Sale in New York City in 2013, becoming the most expensive work by a living artist sold at auction. www.vertigo-marbella.com

Sumptuous Pictorial Story BEHIND REPUBLIC OF FRITZ HANSEN

A coffee table book newly published by teNeues features 150 photographs showcasing the history of exclusive Copenhagen-based furniture brand Republic of Fritz Hansen. Founded in 1872 by Fritz Hansen, and family-run until 1979, the company introduced new production processes in the first half of the 20th century. It produced the first steam-bent wooden chair in 1915, and entered into creative partnerships with celebrated architects and designers. Today, Fritz Hansen remains true to its heritage while looking to the future, with shops and showrooms across the globe (including the Costa del Sol) as well as timeless and customised furniture developed in collaboration with top designers, for both public and private spaces. “In Perfect Shape” (€49.90) features “the marvellous pieces of furniture that have made the company so revered, and provides examples of how a single piece of furniture can beautify an entire room or building and spur the imagination of the people who live there”. According to the publishers, “When you step into the headquarters of the Repub-

lic of Fritz Hansen in Allerød, north-west of Copenhagen, you are breathing in the spirit of a company that has made design history. HUMILOGIC ESPAÑA

Easy Solutions for Moisture and Damp Problems It doesn’t matter how stunning your home is: you can still suffer problems related to moisture and damp. With Humilogic, those issues can be resolved easily and effectively. According to their professional team, damp, moisture or wetness have three consequences: aesthetic problems (humidity stains), structural problems and health problems. “Clients only know about these problems because they see aesthetic issues,” says director Carles Rodríguez Surrallés, “so one of my functions is to educate my clients. When it comes to anti-humidity treatments, for example, our marketing campaigns have tended to feature pictures of stains, because people can then understand quickly what problems we need to resolve. But these are quite ugly and shocking images, so we have changed our message and now focus on health.” To that end, Humilogic can offer better air quality options for homes on the Costa del Sol – “the definitive solution for damp, moisture and wetness, to provide you and your family with a healthier environment”. Their cutting-edge technical options include the use of the VMI Urban smart machine from Ventilairsec, which detects problem areas – including using a zoom inside mattresses. The inaugural edition of the DOM3 Award in 2014 was centred on the construction of a villa in La Zagaleta (Benahavís municipality) and the second award in 2016 on developing a plot of land in the Santa Clara area in Marbella. Now, for the 2018 award, entrants will be focusing on the third key municipality within DOM3’s area of expertise, Estepona. The final result will be announced during a gala presentation in June 2018, and the prize-winner will have the opportunity of working with the team that eventually develops the Estepona project. According to the DOM3 president, landscape architect Laura Pou, the objective of this new edition of the architecture award is to further boost its prestige. Last year, for example, 140 entries were received from 25 international cities, representing 17 different nationalities. DOM3 (www.dome3.es) comprises a group of 30 companies involved with the design, development, construction and marketing of luxury properties, mainly located in Marbella, Estepona and Benahavís, and committed to promoting initiatives that enhance the competitiveness of businesses in the sector and encourage public authorities to recognise the importance of quality as a driving force behind projects in this area. EXPERT ADVICE

Using a Digital Certificate in Spain Article supplied by Welex Lawyers & Accountants

A digital certificate is needed to identify yourself on the internet and to conduct any kind of formal transaction or business. By using the digital certificate, your personal data is protected each time you want to make an online transaction. The digital certificate is available for both natural persons and legal entities. To obtain a digital certificate in Spain, you have to go to the website of the Spanish National Mint, where you obtain a unique number that you must keep. With this number, you can access a public institution – such as the Spanish tax office, local town hall or social security department – where you will receive your digital certificate. The digital signature can be downloaded to your computer from the website where you originally requested the number: that is, the Spanish National Mint. With this digital certificate, the Spanish Mint offers an easy way to guarantee communications between companies, citizens, institutions and public administrations. What transactions can be carried out with the digital certificate? The different types of formalities that can be done with a digital certificate depend on the various administrations (at na-

tional, regional and local levels). With the digital certificate, you can carry out different transactions on the websites of public institutions, such as any formal type of declaration to the Spanish tax office, social security department or companies house. Obtaining your digital certificate means increasing the efficiency of transactions and simplifying bureaucratic formalities in Spain. At Welex, we can make a formal request and obtain the digital certificate, both for natural persons and legal entities. We will go with you to the Spanish tax office or the town hall where you need to present your passport or identity card. Welex can present any tax return with the digital certificate and even verify your tax situation in Spain. It is important to verify your “status” at the Spanish tax office. That is to say, you must verify that your fiscal situation and residence matches the one mentioned in the databases of the Spanish tax office. The digital certificate is valid for three years. After this period you must renew it.
