Editorial As a marketing ploy, Pantone’s annual announcement of its “colour of the year” is a master stroke. It invariably receives extensive coverage - indeed, a veritable media barrage - by both specialist and general news outlets and blogs; brands and suppliers rush to announce the availability of their own Pantone-inspired products; and industry pundits debate the aesthetic, metaphysical and cosmic attributes of the chosen hue. Not all coverage is favourable, of course. One commentator writing on the Dezeen portal, protested, “Pantone has determined that its colour of the year for 2019 is Living Coral, a sort of pinky peachy Instagram sunset sort of colour apparently based on the natural pigmentation of healthy ocean coral. This seems an unfortunate symbolism, as headlines rage about climate change and the associated destruction of reefs worldwide.” Hard to disagree with those sentiments, although at Home & Lifestyle we will stoically maintain our customary objective stance on the issue. So here is what Pantone themselves have to say about Living Coral... An animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energises and enlivens with a softer edge… Vibrant, yet mellow Pantone 16-1546 Living Coral embraces us with warmth and nourishment to provide comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment. In reaction to the onslaught of digital technology and social media increasingly embedding into daily life, we are seeking authentic and immersive experiences that enable connection and intimacy. Sociable and spirited, the engaging nature of Living Coral welcomes and encourages lighthearted activity. Symbolising our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits, Living Coral embodies our desire for playful expression. Representing the fusion of modern life, Living Coral is a nurturing colour that appears in our natural surroundings and, at the same time, displays a lively presence within social media.” And in conclusion… “Living Coral emits the desired, familiar and energising aspects of colour found in nature. In its glorious, yet unfortunately more elusive, display beneath the sea, this vivifying and effervescent colour mesmerises the eye and mind. Lying at the centre of our naturally vivid and chromatic ecosystem, Living Coral is evocative of how coral reefs provide shelter to a diverse kaleidoscope of colour.” While on the subject of colour trends, Shutterstock have also contributed their own annual “discovery of the world’s most popular colours”. According to the international image bank, UFO Green, Plastic Pink and Proton Purple are “a neon trio of turbo-charged colours that perfectly capture the tech-crazy world… If we look to the ideas influencing culture today, technology stands at the forefront. There’s an excited energy driving this movement, so it’s no wonder that 2019’s colour trends pack a digital punch.” So there you go… All the best from all of us at Home & Lifestyle Magazine for the New Year - and enjoy your colour-coordinating in 2019.

during the cooler months
The winter months are when your living room usually gets the most attention. It is the area where you entertain guests, relax with family or kickback alone on your favourite sofa with a good book or boxset when the weather is not pleasant enough to enjoy outside. We have lately observed the growing trend in sofas and chairs for sumptuous velvets offering richness and warmth with a spot of opulence, and this looks like it is not going to go away anytime soon. If velvet is not your penchant, do not fear‌ there are obviously plenty of other options. Here we look into what is hot in the latest collections you can buy on the Coast‌

Ligne Roset’s Harry armchair was designed by Eric Jourdan and was named in tribute to, ‘’England, where the most flamboyant of modernity and tradition meet (bowler hat and dreadlocks)’’. Thin legs make the chair appear like it is floating, and it was built for ultimate comfort taking into consideration the inclination and height of the seat and back (www.ligne-roset.com).

Wallpaper trends have been leaning noticeably towards bold prints such as portraits, animal depictions, geometric and botanical designs. Vibrant prints are ideal for wallpapering a single wall, serving as an artistic statement. As the world of paint continues to offer boundless shades of colours, walls can now be painted in shades that we never thought were possible. Be daring with your living room walls and opt for Farrow & Ball’s “Green Smoke” or “India Yellow” colour palettes, complimented with their “Wimborne White” for contrast. The sultry green and yellow mix gives the room a rich and warm ambience, while the white adds a pop of freshness. Farrow & Ball is available from Tela Bella near Pol. Ind. We all know that our bedrooms should be uncluttered for a peaceful state of mind whilst resting. A comfortable bed with good quality bed linen to allow your skin to breathe plus a good mattress are well worth the investment for a superlative night’s sleep. Natural materials are always recommended, while good window solutions to block out sunlight for an undisturbed sleep and appropriate lighting are just some of the many other elements to consider for your bedroom. Here are some ideas for inspiration now that the winter months are upon us and our bedrooms become more of a focus…

Jensen always state that back support together with a soft shoulder area gives the best night’s sleep because the human anatomy usually has broader hips and shoulders, while they are heavier and narrower around their waist. The mattress
must accommodate the whole body’s needs, thus offering adequate support in the key areas. With this in mind, Jensen offer variable tension springs from medium to extra firm, which can be determined by the person’s height, weight and desired
level of comfort. The Jensen’s Exact Comfort Adjustment gives you the ability to control the specifications of your mattress at the touch of a button. To find out more, visit Jensen Store in Pol. Ind. Nueva Campana (www.jensenstore.com).

OUTDOOR Life Living in southern Europe we are lucky enough to be able to use our outdoor furniture all year round as summer blurs into winter much less dramatically than in northern Europe. Living on the southern coast of Spain and Gibraltar, investing in furniture items for your terrace or garden is money well-spent, as in reality they are not just showcased in the summer months. Wood is making a comeback with outdoor furniture as the trend for natural materials rallies on, blending appropriately into the natural surroundings of the outdoor environment. The new Sutra range by Ego Paris combines wood with aluminium, playing with light and shadows to give this exquisite outdoor furniture collection its special appeal. Gardening
USEFUL TIPS
For Your Garden GROW YOUR OWN As healthy eating has become more than ever a focus in our lives, the trend for growing our own herbs, fruit and vegetables has never been so popular. Growing our own produce gives us peace of mind as we know exactly what is going into our bodies, plus we have the satisfaction of nurturing the food that we are eating. EASY MAINTENANCE IDEAS Leading the busy lives that we do, you can take the stress out of managing an unruly garden by following the motto, “less is more”. Simplicity is key so go for perennial plants that are hardier and, therefore, longer-lasting and it is always a good idea to group plants together that require the same amount of water for easier maintenance. Consider taking out troublesome trees and plants that drop their leaves or creep into areas where they are not wanted; while purchasing an irrigation system allows you to relax in the knowledge that, while you are away, your plants are being looked after. www.vondom.com
MAKE FOCAL POINTS Turn a plain wall into a feature with a beautiful climber, wall sconce or statue to add more interest to your garden area. A water feature is always a nice touch to add another natural element to the garden’s Zen, and the sound of trickling water can be very soothing. MAKE YOUR OWN LITTLE OASIS As “staying in is the new going out”, why not make a special area in your garden that is tailor-made just for you? Consider a pergola or shade sail with comfortable furniture and accessories such as a pouf or hammock. Outdoor lights are a great way to elegantly highlight your natural vegetation in the evenings, and installing a patio heater or firepit really sets the mood. To create a true private oasis, plant tall plants to serve as a privacy screen or build a small wall to create a fixed and defined area. GO DESIGNER Splash-out on a designer plant pot to showcase your plants and, if it is in your front garden, this will give your home extra curb appeal. Large tropical plants and trees add an exotic aesthetic and a tasteful statue makes an elegant artistic statement. Hanging plants cascading down add a sense of drama, like glamorous chandeliers. HARDSCAPING Adding pathways gives an organised overall aesthetic to a garden. Save on gardening maintenance with a stone or tiled area which looks neat and tidy and is also ideal if you rent out your home. These days decking is highly durable, with composite materials becoming so advanced that they have exceptional resistance to weather conditions and general wear and tear - but still maintain the elegance of natural wood.

Bathroom Trends Updating your bathroom does not mean that you have to embark on a complete refit‌ it can sometimes only require a few tweaks such as updating your taps, a new sink or a state-of-the-art toilet. Lighting is always something to seriously consider, as it can turn a sterile-looking bathroom into a luxurious spa, especially if you push the boat out with a glamorous lamp or chandelier. Your bathroom should not be just a functional space but also a place where you want to spend time, revitalise and relax‌ making it your ideal personal sanctuary. 112 JANUARY & FEBRUARY 2019

Construction News & Trends
THE MODERN EDGE
WHY CONTEMPORARY HOMES ARE TRENDING Article supplied by Atlas Group
As cranes continue to populate the horizon and the property market flourishes, you might have noticed a growing trend for contemporary builds and the use of natural materials. A blend of clean lines, shapes and various types of finishes, which from a distance look like gleaming clouds floating above the hills. There is a conscious movement here on the Costa del Sol towards contemporary builds; a new generation of style has arrived. Homeowners today want pristine architecture, quality materials and cutting-edge technology. Large open spaces to blend the interior and exterior, high ceilings, large glass windows to let in the light and surrounding environment‌ Latest technology such as home automation systems to make life extremely simple for the home owner is also highly desired. As are breathtaking infinity pools perched over the cliff tops and smart gardens with efficient energy and water use.
Fuelled by some of the exceptional architects based in the area, and taking into consideration the tastes and needs of international clientele, this modern architectural trend is not going anywhere soon. Villas on the market may look similar to the untrained eye but it is important to recognise the difference from one to the other. Clients should take the time to ensure that the architect and the company undertaking the construction adhere to current legislation, technical codes and the highest standards and practices, so that their dream homes will withstand the test of time. Wondering why contemporary homes are taking over the Coast? Mike Gregory, General Director of Atlas Group, explains the benefits of building from new‌

PAVING THE WAY IN NEW BUILD QUALITY “Clients seeking a modern or new home would generally expect a better quality of living. Comfortable and healthy living spaces, built using the latest innovations, high-quality materials and the latest methods in construction. The quality and choice of materials is crucial, especially in Andalucía with the aggressive climate conditions; the hot summers, the salty ocean. Not only is the quality of materials chosen important, it is also vital to choose a construction company with the right qualities; skilled and trustworthy workers to undertake your project.”
YOUR TURN-KEY HOME “Most people have dreams of their ideal home, built from the ground up to their specifications and a key placed in their hand upon completion. The demand for turn-key homes fuels the majority of the projects and construction. Clients are able to move straight in, literally only bringing their personal items, in a home ready-made.”
WORKS OF ART “A good-quality modern build should be considered a work of art. Precisely and painstakingly designed by architects to realise their clients’ dreams, many of these bespoke homes are built to exacting standards and take into account the necessities of the client’s lifestyle. These homes are designed to be appreciated, enjoyed and lived in, and many win awards for their innovation, design and execution”. Exceptional design and build qualities will always stand the test of time. Atlas Group CC Atenea, Estepona (+34) 951 272 140 / www.atlas-group.es

ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS ECLECTIC DIVERSITY AMONG GLOBAL ENTRIES
Showcasing both historical and contemporary buildings, 20 shortlisted photographs in The Architectural Photography Awards were exhibited at the World Architecture Festival (WAF) in Amsterdam in November Held as “an annual celebration of the best architectural photography”, the 2018 awards attracted entries from 47 countries, with five finalists shortlisted in each of the four customary categories of “Exteriors”, “Interiors”, “Sense of Place” and “Buildings in Use”. The finalists included entrants from India, China, Australia, US, Canada and the UK. Unusually, according to the organisers, two entries featured the same building – The Hive, designed by Wolfgang Buttress. Omer Kanipak’s image of children peering in was shortlisted in the “Buildings in Use” category and Jeff Eden’s picturesque photo of The Hive in the snow was shortlisted in “Sense of Place”. The widely eclectic entries varied from historic buildings such as the Piazza Duomo in Milan, captured by Marco Tagliarino of Italy from the neighbouring Museo del 900, to images of new buildings such as Foster + Partners’ Bloomberg headquarters. For the latter, James Newton’s photograph of the timber-clad “Vortex” lobby was shortlisted in the “Interior” category. Images of dereliction and abandonment were described as being particularly poignant. “In Ryan Koopmans’s photograph of a Soviet-era Sanatorium in the town of Tskaltubo (Georgia) the abandoned building had been turned into
a rubbish dump, with a stray dog the only sign of life. Roman Robroek’s photograph of a semi-abandoned power station in Kelenfold (Budapest) was a sharp contrast, with the deserted control room still pristine with its magnificent glass ceiling intact.” Most of the shortlisted images were devoid of inhabitants, but a few combined architectural themes with human interest. Zhu Wenqiao’s image, shortlisted in the “Sense of Place” category, contrasted swimmers on the riverside in Chongqing (China) with the construction in the background of the high-rise Raffles City by Safdie Architects. Two of the photographs shortlisted in the “Buildings in Use” category depicted sporting activity – runners on an indoor track at Auburn University, in Alabama, photographed by Brad Feinknopf, and Aldo Amoretti’s image of athletes training at Azur Arena in Antibes (France). “Several highly abstract images including Sufaj Garg’s ceiling detail shot of Santiago Calatrava’s Liège-Guillemins station in Belgium contrast with views showing the buildings in the context of their location. These include the Seashore Chapel in Qinhuangdao (China) designed by Vector Architects and pictured by Ai Qing from afar.” www.worldarchitecturefestival.com / www.archphotoawards.com

KING OF COTTON
TIMELESS PURVEYORS OF EXQUISITE COTTON PRODUCTS Interview with Angelica Cameron - Manager
Photos by Julia Roder
KING OF COTTON CENTRO COMERCIAL LA COLONIA, SAN PEDRO DE ALCÁNTARA (MARBELLA) TEL. (+34) 951 127 116 ventas@kingofcotton.com www.kingofcotton.es
When was King of Cotton founded? King of Cotton’s history dates back more than a century, so we know a lot about cotton. Since 1995 we have been a trusted provider for some of the best hotels in the world, but more recently we have come to realise that every home should benefit from our wonderful range of high-quality products. What can we expect to find in your San Pedro de Alcántara showroom? We will be happy to introduce you to the highest quality Egyptian cotton products for your home. Egyptian cotton is famous for its extra long fibres, which can be used to create threads that are finer than other cottons. Because they are thinner, more yarns per square metre of material can be produced, thus creating a more luxurious fabric, which is stronger and lighter in weight, and allows your skin to breathe naturally, resulting in better quality sleep. Within these high levels of quality, we offer a wide range of products for both the bedroom and the bathroom. When purchasing bedlinen, what fabrics should we look for? As experts, and thanks to our extensive experience in the bedding sector for rest and wellbeing, we always recommend the exclusive use of 100 per cent cotton sheets to ensure more comfortable sleep. Can you tell us more about thread counts… With Egyptian cotton you can use different qualities, ranging from 200 threads per square metre to our highest quality, which would be 1,000 threads.
200 Thread: A very cool and light cotton percale, used mainly in summer. You can find it in many hotels, and this product is also ideal for domestic use or for business, where the requirement is for fresh and clean bedding within a certain budget. 300 Thread: You will find it in the world’s best hotels… classic luxury, soft to the touch, and in white or different colour collections. Pillow cases are available with grey or white cord. 400 and 500 Thread: Definitely our best-selling cotton product. A soft Egyptian cotton but more consistent than 200 threads. Favoured for its fresh feeling and durability, with widespread appeal. These products are what you would expect to find in the beds of the main hotel chains. 600 Thread: This is where exclusive quality begins, and it is possible thanks to the compressed air technology used in the weaving process. It is a beautiful fabric, lustrous, uniform and very smooth. The best-selling luxury cotton in our high-end range… 800 and 1000 Thread: The most luxurious - pure pleasure and one step above 600 threads, with an even greater brightness and a more complete fabric. This is a surprisingly sturdy but silky fabric and it will stay beautiful even as the years go by. In conclusion… If you would like more information or personalised advice, at our store in San Pedro de Alcántara you can check out the different qualities in our range and be attended by top experts who can advise you according to your needs. Without any doubt, your rest will have a “King of Cotton before and after”.

AALTO EXCLUSIVE DESIGN
CREATING SOPHISTICATED AND ORIGINAL INTERIORS Interview with Jana Novakova - Design Department Manager

We have noted a greater presence of AALTO Exclusive Design recently… Indeed… AALTO Exclusive Design is an international multi-brand interior design studio, cofounded by interior designer Jose Antonio Flores and luxury furniture manufacturer Francisco Leiva, that has grown to become a one-stop hub of design services, for both professional and private clients in Marbella and abroad. With the addition of international businessman Ness Yammine, as partner and chairman, AALTO has gained further exposure as an exclusive interior design studio, with its 800 square metre luxury showroom on the Golden Mile and its own furniture collection presented this year for the first time in Paris at the Maison & Objet fair. AALTO is expanding rapidly as a reliable international operator.
vestment on the Costa del Sol in the Estepona area and La Zagaleta. We have demonstrated our skills and adapted our know-how to two very different projects: a show flat in South Bay in Estepona and a large-scale show villa in La Zagaleta, teaming up with our client to create sophisticated and original interiors.
What are your latest projects? We have recently undertaken two bespoke projects on commission for our partners Aedas Homes international developers - as part of their major in-
Which design style have you chosen for these projects? For this project, Jose Antonio Flores’ approach to the design of the villa in La Zagaleta was com-
What were the clients’ key wishes? Their aim, beyond the standard “wow” effect was to create a homely yet sophisticated, accessible and elegant interior in order to seduce potential buyers. In our terms it meant giving character to the flat and house, creating unique atmospheres matching the existing architecture and finishes, where everything has to be balanced and thought through carefully.

pletely in “AALTO’s own characteristic style”, combining contemporary with ethnic touches and cool neutrals mixed with bold colour accents in warm shades for vibrant energy. Given that the house already had fitted carpentry in dark wood, we needed to create strong contrast to let the interior come together. For the show flat in South Bay we also approached it in a similar bespoke manner, adding art and specially made mirrors and wall panels to give it an individual touch. We always aim to create something that has not been seen before. Also, bearing in mind the setting of the Costa del Sol, we like to add a Marbella touch to the spaces we design, to introduce a bit of southern Spanish sunshine and flair in the form of extravagant accessories, patterns and colour combinations. Did you incorporate any bespoke furniture for this project? Of course,… While we used mostly high-end furnishing brands for upholstery, lighting and accessories, we opted for bespoke carpentry to cover all the high walls with made-to-measure panels to occupy and decorate the space. We have our own artisanal decorative carpentry plant in Málaga, which allows us to fully customise our design. Similarly, we have also created bespoke items such as headboards, a library with desk in the existing niche of the master bedroom, wall panelling around the chimney, wall décor in the dining area plus much more. What is the source of your inspiration? We obviously find our inspiration studying all design publications and trends, in social media and in life in general. But most importantly our clients’ wishes remain our main source of inspiration as we always aim to tailor-make our design concepts to their style, taste and budget. Client satisfaction is our main drive and objective.

The five-star Kempinski Hotel Bahía, situated near Laguna Village in Estepona, prides itself on its first-class facilities and outstanding beachside setting. However, it is not widely known that last year this magnificent hotel embarked on a dramatic reform, breathing new life into the lobby, bar and restaurants and transforming these areas into impressive contemporary spaces that give a nod to the hotel’s Mediterranean surroundings and its Middle Eastern neighbours across the waters. Home & Lifestyle Magazine was invited down to take a look around… The project, carried out by restaurateur Roy Zsidai, CEO of Zsidai Gastronomy Group, and Hungarian architect Ákos Bara, of the Bara Design Studio, was set out to create the gastronomic hub El Paseo del Mar. The architecture of the building itself and the rich heritage of the local area gave much inspiration to the designers. The plan of attack was to give each area its own identity whilst maintaining a theme so that the design does not get disjointed and flows gently through the building.
144 JANUARY & FEBRUARY 2019
On entering the hotel, you cannot fail to notice the impending chandelier, which is a recycled bottle washer creatively transformed into a showstopping lighting feature. The rich colours, traditional glazed ceramics and iconic buildings of the Moors were a great source of inspiration for Ákos, who applied these elements to the design. The columns and ceiling were painted a lavish blue to connect the room with the blue skies outside and, in contrast, the bright yellow velvet sofas give a pop of sunshine to the space, representing the sun and the sea of the Costa del Sol. To the left of the reception there is a concierge area which has a whimsical, almost Harry Potter, air about it as everything seems exaggerated - a towering bookcase next to an enormous desk with oversized circular pendant lamps looming above it like UFOs coming into land. When you look up, you notice a window at the very top letting natural sunlight pour in, which explains why Ákos chose the circular lamps to allow as much light to flow into the space as possible.
The geometric design of the Black Rose bar and lobby is an exotic-rustic take on a classic art-deco pattern and continues all the way to end above the grand terrace of the bar, creating striking shadows beneath and utilising the sun to showcase the architecture in its own way. When you descend down to the Baltazár Bar & Grill, which looks out over their tropical gardens, the main colour palate is green, connecting the restaurant with its natural surroundings with warm, jewel-like tiles being one of the main design features. The Baltazár is a classic brasseriestyle restaurant offering casual dining in a contemporary setting, with semi-circular banquette seating providing comfort and privacy and ideal for groups. Restaurateur Roy Zsidai decided to give the Baltazár its own brand emblem – an elephant. “I wanted to use the elephant to brand Baltazár,” he explains, “because it is a fantastic creature, the most social of the species, and it is considered to bring luck and good fortune in many cultures and myths. Since the restaurant is an unusual version of its kind, we wanted a special, supernatural elephant and here we are: elephant with wings.” Residents and tourists alike are welcome to visit the hotel and enjoy one of their exquisite cocktails in the Black Rose bar (we had the chance to sample some cocktails, and in our opinion they were the best we had ever had on the Coast). The Baltazár restaurant is also a fantastic venue where there is a wide choice on the menu to suit everyone’s tastes, with a large char-grilled section as well as sharing plates, salads, soups, fish dishes and delectable desserts. The restaurant has a buzzy atmosphere and we found the service to be excellent. Kempinski Hotel Bahía Carretera de Cádiz Km 159, 29680 Estepona. Tel. (+34) 952 809 500 www.kempinski.com/estepona

Kitch is a members social club situated in the Casa Rusia area between San Pedro de Alcántara and Puerto Banús, offering a luxurious venue with exquisite gastronomy and an extensive bar list. Home & Lifestyle Magazine was invited to Kitch by Marbella’s very own glamorous PR guru, Theresa Bernabe, to try some of the wonderful dishes that Kitch has to offer and also to attend a presentation that was being held that day for Riofrío’s new ecological caviar. Becoming a member at Kitch is simple… just go onto their website and register. They already have over 3,000 members, and once you have joined you receive premium seating reservations in the restaurant and at their events. The venue itself is jaw-droppingly grand with a large outside terrace surrounded by tropical vegetation and water features and an indoor restaurant and bar area adorned with huge paintings, luxurious chairs and sofas in a beautifully lit ambience under a high ceiling. We were treated to a tasting of Riofrío’s range of caviars, including their new ecological caviar, and were given insight into their individual qualities and flavours. Following the highly informative event, we were presented with
a menu that offers a wide variety of international dishes ranging from chateaubriand, sole with truffle mash potato in a beurre blanc sauce, lobster ravioli, glazed duck with noodles and mange tout to turbot with seafood risotto. There are also vegetarian options and a tapas menu on offer if you are not in the mood for a full meal. It is, however, worth saving yourself for their flaming crêpes Suzette with Grand Marnier which they prepare at the table - show-cooking style. There is no denying that Kitch is a highly sophisticated venue but it does not have a stuffy feel. Despite all its grandeur, you are made to feel welcome as the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. We felt the prices were fair as the dishes are creatively put together on the plate, using good-quality ingredients, and they offer generous portion sizes. Kitch has a comprehensive schedule of events which can be found on their website. So, if you want a night out that is a little bit more special than normal, Kitch is a great venue to consider - from a romantic dinner to a night out with a group of friends, this venue ticks all the boxes.

WINE NOTES
Young Winemakers from Vintae By Andrew J Linn
If you ask any 10-year old what they want to be when they grow up, the answer will almost certainly involve some form of computer science, medicine, law, engineering or similar pursuit. The rather less than usual choices involving the military, veterinary practice, journalism and ship’s captain do feature, as indeed they should for their social and commercial usefulness, but what about farmer or hop grower or winemaker – surely scraping along at the bottom of the list? Yet these have something important in common: a direct and often altruistic desire to influence the way things we eat or drink get created. Ricardo Arambarri is managing director and co-founder of Vintae, a relatively young company but already with 40 bodegas producing wine in 15 regions and two continents, using 38 grape varieties, and exporting to 64 countries. He and his partner, Raúl Acha (“Richi”), were born in small Rioja villages four decades ago into one of the many thousands of winery-owning families in the region. Most of these sold their annual wine production at the bodega door by the litre. Life was hard, but rewarding.
While the rest of their siblings went off to work in the big cities, Raúl and Ricardo stayed on, determined to make a career of winemaking. As a result, 17 years ago what is now the Vintae Group came into being, using unconventional methods to grow what is currently one of the country’s most dynamic premium bodega groups. If we had to summarise the reasons for its runaway success it would be a desire to make outstanding wines, and an understanding of marketing and social media that sets it apart from its competitors, all added to an attention to detail that is quite extraordinary. As Richi explains, “Sometimes the wine business is too boring, so we try to tell the stories, to communicate through our labels and across social media. Notably we have always been very fair in terms of price. “We didn’t want to be just one more Rioja winery: we wanted to be different. That is when Vintae was born. When we started, I was terrified of just having to deal with the classic Spanish wine consumers, who love Rioja Reservas and the traditional brands. We really wanted to connect with other people.
156 JANUARY & FEBRUARY 2019
Cuisine HL61.indd 156
21/12/18 20:30
“Our project was to make exciting wines for a broader public. The philosophy is that Vintae is a new way of seeing the wine industry. Our aim is to do exciting projects, in some little-known regions, with unfamiliar grape varieties, making authentic wines from all over Spain. “We’ve always been very focused on the more open-minded consumers. Our aim is to try to attract new consumers to the wine world, to offer exciting things for these people who are open-minded, and for this reason we have already been very dynamic with our labelling, our marketing and our approach to the consumer. (The labels of their wines from the Toro region, for example, feature portraits of bodega workers’ faces; while the brand Matsu means “wait” in Japanese.) “Spain has an inferiority complex,” adds Arambarri. “When I grew up we were always seeing on TV Italian design, German technology, English engineering – many things like this. In the ‘80s and ‘90s new grape varieties arrived – Merlot, Cabernet, Syrah – and all the wineries were turning to what they called “variedades mejorantes” (‘improved grape varieties’), so it seemed that the future was Merlot, Cabernet…” The team has an adventurous, even picaresque, streak about it – passionate about old vines and working with varieties that were at one time on the point of disappearing. One such is the Moscatel de Grano Menudo (aka Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains), which in the 1980s almost vanished from Rioja. In addition to their Lopez de Haro-brand Riojas, Vintae make wines in Toro, Rueda, Penedés, Bierzo, and Valdeorras: cool-climate whites from indigenous varieties, old vine reds from Ribera del Duero, natural wines from Navarra – they even make a Rioja Garnacha ice-wine. Common to all these wines, wherever they are made, says Ricardo, is the goal of elegance – lower alcohol levels, refreshing acidity, natural fermentation, not too much oak, focusing more on terroir. All Vintae-owned vineyards are organic and all growers the company works with are moving towards organic cultivation. The first wine they produced, Rioja’s López de Haro, is already considered a classic, and the latest is the remarkable new Ribera del Duero range of Bordos. Another distinctive element of the Vintae profile is the team’s passion for the Garnacha grape and, if you want to get a sense of an entire across-the-board selection, here are some not-to-be missed names: Hacienda López de Haro Edición Limitada 2016 (€9.65), ditto Reserva 2014 (€9.30), ditto Blanco 2017 (€4.95), Matsu El Recio 2016 (€12.90), ditto El Viejo 2016 (€32.95), Garnacha Perdida del Pirineo 2016 (€17.90), Garnacha Salvaje del Moncayo 2016 (€7.50), Garnatxa Fosca Priorat 2016 (€10.95) and the beautiful Libalis White 2017 (€7.90). Avoiding Back Surgery … AND EATING FOR MEMORY ENHANCEMENT Medical Minutes by John Schieszer
PULSED RADIOFREQUENCY MAY HELP RELIEVE BACK PAIN A minimally invasive procedure in which pulses of energy from a probe are applied directly to nerve roots near the spine is safe and effective in people with acute lower back pain that has not responded to conservative treatment, according to a new study presented at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). Lumbar disk herniation is a common, often debilitating, condition that affects the disks that act as cushions between the vertebrae of the lower spine. Herniation occurs where the jelly-like material in the centre of the disk bulges through a tear in the disk’s tough exterior layer and puts pressure on the roots of the nerves. Herniated disks are often the source of sciatica, or pain that radiates downward from the lower back into the leg. Conservative treatment options for herniated disks range from over-the-counter pain medications to injections of corticosteroids directly into the affected area of the spine. Those who don’t respond may require surgery. In some cases, the entire disk must be removed and the vertebra fused together for stability. An alternative technique, CT-guided pulsed radiofrequency, applies energy through an electrode under CT guidance to the portion of the nerve responsible for sending pain signals. “Pulsed radiofrequency creates a nerve modulation, significantly reducing inflammation and its associated symptoms,” said study senior author Dr. Alessandro Napoli, who is a professor of interventional radiology at Sapienza University of Rome in Italy.
Dr. Napoli and colleagues studied the approach in patients with back pain from lumbar disk herniation that had not responded to prolonged conservative treatment. In 128 patients, the pulsed radiofrequency treatment was delivered directly under CT guidance to the root of the nerve. The treatment was applied for 10 minutes. For comparison, a group of 120 patients received one to three sessions of CT-guided steroid injection on the same anatomical target with no pulsed radiofrequency. The one-year outcomes demonstrated that CT-guided pulsed radiofrequency was superior to the injection-only strategy. Patients who received it saw greater overall improvement in pain and disability scores during the first year. Relief of leg pain was faster in patients assigned to pulsed radiofrequency, and they also reported a faster rate of perceived recovery. The probability of perceived recovery after one year of follow-up was 95 per cent in the pulsed radiofrequency group compared with 61 per cent in the injection only group. COMBATING MEMORY LOSS WITH A HEALTHFUL DIET Eating leafy greens, dark orange vegetables, red vegetables and berry fruits and drinking orange juice may be associated with a lower risk of memory loss over time, according to a new study out of Harvard. Researchers looked at 27,842 men with an average age of 51 who were all health professionals and found that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables may help prevent memory loss.
158 JANUARY & FEBRUARY 2019
Health & Beauty HL61.indd 158
21/12/18 20:33
Participants filled out questionnaires about how many servings of fruits, vegetables and other foods they had each day at the beginning of the study and then every four years for 20 years. A serving of fruit is considered one cup of fruit or half a cup of fruit juice. A serving of vegetables is considered one cup of raw vegetables or two cups of leafy greens. “One of the most important factors in this study is that we were able to research and track such a large group of men over a 20-year period of time, allowing for very telling results,” said study author Changzheng Yuan, who is with Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston. “Our studies provide further evidence dietary choices can be important to maintain your brain health.” The study showed that men who consumed the most vegetables were 34 per cent less likely to develop poor thinking skills than the men who consumed the least amount of vegetables. The men who drank orange juice every day were 47 per cent less likely to develop poor thinking skills than the men who drank less than one serving per month.

Would I Lie to You?
Have you ever wondered about how respiratory mortality rates compare across the UK and other EU countries? Perhaps not! Researchers publishing in the British Medical Journal have explored data from the World Health Organisation’s mortality database to answer just this question. This amazing database records all deaths from 1955 categorised by cause of death, country, age and sex. The researchers were able to compare death rates caused by different respiratory disease in EU15+ countries (all member states of the EU before May 2004), as well as Australia, Canada, US and Norway, with UK mortality rates. In short, the results showed that there were significantly higher levels of respiratory deaths (standardised for age) in the UK than in most other countries. Importantly though, deaths from respiratory disease had declined from 1985 to 2015 (the study period) in both UK and EU15+ countries. This study was not designed to identify the reasons for the discrepancies, but the authors were able to produce a few theories. Possibly, higher rates of smoking in the UK compared with other countries could explain these findings. However, as the prevalence of smoking has decreased in the UK without any appreciable narrowing of the gap in mortality this looks unlikely. Another, more feasible, explanation is that higher levels of air pol-
By Rachel Garrod
lution in the UK, estimated to contribute to 25.7 deaths per 100,000, is a contributory factor. Interestingly, in an unrelated study published in JAMA Open, survey evidence showed that eight out of 10 patients intentionally withheld important information from their doctor, or omitted to inform doctors about lifestyle practices. Generally, because patients either did not want to hear how harmful their practices were or to be judged by the clinician: they underplayed the amount of smoking or drinking they did and overestimated the amount of exercise. We do ourselves, and the medical profession, a disservice by not telling “the whole truth”. Although we may not always want to hear our doctor’s opinion of our behaviour, without full information the doctor may not order tests that would support an early diagnosis. And there is a significant body of evidence that tells us that early diagnosis is imperative to enabling effective cures. So don’t be coy with the truth with your health practitioner: their job is not to judge, but to treat and - after all - they may be no angel either! DBS Superleggera MOTORING MARRIAGE OF TWO ILLUSTRIOUS NAMES
Aston Martin is not known for doing things in half measures. In fact, more likely in double doses. Such is the case with the new DBS Superleggera, a supercar thoroughbred that marks the return of two renowned names. With DBS, Aston Martin revives an iconic nameplate that first appeared in 1967; while Touring’s famous brand, Superleggera, also once again adorns the bonnet of an Aston Martin. This collaboration originally paved the way for the DB4, DB5 and DB6 Mark 1, and the DBS Superleggera now pays tribute to the famous Italian coachbuilder’s historic super lightweight construction technology. In the words of Aston Martin, “In the new DBS Superleggera, we have a Super GT that’s a breed apart. One that takes the fight to the world’s best on its own terms. Clad using immaculately sculpted carbon fibre body panels, this latest model is blessed with muscular, highly individual styling. A look that’s perfectly matched by epic performance courtesy of Aston Martin’s 5.2-litre
twin-turbo V12, tuned to produce tremendous power and immense torque for breath-taking response and extraordinary in-gear performance.” The DBS Superleggera replaces the Vanquish S. With 725PS, 900Nm of torque, a top speed of 340 km/h (211mph) and acceleration from zero to 100 km/h (62mph) in just 3.4 seconds and zero to 160 km/h (100mph) in 6.4 seconds, the DBS delivers a memorable driving experience and class-leading ingear acceleration, with 80 to 160 km/h (50-100mph) achieved in fourth gear in 4.2 seconds. The new supercar is resolutely modern in design and engineering, while still evoking the reputations of Aston Martin’s most potent and popular flagships from the past. “Combining generous proportions with aggression and athleticism, DBS Superleggera expresses itself with an explicit design language: one that combines compelling curves with advanced aerodynamics for a sleek shape that both cheats the wind and clamps the car to the road.”
164 JANUARY & FEBRUARY 2019
Open Road HL61.indd 164
21/12/18 20:36
Evolving innovative aerodynamic concepts first seen on the DB11 – such as the curlicue and Aeroblade – are taken further with an F1-inspired doublediffuser. The DBS Superleggera generates 180 kilograms of downforce at VMAX: the highest figure ever for a series production Aston Martin. This significant increase comes with no additional drag penalty. The heart of the DBS Superleggera is Aston Martin’s 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 engine. Set low and as far back in the chassis as possible to optimise the centre-of-gravity and weight distribution, the engine develops 725PS at 6500rpm and 900Nm from 1800-5000rpm. Detailed tuning of the V12, together with a new exhaust strategy with active valves and quad tail pipes, “ensures DBS Superleggera has a commanding and powerful sound character, particularly in the more aggressive dynamic modes, while retaining a level of refinement and civility that compliments its role as the consummate Super GT”.
The chassis is an evolution of the latest-generation lightweight bonded aluminium structure first seen on the DB11, with forged double wishbones at the front and a sophisticated multi-link system at the rear. Latest-generation adaptive damping is fitted as standard, with sensors detecting the prevailing driving conditions, as well as the driver’s individual demands. Both the powertrain and chassis have a choice of three dynamic modes – GT, Sport and Sport Plus. The DBS Superleggera features a high level of craftsmanship with extensive scope for personalisation. Supple, aromatic leather and Alcantara upholstery come as standard, as well as the Sports Plus performance seats and steering wheel. There is a choice of two alloy wheel designs, and also a choice of designer specifications, with specially chosen colour and trim combinations selected by the Aston Martin design team “to accentuate certain aspects of DBS Superleggera’s character”.

Sponsored by the BBVA Foundation and curated by Eleanor Clayton, the exhibition was originally produced by The Hepworth Wakefield in collaboration with the Fundació Joan Miró, which is now offering an expanded version of the show in its galleries with contributions from Martina Millà, Teresa Montaner and Sònia Villegas, the Fundació’s programming director, collections director and conservator, respectively. According to the organisers, “Through Miller’s eye, the exhibition reconstructs one of the least known moments of surrealism, revealing the connections that existed between the British artists of the 1930s and 1940s and the international surrealist network. “The nine sections of the exhibition are built around Miller’s compelling biography. First a model and muse, she then achieved a successful career in photography, pioneering across the fields of art, fashion and journalism.
“Lee Miller and Surrealism in Britain” comprises nearly 200 pieces, including photographs, drawings, paintings and sculptures, for the first time creating a dialogue between an extensive representation of her photographic work and masterpieces by some of the most prominent surrealist artists, such as Max Ernst, Leonora Carrington, Man Ray, Yves Tanguy, Eileen Agar, Roland Penrose, Paul Nash, Salvador Dalí, Giorgio de Chirico, Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, Maruja Mallo, Francis Picabia, Àngel Planells and Dora Maar. “The project highlights the fact that Lee Miller, despite being a unique artist, also played a key role and was deeply involved in shaping one of the most vibrant art scenes of the 20th century.” Meanwhile, back in Málaga, the Museo Picasso has announced details of its 2019 exhibitions: “Olga Picasso”, “Bruce Nauman – Retrospective”, and “Calder-Picasso”. Each of the scheduled exhibitions will have its own programme of cultural activities, enabling visitors to discover their principal artistic and historic features.

Olga Picasso (26 February-2 June) The exhibition examines the relationship between Picasso and his first wife, Olga Khokhlova. “It puts into perspective the creation of some of Picasso’s major works and reconstructs his body of work within the context of a personal story that developed alongside a different political and social one,” explains the museum. “Throughout the artist’s classical period, Olga was the Picasso model par excellence. During the upheaval of Europe between the wars, his depictions of her were to undergo a metamorphosis, as their relationship gradually deteriorated.” The exhibition is organised by Musée National Picasso-Paris and Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso para el Arte (Madrid), in collaboration with the A.S. Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts (Moscow), Museo Picasso Málaga and CaixaForum Madrid. Bruce Nauman – Retrospective (summer 2019) An American multi-media artist who has been active since the 1960s, Bruce Nauman’s innovative contributions to art are based on “his way of understanding art to be more of activity or process than the production of objects. He frequently reflects upon on the human body, and his works highlight the relationships that are established between objects, the space around them and the observer.” These works contain references to music, dance, literature and philosophy, “and generate in the viewer the kind of responses that are associated with provocation, conflict, tension, disorientation, and anxiety. His irony is clear from his wordplay and from the relationships established between the viewer, space and artwork.” The exhibition will encompass the wide range of techniques employed by Nauman, including video, sculpture, installation, neon lighting, architectural structures, photography, and drawing. Calder-Picasso (24 September-2 February 2020) This is the first exhibition in Spain dedicated to exploring the creative connections between these two 20th century modern masters: Alexander Calder (1898–1976) and Pablo Picasso (1881–1973). “In divergent yet resonant ways, both artists expressed and exploited the void – or the absence of space – and, consequently, innovated entirely new ways for viewers to perceive and experience art.” The exhibition is organised in collaboration with Musée National Picasso-Paris, the Calder Foundation (New York), and Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso para el Arte (Madrid).

EXPERT ADVICE
Civil Responsibilities WHEN BUYING A NEW PROPERTY IN SPAIN Article supplied by Welex Lawyers & Accountants
Have you bought a new build property in Spain - or do you want to purchase a newly built one? Spanish law establishes a series of guarantee periods, enabling consumers to exercise corresponding legal actions in Spain for any material damages that can arise after the construction of a building, or part of one, against the agents who took part in the construction: a) A term of guarantee for a period of 10 years, for those material damages caused to the building as a consequence of the existence of defects or damages that affect the foundations, supports, beams, slabs, load-bearing walls or other structural elements, which may compromise the mechanical strength and stability of the building. b) A term of guarantee for a period of three years, as a result of the existence or appearance of any material damages due to defects or deficiencies of those constructive elements that imply the breach of any habitability requirements, such as hygiene, health, noise, energy saving, environmental protection or rational use of energy.
c) A term of guarantee for a period of one year, to exercise actions against the constructor for any material damages that affect elements of completion or finishing of the works. In Spain, actions to demand liability expire within two years from the occurrence of said damages, as long as these appear within the aforementioned guarantee periods. The responsibility is considered to be jointly held among all agents involved in the construction process when the cause of the material damage cannot be identified, or the concurrence of faults is proven but without determining the degree of intervention by each agent in the damage produced. In any case, the developer will be liable to the purchaser of a property for those material damages arising from construction defects. If you have purchased a new home in Spain, or if you have made any alterations to it, and you notice any damage, consult our litigation law firm in Marbella, where we will analyse your case and the measures that can be adopted.
