The Salone Internazionale del Mobile invariably provides invaluable new insight into home décor and design trends. This year, for example, the annual showcase in Milan posed the question, “What approach will design take in 2018?” And the answer? “There is no one single approach, but many different, if not radically different, design approaches.” According to the creative team behind the Salone, “The lack of a well-defined trend should be seen as the driving trend… There have been many and varied style approaches in 2018, from organicism to a return to the classic, a search for purity or fantasy and, within each different strand, there are designers from the most diverse cultural and geographical contexts. This sends a clear message that creatives all over the world are guided by their ‘reference tribes’, moving endlessly around a global market in which localisms appear, from a creative point of view at least, to be on the wane. “The definitions that attempted to identify ‘national styles’… now appear meaningless. Now, with all due respect to the purists, it would be perfectly possible to find a German designer working for a Greek company drawing on a Scandinavian lexicon… Equally, in the design world, the term ethnic is declined in a Marco Polo-esque dream that blends Africa and the East, Lapland and Peru together like spices.” Getting down to specifics, the Salone noted, “There are few references to the so-called white cube, now usurped by rooms (the loft concept is now extremely passé) steeped in shades of pink/red and grey/petroleum. Furniture, lamps and objects adapt perforce to this mood, ‘warming up’ their images with fine woods, precious finishes, enveloping fabrics and, especially, a very particular kind of tactility. Furnishing in 2018 demands to be caressed by the eye as well as by the hand.” While the Salone’s general overview about the current “cultural crossing” of design was illuminating – especially for Costa del Sol professionals whose creativity and innovation is significantly influenced by the area’s own diverse cosmopolitan melting pot and ambience – for many of those attending the fair the most inspiring and enduring image of this year’s 57th edition in April was provided by “Living Nature”. The “intelligent universe” was presented as an opportunity to venture closer to nature, enjoy rare emotional and multi-sensory beauty, and reflect on the opportunities for sustainability in contemporary living. With its four climatic microcosms, representing all four seasons of the year co-existing alongside each other, the 500 square metre area allowed visitors to discover new scenarios and eco-systems: from winter’s snowy white mantle to the gentle hues of spring; from vivid summer colours to autumnal yellow and orange. The aim with Living Nature, explained the Salone, was to shine the spotlight on a key issue facing design today and into the future: how to make creativity and innovation compatible with nature, energy consumption control, and the use of sustainable recyclable and non-polluting materials and techniques.

THRILLING GRILLING
Living in southern Europe allows for al fresco dining – and that usually entails a barbecue! There are some interesting new ideas for grilling that are not only fun and easy to use but also visually attractive and highly durable, meaning they are more weather resistant and therefore also great investments. Opposite Page Above The Big Green Egg has a stainless-steel cooking grid and external temperature gauge, while its “eggcessories” include a nest, table, charcoal and convector. Company engineers incorporated new types of ceramics, based on materials initially developed by NASA, making it highly durable, and the signature green colour will not fade in the sun due to its hard-coat porcelain glaze. It offers superlative heat insulation and its state-of-the-art ceramics, patented draft door and vent cap all allow for a wide range of cooking temperatures from a searingly high heat to low-andslow smoking. The Big Green Egg is available from Outdoor Concepts at the top of the Boulevard in San Pedro de Alcántara (www.outdoorconcepts.es). Below The Viking Professional 5 Series free-standing grill offers premium cooking for al fresco dining. It comes with a cast brass burner and one ProSear 2™ burner, a dual-position rotisserie with heavy-duty, 3-speed
motor and rear infrared burner, a hot surface ignition system, a premium smoker box, stainless steel grilling grates and a grill cart – plus much more. Available from Mercasur in Pol. Ind. Estepona (www.mercasurestepona.com) and Decodan Interiores in Avda. Juan Carlos I in Estepona (www.decodaninteriores.com). This Page The innovative OFYR offers an exceptional al fresco cooking experience that invites people to come together and enjoy grilling in a social dynamic. The cylindrical design allows for this barbecue to also serve as a firepit, giving the OFYR two functional uses. The wide rim around its circumference is ideal for cooking food on a lower heat whilst the central grill over the flames is better for cooking at a very high temperature. Underneath, there is a space to store logs for easy access. Available from Acoola in Pol. Ind. San Pedro de Alcántara (www.acoola.eu).

MIGHTY LIGHTING Lighting is a key factor in creating an ambience, whether it is inside your home or outside. If you want to put lights amongst your plants in the garden (or inside for that matter), highlight your favourite painting with a wall lamp, have a showy chandelier to wow your guests in the living room or simply enjoy soft, soothing lighting in your bedroom, there are many aspects to consider when buying lamps.
Vibia’s Break outdoor lighting range features a Xuclà & Alemany design. Its cubic sculpture is minimalistic, almost futuristic, in its design and integrates perfectly within the outdoor environment. Vibia is available from Femont Galvan in the Marbella Club (www.femontgalvan.com), UDesign in Pol. Ind. San Pedro de Alcántara (www.udesign.es) and Ges Lighting (previously Direco Lighting) in Pol. Ind. La Ermita in Marbella (www.grupoelectrostocks.com)

Right Marset’s Tam Tam, featured here in Paloma Picasso’s home, has been compared to a juicy bunch of grapes, Nick Mason’s drums from Pink Floyd and the constellation of Perseus. WALLS to worship We can never get enough of wallpapers as we are constantly discovering interesting collections that can all be purchased here on the Coast! In 2018, nature still seems to be a strong subject theme in wallpaper designs and it is showing little sign of going away any time soon. From exotic birds and animals to tropical plants and wild flowers, the depiction of nature is a firm favourite with many of the wallpaper designers. As feature walls are becoming almost commonplace, bold patterns such as geometric designs and large murals are now more popular, giving a focal point to the room and even an artistic statement. If a cutting-edge look is more your preference, there are now three-dimensional wallcoverings which look exquisitely futuristic and make a real talking piece. The Galva Sonja range by Jakob Schlaepfer packs a punch of colour, making any wall a true work of art. Available from Vertigo in the Marbella Club (www.vertigo-marbella.com).

Your bathroom is an intimate space where you need to feel sanitary and relaxed. Technology, cabinetry, artwork, chandeliers and furniture items are starting to move into the bathroom, making it an area that is not just functional anymore – but also a room to enjoy.
This contemporary design for the Immersion bathtub for Agape was inspired by traditional timber bathing vessels used in Japan and China. It is deeper than a standard bathtub, so you bathe in a more upright position than reclined. Agape is available from Puya in Pol. Ind. La Ermita in Marbella (www.puya.es).

with a little more‌ Homes in Spain do not always have to come with the customary marble or tiled floors. There are other options such as wood, porcelain and laminate that can look exceptional and be just as durable as the traditional floor materials usually seen in Spain. VILLA SOTOGRANDE GOLF
BATHED IN NATURAL LIGHT
The villa featured here is located in a sublime haven of peace, where architecture coexists in tune with the environment – using a common language of design geometries. The majestic elegance of this Sotogrande home is enhanced by an imposing composition of pure volumes, which are enclosed within three of their faces in order to provide the property with complete privacy – while remaining open towards the garden and surrounding landscape. Its cutting-edge aesthetics are based on classicist postulates, thus achieving a perfect balance between tradition and modernity and an exclusive contemporary dimension. Specially designed for a Mediterranean lifestyle, the layout of the project allows the house to be open and “breathe” both day and night, with the interior merging into the exterior, thanks to expansive and pillar-free covered terraces. The outside of the house is clearly defined by horizontal lines and stunning roof extensions that frame the façade with pure and depurated shapes. The light reflects the white hues and transmits calm and serenity. Inside, the attractive glass façades enable the house to become flooded with natural light that is controlled by the horizontal volumes of the balconies. This duality balances the relationship between the interior and exterior areas of the villa. The villa’s exceptional personality creates a private space conveniently situated close to the renowned Sotogrande luxury beach environment,
surrounded by golf courses. Each room features a unique style where sensations change depending on the time of day and the amount of light entering. This subsequently allows all those living in the home to enjoy special spaces and corners that offer a constant journey of discovery and many pleasant surprises. ARK Architects is a boutique architecture studio that analyses every detail to ensure it is aligned with the lifestyle of the villa’s owner. To that end, elements such as light and opening up the interior areas towards the outdoor spaces have to be perfectly coordinated. The Reynaers Aluminium systems used in this villa are CP 68 and CS 77-HV. The innovative technology of the CP 68 sliding system for windows and doors ensures the best performance available in the market. The folding doors and windows of the CS 77-HV system (Hidden Vent) accentuate the residents’ appreciation of the enclosure’s frame, as the shutter is completely hidden by it – an important minimalist aspect that provides for even more spectacular exterior views. Moncada Aluminum, a member of Reynaers’ Installer network – responsible for the manufacture and installation of systems for windows, doors and sliding doors – was involved with the project on the construction site. AALTO EXCLUSIVE DESIGN
AN INNOVATIVE FUSION OF EXCLUSIVE DESIGN AND LUXURY FURNITURE CRAFTSMANSHIP Interview with Ness Yammine (Chairman of the Board of Management) and Jana Novakova (Interior Designer)
What is Aalto Exclusive Design (AALTO) and how did it come about? Ness Yammine: AALTO is an International design studio based in Marbella with a multi-brand showroom on the Golden Mile, co-founded by renowned designer José Antonio Flores. The company was born from the fusion of design and craftsmanship, associating furniture design with a luxury furniture manufacturing plant to produce the “AALTO Collection”, composed of over 60 pieces of exclusive furniture. Today AALTO has grown to become a onestop design service centre for both professional and private clients, handling residential and commercial projects. Tell us about your showroom and what will we find there… Jana Novakova: Our showroom is an eye-catching mix of our own furniture collection in high-quality wood and lacquers and a careful selection of other major European brands, which we prescribe in our interior design projects or propose in the showroom. The showroom displays more than just furniture; you can find decorative lighting, upholstery, decorations, art pieces and a selection of finishing materials – fabrics, wallpapers, paints, flooring, rugs, etc., all what you need to get inspired for your interior design project.
What is your inspiration and where do you collect your furniture and objects from? JN: We like to combine and alternate design styles to create attractive unexpected combinations, exploring past and present design and architecture. We experiment a lot by mixing hues, textures and patterns in order to blend them in an attractive mix. The inspiration usually comes from various sources, starting from new collections of wallpapers or fabrics, fashion trends, shapes in nature, travelling etc. There is “design potential” basically anywhere. We also work side by side with clients, listen to what they want to implement in their interiors, and build design concepts tailor-made to our client’s style, likings and budgets. We do not necessarily follow design trends, and are always keen to explore artisanal work of local artists and the latest collections from all major high-end furniture brands. We have a lot of objects in the showroom with their own history; we dedicate a lot of time sourcing original art and décor from all corners of the world. Attention to detail is key. Can you describe what projects and services you offer? NY: As mentioned earlier, AALTO has become a one-stop hub for design services where we offer tailor-made solutions accommodating specific requests

and finding design solutions for our clients. We take advantage of our own manufacturing plant to offer bespoke furniture and bespoke projects. We provide a wide range of services to professionals in the sector such as developers, architects, builders, realtors, etc., and support them in their efforts to attend their clients, providing among many other services architectural plans, 3D photorealistic visualisations and furnishing packs for show flats. We also design and produce furniture, and create interior design concepts for both residential and commercial projects for our own clients. What can we expect in the future from Aalto Exclusive Design? NY: We strongly believe in the brand and have great ambitions, expanding the Aalto Exclusive Design Collection to 100 items, introducing new materials such as marble, brass, copper or glass. We are expanding our international presence within Europe and the U.S., both through licensing agreements for new showrooms as well as through a network of agents and distributors. We want to keep continuing building our strength in high-quality design services for both professional and private clients. In Conclusion‌ JN: If you are looking for help with your design project, or just to select a special piece of furniture and a friendly team of professionals to attend you, do call us or better yet come and visit our 750 square metre showroom located on the Golden Mile. We look forward to creating your dream homes together. NY: I want to take this opportunity to thank Home & Lifestyle Magazine for their coverage of the first Marbella Design fair, where AALTO were the first interior design studio to have a stand; and especially to thank the more than 200 professional and private guests who attended our afterwork party held at our showroom celebrating the design fair. Their presence and support meant a lot to us. Clients’ satisfaction, at the end, is the only criteria that matters. Aalto Exclusive Design Avda. Bulevar PrĂncipe Alfonso de Hohenlohe, Urb. PERSONALISED STYLING
FOR INTERIOR DESIGN PROJECTS IN MARBELLA Interview with Marie Poirier, Project Manager
Tell us about the new services you are offering this year… Our showroom in Marbella offers fully integrated decoration services for residential projects, aimed at our clients on the Málaga coastline and in surrounding areas. After years of experience in the world of textile decoration, providing an extensive range of exclusive international brands for our projects, we have created an updated area in our Avda. Ricardo Soriano store to showcase the finest interior design services in the Marbella area. What services and products are available at the Ricardo Soriano showroom? We are basically a decoration shop, with a concept dedicated to interior design in all its facets. Clients can, for example, buy some wonderful candles by Manuel Cánovas, some alpaca blankets or some cushions by L. Rubelli, whether it be simply a personal desire to find a nice object for their home or a gift for a friend. If they are seeking an idea to re-distribute their home space, a lighting project adapted to their home or advice on the style of their home, we have a team of experts who can help with everything they need. From the purchase of a sofa from our collection of exclusive models to the measurement, preparation and placement of blinds, curtains and or headboards, as well as the design of carpentry shutters for windows or porches, we are able to prepare a budget and take care of the installation of all decorative elements. How would you describe Gastón y Daniela’s decorative style? Our hallmark is in adapting to the needs of each client and each project. Our maxim is to offer a personalised study of the requirements of a specific idea, and subsequently ensure the best results, be it a relaxed residential environment by the sea or an urban property with a contemporary look. The collections we distribute showcase this. Fabrics from Larsen, Sahco Hesslein, Alcantara, Loro Piana, Manuel Canovas, L. Rubelli, Brochier, etc., symbolise the best examples of excellence in the world of modern and high-end decoration that can be found in the market. However, none of these products, neither the most expensive nor the most exclusive, can be selected correctly without a team of professionals to help clients make the best decision. Our procedure is very simple: we contact you immediately to arrange a first interview where we can clarify all your queries about our services and price rates. SPLENDOUR NEAR THE CITY CENTRE A SUMPTUOUS SENSE OF SERENITY Two partner villas: impressive project on Marbella’s most prestigious hillside
Marbella is home to many stunning locations, but there are few as exceptional as this one. Situated in an ultra-select hillside setting in the internationally renowned municipally, these outstanding villas offer magnificent south-facing panoramic views over the Mediterranean Sea. They are a convenient five-minute drive from the city centre and just three minutes to a heliport (exclusively for private use), nestled in lush surroundings with verdant vegetation on a sprawling 6,334 square metre plot that provides absolute privacy. Within these paradisiacal surroundings, the two properties are highlighted by refined quality standards throughout and a diverse range of elegantly designed features including high ceilings, limestone flooring and custom cherry cabinetry. The open-plan and light-flooded interiors in each villa are highlighted by an exquisite design that leaves nothing to be desired. This is amply reflected in spacious living rooms with fireplaces, office/libraries, fully fitted kitchens and five bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. Other top-class features include under-floor heating, air-conditioning, double-glazing, alarm system, dressing room, entertainment room, storerooms, laundry, wine cellar, service apartment, safe, sauna, gym and pool.
There are some differences in layout, qualities and decoration styles distinguishing the two villas, and each property has its own title deed. They can be purchased separately (A. €7,600,000 and B. €6,600,000) or now – as a rare opportunity – both together. SALONE INTERNAZIONALE DEL MOBILE SHOWCASE FOR DESIGN CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION IN MILAN
For the 57th edition of the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, the organisers decided to reprise the founding values of the event and its powerful links with Milan. To that end, the pillar of the 2018 edition was its first Manifesto: “a declaration of intent geared to channelling the forces in Milan to work together to preserve the leadership role of both the event and the city, and attract ideas, projects and new resources”. The Salone and International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition were split into various style categories (Classic: Tradition in the Future, Design and xLux) and joined by the biennial EuroCucina exhibition – together with its collateral event FTK (Technology For the Kitchen) – and the International Bathroom Exhibition, as well as SaloneSatellite. The main Salone showcased a vast and varied range of styles featuring “increasingly sophisticated, fluid and almost sartorial products, geared to respond to the individual requirements of every client”. EuroCucina and FTK (Technology For the Kitchen) were set up to “confirm the extraordinarily liveliness of a segment which has an excellent manufacturing system behind it, one that has always worked, right from the beginning and with huge commitment on innovation, technology, product quality and display”. The International Bathroom Exhibition was said to “bear witness
to two years of hugely dynamic growth, in a sector that is now working on the issue of sustainable quality”. Its commitment involves taking on board all aspects of sustainable manufacturing – from design and industrial development to financial planning, marketing and the communication process and post-sales service. “This culminates in design that incorporates the principles of the circular economy and translates into green-orientated, ethically responsible products that are increasingly research-centred.” SaloneSatellite hosted 650 talented young professionals who presented work spanning “heritage and contemporaneity, the new technologies and craftsmanship, a mix of experimentation, memory, nature and the force of matter, anthropomorphism, creative recycling, cross-pollination and digital effects, all with the power to amaze and excite”. Finally, underscoring its links with Milan, the Salone brought the Living Nature (“la natura dell’abitare”) project into the city. Developed in partnership with the Carlo Ratti Associati (CRA) international design and innovation studio, it was located in Piazza del Duomo and presented a laboratory combining design, engineering and botany “to test ways in which a space, be it domestic or urban, can be made more human-friendly by harnessing natural resources in a sustainable manner”.

Gardens
COLOUR COMBINATIONS coming out of spring and into summer By Alia Babapulle
I thought I would write about using colours in your gardens in this article. Colour is very important to show off the garden to its best advantage. One natural way to combine colours in the garden is to choose complementary ones. That means selecting plants in colours that are across from one another on the colour wheel. For example, red is across from green, orange is across from blue and yellow is across from purple. Garden colours can transform any space and show off your personal taste. Whatever colour you love, there are plants and ideas to make your landscape the most beautiful you could wish for. Warm colours appear closer than they are while cool colours seem further away. When this is taken into consideration, a small garden can actually look much bigger than it is. My own garden is not a large space but I have masses of pots of beautiful flowering plants and shrubs in just a few colours: fuchsia, purples from pale to very dark, dark blue and just a touch of white. This way, the small space is not cluttered with many colours and looks cohesive. The herbs are in a spot all by themselves. “Hot” colours – bold reds, yellows, orange and bright pinks – grab your attention and make the flowers appear closer than they are: it’s a trick
that designers use to make a big garden feel more intimate. Hot colours work best in sunny gardens and, on the whole, plants with bright red flowers, for example, tend to be sun-lovers. “Cool” colours from the blue, purple and pale pink spectrum are calming and restful. The way they blur into the background can be used to help a small space feel bigger. But that’s not to say you have to opt for one or the other. Many gardens have a sunny bed that could become a hot border and a shadier area for a cool border, giving you the best of both worlds. I did a very large garden from scratch for a client, with his house in between the two sides, using the same principles I have written about in the above paragraphs. The sunny side was all about the reds, yellows and oranges, and the other side of the garden was with the cooler shades of evening and night, both mixed with the dark greens of the leaves. It worked perfectly. So, try my tips out and have fun with them. A garden is a place of joy; relax after your hard work and take the time to wonder at Mother Nature giving us all these fabulous plants and flowers. Remember, a good garden flourishes with careful planning and forethought.

CASCADA COCINA & BAR
Creative Gastronomy in a Tranquil Marbella Setting Photos by Damian Rilo
The newly-opened Cascada Cocina & Bar, owned by the same group of professionals as the highly-regarded Castillo de Monda, has already become quite a hit with the locals. This charming restaurant and bar is situated in an idyllic setting, perched just up the hill behind Marbella’s Centro Comercial La Cañada next to a waterfall and surrounded by natural vegetation. What strikes you when you visit this venue is its utter tranquillity. Though only a minute from the hustle and bustle of Marbella’s largest shopping centre, if you choose to dine outside on Cascada’s large patio shaded by elegant shade sails, all you can hear is cascading water, birds tweeting and the faint sound of soothing music emanating from the restaurant inside. As you enter inside, there is a delightful bar area next to the open kitchen, which has a wood-burning fire and beautiful ivy green velvet chairs that invite guests to relax whilst enjoying perhaps a freshly-made cocktail or a gin from their extensive menu – including an array of botanicals.
Cocktails are a speciality of theirs, using only premium-brand spirits, and they invite guests in the afternoon for a two-for-one offer – which is an impressive deal when most of their cocktails cost only around €8 each! When you enter this airy and spacious restaurant, you cannot fail to be impressed by an interior design that could be described as casual-chic in its style. The sleek wooden dining chairs match perfectly with the stone-top tables encircled with chrome, adding a surreptitious touch of glamour. The menu is creative Mediterranean cuisine, putting a contemporary twist on the traditional at very reasonable prices. An interesting feature is that most of their dishes can be served as half portions or full portions, making it easy to try different dishes or share with your fellow guests. They have also just launched a new sharing platter, which is currently only available at lunchtime. All the dishes have been carefully thought-out, creatively put together and well-balanced, with fresh flavours cutting through any richness.

The kitchen is open from lunchtime through to the evening, so you can dine at any time of the day at Cascada (which might come in handy if you over-indulge on their two-for-one cocktail offer in the afternoon!). There is an impressive open wine cellar in the centre of the restaurant that also serves as a great design feature. Their wines are mainly from Spain, but they also offer international wines, and they plan to expand in that department. The service at Cascada is second-to-none. The young and vibrant general manager, David, is extremely accommodating and friendly, knowing many of his customers by their first names. When we chatted to the chefs, they seemed very passionate about their work and really cared about what the diners thought of their culinary creations. If you have not yet visited Cascada Cocina & Bar, it is certainly one to try, offering everything you would expect from a great dining experience. Cascada Cocina & Bar Urb. Montua 39, Marbella Tel. WINE NOTES
Your Wine Or Your Life? By Andrew J Linn
A new group of mainly young, media-savvy winemakers cannot be kept out of the public eye these days, and the launch of a new wine is often the subject of media hype, TV and radio interviews, and Bacchus knows what else. Why criticise? Because in all winemaking history, stretching back 7,000 years, the current era is the hardest in which to succeed. The wine harvest of 2017 was the worst in decades, ruined by late frosts, storms and vineyard fires. Ongoing climate change promises more upsets. Consumption is dropping like a stone in most wine-producing countries and, as if all this were not enough, the prophets of doom are forecasting that alcoholic drinks may soon go the way of cigarettes – if not banned altogether, at least becoming anti-social. From time to time every developed country publishes medical statistics proving that alcohol is bad for its citizens. In the same way that 50 years ago it was becoming clear that tobacco smoking was not the harmless pastime it once was and could kill you. The latest study, published in The Lancet (Britain’s most highly respected medical journal), concludes that drinking almost any alcohol is bad for you. Drinking at levels which were previously believed to be safe is apparently linked to lower life expectancy and adverse health outcomes. In a phrase, drink at your peril. The new study shows that every glass of wine or pint of beer over the dailyrecommended limit will cut half an hour from the expected lifespan of a 40-year-old. And that daily glass of red wine that keeps the heart healthy? Forget it. For the study, authored by Dr Angela Wood of the University of Cambridge, 600,000 drinkers around the world provided feedback. Apart from anything else, the results indicate that many official recommendations for alcohol consumption are too generous and indeed dangerous. Five standard glasses of wine or five pints of beer a week are the proposed upper safe limits – about 12.5 units in total. More than that raises the risk of stroke, fatal aneurysm, heart failure and death. “Above two units a day death rates steadily climb,” says David Spiegelhalter, Winton professor for the public understand-
ing of risk at Cambridge University. Put simply, the equivalent of drinking three glasses of wine a day reduces a 40-year-old’s life expectancy by two years, equivalent to a twentieth of his or her remaining life. This is an hour per day. So each unit above the guidelines is costing, on average, about 15 minutes of life, about the same as a cigarette. All really helpful, particularly the bit about “a twentieth of… remaining life’. This represents five per cent of someone’s total expected lifespan. If you are reading these lines you are probably someone who has spent many happy hours with friends enjoying far more glasses of wine than the “safe limit”. Indeed, there is nothing better to cheer up a boring social event or a routine lunch than a bottle of wine. But should we from this moment give up such pleasures of the flesh because it may cost us an undefined chunk from our lives? Rather like telling someone who practices horse riding, gymnastics, American football, mountaineering or skiing that they may have their lives shortened by injury, even early death. After all, five per cent of nothing – which is what anyone’s future life is worth at any given moment – is nothing. And how precise is life expectancy anyway since it is never calculated on an individual basis but rather as a national or sectorial statistic? We all have to die of something when our time comes, so what wine lover would not trade a few years of imaginary life for a preceding six or seven decades of real life? The authors of the new study admit to its shortcomings, mainly that it is based on self-reporting with no monitoring. Nor is locality or regional data provided, although the 19 countries whose inhabitants provided the data are classed as “high-income”, rather vague since healthcare can vary enormously even within such a categorisation. And despite the fact that this new study has been referred to as the deathknell of the drinks industry, the more you consider the figures, the more it becomes apparent that without regional and socio-economic data the findings leave a lot to the imagination.

KIDS CORNER
Summer - What To Do? By Elena Gatsenko
To make your child’s summer holidays unforgettable, you need not only free time to dedicate to your child, but also an action plan. It is especially important for working parents. And the most important thing here is not quantity but the quality of your social activities. You can do well without a two-week holiday at some resort. One weekend spent together and 15-30 minutes on weekdays is quite enough. But this time should be dedicated to your child only, and be ruled by his/her wishes. Introduce a system – think of something new to do every day or have a game continuation. And make sure this activity is interesting for you as well. What did you like doing as a child? Hairstyling on dolls? Launching ships? Setting off firecrackers? Now you have a good reason to tell them about your hobbies and do it again with your child. Or you can fulfil your own childhood dreams that didn’t come true – dancing in a puddle under the rain, pitching a tent on the beach or disassembling an alarm clock. Today children are surrounded by gadgets and it is very important to teach them to play and to communicate in a real, not virtual, world. Help them to “turn on” their fantasy. There will be a high demand for imagination and creativity, but today’s reality leaves no place for that. Do you remember how we made sand cakes, or a train made of upturned chairs or paper money made of leaves? Today children have everything – their favourite dollhouses, exact replicas of racing cars and virtual reality. It is great but it also dulls flexibility of one’s mind and vividness of one’s perception. Everything is available for them. But the good news is that you can train and develop fantasy just like a muscle. The same goes for speech. Learning pages of verses by heart is not necessary.
You can play store, with leaves instead of paper money. Let your child talk as if he/she is a sales assistant praising the quality of the goods, or let him/her be a fashion designer who will make an outfit for you using materials at hand. This is something to do on weekdays. And you’d better hide or turn off your cell phone. Your “Friends” page will wait. The best weekend is the one that has been planned or arranged. Follow the principle of the advent calendar or a mini-lottery with recreation activities to choose from. Your child can pick at random and read or guess by the picture, which recreation he/she has won – a pizza trip, building sandcastles or a tour. You don’t need expensive toys or haute cuisine to make your child absolutely happy. Sausages and marshmallows roasted on sticks over a real fire… Twometre-long crocodile made of sand by the water edge together with mom and dad… Lots of soap bubbles the entire family makes standing on a balcony… Or painting pebbles brought from the beach… You can make up themes connected with various countries for all summer Sundays – Japanese, Russian, American or Indian weekend, for example. All games, drawings, family dinners and crafts will have something to do with a particular country. And at the end of the day you can draw straws to decide what country you would “go” to next weekend. If after a hard working day you have no energy for anything elaborate, just read your favourite childhood fairytales aloud. And what shall one do the rest of the time? I suggest finding a summer camp. Luckily, in Spain they have day camps, and you can book a week, not necessarily an entire session. Furthermore, in Spain children are admitted to summer camps from age two. For instance, at our El Campanario we have already

developed a comprehensive development summer programme for children from two to seven years. It starts on 2 July and lasts till 31 August (MondayFriday, 10am-5pm). Your children will be able to attend a unique language camp where teachers are professionals – native speakers of English, Russian and Spanish. Then there are popular dancing lessons; lawn tennis and golf taught by one of the Europe’s best golf coaches; Draw as a Genius school; tasty and healthy culinary lessons; and a real vegetable garden where we grow vegetables for the most mouth-watering soups for lunch and baked puddings. Together with a
stage, playgrounds and orchard located in our green area, there will also be a two-storey playhouse. See you on summer holidays! I Laughed So Hard I Peed! By Rachel Garrod
This issue’s article is inspired by a conversation with a good friend of mine who has recently undergone radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer. He’s fine now by the way. But one thing he was most impressed with was the effectiveness of the pelvic floor exercises he was taught. The exercises, often referred to as Kegels after the gynaecologist who devised them, target the muscles of the pelvic floor that run like a hammock from the pubic bone to the coccyx. These muscles support the bladder and bowel in men and additionally the uterus in women. Weakness in the pelvic floor muscles can lead to urinary and faecal incontinence and difficulty holding back wind. So it’s really essential they are strong! They are frequently taught to women after childbirth or as a treatment for urinary incontinence. Most women will have heard of them even if they are a little unsure precisely how to perform them. But Kegels are also effective at treating male urinary incontinence and can even improve erectile dysfunction. One study of 55 men with erectile dysfunction found that 40 per cent of them regained normal function after three months of performing the exercises, 35
per cent reported improvements in function and only 25 per cent felt them to be of no benefit. Other outcomes were improvements in the strength of the anal sphincter and in quality of life. (Oh, and their partner’s quality of life improved too!) Research has also shown that men who did Kegels over an eight-week period had less than half as many weekly incontinence episodes as they had prior to starting the exercises. The first step in practising Kegels is to identify where the pelvic floor muscles are. The easiest way to do this is to try shutting off your pee mid-flow; it’s the pelvic floor muscles that enable you to do this. Try to target the muscles specifically; imagine them like an elevator rising up from the anus to the pubic bone. Avoid clenching your buttocks or holding your tummy in. Once you can do the exercises, practice three sets of 10 every day, and in eight to 12 weeks you should start to notice benefits. And the great thing about Kegels is you can do them anywhere, anytime, and no one will know! Physiotherapy lecturer and counsellor Rachel Garrod can be contacted at: Tel. A PILL TO PREVENT HEARING LOSS
It may soon be possible to take a pill to prevent hearing loss. Researchers have discovered that inhibiting an enzyme called cyclin-dependent kinase 2 (CDK2) may help protect against from noise-induced or drug-induced hearing loss. In animal studies, investigators have found that CDK2 inhibitors prevent the death of inner ear cells. According to the World Health Organisation, 360 million people worldwide suffer from hearing loss caused by congenital defects or other factors. These factors include infectious disease, use of certain medicines or exposure to excessive noise. Yet, there are currently no effective drugs that have been shown to prevent or treat hearing loss. A team of researchers at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in the United States screened more than 4,000 drugs for their ability to protect cochlear cells from the chemotherapy agent cisplatin. Cisplatin is used to treat a variety of cancers, but causes irreversible hearing loss in up to 70 per cent of patients. The researchers identified multiple compounds that protected cochlear cells from cisplatin, several of which are already approved to treat other conditions. Three of the 10 most effective compounds were inhibitors of an enzyme called CDK2. One of these CDK2 inhibitors, kenpaullone, was more effective than four other compounds that are currently in clinical trials for treating hearing loss. Injecting kenpaullone into the middle ear protected both mice and rats from cisplatin-induced hearing loss. In addition, kenpaullone protected the hearing of mice to noise as loud as 100 dB. “Given that 100-dB noise is in the range of noise insults commonly experienced by people in our society, kenpaullone could have significant clinical application in treating noise-induced hearing loss,” said study investigator Dr. Jian Zuo, who is with St. Jude’s Research Hospital in Memphis (Tennessee).
WALKING AWAY FROM DEMENTIA
Women who have high physical fitness levels at middle age may have a significantly lower risk of develop dementia decades later compared to women who are moderately fit, according to a new Swedish study published in the journal Neurology. The researchers found in their study that when the highly fit women suffered from dementia they developed the disease an average of 11 years later (age 90) than women who were moderately fit (age 79). “These findings are exciting because it’s possible that improving people’s cardiovascular fitness in middle age could delay or even prevent them from developing dementia,” said study author Helena Hörder, PhD, of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. For the study, 191 women (average age of 50) took a bicycle exercise test until they were exhausted, to measure their peak cardiovascular capacity. The average peak workload was measured at 103 watts. A total of 40 women met the criteria for a high fitness level, or 120 watts or higher. A total of 92 women were in the medium fitness category and 59 women were in the low fitness category. Over the next 44 years, the women were tested for dementia six times. During that time, 44 of the women developed dementia. However, only five per cent of the highly fit women developed dementia, compared to 25 per cent of moderately fit women and 32 per cent of the women with low fitness. The highly fit women were 88 per cent less likely to develop dementia than the moderately fit women.

Jaguar I-PACE
AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE REVOLUTION
It is, according to Jaguar, the definitive electric vehicle. Clean, smart and safe, the I-PACE delivers sustainable sports car performance, next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) technology and five-seat SUV practicality. “Where other companies talk about the future, we build it,” declared Jaguar Land Rover CEO Dr Ralf Speth on the eve of the Geneva Motor Show. “We have torn up the rule book to create the newest member of the PACE family, the all-electric Jaguar I-PACE. With zero tailpipe emissions, no CO2 and no particulates, it moves us dramatically closer to our vision of a clean, safe and sustainable future.” Added Jaguar I-PACE vehicle line director Ian Hoban, “We set out with a clean sheet approach to harness new battery electric technology with an architecture engineered from the outset to optimise performance, aerodynamics and interior space. The result is a true Jaguar and truly driver-focused EV. For I-PACE customers, fuel stations are a thing of the past – after overnight charging they’ll wake up every morning with a ‘full tank of fuel’.”
SPORTS CAR PERFORMANCE AND CUTTING-EDGE DESIGN With a state-of-the-art 90kWh Lithium-ion battery using 432 pouch cells, the I-PACE delivers a range of up to 480 kilometres (WLTP cycle). Owners will be able to achieve a 0-80 percent battery charge in 85 minutes using DC charging (50kW). The Jaguar I-PACE will be fully compatible with DC Rapid Chargers (100kW), which will enable a 0-80 percent charge in just 40 minutes. Home charging with an AC wall box (7kW) will achieve the same state of charge in just over ten hours – ideal for overnight charging. A suite of smart rangeoptimising technologies includes a battery pre-conditioning system: when plugged in the I-PACE will automatically raise (or lower) the temperature of its battery to maximise range ahead of driving away. Two Jaguar-designed electric motors – which feature driveshafts passing through the motors themselves for compactness – are placed at each axle, producing combined performance of 400PS and 696Nm, and all-wheel-drive, all-surface traction.
178 MAY & JUNE 2018
Open Road HL57.indd 178
26/4/18 14:04
The high torque density and high-energy efficiency characteristics of the motors deliver sports car performance, launching the I-PACE from a standing start to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. The bespoke EV aluminium architecture uses advanced riveting and bonding technology to deliver a light, stiff body structure. Together with the structural battery pack, it has a torsional rigidity of 36kNm/degree – the highest of any Jaguar. The battery is placed centrally between the two axles, and as low down as possible, with a seal between the housing and the underfloor. This location enables perfect 50:50 weight distribution and a low centre of gravity. The Jaguar I-PACE is designed and engineered to take full advantage of its smart electric powertrain and maximise the potential of the packaging benefits it brings. Its sleek, coupé-like silhouette is influenced by the Jaguar C-X75 supercar with a short, low bonnet, aeroenhanced roof design and curved rear screen. This cab-forward design contrasts with its squared-off rear, which helps reduce the drag co-efficient to just 0.29Cd. To optimise the balance between cooling and aerodynamics, Active Vanes in the grille open when cooling is required, but close when not needed to redirect air through the integral bonnet scoop, smoothing airflow. Inside, the layout optimises space for passengers while sophisticated materials – including the option of a premium textile Kvadrat interior. While a mid-sized SUV, I-PACE’s cab forward design and EV powertrain provide interior space comparable to large SUVs. In the rear, legroom is 890 millimetres while, with no transmission tunnel, there’s a useful 10.5-litre central storage compartment. In the rear, tablet and laptop stowage is found beneath the seats, while the rear luggage compartment offers a 656-litre capacity – and 1,453-litres with seats folded flat. I-PACE introduces the Touch Pro Duo infotainment system to Jaguar. Utilising an innovative combination of touchscreens, capacitive sensors and tactile physical controls, Touch Pro Duo is intuitive to use. A new EV navigation system assesses the topography of the route to destination and insights from previous journeys, including driving style, to calculate personalised range and charging status. The advanced system uses “Smart Settings” technology – driven by AI algorithms – to identify individual driver preferences, and then tailors the I-PACE’s driving and interior settings accordingly. EXHIBITIONS, CONCERTS AND LECTURES ON THE COSTA DEL SOL… AND FURTHER AFIELD BRITISH JOURNAL OF PHOTOGRAPHY – BREXIT SEPARATION
A portrait series by Laura Pannack asks the question, “What does Brexit mean for love?” Commissioned by British Journal of Photography and created with Affinity Photo for iPad, “Separation” comprises 13 portraits of London-based couples. The portraits are described as exploring “the angst and myriad emotions experienced by London-based couples who, as a result of Brexit, have been forced to contemplate separation. Brexit has long garnered column inches for its political implications, but what does it mean for love?” The couples are all of different nationalities: one half of each is British and the other half from elsewhere in Europe: Italian, Finnish, Bulgarian, Span-
ish, Polish, Swedish, French and German. At least one half of each of the couples featured in “Separation” works in London’s creative sector – “a diverse and thriving industry that has long been a draw for Europeans moving to the capital” – and the job titles of the couples include film programmer, arts tutor, sound artist, graphic designer, animation designer and professional drummer. Each portrait is accompanied by candid reflections from each couple detailing how Brexit has personally affected their relationship. www.bjp-online.com/tag/laura-pannack-brexit

Dynamics of the Void
MARBELLA GALLERY COLLABORATION BETWEEN MATIAS DI CARLO AND WADSTRÖM TÖNNHEIM Photos by Johnny Gates
Wadström Tönnheim has opened its first gallery space outside Sweden in Marbella. In April, the acclaimed Swedish gallery launched an ambitious opening programme in Spain with emerging Argentinian artist Matias Di Carlo, exhibiting his powerful sculptures with the title “Dynamics of the Void”. “For me and my wife Lisa, who also is my gallery partner,” says Mattias Tönnheim, owner and director of Wadström Tönnheim Gallery, “this is a dream come true considering the promising conditions with our new grand space here in Polígono Nueva Campana, which in my opinion is the ultimate location for our gallery in Marbella. We also strongly believe that there is a newborn interest for contemporary art of quality in the region, and it is with great joy and honour that we present our new collaboration and the fantastic exhibition ‘Dynamics of the Void’ by Matias Di Carlo, who produced several formidable pieces for our premiere opening.” Very early in his life, Matias Di Carlo felt a close connection with nature and its elements, something which became even more evident during his trips to the mountains in the Patagonian Andes. Back at home in Buenos Aires, he was taught to master fire and an array of metals, and soon he transformed this knowledge into a sculptural language of his own. According to the gallery partners, “Matias’s new exhibition invites us to feel and experience the sounds released by the interaction of the density of matter and void space – the tension created between them reveals a virtuous vibration. The effect of light and shadow irradiates poetry. As though a magnet, his rotund pieces attract the spectator to dive into them to discover the underlying layers and dimensions which surface one after another.” Di Carlo was born in Argentina in 1978, and his Italian roots are imprinted with a long history of artistic ironsmithing. He is the fourth generation to continue creating with metal and fire, taking it to the level of a sculptural language of his own. Wadström Tönnheim Gallery is focused on contemporary art, primarily by Scandinavian artists. The mission of the gallery has been “to examine the idea of the painterly, be it also through related media such as photography, sculpture, installations, video and drawing, in order to understand and to promote the direction of painting and its relevance to contemporary visual culture”. The galleries in Malmö and Marbella are owned and operated by Lisa Wadström and Mattias Tönnheim: www.wadstromtonnheim.se. The “Dynamics of the Void” exhibition will remain on show until 9 June. Add a good dash of classic English country house charm to individual creative flair and the result is just the ambience architect-interior designer Jaime Parladé was seeking when he transformed his home above San Pedro de Alcántara in the Alcuzcuz hills into a boutique hotel. The house has been home for the Parladé family since it was built in 1860, and there are plenty of wonderful mementos dotted around the property mixed with fabulous French antiques and artefacts. The family history dates to a great-great-grandfather who was one of the first industrialists in this part of the world, operating an ironworks in Elvira which was fuelled from forests in El Madroñal and the surrounding areas. In the 1980s Francisco and Jaime sold off large plots in El Madroñal, creating what today is popular as a prime real estate area. The family’s “baby”, however, was always La Heredia, with most streets named after the family, designed by Jaime and built by Francisco. Sadly, Jaime passed away in 2014, leaving an estate which is now a chic, seductively grand 10-bedroom hotel. The bedrooms all contain a fascinating medley of images, objects and fine old carpets. The well-established gardens are laid out in distinctive areas highlighted by beautiful shrubbery and flowers, a swimming pool surrounded by vegetation, and terraces filled with wisteria and trumpet vines that weave their way through pergolas to create shady havens for those wanting to admire stunning views over the northern African coastline just beyond Gibraltar. The hotel can be rented out in its entirety or as individual rooms. It has a B&B set up where people take their breakfast in the kitchen/diner or, during pleasant weather, outside on the patio or in the gardens. Visitors are also welcome to relax in the cosy lounge area. Ctra. De Ronda, Km. 42, Benahavís Tel. (+34) 952 780 332 / 678 996 535 info@alcuzcuz.es / www.alcuzcuz.es HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

MARBELLA DESIGN
SHOWCASE OF DIVERSE TRENDS AND NICHE MARKETS Organisers of the Marbella Design fair are already planning for next year’s event after a “hugely successful” inaugural edition in April. Described as “the first international design fair organised in Spain”, the event ran over five days at the Palacio de Ferias, Congresos y Exposiciones (conference hall) in Marbella, attracting both industry professionals and lovers of latest design trends. Companies from Marbella – including Home & Lifestyle Magazine as a media sponsor – were well represented, as well as other businesses from around Spain and elsewhere in Europe. According to the fair’s director, Alejandro Zaia, “As many as 3,000 people visited Marbella Design, which reaffirms our belief that a fair of this kind was both necessary and in great demand by both professionals and members of the public interested in design. Among those attending were such key industry personalities as Deyan Sudjic, director of the Design Museum in London, Frank Stephenson, considered one of the best car designers in the world, and designer Teresa Sapey.” The fair offered a diverse selection of exhibitions covering different aspects of design and provided a significant meeting point for the exchange of ideas and projects. In the section dedicated to interior design, one of the main exhibitors was Aalto Exclusive Design, a renowned international interior design and architecture studio founded by designer Jose A. Flores, who invited 200 professional and private guests to an after-work party at their Marbella showroom; while another major designer participating in the fair was Pedro Peña, who also hosted a cocktail party during the fair. The first edition of Marbella Design was devised as a “niche fair” featuring a meticulously selected array of distinctive design facets that provided visitors with an all-encompassing vision of design. The exhibitors included galleries dedicated to design such as Vertigo; interior design and furniture firms such as Loani Home Interior Design, Volubilis and Colonial Club; major international fashion firms with home lines like Trussardi, Fendi Casa and Bentley Home; art galleries T20 Projects, José de la Mano, Leyendecker, Wadström Tönnheim and Lucía Mendoza; two special projects by invited artists PiaMYrvoLD and Dionisio González; jewellery design brand Gaskell Jewelry; Solantu, an exclusive brand of sustainable crocodile skin bags; luxury designed cars by Mario Guarnieri; and the tourist project El Museo, apartments with art curated by Fernando Francés. Another highlight was the VIP Lounge created by Blanca Pera Interior Design Studio, Paula Vincenti, and Nina Nolte. La Catarina CraftBeer and Tomato FreshFood took care of the catering, and Maison Select and Pinturas Andalucía collaborated on the staging. Meanwhile. DesignforLife brought together the aforementioned Deyan Sudjic, Teresa Sapey and Frank Stephenson, as well as publicist Borja Borrero, The Wall Street Journal journalist Sarah Miller, graphic designer Oscar Mariné and artist Dionisio González, with the event coordinated by Anatxu Zabalbeascoa, an El País newspaper journalist specialising in architecture and design.

Connect Premium explain here the ins-and-outs of their listing service... “Premium listing is a unique service which allows property owners to quickly and effectively sell their properties. “Connect act as the property owner’s sole point of contact and will carry out all the necessary preparation prior to the property being listed. This will include a professional valuation and an inventory of all the required documentation. We then have a lawyer review the documentation to make sure everything is on order to ensure that there will be no potential hold-ups at the point of sale. We also assist the homeowner in obtaining the important energy certificate. We then carry out staging; staging is a technique designed to improve a property’s appeal by transforming it into a welcoming, attractive product and widening the range of potential buyers. Professional photographs and a video are commissioned and we draw a floor plan. “We then place the property with the agent or agents that are the most appropriate for your particular property – this is a choice that is often difficult for the property owner to make. Placing a property with multiple agents is not advisable; on the other hand, the most common reason for a property not being sold is that it is with a perfectly good agent but the wrong agency for that particular property. Our expertise will not allow that to happen. “At the time of viewings, a director of Connect is always personally present. We open up the property before the potential client and agent arrive, open windows for fresh air, turn on the lights and put everything in order for a perfect presentation. We take full responsibility for the property, leaving it locked up and fully secured after the viewing. This eliminates the necessity of having various sets of keys in circulation, or for the property owner being present at viewing, which can be inconvenient. “Our objective is quite simple: to achieve the quickest and most effective route for the property owner to sell their property and to achieve the best price; we consider much of the discounting that happens on the point of sale to be unnecessary and avoidable, if the property is at all times presented at its best, to the right high-quality buyers.” Connect Premium’s expert team speak Dutch, English, German and Spanish. EXPERT ADVICE
IBI and Cadastral Values in Spain Article supplied by Welex Lawyers & Accountants
Closely related to the real estate tax, cadastral values are administrative values that have been determined for each property located in the Spanish territory.
What is the Cadastral Value Used For? The cadastral value is extremely important for many types of taxes such as the Real Estate Tax (IBI).
Cadastral values are determined based on the following variables: 1. The location of the real estate property, the urban qualification. 2. The taxes levied on the construction, the taxes for the particular year that the building was constructed, among others. 3. The value o f the land and the construction. Through a ministerial order, the reference coefficient was established at 0.5 of the market price since the entry into force of the decision. It was therefore determined that the cadastral value could not, in any case, exceed the market price of the real estate. The Real Estate Cadastral Law foresees that the fees should be updated by means of the law of the general budgets of the state, and in its Article 1 it includes the coefficients to update cadastral values for the year 2018.
What is the IBI Exactly? Its full name is the Real Estate Tax (Impuesto sobre Bienes Inmuebles). It is not a tax that is assigned to all people, but is assigned to the owners of real estate, apartments, commercial premises, villas, plots of land, etc. The owners of the real estate have to pay this local tax, and the taxes are used to finance the town councils.
The values to update the coefficients are determined for 2018 according to the following table: Year of Entrance of the Values 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989 y 1990 1994 1995 1996 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 2001, 2002, 2003 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 2011 2012
Updating Coefficient 1.08 1.07 1,06 1.05 1.04 1.03 0.96 0.95 0.91
How is the Real Estate Tax Calculated? Calculation of the IBI is relatively complex. The amount is calculated based on the aforementioned cadastral value and a percentage of that cadastral value. Each municipality can incorporate bonuses according to the type of real estate or according to the criteria of the family that owns the property, such as large families, disabled people and other categories. Will the IBI Increase or Decrease Next Year? The Real Estate Tax will most likely decrease if your property in Spain has a cadastral value that was assigned in the year 2005 onwards. The IBI of your property, however, will increase if the cadastral value was assigned prior to 2005. Who Pays the IBI? The answer to this question is regulated by local lax law. The owner of the property on 1 January of the year in which the sale takes place is the one who has the obligation to pay the IBI for the full year. However, the Supreme Court stated in a court ruling in 2016 that, if there is no agreement to the contrary, the seller who paid the IBI of that year may require the buyer to pay a portion of the IBI based on the date of delivery of the property.
