Editorial The term “genius” is often used clumsily to embellish a less notable personal quality or achievement. Early in his presidency, Donald Trump repeatedly claimed that his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin had called him a genius. Now, we stoically resist the temptation to introduce political comment into the pages of Home & Lifestyle Magazine, but we have to say that even his most ardent devotees might struggle to adhere to that definition of the US president. Apparently, there was some confusion over the translation of what Putin actually said - and he was more likelier to have meant “colourful”. Clearly not so dubitable a description of Trump’s persona. The Oxford Dictionary defines genius as being “exceptional intellectual or creative power or other natural ability”, which would cover a fairly broad spectrum of people over the centuries - but we are going to focus on just one. Unquestionably, when it comes to “an exceptionally intelligent person with exceptional skill in a particular area” (another Oxford definition), Leonardo da Vinci would come close to the top of any objective person’s list - in many cases, number one. His skills covered so much more than one area. An authentic polymath, he dabbled in (to varying degrees) painting, art, literature, sculpture, music, poetry, philosophy, mathematics, geology, anatomy, botany, palaeontology, geometry, cartography and - specifically in our context of home design and urban lifestyle - engineering, architecture and town planning. In short, the paradigm of a “Universal Genius” or “Renaissance Man”. Lionardo di ser Piero da Vinci (his full birth name) was born on 15 April 1452 in the Tuscan town of Vinci, and he died in France, in Los Lucé (Val de Loire), on 2 May 1519. This month is, therefore, the 500th anniversary of his death, at 67, reportedly from a recurrent stroke. He spent two artistic periods in Milan - 1482 to 1499 and 1506 to 1513 - so it was fitting that this year’s Salone Internazionale del Mobile paid a major tribute to both his overall life and his links to the Italian city. As Salone president Claudio Luti noted, “Leonardo represents genius, curiosity, the pleasure of experimenting, and the desire to bring culture and innovation together. He is a figure who symbolises all our values, focused on talent and research, which entails the ability to think and, equally, to do everything possible to enable ideas come to fruition.” Salone del Mobile paid homage with two exhibitions: “DE-SIGNO - The Art of Italian Design Before and After Leonardo”, an atmospheric narration of his links to the art of contemporary Italian design and savoir-faire; and “AQUA - Leonardo Da Vinci’s Water Vision”. Re. the latter, Claudio Luti said, “The installation is intended as a celebration of the great Renaissance master and his capacity for innovation, meaning an aptitude to always look beyond, laying down the foundations for progress, i.e. continually surpassing what exists. These are gifts that are inherent in our design/business system and which our city fully embodies. By showcasing his studies of water in a physical and pivotal place such as the Conca dell’Incoronata, we are building a bridge between past and future, offering a vision of how things were and how things can be when creative and business talent meet.” For a vision of Leonardo da Vincci’s creative brilliance closer to home, La Caixa, in collaboration with Málaga City Hall, has inaugurated an exhibition in Calle Alcazabilla that asks the questions, “What is the secret of Leonardo da Vinci’s creativity?” and “What does his thinking offer us, citizens of the 21st century?” Continuing until 21 May, the show aims to answer these questions from an innovative perspective, not focusing on his genius but rather “as an attitude to life, as a way of looking at and interacting with reality, with curiosity being the engine that gave free rein to his genius”.

Outdoor galore

When choosing your outdoor furniture, you first need to assess the area available, ensuring that you leave enough space to be able to move around comfortably and conveniently. Modular furniture always gives you more options in terms of layout, allowing you to more easily cater for varying numbers of guests. The general trend is towards comfortable padded furniture, handy movable side tables, cool shade solutions, and outdoor fireplaces and firepits to create the ultimate cosy outdoor ambience.

The Faz sunlounger from Vondom was created by Ramón Esteve, who is considered to be “an architect of harmony, serenity, timelessness and universality”. Its upholstery is of the highest quality, using nautical canvas or polyester. Vondom is available through Outdoor Concepts at the top of the Boulevard in San Pedro de Alcántara (www.outdoorconcepts.es) and Ambar Decoraciones in San Pedro de Alcántara (www.ambardecoraciones.com).

Enthralling

Walls

Whether you want to go bright and bold or neutral and subtle, wallpapers are a great way to set the mood for a room. Wallpaper adds depth and warmth to a space, and patterned wallpaper makes an artistic statement that monotone paint simply cannot match - hiding any of the wall’s imperfections.

The Guadalajara collection from Élitis’s Panoramique range is a silk and linen craft weave on vinyl embossed wallpaper. It combines varying colours of green, offering a striking wall of colour that is knock-resistant and washable. Available from ID Latinia in Edif. Playa del Duque in Puerto Banús (www. idlatinia.com), Siesta Interior Design in C. Living Chic

If the kitchen is the belly of the home, the living room is the heart. Our beloved living room is where we relax with a good book or film, as well as entertain guests. This room is the space that should most represent you, so choose your furniture carefully, ensuring that you do not overfill it - and placing each piece the best way that suits the room’s orientation. Good-quality materials will give the room a sophisticated feel. Go bold with a statement wall, chair or rug to create a designer feel and bring a focus to the space.

Living Divani’s Extrasoft sofa designed by Piero Lissoni is built for comfort as well as versatility, allowing you to arrange it in any way that suits your particular living space (www.livingdivani.it).

Bedrooms to dream about The bedroom is where we recharge our batteries so this space is hugely personal to us. Investing in a goodquality bed is like investing in your health because we all know that, when we sleep well, our bodies function better mentally and physically. Keeping the room orderly is good for the mind, allowing you to relax more easily, but take care not to make it too clinical and starchy like a corporate hotel. Lighting is always important to soften the ambience, but also consider plants, a throw and perhaps a rug to add a more inviting feel to the room.

in its Prime

A dining table is not just a functional piece of furniture - it also adds to the feel of a home. The shape, material, colour and chairs that you choose to complement it should be well-considered to ensure comfort, practicality and, of course, style for when you invite your guests to the table.

Rugs

Rugs finish off a room in style, often giving the space a focal point or simply a cosier and more inviting feel. Never skimp on quality when it comes to rugs, as they have to be resilient to wear and tear. If the room is echoey, a rug is great for noise reduction.

Curtains soften the look of a room, controlling the light that enters as well as offering temperature control and privacy. Whether you fancy light and airy voiles or heavier drapes, a curtain adds an elegant touch to an otherwise stark window. Here are some inspiring ideas…

Creating Attractive

and Comfortable Settings Interview with Fernando Guerrero from Dairin Decoración Photos by Julia Roder

You have been well-established in Marbella for over 40 years. For people not yet familiar with your company, what can they expect from Dairin Decoración? Dairin Decoración is a company specialising in fabrics for upholstery and drapery, with 44 years of experience in the business. We are curtain and upholstery manufacturers, and have a wide showcase of fabrics and wallpapers, carpets, beds, furniture... offering the most exclusive brands in the market. We create attractive, comfortable and well-equipped spaces, offering technical, functional and artistic solutions in accordance with each type of project. What are the latest trends in fabrics, colours and materials for contemporary homes? The new collections come packed with a wide range of colours, with vivid tones predominating, greens that lead us to the stunning Mediterranean blue hues of Greece. Mustard is making a significant comeback; pale pink, orange and burgundy are being mixed as different patterns with floral motifs, plants, birds and all kinds of animals. Patterns with a lot of movement that blend perfectly with geometric shapes, stripes and plain colours. On the other hand, the seventies have been updated again, the moire effect and bright colours with their “animosities”; and animal print textures for the most daring customers are once again a popular trend. Each piece is unique and, increasingly, more is more - updating non-minimalist baroque or Frenchified minimalism that is the result of a fusion of styles. Vintage fashion and Scottish tapestries in curtains and upholstery never go out of fashion, creating elegant and modern spaces. Another classic that never dies is stripes that can be used for all types of decoration, both indoors and outdoors.

Playing with fabrics, we add the necessary ingredient to a space that lacks style. Be it a curtain, cushions, a headboard or a plaid, fabric gives personality to any kind of environment. What especially interesting projects have you been involved in recently? We are involved in many different types of projects. We work for professionals, architecture and decoration studios, developers, real estate companies and construction companies, as well as private clients. Dairin comprises a team of specialists, offering everything from comprehensive renovations that include interior design to small projects such as upholstering a sofa that has become old looking or changing curtains to upgrade a room. Each project is unique, and each client has specific needs. We are currently also working with major hotels on the Costa del Sol. If a reader has a favourite furniture item and would like to have it upholstered, what would be the process at Dairin? We select the material with which the piece is going to be upholstered, we restore it, we change the filling if necessary, the ironworks, the paint, and we fix any small defects - all this in our own workshop, Tapicerías Guerrero. In this way, we give new life to furniture, enhancing the décor. We invite readers to visit our showroom and meet all our team, who will be able to guide them through the different processes which are of interest to them. Beautiful Bathrooms

Turn your bathroom into an aesthetically alluring sanctuary where you can relax, beautify and cleanse. Going for a total overhaul when updating your bathroom is not always necessary and can be expensive. So, if budget is a consideration, changing taps and the sink, or adding some new tiles, can achieve a major style difference and doesn’t break the bank.

Archeda’s Aroma wall-hung washbasin has wooden open cabinetry with a lacquered drawer, as well as an illuminated mirror above. Their semi-recessed sink is made from black ceramic to give it a contemporary chic look (www.archeda.eu).

Lightness and linearity are key characteristics of the Skill bathroom range, designed by Carlo Presotto and Andrea Bassanello, as its innovative patented system is just five millimetres thick - something of a revolutionary concept. Its profile is entirely sunk into the door, which is perceived as extremely narrow and light. The

patent is the result of a great deal of technical research that merges stylish design with functionality, plus the value-added feature of combining different materials and finishes. What is also particularly interesting is how it makes the most of the limited space thanks to the floor-toceiling vertical design. The elegant stoneware,

which comes as one single structure, combined with a stoneware backsplash with a Gres Vintage finish perfectly matches the Milltech tall unit (2.70 metres) and Reflex finish. The freestanding bathtub is resin-coated. Modulnova is located in Avda. Salamanca in San Pedro de Alcántara (www.modulnovamarbella.com).

Kitchens

With our hectic lives, kitchens need to be easy to clean and well-equipped with efficient appliances and easy-to-use gadgetry to help us knock up our culinary creations. The use of natural materials such as stone and wood has become an increasingly popular trend, making the space less sterile and more inviting.

The Bees Have it

We all know what wonderful little insects bees are, how they are important in the food chain and how we have to save them. Start off with NOT using any kind of pesticide unless it is impossible not to. You can use some methods which will not harm them. Over 70 per cent of the world’s crops are at least partially pollinated by bees. Without these pollinators, we would face a substantial loss of crop diversity. In your own garden, a loss of pollinators means no more courgettes, pumpkins, summer squash, apples, berries or melons. Some crops, such as carrots and onions, rely on bees to produce seed, rather than edible plant parts. Not forgetting the beautiful flowers… If you must apply pesticides, apply them only to the affected plants, and preferably when the plants aren’t in bloom. Spray late in the evening when bees aren’t active and during dry conditions, if possible, since dew can retain the toxins. Try these… The best is neem oil. Derived from the Azadirachta indica evergreen tree native to the Indian subcontinent, neem has been hailed as the organic gardener’s best friend. Alternatively, there is vinegar, epsom salt, chrysanthemum, pepper, garlic and onion, aluminium foil, essential oils… I use garlic cloves crushed into a spray bottle of water, let it sit for three days and then spray liberally - and the same for onions and pepper if they are used. Crinkling aluminium foil around the bottom of the plants will help to keep pests off, especially with a liberal sprinkling of chillies or ground black pepper and making a lip pointing inwards. Now, as to which plants you should plant for them to pollinate, there are many. Lemon Queen sunflowers, California poppy, dandelions, borage, African blue basil, rock purslane, Spanish lavender, African daisies, Pride of Madeira, catnip, hollyhocks, honeysuckle, thyme, sage and a whole lot more. I have three large lavender pots sitting on the window ledges outside the bedrooms, as the smell is a deterrent to mosquitoes but delightful to us. Use them liberally to give sweet smells and produce lovely flowers; even the herbs have pretty flowers and bees love them. Lots of plants together make for a much better impact than single ones. If you have pots, get larger sizes and plant three together - flowers look lovely en masse. We are killing our planet with the use of horrendous pesticides. It’s not necessary in your garden if you take care and think about what and how to use the organic methods I have written about. Sitting in the sun listening to bees buzz is good. It’s a sign that your garden is doing what it should be doing. Alia Babapulle. Interior and Exterior Designer Tel. (+34) 616 670 975 / aliabdesigns@live.co.uk

Sevilla

Rehabilitation

Historic Shipyard Building Transformed into Modern Corporate Environment Lalzada has completed a comprehensive renovation of a former shipyards complex in Sevilla. According to the Madrid-based architecture and interior design studio, the work involved a “perfect dialogue between the original architecture of the complex, which once housed Astilleros de Sevilla, with the versatility and elegance of its renovated interior spaces”. Now converted into offices for the GRI Towers Group, the building is highlighted by sophisticated white tones and a multi-functional, diaphanous ambience. Astilleros de Sevilla represents an important part of the city’s historical heritage: 70 years at the same current site and considered one of 20th century Spain’s key commercial and industrial focal points. “As a building with so much history between its walls, Lalzada had a double objective: to shape its identity by creating unique spaces adapted to the corporate image and needs of GRI Towers; and to respect the property’s original philosophy, placing high value on its past as a former shipyard. The result has been a complete remodelling of the interior to adapt it to the company’s activities, reconverting it into a functional, modern and elegant environment.” Lalzada pinpoints its four most important business pillars as creativity, perfectionism, commitment and global vision. www.lalzada.com

Pristine-Picture Performance and Immersive Sound Unveiled at Salon del Mobile in Milan in April, Bang & Olufsen’s Beovision Harmony is a TV experience created to elevate the design of any living space and fill it with state-of-the-art sound. When Beovision Harmony is turned off or just playing music, the thin screen rests close to the floor, partially covered by two meticulously crafted oak and aluminium fronts housing the powerful sound centre. When it is turned on, the two fronts fan out — “like a butterfly opening its wings” — and the screen rises to the ideal

viewing height. The intricate grading pattern is carefully designed to maximise acoustic performance of the three-channel, fully active DSP-based sound centre. Paired with LG’s 77” OLED screen this latest Bang & Olufsen design piece for luxurious home décor and entertainment brings new life to movies, sporting events and other shows. Bang & Olufsen is available from Beocustom (Bang and Olufsen Málaga) in Calle Hilera 5. Information is also available from Illusion in Urb. Guadalcántara (www.e-illusion.es).

Cutting-Edge Transformation of TV Installations Buying a new TV set has always been the easy part. Arriving home and facing the installation process, less so - at least for those of us slightly challenged in the DIY department. As Samsung notes in a news release about “How installing a TV Has Changed”, for a long time there weren’t many choices. “The deep and heavy CRT TVs needed to go in the corner on a strong piece of furniture to support their weight. Even as screens grew bigger and thinner, they were usually installed on the wall in the middle of the living room, to hide the unattractive sides and back of the TV set and complicated power and connecting cables.” Today, as impressively advanced models and styles have been launched onto the market, installation has become more straightforward and less cumbersome. If you want to find out how, and put your mind at rest, Samsung is available from TD Sat & Sound in Pol. Ind. San Pedro Alcántara and Marmorin Design Center on Marbella’s Golden Mile (www.tdsatandsound.com), where their team of professionals will be able to offer invaluable purchase and installation advice.

Marbella Design returns to the Costa del Sol this summer as one of Spain’s premier fairs for interior decorators and designers. To be held from 4 to 15 July at the Palacio de Ferias, Congresos y Exposiciones in Marbella, the exhibition will involve more than 40 leading industry figures, accompanied by the sector’s premier brands. According to the organisers, the objective is “to turn the event into a sensory and artistic experience for visitors, situating itself as the epicentre of the world of interior design, decoration and luxury design”. To that end, some of the top names they have attracted include… Erico Navazo & Villeroy & Boch: Chosen by AD magazine as best interior designer this year, Erico Navazo is synonymous with elegance and style. He returns to the exhibition with Villeroy & Boch, a leading manufacturer in the ceramics, bathrooms and wellness, tableware and kitchenware sectors. Viteri Lapeña & Ramos y Cobos: With nearly two decades of experience, the Viteri Lapeña studio is known for putting its soul into all projects to ensure that each is “unique and unrepeatable”. The studio will be accompa-

nied by Ramos y Cobos, showcasing its own ongoing commitment to both latest technologies and more traditional techniques. Marisa Gallo: After more than 20 years in the world of design, Marisa is highly regarded for the “uniqueness and balance, elegance and timelessness” of her creative output. Adriana Nicolau: One of the maxims of her projects is “a search for cosy spaces with personality, where just entering feels you are in familiar territory”. Gastón y Daniela Málaga & ExintStudio: Since its inception in 1876, the renowned Gastón y Daniela brand has managed to remain at the forefront of high-textile decoration; while ExintStudio’s works are characterised by a “personal and unique freshness”. Also on the agenda this year, following its success in 2018, is the “Design for Life” conference series on 13 July, highlighted by debate on latest trends in home decoration and design, both in Spain and internationally. Home & Lifestyle Magazine is officially collaborating with the Marbella Design Fair. www.marbelladesignfair.com

Salone Internazionale del Mobile

Visionary Innovation and Sustainable Excellence in Milan

156 MAY & JUNE 2019

Fairs HL63.indd 156

26/4/19 14:17

The 58th edition of the world’s premier home design and décor fair once again remained determinedly true to its “vocation as a laboratory for experimentation and cross-pollution”. This year’s Salone International del Mobile in Milan comprised six majors exhibitions taking place concurrently, with more than 2,400 exhibitors split between the main fair, the International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition, Euroluce, Workplace3.0 and S.Project, together with 550 young designers at SaloneSatellite. Launching the 2019 fair, the organisers declared, “Ingenuity, vision, innovation, sustainable excellence and emotion sum up the familial lexicon of the Salone del Mobile which, back on the starting blocks, is even more global, inclusive and in dialogue with the city, the institutions and the creative and productive furnishing system… a place for interface and new opportunities for reflection on the world of design and designing.” The Salone’s overall “Manifesto” incorporated a new word, “Genius” - to shine a spotlight on intelligence as “a driver of creativity, sense of talent, brilliance in doing and thinking. These gifts are characteristic of the companies represented at the Salone, which the designers working with them develop on an ongoing basis and which the roots on which the manufacturing system is founded have transmitted and succoured.”

As for the overall fair, the organisers noted that the main objective with both the Salone Internazionale del Mobile and the International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition was to “cater to many and varied aesthetic tastes, in which the stars are increasingly innovative products that respond perfectly to the changing contemporary social structure, the consequent rapid changes in the furnishing market and the individual demands of each and every client”. To that end, the area devoted to xLux was enlarged, “in response to the latest evolutions within the sector and the recent interest in timeless luxury, revisited in a contemporary key”. Also making its debut was S.Project, “a crosscutting exhibition format that acts as a magnifying glass for decoding and reflecting on the latest interior design product and design strategies. A multi-faceted space in which the keywords are multi-sector, synergy and quality.” The 30th edition of Euroluce showcased integrated and smart lighting, “increasingly the province of design, geared to illuminating as well as ‘feeling‘ and ‘living’ the space. Technological developments, the evolution of control systems and the miniaturisation of light sources have thrown open new possibilities.” The keywords for this edition were experimentation and technological innovation, sustainability and aesthetics.

SaloneSatellite, now in its 22nd edition, focused on the crossover between different spheres and vocabularies. The topical and cultural theme proposed to the 550 talented young designers involved was Food as a Design Object… “because food is a product on the same level as others, which have always evolved from creativity and human need. It demands careful planning, as well as a study of artisan and industrial processes, both traditional and not – as well as a healthy dose of curiosity and openness towards cultures other than one’s own. Our hope is that these young people will come up with designs fuelled by avant-garde vision, ideas, projects and original contributions.” During this year’s Leonardo da Vinci celebrations (500 years since his death), the Salone del Mobile marked its indissoluble links with Milan and the city’s “favourite son” with two powerfully evocative installations – one in the city and the other at the fairgrounds – providing visitors with a memorable cultural and emotional experience. “AQUA: Leonardo da Vinci’s Water Vision” at the Conca dell’Incoronata harnessed hyper-technology to flesh out the great master’s studies of water, “imagining a Milan of the future in which the water courses acquire new meaning and usefulness”. Conceived by Marco Balich for the Salone del Mobile, this site-specific immersive installation referenced “responsible and far-sighted

design capable of improving the relationship between man and the city”. The Salone also showcased a project designed to celebrate Leonardo’s legacy to the art of design and savoir-faire. “DE-SIGNO: The art of Italian design before and after Leonardo” narrated the Renaissance genius’s relationship with contemporary Italian design with commentary by Italian cinema and theatre actor and cinematographer Diego Abatantuono. During the closing evening at Palazzo Marino, one of Italy’s most versatile and iconic architects and designers, Mario Bellini, was presented with a special lifetime award. The award recognised the multi-faceted and innovative Milanese designer’s creativity and talent, “as a plaudit for his ability to translate ideas and projects into products, initiatives and architecture, and as a thank you for his huge contribution to the Salone del Mobile through his collaboration with so many exhibiting companies”. Finally, first prize in the SaloneSatellite award was presented to the Kuli-Kuli studio in Japan for its Kobe Leather project. The designers, in collaboration with local tanners, decided to turn cowhide, not traditionally used, into a collection of new products. www.salonemilano.it

Adding Material Warmth to

Contemporary Builds Article supplied by Atlas Group

The Costa del Sol is experiencing a strong trend for contemporary architecture, with clean, sharp lines and typically white builds. However, organic materials such as wood and natural stone are also being used more and more in architectural design. Not only do organic, or “raw”, materials add warmth and natural aesthetic, but the wood and the stone blends seamlessly with the Andalucian scenery of rolling mountains and ocean views. Natural stone cladding adds an interesting rustic aesthetic, plus the uneven shapes of the stone mean that every property has a unique quality. In addition, stone ages well, retaining its natural beauty for decades to come. Stone is also a durable building material as it is resistant to the elements and pets, and doesn’t rot. Stone needs very little maintenance or upkeep, there is no need to paint or finish, and it is easy to clean. Instead, decades-old stone can be polished or restored easily and with little financial cost. If you consider the environment, stone has many greener characteristics. In production, it requires no energy, only for quarrying. It needs no additional substances during construction so it is a fantastic material if you want a greener, more environmental home. If you would like a softer, warmer aesthetic, you might consider the use of wood. Wooden pergolas and beams not only provide shade and structure for the property, but contrast beautifully with the typical white of a new build. While we have moved away from using wood in construction in recent years, the advantages of using wood still outweigh other materials, if you consider performance and overall environmental impact. Timber frames, posts and beam construction are mainly sourced from replenished forestry practices. A tree is cut down and is quickly replaced and nurtured to grow. Did you know that wood enhances the energy efficiency of a home? It has a higher insulation rating than steel as a result of its natural cellular structure, which means that your home needs less energy to maintain heating and cooling. Add to this the fact that it’s biodegradable and costs less to produce when compared to artificial steel and concrete, and there’s no reason not to consider using wood in the build of your new home. With the growing trend for organic materials, sustainable architecture is fast becoming the new normal, both on a local and on a global scale, as more and more homebuyers demand higher quality energy-efficient homes that won’t have a negative impact on the environment. Contrary to popular belief, sustainable energy buildings need not be expensive; innovative construction methods, new technologies and materials are available that can boost energy savings by up to 70 per cent. Incorporating energy-efficient features into a building can be challenging, as quite often the materials needed to build them can be fairly energy-intensive. However, with careful thought applied at each stage of a building’s life cycle, from the building design and material selection to construction methods and maintenance, clever choices throughout the design and build processes can significantly reduce energy consumption. Simple yet effective decisions such as choosing the right orientation to harness the sunshine for heat and the breeze for natural cooling can be part of the solution. Using locally sourced and re-cycled construction materials can reduce the carbon footprint of shipping and, overall, reduce the environmental impact. Atlas Group CC Atenea, Estepona Tel. Tell us more about how ID House came about and the services you offer… I was working in Marbella for a few years, mostly on location… managing construction sites, creating designs on the spot and shopping for clients in various local shops to obtain the right interiors. I missed a good base and, on top of that, my experience was that not many shops had actual stock and they mostly sold from catalogues. I decided to open my own interior design studio integrated into a furniture shop. At ID House we create full interior designs projects, not only based on furniture choices but with our own construction team we can fully reconstruct your house. We create designs together with our clients, providing Autocad plans and full project supervision. Apart from the construction part we offer a large collection of high-quality furniture and decoration items, mostly available from stock. With our own delivery service and installation team we provide a full service to furnish your home. How would you define the style in your showroom in Nueva Andalucía? We don’t have a particular style. With the diverse brands we offer, you can choose from a very luxurious high-gloss style to a more subtle easy living style - or a bright summery style. If I were to define our style, I would say it is comfortable with a significant designer’s touch, available at the best prices. You work with many prestigious brands... How do you select these companies? We offer between seven and 10 brands, and we selected these brands for their design features, delivery time, service and, of course, market demand. Brands we work closely with are Zuiver/Dutchbone, Lifestyle Home Collection, Riviera Maison and Versmissen. Recently we were fortunate to be selected by Eichholtz as exclusive distributor for the Marbella area and we have already dedicated one showroom to this fantastic brand. A lot has happened in a year… now you have a second showroom and an online store. Where do you see the future for ID House? The future is today. Opening the second showroom with outdoor furniture was required because clients kept asking for it. And the online store gives clients the opportunity to shop in the comfort of their home and have ID House furnish their holiday house while they are away. Hassle-free and clients have optimal time for enjoying their holidays, not losing time shopping around or staying at home for decorators. So continuing what we do now, with a lot of passion and many happy clients, is our goal for the future. In conclusion… We love the collaboration with Home & Lifestyle Magazine and your professionalism in presenting the amazing world of interior design and construction in the Marbella area. Of course, we invite all your readers to pay us a visit and see the different styles of collections we offer. Ctra. State-Of-The-Art Contemporary Residences … with “Smart Home” Connectivity Photos courtesy of Eric Kuster and Julia Roder

PALO ALTO AND PREFERRED PARTNER ILLUSION Much has changed in home design over the past decade. The Costa del Sol has been at the forefront of luxury living since well before the turn of the century, but cutting-edge automation developments in recent years have elevated the lifestyle within the home to even more impressive heights of intuitive “smartness”. In this respect, one of the premier residential projects leading the way on the Coast is Palo Alto, created by the celebrated architects Villarroel Torrico, just minutes from Marbella in an exclusive hilltop community in Ojén. This beautiful development enjoys uninterrupted views over the Mediterranean Sea and is described by its developers as “a place where like-minded people can appreciate the finer things in life, from horse-riding in the hills and relaxing in the infinity pool, to sipping cocktails on the terrace of your beautiful home”. It is also a place where residents can enjoy the absolute latest in advanced home technology - thanks to Palo Alto’s collaboration with Illusion. Established 13 years ago, and now a well-established benchmark in home automation, lighting and audio solutions, Illusion was an obvious choice for Palo Alto to collaborate with, providing homeowners with a system that effortlessly facilitates their life technologically. Illusion created a home automation package for Palo Alto properties, with options to have customised upgrades to boost, even more, the user’s experience through tailor-making the system to their specific preference. In these “smart homes”, you can control the ambience of your home, allowing you to manage the temperature, sound, light and even the blinds or curtains. The system operates through the Lutron App which can be controlled through a phone or tablet as well as other devices. NATURAL MODERN LIVING Set out to offer an authentic retreat lifestyle, Palo Alto morphs perfectly into the countryside, surrounded by the mountains of the Sierra de Las Nieves natural park. A network of trails and woodland walks provides a spectacular setting for outdoor exercise with breath-taking sea views. The area is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna, includ-

ing the pinsapo, the majestic Spanish fir from which Palo Alto derives its name. On entering the development, all needs are well taken care of. Palo Alto’s Gate Building is not only set up for 24-hour security and entrance surveillance, but also offers a concierge service helping with everything from reservations and airport pick-ups to dry cleaning, as well as a kids’ club, convenience store, bike storage, postal services, and a rental and management facility. As the developers note, “We’ve thought of everything, so you don’t have to.” Palo Alto will also feature the first Vivali® – a global connection of high-end apartments for travel-savvy professionals who make the entire world their office - incorporating a workspace open to Palo Alto residents. In addition, it will have one of the finest health clubs in Marbella, with gym, indoor pool, fitness studio and rooftop restaurant. There will be a five-star hotel on site with 80 rooms and 40 managed villas, meeting space, outdoor pool, spa, business centre and retail area. Other top amenities will include a farmer’s market, a social club, an equestrian village with stabling and pastureland, and Lagoon Village, a series of tranquil lakes “which invite you to relax, unwind and reflect, with trails for walking and jogging and quiet places to meditate and practise yoga, a place designed for you to connect with nature”. Palo Alto chose to collaborate with famous Dutch interior designer Eric Kuster for his unique metropolitan approach to luxury living that is stylishly homely and inviting. THE RESIDENTIAL OFFERINGS COMPRISE: Los Almendros - 90 stunning two and three-bedroom apartments with generous outdoor and indoor living spaces. Las Jacarandas - 60 impressive contemporary apartments, following the high-quality specification of Los Almendros. Exhilarating Sensory

Experience

with the New Lamborghini Spyder

170 MAY & JUNE 2019

Open Road HL63.indd 170

26/4/19 14:21

Combining the option of open-air driving with the prowess of the Huracán EVO’s evolutionary technologies, the latest Lamborghini Spyder was unveiled at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. The open-top car joins its coupé counterpart launched earlier this year, as the second model in the V10 Huracán EVO line-up, and adopts the next-generation vehicle dynamic control and aerodynamics developed for the coupé, with the 5.2 litre naturally-aspirated Lamborghini V10 engine uprated for a higher power output and incorporating Titanium intake valves. The new model features an electro-hydraulic, lightweight soft top for pure Spyder feeling, aerodynamic superiority maintained roof up or down, and an engine derived from Huracán Performante producing 640 hp and 600 Nm of torque, acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in 3.1 seconds and a top speed 325 km/h - plus a new infotainment system with advanced connectivity features “The Huracán EVO Spyder incorporates all the performance, next-generation vehicle control and aerodynamic features of the EVO coupé,” says Automobili Lamborghini chairman and CEO Stefano Domenicali, “with its own unique personality and a driving excitement that only an open-top car can offer.

“The Spyder continues the Huracán EVO’s evolutionary charge: extremely easy to drive while excelling as a highly responsive, fun super sports car. Particularly with the roof open, the emotive sound of the naturally aspirated engine and the refined, lightweight exhaust system take the sensory experience to a new level.” Rear-wheel steering and a four-wheel torque vectoring system are controlled centrally by Lamborghini Dinamica Veicolo Integrata (LDVI): the Central Processing Unit integrating and controlling every aspect of the car’s set-up and dynamic behaviour, anticipating the next move and needs of the driver and interpreting this through a “feed forward logic”. Processing data in real time, the LDVI system monitors and analyses external conditions through its active suspension and all-wheel drive. According to Automobili Lamborghini, it also recognises the driver’s intentions through steering wheel, braking, acceleration, and gear and driving mode selected. “Precise inputs are given to the vehicle dynamic system, creating a superagile and responsive car with unparalleled level of control: the car doesn’t just react, but predicts the best driving set-up for the next moment.”

Driving the Huracán EVO Spyder is “as refined or exciting as the occupants desire”. The preferred driving mode is selected via the ANIMA system, with STRADA especially calibrated via the LDVI system for road-driving comfort. “In SPORT it adopts a fun and exciting persona, with the ability to drift. In CORSA the Huracán EVO Spyder demonstrates its Performante heritage: race-track ready and exhilarating, for the most extreme driving environments.“ The aerodynamic superiority of the Huracán EVO is continued with the Spyder. With roof either up or down, the aerodynamic competency of the EVO Spyder, with more than five times the downforce and efficiency of the original Huracán Spyder, “sustains not only the most dynamic handling and performance but the comfort of the occupants. Cabin airflow is minimised and the occupants assured a quiet cockpit environment.” The Huracán EVO Spyder is presented in Verde Selvans: an iconic new Lamborghini four-layer green, and one of an enhanced range of colours and trims available for the Huracán EVO coupé and Spyder. Interior options include new EVO trim in Alcantara and leather mix, with stitching and trim details to match the body tone. Several style packages are offered, as well as lightweight materials such as Carbon Forged Composite and Lamborghini’s patented Carbon Skin. The new 8.4” HMI touchscreen, located in the centre console just above the start button, puts connectivity at the driver’s fingertips, with multi-finger gesture control. Governing car functions including seats, climate and the status of the LDVI system in real-time, it also puts all infotainment, such as Apple CarPlay with smartphone integration, at the cabin occupants’ disposal. A multimedia system incorporates connected navigation and entertainment including web radio and video player, with the intuitive interface enabling voice commands.

A la carte ··· MAX BEACH

Stunning Beachside Setting and Excellent Service

Max Beach has reopened its doors after an ownership-takeover and yet another reform. Now owned by one the Coast’s leading restaurant groups, Metro Group, Max Beach has been given a new lease of life, offering excellent service and already making it a newly popular hangout in the Mijas area. Max Beach has a number of fine strings to its bow, with an air-conditioned indoor restaurant and a connecting large outdoor terrace that looks over the pool area and directly to the sea. There is a pool bar area for more casual dining and a poolside lounging area, as well as their new Max Fitness gymnasium.

The restaurant offers breakfast, lunch and dinner, so guests can dine there at any time of the day. The menu is extensive, covering a wide range of international dishes serving everything from sushi, pizza, pasta and paella to salads, fish and meat. On our latest visit, we found the prices to be very reasonable, as all the dishes we saw had been creatively put together using high-quality ingredients on beautiful tableware. To kick off the lunch, we chose the Max Grand Sushi Platter, which arrived with every kind of sushi you can imagine - and dry ice smouldering in the cen-

tre of the plate making it a real showstopper. It could have served three people quite easily. For our main courses we chose the Max Del Mar: sea bass, scallops, king prawns, clams, stone-cooked mussels and baby potatoes served in a novel mini saucepan with all elements perfectly cooked. We also ordered the char-grilled rib-eye, which was impressively succulent and served with crunchy French fries – a dish definitely recommended for meat lovers as the steak was of an excellent quality. We found the service to be very attentive without being overbearing. The staff offered us useful suggestions on the menu, were extremely polite and seemed genuinely happy to work there. Down by the pool area their resident DJ, Aaron Phillip, played music that created a buzzy and upbeat ambience throughout the venue. Later there was live entertainment, so Max Beach seems to have covered everything to ensure you have a thoroughly enjoyable dining/poolside experience. In the late evenings, Max Beach plans to launch Max Live, which will offer live music by local and international artists for the ultimate night out. By the 25-metre saltwater infinity pool, guests can enjoy a bottle of champagne plus snacks from the Sea Snack Menu, with exquisite cocktails and an extensive wine list. There are various bed options, accommodating individual guests, couples or groups who want to lounge by the sea, or pool - or in a more private area. Building Bridges

in Rioja

By AJ Linn

180 MAY & JUNE 2019

Cuisine HL63.indd 180

26/4/19 14:35

Making wine is relatively easy. Just press some grapes and wait. Everything else turns around this. Or does it? Go back a moment to when the vines are first planted. What is the ideal soil for the grape variety we want to grow? How should the vines be set up: bush or trellis? Are we going to blend more than one grape or do we stick to the classic native of the region? Actually, making wine is all about making choices – probably the same as any business. But let’s simplify it: assuming our wine is good and there are no quality issues, who will buy it? This is the pertinent question. Regrettably no wine writer or wine historian has bothered to keep a record of the failures. There was the La Mancha red that cost a small fortune and was supposedly consumed by Spain’s royal household on a daily basis. That was popular for as long as it took customers to realise they were paying 10 times as much as they needed to on the basis of a statement that could never be confirmed or denied. Etc, etc… Which is why the recent history of Rioja is still open to various interpretations. There are those who maintain that the traditional classic style has disappeared, to be replaced by the “new generation” wines. In a phrase, out with the large casks of old American oak and in with the smaller French-oak barrels that produce wines of darker colour and fuller flavours, once much loved by serial wine-scorer Robert Parker. What is a demonstrable fact is that Rioja is such a large area, with tens of hundreds of winemakers, that there is room for practically any persuasion to exist and any experiment to be carried out, without upsetting the region’s general status-quo. What is certain is that no producer can ignore progress, however small the production of the bodega may be, and whether or not there is a market outside the immediate area. There is no shortage of possibilities. Factors such as the

significance of terroir, cold maceration, biodynamics, micro oxygenation, barrel sources, etc., are all movable feasts to be taken into consideration. “Progress” has occasionally caused some near disasters, but overall it would be hard to make a case based on today’s wines not being as good as those of 20 or 30 years ago. What makes Rioja special and different from other Spanish regions is that the styles we now consider classic were at some time in the past looked on as modernistic. However, the journey has not been an easy one, and it is interesting that the country’s two oldest regions, Jerez and Rioja, fell into the same trap. During the 1970s, and due to ever-increasing demand from mainly overseas markets, new vineyards were established (in Rioja many of the oldest vines were uprooted and disastrously scrapped), to be planted with higher-production vines that did not deliver the quality of their predecessors. Fortunately there were sufficient classic bodegas determined to maintain quality at any cost, notably Tondonia, La Rioja Alta, CVNE and others. The new arrivals (back then) like Muga, Contino and Martinez Bujanda, although perhaps not so enthusiastic about the established rules dictated decades earlier by the regulating council (Consejo Regulador), played by the rules, while at the same time working on what would become new references for wines made with hitherto-unknown grape varieties, such as Graciano, while continuing to work on developing new types of wine. The Rioja Vega range seems to have steered an intelligent course and got things about right, starting with the singular advantage of the name. Only bodegas that used the word Rioja in their title prior to the establishment of the regulating council were permitted to continue to do so, and there are very few examples. The 130-year old Rioja Vega stable now houses other famous names, including Principe de Viana, Albet and Clunia, all producing quality wines. With an ace lady winemaker, Esperanza Elías, at the helm, this bodega offers one of the most interesting, and value-for-money, selections of Riojas on the market today. For example, white Rioja wines using the Tempranillo grape are almost unheard of. The excellent example from Rioja Vega costs €12. The red Edición Tempranillos can be bought for €12, and the award-winning Edición Limitada 2016 (Garnacha 75 per cent, Tempranillo 25 per cent) costs less than €10. The Gran Reserva 2009 is a snip at €17, and the recently-released new Rioja Vega Venta Jalón Reserva 2014, also notable for its old-vine Graciano blended with Tempranillo, will be an overall winner The winery’s Rioja Vega 135 Aniversario Reserva 2011 was recently voted by Harpers Wine as the best Rioja. It is only made once every five years and is worth the €34 euros price tag (Birdie Wines).

Research Pinpoints Positive Benefits for the Elderly Medical Minutes by John Schieszer

MUSHROOMS MAY HAVE HIDDEN BRAIN BENEFIT Researchers are reporting that older adults who consume more than two standard portions of mushrooms weekly may have 50 per cent reduced odds of having mild cognitive impairment (MCI). A six-year study, led by assistant professor Lei Feng from the National University of Singapore, found that seniors who ate more than 300 grams of cooked mushrooms a week were half as likely to have MCI. A portion was defined as three-quarters of a cup of cooked mushrooms with an average weight of around 150 grams. Two portions would be equivalent to approximately half a plate. While the portion sizes act as a guideline, it was shown that even one small portion of mushrooms a week may still be beneficial

to reduce chances of MCI. “This correlation is surprising and encouraging. It seems that a commonly available single ingredient could have a dramatic effect on cognitive decline,” said Feng. The six-year study, which was conducted from 2011 to 2017, collected data from more than 600 Chinese seniors over the age of 60 living in Singapore. Six commonly consumed mushrooms in Singapore were referenced in the study. They were golden, oyster, shiitake and white button mushrooms, as well as dried and canned mushrooms. However, it is likely that other mushrooms not referenced would also have beneficial effects. The researchers believe the reason for the reduced prevalence of MCI in mushroom eaters may be due to a specific compound called ergothioneine. It is a unique antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties.

EXERCISE ABILITY MAY DETERMINE LIFESPAN A new study is suggesting that higher fitness levels may determine a longer lifespan after age 70. Researchers found that, among people over age 70, physical fitness was a much better predictor of survival than the number of traditional cardiovascular risk factors. The findings, which were presented at the American College of Cardiology’s 68th Annual Scientific Session, suggest doctors can get a better picture of older patients’ health by looking at how fit they are, rather than how many cardiovascular risk factors they have. “We found fitness is an extremely strong risk predictor of survival in the older age group; that is, regardless of whether you are otherwise healthy or have cardiovascular risk factors, being more fit means you’re more likely to live longer than someone who is less fit,” said study investigator Dr. Seamus P. Whelton, who is an assistant professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore (Maryland). Cardiovascular risk factors help guide decisions about preventive measures and medications. Previous studies have shown that quitting smoking and controlling blood pressure and cholesterol were important heart disease risk factors. However, most studies of cardiovascular risk factors have focused on middle-aged people, leaving a knowledge gap regarding the importance of these risk factors in older people, said Dr. Whelton. The team analysed medical records from more than 6,500 people aged 70 years and older who underwent an exercise stress test between 1991 and 2009. They assessed fitness based on patients’ performance during the exercise stress test, which required patients to exercise on a treadmill as hard as they could. On average, participants were 75 years old when they underwent the stress test. Researchers tracked the patients for an average of just under 10 years, during which time 39 per cent of them died. Over this period, the researchers found higher fitness was associated with significantly increased rates of survival. The most fit individuals were more than twice as likely to be alive 10 years later compared with the least fit individuals.

Top Tips

for Good Brain Health Physiotherapy lecturer and counsellor Rachel Garrod can be contacted at: Tel. (+34) 652 281 122 rachelgarrod1@gmail.com

Living in Spain, especially for those of us fortunate to be on the Costa del Sol, is undoubtedly good for our health. The warm sunny days, numerous opportunities for outdoor activities and availability of a healthy Mediterranean diet are all factors known to benefit our health. But did you know that many of these aspects also contribute to keeping our brains young? Evidence suggests that challenging our brain can have positive effects on brain “reserve” – the brain’s extra capacity. In particular, learning a new task in older age can help brain function. This might be musical, learning to play a new instrument or joining a choir for instance, or linguistic such as learning a new language. So even if, like me, languages don´t come easily to you, remember that by practising and trying to speak another language you are doing your brain a great favour. There’s good evidence now that inflammation in the body contributes to ageing and declines in cognition. Inflammation is exacerbated by stress so learning to properly relax is an important component of brain health.

A 2018 study of mindfulness and meditation in 34 adults showed benefits in terms of memory and verbal fluency. Mindfulness and meditation also have benefits in terms of how we manage stress with people showing a reduced stress response after training. Another great thing for your brain is to be socially active; engaging, maintaining and working at friendships and close relationships is strongly associated with a reduced risk of dementia and cognitive decline. But don’t go overboard on the alcohol when socialising; unfortunately this one is a definite no for brain health. And, of course, we know that exercise is important for general health – but it is also essential for brain health. Even moderate exercise such as walking, cycling or swimming helps, probably by boosting blood flow to the brain and stimulating development of new neurones from the hippocampus (the part of the brain responsible for memories). If you want help to be more active or learn some effective relaxation techniques, please do get in touch. We can all do more of what is good for us!

Guggenheim Museum and Tate Modern

Spring-Summer Shows …from Bilbao to London

Centred on stark and incisive language, Jenny Holzer’s art addresses such fundamental elements of human existence as power, violence, belief, memory, love, sex and killing. Until 9 September in Bilbao, visitors will be able to encounter Holzer’s reflections and ideas presented through a diverse range of installations made especially for the Guggenheim Museum. According to the organisers, “The artist’s aim is to engage the public by creating evocative spaces that ask viewers to consider and potentially define their positions on contentious issues including the global refugee crisis, violence against women, and systemic abuses of power… ‘Jenny Holzer: Thing Indescribable’ is

a survey of work by one of the most outstanding artists of our time. “The reflections, ideas, arguments and sorrows that Holzer has articulated over a career of more than 40 years (are) presented in a variety of distinct installations, each with an evocative social dimension. Her medium - whether emblazoned on a T-shirt, a plaque, a painting or an LED sign - is language. Distributing text in public space is an integral aspect of her work, starting in the 1970s with posters covertly pasted throughout New York City and continuing in her more recent light projections onto landscape and architecture.” www.guggenheim-bilbao.es

Meanwhile, in London until 9 June, the Tate Modern is staging a major exhibition of the work of pioneering artist Dorothea Tanning (1910-2012). The first ever to span Tanning’s seven-decade career, note the organisers, it follows the story of Tanning’s life and work, from her influential first encounters with Surrealism in New York in the 1930s through to her later years as a painter, poet and writer. “With a selection of 100 works, from her early enigmatic paintings to her ballet designs, uncanny stuffed textile sculptures, installations and large-scale late work, the exhibition explores how Tanning expanded the language of Surrealism. “In 1946, she married Max Ernst and her work from this time investigated domestic spaces, combining the familiar with the strange, exploring desire and sexuality. In the mid-1960s Tanning used her sewing machine to make highly original ‘soft’ sculptures at the centre of the exhibition. These hand-crafted, anthropomorphic forms, in between bodies and objects, inspired Surrealist sculptors as well as key contemporary figures such as Louise Bourgeois or Sarah Lucas.” www.tate.org.uk

Gregory Couderc

Improving Your Fitness and Lifestyle

We all want to look great for the summer, but to look good we also have to be healthy, according to Gregory Couderc. The Parisian personal fitness coach, who gained his qualifications in both France and the USA and now lives on the Costa del Sol, adopts the approach of teaching people how to live a healthier life not through just exercise and diet but also with their mental attitude. As each client has their own individual needs, Gregory trains people in different ways in order to suit their particular requirements, creating a tailor-made program just for them. “Being healthy is not just about exercise,” he says. “It has to be a way of life, and this is the biggest challenge for people when they start out. I teach people how to achieve this lifestyle as a long-term plan.” Tel. (+34) 622 400 055 grcouderc@wanadoo.fr

Local Property Tax in Spain

The Impuesto Sobre Bienes (IBI) is a tax framed within the local Spanish tax system. Its management is shared between the national administration and town councils, and the amount is collected by town halls for properties in their respective municipalities. It has been in force since 1 January 1990. Taxpayers subject to this tax in Spain are all individual and legal entities and other entities such as communities of properties or civil societies that hold ownership of real estate of a rustic or urban nature. The rateable value is objectively determined from data provided by the Real Estate Registry (Catastro), and it is related to the rateable value of the land and building. The valuation criteria needs to take into account established rules such as the rateable value not exceeding the market value, as the latter is the most likely price for which a property could be sold between independent parties. Therefore, all Spanish real estate properties in each municipality are included in a census and have an assigned value and identification number. Accrual of the tax occurs on the first day of the tax period that coincides with the calendar year. Management of this tax consists of two phases: 1 Property management – management of the data and documentation. 2 Tax management – qualification and tax collection.

The calculation and amount due to be paid by each property in Spain is provided by the town hall in the municipally where the property is located. The town hall normally informs owners by letter, which is sent to each property approximately one month prior to the payment period. Be aware that not receiving the letter does not exempt the owner from the responsibility of paying by the due date. Late payments are sanctioned and interest is charged. Town halls in Spain provide you with the alternative of paying by annual direct debit (some even offer a small discount). In this case, the tax will be charged directly to your bank account, but you must ensure you have enough funds in the account to cover the payment on its due date, as lack of payment will immediately cancel all future payments and you will need to restore the direct debit and issue the payment before the last payment date to avoid sanctions for late payment. The date when rates in Spain are due and the number of instalments, if any are available, varies from one town hall to another, although it is usually the months of September, October and November. As already mentioned, it is the owner’s responsibility to be aware when this tax is due in their municipally.
