Editorial Summer is customarily a time when our focus is more on chilling out with family and friends than planning a major upgrade of the home or refining the décor. For us at Home & Lifestyle Magazine, that is certainly the case: we are eagerly looking forward to our next luncheon barbecue around the pool… or al fresco evening soirée on the terrace. Or, even better, both! At the same time, however, we are aware that as soon as the summer months pass attention once again turns to home refurbishments in preparation for autumn and winter. So, with that in mind, this bumper issue is full of new trends, innovations and ideas from leading local professionals and top home decoration brands, to happily ponder over in July and August as you open another bottle of Ribera del Duero and relax in the welcoming embrace of a comfy sun-lounger or favourite armchair. In the meantime, as we were putting the finishing touches to this issue, our attention was drawn to Singapore, specifically to ConnecTechAsia and summit speaker Franklin Tang’s insight into the future of smart homes. The CEO of Habitap, he recalled that, while working for Philip Tang & Sons, the company partnered with a global tech giant to build a prototype of a smart home. “In the process of building that prototype, we realised that despite the abundance of Internet-Of-Things (IoT) or smart home products globally they were either poorly integrated or not integrated at all. This resulted in us having multiple apps for different products, and we had the huge task of integrating all of them. We realised then that there was a gap that could be filled, and having an integrated solution to consolidate all these apps and functions would make things very convenient for homeowners.” Tang said he believed the future of smart homes would be software-driven with user-friendly interfaces and people being able to opt for the interface they are most comfortable with. “There will also be more smart devices, more seamless integration and better performance, in the form of voice and facial recognition. We are already seeing that shift taking place. Today, smart home features have become a must in almost every new residential development, with the provision of smart locks and basic controls. In fact, we see developers increasing their basic provision.” As always, the Costa del Sol is well advanced in this respect, and not only with new developments. More and more people are incorporating domótica (home automation) systems into their existing homes, providing added convenience and comfort when hosting a summer party or simply enjoying a languid afternoon in the shade of the garden - and everything under control with just the simple tap of a button.

The fabulous
OUTDOORS Outdoor living is a way of life on the southern coast of Spain, where outdoor furniture plays an extremely important role. Melding the indoors with outside spaces is an increasingly popular trend, as homeowners expect the same amount of comfort in both these areas of their homes. With manufacturing technology improving all the time, furniture can withstand all weather types, be easily moved around, adapt to fit the exact space and, of course, look stylish all at the same time! The Elements collection by Manutti was created by designer Gerd Couckhuyt and was awarded a Red Dot Award in 2014. This contemporary range has volumous cushions offering ultimate luxury with LED lighting optional. Available from Acoola in Pol. Ind. San Pedro de Alcántara (www.acoola.eu), Siesta Interior Design in C. Plaza in Nueva Andalucía (www.siestainteriordesign.com) and UDesign in Pol. Ind. San Pedro de Alcántara (www.udesign.es).

“I fancied something really traditional, something a bit modernist, relaxed in the way we treated the fibre…” Patricia Urquiola.
The Vimini collection, which comprises a dining armchair, sofas and side tables, was designed by Patricia Urquiola for Kettal. It was named because Vimini means “wicker” in Italian and it sounds like Bimini, which is an island that Patricia Urquiola is fond of. The design mixes traditional braiding with a modern look. Kitchens
Kitchen Cool Everyone has their own idea of the perfect kitchen, but at the end of the day a cluttered kitchen with saucepans hanging from the ceiling and crockery sitting on open shelves for an age can all contribute to an unhygienic kitchen unless you are an extremely busy cook, that is. The trend these days is for clever storage, sleek tops and walls (without ridges and grouting) and coordinated cabinets so that the overall look of your kitchen is organised, at the height of cleanliness and easy on the eye. Warmcoloured metals have been making a comeback in a big way and, combined with stone or wood, they can make a kitchen look truly sensational.

VELVET VILLAS
LUXURY LIVING EXPERIENCE ON THE NEW GOLDEN MILE
In many ways Cancelada is a classic microcosm of the Costa del Sol’s chic and cosmopolitan luxury residential lifestyle. Located in the heart of the “New Golden Mile” in Estepona municipality, the burgeoning town hub has become a focal point for residents in the surrounding urbanisations and mini-estates, providing key services, amenities and infrastructure, as well as convenient proximity to the beach, golf clubs, other top leisure facilities, Marbella’s renowned nightlife and international airports in Málaga and Gibraltar. One of the finest developments currently available for sale in this area, between Cancelada and Flamingos Golf and Resort, is Otero Group’s Velvet residential complex. Comprising 12 independent villas featuring a stunning contemporary design, Velvet is surrounded by other high-end villa developments that are also earmarked for completion over the next three years - thus further enhancing the area’s appeal for those want to combine a tranquil lifestyle with the full range of basic services. The Cancelada urban nucleus is a comfortable 15-minute walk away (on flat terrain) and already offers schools, a multi-sports complex, banks, restaurant-bars, a pharmacy, a town hall office, a post office and a children’s park. It is only eight minutes by car to Puerto Banús, and the Villa Padierna Club del Mar, with its sports amenities, beach club, easy access and parking, and attractive beach, is even closer - just five minutes away. The exclusive Velvet villas offer maximum accommodation with the opportunity of customising each home to personal tastes and requirements. Buyers can choose from three different types and sizes, with four bedrooms. All villas are south orientated, with outstanding sea views, and the independent plots range from 965 to 1,095 square metres - the perfect size for an exceptional luxury villa. Velvet has been designed using latest techniques for ecological and low-
maintenance building, as well as sophisticated details and luxury finishing. The villas are highlighted by spacious double-height entrances (ideal for welcoming your friends and family), large open-plan living areas, cosy spaces for relaxing, and excellent access to magnificent terraces, an infinity pool and a dual-level garden - plus a carport for two cars. All the bathrooms are en suite and feature lavish finishes and the highest quality features, while the fully fitted kitchens (again, equipped to the highest standards) come with a separate laundry area and can be set up in an open, closed or semi-closed style. Options include a roof terrace with barbecue and jacuzzi (and the best views in town!) and a basement with spa, gym, entertainment area, cellar and storage. During their impressive history building family homes, more than 60 years, Otero Group have become renowned for transforming people’s residential dreams into reality. Rubén Otero, a third-generation member of the family company, established the business in Marbella eight years ago after it had originally been set up in northern Spain. Over the years, they have projected and/or built more than 3.000 houses, offering a team of international experts who cover design, architecture, construction, marketing and law with a broad spectrum of talents and international experience. Currently, they are involved in the development of more than 100 different projects on the Costa del Sol, looking after a wide range of clients from throughout the world. “Above all else,” notes Rubén Otero, “our customers value having a single point of contact and liability with Otero Group, covering the entire constructive chain – from architecture, building and refurbishment to sales and marketing.” Blvd. Principe Alfonso Hohenlohe, Urb. ENTERTAIN IN
SUSTAINABLE STYLE THIS SUMMER
This spacious and highly versatile outdoor living area allows itself to be used for anything from quietly reading a book to endless hours of entertainment in style.
Natural elements of thatch, timber and travertine complement each other stunningly, reverberating nature in every corner.
All the comfort and style of the indoors can be easily brought outdoors to create an extension of your home.
The summer months are upon us and, as is the custom in Spain, this means endless days and glorious nights spent in the outdoors, enjoying the beautiful Mediterranean climate to its fullest. For many this would mean daily trips to the beach, local plaza or al fresco restaurant, but what could be more convenient than having somewhere to enjoy all the benefits of the season right at your doorstep? A custom-designed and built outdoor living space is an excellent way to enjoy the outdoors in the comfort of the indoors. Not only does it add immense value to your property but it also allows you to make the most of the season in the privacy of your own home. While it’s important to create an outdoor space that suits your needs and requirements, it is equally important to also keep in mind the impact that such a structure will have on the environment. Living sustainably and respecting the environment is a big step towards ensuring the future of our planet. The inevitable question that comes to mind is: how do you create a stylish space for entertainment and relaxation, with a conscious desire to maintain some degree of sustainability? The answer to this is two-fold: by pairing sustainable materials that have been responsibly sourced and managed with a stunning customised design. When thinking about renewable, sustainable building materials, two natural resources immediately come to mind - timber and thatch. The distinct beauty, ambience and versatility of a thatch and/or timber structure makes it the perfect option for creating outdoor living spaces in a sustainable manner. Having established themselves as experts in the field of creating exclusive living spaces over the past two decades, Cape Reed International’s sustainable thatched structures limit their overall impact on the environment while providing grandeur, comfort, functionality and durability for its inhabitants. A well-designed, decorated and equipped outdoor living space will quickly become the most popular area of your home. Whether you want to go big or keep it small and simple, an outdoor space that oozes style and comfort is the ultimate way to enjoy the wonderful sounds, sights and delights of the surrounding landscape while spending quality time with friends and family. The wonderful truth about sustainability is that you can take the environment into consideration while still leading a stylish life of luxury. Being eco-friendly does not mean having to compromise what you enjoy in life. Cape Reed’s experts help you treat yourself to a lifetime of exclusive living… naturally. Tel. LA RESERVA DE SOTOGRANDE
PRISTINE LUXURY RESORT LIVING
WITH AN INLAND BEACH Photos by: Johnny Gates
Home & Lifestyle Magazine was invited by charismatic La Reserva de Sotogrande CEO Marc Topiol – a highly-driven businessman with ground-breaking ideas - to take a look around this extraordinary project that is putting Sotogrande further on the map in a jaw-dropping way. The Costa del Sol is home to many exceptional residential estates, so it is not always easy to stand out. For one new development, however, that was precisely the main objective - and they are meeting the challenge in stunning style. La Reserva de Sotogrande comprises 600 hectares of virgin land situated six kilometres inland from the coast, and is approximately the same size as La Zagaleta (another ultra-exclusive urbanisation in the hills above Marbella). It has been relatively untouched during the 55 years since it was bought. The developers of the project favour quality over quantity, and to that end have focused on low-density construction in a natural, wildlife-friendly setting. As we toured around this vast resort, we sensed an air of excitement for what is going to come, with construction companies working fervently to meet their deadlines and staff busily making preparations for the imminent inauguration. The project offers an alternative lifestyle on rolling land with scrupulously preserved natural surroundings, and is aimed at attracting families and likeminded people who want to get to know their neighbours and have a deep sense of community living. It offers rigid security and a feeling of absolute safety, effectively living in your own private luxury neighbourhood. In short, La Reserva de Sotogrande is an innovative concept for luxury resort living, providing everything discerning people could require, highlighted by the finest services and amenities and superb sporting and leisure activities – all inside a private gated community. These state-of-the-art amenities include golf, children’s entertainment, kayaks, water bikes, stand-up paddle, tennis, equestrianism, classes and much more to suit all tastes and ages. Before embarking on our tour, we enjoyed a sumptuous lunch of contemporary Andalucian cuisine with Marc in their stylish L’Olive restaurant, where he told us more about the project. He commented, “Basically, we are an extension of all that Marbella brings to those who reside and visit here. We wanted La Reserva de Sotogrande to offer an all-round superlative lifestyle for everyone of all ages, which is why we have brought so many different elements into the project. As we understand that an integral part of living on the Costa del Sol is beach life, we have decided to bring the beach to us! In just a few weeks we will be launching Spain’s very first and only luxury inland beach club complete with a sand-bottomed pool and leisure activities for all the family – it’s a very exciting part of the project.” Set out to be a “steward of the environment”, the beach complex includes a sophisticated filtration system, fresh water pool and sand from Cádiz, with a 220-seat beach club facility. Marc states, “The idea is that all elements of La
Reserva de Sotogrande become an extension of the residents’ gardens allowing them to eat together as well as make new friends and wonderful memories – all part of this spirit of community of La Reserva de Sotogrande – with a sense of identity, place and authenticity. Currently there are plans for 15 sub-communities within the Reserva de Sotogrande estate.” EL MIRADOR El Mirador is a gated community of six exquisite modern villas, each created to best exploit their unrivalled views across the estate, the golf course and down to the Mediterranean Sea. Designed by leading Andalucian architect Manuel Ruiz of ARK architects, each expansive, pavilion-style property features clean, contemporary lines and an abundance of natural light, with floor-toceiling windows, tiered terraces, infinity pools and extensive outdoor living space – all with an eye to those sweeping sea views. THE SEVEN This community comprises seven capacious, one-of-a-kind mansions created by seven of the world’s leading architects, each hidden in its own hectare of luxuriant parkland inspired by the rolling, rural landscape of rural Provence and crafted by world-renowned landscape architect Jean Mus. THE COLLECTION The Collection is a community of individually designed family villas, expanding from four bedrooms to vast structures that allow for staff accommodation, spas and indoor pools. Whether 600 or 900 square metres, each villa centres around a sun terrace, pool and landscaped garden designed especially for the Andalucian climate, while also ensuring the interior comforts that make La Reserva Club a year-round retreat. LOS CORTIJOS A collection of individually designed properties of the highest specifications in a secure, village-like community close to the international school and beach complex, Los Cortijos’ finca-style homes are especially suited to families. Marrying traditional Andalucian architecture with cutting-edge technology and impeccable finishing, the properties benefit from 24-hour security, a communal swimming pool and verdant, landscaped space. SMALL GARDENS Love them or loathe them? By Alia Babapulle
Any small garden has to be worked hard to look good all year, and so does the gardener have to work hard. This could be the only private outside area to relax in and, with the current trend in modern design, gardens are increasingly seen through large glass doors or picture windows. It is rare for a garden in a town not to be over-viewed by other properties, which raises issues of how to create some privacy. Here, landscaping should be constructed from materials that can take shade, although stone or wood naturally turn green with algae in areas of low light and can look quite pretty. With a careful selection, maintenance of the scheme can be minimised. Many trees and shrubs have invasive roots that can make even the best-laid paving uneven, so one should define the extent of hard landscaping in the garden to work with the surrounding planting. Some shrubs with juicy fruit can, and do, permanently stain natural stone. Laurel in particular with its blue-black fruit causes violent purple results on paving. Dense shrub planting under something like this would be a good idea and will look attractive. Small town gardens often have very limited access for importing materials and plants. Don’t plan a
lawn in a small garden: unless you have space outside for the mower, it is not a good idea. This also applies to materials arriving to actually build the garden. My one important thing, which is the first I think of, is where is light and where is shade. I look at the garden at different hours of the day and get a far better idea of what goes where and why. Then I start to plan it. You should do the same. Another must is good soil and drainage. If this doesn’t work, you will have problems. Prepare carefully and then plant, not the other way round. Although it sounds very much doom and gloom for small gardens, actually they are great fun to do and the most pleasing to see growing and still looking good after years of use. Again, the success is in the planning. Just take time, and define areas for privacy, spaces for hard and soft landscaping, integral storage and a space for outside cooking if you have enough room. Think hard about the planting - what you want to achieve - and it all should come together as a well-designed whole and give years of pleasure as it grows and matures. If you build a good rapport with a reputable garden centre, so much the better. Have fun!

Creative Summer Ideas DORADA A LA BARBECUE (4 people) 4 whole fresh dorada 2 limes in slices Maldon flaked salt whole pink peppers fresh thyme, rosemary or dill to your taste Now it’s time to stop with all that boring frozen fish you can buy in the supermarket. Think of how many delicious fresh fish are caught in the waters where we live. Please, go down to the local fish market and see the amazing selection of fresh fish they offer. I’m a big fan of dorada, the fish we are cooking here today. In fact, I was already a huge fan of it when I was a child. I was convinced that it was a real pirate fish, the coolest fish in the whole universe. When you’re out shopping, go for the fish with the clearest eyes and the finest and brightest shine in the skin. Then you are sure it’s the freshest fish on the market. Get the shop to rinse the fish and remove all fins and the stomach. When you come home, fill it with lime or lemon slices as well as your favourite fresh herb or spice, lots of flaked salt and some whole pink pepper. I prefer to grill the fish on both sides, directly on the grill for approx. 12 to 15 minutes in total. If you have a special fish-holder for the grill, that is preferable, so the skin doesn’t burn onto your grill and it keeps the fish together. If you don’t have a grill, then wrap the fish in baking paper in an ovenproof dish with a bit of white wine and bake in the oven for approximately 20 minutes at 200 degrees - then you are also sure of a juicy delicious result. To accompany the fish you can grill green asparagus, red onion and red snack peppers. It doesn’t get easier to cook than that, and it’s actually quite healthy.
With the summer season now on us, home cooks will be thinking about some creative new ideas to wow their guests. Or perhaps there is a special anniversary, family reunion or business lunch coming up and requiring a deft and delectable culinary touch in the kitchen. Whatever the occasion or catering requirements, these menu suggestions from Chili Gourmet by Helle Barlebo are an excellent starting point.

SANGRIA A LA CHILI GOURMET 1 litre red wine 125 grams cane sugar 3 freshly squeezed oranges 1 freshly squeezed lemon about ¼ dl. Cointreau or Anis Dulce about 1 dl. alcohol from your bar cabinet 2 dl. Fanta Lemon This Spanish summer drink is extremely flexible and many Spanish families will have their own recipe for a delicious sangria. It is okay to use some of the bottles from your bar cabinet to give it an extra touch. We prefer vodka, rum or brandy, but whisky is a no, as the taste is too dominating. Mix all the ingredients except Fanta, and leave the mixture until the sugar is completely dissolved. The trick behind this wonderful drink is to get the perfect balance between sweet and fresh, so you don’t realise how much alcohol it actually contains. Cut plenty of fresh fruit into slices or cubes, such as apple, pear, peach, orange, lemon, lime, strawberry, grapes without seeds, tangerine, blueberries or whichever fresh fruit you have in the house. Put the fruits in a few large glass jars with lots of ice cubes, pour the sangria in and the Fanta at the end. Use a wooden spoon to stir the drink around. Also use the wooden spoon when pouring the drink to avoid splashing. Want an extra kick! You can substitute red wine with either white wine or cava and add a whole dried anise and top with a little fresh mint to obtain a white sangria. My explanation for guests is always that it “tastes like lemonade but kicks like a horse”.

Alberts has been established in the quaint little port of Cabopino for over 15 years and its prime position serves as a benchmark in the area. Overlooking the harbour, Alberts offers a large terrace to soak up the impressive views of the marina, as well as a fun and contemporary interior design within the restaurant itself. Home & Lifestyle Magazine was invited to check out their new menu‌ The menu at Alberts is extensive with influences taken from all over the world, ranging from crispy baby ribs with Thai dipping sauce, prawns pilpil with pesto aioli toast, chicken satay with coconut and peanut dip, traditional fish and chips, Caribbean jerk chicken curry, freshly-made pizzas and crunchy salads to good-quality steaks - with vegetarian and gluten-free options also available. Alberts is a restaurant that truly caters for everyone, offering breakfast from 9.30am until 1pm and then lunch running into dinner until late. Alberts are famous for their traditional English Sunday lunch, which will be served right through the summer months from 12.30pm until 6pm, but if a Sunday roast is not your preference they offer an alternative lunch menu. They are children-friendly and have large TV screens so major sports events can be viewed for sporting enthusiasts. If you are not interested in watching sport, there is always people-watching from the terrace, with the marina
beyond. Background music is played to add an upbeat ambience, and if you like live music you might be treated to some low-key live performances at Sunday lunchtimes. All dishes are well presented and offer ample portions. The service is excellent, with little waiting from the time of ordering to the plates arriving. During our visit, the waiters were very attentive, chatty and clearly passionate about the menu. Alberts is not just a restaurant but you are welcome to visit for a drink from the bar also. There is a delightful cocktail bar by the terrace where they offer a wide range of options including non-alcoholic cocktails. Apart from the usual cocktails found on most menus, dare to try some of their more creative concoctions and you won’t leave disappointed. For reservations Tel. One of the Coast’s most well-known Indian chefs, and hailed for his contemporary cooking style, Raja has opened his latest restaurant on Marbella’s Golden Mile - called Mum Indian. It is sometimes difficult to differentiate between the many Indian restaurants in the Marbella area, but Mum certainly offers something extra special. With Raja’s wealth of experience and passion for Indian cuisine, as soon as he opened his doors he was greeted by an extremely appreciative local audience and he has been busy for lunch and dinner from the very start. Whether your taste veers towards spicy dishes or you prefer milder flavours, Mum’s menu caters for everyone - including Halal options. Mum’s dishes are all creatively put together with plenty of colour and finesse, fresh ingredients and an authentic depth of flavour. The decoration is modern, and the restaurant generally has an airy feel with a bar at the far end. There is not only indoor dining, but you can also dine on their enclosed terrace at the front of the restaurant looking out to the bustling streets of Marbella, without being subjected to the noise and car fumes outside. We were treated to their potato Chaat, taken from North India and Paskistan’s street food culture, served with yoghurt and tamarind sauce. Another vegetarian dish we tried was their Chana Masala, curried chickpeas with spinach
and a cherry tomato on top accompanied by fresh pomegranate seeds. Raja was then keen for us to try the Hyderabadi chicken tikka, boneless chicken marinated in fresh green herbs and chopped cashew nuts and cooked tandoori style. He is famous for his chicken Pasanda and he did not let us down with succulent rolls of chicken stuffed with spinach in a rich and delicious creamy sauce finished with saffron. Open from 1pm until midnight every day of the week, with a menu of the day available from 1pm until 5pm including a starter, main course and dessert. Home delivery and takeaway available. PETIT SEA GRILL AT PUENTE ROMANO
Exquisite Tapas & Wine by the Glass
Home & Lifestyle Magazine was invited by Puente Romano in Marbella to try out their new Petit Sea Grill restaurant, situated in the luxury hotel resort’s already well established and popular Sea Grill beachside restaurant. Executive Chef Thomas Stork and his team have come up with a stunning menu combining healthy local Andalucian tapas and wines by the glass at very reasonable prices. As you would expect, all the tapa dishes are homemade, balancing innovative cooking with traditional flavours. Local dishes include aloe vera ceviche; salmorejo made from local organic tomatoes, mixed with bread, oil and garlic; and mojama, a traditional Spanish delicacy of filleted salt-cured tuna from Cádiz. There is also a fresh sushi and sashimi section on the menu, offering the likes of abalone, snow crab and white prawns from Huelva. An interesting concept that Thomas is offering guests is a selection of exclusive international and local wines by the glass, thanks to the resort’s Coravin system which enables wine bottles to be poured without removing the cork. Guests can enjoy a wide selection of wines, selected by sommelier Carlos García Ceballos, to complement each tapa dish on the menu. The wines include Pétrus, Pingus and Chablis Grand Cru, as well as Mauro Godello, of which only 5,000 bottles are produced each year. The Petit Sea Grill is located just above the Sea Grill with views over the beautiful surroundings, palm trees and glistening Mediterranean Sea beyond. It offers an airy and relaxed dining experience with a contemporary and stylish décor, all under wooden slatted roofing that allows the natural sunlight to filter through. Petit Sea Grill is open every day from midday until midnight. Puente Romano is situated on Marbella’s Golden Mile. Tel. (+34) 952 820 900 / www.puenteromano.com

SUPERLATIVE PREPARATION FOR TOP HOSPITALITY SPECIALISTS OF THE FUTURE
LES ROCHES MARBELLA Home & Lifestyle Magazine was invited to one of the world’s leading hospitality colleges, situated in the heart of Marbella. This Swiss hotel management school attracts over 800 talented young adults from all over the globe, teaching them how to excel in the world of hospitality, business and tourism. We were intrigued to find out more about this world-famous facility… Les Roches has campuses in many locations around the world. As the curriculum is exactly the same across all the campuses, a pupil could transfer to another campus seamlessly with no disruption to their studies. Some classes are even televised live and broadcast to other campuses, thus creating an an impressive international network. Students are taught all elements of hospitality, ranging from cooking and menu planning, cleaning, logistics, reception work and restaurant service to learning business systems… and much more. They are required to deal with real life problem-solving and encouraged to take the initiative at all times in order to develop entrepreneurial skills for the future. Walking around this pristine college we were struck by how comprehensive the facility is in terms of attention to detail and latest classroom technology, with practice or training rooms for learning just about any major aspect of the hospitality sector. Accommodation for the students is also available on-site, offering a comfortable bed, en-suite bathroom and study area in each room. Later, we were treated to a delightful lunch in one of their dining rooms, cooked and served by the pupils themselves, where we chatted to the director of operations and student services, José Emmanuel Soler Roque. “The students at Les Roches do work very hard,” he explained, “but they reap the rewards when they leave as we ensure they are fully-equipped to enter leading corporate companies and enjoy long and successful careers in the hospitality field. Also, it is important to add that the skills the students learn here at Les Roches set them up to work in a large variety of business sectors, not just in the hospitality industry.” It spoke volumes to us that the students we observed were focused, seemingly happy and extremely wellmannered, and the facilities were second-to-none. Les Roches surpassed all our expectations and it is quite clear how they have gained such an outstanding reputation through their cutting-edge facilities and impressive dedication to experiential learning. WINE NOTES
From Santander to Catalonia… Via Hollywood By Andrew J Linn
There is an excellent wine made with Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from Catalonia’s Penedés region called Jean Leon. However, it is not made by some French visionary who may have taken his wine-producing experience to Catalonia to produce Bordeaux-style wines in Spain. Jean Leon’s real name was Ceferino Carrión, and he was born in Santander in 1928. As the result of a huge fire that destroyed the town centre in 1941 his family moved to Barcelona, where a few months later Ceferino’s father and brother died at sea when the fishing boat they were working on was torpedoed by an unidentified submarine. Ceferino decided to leave Spain and crossed illegally into France via the Pyrenees, but in a post-world-war-Paris there was no work for immigrants. He made his way to Le Havre and stowed away on a boat to New York. Within a day of arriving he was washing dishes in a club in the Rockefeller Centre for $4 a day. Jean Leon – which was the name he had taken – would later enlist in the US army during the Korean War, and on demob settle in Hollywood. His first job in the town was waiting at Villa Capri, a society restaurant owned by Frank Sinatra and Joe di Maggio. There he became friends with actors and actresses such as Natalie Wood, Grace Kelly, Lana Turner, Judy Garland and James Dean. It was James Dean who proposed to Jean they become partners in establishing Hollywood’s most luxurious restaurant, but Dean was killed in a car crash the day before he was due to sign the agreement. Undeterred Jean borrowed $3,500 from a friend and opened La Scala. Marilyn Monroe always dined early and insisted on having table 14; Paul Newman would arrive about 7.30 pm, followed by the likes of Humphrey Bogart, Warren Beatty (who always ate in the kitchen if he was on his own), Zsa Zsa Gabor, Fred Astaire, Elizabeth Taylor, Marlon Brando, Garry Cooper, David Jansen and Robert Wagner. On the night of 4 August 1962 Marilyn Monroe called Jean at the restaurant to say that she did not feel well enough to go out, and would he send some food round to her apartment. Jean took it himself, but when he arrived he realised she was not alone. He left the tray at the door and headed home. The next day Marilyn was found dead. Jean Leon knew five US presidents, and was with Nixon the night he lost the election. With Kennedy he would chat about Spain, although he would always say that Ford was the most affable of all the presidents he knew. The intrepid
ex-waiter returned to Spain in 1962 to realise his lifelong ambition of making wine. He found a vineyard in Catalonia’s Penedés region and paid a small fortune for cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay vines from Chateau Lafitte-Rothschild and Corton Charlemagne. When he planted the new varieties, which were unknown in Spain, the local bodega owners thought he was mad, but in 1964 he hired oenologist Jaume Rovira, with a simple instruction: make the best wine that can be produced in Spain. Jean Leon is no longer with us, but under the evercareful tutelage of the Torres family, which is now responsible for the brand, the production process initiated 50 years ago has changed little. Pesticides and herbicides are never employed, and the grapes are harvested bunch by bunch when they are ready, rather than all at once. The pressing of the grapes is slow and delicate and only the first pressing is used. Unquestionably the flagship of the bodega is the Jean Leon Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva, which always has two years in oak and two to three years in the bottle. In exceptional years a Gran Reserva is made, and this was the wine served at Ronald Reagan’s investiture in 1980. In 1993 Wine Magazine voted the 1983 vintage among the world’s best eight wines, and many other awards have been scored over the years. If you like claret, you have been doing yourself an injustice by not trying Jean Leon’s Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva. And if you thought the best Spanish red wines only come from Rioja and Ribera del Duero, you are in for a pleasant surprise. Prices for the middle-of-the-range are around €20. There is a Reserva and Gran Reserva, a Merlot, Chardonnay and Xarel.lo, and the 3055 range (Leon’s New York cab licence number) offers a Merlot-Petit Verdot, Chardonnay and Rosado.

KIDS CORNER
Meaningful Recreation During Summer By Elena Gatsenko
Should you make your child study during summer holidays or should you give children absolute freedom? Let’s talk about it and start with our childhood stereotypes - spending summer holidays outdoors by the house or summer cottage, or in the country (“retro cliché). Mowgli-style recreation often happened because our parents had no free time at all. Vacation leave from work in summer were short, and summer camps couldn’t accommodate everyone. So what did we do when our parents were at work? Active empirical world learning – green apricots, mulberry stains on the clothes, ice-cream bought with money received for collected glass bottles, burning tyres and putting amorces in the fire, secrets hidden in the ground, dead birds, ribwort leaf on scratch marks, tree houses and crossbows… Sounds romantic? Yes, it was. And now imagine your home-grown princess alone outdoors from morning till night.
Besides, the world has changed drastically in the last two decades. If you send your child for a walk in the safe yard by your house, you will probably find him/her sitting on a bench with a phone in his/her hands. Leisure activities and our attitude to quantity and content therefore have changed too. This challenges parents and teachers to find something for a child to do that would sound more appealing than gadgets and virtual games. To make children do something by force won’t work. Take away a tablet or a phone from schoolchildren and they will go through “withdrawals”. And if you impose control and fill in the child’s free time with reading schoolbooks or hire a couple of tutors, be ready for a conflict, resentment and distancing. A minute of child psychology… The main reason for misbehaviour, whining or abnormal behaviour by the older pre-schoolers is boredom. All children hate boredom, which is a synonym of idleness for them. Any game means a life
168 JULY & AUGUST 2018

and reality that children build and believe in. They stand guard, never leaving their “combat station”, fight “the enemies”, make a leaf soup, fly to space or… play angry birds. And that’s where children’s centres and summer camps will come in handy. For instance, El Campanario children’s centre offers a summer programme where children learn three languages simultaneously while playing. And they still have time for their own games and creative activities. Children learn continuously through games, theatre and quests, and at the same time enjoy recreation and improve their health. Certainly, a family vacation would bring the dearest and most significant childhood memories. But being honest, you cannot spend 90 days in a row playing, travelling and diversifying activities on an hourly basis. It is better to spend one quality weekend with your children, but plan it well. You can devise various interesting tasks, like a pirate’s treasure buried under a palm-tree, a real boyscout’s fire with marshmallow and sausages on sticks, or archaeological excavations of ancient dinosaur fossils. And it will be much better than two weeks in a holiday centre with entertainers. But make sure to dedicate the entire weekend to your children (and leave your phone and tablet at home). Meanwhile, the best addition to family outings is spending time in a summer camp. It is better to start with a day camp for a child to get used to being selfdependent gradually. Summer camp means long walks at the best time of the
day, balanced food and, most importantly, entertainment with intellectual, physical and social development. Even if you don’t work and can dedicate all the time to your child, he/she still needs not only communication with peers and socialisation, but also teamwork skills, understanding group environment, realising synergism as teamwork and shared victories. And summer camp is the place to acquire such skills. This type of recreation is especially important for children who are about to go to school. Summer camp will facilitate smooth transition from play to academic studies and will promote the child’s self-confidence. El Campanario has the following facilities for children: a real summer theatre, vegetable garden with named patches and edible crop, original programme “draw like a genius”, summer culinary school and unique programmes for each day with enhanced study of languages while playing. Clinical psychologist Elena Gatsenko is a head of the pacesetting polylingual International Kids Club, where her interactive rubric “kindergarten” is dedicated to questions of early development and education of pre-schoolers. Stroke’s No Yolk By Rachel Garrod Perhaps you have heard that eggs, because they are high in cholesterol, can increase your risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) such as heart attack and stroke? For me, a huge lover of eggs, research showing that consumption of eggs seems largely unrelated to the risk of CVD made a pleasing read. Published in 2013 in the BMJ, researchers found that moderate consumption of eggs, one a day, had no effect on your risk of CVD and, even better, results published in May in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that a high egg diet of 12 a week also showed no greater risk for CVD than no eggs. Best of all, researchers from China studying egg consumption and CVD in almost 84,000 subjects showed that for people who ate about one egg a day there was actually a 26 per cent lower risk of suffering from hemorrhagic stroke (stroke caused by a bleed in the brain). There was a 28 per cent lower risk of dying due to this type of stroke and an 18 per cent reduction in CVDrelated deaths. Wow, I was “eggstatic”: I probably eat 10-12 eggs a week, so this finding is good news for me. Because these studies are generally observational, we cannot assume that eating eggs is the cause of these reductions. However, since the studies are extensive and the authors were able to adjust for other confounding factors such as weight or age, there is a good chance eggs are protective. Eggs are a good source of protein and vitamins and of healthy phospholipids and carotenoids, so perhaps it’s these nutrients that are helping us. One other piece of research I came across this week concerns physiotherapy rehabilitation after a stroke. For many years the general thinking has been that most improvement occurs in the first few months after a stroke. However, in a recent major review of exercise after stroke (NIHR Dissemination Centre) beneficial effects were seen, mainly on balance, even up to five months post event. Since many studies do not include long-term stroke survivors we don’t know just how long people can go on improving. So, if you like eggs, great, eat them every day. And if, unfortunately, you have suffered from a stroke some time ago and are still having problems with balance, don’t give up hope – physiotherapy may still be beneficial. Vision Enhancement and Blood Pressure Relief Medical Minutes by John Schieszer
COMBATING HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE WITH SURGERY INSTEAD OF DAILY PILLS An operation that targets the nerves connected to the kidney has been found to significantly reduce blood pressure in patients with hypertension, according to a clinical trial led in the UK by Queen Mary University of London and Barts Health NHS Trust. If the findings are confirmed in more extensive clinical trials, the surgery could offer hope to patients with high blood pressure who do not respond to drugs, and are at increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, including stroke and heart attack. The international clinical trial, carried out from 2017 to 2018 at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in the UK by the NIHR Barts Biomedical Research Centre, tested a one-hour operation called renal denervation. It uses ultrasound energy to disrupt the nerves between the kidneys and the brain that carry signals for controlling blood pressure. For the current study, 146 patients in the United States, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and the United Kingdom were randomised to receive either renal denervation or a “sham procedure” (the surgical equivalent of a placebo). Patients also remained off blood pressure medications for two months unless specified blood pressure levels were exceeded. After two months, the renal denervation group experienced an 8.5 mm Hg reduction in blood pressure, which was a 6.3 mm Hg greater reduction compared with the sham group. More than 66 per cent of subjects treated with renal denervation demonstrated a 5 mm Hg or greater reduction in blood pressure, compared with 33 per cent in the sham group. No major adverse events were reported in either group, and the blood pressure lowering effect of renal denervation was consistent across sex and ethnicity. “These results leave us clinicians in no doubt that this ultrasound-based therapy works to improve blood pressure control, at least in the short term. Further larger trials will be needed to confirm the efficacy and safety of the technology, but we hope that they could lead to renal denervation therapy being offered as an alternative to lifelong medications for hypertension,” said UK principal investigator Dr. Melvin Lobo from Queen Mary University of London and Barts Health NHS Trust.
NEW ARTIFICIAL IRIS HELPING IMPROVE VISION The first stand-alone prosthetic iris is now helping improving vision for adults and children. The surgically implanted device is being to treat adults and children whose iris (the coloured part of the eye around the pupil) is completely missing or damaged due to a congenital condition called aniridia or other damage to the eye. “Patients with iris defects may experience severe vision problems, as well as dissatisfaction with the appearance of their eye,” said Dr. Malvina Eydelman, who is with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Dr. Eydelman said the approval of the first artificial iris provides a novel method to treat iris defects that reduces sensitivity to bright light and glare. Congenital aniridia is a rare genetic disorder in which the iris is completely or partially absent. The iris controls the amount of light entering the eye. Individuals with aniridia have sensitivity to light and other severe vision problems. In addition to congenital aniridia, the CustomFlex Artificial Iris is indicated to treat iris defects due to other reasons or conditions, such as albinism, traumatic injury or surgical removal due to melanoma. The CustomFlex Artificial Iris is made of thin, foldable medical-grade silicone and is custom-sized and coloured for each individual patient. A surgeon makes a small incision, inserts the device under the incision, unfolds it and smooths out the edges using surgical instruments. The prosthetic iris is held in place by the anatomical structures of the eye or, if needed, by sutures. The safety and effectiveness of the CustomFlex Artificial Iris was demonstrated primarily in a non-randomised clinical trial of 389 adult and paediatric patients with aniridia or other iris defects. The study found low rates of adverse events associated with the device or the surgical procedure. It is hoped that this will now helping scores of individuals who in the past had few or no options.

ROLLS-ROYCE CULLINAN
Magic Carpet Ride
for Luxury Off-Road Enjoyment
It was three years ago that Rolls-Royce announced it would launch Cullinan. At the time, the famous marque explained that customers around the world had asked it to build “The Rolls-Royce of SUVs… with luxury, performance and usability not seen before in the SUV market”. Many of these customers were younger, hugely successful high-net-worth individuals heavily engaged in the experience economy, “and they wanted a Rolls-Royce that would take them to the ends of the Earth in ultimate luxury”. Named after the largest diamond discovered (now residing among the British Crown Jewels), the Cullinan is an all-terrain high-bodied car that features a contemporary and functional design and is the first “three-box” car in the SUV-sector. Cullinan’s rear partition wall creates a distinct environment for passengers, separated from the luggage compartment; and it is the second new Rolls-Royce to sit on the all-new aluminium “Architecture of Luxury”. It was, says Rolls-Royce, “tested to destruction all over the planet… an incredibly capable off-roader that sees the development of the ‘Magic Carpet Ride’ for off-road enjoyment, without sacrificing any Rolls-Royce on-road behaviour”. The 6.75 litre twin-turbo V12 Rolls-Royce engine delivers 563bhp/420kW and 850Nm/627lb ft of torque to the all-new all-wheel drive, all-wheel steer sys-
tem; and the Cullinan offers a suite of Bespoke features developed specifically for the many various lifestyles of its owners including the Viewing Suite and the Recreation Module. Announcing the launch of the Cullinan, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös said, “Luxury is no longer an urban concept. More and more it is about embracing and experiencing the wider world. Our customers expect to go everywhere in luxury, effortlessly and without compromise, conquering the most challenging terrain to enjoy life’s most enriching experiences, wherever they may be. The Cullinan is incomparable and dramatically evolves the parameters of super-luxury travel, translating Rolls-Royce’s ethos of ‘Effortlessness’ into physical capability, anywhere in the world.” Added Peter Schwarzenbauer, chairman of Rolls-Royce and a BMW Group board member, “The launch of a new Rolls-Royce model is always a seminal moment in the luxury industry. Today we are setting a new standard by creating a new class of motoring and motor car for customers who are well-connected, highly mobile and have a global perspective. They want a new type of motor car that gives them unbounded access in ultimate luxury. Their sense of adventure and daring demands a ‘go-anywhere in ultimate luxury’ motor car that will both take them to and meet them at the pinnacle of life.”

According to Giles Taylor, director of design for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, “From the very beginning the design team treated this brand new Rolls-Royce as a unique, high bodied car. With global customer expectations in mind, our aim was twofold – realise a presence to match the magnificent capability of Cullinan, whilst setting sector defining standards for luxury and elegance. We know that many of our luxury patrons pursue sports or leisure hobbies that require precisely this type of go anywhere vehicle – Cullinan’s design gesture had to possess an immediate sense of effortless accomplishment. “The label SUV is now applied to anything with a two-box silhouette and the least suggestion of going off tarmac. We envisioned an authentic, three-box high-bodied all-terrain car with a convention-challenging design and absolute capability that would satisfy the adventurous urges of our clients. And a final word from Cory Richards, National Geographic photographer and star of The Final Challenge, “This landscape is savage, but this journey has been seamless. What’s unique is the ability to absorb the road without thought and simply let yourself get lost. You don’t so much drive as you float and it seems to get almost smoother the faster you go. The turning and the grip are unreal, almost hugging the road and seeming to glide above it. Sometimes making pictures is as much about getting there as it is about the image itself.”
The Cullinan… In More Detail
For the first time a Rolls-Royce has an opening tailgate, called “The Clasp”, developed as a nod to the era when luggage was mounted on the exterior of the motor car so the occupants did not travel with their belongings. The rear profile of the Cullinan is a two-part “D-Back” format, with the bustle denoting the place of the luggage. “The Clasp” opens and closes in its two sections automatically at the touch of the key fob button. The rear passenger compartment has been designed to offer “the best seat in the house” for the owner’s particular needs. Two rear configurations are offered – Lounge Seats or Individual Seats. The Lounge Seat configuration is the more functional of the two options. With space for three passengers in the rear, it will likely be more attractive to families. The rear seats also fold down – a first for Rolls-Royce. Rolls-Royce’s investment in making the rear of the Cullinan more practical has the side benefit of offering a loading length longer than a Range Rover Vogue Extended Wheelbase. The Individual Seat configuration is “for those who value the ultimate luxury an SUV can offer over practicality”. The two individual rear seats are separated by a Fixed Rear Centre Console incorporating a drinks cabinet with Rolls-Royce whisky glasses and decanter, champagne flutes and refrigerator. The seats also move in a number of planes to offer ultimate comfort while travelling in the rear. One final feature is related to the creation of the “three-box” SUV. “Inspired by the age when one never travelled with one’s luggage, a glass partition isolates the passenger cabin from the luggage compartment, creating an inner ecosystem for the occupants. In addition to enhanced and classleading silence within the cabin, a further benefit becomes clear in the hottest and coldest of environments. Thanks to the sealed cabin created by the glass partition wall, the occupants can remain in the optimum temperature even when the luggage compartment stands open.” HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

A Journey With Andy Warhol AT MÁLAGA’S PICASSO MUSEUM
Visitors to the Museo Picasso Málaga this summer will be able to gain a rare and expansive insight into Andy Warhol’s hugely diverse body of career work. Remaining on show until 16 September, “Warhol. Mechanical Art” is described as providing “a complete and polyhedral journey that enables visitors to follow the creative development of this exceptional artist from his beginnings as a budding commercial graphic designer in New York City in the 1950s to his death in 1987, by which time he had become a universal legend”. The show highlights various aspects of Warhol’s work, including “the innovative way in which he applied the idea of processing to his multi-faceted serial work, the strong biographical links, his artistic production, and his originality and talent for transversally and cyclically combining different techniques, media and iconographic repertoires. He created representations that are canons, as they form part of the official history of Western art, and symbols, having become part of contemporary collective popular imagery.” collected and updated 19th-century industrial inventions. According to the organisers, “He used all kinds of techniques and machinery, from silkscreen printing to video recorders, and considered the editing process important as an essential principle of his work, using production methods that he himself defined as ‘those of the assemblyline’. He even went on to describe his own work as mechanical and apparently impersonal art, short-circuiting the temptation to endow it with intentional spiritual qualities that he cynically did not wish to be attributed to it. Warhol’s nihilistic silence on a body of work as spectacularly visual as his own is, paradoxically, one of the very factors that gives his work its poetic status.” The exhibition also highlights some of Warhol’s more iconic installations, such as the space that contains the Silver Clouds, which were made from an experimental reflecting material specially manufactured for the NASA space programme, conveying the lightness of the sky and the weightlessness of outer space. Also, on display is Exploding Plastic Inevitable, the extravaganza that included performances by The Velvet Underground and Nico - a conceptual explosion of sound and motion - and a documentation area from the Paul Maréchal Collection (Canada) which contains a wide variety of Warhol collaborations on record sleeves, posters, adverts, books and TV. www.museopicassomalaga.org

Es.Arte Gallery
A DIVERSE SHOWCASE OF EXCLUSIVE CONTEMPORARY ART
In just one year, Es.Arte Gallery has become a benchmark for the art market in Marbella and the Costa del Sol in general. This has been possible thanks to founder and director Marifé Núñez, an artist with an extensive career who says her key values are enthusiasm, work, creativity and passion. She has an excellent insight into the diverse facets of the art market and knows how to satisfy the requirements and preferences of the most demanding collectors as well as interior decorators. Es.Arte Gallery is a cultural space in constant evolution, every month featuring different works and artists, both emerging and established. These include Johan Wahlstrom, currently one of the best-selling artists in in New York; Alejandro Dron, whose sculptures have been on show in the Reina Sofia Museum and in Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada boutiques; and Zurab Tsereteli, Russia’s most important contemporary artist. “Our gallery is committed to variety and quality,” says Marifé Núñez. “It offers a space where people can enjoy lat-
est works and take home exclusive collectors’ pieces created by artists from all over the world.” The current exhibition at Es.Arte Gallery is “Hungry Earth (An Open Call for Awareness)”, which will remain on show until 28 July. This collective exhibition brings together works with a common message: raising awareness about the land we inhabit. “The objective,” says Marifé, “is to provide a catalyst for change, a call to action and awareness through art that crosses the limits of the visual and enters into our consciousness to convey this urgent message.” Es.Arte Gallery will also be present at the Marbella Art Fair from 21 to 25 July. FOCUS ON THE UNSEEN
THE CONSTRUCTION BOOM By Marco Dalli
It’s official: the Costa del Sol is booming and people from all over the world are discovering the benefits of investing and living in Spain, especially southern Spain. Of course, this has never been in doubt for the early pioneers who settled in this part of world many years ago. For example, the famous Golden Mile was only two lanes, the entrance to Puerto Banús was a dirt track, and you could drive in and out of Marbella port without a special pass. For those who were around at that time, there were only a handful of restaurants and bars, a drink at Sinatra’s bar (in Banús) was like going down to your local pub as you would know most of the people, and Victor’s Beach was the meeting place for most of the boats coming from all over the coast. At that time there were no restrictions to how close you could come to the shore and the line of boats would seem to go on forever. The Marmorin build and design studio is headquartered on the opposite side of the road to the iconic Marbella Club hotel, and it represents companies in the construction, design and property investment sectors that were all pioneers during Marbella’s early developing stages, before it became overcrowded with companies jumping onto the golden band wagon. So what are the potential problems and pitfalls? The main problem on this part of the coast is that you never know who you are dealing with. I have been
living in Marbella for 35 years and I still get caught out. One of the biggest ways to become confused is when looking to invest or build in this part of the world. If you don’t know the zone well you are just relying on what you hear from people; everyone’s a so-called expert, especially when it comes to construction. It took us a long time to really find the best building company to incorporate into the studio with the other top professional companies operating inside. You can’t create a designer’s project without having a very good construction side to the project, and we were aware of this. ANS Construction was a company we found out about purely by luck. We heard that this German-Spanish set-up was where all the other constructors went to with their problems and that really said it all. They were the only constructors that gave a 15-year guarantee on damp issues, which to me said everything. After looking at the large and small projects they have done on the coast and in Germany, we made them preferred partners to enter the studio and complement everyone else. Our aim is very simple: we want you to know the professionals you are dealing with, and have all of them working together under one roof. People always focus on what they see, but the wiser way to do it is to focus on the unseen and what is going on behind the walls and under the floor.

FINCA LA DONAIRA A WAY OF LIFE…
You would be forgiven for thinking that this sleepy neighbourhood nestled in the hills near Ronda, and situated near the whitewashed Andalucian village of El Gastor, is like any other traditional town we come across in southern Spain, but be prepared to be blown away… Cars are not allowed up to La Donaira so they insist that you meet a member of staff at La Posada - a small and unassuming inn centrally located in El Gastor, which has a charming little boutique shop selling products made locally in the area. It is at La Posada where you leave your car and are then taken up the rugged roads east of the town to the final destination, Finca La Donaira. The property spans 1,700 acres across the Serranía de Ronda with around 80 Lusitano horses freely grazing on the vast open pastures that surround it. The entire focus of this luxurious boutique hotel is ecocentrism, and their unrelenting respect for the environment and nature earned them the title of Best Eco Hotel in the 2018 Spain Luxury Hotel Awards. Their water comes directly from the mountains and, thanks to the holistic permaculture system they have adopted, all their produce is taken from the land, offering a true farm-to-table gastronomic experience. At mealtimes, you will hear a tinkle of a bell signalling that the kitchen staff await you. Guests are encouraged to dine together around a large wooden table in the spacious open kitchen to allow free-flowing conversation and ex-
change of ideas whilst enjoying the healthy organic gastronomy prepared for you straight from their garden. In between mealtimes guests can help themselves to whatever is in the kitchen as if they were at home. The design of the hotel embraces the formidable natural scenery that surrounds it, with large-scale windows engulfing the rooms with natural sunlight and allowing you to visually devour the breath-taking beauty beyond. As you would expect, natural materials such as natural stone and wood are utilised throughout the hotel. In the main building, each of the seven bedrooms has a huge four-poster double bed shrouded by elegant mosquito nets with high-quality bed linen and extremely comfortable mattresses. There is a glass wardrobe with interior lighting and a bathroom with natural stone sinks, a free-standing copper bath and taps made from recycled copper piping. Each room has a different characteristic, but the interior design is always chic and contemporary. Also, for those who really want to immerse themselves in nature, there are two luxury yurts near the main building. The rangy living room is home to a beautiful Steinway grand piano where the charismatic owner likes to play classical music when he is in residence. Even though he only visits once or twice a month, he is very hands-on, consulting with the friendly and enthusiastic staff, chatting with guests and constantly planning the next development of this dynamic project.

There is an outdoor swimming pool filled with natural spring water and flower beds bursting with wild flowers and shrubs. If you feel like some pampering, meander up the stony path to their impressive spa, which houses a 21-metre indoor swimming pool with sensational views as far as the eye can see over the valleys. There is a hammam and Russian wooden sauna as well as an ice plunge pool. Aside from the spa there is also a small building set aside for massage for the ultimate relaxation, where they offer aromatherapy, osteopathic and stress-reducing Thai massage as well as a deep tissue workout. If activities are more your gig, then the equestrian centre offers horse riding lessons, hacks and dressage. You can also enjoy yoga, mountain biking, hiking and trekking, farm tours, garden tours, gastronomic workshops and tastings plus stargazing guides. From 14 to 19 August, La Donaira plays host to the Pause Festival. The event brings together talented musicians to celebrate nature and artistic expression through improvised sessions, workshops and open-air concerts whilst guests disconnect from their busy lives and relax into a magical evening of musical performances. If you need a break away from the hubbub of the Coast, La Donaira delivers on every level, offering a wonderfully special experience. To be able to combine eco-friendliness and sustainability with luxury in such a seemingly effortless way is quite an achievement by anyone’s standards - and La Donaira has achieved this triumphantly.  Tel. SPECTACULAR ANNUAL HERRING PARTY IN MARBELLA On a beautiful, warm Sunday evening in June, members of the Marbella Dutch Business Club held their 15th edition of the Herring Party, at the Puente Romano Hotel’s superb “Chiringuito Ibiza”. In all, 280 extremely elegant guests enjoyed Dutch herring and other delicacies such as wild salmon, eel, caviar, fish soup and, of course, delicious oysters. As is the custom every year, the “Golden Herring” was awarded to “a Dutchman” (male or female) who had made great efforts in Spain to promote “the good name of the Netherlands”. This year, Marijke de Nier of Residencia Estates received the prestigious award. Ger Vos and Mariska van Kolck made sure that everyone ended up on the dance floor, which helped turned the evening into another great party. As part of another Herring Party tradition, part of the proceeds of the evening went to the charity “Free a Girl”. ACOOLA DÉCOR & STYLING
OUTDOOR AREAS BLENDED WITH INDOOR LIVING SPACES Belgium-owned company Acoola, already well-established in San Pedro de Alcántara, is increasingly focusing on exterior furniture, after interior and exterior designer Cathelijne de Vilder recently partnered with the company to head the new décor division. With her extensive expertise in both indoor and outdoor styling, Cathelijne creates terraces and al fresco areas that become an extension of the inside living areas. As she notes, “Especially here in Marbella, where we have many warm evenings, the terrace can become the best place in the house. “Outdoor rugs and feature lamps add extra warmth and cosiness to the ‘outside room’. It is exuberant and fun to place them in groups and in different sizes and shapes. The light they spread is extremely cosy and immediately transforms the exterior into a warm and attractive space. By adding lots of green, wood and natural products in combination with the right outdoor furniture we create a wonderful, timeless design.” Those wanting more styling tips for their terrace, or looking for the perfect outdoor furniture set, are invited to contact Cathelijne at: Tel. TIMELESS STYLE WITH A NATURAL FLAIR Apartamento54 emerged from an idea nurtured by its creator, Ana Karla Poplawski, after many years working in the interior design industry and gaining specialist insight through both her family and her professional contacts. She grew up in an environment where taking caring of the home aesthetic was a natural issue: linen bed sheets, fresh flowers and exotic rugs were part of her personal growth and surroundings. “The concept of this special space,” she says, “is one of being at home, where the blend of modern and vintage creates a sense of the natural evolution of a house: that is, everything mixes naturally… pieces inherited from the family, modern pieces purchased as key elements, and the capricious and timeless, sometimes ethnic, items bought on travels.” Avda. del Mediterráneo, Edif. 9 LIONS RESIDENCES
LEADING INVESTMENT GROUP LAUNCHES HIGH-LUXURY DEVELOPMENT IN MARBELLA
Part of the Lewis Trust Group (best known for owning international fashion brand River Island), UK & European Investments have now added 9 Lions Residences in Marbella to their portfolio of Spanish property developments. With this addition to other projects in Barcelona and Madrid, their investment commitments in Spain total €130 million and they are actively seeking more opportunities throughout the country. “We have been looking for development sites across the whole of Spain,” explains managing director Fraser Denton, “but our criteria is strict as we seek only prime projects. This means that the development must combine a privileged location with unique designs, styled with the buyer in mind.” Located in Nueva Andalucía, only a few minutes from Puerto Banús, 9 Lions Residences sits within golf surroundings offering stunning views, is
adjacent to a large lake with hiking tracks and a picnic area, and features a blend of traditional Andalucian architecture within a contemporary context. “We believe that the longevity of an authentic architectural style is essential for our residential developments,” adds Fraser. “9 Lions Residences clearly represents the charm of Andalucía whilst meeting the demands of today’s buying market.” While the UK-based group is open to opportunities across all of Europe, Fraser notes, “Personally I always feel very positive about potential investments in Spain. Even in times of crisis! Because past experiences have proven that the market always comes back strong. Marbella, in particular, is consistently appealing.” www.9lionsresidences.com / www.ukandeuropean.com

MORTEX
A DYNAMIC AND SENSUAL MATERIAL FOR YOUR HOME
Mortex is a cutting-edge micro-mortar mineral developed by Beal and made from natural lime, among other materials. Ideal for new construction or renovation projects, this material is flexible and therefore reduces the risk of cracking (unlike other materials on the market). It is also waterproof so it can be applied inside your home, including damp areas such as the bathroom or the kitchen, as well as outside. Mortex can be applied to virtually anywhere, from floors to
walls – the possibilities are endless. It also can cover tiles, MDF and cement without demolition and only needs to be applied thinly, so it has the advantage of low product consumption. Mortex is a sensual material with a polished concrete appearance, but do not be fooled by its aesthetic beauty, as it is not only attractive but also very durable and resistant to abrasion. Tel. EXPERT ADVICE
Non-Resident Income Tax in Spain Article supplied by Welex Lawyers & Accountants
Spain’s non-resident income tax (IRNR) is a direct tax levied on income obtained in Spanish territory by individuals and entities that are not residents of Spain. If you are not a resident of Spain and you own a property in the country, you will be subject to the IRNR and real estate tax. When one property is owned by a married couple or several people, each of them is considered an independent taxpayer, so they must submit separate statements. I own an urban property in Spain. What do I have to pay? When you own urban real estate for your own use, in most cases, the amount you must declare is two per cent of the property’s cadastral value, which is included on your property tax receipt (IBI). For real estate whose cadastral value has been revised and has come into force during the tax period or within the 10 previous tax periods, you must declare 1.1 per cent of the property’s cadastral value. You should declare a portion of this amount if you have not owned the property throughout the year or if it has been rented out for a period of time during the year. Income from Rental Properties In general, the amount that must be declared is the full amount received from the tenant, without deducting any expenses. However, taxpayers who reside in another part of the European Union and, since 1 January 2015, in Iceland and Norway may deduct the expenses foreseen in the Tax Law on Personal Income, provided they can prove that the expenses are directly related to income obtained in Spain and that they have a direct economic link that is inseparable from the activity carried out in Spain. Are the profits from selling a property subject to taxation for non-residents? Yes. The profits produced from the sale of a property since 1 January 2015 are calculated as follows: · The acquisition value is the real amount for which the property was purchased, to which the cost of the expenses and taxes inherent to the acquisition, excluding interest (which would have been paid by the transferring party), will be added.
· The sales value is the real amount for which the sale was made, reduced by the cost of the expenses and taxes inherent to the conveyance, which are paid by the seller. Note that there is a partial exemption for the sale of urban real estate bought between 12 May and 31 December 2012. This partial exemption does not apply: 1) In the case of natural persons, when the property has been acquired or conveyed to his or her spouse; to any person united to the taxpayer by kinship, in a straight line or collateral, by consanguinity or affinity, up to the second degree included; to an entity, taxpayer or any of the aforementioned persons, in which any of the circumstances established in article 42 of the Commercial Code takes place, regardless of the residence and the obligation to formulate consolidated annual accounts. 2) In the case of entities, when the property has been acquired or conveyed to a person or entity in the case of any of the circumstances established in article 42 of the Commercial Code, regardless of the residence and the obligation to formulate consolidated annual accounts; or the spouse of the aforementioned person or any person linked to him/her by kinship, in a straight line or collateral, by consanguinity or affinity, up to the second degree included. I want to sell my property in Spain. Will I receive the full sale price? The person who acquires your property, whether or not that person is a Spanish resident, is obliged to withhold and deposit three per cent of the agreed sale price at the Tax Office. For the seller, this withholding is a payment of the corresponding capital gains tax derived from the conveyance. Therefore, the purchaser will deliver to the non-resident vendor a copy of model 211 (by means of which the withholding has been deposited) so that the latter can deduct the withholding from his or her capital gains. If the amount withheld is higher than the fee to be paid, the excess will be refunded. In the event that the withholding is not paid, the property will be subject to payment of the lesser amount between the withholding and the corresponding tax. Where does this tax apply? This tax will be applied throughout Spanish territory, without prejudice to the provisions of international treaties and agreements that have become part of the internal legal system, in accordance with Article 96 of the Spanish Constitution.
