Editorial After Milan’s trend-setting Salone del Mobile in April, the international home décor and design spotlight remains focused on Europe this autumn. The agenda is highlighted by the second annual Paris edition of Maison & Objet (6-10 September), coinciding with Paris Design Week (5-14 September). As to be expected at this time of the year (at least in the northern hemisphere), the outdoors will take centre-stage in France. One of the highlighted themes of Maison & Object will be “Sunday in the country… Having a rest or sharing a meal with family or friends, playing with the kids, tinkering around, doing some gardening, setting off on a bike ride, strolling around the countryside, or simply doing nothing at all. Long live weekends in the great outdoors.” Seasonal products and trends will be showcased in four dedicated spaces: Share by François Delclaux – “new ideas shaping hospitality”; Care by Elizabeth Leriche – “how empathy is redefining design”; Art Living by François Bernard – “how art permeates the home”; and Work by Chantal Hamaide – “workplace design takes on a new domesticity”. The organisers also recommend that visitors take the time to explore the capital city’s creative and design heritage. “Under the theme ‘hybrid’, Paris Design Week takes over new cultural spaces this year and immerses the city in an effervescence of exhibits, parties and openair themed walks. A perfect occasion to (re)discover the city’s allure!” That same week (11-15 September) is Finland’s leading leading design, furniture, and interior decoration event, Habitare, highlighting latest trends from the Nordic regions. Held since 1970, Habitare’s theme for 2019 is Mindspaces, which “seeks to explore the spaces that exist between the material and the intangible, the real and the imaginary. This year’s theme will allow Habitare to present a visually powerful display with interactivity at its core – one in which visitors can participate, like characters in a story.” Then the action moves across the English Channel (and Baltic Sea) to the 17th edition of the London Design Festival (14-22 September), offering a programme of events and installations throughout the city. This year marks 11 years with the V&A as a collaborating partner and the official hub and, during the festival, the museum of art, design and performance will play host to a series of specially-commissioned projects by internationally-renowned designers. Finally, we return to Spain for the Feria Hábitat Valencia (17-20 September), the country’s premier showcase of furniture and lighting, and a key link between the Ibero-American and European industries. Locally, Marbella Design Fair (4-15 July) will provide an early taste of exclusive brands’ decorative styles – with this second edition being presented with “a renewed philosophy and changes in its creative direction”.

Turn your bedroom into a tranquil oasis with organic materials, peaceful colours and good storage solutions. Technology for beds has advanced so much in recent years that there is no excuse for not enjoying the perfect night’s sleep with tilting beds and mattresses that adjust their own firmness to perfectly suit the user’s specific needs - all at the touch of a button. We all know that top-quality bed linen helps your skin breathe, giving you a more restful sleep, so investing in a good thread count is well worth the money. Window solutions to control the amount of sunlight entering the room are also key for an uninterrupted sleep so, whether you want a minimalistic look with blinds or a softer look with curtains, there are many options out there. Finally, dressing the bed with luxurious cushions or a throw is an effective way to finish off the look of the room.

Canevas Geo by Belgian designer Charlotte Lancelot for GAN is a warm and balanced composition, thanks to its wise combination of plains and colours. “The textures intermingle to create areas of different colour and density,” explains Lancelot. The effect achieved is reminiscent of the view of crop fields from an aerial perspective. It is easy to forget the floors when you consider redecorating a room. However, updating your floor can totally transform the living space - and often quite inexpensively. Flooring not only affects the acoustics of the room but also the whole ambience, making it cosier and more inviting. A flash of colour from a rug or carpet can instantly lift the room and can add a focus. Outdoor rugs can also make a stark outside space feel more welcoming, bringing what is usually indoor accessories out to the terrace or garden.

Kitchens with Style

Kitchens used to be solely a utilitarian space where food was prepared and very little else. Now the kitchen is the veritable beating heart of the home, serving as a social area where the household comes together. Technology has moved into the kitchen with clever gadgetry and appliances, together with interior design and innovative materials to make maintenance and durability a priority in a warm and inviting environment.

La Alquería is home to all the finest aspects of southern Spanish living: tucked away in a secure environment with 24-hour surveillance, it offers peace and privacy in the midst of stunning natural surroundings, with the glamorous and sophisticated attractions of Marbella city centre and Puerto Banús just a few minutes away. La Alquería has a local supermarket, international school and sport facilities, and is conveniently located close to the picturesque village of Benahavís, renowned for its gastronomy and the highest concentration of top-quality restaurants on the Costa del Sol. This property sits on one of the best plots in the residential estate, with spectacular panoramic views over the golf course, Mediterranean Sea and mountain backdrop. Entering the plot from the top side, there is a covered area for two cars and a main entrance on the first floor which is one of the villa’s most amazing features, offering breathtaking views through double-high-ceiling panoramic windows. The first floor gives access to the master bedroom and three more bedrooms, all with bathrooms en suite, plus access to the balconies and their magnificent views. The ground floor comprises a spacious open-plan liv-

ing and dining area, high ceilings (three metres), a fully-equipped island kitchen, a cloak room, and a guest bathroom and wardrobe. A double-sided gas fireplace with natural stone finishing separates the living and dining areas. Both areas are fitted with floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors, providing direct access to the covered terraces, infinity pool, landscaped garden and pergola area, again all with outstanding vistas. On the lower floor (basement) there is an attractive glass-separated wine cellar, a guest room with bathroom en suite, and a multi-functional room which can be easily converted into a gym, wellness facility, home cinema or extra bedrooms. This area also incorporates technical rooms with separate access from outside. Other cutting-edge features of the turnkey villa include individually controlled hot and cold air conditioning, underfloor heating, Sonos multi-room audio system, alarm system, and domotic units for home automation control of screens on the first floor and lighting. The villa is fully decorated with designer interiors, a beautiful blend of modern Italian pieces with warm fabrics, tree tables and elegant décor. TAKING THE STRESS OUT OF

Creating a New Home Environment Interview with Maria del Mar Florido and Ruth Torre from ID Latinia Photos by Julia Roder

Tell us more about how ID Latinia came about... We’re both Spanish, but have different professional backgrounds (Ruth’s in art direction and cinema, and Maria’s in fashion). For many years our respective jobs took us to different parts of the world, but eventually both of us felt like we wanted to return to Spain and settle back in our home town of Marbella. The transition to working with interiors felt totally natural, like an evolution from our previous occupations. We are very happy that we have now been established in the business and creating beautiful spaces for nearly 20 years. What services do you offer? ID Latinia offers a fully comprehensive bespoke interior design service. We handle everything from the initial consultation to find out what clients are hoping to achieve in terms of their living space design to the presentation of a final design concept, and beyond to the completion of an entire project, including renovations and construction work. We have a fantastic team of trusted professionals at our disposal: architects, builders, carpenters, upholsterers, kitchen and bathroom specialists, lighting experts and more… We advise on and supply everything including furniture, wall coverings, fabrics, lighting, flooring, carpets, garden furniture, etc. We collaborate with a wide range of designer brands, as well as having our in-house team of professionals so we can design and make bespoke pieces of furniture and upholstery. Our aim is to help you create your ideal home environment and make the whole experience as fun and stress-free as possible. In addition to this, we collaborate with developers advising on design features right from the construction stage till completion, as well as designing and furnishing their show flats. How do you normally approach a project? With each new interior design project we undertake, our objective is always the same: to meet and get to know our clients so we can under-

stand exactly what they’re trying to achieve, and then make their vision a reality, at the same time maximising their budget to create the most stylish and inspiring interior space possible. With this information, we will create plans and ambience/mood boards for each room. These images are used to reflect the kind of atmosphere we want to create. Typically, they include visual representations of distribution of the kind of furniture, lighting, carpets and fabrics we recommend. Also we provide an itemised list of al the items included in the proposal. Once the client selects the design to be implemented from our proposals, we take charge of absolutely everything. We pride ourselves on providing a very personal service. Our clients will liaise with the same person from start to finish, and our aim is that their experience is enjoyable and stress-free. Once the design/budget has been approved, we will do our upmost to ensure everything runs smoothly without bothering then at all. What is it you love most about your job? Honestly, everything. We are totally in love with what we do. We both feel blessed to have such a creative job, and coming to work every day is actually a pleasure. We get really excited seeing big design projects develop, especially if they involve major renovation work. Of course, the dedication, skill and sense of humour of our amazing team is key to making it a happy work environment. Most of all though, seeing the happy faces of our clients once we’ve completed a project is the best thing about what we do. Gardens HL64.indd 156

28/6/19 17:20

Of course, I mean vertical gardens. Definitions: A green wall is a wall partially or completely covered with greenery that includes a growing medium, such as soil, water or substrate. Most green walls include an integrated water delivery system. These green walls are also known as living walls or vertical gardens. It is also a convenient way for people who have limited space to enjoy the benefits of having plants somewhere in their homes. Don’t forget that this vertical wall is a great air purifier and you can change the plants all year round to suit yourself. There are dozens of ideas to use both inside and outside as to what and where you can use vertical planting. Make a complete herb garden with all your herbs growing in the same kind of pot, for unity, for example. Use pallets and these are twofold eco-friendly. 1. You will use something which would otherwise be thrown away, and 2. You will have so many ways to use them. They are incredibly versatile. Paint the pallets in different colours and then hang your plants or varnish the pallet to protect the wood, and keep it simple and let the flowers or plants give colour. A vertical pallet planter is easy to make. Also, you could use trellises: tie them firmly together or use them separately fixed to a wall, and make a stacked pot planter. Get five terracotta pots, decreasing in size, and a stout pole which will fit through the middle hole of each. Use the largest one first, fill with potting soil, fix the pole in it, put the next pot size in, over the pole and fill with soil, etc., until you reach the smallest and top pot. Then pop in your plants and in a very small space you have something both practical and pretty. You can break up the pallets, use the pieces of wood sanded down and fix them to a wall, and then fix the pots onto that. If you have a small patio, balcony or roof garden, make a hanging gutter garden. With a bit of work and some galvanised gutters, hooks and chains, they would be ready to fill and plant in an hour. Places selling bathroom furniture, like a staircase which leans against a wall, can be used perfectly well to stack smaller pots. There are specially designed trays where you can plant food thickly but, if you use this method, make sure that there is a strong wall behind it and the fasteners are strong enough to take the weight of the material. I saw a bottle herb vertical garden and the plastic bottles, of which there are billions, had a piece cut out of them, with holes poked through at the bottom for drainage, and were suspended on chains. You cannot grow huge plants form this system but you could have a flourishing herb garden AND be doing the planet a lot of good. If you prefer to make living walls and want an all-in-one system, then use Florafelt. These recycled nylon felt units come with easy-to-use pockets for root-wrapped plants. A built-in drip irrigation system runs along the top of the wall to water the pockets. Leftover water falls into a drain line at the bottom. PlantsOnWalls.com will take you right there. The same way that you would first prepare the soil in a “normal” garden applies, of course, to vertical ones. Make sure there is good drainage and good earth, spray your herbs with a mixture of crushed garlic cloves steeped in water for three days, don’t forget to spray under the leaves, and when you need to use them just give them a good rinse and you are off and running. If you can, get an irrigation system going - there is plenty of DYI information on the internet. If not, use the trusty watering can. Aquaponic towers can pump a mineral solution up the tower and drip it all over the roots of the plants. A succulent wall is really easy to do: they are cool and low-maintenance, and can be hung in the inside of a house as an attractive feature. All you have to do is mist the board from time to time. As you can see, there are dozens of ways to create your vertical wall. All of them good - it just depends on what you prefer. Have fun! Alia Babapulle. Interior and Exterior Designer Tel. Optimising Home Comforts with Adequate Glass Guardian Glass’s experts have offered a series of practical tips to help make our homes as comfortable as possible. “The clock is nine o’clock in the morning,” they say. “You are in the middle of a huge traffic jam in the centre of the city. Traffic and car horns barely let you advance. You only think of one thing: to get home. Often we live so fast-paced that we forget how important it is to live; to enjoy every moment and to build a pleasant, comfortable and full life.” Guardian Glass is a key business arm of Michiganbased Guardian Industries, one of the world’s major manufacturers of glass products. Their advice… 1. Illuminate your home and your life: Natural light is one of the greatest sources of well-being and health in the home. 2. Maintain the ideal temperature: If the window glass is adequate, it will allow in as much natural light as possible while maintaining adequate thermal insulation. 3. Always feel safe: Try to feel, as well as comfortable, safe and secure within your home. You must pay special attention to the most vulnerable points when it comes to intruders: doors and windows. 4. Limit noise pollution and enjoy the silence: The right glass in your windows, among other factors, can help you achieve more sound insulation in your spaces. 5. Commit to sustainability: Seek materials and resources for your home that are efficient and respect the environment. 6. Decoration also counts: The right glass in your windows can help protect your belongings, including furniture and art, from UV damage. www.guardian.com www.deventanasadentro.es

ALLURINGLY WARM TONES FOR A CUTTING-EDGE HOME SETTING

Bang & Olufsen’s Bronze Collection takes inspiration from the architectural and interior trends of using warm colours and contrasting materials. The limited edition range Bronze Collection has been created “to add alluring dark, naturally warm hues, character and even more vivid sound to the modern home”. According to Bang & Olufsen architects and designers Anne Mee Dybbroe Andersen and AnnaSophia Brune, “People are drawn to spaces and objects, where contrasts and details enhance each other. For the Bronze Collection speakers, we combined the earthy aluminium bronze tone, the epitome of warmth and timeless elegance, with bespoke multi-coloured wool yarn from Kvadrat and premium walnut wood. The bronze tone stays neutral from day to night, season to season and year to year – maintaining its elegance and splendour regardless of trends and changing fashions.” The Bronze Collection brings together the powerful Beoplay A9 floor speaker, Beoplay M5, Beosound 1 and Beosound 2 with 360-degree sound, as well as the Beosound Edge speaker, designed by Michael Anastassiades for Bang & Olufsen. TIMELESS DESIGN WITH A 21ST CENTURY AESTHETIC

The Spherina family dates to the roots of Architettura Sonora’s iconic Sphere, reworking and redesigning the shape and using new materials and revamped details. The result is a timeless, state-of-the-art speaker that combines high-end design with a meticulous aesthetic. The Spherina Air is an omnidirectional loudspeaker characterised by a dual concentric 6” transducer, with coaxial mid-woofer and tweeter to create a virtual point source and provide a uniform omnidirectional coverage over the vertical axis. The new Shine Line special edition was created using the ancient “gilding” technique, applying a thin layer of gold leaf over the concrete body. Architettura Sonora is available from Illusion in Urb. at Marbella Design Fair Interview with Erico Navazo IN PREPARATION FOR THE MARBELLA DESIGN FAIR - TO BE HELD IN THE PALACIO DE CONGRESOS IN MARBELLA FROM 4 TO 15 JULY - WE CAUGHT UP WITH VILLEROY & BOCH, ONE OF THE MAIN EXHIBITORS AT THE EVENT, TO TALK ABOUT THEIR COLLABORATION WITH AWARD-WINNING SPANISH DESIGNER ERICO NAVAZO… Tell us about the concept behind this space designed for Villeroy & Boch… Our creative objective has been to devise a hedonistic space, inspired by the Art Deco movement, using a palette of aquamarine and blueish green tones, in contrast to whites and blacks. What sensations or experience do you want to convey? We wanted to create a fresh and festive atmosphere for enjoying time in the bathroom, with the intention of transmitting to visitors such pleasant sensations as optimism and joy. What have been your main sources of inspiration? Pastel colours and a floral and aquatic style that is reminiscent of the swells of the Mediterranean Sea that bathe the Costa del Sol. What is it that you value most about Villeroy & Boch? Their commitment to design and quality, in addition to a constant spirit of evolution. What aspects of the brand (and products) do you most identify with? Its timeless elegance and how it is inspired by tradition. How would you define a Villeroy & Boch bathroom? Adaptable, versatile, elegant and top-quality. What are the leading bathroom trends for 2019? The use of natural materials such as wood and marble, presented in all their raw splendour and creating well-defined contrasts and silhouettes. What advice would you offer to readers wanting to optimise the space in their contemporary bathrooms? Install compact toilets, built-in taps, niches, non-profile screens and good lighting units. Define your ideal bathroom… My ideal bathroom would be one that is integrated into the bedroom and dressing room, with a large window overlooking a park or green environment, to create an area for relaxation and disconnection. Property Market Overview ···

REAL ESTATE REVOLUTION by Bynok

Bynok’s new business strategy will completely change the real estate market on the Costa del Sol: 100 per cent finance, exceptional projects at 40 per cent below the market price, unique designs and excellent quality finishes.

ESTEPONA IS THE NEW GOLDEN MILE OF THE COSTA DEL SOL… According to Bynok CEO Armando Gómez, who is currently concentrating on the company’s international expansion, this explains why many of Bynok’s new projects are focused on the Estepona area. “Estepona has many good plots with unique locations, and the town council is agile when dealing with the development of new projects, which encourages developers to focus on this area. Meanwhile, neighbouring areas such as Marbella don’t have the same agility, and suffer from a lack of plots for development, because of either location or urban administrative procedures. Currently Bynok is developing La Boladilla Resort, which comprises 101 villas and 276 apartments with magnificent sea views and all amenities conveniently at hand. In total, the project involves an investment of over €150 million. “It is one of the best plots remaining on the Costa del Sol for a major development, and where we are going to develop Las Gemas de Estepona, in the Guadalobón area, just in front of Hotel H10.” Bynok will invest €65 million on

the construction of over 100 villas with stunning views to Mediterranean Sea. The company’s business strategy is set to revolutionise the market and, according to Armando Gómez, establish it as the leading developer in the history of Spanish real estate. The company currently employs more than 100 people and has an annual growth rate of 25 per cent. In 2018, the Bynok began its international expansion and it has just presented a new brand, B8 Architecture, based in Dubai. The future of the company is focused not only on new investment opportunities in Spain but also on breaking into the international market. “In Spain it is becoming difficult to deliver really good projects and the reason is the lack of proper plots. Meanwhile, building possibilities abroad are unlimited. With its experience and background, Bynok is a highly competitive company in the overseas market.” Bynok plans to invest around €550 million by 2020 in various international projects in Africa, Oman and California, and other countries.

ESTEPONA IS THE EPICENTRE OF LUXURY DEVELOPMENTS… La Boladilla Resort is a luxury residential area comprising 101 villas and 276 apartments, situated in a privileged location between Marbella and Estepona. It is an exceptional setting, with magnificent natural surroundings and magnificent Mediterranean sea views. A completely private and secure complex with only one entrance/exit and all key comforts and luxuries available: tropical gardens, large swimming pools, private gym, café, mini-market, school and spa. Las Gemas de Estepona will be a luxury resort of over 100 villas, also with breathtaking views towards the Mediterranean Sea, Gibraltar and the African coastline. It is completely private, and just a short distance to Estepona’s main commercial areas, schools and sports facilities. An innovative design, excellent quality finishes, a privileged location and beautiful views are the key features of this project.

A REVOLUTIONARY STRATEGY In 2018, figures placed Bynok as the number one developer: 316 villas, 308 apartments, 230,000 square metres built and more than 71 architectural designs. In addition, customer services were improved by implementing new and innovative strategies, such as 100 per cent financing for Bynok projects and an integrated quality finishes system. In order to be able to boost quality without increasing costs, Bynok works directly with the major worldwide suppliers. The company has created its own brand of quality finishes (toilets, doors, switches, etc.), which facilitates lower costs and gives the company a significant advantage in being able to provide superior quality and unbeatable prices.

Bynok’s innovative strategy has meant a total revolution in the concept of real estate: developing and implementing a comprehensive management model in which all the “players” in this sphere - architects, builders, investors and end-customers - work in a totally coordinated way, guaranteeing a top-quality product, better costs and reduced project development schedules. Partnerships with like-minded professionals and investors have allowed Bynok to act in a completely different way, reducing all profit margins in different phases of a project development in order, says Armando Gómez, “to sell below the market price and still be able to maintain company profits and unbeatable margins of profitability for our investors”.

Think Green, Think Renewable How will EU regulations on renewable energy affect property in Spain?

Article supplied by Atlas Group

168 JULY & AUGUST 2019

Atlas Colunm HL64.indd 168

27/6/19 19:57

Climate change is one of the biggest issues affecting new building regulations - not only in Spain and Europe but worldwide - and the latest laws will affect everyone in some way, from residential to commercial and even existing buildings. The decisions reached at the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris by 25 global leaders (23 from EU countries) are now being felt. Mission Innovation was launched to accelerate the clean energy project, pushing research and innovation in order to make clean energy more available. The Breakthrough Energy Coalition was also formed to supply funds and to push through research and new technology on to the market. NATIONAL BUILDING REGULATIONS The EU Energy Performance of Building Directive lays out strict targets for the construction industry: all new buildings, including private homes, to be nearly zero energy buildings (NZEBs) by the end of 2020. For public buildings the target was last year (2018). Each country has drawn up a national plan outlining energy targets for different categories of buildings, which must be adhered to. WHAT IS A NEARLY ZERO ENERGY BUILDING? Nearly zero energy buildings (NZEBs) are high energy performance and low energy, mainly supplied by renewable sources. Good insulation, not included in older Spanish properties, orientation, double glazing and window placement are key characteristics. As is the practice of abstaining from using fossil fuels, using instead renewable energy sources such as solar,

hydro-electric, heat or wind pumps, or biomass burners. Mike Gregory, General Director of Atlas Group, explains… “Across the EU, much of the building stock is more than 50 years old, and it eats up around 40 per cent of energy consumption and releases 35 per cent of Co2 emissions. New technology means that this type of energy consumption isn’t necessary, so it is our responsibility to try to change it. “Contrary to popular belief, it is no more expensive to build a nearly zero energy home than a regular property. Yet the result can be much more pleasant to live in and the costs to run the property much lower. Atlas Group has been a vocal supporter of nearly zero energy builds and renewable energy solutions for many years, recognising the benefits of intelligent design for both the homeowner and the environment.”

Atlas Group CC Atenea, Estepona Tel. (+34) 951 272 140 www.atlas-group.es

HOW DOES THIS AFFECT YOUR NEW BUILD PROPERTY IN SPAIN? “If, like President Trump, you don’t believe in climate change or the need for renewable energy, it’s vital to understand the implications of these laws. In monetary terms alone, nearly carbon zero properties will be more valuable than older less energy efficient buildings in the future. “Energy certificates are compulsory for all properties available for sale or to rent, allowing buyers to compare performance, and savvy buyers are already moving towards energy efficient builds as a way of ‘saving the planet’, lower bills and taking advantage of tax incentives. “Greater energy efficiency in new homes is a win-win situation: ticking the box for helping to save the planet and saving money.”

KARE MARBELLA

Inspiring New Furniture Showroom in Marbella Photos: Julia Roder

How would you describe Kare’s position in the global market? Kare is an international brand with a wide range of products – more than 6,000 - including outstanding furniture, lighting and accessories. Our products are colourful and non-conformist. We have almost 40 years of experience and 100 shops worldwide, present in most major cities, and we attend all international furniture and design fairs and exhibitions. We are very fashion-orientated, and each year we renew about 1,000 of the 6,000 items in our assortment. In addition to furniture, we offer interior design for private homes, offices, bars and hotels. We have fully-furnished packages for apartments and villas, and we work with developers and real estate companies. Kare Design GmbH was founded in 1981 by Jürgen Reiter and Peter Schönhofen. As owners and managing partners they continue to manage the company to the present day. Tell us more about the showroom in Marbella… Even though our 300-square metre showroom is a good size for Marbella, we also stock a much wider range of products that are not necessarily presented in the showroom itself. Our display gives you a good idea of the design range, but our team is happy to take you through the entire range of products in our catalogues or on our website (www. kare-marbella.es). We also help our clients by offering them free room planning and 3D simulation, with our products tailor-made to their own houses; as well as a Kare App that is easy to download and can help a client to simulate how a Kare product will look inside their home using their mobile telephone screen. Why did you opt for this particular location? We chose the prestigious Golden Mile location because it is a reference point in Marbella and we believe the Oasis Business Centre is now the go-to destination for quality furniture in Marbella. It is also easy to locate, right by the main entrance, and parking available in front of the building with even more parking behind the centre. We are pleased that Kare choose to open its third showroom in Spain in Marbella, after Barcelona and Mallorca What is the concept behind Kare? The main concept of Kare is “anything but ordinary”. Our philosophy is to deliver excellent design products for a good price. We don’t just sell furniture - we display our products in a theatrical way that aims to inspire. Our store has different moods from rock star, retro style, soft glam to natural tones. As Peter Schönhofen, founder and CEO of Kare Design GmbH in Germany, says, “Extraordinary design gives emotional kicks and individual authenticity in our homes.”

What makes Kare stand-out from other companies? Our brand is different from the rest of the furniture providers in Marbella because, let’s be honest, many of the interior designs you see in properties here on the Coast are very neutral and bland but we believe a holiday home should be different – it should be exciting and lively. People choose to come to Marbella for excitement, and we believe our furniture can bring exactly that extra spark that your summer residence needs. Our furniture is both colourful and different, and it always reflects latest trends in interior design. What is more is that you get more style for your money. Similar designs are normally available at much higher prices, whereas in our shop we can promise you affordable design. What plans do you have for the future? We want very soon to be able to have readily-available furniture packages for our clients. Say a client bought an apartment today… we want to be able, in just a few hours, to furnish it completely after the client has chosen a full package that we keep in stock for this occasion. When you buy a holiday property… you want to move in right away and do not want to wait. In addition, we are here to provide our services to everybody, from our direct clients in the shop to all other partners: real estate agents, architects and designers, developers and project managers. We also want to work with customers from hotel, restaurant and bar businesses because we have a wide variety of table and seating options, plus fabulous decoration and unusual articles that can make these places unique, like our giant cats, dogs, horses, monkeys - you name it. Architects can find anything they are looking for in the one place. We have all the articles a house needs, from furniture to lights, carpets, mirrors and all possible accessories. However daring a project is, we are sure that a designer can find something in our range, because we cover so many themes, and all reflecting the latest trends. All our products are loaded in 3D and they can be used very easily in any design project. And last but not least, we have very good partnership conditions that we can offer to designers. Furthermore, we are working on excellent financial terms that allow developers to furnish properties without the need to pay the whole furniture package fully in advance. ETHNIC-SCANDINAVIAN Update for Spanish Villa

Centro Idea Crta. de Mijas, Km3.6 Mijas Tel. (+34) 635 546 360 info@zocohome.com www.zocohome.com

Located in Marbella’s prestigious Nueva Andalucía area, this traditional Spanish villa had a great framework, but its floor plan was unpractical and the finishes were dated. The owner contacted interior design firm Zoco Home to create and undertake a significant remodelling. “We interviewed the homeowner attentively,” explains Zoco Homes’ Johanna Weckström, “and worked with mood boards to obtain a clear picture of the client’s needs and what style they liked. It became apparent that they favoured Scandinavian simplicity with an ethnic touch. Then we guided the customer toward an earthy, handcrafted palette that would work well with the home’s existing vibe.”

The house is distributed over three floors, with extensive outdoor areas and seamless connections throughout the house. High ceilings and large windows create an overall spacious feel. The bright open-plan living, kitchen and dining space is the focal point of the property, where friends come together for languid dinners and lingering conversations. “We have highlighted a laid-back cosy atmosphere and craftsmanship,” says Johanna Weckström, “with carefully chosen materials, handmade furnitures and unique elements, giving the right warm mood to this beautiful house.”

Bugatti Veyron

How a Legend Was Born

176 JULY & AUGUST 2019

Open Road HL64.indd 176

27/6/19 20:06

It is now nearly 20 years since Bugatti reinvented the hyper sports car segment with the Veyron. The new model was unveiled in 2000 with four turbochargers, over 1,000 PS and speeds in excess of 400 km/h. It was the relaunched French luxury brand’s first series production car for decades, and the term super sports car barely seemed adequate to describe it. “Thanks to the Veyron,” explains Bugatti president Stephan Winkelmann, “Bugatti catapulted itself into a new dimension. We set benchmarks around 20 years ago with the first luxury hyper sports car and we are proud of that to this day. The Veyron continues to be a car of superlatives: it broke several speed records and redefined what outstanding automotive engineering can do.” The hyper sports car’s name dates to French racing driver Pierre Veyron, who was active for Bugatti between 1933 and 1953 in roles including test driver and development engineer. In 1939 he won the 24 Hours of Le Mans with fellow French racing driver Jean-Pierre Wimille in a Bugatti Type 57C Tank. Production of the Veyron started in 2005 at the newlybuilt workshop in Molsheim (Alsace). “With the Veyron,” adds Stephan Winkelmann, “Bugatti brought vehicle production back to France where our luxury brand was established 110 years ago and where it belongs.” The newly developed 16-cylinder engine, with a capacity of 8.0 litres, is at the heart of the Veyron. It generates a torque of 1,250 newton metres between 2,200 and 5,000 rpm, and the unit features four turbochargers. It initially generated 736 kW/1,001 PS at 6,000 rpm, accelerating the vehicle from zero to 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds and propelling it to 200 km/h within 7.3 seconds - with a top speed of 407 km/h. The Veyron thus became the world’s fastest series-production sports car at its production launch. In 2010, the Veyron Super Sport, generating 883 kW/1,200 PS, set a

Open Road ···

further speed record at 431 km/h. To achieve this, it is necessary to activate a second key, the “Speed Key”. When this is activated, the Veyron is lowered to a V-shape, the rear wing is adjusted and the diffuser flaps are closed to lower the drag. At the time, these levels of power, sporty flair and ultra-luxury with a vehicle that was 4.46 metres long were quite innovative. As Bugatti’s engineers note, at the start of development, they struggled to master the tough and new challenges resulting from the powerful engine and high speeds beyond 400 km/h. “It took a supplier around five years just to develop a tyre that was able to guarantee the required speed of over 400 km/h. Ten radiators keep the unit and its add-on parts within a pleasant temperature range. A seven-speed, dual clutch gearbox (DSG) distributes the force to the vehicle’s four wheels, while all-wheel drive and sophisticated aerodynamics guarantee sufficient traction at all speeds. Carbon-ceramic brake discs and an air brake make sure the vehicle decelerates safely.” And the result? Winkelmann says he is sure that the Veyron ”is not only incredibly powerful and fast, but also absolutely suitable for everyday use. Having been able to balance these two extremes is unique within the automotive world.”

As part of the Veyron creative process, Veyron brought back the tradition of coachbuilding, with other variants such as the Grand Sport roadster, the Super Sport and the Grand Sport Vitesse being developed during production. The Veyron Super Sport generates 1,200 PS and reaches speeds of up to 431 km/h, which is considered to be a world record. The range was complemented by around 30 exclusive special models including the Pur Sang, Pegaso, Fbg par Hermes, Bleu Centenaire and Sang Noir. One thing that all models have in common, say the Bugatti engineering team, “is the fact that, in addition to the incredible development of power, their perfection lies in how easy they are to drive and in the high standard to which they have been produced”. For Winkelmann, the Veyron is quite simply “a work of art on wheels… its materials meet top quality standards and the quality of finishing is still one of a kind to this day”. Until 2015, workers crafted the Veyron in Molsheim by hand: 450 customised vehicles were produced at the workshop in Alsace, each costing a minimum of €1.16 million - with some models almost €3 million (excluding tax). Its successor was the Chiron1, another modern-day hyper sports car that is completely in tune with Bugatti’s stellar traditions.

Spanish Summer Road Trip

with Vincci Hotels

180 JULY & AUGUST 2019

Travel HL64.indd 180

27/6/19 20:07

Many holidaymakers opt for trips closer to home during the hot European summer months, especially in Spain with such a diverse range of destinations - from north to south and east to west. This year, we take a journey with Vincci Hotels, starting at two of their flagship Costa del Sol establishments, in Marbella and Málaga, and moving on to Madrid, Barcelona and Bilbao then across the border into Portugal (Oporto). According to Vincci, it is not only about enjoying a holiday but “even more about feeling and experiencing summer… when the trip becomes a personal adventure”. To that end, the chain provides different experiences at its nearly 40 hotels throughout Spain, Portugal and Tunisia. Specifically for our 2019 summer road trip, “Guests and visitors can stay in an old fish market in Porto or on the Arab wall of Málaga, sleep in the emblematic Carrión building in Madrid behind the neon lights of the popular Schweppes sign on Gran Vía, stroll through a hotel-museum in Barcelona with works by avantgarde artists, live an intense summer in Marbella, or stay conveniently close to Bilbao’s renowned Guggenheim Museum.” BEACH CLUB ESTRELLA DEL MAR (MARBELLA) Located on the edge of the “Golden Beach”, the hotel offers a refreshing summer mix of sea breezes, fine sand, chilled-out relaxation under the sun, the finest Mediterranean cuisine, and sumptuous cocktails at sunset, as well as the 2,500-metre Nammu Áreas Spa offering beauty treatments, massages and activities including yoga and pilates. POSADA DEL PATIO (MÁLAGA) One of Málaga city’s venerable architectural gems is a 14th century Arab wall, officially documented as an “Asset of Cultural Interest”. In the hotel interior is the best-preserved and longest extension of the wall, and the only one that can be visited on both sides, with guests able to walk along the city’s ancient path. CAPITOL (MADRID) The hotel was considered to be revolutionary in the 1930s for its art deco style, and today it retains one of the few remaining rationalist courtyards in Madrid. Through its corridors, guests can breathe history and view the building’s original plans. It also is has a cinema in the lower area. BIT (BARCELONA) This hotel-museum is located in a newly created building, highlighted by a comprehensive decorative project led by interior designer Jaime Beriestain, with white and bright spaces predominating and faithfully reflecting the clarity of the Mediterranean light, combined with modern design details. CONSULADO (BILBAO) Integrated into this hotel’s cosmopolitan environment is an architectural design created to resemble a sailboat travelling upstream and moored in front of the Guggenheim Museum. Its indoor spaces feature natural materials, especially wood, adding a cosy and relaxing touch to the décor. PORTO (OPORTO, PORTUGAL) This hotel is located in one of Oporto’s historic buildings, the former city fish market, which was built in the 1930s by architect Januário Godinho, and was declared a “Building of Public Interest” in 1977 - a remarkable example of modern industrial architecture in the picturesque Portuguese city.

INAUGURATION OF

FIRST OUTDOOR SKYDIVING SIMULATOR IN SPAIN

The Costa del Sol’s diverse array of tourist attractions has been further boosted with the official opening of Fly4Real in Campillos. Located at KartCenter Campillos, the outdoor simulator is the first of its kind in Spain. Thrill-seekers can enjoy a double shot of adrenaline by combining skydiving with karting at Andalucía’s longest kart track. The official opening event was held in June, but the skydiving simulator has been operating since the beginning of May, offering residents and tourists the opportunity of experiencing the thrill of flying in complete safety, according to Fly4Real. “This is also a very special simulator, as it is the very one which Tom Cruise used to train for his skydiving stunts in the film Mission Impossible: Fallout, before it came to Spain. A skydiving simulator allows visitors to fly on a column of air, without a parachute. It simulates the free-fall portion of a skydive, and is an addictive, exciting and thrilling experience. “It’s the perfect way to find out what skydiving feels like without jumping from an aeroplane. Suitable for all the family, people can fly from the age of five to 95. It is also excellent for companies to reward their employees with an exciting and unique team-building experience.”

Fly4Real’s professional instructors guide visitors through every moment of their flight, teaching them how to fly and how to perform stunts and tricks. After cutting the ribbon to formally open the attraction, Campillos mayor Francisco Guerrero said the town hall was “very clear from the outset that we must support this initiative and bring this project to our area. For Campillos it is essential to improve our tourist offering and this represents a big achievement for our region. We must continue to adapt to attract these kinds of activities, which offer alternative leisure options for our residents, tourists and visitors of all types and ages. Campillos is proud to have one of the best kart circuits in Europe and the only outdoor skydiving simulator in Spain.” Picture top right ( from left): Fly4Real director Rubio Carmona Antonio, Campillos mayor Francisco Guerrero, sports councillor Miguel Ángel Herrera, deputy mayor Maria Antonia Dominguez and Fly4Real’s managing director Allan Hewitt (Photo: ParaMedia) Tickets can be booked online at www.fly-4-real.com, and there is transport available from various points along the Costa del Sol.

SOUTH BEACH

A CHIC NEW DÉCOR by Interior Design Company ID House Photos by Julia Roder

South Beach in El Rosario has been a popular hangout for a discerning international crowd for several years, and now it has been given an extra touch of style, thanks to the creative skills of interior designer Ilze Dombrovska from ID House. Its relaxed unpretentious ambience has drawn people who steer away from the well-known glitzy beach clubs and rustic typically Spanish “chiringuitos” and instead prefer to while away their days enjoying good-quality cocktails and tasty dishes tailored for the beach, whilst relaxing on one of their beautiful Balinese sunbeds that won’t break the bank. Home & Lifestyle Magazine went to visit South Beach to check out the scene…

On meeting the charismatic but down-to-earth Dutch owner Michel, we immediately get a feel for how South Beach is going to be. He greets us with a warm smile, joking with a relaxed aura about him. His personality transcends throughout the venue, which immediately puts you at ease and makes you feel welcome. This is also relevant to the staff, who vary in nationality and age, are eager to help and appear extremely happy in their work. The menu includes many healthy options but it is also well varied to suit all tastes. They like to concentrate on what they call “street food”, which seems to represent the most popular dishes on the menu – wraps, club sandwiches,

salads and the like. Where many beach clubs focus solely on the cuisine, South Beach are highly into their cocktails – all freshly made using natural ingredients. There are many sunbeds available, with their largest ones (Balinese-style) comfortably fitting three adults and coming with a sheet, pillow, towels, water and fruit platter for the very reasonable price of just €50. Booking a bed is highly recommended and the best way to do this is either by phone or via their social media channels. There is no denying that this part of the coast is home to the best beaches, with hardly any stones and a shallow shoreline allowing you to walk out into the ocean for quite some distance – making it not only aesthetically beautiful but also safe. ID House certainly focused on decorative details that provide a chic but casual beach experience. There are many features to the decoration to constantly remind you that you are by the sea, highlighted by lampshades shaped as shells, ornamental flamingos, aqua-coloured parasols and vases, and glistening deep-blue plant pots. The natural theme is followed through with recycled wooden tables and pastel-coloured wooden doors that open up the restaurant to the panoramic view of a beach where you will also find parasols made from natural raffia. At South Beach they have unquestionably achieved their goal of offering a relaxing and sophisticated but unpretentious beach experience that very few beach clubs can match, thanks to a well thought-out decoration, excellent menu, and friendly and efficient staff in an idyllic stretch of beach just on the outskirts of Marbella. Food and Wine Marriage … Opportunity Knocked By AJ Linn

186 JULY & AUGUST 2019

Cuisine HL64.indd 186

27/6/19 20:20

The matter of pairing wine with food is, in any sensible person’s opinion, a pretentious waste of time, and many thousands of words have been written in many languages that endorse this view. The simplest and most pointless “maridaje“ ( food and wine “marriage”), as it is known, involves serving a wine with an accompanying dish that is supposed to make the perfect match. It never is – or at least not for everyone. Indeed, how can it be? We all have different tastes, and when I have attended a cata/maridaje I invariably come away thinking that I must have gone to the wrong restaurant. It would have been more enjoyable if we had been allowed to choose the partners rather than have them thrust upon us. Fortunately, it appears that wine producers and their distributors are slowly coming to realise their error, and there are fewer of these ridiculous affairs than there were, say, in the first half of the decade. There are, however, some foods that are acknowledged as having no known partner, and it is not rocket science to work out what they are. Asparagus is one, as it has in common with artichokes a substance known as cynarin that blocks any sense of sweetness, with the result that the accompanying wine is impossible to appreciate. Another is smoked anchovies, the overpowering flavour of which makes anything except vodka distasteful. Caviar is a tricky one too, although once again vodka, cava or champagne are the first options. Curry-lovers mostly reject any alcoholic drink except beer, but I find an old manzanilla to be perfect, even an oloroso. Some maridajes can have a meaningful purpose, and we may actually learn something from them. A recent example was a tasting in which the main protagonist was acorn-fed ham (jamón de bellota), the best class available, and a real luxury item. This was provided by one of Spain’s top firms, Castro y González, whose production area spreads south of Salamanca to the northern part of Huelva province. This, unusually for the average ham producer, gives the extraordinary option of enabling the pigs to be reared in the north of the zone and the hams cured

( for three years) in the famous ham region of the Sierra de Huelva. This bestows enormous benefits, combining, as it does, the best of both worlds. A family business founded in 1910, Castro y Gonzalez exports to all of Europe, Japan, China, Singapore and South America. I must have consumed tons of ham over the years, but to be honest was never quite sure which piece of the leg I was eating. Each has a different taste and consistency, a large part of which is influenced by the length of time the ham has been hung, since the fat obeys the force of gravity and over time concentrates in the lower regions. However, everyone has their own preference, which is what the tasting was all about. That, and the task of deciding which of the eight wines were the most suitable. These were all primarily from the Chivite Perelada stable, and included the notable Gran Claustro Cuvée cava and Chivite’s now well-known Las Fincas rosado. Quite correctly, and adequately placed in the order of things, the tail-end Charlie was Tio Pepe fino sherry. So, if you think tasting food and wine together is a great way to pass a few hours, be aware that eight wines were tasted with four different cuts of jam. A total of 32 variations on what was really an outstanding sensory experience, and I wish everyone could have the same opportunity. Having said that, almost any quality jamón de bellota is delicious, and the number of occasions you can enjoy it will depend on your bank balance – or whether you have generous friends with good taste.

Promising Research News for Cardiovascular Patients Medical Minutes by John Schieszer

PATCHING UP A HEART ATTACK Researchers in England are reporting that they have grown heart patches in the lab that are safe to move into trials for people with hearts damaged by a heart attack. These patches could one day cure debilitating heart failure, which is a major killer in the United States. At Imperial College London, scientists have developed a way to grow thumb-size patches of heart tissue (3cm x 2cm) that contain up to 50 million human stem cells. The stem cells are programmed to turn into working heart muscles that can be seen beating. One or more of these patches could be implanted in the heart of someone after they’ve had a heart attack to limit, and even reverse, the loss of the heart’s pumping ability, according to the researchers. During a heart attack, the heart is starved of vital nutrients and oxygen, killing off parts of the heart muscle. This weakens the heart and can eventually lead to heart failure. The patches have been shown to be safe in rabbits and they led to an improvement in the function of the heart after a heart attack. After a period of up to four weeks, detailed heart scans showed that the heart’s left ventricle (the chamber responsible for pumping blood through the aorta) was recovering without developing any abnormal heart rhythms, which is a potential side effect of other stem cell delivery methods. Importantly, the patches appeared to be nourished by blood vessels growing into them from the recipient heart. Once sewn in place, the patches are intended to physically support the damaged heart muscle and help it pump more efficiently by releasing natural chemicals that stimulate the heart cells to repair and regenerate. The patches

were developed in response to somewhat disappointing results from around the world when stem cells were just directly injected into damaged heart muscle. Without a fixed “patch”, stem cells are quickly cleared from the heart and aren’t able to cause significant levels of repair. “One day, we hope to add heart patches to the treatments that doctors can routinely offer people after a heart attack. We could prescribe one of these patches alongside medicines for someone with heart failure, which you could take from a shelf and implant straight in to a person,” said Dr. Richard Jabbour, who carried out the research at the London BHF Centre of Regenerative Medicine. WALNUTS MAY HELP LOWER BLOOD PRESSURE When combined with a diet low in saturated fats, eating walnuts may help lower blood pressure in people at risk of cardiovascular disease, according to a new study by American researchers. In a randomised, controlled trial, they examined the effects of replacing some of the saturated fats in participants’ diets with walnuts. The team found that when participants ate whole walnuts daily in combination with lower overall amounts of saturated fat, they had better blood pressure levels. “When participants ate whole walnuts, they saw greater benefits than when they consumed a diet with a similar fatty acid profile as walnuts without eating the nut itself,” said study investigator Penny Kris-Etherton, who is a distinguished professor of nutrition at Penn State in Philadelphia. “So, it seems like there’s a little something extra in walnuts that are beneficial, maybe their

bioactive compounds, maybe the fibre, maybe something else that you don’t get in the fatty acids alone.” Researchers theorise that walnuts contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which is a plant-based omega-3 that may positively affect blood pressure. For this current study, the researchers recruited 45 participants who were overweight or obese and were between the ages of 30 and 65. Before the study began, participants were placed on a “run-in” diet for two weeks. The run-in diet included 12 per cent of their calories from saturated fat, which mimics an average American diet. After the run-in diet, the participants were randomly assigned to one of three study diets, all of which included less saturated fat than the run-in diet. The diets included one that incorporated whole walnuts, one that included the same amount of ALA and polyunsaturated fatty acids without walnuts, and one that partially substituted oleic acid (another fatty acid) for the same amount of ALA found in walnuts, without any walnuts. Following each diet period, the researchers assessed the participants for several cardiovascular risk factors including central systolic and diastolic blood pressure, brachial pressure, cholesterol and arterial stiffness. The researchers found that while all treatment diets had a positive effect on cardiovascular outcomes, the diet with whole walnuts provided the greatest benefits. The Benefits of

Embracing Gratitude By Rachel Garrod

Rachel Garrod, Ph.D. provides physiotherapy for people with chronic health problems and is a stop smoking counsellor. Tel. (+34) 652 281 122 rachelgarrod1@gmail.com

As a physiotherapist who works with people with long-term health problems I often encounter comorbidity issues of anxiety and/or depression. In order to maximise quality of life, it is therefore important to consider the psychological perspective as well as the physical. Tapping into things that are good for our mental health and give us positivity rather than negativity is essential for everyone, especially those with poor health. A simple activity that we can all do is to practise “daily gratitude”, and the science is strong that this can help in a number of ways. In psychological terms, embracing a grateful attitude, either by writing down things you are grateful for or by silently acknowledging them, mitigates feelings of anger and resentment. People who regularly write in a gratitude diary before bed have been shown to sleep better than those who do not. Regular practice of gratitude also helps relieve stress associated with trauma. A study published in Behaviour Research and Therapy found Vietnam War veterans with higher levels of gratitude experienced lower rates of post-traumatic stress disorder. Another study, this one from Personality and Individual Differences in 2012, showed that those prac-

tising gratitude had fewer aches and pains and felt healthier than those who did not. Regular gratitude is known to reduce depression and anger and increase happiness and reduce. It may also help individuals become more focussed and goal-orientated. I see many people with an incurable illness that leaves them housebound, fearful and depressed. With chronic ill health the need to replace feelings of self-resentment or anger with gratitude is even more important, although initially it may feel an impossibility. Even small actions can make a difference: sending someone a text message saying thank you for something you appreciated will foster a sense of well-being and make it more likely that person will repeat the action. Regularly acknowledging gratitude for a book you have enjoyed, a sunset you saw, a friend who called round and so on can not only lift your mood but make you feel better. Although it may feel hard or even silly initially, with perseverance and thanks to the wonderful neuroplasticity of our brain, the grateful attitude becomes the automatic attitude. Without even being aware of it we can replace feelings of resentment with feelings of hope and joy – and that’s got to be something to be grateful for!

CONTEMPORARY PROTEST, DESIGN CREATIVITY AND GEOMETRIC INNOVATION

CONVERSATIONS IN ISRAEL An exhibition that features five site-specific installations exploring reciprocity in design, behaviours and methodologies remains on show at the Design Museum Holon in Tel Aviv until 26 October. “Design and communication are indefinitely tied together,” explains chief curator Maya Dvash. “‘The Conversation Show’ showcases the layers of this notion – the conversation between creators themselves, as well as the dialogue between the designers and visitors.” The objective of The Conversation Show, adds exhibition curator Maria Cristina Didero, “is to represent a peculiar approach to design, focusing on the centrality of people and the way they interact with each other. It aims to analyse and portray the shared and peculiar methodologies of working together on a new task, confirming design as a drive of communication exchange. But here we also gave designers another task: to envision a way to show and pass to the audience their personal way of interaction while creating.” More details at: smh.org.il

LAUFEN CANVAS IN SWITZERLAND In June, Swiss bathroom brand Laufen organised an art project in cooperation with the Brasilea Foundation that combined material and design innovation. The “Impressões” works of art could be viewed as part of the “Satellites” exhibition held parallel to Art Basel. The polyhedra, made of Laufen’s Saphirkeramik, served as a multi-faceted “canvas” for the artworks. Impressões included works developed by the Brasilea Art Foundation in collaboration with artists Maria-Carmen Perlingeiro, Alex Flemming, Zezão, Christina Oiticica and SHN (Eduardo Saretta, Haroldo Paranhos and Marcelo Fazolin). The artworks were then printed as transfer prints on the polyhedra. According to the organisers, “With their flat polygonal surfaces, straight edges and pointed corners, the polyhedra have geometric properties that could not have been produced with classical sanitary ceramics with the necessary precision. The fact that the art project could nevertheless be realised is thanks to Laufen’s innovative Saphirkeramik, which the company developed over several years of research and development work.” Laufen is available from Proinco in Estepona (Pol. Maiju Tirri

Exhibition at Magna Café Maiju Tirri is an internationally known Finnish artist. Northern roots combined with strong emotions are the essence of her rough but sensual art. She graduated with a bachelor of arts in 1993, and has had various solo and group exhibitions in London, Gibraltar, Spain, Italy, France, Monaco and Finland. Her art is held in private collections in Europe, the Middle East and the US. Apart from painting, Maiju does graphic art, Giclee reproductions, pop art, portraits and glass art. She spends her winters in Marbella, where she is inspired by the Mediterranean sea and fascinating Spanish atmosphere, although Finland still has a special place in her heart. “As an artist, my philosophy is to search and convey the harmony and goodness in my work. My essential mission is to give powerful positive experience through my art.” She describes her abstract paintings as portraying “the continuous movement and change of the world and life in general, coming together as the present and eternity”. Maiju Tirri’s work will remain on show at Magna Café until 24 September. All the Giclee reproductions are numbered and handsigned, so a this is a good opportunity to buy one as an investment as they are likely to increase in value. Green Star

Original Florida Pool Enclosures Green Star offers a totally new concept on the Costa del Sol, installing bespoke Florida pool enclosures to protect your swimming pool. The construction is minimalistic in its frame, with a fine net that covers your pool and protects it from insects - allowing you to enjoy your outdoor area without having to spray poison and leave your terrace doors open. The enclosure keeps your pool clean, offering easier maintenance and protecting it from falling leaves and debris. The net also protects your

pool from the harsh sun, reducing water evaporation and saving you money. It is effectively an extension to your home, with the extra living space meaning you can enjoy the outside while being protected from the elements, as well as providing your home with extra security. At night, the enclosure can be illuminated, so you can enjoy your pool area at any time of the day and night. Tel. (+34) 602 291 111 / contact@green-star.org / www.green-star.org

The bar at Royal Tennis Club in El Rosario has re-opened after a complete makeover. Before Wim de Weerdt and his family took over Royal Rabibo, it was simply a cafetería at the tennis courts, albeit with a great amount of potential. From a place to just have a drink, you can now spend the whole day there with plenty of activities for young and old. Apart from the well-maintained clay, hard and pádel courts, there is also a stunning swimming pool, a playground with ping-pong table, and dance and karate lessons for kids. You can relax on luxury sunbeds overlooking the terrace and pool, and the café has been transformed into a stylish restaurant. Dishes include lobster, goat’s cheese salad, grilled tuna and meat from the barbecue. Royal Rabibo can also be rented for parties - birthdays, weddings, etc.. There is a special opening offer, where you can relax all day on a luxury bed including towels, with a bottle of wine and water, for only €50. A DJ will be playing on a daily basis during the summer months. Urb. El Rosario, Ctra. N340, Km. 188, Marbella Tel. (+34) 625 133 526 Facebook: Royal Rabibo Restaurant, Sports Bar and Pool Club

Jan Atack Appeal Fund

Generous Support for Popular Lauro Golfer When Jan Atack went into hospital in October 2018 for a relatively routine operation to free a nerve in her neck, she never expected to wake up on a ventilator paralysed from the chest down. After weeks of intensive care she was transferred to the specialist spinal injuries unit in Toledo where she has been undergoing therapy. She is now off the ventilator but still quadriplegic and was due to be discharged in June but her condition remains largely unchanged and she is not expected to regain much physical mobility. As Jan is a popular member of Lauro golf club and 2018 captain of Los Cantarranas (The Singing Frogs), friends and fellow golfers rallied around to support a special charity day organised by Janet Cox at the Alhaurín golf course to raise funds for the Jan Atack Appeal Fund. “This year,” says Janet, “I felt compelled to help Jan and Keith in the only way I knew how. I cannot imagine what it must be like for them at the moment. Their story has touched people’s hearts.” The appeal fund is designed to purchase specialised equipment and care services to help Jan rebuild her life when she comes home from hospital. It is being organised by a committee made up of Lauro members. . www.janatackappeal.com Facebook page: Jan Atack Appeal Donations can also be made directly by visiting www.gofundme. com/jan-atack-appeal-fund
