Editorial September is one of the international design and home décor industry’s most important months. Leading the way will be this year’s second Paris edition of Maison & Objet from 7 to 11 September, in conjunction with Paris Design Week (7-15 September). For the twice-annual Inspirations Forum at Maison & Objet, experts are invited to analyse new consumer trends and present them under a broad theme – to “shed light on the very diverse and cross-industry trends that impact the market and shape the future”. This edition’s theme is “Virtuous”. According to Vincent Grégoire, designer and scenographer of the forum and the Bookshop-Café, the starting point for “Virtuous” was prompted by disruptions to daily-life environments. “We must put an end to this shift towards generalised over-stimulation. We need new rules, a more virtuous ethic, innovative solutions for alternative growth and consumer practices. “Respecting our fellow human beings and nature-saving natural resources, passing knowledge on to future generations, fighting planned obsolescence: such are the challenges of the 21st century. By encouraging this virtuous circle we are creating a new dynamic that will ultimately benefit each of us.” Later, the London Design Festival takes over the agenda from 15 to 23 September, with the vision of “celebrating and promoting London as the design capital of the world”. This 16th edition of the festival returns to V&A as the official hub for a 10th year, comprising nine days of celebrations covering more than 400 events, exhibitions and installations. Announcing the 2018 programme, festival director Ben Evans said, “London and Design go hand in hand. It is part of our story. London Design Festival is a platform for hundreds of design stories to be told. Each of them talks to an expanding audience hungry for design ideas and enjoying the quality and diversity of what’s on offer. It all confirms London’s status as the global centre of design.” Added V&A director Tristram Hunt, “This year’s programme is bigger and more ambitious than ever, and presents a unique opportunity for leading designers to engage with and respond to the V&A’s world-class collections of art, design and performance. London Design Festival occupies a vital role in London’s thriving design sector.” Design Districts and Design Destinations play a key role in the festival, curating an ambitious programme of projects across London that give visitors and Londoners “an opportunity to experience, discover and be inspired by world-class design”. The Design Destinations are five major trade shows spread around the capital that house a wealth of new product launches, and showcase current and future trends, as well as acting as a platform to promote new emerging talent. In addition to the overall platform of the London Design Festival, the other four are 100% Design, Decorex International, designjunction and Focus/18. Looking further ahead, the World Architecture Festival Awards will also be held in Europe this year, from 28 to 30 November at RAI Amsterdam. The festival is “dedicated to celebrating, sharing and inspiring outstanding architecture… the only architecture event where keynote talks from the industry’s most influential figures sit alongside live judging presentations from over 500 award finalists plus global networking and an international product exhibition.” Plenty of options, therefore, to enjoy a global showcase this month of inspiring trends and ideas that can be incorporated into our homes in autumn and winter – obviously also after checking out our own potpourri of stunning products and services highlighted in this new issue of Home & Lifestyle Magazine.

The magic of

CANDLES The flickering flame from a candle can be mesmerising. Candlelight creates a wonderfully romantic ambience, offering soft and warm light. Scented candles are excellent for the mind and soul - and immediately make you feel welcome when entering a room.

The Carat candlestick holder from Orrefors was designed by Lena BergstrÜm, who was inspired by jewels and gemstones. She used new techniques to achieve the look of cut diamonds, to give this candleholder a magical and exquisite look. High-Tech Homes Danish luxury audio brand Bang & Olufsen have incorporated Google Assistant2 into their Beosound 1 and Beosound 2 smart speakers. The conical body of Beosound 1 and Beosound 2 hovers slightly above the surface, releasing thumps of bass from beneath. At the top, which is slightly open, the speaker driver plays downwards into an acoustical lens, creating an evenly distributed spherical sound profile. To make sure that the Google Assistant can hear commands through the wall of sound coming from the speakers, B&O’s sound engineers have built advanced acoustic echo-cancelling technology and five microphones into the aluminium structure that constantly analyses which sounds come from the speaker and which are commands from the consumer. Bang & Olufsen is available from Illusion in Urb. Guadalcántara (www.e-illusion.es).

BENINGTON

CHIC BESPOKE FURNITURE WITH A HOMELY TOUCH Interview with Imadeus Johanen Photos by Julia Roder (www.juliaroder.com)

What were Benington’s origins? After many years of cooperation with Sia Home Fashion - we have run five Sia stores in Stockholm - I chose to start my own brand, Benington. Where does the name Benington come from? The name came to my head after a visit, for personal reasons, to St Peter’s Church in Benington (about 40 kilometres north of London). After that, I couldn’t erase the name from my head, so I let my brand be Benington. What can clients expect when they visit your showroom on the Golden Mile? Our goal is for clients, when they step into the showroom, to feel at home. For everyone who visits us to become inspired to make some changes or improvements to their home. So we say to all clients when they arrive, “Welcome to Benington - welcome home”. Can you tell us more about your products? Our products are divided into three groups: 1. The upholstered furniture is of a high quality, with every piece carefully hand-made in Europe (Sweden, Spain, Portugal and Poland). In

this category we offer clients numerous options to choose fabrics from leading producers including Mullbery, Kravet, Harlequin, Kobe, Jonathan Adler, Zimmer + Rohde, Nina Campbell, Osborne and Little, Morris and others. The flexibility to change fabrics and sizes for sofas or tables is one of our basic ideas and concepts. We are the ones who have to adapt to the customer - not the other way around. 2. The metal and wood furniture is all made exclusively for Benington in limited editions, never more than 15 pieces of each one. 3. Then we have items from carefully chosen brands such as Jonathan Adler, Buster + Punch, Orrefors and Georg Jensen - with more coming. Can you also design furniture to your clients’ requirements and preferences? Certainly… in fact , I design most of my furniture items. and that’s why you can only find our furniture at Benington. ALEJANDRO GIMÉNEZ

CREATING HARMONY, BEAUTY AND PEACE Both an architect and an interior designer, Alejandro Giménez was born in Málaga in 1972. He studied in Spain and America before graduating from Sevilla’s College of Architecture in 1999. His style is heavily influenced by the style of architecture where he lives and where he grew up on southern Spain’s Mediterranean coast. However, he has also spent considerable time in both Mexico and Japan (his wife is Japanese), and he incorporates ideas, colours and spaces from both countries in his designs. These influences, he explains, are carried out in order to create harmony, beauty and peaceful spaces. “My goal is to create a pure, serene and relaxing space that is a pleasure to live in and somewhere to look forward to returning to after a hard day’s work.” CASA ISABEL Alejandro Giménez Architects began a comprehensive reform and expansion of this Marbella villa - located in an exceptional setting based on three basic aspects that would give meaning to every decision made later: - Conservation and enhancement of the main features and interesting original elements, such as a fireplace in the main room, visible from several points of the home. - Creation of different spaces that met the new needs of the owners and were in line with the existing environment. - Strengthening the home’s indoor and outdoor connections by incorporating large windows, depending on the orientation and space requirements, as well as by using natural materials such as wood ( finishes, furniture and representative or decorative elements) and Mortex (on the pavement), providing consistency and continuity to the overall house. CONCEPTS AND MATERIALS Alejandro says his studio’s architecture is based on two main features: design and timelessness. “We use local materials to play with textures which create a cosy atmosphere in every space. Our architecture merges tradition and modernity, obtaining the best from the classic Andalucian style to produce timeless villas where the materials have a major significance. “In this house we used craft wood which, mixed with Mortex, gives the house its warmth and identity. Water is also a very important element and is therefore constantly present in the house. The courtyards which surround the villa have fountains which recall the area’s Arab-Andalucian past and enhance the relaxing ambience. Light also has a relevant role in the project. We took great care designing the way that light functions in the house, to create a mystery-tinged environment. We obtained this through lighting white boxes which produce an indirect illumination that highlights the spaces, from inside to out. All of these creates a sense of continuity and harmony.” Alejandro Giménez Architects Plaza de Manilva 6, Estepona Tel. Wellis Whirlpool incorporate a variety of energy-efficient features that have the benefit of extremely low operating costs. They also offer the guarantee and efficiency of their own manufacturing factory in Europe. They produce optimal quality and premium whirlpools with a price to performance ratio that no other retailer can offer, as well as a 24-month guarantee and superb German specialist services at an international level. Our increasingly stressful lives leave us desperate for small oases of peace and leisure to help us escape the everyday hustle and bustle for a few precious moments and dedicate ourselves to good health and wellbeing. A Wellis moment invites you to rest, taking you away from the stresses of the day in a sublime haven of relaxation. “Immerse your body and soul in a Wellis whirlpool, move your toes in the warm water, and feel the growing sense of relaxation. Leg muscles relax, that agonising tugging in the back calms down and the release of endorphins is stimulated, thus providing natural pain relief. You will feel the tension in your neck slowly fade away. Stretch your shoulders, arms, body and soul and feel great again - every day and almost like a teenager. “Turn your nights into day in our Wellis hot tub. Choose a soothing colour of pool lighting that suits your mood, or let yourself be pampered with our infusion aroma of various fragrances and your favourite music in combination with a hydromassage or the exceptional magnetic Vario massage.” Water therapy is considered to be a real blessing for people with sleep disorders, rheumatism, arthritis, osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis (MS), asthma or chronic joint or back problems. It stimulates metabolism, promotes blood circulation, and strengthens skin vessels and the muscles - thus reducing stress. Another important advantage of the Wellis pool is that the water temperature and all functions are easy to use. It can be cooler (e.g. for MS) or warmer ( for arthritis) and is controllable by “Touch 2” via a Wi-Fi network with home internet connection from your IOS or Android devices. Easy to use at any time of the day and from anywhere… A Wellis whirlpool is a blend of ancient therapies and cutting-edge technology, a lifestyle statement that provides enjoyment combined with environmental awareness, and a place you can enjoy and cherish with family and friends - in tune with your own circumstances and with whatever model suits your requirements and preferences. As Wellis note, “We want you to enjoy the benefits of your spa and premium quality for years to come.” Wellis invite those interested to a glass of champagne in their new premises in Marbella where they will be pleased to present their premium Wellis pools. They offer a well-trained German technical service team, and provide all associated connections for a Wellis whirlpool in any location, garden or patio. “No location is unattainable for us!” Juan de la Cierva 1, Marbella. ESTUCO INTERIOR DESIGN

ECLECTIC FLAIR WITH A NATURAL TOUCH Interview with Christina Poveromo

Estuco Interiors is a well-established company. Can you tell us how you started? Christel and I formed a business partnership together in 2000 after having known each other for many years. The timing was perfect as we had been offered two show flats in Los Arqueros, which gave us so much work. The rest is history!

with several property developers who want a beautiful decoration to finish off the house and make the sale. What do you most enjoy about your work? Every day is different. We enjoy meeting new clients and starting new projects. No two projects are ever the same and it’s always exciting sourcing new products from all over the world.

How have you evolved over the many years you have been on the Coast? We started off in the La Campana industrial estate with three large showrooms and a studio. In the early years we had so much work that a 12-hour day was normal, but when the crisis of 2008 hit we quickly realised that we needed more exposure and made the decision to invest in our future and move to Centro Plaza, where we have never looked back. We now have four units which make up two large showrooms.

What is your vision for the company? Our vision is to carry on marking beautiful homes for our clients. We have a wonderful team who all love their work. We are multilingual, speaking Swedish, Danish, Spanish and English. We aim to always have new, exceptional and different pieces in our showroom, as we now have a reputation for our wonderful products, with many returning clients.

Do you have a certain style or look that you follow? We tend to have an eclectic style. If we are designing a very modern home, for example, we will always add some antiques or ethnic pieces. Our designs tend to be neutral palettes using rich but natural fabrics with accents, such as strongly-patterned cushions and beautiful artwork.

In conclusion… We have recently completed two amazing properties in Norway. We have one shop dedicated to Farrow & Ball and Designs Guild paint, and many brands of wallpaper, artwork and decorative items. We have one of the largest collections of curtain and upholstery fabrics on the Coast.

How would you summarise the market at present and how you fit into it? The market is growing and we are never short of new projects. Our main clientele are Scandinavians, which suits our design style perfectly. We also work

VIP ENVIRONMENT

CONTEMPORARY STYLE WITH FIRST-CLASS GERMAN QUALITY Interview with Philip Wilding Photos by Toomas Reigo: www.toomasreigo.com You are a new business on the Coast…. What made you settle on Marbella? We have had a holiday home in Marbella for a few years and love the lifestyle. We work hard and play hard and we both enjoy golf so it’s the perfect place. We did live in Harrogate before moving to Spain - which was voted the best place to live in the UK - so we have come from one great place to another, without the cold winter of the UK! Tell us more about the brands that you work with… After 30 years of retailing contemporary furniture with interior design, at some point we have sold most high-end brands from many countries in Europe. All have their good points but, like their cars, if you want furniture that’s well designed, built to the highest standard and with the best service, then German products stand out. A perfect example of this is the Hulsta collection of beds. From Italian companies you can also get a well-designed bed frame. However, with Hulsta’s beds, whether boxspring or slatted base, you get a beautifully designed frame with an award-winning sleeping system for a perfect sleep… with a comprehensive collection of bedside units, chests of drawers, dressing tables and wardrobes to match. Rolf Benz is one of the best, if not the best, upholstery companies for design, quality and comfort. For some reason this level of comfort is missing from many of their competitors. They offer a large collection of models as well as dining tables, chairs and coffee tables. A few years ago, Hulsta introduced a new collection called Now! This offers furniture which is all still made in Germany in the same factories as the main ranges but at a lower price. Customers are amazed that they can have their two-bedroom holiday home completely furnished with Hulsta’s quality for under €15,000. To complete our collection, we have many other brands including outdoor furniture from companies such as Cane Line and Vondom, rugs, wallpaper, fabrics and accessories. In what way do you feel the brands you work with fit into the contemporary Mediterranean home? Contemporary design is what we specialise in and the furniture we offer will perfectly complement homes that are being built here. Style, comfort and quality have to go hand in hand. We have been designing contemporary interiors for over 30 years and we know how products work together to create a home that not only looks great but works for modern-day living and gives you a sense of pleasure each time you close a cupboard door or drawer. What are the main services that VIP Environment offer? Clients of VIP Environment require different things. Some just come into our beautiful showroom to purchase a particular item such as a TV unit or bed; others want a full interior design service. In both cases we are on hand to help. Our knowledge of contemporary furniture is vast and we can help guide customers to suit their needs. We offer a full free CAD design service so customers can visualise their finished home. Gardens

Gardens with Fewer Colours

Monochromatic certainly doesn’t mean monotonous… By Alia Babapulle

Monochromatic gardens make use of a single colour to create a visually appealing display. I personally love them and have said before that, especially in a small garden, they look lovely. Less is More, in fact. A single colour garden design is anything but boring if done well. Variations in shades and textures keep it all interesting. When creating a monochromatic garden, use many different shades of your chosen colour. For example, purple gardens can include everything from pale lavender to a purple so deep that it is almost black. Yellow schemes for gardens can range from pale, buttery-coloured flowers to deep gold. Before choosing which you prefer, decide whether warm or cool will work best in your landscape. Cool colours have, of course, a calming effect and make the garden look larger by appearing as though they are seen at a distance. They include blues, violet and white. Warm colours, such as orange, red and yellow, create a feeling of excitement and make the garden appear smaller. Gardening with one colour gives those who visit the garden a feeling of calm serenity. Instead of jumping from one to the next, the eye lingers on each flower, picking out each blossom’s details. Form and texture take on a more important role in a monochromatic garden. Include some soft light fluffy flowers as well as stiff spikes. Simple, daisy-like blossoms

pop out when tucked among more complicated forms. Small, finely cut leaves have a light, airy appeal. Large, leathery leaves add structure and a sense of solidity; use both to build depth. While variety spices up monochromatic gardens, large drifts of a single flower can be breathtaking. Spring bulbs are particularly well-suited to single-colour drifts that focus attention. Drifts, or mass plantings, are most effective when seen at a distance. Schemes for gardens should also take into account the colour of the foliage. Pale foliage with hints of yellow or yellow variegation, for instance, look terrific with dark blue or purple flowers. Variegation is an excellent tool for adding variety and colour but be careful: too much variegation can look hectic and busy. Another thing to consider when creating your garden is when it blooms. Most perennials have a limited period. Plan to have centres of interest throughout the season. If you have colourless spots despite your plans, fill them in with annuals. Most annuals have a long bloom season and they are inexpensive and readily available throughout the year. They’ll begin blooming soon after you plant them; and when they are through you can simply dig them up and replace them. This will get you going - I will carry on with the theme next time. In the meantime, good planting.

DELICIOUS PUMPKIN SOUP (6 servings) 1 whole pumpkin 4 carrots 1 parsnip 4 scallop onions 4 cloves garlic 1 cup dry white wine 1 litre vegetable or chicken stock 2 dl. cream 1 dl. sour cream virgin olive oil flake salt and moulded pepper fresh twigs of thyme fennel seeds your favourite chilli spices 200 gr. pumpkin seeds

Toast the pumpkin seeds with a large spoonful of flake salt on a dry frying pan at pretty high temperature for a few minutes until they start to get golden. Keep an eye on them the whole time so they don’t end up behaving like popcorn. Open the pumpkin into two large pieces and remove all the seeds with a spoon, then mark squares in the pumpkin meat with a sharp knife. Put the pumpkins in an oven-proof dish with the garlic on top, pour a little olive oil over and sprinkle with all the spices. Bake in the oven for approximately 30 minutes at 200 degrees. Chop the rest of the vegetables into smaller pieces and toast them in a pan with a little olive oil, pour the white wine over and reduce the liquid to half. Pour the stock and the cream over and let it cook at medium heat until all the vegetables are tender. Take the pumpkin out of the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before removing all the pumpkin meat from the shell. Bring the pumpkin meat, the vegetables and its liquid into a blender and blend it until it is soft and creamy. Serve the soup in a bowl and top it before serving with a spoonful of sour cream, salt-roasted pumpkin seeds and a couple of fresh thyme twigs. As a side dish, serve the delicious homemade beer bread, which of course is filled with pumpkin seeds for this delicious soup. It can be made the day before, if you do not want to be in the kitchen when guests arrive. In our family, we often invite guests to “second-day soup”, as the taste is more intense the day after. Enjoy!

KAH MARBELLA

New Pool Club in the Heart of Aloha After huge investment, planning and many months of construction, KAH has opened its doors to welcome locals, tourists, families and parties alike to its charming pool club right in the heart of Aloha. Throughout its creation, KAH has been sparking much curiosity amongst locals. Once a popular family pool club, over a decade ago, it has now been transformed into an enormous and luxurious setting aiming to offer something for everyone all-year-round, and giving guests the opportunity to take home wonderful memories. And it has indeed ticked every box in that quest. As you approach KAH, you cannot fail to miss its iconic pointed thatched roof. On entering, you then realise how immense this venue really is, with a stunning U-shaped swimming pool where visitors can relax and enjoy music with poolside service and a restaurant to the side overlooking the pool. Wherever you seem to go, there are different interesting areas - a shisha bar, a massage corner, a nightclub and, at the rear of the venue, a relaxing tropicaldecked garden with a central bar area. KAH note that they are not only a venue for adults but also for children. There is a supervised pool area to the side of the building so that you can relax and your children can play in a safe environment. The menu could be described as contemporary international cuisine featuring salads, meat and fish dishes as well as sandwiches, pizzas and pastas. All

of the dishes are creatively presented on their high-quality tableware with decent portion sizes and a good balance of flavours. Unlike many other beach or pool clubs on the Costa del Sol, KAH offer everything you would expect from a pool club but with a more tranquil vibe in a sophisticated environment. The design has been carefully thought-out: outside they combine lush vegetation, wooden flooring and water features harmonising with the natural environment, while inside they indulge in a glitzier dĂŠcor to give a more glamorous feel for their nightclub. By being open throughout the year and offering so many different ways to enjoy the venue, this newcomer on the block has positioned itself in a slightly different way to the others. KAH is certainly worth a visit, whether it is for a day by the pool, a meal or a night on the dance-floor. Open every day of the week from 12pm-8pm (pool club and restaurant), 9pm-6am (dinner, show and nightclub) Tel. (+34) 696 690 002 info@kahmarbella.com / www.kahmarbella.com HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Puente Romano has launched a new Italian poolside restaurant – Pizza Romano. There is outside dining where you can sit and enjoy al fresco dining under a fine mist spray of cool water surrounded by palm trees next to the hotel’s main pool, as well as inside dining in a contemporary Italian-style restaurant. This lunchtime venue is open until 5pm and serves a traditional Italian menu offering a wide selection of pizzas and pastas, including authentic dishes such as vitello tonnato and linguine vongole. We ordered a tomato salad, pizza and entrecôte steak which was all wonderfully delicious, well-cooked, full of flavour and with ample portion sizes. Pizza Romano is a place for the whole family - with a kids’ menu featuring typical Italian dishes that will suit everyone’s tastes such as Mini Milanese and Pizza Prosciutto. One other especially interesting feature of Pizza Romano is their show-cooking, allowing the waiters to proudly display their culinary skills – a freshly-made Caesar salad is one of their specialities. Discover the true taste of Italy and visit this charming trattoria surrounded by palm trees in a poolside setting where you can enjoy a wine and relax amidst the luxurious ambience of Puente Romano in Marbella. The prices are extremely reasonable and the ambience is casual and upbeat, so it is ideal for an easy lunch with friends or family. Open every day from 1pm to 5pm. For reservations Tel. SALDUNA CATERING

Modern Gastronomy That is Full of Flavour Home & Lifestyle Magazine were invited to Purobeach for a lunch with public relations manager Saray Rojas to find out more about this forward-thinking hospitality group.

Salduna Catering has been established for many years, offering a wide range of services within the world of events, including organisation and planning, gastronomy, serving, decoration, transport, nanny services, entertainment and much more. Salduna Catering is a sister company of the popular beach hotspots of Purobeach and Salduna Beach, which regularly host top events, although Salduna Catering has worked on events all over Spain and abroad from private homes and yachts to commercial venues. As Saray comments, “We can offer any style of gastronomy and take you around the world with authentic international flavours including Mediterranean, Indian, Japanese, Argentinean and Kosher cuisine, thanks to our native-born chefs. We are one of the few companies on the Coast that has a Kosher certificate signed by a rabbi!”.

There are several catering companies on the Costa del Sol but Salduna has a more contemporary style that concentrates not only on unique presentation, but also on its flavours. The food is cooked by chefs who are experts in their field, offering their culinary experience in all aspects of gastronomy from the original concept to execution. Saray adds, “We pride ourselves on our attention to detail. We know that it is not just about what happens in the kitchen that matters, but also how it arrives at the table, which is why we only employ experienced waiting staff who genuinely care about their customers and will attend to their every need so that the diner can relax and enjoy the event.” Tel. WINE NOTES

Commitment to Cádiz By Andrew J Linn

If you have spent any time with winemakers, whether socially or commercially, you will have to admit they are different from other people. What occupies their waking hours, and probably dreaming hours as well, is the passionate desire to make a better wine than anyone else. Of course we can rule out the mega-producers for whom wine is a commodity to be sold in as great a volume as possible; and, providing its value equates roughly to its sale price, both supplier and customer are happy. But fortunately there are enough artisan winemakers to fill a couple of Armadas, and enough large companies (Torres springs to mind) that have the same passion for selling a superior product at as fair a price as any craft winemaker. In some cases the passion may be misplaced. What do you do when a winemaker proudly opens a bottle of his star product and proceeds to dispense it as if it were liquid gold – but it tastes awful? You were really looking forward to something better, and as the hopeful progenitor watches your face for signs of delirious pleasure, how do you hide the twinge of disappointment? Any wine lover will have a standard vocabulary for such occasions, ranging from the safe “Mmmmm… very interesting”, to the riskier, “Er, not quite what I anticipated”, or the downright wicked, “Wow, that’s a knockout! I am not surprised it’s so hard to find…” So when you make that decision to set up a winery, you don’t actually have to worry too much about it being overly hands-on. There is always a plentiful selection of very good oenologists available for hire, part-time if you cannot afford full-time, and before you make your final selection you can easily check out the wines they made at the bodegas they previously worked for, and even read the critics’ views of their creations on the internet. You do of course have to fund the entire operation, which, as Richard Golding found out, can be an act of the utmost faith. As a marketing professional with many years’ experience working for multinational companies in the UK, Richard succumbed to the charms of the Sierras de Grazalema in Cádiz province, and from the start he believed this was the place where world-beating wines could be made. Probably a rather silly idea to most people back then, but nearly two decades later the evaluation can be shown to have been a prophecy. Richard and his daughter Natalia had luck on their side. The province of Cádiz - once famous exclusively for its white wines made from the Palomino grape, of which nearly

all went, and indeed still go, to the centuries-old sherry houses in Jerez de la Frontera - now boasts some of the most forward-looking bodegas in Spain. From nil wineries making red table wine a few years ago, there are now around 30, and the first thing you have to do is forget those old fogeys Messrs Rioja and Ribera del Duero. The new Cádiz wines are in a class of their own, and anyone who loves to experiment and has not yet tried any of these fascinating reds, whites and even a few rosados, should catch up fast. The rapidly-growing list includes names like Gibalbín, Forlong, Cobijado, Quadis, Ibargüen, Maurer, Etú, Sancha Pérez, Cía Vinos del Atlántico, Vinifícate, Taberner, González Palacios, Luis Pérez, Ramiro Ibañez, Miguel Domecq and Taramilla, most of them regrettably not making enough wine to satisfy the demand, and selling everything they produce in a matter of months. Tesalia and Arx, the two wines made by the Goldings at their bodega near Arcos de La Frontera, may be among the best examples of this new wave. Master winemaker Ignacio de Miguel and professor José Ramón Lissarrague have collaborated with Dutch master of wine Cees van Casteren, using grape varieties Petit Verdot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and the classical local grape, Tintilla de Rota, all hand-harvested at night. For the flagship wine, Tesalia, 6,000 bottles have to be enough to satisfy demand for the 2015 vintage, and it costs around €30. The second wine, Arx (2016), is a straight blend of Petit Verdot and Tintilla, and sells for around €19. Both wines are available direct from the winery (www.bodegatesalia.com) or from www.licorescorredera.es.

I Think I’m Going Gluten-Free? By Rachel Garrod

One of my latest rants concerns gluten intolerance. I’m not a dietician, but a physiotherapist, but I do take an interest in nutritional research and I find the rise in gluten intolerance remarkable – to say the least! Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley - it’s what gives bread its elasticity and lovely chewy texture. But lately, it seems, everyone is gluten intolerant. Do they need to be? Is it healthier? A recent study, published in the journal Digestion found that 86 per cent of individuals who believed they were gluten sensitive could tolerate it. Yes, there are certain diseases where gluten must be avoided. People with celiac disease, a hereditary auto-immune condition that affects about one per cent of the population, and those with extremely rare wheat allergies for instance. But what about people without those problems? In the study researchers from Italy enrolled 392 people, all of whom believed they were gluten intolerant. The subjects were instructed to eat gluten-free foods for two months and a series of medical tests were performed (blood tests, endoscopies and others). They then ate foods with gluten in it - bread, etc. - for six months and were monitored for symptoms associated with gluten intolerance. The results

showed that of the 392 people 6.63 per cent had celiac disease and two individuals had wheat allergy – so they needed to avoid gluten - but the large majority, a whopping 86 per cent, had no problems associated with gluten. So had they been suckered by the hype? Perhaps. What is worrying though, about all the bogus nutritional advice we are fed (see the pun!), is that it can have real health consequences if you already have an underlying disease. For example, on one site for diabetes, strong advice is given to avoid gluten products. This is simply not true. Research from Harvard University showed that those who consumed fewer gluten products, in particular whole grain and cereal, were in fact more likely to have type 2 diabetes than those who ate food with it in. As the researchers noted: “Gluten-free foods often have less dietary fibre and other micronutrients, making them less nutritious, and they also tend to cost more.” So, why pay more for something that is inherently less healthy and may in fact cause further problems down the line? Alzheimer’s Hope… and Illness Detection Medical Minutes by John Schieszer

ASPIRIN USE MAY PROTECT AGAINST ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE An aspirin a day may help keep Alzheimer’s away. A regimen of low-dose aspirin potentially may reduce plaques in the brain, which will reduce Alzheimer’s disease risk and protect memory, according to researchers at Rush University Medical Center in the United States. They have just published a study in the Journal of Neuroscience suggesting that regular aspirin use may have significant brain benefits. “The results of our study identify a possible new role for one of the most widely used, common, over-the-counter medications in the world,” said study senior author Kalipada Pahan, PhD, who is a professor of neurological sciences, biochemistry and pharmacology at Rush Medical College in Chicago. Alzheimer’s disease affects up to one in 10 Americans aged 65 or older. To date, the FDA has approved very few treatments of Alzheimer’s disease-related dementia and the medications that exist only provide limited symptomatic relief. The exact cause of Alzheimer’s disease progression is unknown. However, poor disposal of the toxic protein amyloid beta in the brain is a leading mechanism in dementia and memory loss. Activating the cellular machinery responsible for removing waste from the brain has emerged as a promising strategy for slowing Alzheimer’s disease. Amyloid beta forms clumps called amyloid plaques, which harm connections between nerve cells and are one of the major signs of Alzheimer’s disease. Pahan and his colleagues were able to show that aspirin decreases amyloid plaque formation in mice by stimulating lysosomes, which are components that help clear cellular debris. “Understanding how plaques are cleared is important to developing effective drugs that stop the progression of Alzheimer’s disease,” said Pahan. A protein called TFEB is considered the master regulator of waste removal. The researchers gave aspirin orally for a month to genetically modified mice with Alzheimer’s pathology, then evaluated the amount of amyloid plaque in the parts of the brain affected most by Alzheimer’s disease. They found that the aspirin medications augmented TFEB, stimulated lysosomes and decreased amyloid plaque pathology in the mice.

“This research study adds another potential benefit to aspirin’s already established uses for pain relief and for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases,” said Pahan. “More research needs to be completed, but the findings of our study have major potential implications for the therapeutic use of aspirin in Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia-related illnesses.”

SWALLOWED SENSOR CAN TELL IF YOU ARE SICK Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have created an ingestible sensor to non-invasively monitor indicators of disease in the stomach and intestines. The capsule carries genetically engineered bacteria that sense specific substances in the gut. The other components built into the one-and-a-half-inch capsule include phototransistors, a custom-integrated circuit, a small battery and a radio transmitter. This is the first demonstration of the technology, and it uses bacteria that were genetically engineered to sense blood in the gut. If there is blood present, the bacteria will glow. The phototransistor detects the glow, triggering the radio transmitter to send a signal to a computer or smartphone, reporting that blood has been detected. The test was done in pigs, which were first fed a dilute solution containing traces of blood. The sensor successfully sensed and reported by radio signal that there was blood in the stomach of the pig. “This first test for sensing bleeding from an ulcer shows the potential for this type of device to be used to avoid invasive procedures, such as endoscopy,” said senor author Dr. Timothy K. Lu, who is an associate professor of biological engineering and electrical engineering and computer science at MIT. “Following ingestion of the capsule, physicians would know within minutes if there was bleeding and could initiate treatment.” One goal of the research for this American team is to reduce the size of the device, so it is easier to swallow. In addition, the research team is expanding this platform to use bacteria that have been genetically engineered to sense a sulphur compound, an indicator of Crohn’s disease. The researchers also are investigating a molecule called AHL, which would indicate the presence of gastrointestinal infections.

Exploration of Luxury Personal Air Mobility

Aston Martin has initiated a “race to the skies” to revolutionise urban and inter-city travel. Produced in partnership with Cranfield University, Cranfield Aerospace Solutions and Rolls-Royce, the Volante Vision Concept aircraft will be equipped with vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capabilities. Providing room for three adults, the concept is a near-future study that previews a flying autonomous hybrid-electric vehicle for personal transportation, providing fast, efficient and congestion-free luxurious travel and taking advantage of latest advances in aerospace, electrification and autonomous technologies, coupled with Aston Martin’s signature design. It unites leading aerospace experts, propulsion specialists and designers. Announcing the project this summer, Aston Martin president and CEO Dr Andy Palmer said, “With the population in urban areas continuing to grow, congestion in towns and cities will become increasingly demanding. We need to look at alternative solutions to reduce congestion, cut pollution and im-

prove mobility. Air travel will be a crucial part in the future of transportation; the Volante Vision Concept is the ultimate luxury mobility solution. “Humans have always spent, on average, one hour commuting to and from work. The distance we live from our workplace has been determined by the methods of transportation available. The Volante Vision Concept will enable us to travel further with our hourly commute, meaning we are able to live further away from where we work. Cities will grow, and towns that are today too far away from cities to be commutable will become suburban. “With Aston Martin and our ‘dream team’ of British innovation across industry and academia, we are positioned to change the future of transportation, giving our customers a new dimension of freedom.” Added Iain Gray, director of Aerospace at Cranfield University, “We’re delighted to be part of this exciting and forward-thinking project that showcases British innovation and the way that Cranfield works with and supports busi-

ness. The Volante Vision Concept exemplifies Cranfield’s unique capabilities in digital aviation, autonomous systems and the electrification of aerospace, and is an excellent example of how the university combines cutting-edge research, academic rigour and real-world application.” According to Cranfield Aerospace Solutions (CAeS) CEO Paul Hutton, “The introduction of autonomous and electric propulsion technologies into new aircraft designs is both inevitable and challenging, and as the UK’s leading aircraft design and production SME we are excited to be playing this key role in the Volante Vision Concept and so to be at the vanguard of this revolution in aerospace.” For Rolls-Royce, director (electrical) Rob Watson observed, “We are delighted to be involved in the Volante Vision Concept, which showcases the best of British design and engineering. Rolls-Royce has already delivered hybridelectric systems for other applications including ships and trains, and we’re

very excited about the potential of the technology in aerospace. This is a great opportunity to collaborate on a pioneering project which will use high-performance hybrid-electric propulsion technologies for personal air mobility concepts that could transform the future of transportation.” Holding the key to the distinctive design language of the new Aston Martins is Aston Martin EVP and chief creative officer Marek Reichman - designer of cars such as the Aston Martin DB11, new Vantage, DBS Superleggera and Aston Martin Valkyrie hypercar project. Referring to this new air travel concept, he said, “We are at the beginning of a new generation of urban transportation; vertical mobility is no longer a fantasy. We have a unique chance to create a luxury concept aircraft that will represent the ultimate fusion of art and technology. We have used forms and proportions that express the same devotion to design, engineering and beauty that shape our cars.” HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

ART & CULTURE

A Mediterranean Meeting Point FOR URBAN LANDSCAPES

Stoa Gallery took part in the annual Scope Basel art fair for a second consecutive year. Curated by Conchi Alvarez, the Estepona gallery’s project was based on two painters the gallery represents: Frenchwoman Julie Alegre and Spain’s Conchi Alvarez. The idea behind their project was based on an interpretation of the urban landscape and the Mediterranean as its meeting point… “a sea which has developed around a sense of life that only occurs on its shores, and that has had, precisely in cities, a passionate boisterous world, a common space, meeting cultures, which have been superimposed and have coexisted in harmony and mutual cultural enrichment. “All paintings belong to the figurative sphere and in all of them it is a city with-

out people. Streets and corners of cities in southern Spain in acrylics on the panels of Conchi, and panoramic medinas of the M´Zab of Algeria in the inks on paper of Julie. For these two creators, the city is the scenario of dreams and daydreams, desires and lived experiences, and the common denominator is bright, powerful and saturated colour, seeming to want to transmit enthusiasm to the most skeptical, proposing to dream, or daydream, with an ideal city, more friendly, polite, full of life… but in these landscapes, their past, the lived experiences, project their particular idiosyncrasy and a landscaping that encloses much more the appreciation of a simple look.” www.stoagallery.com

Visual Exploration OF SIMULATED LIVING Copenhagen-based collective Sara Galbiati, Peter Eriksen and Tobias Markussen won the 2018 BJP International Photography Award with their series The Merge. The winning entry in this 14th edition of the annual British Journal of Photography competition is described as “an in-depth investigation into artificial intelligence and robotics, which aims to explore and visually interpret the possibility that we are living inside a simulation. Could our world be a constructed illusion?” Announcing the winners, the organisers said, “For thousands of years, our perception of reality has been questioned, and the discussion has garnered new interest with the development of technology. In 2003, Oxford University philosopher Nick Bostrom published ‘The Simulation Argument’, asking whether life on earth could actually be taking place inside a computer simulation, and academics and tech experts came out in droves to support Bostrom’s theory. “Tesla founder Elon Musk has reasoned that the exponential haste with which artificial intelligence is developing proves that we could actually be inside somebody else’s simulation, as AI is rapidly becoming indistinguishable from our own reality.” BJP described The Merge as “a seminal work that visually entertains this theory, artistically investigating the consequences that supercomputers, artificial intelligence and robots may have on our society. By looking at interactions between man and machine, the project explores how the accelerated digitised paradigm will affect our emotional, social and moral norms, and could prove our place within someone else’s simulation. “The project balances realism and imagination, leaving space for the viewer to engage with its dialogue and reconsider their own perception of reality.”

Sand Castles in Spain… AND THE SALT SERIES

Winners of the DJI Drone Photography Award, Markel Redondo and Tom Hegen have presented diverse new bodies of work at ThePrintsSpace gallery. Sand Castles (part II) provides a perspective on Spain’s 3.4 million abandoned houses; while The Salt Series documents salt production across Europe. In early 2018, Redondo spent 15 days driving across southern Spain, where he photographed 12 different developments. “An estimated 3.4 million houses stand empty and deserted. Built in a dizzying rush by developers to exploit cheap loans and favourable government regulations, these modern ruins now litter the landscape. There is an apocalyptic feel to the developments; it is as if you are the last inhabitant in the world.” Redondo first photographed these abandoned developments in 2010. Eight years later, and now equipped with a DJI Phantom 4 Pro drone, he retraced his footsteps, returning to the same sites and also visiting new ones. “Spain was one of the countries hardest hit by the European economic crisis. Due to a toxic combination of billions of euros worth of bad loans held by Spanish banks, and a real estate bubble that burst in spectacular style in 2007, Spain’s economy now faces multiple challenges. Sand Castles (part II) aims to highlight this problem from a new perspective. We live in a society with huge

housing issues, where many cannot afford a place to live, yet Spain has more than three million empty homes,” observed Redondo. The Salt Series was captured with the DJI Phantom 4 Pro camera pointing directly downwards. “The contrast and geometric shapes of the salt ponds remind me of abstract paintings,” said Hegan. “Our need to arrange everything geometrically in order to regulate and have control makes us all, in a sense, designers of our own environment.” Using a drone, Hegen was able to fly above some of Europe’s largest salt production sites and reveal their intricate process. The artificially-created ponds, shown in The Salt Series, are one of the core elements of sea salt production. “The production of sea salt is one of the oldest forms of human intervention in natural spaces but we rarely ask where it actually comes from and how it is being produced.” Photos: Centre: The Salt Series by Tom Hegen (www.bjp-online.com/2018/03/ dji-drone-photography-award-the-salt-series/) Top: Sand Castles (part II) by Markel Redondo (www.bjp-online. com/2018/03/dji-drone-photography-award-sand-castles-part-ii/) HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Barceló Málaga’s innovative “lobby art” has been honoured with a new award. Veredictas, organisers of the 18th edition of the Premios Letra – annual awards that recognise excellence in visual and graphic communication within decorative surroundings – presented the hotel with a best sign-writing silver award for its B-Lounge lobby design project. The project was created and developed by Narita Estudio as part of the hotel’s commitment to providing a cutting-edge cultural and leisure experience for guests through innovative design. The studio designed illustrations and texts in vinyl to give the hotel its “own universe, where urban culture and travelling romanticism come together to regale visitors with different tales”. Located in the María Zambrano railway station in Málaga’s city centre, the hotel welcomes clients with its state-of-the-art sign-writing, “transforming the BLounge into a special corner of the hotel that re-creates the imprint and history of the eternal traveller”. Barceló Málaga’s status as “a perfect example of an urban hotel” is highlighted by its existing close relationship with the world of art and culture, present in the hotel’s cutting-edge design that features classic touches of surreal art. The B-Lounge lobby area was designed by interior decorator Jordi Torres, who turned the traditional hotel image upside down with a bold concept full of natural, sparkling and vibrantly coloured surfaces including the hotel’s most daring feature: its EDHA (Estructura Deslizante para Humanos Atrevidos – Sliding Structure for Adventurous People), a spectacular six-metre toboggan linking the first floor with the lobby. Meanwhile, Barceló Málaga’s B-Heaven became one of the city’s ”it rooftops” this summer. The new terrace was officially inaugurated in May and soon established itself as a popular venue for both locals and visitors keen to discover the “trendiest” hotspots in Málaga. Earlier this year named by Hoteles.com as one of the world’s “most-Instagrammed” hotels, Barceló Málaga revamped its terrace area to take advantage of the city’s sunny climate, cool surroundings and stunning views of the Málaga skyline – for both holidaymakers and “bleisure” travellers. It includes a modern pool – heated during the winter months – and a spacious area with lounge-style tables and chairs, where clients can relax during the day and enjoy a candlelit dinner during the evening. The menu is a fusion of latest culinary trends and typical Andalucian tastes and flavours, including two signature hamburgers: the Andalucian with brioche, beef and payoyo cheese; and the Sriracha, which combines seasoned beef and a lightly spicy yoghurt sauce with a Málaga muffin (mollete). These are accompanied by a varied menu of smoothies, cocktails and wines. Barceló Hotels & Resorts Centro Comercial Vialia Calle Héroe de Sostoa, 2, Málaga Tel. RESIDENCIAS LUJOSAS VITALUX

TEN YEARS OF DEDICATION AND SUCCESS It is sometimes said that modesty is an ornament. For Doris Kavcic, owner of real estate company “Residencias Lujosas Vitalux, S.L.”, however, that also raises the question: do you get further in life without it? This is the 10th year of “Vitalux” and she admits quite freely, “It fills me with joy and pride!” Doris recalls that 2009 was a year “when hardly anyone in Spain dared to start a new business”, so Vitalux’s success was greatly due to her single-mindedness. Today, the company is firmly established with a wide range of properties located between Málaga city and Estepona’s surroundings, “from small residential gems to the most luxurious mansions”. Vitalux offers constantly updated offers for new developments, regular advertising in local magazines and newspapers, and an international network. Owners say they are thrilled with the dedication that Vitalux shows in advertising its real estate portfolio, and success has not been far behind, with annual turnover increasing right from the company’s beginnings. LIBERTY SEGUROS

HOME MORTGAGES FOR PEACE OF MIND Taking out a home policy is not mandatory except when the house is mortgaged. According to Liberty Seguros, “That is the only situation that requires a person to have a policy that protects their home in Spain. However, it is worth saying that, although it is not mandatory, it is advisable and necessary to be prepared for any eventuality. Our home is our most precious asset and if we want to avoid surprises and unforeseen events, it is important to get an insurance that gives us the peace of mind knowing that whatever happens in our home there will be someone who is responsible for solving it. “The first thing you should know is that you do not have to contract your home insurance with the entity that is granting you the mortgage but you can compare prices in the market and hire the product that provides the coverage that best suits your needs. “Until a couple of years ago, banking entities could condition their mortgage lending with an ‘obligation’ to contract some linked products, such as the home insurance. But now, with the approval by the European Parliament of the Mortgage Credit Directive, banks are prohibited by law from linking a mortgage to the purchase of insurance. Your insurance company might include a clause in your policy registering your lending bank as mortgage beneficiary, to cope with the request of the bank.” Liberty Seguros has an extensive network of over 300 brokers and agents, not only for home insurance but also for car, life, pet, business, commercial, leisure, public liability and personal injury. Costa Women have released the second in a series of free ebooks sharing stories and advice from members who have followed their dream and moved to Spain. “Spain & Me” has been compiled and edited by Ali Meehan, founder of Costa Women, with chapters written by other members. Speaking about her reasons for creating the book, Ali said, “Possibly the most asked and answered question between foreigners is, ‘What is life really like if you live in Spain?’ And because changing countries is no small matter, the answers are often the most amazing and well rehearsed, many worthy of a book, or film alone. Having read over 7,000 of these answers on the Costa Women profiles and met so many in person, I realise that the time of moving here can be planned or accidental, life defining, traumatic (at times) and definitely unforgettable.” Topics in the 14 chapters cover topics such as starting a business, the life of a digital nomad, living off-grid, giving birth in Spain and coping with death of a family member. HOME & LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE CELEBRATES ITS TENTH ANNIVERSARY! In 2008, Home & Lifestyle Magazine was launched by Tanya Francis, who had a strong background in publishing and a love for home decoration. Two years later, Tanya decided to move on to pastures new and Sally Cullens, with her wealth of experience within the publishing world and a passion for interior design, took over the reins. Over the years, Home & Lifestyle Magazine has expanded the pagination to incorporate more information on latest trends in contemporary design, specifically showcasing international brands that local companies retail here on the Coast. Home & Lifestyle Magazine has visited all the major European design exhibitions, meeting important executives from leading designer brands to ensure that the magazine is seen as a key publication within the international design world receiving the latest press images for inclusion within our décor pages. With the recent upturn in the economy, Home & Lifestyle Magazine has had the opportunity of interviewing many of the movers and shakers within the world of design and real estate here on the Coast, helping readers keep abreast of what is happening on the business side of these growing sectors. The lifestyle section of the magazine has also been consolidated, highlighting key aspects of life on the Costa del Sol and featuring gastronomy, art and culture, health and well-being, designer hotel getaways, motoring and local business news. Now in our 10th year, with the upcoming edition being the 60th, we would like to thank all our collaborators, friends and family of associates for the great support they have given us over the years. This exemption will not be applicable, among other assumptions, when the sale is made in favour of the spouse or a family relative up to the second degree, which includes children, siblings and grandparents.
