Occhio’s Mito floor lamp… available from Illusion (www.e-illusion.es).

The concept of a “smart home” is now well-ingrained into contemporary architecture. In areas such as the Costa del Sol, for example, where cutting-edge building technology is the norm, it would be rare to find a newly built property that didn’t incorporate latest home automation (domótica) – integrating everything into a central control system from ambient light settings to digital kitchens. So what is the new frontier, the next step architects, designers, builders and scientists need to take, not only to keep pushing technological boundaries but also to deal with concerns about global climate change? According to professor of emerging technology Martyn Dade-Robertson, one answer is making buildings part of nature. Writing for The Conversation, he asked, “What if our homes were alive? I don’t mean smart homes with the disembodied voice of Alexa deciding the setting for your living room spotlights. I mean actually alive – growing, living, breathing and even reproducing. The idea might seem far-fetched, but in the face of a climate crisis we humans need to think radically about the way we live in and build our environment.” Noting that “biology is capable of extraordinary feats of engineering”, he said he and his colleagues at Newcastle and Northumbria Universities had set up a new research centre to investigate the options. In the meantime, drawing on research from other institutions and academics, he outlined five ways his team believed buildings of the future might become “living-breathing things”… buildings that grow, heal and breathe, and have immune systems and stomachs. 1. Mycelium, the root network of fungus, can grow on little more than wood chips and coffee grounds in very short periods of time, “creating materials with significant structural performance”. 2. One potential method to “heal” cracks in a building’s concrete is to imbed bacterial spores in the concrete mix. 3. To counteract the effects of air-conditioning (apart from opening a window for natural ventilation), building membranes could be created to “sweat as indoor humidity rose, allowing air to flow through the walls. 4. Kitchens could be made “bio-receptive”, promoting the growth of bacterial that are known to offer resistance against disease-causing bugs. “Soon, we might be able to eat our probiotic yogurts in probiotic kitchens.” 5. Developing a new type of microbial fuel cell, taking domestic waste and generating small amounts of power, “as part of a wider project exploring the processing power of microbes in buildings”. Our attention was also drawn this summer to an initiative being promoted by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and aimed at persuading designers to help transform the global economy from a “linear” to a “circular” model by not creating products that end up in a landfill. As reported in Dezeen, the Circular Design Programme’s executive summary notes, “In industries such as fashion and plastics packaging, products and systems are designed such that upwards of 80 per cent of material flows are destined for landfill, incineration or even leakage into natural environments. Designing for a circular economy is one of the biggest creative challenges of our time. We need a new approach and an orchestrated global programme to support designers and creators.” Circular design is said to follow the principles of the circular economy: i.e. eradicating waste and pollution, re-using resources and enhancing natural systems. Admirable principles, indeed…

LUXURIOUS

Living Rooms Your living room could be considered the heart of the home, where you entertain guests and relax on your own watching your favourite television programme. It goes without saying, therefore, that your seating has to be comfortable and well-proportioned for the room – as well, of course, as being extremely stylish. Consider a statement armchair for a designer look and choose side tables and coffee tables that are the right height and size for the space, so as not to clutter the room.

IMPRESSIVE Fabrics Entering the autumn/winter months fabrics become more of a focus as they bring a sense of warmth to the ambience of the home. Cushions not only offer comfort but can also add a splash of colour to a chair. With this in mind, upholstery fabric can totally transform a chair, sofa or pouf that has seen better days making it look sparkling new again. Curtains soften the room and the light that filters into it, and there are so many options to choose from – it is just up to you to opt for the right one that suits your requirements and taste.

Opposite Page Above Left The decorative Paintbox fabric range from Carlucci di Chivasso is made from velvet with a large bold print ideal for a statement chair. DINING IN

Sophistication The dining table plays an important part in bringing people together within the home. Now that new contemporary homes have become more open-plan, the dining room tends to be left out of the design plans and, instead the dining area is part of the living room and even the kitchen combined. With this change in the style of living, dining in is now less formal and more social.

Setting The

Perfect Table Whether you are looking for a casual look for your table or a more formal setting, tableware sets the mood for the meal – your cooking is another subject! Now that dining at home has become less formal, rustic tableware is hugely popular, with each stylish piece being unique in its form and uneven edges and imperfections being its main charm. This does not mean there is no place for more formal tableware… and there are some very exciting collections that have hit the market recently. Here are some examples…

Vista Alegre’s Fiji porcelain tableware range combines floral motifs with geometric patterns, adding a fresh and contemporary look to a dining table. Vista Alegre is available through Casasola Décor near Torre Real (www.casasoladecor.com) and Miccoli Homes by Daiane Oliveira in San Pedro de Alcántara (www.miccoli.es).

CELEBRATING The Outdoors

With the magnificent all year-round outdoor life that we enjoy here in southern Europe, our outdoor furniture takes on greater importance. More care has to be taken with the materials we choose for our loungers and armchairs due to intense UV rays that can cause materials to fade in the direct sunlight. There are many great ideas for respite from the sun with state-of-the-art pergolas and, if you entertain a lot, stylish dining sets for alfresco dining and modular seating systems are always a great option to cater for varying numbers of guests. Take a look at these ideas…

Kettal has introduced the 12x4 metre VDL Pavilion, an updated construction created under the supervision of Dion Neutra, son of Richard Neutra, who originally designed the Penthouse for Kettal in 1963 as a celebration of the relationship between health and architecture. There is an automated smart home system to control the lighting, air-conditioning and heating, amongst other interesting features. Kettal is available through ID Latinia in Edif. Playa del Duque in Puerto Banús (www.idlatinia.com), Ambar Decoraciones in Avda. del Mediterráneo in San Pedro de Alcántara (www.ambardecoraciones.com), Siesta Interior Design in C. ORDER

In The House!

They say a tidy home is a happy home, and this could not be more accurate. Clutter is bad for the mind and can be overwhelming. Simply installing shelving or adding cabinetry to store away your possessions can automatically change the whole aesthetic of a room, opening it up and making it feel more airy. Here are some ideas… Above Left The Shanti Surprise Puzzle cabinet from Kare is made from mango wood and is decorated mystically with carved motifs and ornaments inspired by old Indian carvings. Kare is situated in Centro de Negocios Oasis on Marbella’s Golden Mile (www.kare-marbella.es). RAVISHING

Rugs

Now we are entering into the cooler months, perhaps it is time to consider a new rug. They bring warmth to a room as well as helping to dampen echoey acoustics. A rug with a bold design or colour can serve as an artistic statement and bring a focus to the room. As a rug takes a lot of wear and tear, invest in a good-quality one so that it withstands the test of time.

The Fame rug from JAB Anstoetz has a luxurious velvet sheen and is available in 17 contemporary colours. Its dense texture makes it highly durable and gives it a cosy feel. JAB is available from Cort Idea on the Mijas Road (www.cortidea.es), Casasola Décor near Torre Real (www.casasoladecor.com), ID Latinia in Edif. BATHROOMS that inspire

Over the years, bathrooms have become more inviting and less clinical, with furniture items, chandeliers, wallpapers and other decorative elements having a greater presence. Here are some ideas to spruce up your bathroom this winter…

ATLAS GROUP GOES DUTCH with New Property Development in Estepona LEADING PROMOTER FROM HOLLAND JOINS FORCES WITH ATLAS GROUP TO CRACK SPANISH PROPERTY MARKET

The Costa del Sol property market is booming and is about to welcome a new investor, Schonck, Schul and Compagnie. New to Spain, yet already a big name in Holland, the company is due to break ground on their first Spanish project - Costafiore Gardens - a new development of luxury two and threebedroom apartments including seven penthouses complete with rooftop private swimming pools in Estepona. REPLICATING DUTCH SUCCESS IN SPAIN CEO Richard Schul’s motto is “nothing is impossible” and he often says that he would walk through fire to get a job done, which is exactly how he is approaching Costafiore Gardens. Having made the decision to expand operations into Spain, his vision is to replicate the long-standing successes they have experienced in Holland by undertaking high-profile projects such as the muchadmired Hotel Nassau Breda in Landgoed de Klokkenberg, and therefore nothing has been left to chance.

SHARED ETHICS AND WORKING PRACTICES To ensure the project’s success, Schul was determined to work with a construction partner of equal repute, and so set about inviting tenders from the major construction companies. Yet the partnership with Atlas Group came about via an introduction by a mutual acquaintance, Oscar García from Siemar Kitchens. Atlas Group’s ethos, back catalogue and in-depth knowledge resonated with Schonck, Schul and Compagnie, and so the deal was sealed. Schul explains why he chose Atlas… “Atlas Group ticked all of the boxes with regards to reputation and company culture. They also possess the necessary expertise to assist with project revisions and optimisation and to help us navigate through the Spanish systems.”

INTEGRATED PROPERTY SERVICES Although predominantly known for construction, Atlas Group in reality offers a much more comprehensive service covering all elements of property development. The integrated range of property services includes construction, pool and garden services, enabling clients to benefit from a cohesively managed project and thereby allowing greater efficiency, saving time and money. Mike Gregory, Director General of Atlas, confirmed the partnership. “We are excited about the project and looking forward to working with Richard and his team. We share the same views on efficiency, value for money and going the extra mile to make sure the product is delivered on-time and on-budget, and whenever possible we aim to exceed client expectations.” Designed by local architect Ventura Moron, the Costafiore Gardens residential apartment complex will be sleek, stylish and high-spec, and the open-

plan interiors will deliver today’s must-have indoor/outdoor lifestyle. Highquality materials and finishes will be used throughout, including porcelain floors 2.3-metre high internal doors with hidden hinges, kitchens supplied by Siemar (complete with fully integrated appliances), Italian sanitary ware and smart technology. Residents can enjoy exclusive on-site facilities including swimming pools, spa, landscaped and manicured Mediterranean gardens, underground parking and security. Costafiore Gardens is due for completion in early 2021, and the off-plan properties will shortly be released for sale. Atlas Group CC Atenea, Estepona Tel. (+34) 951 272 140 / www.atlas-group.es

ARTE DEL LUSSO

Cutting-Edge Window Dressings and Automated Systems Interview with Managing Director Svetlana Dimitrova Photos: Johnny Gates

How has the Arte del Lusso showroom evolved since opening a few years ago? The Arte del Lusso brand has evolved beyond curtains and blinds – the main products in our portfolio. We have also launched Style Expert Services, providing our customers with advanced information about the newest trends in window dressing and high-quality automated blinds and shades, offering exclusive window decoration solutions for every taste and budget. Our main goal is to meet the customers’ needs for a modern, beautiful and functional product that is cost-effective, and to exceed their quality expectations. To keep up with the constant changes in the market the company has evolved in two directions: contract projects and direct sales. Today, a few years after we started the business, we are the biggest provider of customised blinds, shades, contract fabrics and window dressing solutions on the Coast. Have you noticed any significant changes in the style of curtains and blinds? What are the most popular trends this year? Window treatment trends change every year. Geographic location, culture, architectural characteristics and specific features of the area (like climate conditions) are some of the factors that influence different aspects of window decoration trends. Our main task is to take into account the factors that apply to our region: strong sunlight, humidity, big panoramic windows, the need of powerful sun and solar protection and blackout, and to advise our customers accordingly to make the best choice of products, systems and materials. As for the main trends of 2019… 1. Roman and roller shades: Clean and simple is one of the biggest trends in window treatments. Roman shades are classic and have clean lines for modern interiors. The choice to use shades as your primary window treatment is really popular right now, especially shades made of natural woven fibres, such as bamboo. 2. Metal hardware is another popular trend. 3. Technology is now something to consider with your window treatments. High-tech touches with home automation and motorisation are on the rise because of their convenience and safety. Cordless blinds and shades are quickly becoming very popular from a safety point of view (cords are not safe for kids and pets), as well as organic and textural elements like woven blinds. 4. Neutral linen drapes and sheers are timeless. 5. Functionality is an important consideration. 6. A combination of window treatments to achieve the perfect look.

What are the main kinds of projects you carry out? The main projects are installation of motorised and automated systems, electric roller blinds, as well as full window decoration for apartments and residential properties. Also, we carry out numerous contract projects for renting out properties and refurbished houses and apartments. Tell us more about the motorised systems you offer… All types of shades, curtains and blinds we provide on the market can be motorised. We use the most popular and recognised international brands of motors, with a minimum five-year warranty. These intelligent motors have many functions, the opportunity of programming them, an elegant equipment interface and easy client use. We are able to program settings tailored specifically to the client’s needs. We can, for example, operate 20-30 blinds with one button, and programming a client’s favourite position for all of their blinds. This saves lots of time and makes their use extremely smart. The brands we work with provide strong European technical support, and that gives us the opportunity to resolve any kind of problem very quickly. Our main brands are Somfy, Mottura Elero and Qmotion. They can be successfully integrated into any type of smart home system and can be set, for example, to open and close at sunset or sunrise. Very popular at the moment are our battery-operated blinds, which work without electricity. Clients can recharge them like a mobile phone, once every six to eight months. What do clients need to know before choosing the most appropriate window decoration? First, a client needs to understand what is the function and main task of the window solution by identifying if it is for sun protection, black-out, a decorative feature, or for all three. Secondly, defining what kind of product is necessary to resolve the problem: blinds, shades, sheers or curtains. Thirdly, choosing the materials, technical characteristics (like transparency, sunlight and heat absorption, frame retardation, humidity, cleaning), colour options and system operations – cord, electric or manual. TO PUT OR NOT TO PUT...

That is the Question By Alia Babapulle What am I talking about? Why plants do not do well together, of course. Many times people are not aware that some plants thrive together, rather like people, and others simply cannot. Also like people. Let’s see which combinations you really should avoid if you don’t want to have a mess in your garden, and find yourself standing there and saying, “What did I do?” Firstly, we gardeners do all we possibly can to keep our plants happy and healthy, but sometimes, no matter what you do, certain plants just don’t go together. Plants that don’t like each other may be responding to different environmental needs, they could be in direct competition with one another for major resources, or one may attract insects that severely harm the other. Determining plant incompatibility can be a guess-and-check situation since soil types also have an influence on what plants should not be planted together. All this has to be taken into account. Check that your plants are all about the same size and have the same light requirements. Too many do not take this into consideration at all. When planting taller and shorter plants together, make sure that the shorter plants are spaced far enough away and orientated so the sun will shine on them during the day. Many gardeners solve this problem by putting the shortest plants in their own row on the edge of the garden or planted as a border planting. Plants that need a lot of water will cause those water-haters nearby a great deal of discomfort, and the same goes for fertiliser. It’s always a good idea to plant things with similar nutritional and water needs together, unless they’re fiercely competitive. Even then, compensate by spacing them extra wide and providing enough fertiliser and water for both types of plants.

Last but not least, are the plants are allelopathic. Allelopathic plants have the capability to chemically impede the vital systems of competing plants. These plants are usually weeds, but many landscape and crop plants have been observed leaving behind allelopathic chemicals. Research in this area is sparse, but the list of plants believed to have allelopathic properties includes: asparagus, beans, beets, broccoli, cabbage, cucumbers, peas, soybeans, sunflowers and tomatoes. Garlic and onions are believed to interfere with the growth of beans and peas, but seem to be compatible with most other garden denizens. Other commonly believed plant incompatibilities include the following: mint and onions where asparagus is growing; pole beans and mustard near beets; any member of the cabbage family near strawberries; cauliflower, corn, dill and potatoes near tomatoes. These are just a few examples. Please do some research as well, as it would be a great shame to spend time and money on trying to grow plants and then to have them fail. I have found that herbs and chillies are best grown in their own separate pots. I currently have lemon grass, lemon thyme, sage, oregano and basil, black and normal green, together in a big pot and flourishing; and two pots of flatleafed parsley, coriander and rosemary, two pots of mint and six different type of chillies growing away happily. I move them around all the time, as it seems they like this. Do contact me if you have any questions. Don’t forget that I specialise in eco-friendly interiors, not only gardens. I have my finger on the pulse of all sorts of wonderful products which help reduce the nonsense which has been going on for too long. An eco-friendly home can look splendid, and think what you are going to be doing for your children! They will thank you. Have fun!

Harmonised Spaces in Award-Winning Project Architect Filippo Taidelli from FTA won first prize in the “shopping and office centres” category at the 11th edition of the Grand Prix Casagrande Padana international architecture competition. According to the jury, “The congress centre project, together with the broader intervention on the campus, shows refined sensitivity in harmonising the quality of spaces and the coverings. The choice of different shades of earthy colours for the ventilated façades of the various architectural blocks emerges clearly in the campus project. This choice defines the image of a new contemporary urban village in the countryside just outside the city.“ www.filippotaidelli.com

Contemporary Renovation of Traditional Middle Eastern Villa When Italian architectural duo Andrea Sensoli and Cecilia Morosi first inspected this area, they found an “overwhelming villa that stood in the middle of an empty plot”. The aim, they recall, was to renovate and not reconstruct, and only a few amendments could be made to the wide open space outside the villa. So, after some careful consideration, they decided that a rich garden would bring a natural aspect to the scene. Later, they wanted to establish a smooth flow from one medium to another — i.e. from the soil of the garden to the concrete of the villa — which prompted them to make arrangements to have the interior absorb a part of the garden. Located in Dubai, this private residence project by Super Future Design is described as “a silhouette of traditional Middle Eastern architecture, surrounded by vast scenery that gave an all-round perspective on the project”. The bold architecture was an ode to the heritage it reflected, but the designers also wanted to incorporate some modernity into the space to create a dynamic combination, and take a holistic approach by bringing eclectic design features into the home. To achieve this effect, they decided on opening up the space and making it borderless, starting by demolishing a large part of the outer walls. “In the inner expanse, the number of doors was kept to a minimum, making the platform appear wide open and all-encompassing. Bulky features that restrict the aesthetic circulation, such as the parapets in the patio, were removed, and enchanting French doors were added to grace the main opening points. Meanwhile, the upstairs venue connected the home to the outer garden. “By doing so, not only is there a channel to receive more natural light, but it gives a multidimensional view from one room to another, and further into the lush greenery of the garden. Combining the villa and outer garden as one whole structure played upon the eclectic theme and also offers users the opportunity to experience the villa in all its glory from the outside and vice versa.” www.superfuture.design

Innovative Working Environment in Spain Pierattelli Architetture interpreted the shape of an eagle in the design of a new headquarters for Kortimed in Spain (Valencia). The Italian liquid food transportation company’s eagle logo is incorporated into the building through a profile silhouette. Two imposing 10-metre overhangs run around the body of the building, touching the ground at the back and resembling the wings of an eagle. According to the Florence-based designers, “The façade is structured in chequered modules with panels marking a chromatic rhythm in a constant state of flux in its relationship with natural light. Large XLight tiles made by Porcelanosa were applied to prefabricated reinforced and variably sectioned concrete modules. The alternation of modules and the use of five different colourways — from white tip to blue tail — lend movement to the façade, at the same time recalling an eagle’s plumage.” The commission was to create a contemporary headquarters that integrates all strategic, management, operational, logistic and symbolic functions in a single construction. Spain is the Kortimed’s first commercial venture abroad, “a natural location for creating a hub to serve as a cornerstone on which to consolidate an intermodal transport network involving land, sea and rail transport between Europe and northern Africa”. www.pierattelliarchitetture.it/en/

World Architecture Festival

SUSTAINABILITY at the Heart of Innovative Awards

Architects shortlisted in the 12th edition of the World Architecture Festival awards have focused on pressing global challenges for sustainability. According to the organisers, “Following the establishment of ‘Architects Declare’, a collective of some of the most renowned practices who have come together to announce a state of climate emergency, this year’s World Architecture Festival shortlisted entries include designs that demonstrate how buildings can play a major role in a more sustainable future.” These include an eco-airport in Singapore centred around a 15,000 square metre state-of-the-art, indoor public garden, which features a 40-metre indoor waterfall falling through the centre of a doughnut-shaped glass roof, alongside 3,000 trees and 100,000 shrubs from around the globe. Affordable and sustainable modular housing in Copenhagen “shines a light on this nascent mode of construction, which has the potential to offer much to the housing crisis”; while another entrant tackled environmental concerns at a volumetric level through the “Solstice on the Park” project – a 26-storey residential tower in the USA optimised for environmental performance through angled window panels which are slanted inwards at 72 degrees — the precise angle at which the sun hits the Chicago skyline at the height of the summer solstice. In the culture category, Helsinki Central Library Oodi “heralds a new era of library design where traditional functions meet modern technology, to create

an almost zero-energy building with panoramic views”. The “Future Project: Experimental” and “Future Project: Infrastructure” categories also launched some exciting and innovative entries, including a proposal for a waterfront park in New York City, transforming oil tanks into community gardens; and another for artificial, mid-bay barrier islands to act as a surge protection system for the Port of Houston. This year’s 534-strong shortlist ranges from private residential to education, infrastructure, healthcare, hospitality, cultural/civic, interior and landscape projects across 70 countries. The architects and designers behind each shortlisted project will compete for category prizes at the WAF from 4 to 6 December in Amsterdam, following previous editions in Barcelona, Singapore and Berlin. Presentations of the shortlisted designs will be made to more than 100 international juries in front of festival delegates. Category winners then compete against each other on the final day of the festival, or the ultimate accolades of World Building of the Year, Future Project of the Year, Interior of the Year and Landscape of the Year. Announcing details of the festival grand finale, WAF programme director Paul Finch said, “We have been inspired by the levels of innovation in this year’s entries, which show the incredible range of ways in which architects are responding to the global climate and biodiversity emergencies we face.” www.worldarchitecturefestival.com / @worldarchfest #WAF19

Marbella Design Fair

INNOVATION and Creative Flair

Prestigious national and international professionals and companies showcased avant-garde creations, innovative collections and luxurious interior décor items at the second annual Marbella Design Fair in July. Over 15 days, Marbella’s congress hall was the setting for a state-of-the-art exhibition by day, and glamorous cocktail parties by night across the city and along the coast. The Costa del Sol’s premier design companies (such as Camerich and Dairin Decoración) were joined by esteemed brands from elsewhere in Spain (including Villeroy & Boch, GARA and Ladenac), soaking up the cutting-edge buzz and learning more about the trend-setting Málaga market. The main objective this year, according to the organisers, was “to give life to diverse interior spaces, create a sensory and artistic experience for visitors, and position the fair as the epicentre of the world of interior design, decoration and luxury”. In addition to the presence of renowned interior designers and design firms, Marbella Design also organised a second edition of the “Design for Life” conference series, with discussions on latest trends in design and interior decoration, both in Spain and internationally. Other key attractions were a designer restaurant offering various gastronomic experiences, including artisanal cheeses, cocktails and wines; and picturesque garden areas that added a fresh ambience to the exhibition. Among those officially supporting the fair were Marbella Town Hall, Puente Romano and La Zagaleta, while Home & Lifestyle Magazine was one of the main media collaborators. www.marbelladesignfair.com / Photos: Johnny Gates.

PROGIBESPA

PROVIDING EXCELLENCE in Hydrotherapy Wellness Interview with Anton Lehto Photos: Johnny Gates

We recently joined you for your grand opening of the San Pedro de Alcántara showroom. For those readers not yet familiar with ProgibeSPA, tell us more about the showroom… ProgibeSPA is the only Jacuzzi dealer specialising in hot tubs, whirlpools, saunas, hammams, pergolas and vertical gardens on the Costa del Sol. The company has its roots in Helsinki (Finland) and Alicante (Spain). The ProgibeSPA story begun when the owners of Gibeller and Pro Patio met at a Jacuzzi conference in Italy, both selling products from Jacuzzi – the company that invented hydrotherapy. Gibeller, a 90-year-old family company dedicated to the distribution of materials for remodelling homes, was looking for ways to better serve its wellness customers; and Pro Patio, the leading spa specialist in Finland, was looking for growth opportunities.

What are the main products and services you offer? As already mentioned, hot tubs, whirlpools, saunas, hammams, pergolas and vertical gardens. We do all the installations, maintenance and service for all the products. ProgibeSPA also carries also a wide range of accessories and spare parts. What are the most important things we need to know about your Jacuzzi® brand? The seven Jacuzzi brothers emigrated to California from Italy. In 1943 Kenneth Jacuzzi developed rheumatic fever, which left him with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Recognising that monthly hydrotherapy sessions at hospital eased his son’s symptoms led Candido Jacuzzi , the youngest of the seven brothers, to develop a new hydrotherapy pump in 1956 which would give Kenneth more regular treatment at home. The family sold their portable pump, named J-300®, to hospitals and schools. From that innovation started a totally new range of business and the Jacuzzi brand quickly became known all over the world – and also as a generic name for all spas, hot tubs and whirlpools.

Jacuzzi is a global organisation with more than 300 original patents Today Jacuzzi® and thousands of employees, who speak different languages but all share one vision - excellence in wellness. What are the key health benefits when using a hot tub? · Muscle and joint relief: The heat of the water and pressure from the jets allow your muscles to completely relax. Hot tubs even have the power to soothe sore arthritic joints. · Improved mental and emotional health: While your body is healing inside the bubbling water, your mind will have time to wander. · Less stress, better sleep: Hydrotherapy can help to relieve stress and ease anxiety. Studies have shown that hot tubs can significantly and positively improve anxiety levels, and ease physical pain. · Quicker recovery from injuries: Hot tubs and hydrotherapy can help your body to naturally improve the healing process of muscles and joints following an injury. The buoyancy of the water lifts pressure from sore muscles and joints, while the heat of the water improves circulation and encourages relaxation. In conclusion… ProgibeSPA is dedicated to customer service, offering integral solutions with the best brands and high-quality products. The aim is to always leave a smile on customers’ faces by living the values of the company: honesty, humility, responsibility and, of course, professionalism. DISCOVER MONTE ELVIRIA AND LA MAIRENA

The Epitome of Exclusivity

One of the great attractions of the Costa del Sol is that you can live in a tranquil natural setting yet be conveniently close to the area’s main services and amenities. Not everywhere, of course, but in certain locations for the privileged few — and one of the best-kept secrets is Monte Elviria and La Mairena. Exclusive and relatively uncharted, the estate is so far away yet so near: an elegant hilltop retreat just a stone’s throw from the bustling Marbella coastline and within a protected UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Construction is limited to a tiny five per cent of the land, ensuring the integrity of this charming countryside hideaway is maintained indefinitely and respected wholeheartedly. As the developers note, “People have started realising that hillside living is where the trend is heading, but the opportunities are limited and prices will inevitably rise. Make sure you are there before your neighbour!” The meandering entry to Monte Elviria and La Mairena overflows with incredible views, with only the sounds and smells of Andalucian nature to accompany your approach. Surrounded by unspoiled expansive areas and rolling hills of protected cork oak and pine woodland, Monte Elviria and La Mairena is a perfect “best of both worlds” haven, offering peaceful serenity coupled with exceptional local facilities and convenient proximity to everything the coast has to offer.

SIESTA HOMES’ SECOND HOME The company’s new presence in the centre of the village, a mere eight minutes’ drive from the popular Elviria area, offers a welcoming meeting place for partners and clients in a stunning natural setting. “We have invested in the La Mairena area for years, so this new office space was a logical next step for us. Our belief in the magnificence of this protected Biosphere Reserve area, plus our new partnership with the largest local land owner, has lead us to not only redevelop our own projects here but also to diversify into other exciting avenues for improvement of the area and expansion of our lifestyle developer brand.” LIMITED REAL ESTATE OPPORTUNITIES Monte Elviria and La Mairena real estate opportunities include two outstanding redeveloped projects that maximise the enviable nature-lovers’ outdoor lifestyle: The Oakhill, consisting of luxury apartments and duplex penthouses with live-in estate managers; and Oakhill Heights, semi-detached homes and sprawling townhouses with incredible sea views and plunge pools. “We are also offering the extremely limited availability of a handful of superb turnkey plot-and-build projects, plus a limited number of resale properties within the area. We strongly recommend that you expand your horizons, aim higher

and purse perfection — which you will unquestionably find at Monte Elviria and La Mairena.” EXCITING NEW LEISURE FACILITIES In conjunction with their real estate plans, they note, “We are also dedicated to transforming and enhancing local amenities and services that will add to the expanding appeal of this prestigious area. In addition to proximity to superb golf facilities, private schools and a prestigious tennis academy, we have various exciting new leisure and fitness amenities at the planning stage.” As well as a new social club about to open, they are redeveloping an exciting countryside beach-style pool club with gourmet restaurant and pool-bar that will offer free membership for owners in both Oakhill projects. An innovative new fitness training nature trail is also being built, in keeping with the woodland surroundings, plus additional shops and facilities in the village, the details of which will be announced soon. THE RIGHT TIME Themselves committed to excellence, Siesta Homes suggest that home seekers also never settle for less than the best. “This is the best time to discover all that Monte Elviria and La Mairena has to offer. Building here is so limited that there is a small window of opportunity for maximum investment potential and value for money when acquiring property. The chances of owning property in this area is increasing in both scarcity and in price-point, and the changes coming to this area only further enhance its coveted exclusivity. Let us show you what you are missing. Come and see us and we promise your visit will be well worth it.” Siesta Homes Monte Elviria Calle Madrid, Local 4, Ojén Tel. +34 625 632 430 info@siestahomes.com www.siestahomes.com Siesta Interior Design Avda. Creating Dream Homes Across the Whole Spectrum Interview with Estefani Batista

Otero Group has grown enormously over the last two years… What do you believe is the secret to your success? I believe that the secret of our success is down to the fact that Otero is providing a series of guarantees to clients, as we are a well-established company that offers transparency and clarity at all stages of the project. This, together with a highly organised financial structure, has enabled Otero to grow quickly in an organised and successful way. Furthermore, we can also say that Otero is offering a very singular product that is still not common in the market; we offer solutions to the client from the moment they purchase a plot, as we design the project, we follow up all the paperwork through the different public administration stages, we develop the building, and finally, we offer the interior design service. This means that Otero covers the whole spectrum of stages, being the only contact the client needs in order to accomplish their new home project. In more poetic words, we can attribute our success to the dedication and passion of a professional team committed to providing a quality service in each of the project’s phases, optimising delivery times and, above all, providing comprehensive advice to customers.

One of your new services is an in-house interior design department... What prompted you to launch this department, and what are the main services it offers clients? Otero Design was born as an independent business unit, with its own staff, created to satisfy a growing need in the market and our own clients. I say this because until some time ago we were providing beautiful homes, but we realised that there was another step in the project that we should include, which not many companies in the sector are offering, and that is interior design. Bearing in mind that need, Otero decided to launch Otero Design, a new part of the company dedicated to offering a real turnkey experience. Our main service consists of providing all the furniture, lighting, landscaping and other items needed to create a ready-to-move-in home. Interior design is a key aspect of any project… Where do you start with a new design project, and at what point does your involvement end? In other words, how would you describe the whole interior design process for Otero? We normally start the conversation with our clients as they purchase a plot with us. Therefore we have plenty of time to discover what our client is seek-

ing, what their taste is, and what the home of their dreams looks like. So, after a few conversations, we have a clear idea of what the client is looking for and we provide a design proposal — of course, free of charge — including a mood board presentation, 3D images and a detailed quote. From the moment we offer a proposal until the day we hand over the keys to the house, we are completely involved in the project, dealing with the manufacturers, storing the items and taking care of all the details. What can clients expect when hiring Otero Design? Perfection! (laughs) We are dedicated to creating breathtaking signature spaces. Our multi-disciplinary team and large spectrum of suppliers and craftsmen mean we are one of the top studios in the market when it comes to dressing the interiors of your home. BENETTI DIAMOND 145

A Classic Symbol

of Yachting Power and Balance Officially unveiled during the Cannes Yachting Festival, the Benetti Diamond 145 now has its first owner. Expressing his satisfaction at the signing of the contract, CEO Franco Fusignani said, “Right from the design stage we realised it was a model with incredible potential, representing the perfect synthesis of the core features of the Benetti Displacement Class across its entire history. BP001 is currently being fitted out at the Viareggio shipyard and will be delivered to her owner on the first half of 2020.” The new flagship in the Class product line was designed to symbolise Benetti’s traditional combination of power and balance. Featuring huge glazed surfaces that accentuate the length of the yacht and ensure that the interiors are flooded with natural light, the exterior lines are the work of designer Giorgio M. Cassetta; while the interiors feature light colour shades to decorate the yacht’s roomy, welcoming settings. Benetti’s engineering team describe the Diamond 45 as “a yacht with a discreet sense of luxury that amazes even the most demanding owners when it comes to style, comfort and safety. She is an elegant yacht, with proportions and details that suggest important interior and exterior volumes, as well as conveying a sense of strength and power.” The sleek, clean exterior lines embrace the proportions of a large yacht, with refined and dynamic superstructure masses, high hull sides and an extremely long reverse sheer line.

The interiors have been customised to reflect the owner’s tastes. They feature curved lines uniting expansive and cosy settings that are flooded with natural light, with light colourways bringing a cosmopolitan sophistication and elegance to this timeless yacht. In addition to spacious interior volumes, another key feature of this yacht are extensive glazed surfaces, not only in the saloons but also in the guest accommodation and owner’s cabin. Occupying the bow area on the main deck, the master-cabin is full-beam, with a large wardrobe, full-beam bathroom and office. Amidships on the main deck are the galley and services area, with a large saloon further aft.

According to Benetti, at the owner’s request it was decided to leave more space for the lounge area furnished with big sofas in the main saloon. The dining area was moved to the upper deck, and the lower deck contains the night area for guests, with four double cabins, and a separate area for the crew accommodation. Outside, a low table and various sofas offer pleasant opportunities to relax both at sea and at anchor. Located in the stern, the beach club is designed to be at water level, in such a way as to make the space both independent and versatile, as well as visually stunning. Two 1,400hp Man engines drive BP001 to a top speed of 15 knots. At a cruising speed of 11 knots the yacht has a range of 3,800 nautical miles.

HELSINKI HOTEL Inspired by Finnish Folklore and Mythology

With the Costa del Sol – and other parts of Spain – in the grip of heatwave conditions this summer, we decided to fly north for a cool change of climate and scenery. Before heading into the countryside for a few days chilling out at a summer cottage beside one of Finland’s 190,000 lakes, we spent two days in Helsinki, enjoying the Finnish capital’s picturesque port setting and laid-back café lifestyle – and staying at the chic Klaus K Hotel. 176 SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER 2019

Travel HL65.indd 176

26/8/19 17:07

Described as “Helsinki’s first design hotel”, Klaus K features a décor inspired by the Kalevala, a 19th century work of epic poetry that is one of Finland’s most influential literary masterpieces. Classic Finnish folklore and mythology are infused in design details throughout the hotel, and its “Art Rooms” have been created in collaboration with leading Finnish contemporary artists. The hotel’s centuries-old premises are a combination of two architecturally significant buildings. On the Erottaja side is architect Frans Sjöström’s signature work, built in 1882; while the building on the Bulevardi side was built in 1912 and designed by Lars Sonck, a key architect during the national-romantic movement. The establishment was already being used as a guest house in 1924 and the first actual hotel was opened in 1938. Most of the furniture, carpets and objects have been tailored specifically for Klaus K Hotel. The corridor’s carpets between the guest rooms tell the main creation story from the Kalevala, explaining how the world and the universe were created from seven eggs. This theme is highlighted in a white wood reception desk shaped like an egg and also depicting a bird’s nest with a massive ceiling light fixture; and the staircase leading to the bar and lounge has a large wall artwork based on the Genesis according to the Kalevala. A large mosaic features the pike, the symbol for music in the Kalevala, whose main character Väinämöinen made the first kantele instrument out of a pike’s jawbone. Outlined on each floor are animals depicted in the Kalevala’s adventures: song bird, magpie, swan, eagle, horse, moose, wolf and bee. The hotel’s cosy Italian restaurant, Toscanini, is also connected to the Kalevala. According to an essay written for Klaus K Hotel by Tuija Seipell, artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela joined a Finnish artistic colony in Florence in the spring of 1898, hanging out in bars and cafés, discussing fresco techniques and learning more about symbolism, then a new movement in the art world. He went on to paint Kalevala-themed ceiling frescoes for the central dome of the Finnish pavilion at the 1900 World Fair in Paris and in 1928 a similar one on the ceiling of the Finnish National Museum, still able to be viewed today. The hotel’s four original room categories are named after key Kalevala emotions – passion, mystical, desire and envy – and each room has a piece of art displaying a quote from the Kalevala describing its specific mood. Four years ago, Klaus K Hotel carried out a major expansion of its amenities, adding 30 new Sky Loft rooms and suites, where Finnish heritage is portrayed in a contemporary style. Throughout the year, the hotel hosts design and arts-related events including fashion shows, vernissages, art exhibitions, brand launches and corporate fundraisers.

WHITE WINE COQ AU VIN (4 people) I was recently contacted by a customer who asked if I could make something special for them, the traditional French dish coq au vin (cockerel in wine). I was happy to accommodate a special request, but a bit surprised when the customer told me that it was still alive and I would have to catch it first and do the whole gutting process before cooking it. They already had an older rooster in a fenced yard on their finca. Therefore, they were experiencing a lot of trouble with the six-month-old cockerel, who had become too dominant. Thank goodness for their neighbour, who is a butcher and happily managed all the rough preparation for us. My customer invited guests to enjoy the coq au vin, and celebrate peace once again in the henhouse. Since the menu was to be served for lunch, I chose to make it with white wine instead of authentic red wine, which may be less well known but definitely lives up to the traditional version. 1 whole cockerel or corn “campo” chicken 250 gr. mushrooms 250 gr. fresh shallots or raw pearl onions 150 gr. bacon cut into cubes

25 gr. butter 1 squeeze of Oleoestepa olive oil ½ bottle Alsace white wine ½ lit. chicken stock or soup 2 spoonful of maizena cornstarch 4 big cloves of garlic cut in half 4 fresh bay leaves handful of fresh parsley handful of fresh thyme leaves salt and 5-pepper mix

As an extra, you can make these delicious raw caramelised onions, which are our idea for a more modern coq au vin companion dish, in good company with your favourite potatoes.

Clean the cockerel and cut it into eight large pieces with all the skin, wings and thigh bones that will give it such a great taste. Season with salt, pepper, garlic and all the herbs, and let it rest for at least half an hour in the fridge. Fry the pieces in butter and oil for about six minutes on each side in a large iron saucepan until slightly golden. Add bacon, onion and mushrooms and fry for five more minutes before pouring in the white wine and reducing the liquid for approximately one minute. Add the chicken soup to the pan and simmer the whole dish for approximately three-quarters of an hour or until the young cock is tender. Stir the maizena cornstarch with a little cold water in a glass, which is then added (with slight stirring) to give a little more filling to the sauce before serving.

Peel the onions but keep a tiny bit of the bottom of the onions so they don’t break along the way. Melt the sugar lightly on a pan at medium heat and add the onions, salt and water. Let it cook under low heat until the onions are tender. If the caramel seems too sticky, add an extra spoonful of water. You can easily make a larger portion, as the caramelised onions are also a phenomenal accompaniment for blue cheese, pâté, terrines, meat and poultry dishes, both warm and direct from the fridge. Bon appetit…

Wine Notes ···

VEGANISM

in the Wine World By AJ Linn

If a vegan likes to drink wine, things get convoluted. Wine is not just grape juice that is pressed, fermented and left to mature, but a complicated base material that gives free reign to multiple chemical and physical reactions as it develops. Put simply, vegans are wary of wine as 90 per cent of it is clarified using animal products. One thing that needs emphasising from the very beginning is that all wine is naturally cloudy. Indeed, it is only relatively recently that we have come to expect wine to be a clear drink. The first Spanish wines that I imported into the UK several decades ago needed a back label explaining that any sediment was a natural by-product of the ageing process and in no way sinister or taste-negative. I realised much later that the same wines, particularly the sherries, could have been fined/clarified – ergo, subjected to a semi-natural filtration procedure in the barrel – by the addition of egg whites. Indeed, this practice, still in use, has the principal drawback of being quite expensive, but there are sherry houses that clarify their wines by this method, and the surplus egg yolks are traditionally sold, or more usually donated to, nunneries that specialise in making typical sweets and dessert dishes such as tocino de cielo (literally “fat from the sky”, as the mixture of egg yolks and sugar makes it a calorie bomb). Whichever way you look at it, all wine has to be filtered before bottling, and machine filtering is not completely effective. This is why 90 per cent of wines are not vegan. While fining agents are removed from the wine before it is bottled, the use of such agents as ox blood, still popular with some traditional winemakers, is something that most vegans would run a thousand miles from if they thought traces of it may linger in the bottle. And, since the laws on labelling in wine-producing countries give no incentive to mention what material is used in the fining process, the safest bet is to assume that all wine is non-vegan. Among some of the animal products that have always been used in the fining process, some are non-vegan, some non-vegetarian: blood and bone marrow; casein (milk protein); chitin: ( fibre from crustacean shells); egg albumen; fish

oil; gelatine (protein from boiling animal parts); isinglass (gelatine from fish bladder membranes). Most wines don’t usually show these “additives” on the label, so the general rule tends to be that any wine that doesn’t have a specific vegan marker on the bottle has been made using animal products. If you shop in a proper wine store rather than the supermarket, there is a likelihood the attendants can brief you on which wines vegans will have no problem with. Vegan wines use alternative filtration methods like bentonite clay, limestone, kaolin clay, plant casein and silica gel, and vegetable plaques instead of animal by-products, and it is easy to find a comprehensive list of vegan wine suppliers in your area. If you are determined to make your wine-drinking of a vegan nature, an easy way to start is by drinking kosher wines. Jewish dietary practice also prohibits additives of any sort of animal nature. Here are some useful guidelines… • Wines that are unfined and unfiltered are vegan. • Wines filtered only with sterile ceramic filters or cross-flow filters are vegan. • Many wines that are mass-produced use sterile filters instead of animal products. • People assume biodynamic wines are naturally vegan but, although such wines can qualify as vegan when they are unfined, the biodynamic vineyard uses animal bones ( for special compost mixtures). • The same applies to organic wines, which of course still have to be filtered, so unless they are advertised as such they are unlikely to be vegan. In fact the whole lack of transparency makes life difficult for the vegan wine drinker. Some producers use a vegan marking on their wine bottles. Use of the European Vegetarian Union’s V-Label certificate is already quite widespread, and the Vegan Society’s flower logo is also becoming common. There are some naturally vegan wines on the market, such as, for example, the well-known Protos red from Ribera del Duero. All are listed online and availability will depend on the area you are ordering from.

BODYHAPPY

in Six Weeks MY OWN PERSONAL EXPERIENCE BY DEBBY HEUS

I have been living in Spain for many years now and concluded that the Spanish lifestyle has not been the best for my figure. With the sun shining most of the time, there is also always a reason for a glass (or more) of wine. And, in my case, alcohol goes together with unhealthy eating... it was definitely time for a change. So I signed up for a personal body plan including a personal trainer, which I had never done before. I am meeting Helen in a bar in Aloha, order a cappuccino and think to myself: will she judge me for having the cookie? Helen looks extremely fit; she asks me all kinds of questions about my eating, drinking and exercise habits.

“How much water do you drink a day?” To which I reply in embarrassment, “Eeek... none and I haven’t done any exercise for years either.” Helen starts by telling me the basic principles of the plan… “Four months ago I packed-up my business in London, moved it to Marbella, and haven’t looked back. My Bodyhappy System focuses on one thing: getting you healthy. With this in place, fat loss is the easy part, eating nutrient-dense whole foods that support your hormones, liver, gut and overall health. I like to look at it this way... what can I add to your life rather than taking away? The training focuses on the most important thing: results and happiness on a day-to-day basis.” We

my measurements, discuss training schedules and set a goal for a four per cent loss of body fat. Since a normal programme takes around three months, and I only have six weeks, I really need to be strict. It will be three sessions of personal training a week, at my home or a local gym and, food-wise, a lot of green vegetables, protein and NO alcohol. It is going to be a real challenge, but I must do this... and I can. Can’t I? As Max Fitness is close to my home, I am doing classes at this beautiful gym overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. This surely makes exercising more pleasant. Helen teaches me how to use weights and different equipment, using a variety of techniques to improve the body’s structure, movement patterns, strength and power. Although I am not hungry, the first two weeks are hard because I need to lose my cravings for sugar, but once I had got over that, everything became a lot easier. I soon noticed that I could move better, I felt less bloated and could quickly see changes in my body. Helen is amazing, asking me daily about my diet and how I have been feeling after hard workouts. She is super supportive and gives me all kinds of tips, from how to prep my food to what exercises I can do by myself at home. During the weeks that follow I try to stick to the diet as well as I can. I have a busy schedule with work, events, friends coming over and dinner in restaurants, but it is all about making more healthy choices – and this I do. When the final day arrived, I was nervous about the results, unnecessarily however… I lost over three inches (eight centimetres) around my waist and the total loss of body fat was not four but five per cent! I was over the moon! Apart from the fat loss, what is more important is that I feel better, physically and mentally. I have more energy, my skin looks better and my body structure has improved. And this has another benefit in that pain I used to have in my lower back has been reduced considerably. It shows that exercising in combination with powerful nutrition really has been a life-changing experience for my body and mind. This feels great, I plan to continue, and now I know I can. I look forward to an even happier body. Helen offers the following services: Personal training – Online training with app – A health and lifestyle evaluation and action plan. If, like me, you are also ready to get into the best shape of your life, visit www.bodyhappy.es or WhatsApp Helen Turrell on +34 711 001 397. Special thanks to www.maxfitnessgym.es

The Life Coach

PHENOMENON The life coaching profession became popular in the 1980s for big corporations and businesses in the United States. On the other hand, motivational speakers, gurus and self-help books were more targeted at individuals. Even though it’s a multimilliondollar industry in America, in Europe it is still not that common on a personal level. A lot of people do not know the meaning of it and are convinced that it’s just a temporary trend. A major reason for the surge of life coaching is that our modern millennial society is no longer aligned with the traditional support system of family, church and community. Life coaching is not a therapy, and it doesn’t spend too much time on our past. It’s about what is happening now in our life and how to change it so we can achieve better results tomorrow. Are you one of those people who dreams of changing their job, buying a home or losing five kilos — and never makes the commitment? Or are you feeling stuck in the daily routine of juggling family, work and social life with no time for yourself? A life coach is like a personal trainer for your mind to help you change old patterns and beliefs in order to create new ones, and use powerful tools and techniques to produce fulfilling results in life and not give up halfway. No one signs up for an expensive gym membership or a personal trainer and expects to see results in a week or two. It is the same with life coaching: we don’t have a magic stick. The number of sessions and the results vary depending on the goals and a person’s ambitions and desire to change. Life coaching is not for everyone. If you stick to your old habits of Netflix, pizza and no exercise, an hour-long session per week with the best life coach will

not help you achieve that successful version of yourself any time soon. You have to be prepared to take that first step and commit to make another one, every day. Think of a toddler learning to walk. How many times do they fall and keep getting up over and over again? No one ever tells a toddler to give up and try again in a year. Once a client understands the way their mind works, they can achieve a significant positive change in all aspects of their life. Most of us need help, some answers in our lives such as why we over-eat or over-drink or have all of these dreams and ideas for the future and yet take no action. Our mind is the most powerful tool we are gifted with and yet most of the time we just let it drift into wanderlust. This is where the life coach steps in and guides you through your thoughts to find the answers. To clear the path of doubts and be there for you when you want to throw in the towel and give up. So, if you are willing to take your life to the next level and experience more positive thinking, smiles and goal-achieving moments, and become a better version of yourself… take the first step. Petya Barr is a life coach who lives and works for CYR Abogados in Marbella. She says being a consultant and helping others achieve their business goals for nearly 20 years made her realise that her biggest passion was working with individuals on a personal level to build a healthy relationship with themselves and success in all aspects of their lives. Did you know astronauts

faint on return to Earth? By Rachel Garrod

Fifty years ago this past July, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first people to walk on the moon. Although most of us are unlikely to ever take a trip into space, some of the findings related to the beneficial effects of exercise during space travel are translating into therapies for people here on Earth. There are well-known consequences of prolonged low-gravity environments such as loss of bone density and muscle mass which are detrimental to the astronaut’s health. But another less obvious problem is that of frequent fainting on return to Earth. For some people, here on terra firma, fainting can be an unpleasant feature of their normal life. This may occur after prolonged bed rest or with a condition known as Postural Orthostatic Hypotension. Fainting

occurs as a result of a brief fall in blood flow to the brain when the person stands or sits from a lying position. In a study recently published in the American Heart Association’s journal, Circulation, the effect of exercise carried out while on a six-month space trip was measured in 12 astronauts. On arrival back to Earth the astronauts were also given an intravenous saline infusion. The exercise regime was tough, up to two hours each day of resisted and aerobic exercise. However, the programme resulted in an impressive absence of fainting fits once the astronauts were back in our gravity. While we cannot be positive it was the exercise — no control group was pro-

vided, or maybe the saline infusion contributed — the study has led the way to exploring possible new treatments for people with postural hypotension. If you think you may suffer from postural hypotension please give me a call: assessment is simple and easy and could lead to better treatment options and outcomes. THEATRE PERFORMANCES IN MÁLAGA International Jazz Festival, Music Concerts and Ballet

A diverse Spanish and international cultural agenda resumes after summer at Málaga’s Teatro Cervantes and Teatro Echegaray, highlighted by the 33rd International Jazz Festival. To be held from 5 to 11 November at the Cervantes, the festival will pay tribute to the celebrated careers of saxophonist Charles Lloyd (performing with his quintet on 8 November) and pianist Kenny Barron (7 November), two legends of the genre’s golden age. It will also highlight three distinctive ways to explore jazz’s limits, with trumpeters Charles Tolliver (5 November) and Nils Petter Molvaer (10 November), and drummer Antonio Sánchez and Migration (9 November). Pro-Shade

Extensive Experience Installing Awnings on the Costa del Sol

Twelve years ago Pro-Shade was one of the first companies introducing shade sails onto the Spanish market. Today Pro-Shade is a standardbearer on the Costa del Sol when it comes to shade solutions such as luxury awnings, pergolas and parasols. For hospitality clients, they have a design department that can custom-design awnings and parasols to shade bigger areas. Extremely popular at the moment are bioclimatic pergolas, thanks to their adjustable motorised panels, which guarantee absolute protection from the elements, regulating the sun’s intensity and providing natural

ventilation. There is also the option of closing the perimeter sides with vertical blinds or sliding glass curtains. Bioclimatic pergolas are the ideal solution for experiencing and protecting outdoor spaces. The movement system of the panels that make up the roof is the key technical feature of these structures. Pro-Shade is based in Marbella but has completed projects all over southern Spain, from Cádiz to Nerja. Tel. +34 644 892 533 (J. van Os) www.pro-shade.eu

Residencias Lujosas Vitalux

Introducing Doris Kavcic’s Healthy Vita-Hideout There is a highly specific feeling with a “first time”, whether it’s a first journey or a first day at a new job. It’s a combination of exhilaration and fear, notes Doris Kavcic. The Healthy VitaHideout is infused with the flavour of Doris’ first “outing”. She founded Vitalux Real Estate (Residencias Lujosas Vitalux, S.L.) in 2009 “with a lot of passion”, and it has become her lifetime achievement. Doris believes that getting what you want from your job and your life takes mental toughness which is why she began studying to become a “mental coach”. She primarily did this for her own development but also to lead the company in the best possible way. “Purchasing a property has so much to do with emotions and there was,

since the beginning, this one key reason why the company was called ‘Vitalux’, including the word ‘Vitality’, which has so much power in all ways.” Ten years later, in 2019, the Healthy VitaHideout has been born. Doris adds, “The posts are just a beginning of what I hope will be a thrilling ongoing motivation about mind set, life coaching and balance for some of you.” She loves to mix the unusual, seeking homes for people who entrust this search to Vitalux and offering the passion to motivate others with her own life experience. “I am – as we all are – a work in progress. Life is best lived in forward motion, not in reverse!“ Residencias Lujosas Vitalux S.L. Doris Kavcic / info@vitalux.es

Art Marbella

Showcase of Contemporary International Trends More than 2,000 guests, including art collectors from around the world, celebrated the launch of the fifth edition of Art Marbella with an exclusive VIP Program party at Anantara Villa Padierna Palace in July. The show then continued until 3 August at Marbella’s conference centre, hosting more than 40 international galleries, including from Paris, Berlin, Madrid, New York, Barcelona and Miami. This year’s fair offered a new concept in which, according to the organisers, “special projects were the protagonists and the gallery spaces were re-thought to avoid the inherit coldness of a classic stand, with the purpose that works of art could be exhibited in a similar space to the one they will find in the habitats of their future collectors”. One of the local exhibitors was Nouvelle Vague Marbella, whose “Digital Love” booth exhibited the work of Iranian artist Shadi Rezaei, Samer Fouad (an Egyptian based in New York) and Firouz FarmanFarmaian (NVM co-owner and contemporary artist). NVM is described as “a creative lab, an experimental and ever-changing art space with a radical chic program open to artistic expression and exchange”. The gallery represents upcoming artists from all over the world, with a particular attention to new voices from northern Africa and the Middle East.” On 7 September, the gallery will present “Operations” by French underground artist Frédéric Atlan. www.nouvellevaguemarbella.com

MODIFICATION OF THE MISNAMED

“Tax on Mortgages” in Spain Article supplied by Welex Lawyers & Accountants

Royal Decree-Law 17/2018 of 8 November amends the Spanish tax duty on legal acts, in what the press has come to call the “tax on mortgages” in Spain. After the decision by the Spanish Supreme Court that the payment of the tax derived from the granting of a mortgage loan should continue to be paid by the borrower, the Spanish government approved — by means of this Royal Decree Law, which modifies the revised text of the Law on Transfer Tax and Stamp Duties (approved by Royal Legislative Decree 1/1993 of September 24) — the regulation by which (effective 10 November 2018) this tax must be assumed by the lenders (that is, the banks). Thus, this Royal Decree Law modifies article 29 of the Law on Transfer Tax and Stamp Duties, which is drafted as follows: “The acquirer of the property or right shall be a passive subject and, in his/ her absence, the persons who initiate or request the notarial documents, or those in whose interest they are issued. In the case of Loan Title Deeds with mortgage guarantee in Spain, the lender will be considered the taxpayer.” These stamp duties charge legal actions that are granted by notarial, mercantile and administrative documents, giving a value to the legal act in question and on which the tax is applied. The tax rate varies depending on the autonomous community (region) where the public document is granted, hovering between 0.5% and 2.0%. In Andalucía, the tax rate on mortgage loans granted by banks is 1.5%, to be applied to what is known as “mortgage responsibility”. But what is Spanish mortgage responsibility? So as not to burden the reader with technical questions, and for practical purposes, we will say that this

does not coincide with the amount of the mortgage loan requested, but with a higher amount. The reader may ask, “Why higher?” Well, let’s continue. As we noted, this “mortgage responsibility” in Spain is calculated by adding, to the principal of the loan that they granted us, certain amounts that would originate in the event that the bank had to execute the mortgage loan for non-payment of the instalments: a maximum amount for ordinary interests, plus a maximum amount of delayed interests and another for judicial and/or extrajudicial costs. Mortgage responsibility is not always fixed, and it varies from one banking institution to another. Normally, it ranges between 30% and 60% of the principal of the loan that is granted to us. For example, let’s say we apply for a mortgage loan with a principal of €150,000. Assuming that the maximum amount for ordinary and extraordinary interests and costs is €50,000, the total mortgage liability would be €200,000. Applying 1.5% of the stamp duties of the autonomous community of Andalucía, the amount to be paid would be €3,000, which, effective November 2018, is assumed by the bank and not the borrower.
